A Summary: The Spirealm | 致命游戏 (Kaleidoscope of Death 死亡万花筒 Live Action) & Why You Should (Eventually) Watch It

Talk about the most short-lived drama release ever, not even totalling two hours if I recall. Creating this summary as I've seen a handful of confused friends, so here it goes!

It's going to be a long review because I sped through all 78 episodes and only properly watched the first two doors, but I got you. You'll get both the brief book rundown and the drama parts!

If you just wanna see the bromance (LOVE) parts please skip to section 4!!!!

1. Overview

Title: The Spirealm (kinda awful I'm sorry it's a mouthful) or 致命游戏 which means fatal game

Adapted From: Danmei (BL) Kaleidoscope of Death by Xi Zixu

Novel Prints: There are GORGEOUS Thai, Vietnamese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese versions printed, AND Singapore publisher Rosmei has signed the license for the ENGLISH version, probably going on sale this year (preview is here). You can still access fan translations by Taida on I think wordpress and someone else on Tumblr sorry bad memory (they did half and half each) if you'd like to read it for context. It is one of my FAVE danmeis EVER and I am a die-hard OG book fan, check out my full danmei review here.

Total Episodes: 78 (20 minutes each with the exception of last episode which 10 minutes, with several BTS not that I think we will get to see all of them yet)

Where to Watch (LOL): Erm considering that iQIYI China AND International took the episodes down, there is no legal way to watch this, BUT thanks to some cnetz with super fast and great wifi, we managed to get ripped HD versions without subs. iQIYI is very hard on copyright though, they've taken down several subbed and unsubbed versions already on YouTube, but you should type the titles of show into Twitter and the top tags will tell you where to access the raws and very little subbed episodes, that may also be taken down at any point. I have the Chinese raws but as it's hosted on a cloud, I had to pay to access it.

Main Characters: Lin Qiushi & Ruan Nanzhu/Ruan Baijie (in the novel) and Ling Jiushi & Ruan Nanzhu/Ruan Baijie (in the drama)

Produced By: iQIYI so for SURE they won't film it fully BL even if the original is, but I've seen enough bromance cuts

Main Actors: Xia Zhiguang (Ruan Nanzhu/Ruan Baijie) + Huang Junjie (Ling Jiushi)

2. Summary

Book (drama follows closely if not removing the supernatural premises): Lin Qiushi, a designer, opens the door to his home one day from inside and sees 12 iron doors outside. Confused, he opens one of them and arrives at a snow covered village in the mid of winter, and meets Ruan Baijie, who's a pretty, unusually tall and whiny/timid woman. They realise that they're in a horrifying door game, and they'll have to find a door and a key to get out, while battling a long-haired, human-eating deity. They, along with a few others, have to survive day after day until they get out, and on the first night, two people have died in gory ways. Ruan Baijie and Lin Qiushi partner each other, and despite seemingly timid and crying all the time, she saves Lin Qiushi a few times mysteriously, and Lin Qiushi finds himself trusting in Ruan Baijie.

They get through the door together and when they leave successfully, Lin Qiushi realizes that the people who died in the door will die in real life by some freak accident too - car accidents, forced suicides, a robbery gone wrong, a lift trapped in the air and going ablaze, and more. That night, Lin Qiushi wakes up to see a super handsome and tall Ruan Nanzhu at his bedside and this man feels familiar to him, but he can't put a finger on it. All he can think of when Ruan Nanzhu says his name is Ruan Baijie (ahem he would later find out who it is of course). Ruan Nanzhu takes him to his mansion in the suburbs where he meets a group of other people just like them, who're forced to go through the doors for survival. Ruan Nanzhu then invites him to join Obsidian, his organization.

Through various doors, Lin Qiushi grows and supports a super intelligent and powerful Ruan Nanzhu, falls in love with him, gets through many many scary doors with him and some of their other team members, makes friends, loses them to the cruelty of the doors as they ponder over what the door means, and what being alive/dying means.

And at the end of it, at the end of of it all, when they're all good and living their life, Lin Qiushi also finds out what Ruan Nanzhu's secret is, and the lengths to which Ruan Nanzhu went to, just to be with him.

Drama: Ling Jiushi is a VR game designer who gets pulled into a game, and he meets Ruan Baijie (in his male form) right off the bat (SO NOT CROSSDRESSING I AM SAD). All the parts are actually the same as the novel, albeit with the game setting and Ling Jiushi and Ruan Nanzhu's identity adjustments to suit the game premise. Most of the other doors and their lines are the same, just that the ending is a bit more confusing than it could be. There's a big bad as well and they actually show the opposing organizations when in the novel, these other organizations aside from Obsidian didn't even actually have a face or goal to them.

Ruan Nanzhu/Ruan Baijie: MY HANDSOME CROSSDRESSING INTELLIGENT ALOOF BUT WHINY (WHEN IT COMES TO LIN QIUSHI) SASSY BOSS!!!! He's super mysterious and super thick-skinned too, and all he wants is Lin Qiushi's attention the moment he meets him. He's intrigued by Lin Qiushi's calm and his brains and the way he handles things, and has a lot of trust for him right from the get-go. This is also shown in the drama itself. As the leader of Obsidian, he cares a lot for his team members and his friends even if he doesn't show it most of the time, and the last thing he wants to do is lose Lin Qiushi, and he would do ANYTHING for Lin Qiushi, ANYTHING!!! Just look at him whining:

Ling Jiushi (Lin Qiushi): In the novel he's super calm, has quite a lot of brains, a little bit of a blur in the beginning but he's super smart as well. Worries a lot for Ruan Nanzhu and is also a loyal friend to some of his only friends, and feels a lot when he loses them. Falls gradually in love with Ruan Nanzhu in the novel, like they just belong together. In this drama, Ling Jiushi holds that same trust for Ruan Nanzhu, but in demeanour he seems a bit more like a klutz and and not as cool as he was in the novel, but I guess it's acceptable. Literally like the only thing he loves more than RNZ (maybe) is his cat Chestnut LOL and RNZ is NOT really happy about that but Chestnut LOVES RNZ

Yixie and Qianli: CUTEST TWINS ;-; WHO TREAT RNZ and LQS as their big brothers LOOK AT THEM BOWING AND RNZ/LJS like parents LMAO

4. ALL FAVE BROMANCE MOMENTS + TROPES

AND DID I MENTION HE FEEDS HIM IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE

AND THAT THEY DATED UNDER THE FIREWORKS LIKE THE NOVEL DOES NOT EVEN HAVE THIS SHIT

AND THE KABEDONS

AND FINALLY RUAN NANZHU RIZZ OMG

5. Settings

They REALLY OUTDID THEMSELVES. THIS JUST FROM DOORS 1-6:

THEY LOOK EXACTLY LIKE THE NOVEL DESCRIBED!!!!

6. Overall Thoughts

PROS: This was NOT a cheap production, I'm telling you, they followed the cases very well and there're a lot of super recognisable lines, if not ALL of them, even if they changed the cases a little. I think they did it because in the novel originally, the author DOES leave a lot of details hanging like someone dies and you know he had a background and there are some shady things happening but the author NEVER actually goes into detail. So the drama did their best to cover these loopholes, even if it felt a little awkward at times. Money went into settings and attires and every damn thing, this looks EXPENSIVE. And if you've ever imagined each door and the bosses inside in your head, you might have felt chills go down your spine because damn did they really colour the book's settings for me (despite its differences). DID I MENTION that Xia Zhiguang really got the damn memo and he was a passable Ruan Nanzhu/Ruan Baijie who knew how to turn on his BL eyes. PLUS they really did some of the character deaths really well - they're technically some of the biggest parts of this story so ;-; (not two main of course)

CONS (maybe): They did away with the supernatural/horror premise and replaced it with a GAME premise, which means that there's a scientific element to it and the try to explain away stuff with the game, including the ending. I don't 100% get the ending, but the feel/vibe is about the same. Might not be for hardcore reader fans tho! They skipped out on a couple of doors, some of which were my faves, but it's fine, it's long enough LOL. They give away/explain some of the clues and surprises super early which means you don't get that added boom at the back as well. Despite that, I have to say they tried to round up the loopholes from the book as much as they could and give it an explanation while tying elements/conspiracies across doors (probably also to save cast fees LOL). And as always it's not a solid ending, it's an open confusing one, and even more confusing than the book itself because THERE IS NO CERTAIN HAPPILY EVER AFTER WITH HUBBY for it (there is in the book tho, they live together happily every after). Secondl,y, I'd say HJJ's acting is a bit stiff and OOC compared to the novel, but Xia Zhiguang really made up for it.

Favorite head cannon for each ship, or at least a few of them? I recall pretty much everyone could be with pretty much everyone, so I'd love to hear abt them

Ooh boy let’s do this!

Red and Vio are twins! So they are very obviously not on this list as a ship.

GREEN/VIO: I love the ship trope of “chubby and short” x “thin and lanky” and this is them. If they cuddle Vio is infinitely more comfortable than Green is because Green is basically holding a skeleton, but he’s ok with that because it’s a cute skeleton

GREEN/RED: These two are the type of couple where one of them is cooking and the other one sneaks up behind them and gives them a surprise kiss and they both get covered in flour

GREEN/BLUE: “are they dating or are try trying to kill each other” why not both? They’re definitely more mild than in the manga, but when they start to argue over something it’s probably going to be a coin flip of whether they’ll start wrestling like there’s no tomorrow or if they’ll make out. Usually it’s the former option and Blue usually wins.

GREEN/SHADOW: the way they get together is Shadow randomly grabs Green’s hand one day, kisses it, says “we’re dating now,” and Green has to take a minute to realize what just happened. He’s fine with what happened, he’s just also utterly baffled.

BLUE/VIO: Brains and brawn duo. They’re sitting on the couch watching some sappy romance movie and Vio steals some of Blue’s popcorn. Blue curses him out. Vio threatens to kill his entire family in retaliation. Blue says “do it, you won’t.” They’re in love.

BLUE/RED: golden retriever x angry chihuahua on steroids

BLUE/SHADOW: these two know everything about each other, they’ve been friends since elementary school. They know each other’s secrets, traumas, and weak points, and they also know what the other absolutely loves. They’re 16 and getting ready to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary.

RED/SHADOW: Red gets told he has scary dog privileges with dating Shadow. Shadow proceeds to correct whoever said that, clarifying that Red is the scary dog. They go on cute little dates all the time, like to the park or mall or to get ice cream. They share a milkshake that they drink with heart shaped straws.

VIO/SHADOW: They’d be the most sappy, lovey-dovey duo in their school, sickly sweet and everything, so clearly in love, as adorable as they can be when they’re both a little scary, and they’d unanimously get voted “best bromance” for the yearbook. Historians say they were quite good chums. Pals. Buddies.

The sound of the curtain being shoved aside wouldn’t be so offensive on a typical morning. It wasn’t a particularly loud or harsh sound, but then again, this wasn’t a typical morning. Tobias groaned audibly as he rolled to the side, forgetting he had slept on the sofa. He was quickly reminded as he crashed to the floor, a trail of curses falling from his lips.

“What the hell are you doing, Ramsey?”

“Joining the land of the living... it’s nearly noon.”

“What does it matter? It’s our day off.” Tobias shaded his eyes. “Would you close that damn thing!”

Ethan reluctantly pulled the curtains back with an exasperated sigh. “I didn’t realize you were such a lightweight, Carrick!”

“Lightweight?” Tobias protested. “A, I had a lot more to drink than you. B, I didn’t come home and crash... no, I crashed directly into the lovely Linda... or was it Laura? Lydia!! Lydia... I think... where did she go, anyway?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Ethan rolled his eyes. “I guess you don’t recall how mortified Lisa was when I walked in on the two of you... crashing... on the couch.”

Tobias rolled on his back, staring at the ceiling thoughtfully. “Oh, yeah...” he droned as realization washed over him. “I vaguely remember her grabbing her things and rushing out.”

Ethan chuckled as his eyes fell on a red lace thong draped over the corner of an armchair. Lifting it gently between his thumb and forefinger, he threw them in Tobias’s direction.

“Not all of her things. It looks like she left a souvenir behind.”

Tobias shifted to sit up, a proud grin morphing on his lips. “Souvenirs... not a bad idea...we have four years of adventures ahead... maybe we should start a memory box for all our...encounters.”

“Yeah, I’m going to pass,” Ethan laughed as he fell into the armchair. “Wait...” he stiffened, “is it safe to sit here?”

“Oh, yeah. If memory serves, we never made it over there.”

“That’s a relief! As I was saying, I think I’ll exercise a little more... discretion in my extracurricular activities.”

“Discretion is overrated. And not for nothin’, Ramsey, but you’ll have to have extracurricular activities before worrying about how you’ll handle them.”

His roommate’s smug expression raised ire and put him on the defensive. “Perhaps I’m just discrete enough that you’re unaware of them.”

“Nah,” Tobias chuckled. “I notice everything. For example, I’ve noticed how you’ve been eyeing Vincenza in Dr. Phelp’s class.”

“I have not!”

“You haven’t?” Tobias raised a brow. “Shit! If you’re not interested in Chenza, that means she’s fair game... you don’t mind if I...”

“Cut the shit, Carrick!”

And there was the smug expression again. “I knew it. So... what’s your plan?”

Ethan sat silently for several moments before surrendering. “I’m meeting her for brunch; it’s a study thing.”

“Right,” Tobias leered, “That’s what they call it... studying.”

“It is!” Ethan laughed, stepping up to grab his jacket. “And I have to get going, or I’m going to be late.”

“Wouldn’t want that,” Tobias smiled, rolling back to his side.

“Are you going to get up?” Ethan asked.

“Sure, in another two or three hours. I should be fully recovered by then.”

Ethan shook his head with a laugh as he walked out the door. It was going to be an interesting four years.

May I ask you…Is Ruinstorm a fun novel? …I read Angels of Caliban, better said I tried to read Angels of Caliban and….I need some recommendations…please

Ruinstorm is dramatic - it could make a good film with the right visual effects. And we first start to see the Sanguinor become a part of the lore, and Sanguinius really starts to suffer from visions, more so than before. And of course Konrad being the delightful agent of chaos he is. But fun? More angsty if I recall. The main legions/Primarchs confront temptations, more daemons, and outsized Warp insanity. It’s an important part of the storyline for the legions and Primarchs involved but I wouldn’t use the word “fun”.

Have you read the books about Imperium Secundus that come before it & Angels of Caliban?

Because The Unremembered Empire and Pharos are two of my favorite books in the whole series. Those are necessary to understand what’s going on in Angels of Caliban & Ruinstorm. They feature Guilliman/Lion/Sanguinius versus Konrad Curze being Konrad Curze. And two lovely Astartes characters, Alexis Pollux and Barabas Dantioch, their bromance (or more, according to many fans) is really worth reading.

And they’re both fun as hell because the Primarch banter is 🔥🔥

Also, as someone who is a fan of Azkaellon, you will definitely want to read Pharos.

One other thing - I’ve mostly listened to the series on audio books because for years I had a job that required me to commute 4+ hours a day. And the way narrator Jonathan Keeble voices Sanguinius is just absolute perfection.

Tifa's Theme: A Musical Deep Dive (Part IV)

Parts I-III here.

Section (D) Tifa’s Leitmotif Across the Original FFVII

(D) (I) The Leitmotif as Setup and Foreshadowing

Tifa’s leitmotif is heard just twice in the original game. The first time – in Tifa’s Theme – it loops over four crucial back-to-back story events:

Cloud and Tifa’s (first shown) reunion in Seventh Heaven;

Cloud and Barret’s argument in Seventh Heaven’s basement;

Cloud and Tifa’s recollection of their promise; and

Cloud agreeing to join Avalanche on the next bombing run.

Tifa’s Theme begins before Tifa welcomes Cloud “home”; before Marlene mistakes his arrival for her “Papa’s;” before anything at all is said about her. The music is the game’s first statement about Tifa.

As well as introducing the character and what she represents, Tifa’s Theme communicates the subtexts of the Cloud and Tifa’s bond:

The ‘reunion’ foreshadows their reunion in the Lifestream where their arcs climax;

The argument (with Barret) establishes Cloud as having no ties to any person, affiliation or cause but Tifa;

Cloud’s promise to protect Tifa is the memory tying their past together;

And Cloud joins Avalanche to keep their promise.

The second time the leitmotif is heard is in the track, The Planet’s Crisis: the conclusion of Cloud and Tifa’s arcs. Before that, however, there is a melody directly connected to the leitmotif, and that is in the high flute segment of Words Drowned by Fireworks.

(Which I will call WDBF for short.)

(D) (II) The Leitmotif as Echo and Resolution

For decades now, players have debated which Gold Saucer outing is ‘the most’ canon. That they occur as substitutes for one another means they are all canon (and hoo boy, would that bromance with Barret be a glorious addition to Rebirth.) But the accompanying music track on these outings pertains to one duo very specifically. And that is in its subtle relationship to Tifa’s leitmotif melody. I am not talking about the instrumentation here – the flute not being solely unique to Tifa (it is used heavily, for instance, in Aerith and Nanaki’s leitmotifs). Nor am I referring to the track’s title – which is a homage specifically to Cloud and Tifa’s date (her words are the only words to be drowned by fireworks). No, there is a treasure here which undoubtedly gives the track away as belonging to Cloud and Tifa. And that is the pitch-for-pitch nine-note bridge to each melody’s climax (WDBF and Tifa’s Theme).

If we were to transpose one melody into the key of the other, this segment would be identical in pitch. In Tifa’s Theme this bridge is the ending of Subphrase 3. In WDBF, this bridge is the ending of the flute-role.

The effect of this subtle echo is huge. Recall from our last post that Subphrase 3 of Tifa’s leitmotif culminates on a held A – the note she had been trying to rise to again and again since its beginning…

…And ending on that initial rising point, we were taken into the climax (Subphrase 4) which ultimately ended a tone below that A (our G meaning Tifa just missed the mark).

Now, with the pitch-for-pitch echo of that bridge signaling the climax-point of WDBF, we have Tifa literally, openly, trying to express her yearning love for Cloud. This note-step echo, so to speak, presents her direct, now unmistakable attempt. For while Tifa’s Theme culminates in a final struggle where Tifa locks her feelings away, WDBF bridges into the game’s main leitmotif – which is specifically, in its minor-keyed, ‘unstable’ rendition, the heart of the ‘finding-Cloud’ conflict.

WDBF does not only play at Gold Saucer. We hear it for a second time in the Temple of the Ancients when Cait Sith ‘predicts Cloud and Aerith’s future.’ Of course, by Disc 1’s end, this is revealed to be the narrative’s ruse – this conversation (metaphorically) being the drowning-out firework as Cait Sith says, “Poor Tifa.” The third and final time we encounter the track is when Tifa finds the comatose Cloud in Mideel, ending where she learns that he has mako poisoning and circumstances again keep him from her reach. This is her last ‘drowned’ expression of feelings – their next reunion (occurring with the main leitmotif in Who Am I?) being the real deal, where Tifa and Cloud together piece back their memories, recover Cloud, and Tifa learns of Cloud’s life-long devotion to her.

It has often been overlooked that Tifa has, at the point of Who Am I?’s first occurrence, lost her own semblance of self. I have rarely seen the subject of her own memories broached in discussion, which are, it must be emphasized, just as in need of resolution as Cloud’s. Noted in the video above, Who Am I? also applies directly to Tifa – its first occurrence being during her time in Scarlet’s gas chamber. In fact, Tifa is the one through whom the track is introduced. Cloud, the anchor of her past and present, has been stripped away. Tifa doesn’t know what is real anymore, wondering whether her memories are “made up” (as she confesses later in the Lifestream). The life and home she’d rebuilt in Midgar is destroyed. And she is in a state of despair, having failed to keep Cloud safe. Tifa, simultaneous to losing Cloud, has lost herself, allegorized by her being strapped to a chair, alone in darkness, left to die under the fogged and suffocating fumes of the gas.

Moreover, this occurrence of Who Am I? bridges the two times that our brave and persevering heroine breaks down. The first, when Cloud hands over the Black Materia, where she is ready to die as North Crater crumbles. The second, on the Highwind, even after having fought for her life and escaping Scarlet’s chamber. Here, the party confronts her about Cloud and encourages her to push forward:

Nanaki: Do you think we aren’t strong enough without Cloud? Do you think we can’t save the Planet alone? Tifa: Meteor is coming, and Weapon is on the rampage… At a time like this, I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. No idea at all… Barret: Get a hold of yourself, Tifa! C’mon, let’s think about this! No way we can get offa this train we’re on! Tifa: If only Cloud was here, everything would be fine. Cloud would… stand that cocky little way he did, and tell us what to do. He’d say, ‘Everything’s under control, Tifa.’ Barret: Tifa! When’d you become such a wimp! Tifa: I’m sorry, Barret. I’m so depressed, I’m surprised at myself. Nanaki: And Tifa… the reason why we all thought it was Cloud was because… Tifa: I know. That’s why I want to make sure. That’s why I have to see him again.

Before turning to the game’s grand climax, The Planet’s Crisis, let us look at some instrumentation. The intro melody of Tifa’s Theme is played on a solo oboe, and harmonized by an electric piano and clarinet. This is interesting because, as we saw in the leitmotif and its echo in WDBF, Tifa’s voice is represented by the solo flute. Remember from Part III of our deep dive that the intro of Tifa’s Theme presented two collocating viewpoints (ours/Cloud’s, and Tifa’s) and that its ending tension (the dominant chord) took us for the first time directly into Tifa’s own viewpoint. We see the same thing happening with the instrumentation: the oboe – the flute’s neighbor relative instrument – playing the intro; and the flute then picking up her leitmotif. Flutes and oboes serve different kinds of roles all over FFVII. But in the context of Tifa’s Theme, two perspectives can be taken on the oboe:

The first, as representing both Tifa’s view and the views of everyone else for whom Tifa is ‘home.’ (The oboe presents Tifa’s view but it is clouded by her secrets, whereas the flute lifts us up into her true desires.) Because her secrets are only foreshadowed and locked away in this intro, we see the Tifa that Cloud and the party sees – we see her as home, distracted from her sufferings. Thus the two views collocate: Tifa’s and the party’s/player’s/Cloud’s.

The second, as foreshadowing Tifa and Cloud coming together – the oboe playing the climax (the game’s main leitmotif) which follows the flute (Tifa’s leitmotif echo) in WDBF, and the oboe later being Tifa’s voice (for Tifa’s full leitmotif) overlapping Cloud’s on the English horn in The Planet’s Crisis. (We’ll get to this shortly.)

While WDBF’s flute segment echoes Tifa’s Theme and climaxes with the heart and resolution of Tifa’s conflict – finding Cloud – it very, very closely resembles the instrumentation of the track Lifestream, as we’ll see in the video below. In terms of Tifa’s character arc, therefore, WDBF can be called the track that bridges Tifa’s Theme (her arc’s conflict) with the Lifestream itself (the physical setting of her arc’s resolution).

Finally, we have reached The Planet’s Crisis. Aside from WDBF’s little echo, Tifa’s leitmotif is hidden from the time of her introduction until the grand climax of the game. Why is this, from a musical-narrative standpoint? My conclusion is: to be the conveyance (together with FFVII’s main leitmotif) of the conclusion of Cloud and Tifa’s arcs. Here, at long, long last, the two leitmotifs overlap.

(D) (III) The Leitmotif as Conclusion

Cloud set off to join Soldier to gain the strength to protect Tifa, and his promise to be her hero continually drives his arc. It is during the Planet’s crisis that Cloud – free of Soldier and Sephiroth, as just Cloud – has finally carried this out. (Bear in mind the distinction between resolution and conclusion. Tifa’s arc resolved in the Lifestream with the saving of Cloud and her own sense of self. Cloud’s arc was there also resolved, with his regaining his psyche, his feelings being bared to Tifa, and his accepting of himself. The Planet’s crisis, following their night under Highwind, is the final carrying forward of that resolution. That is to say, it is the tying up of all ends – the conclusion. Cloud who has accepted himself – his ‘weak,’ ‘failure’ self who truly was Tifa’s hero and had her heart all along – is able to, just as himself, save her.

Let us consider this narrative now together with the music.

Firstly, a note on the key. When we began our deep dive, we began with a quote by Austrian composer Ernst Pauer, who summarized F major as:

“…at once full of peace and joy, but also express[ing] effectively a light, passing regret – a mournful, but not a deeply sorrowful feeling.”

D major, the key encompassing our segment of The Planet’s Crisis, Pauer summarizes as:

“…express[ing] majesty, grandeur, pomp, and adapt[ing] itself well to triumphal processions, festival marches, and pieces in which stateliness is the prevailing feature.”

D major is popularly used in marches, carols and holiday songs. Where Tifa’s Theme carries home along with underlying suffering, its leitmotif with the main in The Planet’s Crisis carries victory.

When Cloud has caught Tifa in the crumbling crater, we hear Tifa’s leitmotif on the oboe, solo over arco strings. Below is a screen from the orchestral partition, courtesy of Kevin Courcelle here (all thanks and credit to this amazing musician and arranger whom I highly recommend looking up).

This first subphrase plays over the pair holding each other and discussing reuniting with Aerith.

As the second subphrase ends, we have the overlap of the four-note ending of Sephiroth’s leitmotif, on the English horn (cor anglais) and trombone. This ending represents the vanquishment of Sephiroth’s influence in Tifa’s life; Cloud has at last defeated him once and for all. (Well, until Advent Children, but for our present original story…) This is conveyed in the merging of Sephiroth’s leitmotif into the main (through the same instrumentation), representing victorious hero-Cloud. The triumphant melody overlaps with the third and fourth subphrases of Tifa’s – Tifa’s cry from WDBF being fulfilled: Cloud is found and she is safe in his arms. It is now that Cloud lifts Tifa safely onto the rock.

In contrast to the unstable, minor synth and strings of Who Am I?, the main leitmotif – Cloud’s voice in major – is now on sure ground. And in an almost cheeky playfulness, it starts its first subphrase, stops halfway, and then restarts a tone higher with a series of accidentals; more triumphant, more glorious, more free (image below). (Accidentals are chromatic notes foreign to the key, giving off tension against and breaking through the key’s constraints.) It is as if Cloud, stepping into hero status, begins as ‘Soldier Cloud’ would – following the pattern of his once-idol Sephiroth – only to immediately stop and go, “Hey, wait, he’s gone. It’s finished, he’s gone!” He backtracks and starts again, realizing himself different from that hero he’d dreamed of being in Sephiroth’s shadow; a hero in his own wholly free of any and all his influence.

This restart of the main leitmotif kicks off on a low E note, synchronizing with the ending high E note of Tifa’s. It is a merging of the two character voices – an effectual becoming of one. It is then that the main leitmotif takes the forefront, Tifa’s effectively being drawn up into it, as the pair turn to meet the rest of their friends.

What is also interesting is the instrument combination. I mentioned earlier that the oboe is a relative neighbor of the flute. The English horn (cor anglais) is not actually a ‘horn’ – in terms of being a brass instrument (like, for instance, the French horn). The cor anglais is in fact a double-reed woodwind instrument of the oboe family. It is played in the same manner as the oboe, but differs in that it is bigger (giving it a lower pitch range), and has a rounder bottom (giving it a more reverberation). It is these two very related instruments that sync on that grand E note, in which Tifa’s voice is drawn up into Cloud’s. Meanwhile the trombone is the perfect voice for Cloud’s triumph as Tifa’s hero – no class more fitting than the brass to grandly express victory.

Cloud and Tifa are not the first Final Fantasy couple to have their leitmotifs overlap together. Final Fantasy VI’s ending track, Balance is Restored, introduces Celes’ leitmotif on an oboe. Then, transitioning into strings, Locke’s leitmotif simultaneously enters on… guess what? The English horn. Of course, there are many differences between Cloud & Tifa’s and Locke & Celes’ music synchrony, but I just love that little parallel.

To wrap up in summary the use of Tifa’s music in the original game (ie. Posts I-IV):

The intro of Tifa’s Theme (Post I) established Tifa as embodying home. In juxtaposing viewpoint – Tifa’s own viewpoint – were her locked-away burdens. Here we examined how the music sets up that Tifa: holds a profound motherliness toward others which outweighs thought for herself; strives to keep herself distracted from the insecurities of having to deal with her emotions; and embodies home for everyone else despite her own life being plagued by suffering.

Climaxing on the dominant chord (Post II), her conflictions were forefronted, and we were taken from the viewpoint of those to whom Tifa is home, into Tifa’s secret world of suffering. Here we saw the conveyances of Tifa being burdened by her: longings to confront Cloud with the truth; uncertainties of what the truth is; fears of losing Cloud should she take action; and doubts toward the validities of her own memories.

The leitmotif (Post III) revealed to us her drive, rock, reason, hope and the heart of her conflictions – Cloud – through its expression as: a theme of love; a clash against the always-home harmony; and a theme of perseverance.

Now that we have considered (to our efforts) the full picture, there is one final thing to point out. And that is the foreshadowing of arc closure in Tifa’s Theme itself – how Tifa’s character and journey, right down to the music, finds completion in her oneness with Cloud.

What I mean is that Tifa’s own theme track is, on its own, incomplete. Remember our observation in Post III that the leitmotif ends on and eternally loops from the dominant chord (our tension highpoint)?

And that the final note is a held G – a tone below the A the melody was trying to reach the whole time?

Tifa’s Theme ends in the highpoint of her conflictions which, despite consistent perseverance, could not be overcome through her strength alone. This ending note – a fall-short with Tifa’s greatest efforts – at last finds resolution in The Planet’s Crisis with the synchronizing support of Cloud’s victorious lift.

Tifa’s leitmotif seeks resolution, lest it loops and loops and loops, until The Planet’s Crisis at last sees it taken up into the main. It is an ending, and it is a new beginning, of a new life together. A life where, as is vice versa, Tifa finds completion in Cloud.

That brings us to the end of the original game. But we have one more post left, where we’ll observe Tifa’s leitmotif throughout the FFVII compilation. Seeing Rebirth is just months away, I will likely post it after its release. In the meantime, thanks for journeying with me here. Don't you think it's funny cause actual canon gay characters in BL manga will say "I love you" but only the shounen bromance can spew out some of the most romantic shit akin to a 19th century poet writing a letter expressing his surpressed love for his lover 😭.....

This phenomenon fascinated me so much Anon that I actually looked into it and have since begun studying queer relationships and how they’re represented in shounen manga. It’s absolutely insane, and there’s also a reason for it.

The simplified reason, because lord knows I could write paragraphs on this, is that when media is not allowed to explicitly state that the characters themselves are queer or that yep those two men are exes who are still in love, they have to rely on subtext and getting the feeling across, and this can range from using tropes that are usually viewed as romantic in that genre, jumping around saying ‘I love you’ by spewing… well, something akin to a 19th century poet, etc.

When restrictions are put on you, you have to get creative.

Shounen has a lot of examples of this happening to my memory?

It’s honestly kind of impressive, and more often than not, we aren’t fools for assuming the subtext is hinting at ‘damn those bitches gay good for them’, because it’s in fact the author’s intent.

On a less serious answer though, FOR REAL ANON. I’m losing my mind over it on a regular bases. Shoutout to Gege for also being inspired by BL if I recall correctly, absolutely iconic.

10 episodes are already out! A small win for double male lead dramas and this one has literally been in storage for 3+ years?!! This one isn’t a danmei canonically as the canon is no CP if I recall BUT the bromance is off the charts 😳😳😳

Just to clarify: This is not classified as a danmei or BL - direct from the author herself 😭 technically there is a romance but it’s super subtle so there isn’t much to edit out and honestly I doubt it ‘opens the gateways’ to the other dangais super soon because ZGA was originally in a grey area (and the production advertised it as a dangai inaccurately against the author’s wishes and they were expectedly shelved)

Fic idea: genderbent Thraina

- GNC feels; Jaelin Proudmoore, who was discovering books & elven fashion while other boys were training with various improbably huge weapons, would have very different relationships with the various avatars of aggressive masculinity that populate Azeroth. Daelin was fine sending his daughter off to mage-land (where she had a much higher likelihood of meeting influential bachelors), but a son? After he’d already lost his eldest? There was definitely some friction, which I kinda doubt Daelin handled with much sensitivity

- Doomed homoerotic bromance between Jaelin & Arthas. What’s worse than your boyfriend doing a massacre? The straight friend you’ve been pining for calling you a weak little pansy for not being on board with mass murder

- “We need to flee our homeland instead of sticking around to fight for it” would probably sound very different to the masses coming from a silk-clad ivory-tower prettyboy instead of from the Fair Lady Jaina. Probably got him labelled a coward. Poor dude’s probably got a complex about it

- Can’t recall an overt sexism shown by the Horde, but all their leaders have been men (Except Sylvanas, which… I am not going to even try to unpack). So between whatever additional bullshit Giant Woman Thrall has to put up with in order to unite the Horde and whatever additional bullshit she suffered as a slave, there’s… a lot of room for Horrors there, & she might come out of it more cynical re: humans than canon Thrall was, which could set up to a stronger enemies-to-lovers situation with Jaelin.

- Also, Taretha— stuck on the idea of her & fem!Thrall surviving the Horrors with a viciously ride-or-die sisterhood. A human girl who has rejected her human upbringing in favor of Orcishness (due to the ‘savagery’ of ostensibly ‘civilized’ humans) could be an interesting mirror of canon!Thrall’s whole situation. Also, just. The visual. Scrawny blonde chick dressed in animal hides & knives, somehow more intimidating than her massive, warhammer-wielding sister, weirdly respected by all the fearsome orcish warriors. Growls at dignitaries. Smells like wet wolf. Can you see it?

- The sex. Obviously. Huge rugged warchieftess begrudgingly impressed by smol human prettyboy; considers carrying him off for Snu Snu. Also maybe tying him up, just a little. Various self-indulgent size-kink shenanigans. Ever wanted to be manhandled by a woman twice your size? Look no further
