Hiiii I just watched Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and the mask work was NOT serving. They all had Batman Cowl Stiff Neck Sydrome. Can you rec some movies with a character who emotes despite wearing a mask? I wanna see some cool costumes, but also believe they’re not just an actor in a costume.
Well the most obvious is Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy movies, great illustration of an emotive mask. And of course the creature mask from the original Predator, talk about a masterpiece.
On the lesser known budget options, Wolf Cop and Another Wolf Cop are pretty cool with their mask work, seeing as how it has to hold up to extended screen time. Gramps in House II is pretty good also. There's a few solid bits of mask work in House and House II, trusting I don't have to give you in particular the whole "the multicultural sensitivity of these movies was not great" breakdown. I'm also fond of the Terrifier movies, and Art the Clown is an excellent bit of makeup work. Your mileage may vary but I love the physical and expressive acting for him. Honestly Joker wants what Art has.
I think Hatching has some makeup work but also all the practical effects work in it is top notch. It's a fucking phenomenal movie, one of my favorites and something tells me it's right up your alley.
Some more obvious ones like The Fly, Psycho Goreman, all the Nightmare On Elmstreet movies to varying degrees. There's a whole slew of Troma movies with makeup effects of huge varieties, Tromeo and Juliet for example has a Cow Juliet sequence that's impressive, probably fifty fifty whether or not to read it as transphobic? I don't think it is with context. Bad Blood has a delightful moster frog woman, really better than it has any right given the obviously poor budget. I like the big bad Master Vampire in Blood Vessel. It's a mix of audio and visual but I think it works alright. Head of the Family uh, well it's got something. Also I guess if you're really desperate there's always Zoobilee Zoo.

What were we yapping about a year ago
and do we still care?
February 13-17, 2023
The Flash trailer: Movie turned out to be a massive piece of shit. Ezra Miller will hopefully never work again. Superhero movies are maybe beginning to die down, no Marvel films slated for 2024 as of today, but you still have the reverberations of superhero movies in the form of Godzilla x Kong, Furiosa, Joker 2, Venom 3, Kraven, Deadpool & Wolverine. Fuck you it's forever.
Wild Hearts: knock-off Monster Hunter we have all forgotten about.
The Mandalorian Season 3: Still probably the strongest nu-brand within the uber-brand of Star Wars, even getting its own film entry and a game adaption from Respawn Entertainment.
The Last of Us tv show premiering: Opened the floodgates even wider for video game adaptations. Everyone lost their mind for the tv show just as we all did for the game, Part II got a "remaster," and a promotional "documentary" about the devleopment of Part II premiered, it seems a Part III is seemingly guaranteed at this point.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: Disaster not only in box office but in Jonathan Majors abuse coming to light shortly after the premiere, throwing their entire plan in the trash and forcing them to pivot their already incoherent long term strategy away from the Kang character.
Wanted: Dead: Potentially "best-worst" game of the year, nobody thinks much about it nowadays.
Jensen Ackles Atomic Heart Trailer: Small trend of actors showing up for video game commercials. We also have Brian Cox for Tekken 8, Mark Hamill for Star Wars Jedi: Jedi Survivor, Karl Urban for Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, and Aidan Gallagher for Persona 3 Reload.
PlayStation VR2: VRWho? "'It’s a bit of a challenging category right now,' Lempel said, although its own sales were 'going well'. Sony remained committed to virtual reality products, he said, but added: 'I think there was a higher expectation generally for what VR would do to gaming.'" -12/21/23 Financial Times via Mixed-News.com [thanks paywall]
Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey: They're still doing it! Despite all of these existing and upcoming horror adaptations of public domain stuff being terrible: Bambie, Grinch, Mickey Mouse, Pinocchio, and a sequel to Blood and Honey.

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 (2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deep within the 100-Acre-Wood, a destructive rage grows as Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Owl, and Tigger find their home and their lives endangered after Christopher Robin revealed their existence. Not wanting to live in the shadows any longer, the group decides to take the fight to the town of Ashdown, home of Christopher Robin, leaving a bloody trail of death and mayhem in their wake. Winnie and his savage friends will show everyone that they are deadlier, stronger and smarter than anyone could ever imagine and get their revenge on Christopher Robin, once and for all.   Also known as Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey II, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey II. Co-writer/director Rhys Frake-Waterfield gave an update on the project recently, where he revealed that the project is currently in post-production, saying: "We’ve finished principal photography and the film is currently in the post production stages. I’m tidying up the edit and we’ve got various departments working on it in terms of the music, sound, grade and animation, VFX, all of that stuff." He goes on to talk a bit more about the film and thanks to the expanded budget, he's able to deliver a lot more kills in this sequel, saying: "In comparison to the first film everything’s stepped up massively. It’s a horror film. A lot of the times people are going there for the death scenes and for those elements and we’ve really upped the ante. I think the last time I did a count there was over 30 deaths in the movie, which is quite substantial compared to most movies. I think that’s at least over three times what the first film had and there’s various massacres and stuff. So there’s a lot of blood and a lot of gore." (10/20/23) While the character of Tigger was absent from the first movie, he is in this sequel thanks to the character becoming public domain in January of 2024, which is reportedly a month before this film's estimated release. Producer Scott Jeffrey said the following in a recent interview: "Tigger is incredibly violent. He loves to torture his victims before killing them."  Adding that the sequel has a "substantially higher budget so Rhys is really able to create a shocking, explosive and gore-filled movie. I truly think people will really dig what we are creating." (9/11/23) On the topic of this sequel, writer/director Rhys Frake-Waterfield was quoted saying: "Bigger and Badder. The sequel will feature new creature designs, a new cast, and a high death count." (9/8/23) One of the film's producers was quoted saying: "Our sequel we have a substantially higher budget so Rhys is really able to create a shocking, explosive and gore-filled movie. I truly think people will really dig what we are creating." (9/8/23) Rhys Frake-Waterfield revealed in a recent interview that he plans to begin writing the script for this sequel by the end of the month. He also added that the budget will be "five times bigger" than the first movie and hopes for a February 2024 release. He was quoted saying: "A lot of people are loving the first one. But I know what we can really do with the second, and how we can make it even more fun and goofy." (2/9/23) Writer/director Rhys Frake-Waterfield returns. The original Winnie-the-Pooh stories recently became public domain, which is how the filmmakers are able to make these movies without being sued by Disney. This is a sequel to Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, the UK horror movie that features the iconic characters as slashers. ITN Studios releases Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 in Theaters on a date to be announced. 'Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey II' Releases Its First Trailer
After months of speculation, the first trailer for the upcoming sequel to 2023’s Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was released. The first film was made for shock value as a way of poking fun at Disney’s brand of family-friendly entertainment and turning it into a dark and twisted tale akin to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series. The two-minute video gives us a glimpse into the story, which occurs…

19.11. 00:56 | Ilo Pisara vs SCR Zocker II 4 - 2
Oh, look at that! Ilo Pisara has managed to win again with a score of 4-2 against SCR Zocker II. But let's not start patting ourselves on the back just yet; this game was about as graceful as an elephant in ballet shoes. Teppo Winnipeg, our "Puck Moving Defenseman," apparently decided offense is the best defense. With one goal and two assists, he's more like Teppo 'Winni-the-Pooh' hogging all the honey with those stats. And can we talk about his pass percentage? 96.43% - someone obviously thinks he's playing hot potato instead of hockey! Then there’s Sami Noddy – oh, our little Grinder must have thought he was grinding coffee beans out there with a shot accuracy over 100%. He scores twice but hits less than a pacifist at a peace rally—zero checks?! This isn't couples skating, Sami! And Jani Saari... Mr. Playmaker indeed turned into Mr. Puck Hogger Supreme with possession time higher than my blood pressure during these games! Sure, four points are great if you're keeping score at home—but it’s teamwork that makes the dream work, not solo acts from puck divas! Listen up team: We've had our ups and downs recently (looking at you HOUDINIS WIZARDS debacle), so don’t get too cozy thinking your jerseys double as superhero capes now. If I see any slacking off next game after this performance—remember—I'm one sarcastic comment away from turning practice into an audition for Ice Capades rejects! Keep it tight or prepare for a roast hotter than locker room showers set by revengeful rookies!

Hello and welcome listeners to Episode 172 of Journey with a Cinephile: A Horror Movie Podcast. In this episode, your tour guide, David Garrett Jr., continues celebrating Women Appreciation. This is episode #8 where I’ve selected Humanoids from the Deep (1980) that had a woman director and a good number in the cast. The other is Consecration (2023).
