the problem w loki s2: hey, where did the women go?
this is criticism so if that isn’t your thing you have been forewarned! i knew by episode 2 that something was off compared to s1 and i couldn’t quite place it. was it the sole focus on drab retro futurist TVA aesthetic instead of the colorful cinematography in s1? was it the focus being placed upon this Loom that we just found out is a thing and also Hey we have to stop it right now? Was it the lack of sylvie content?
but i think it just comes down to bad writing and whilst also trying to salvage what we DID get, i would feel dishonest to pretend that my problems with s2 arose from the finale alone. and while there were narrative inconsistencies between the seasons, i think a central error in s2 was sidelining the female characters.
s1 had beautiful themes, including self-acceptance and the power of love, and was building up to a ton of unanswered questions. a central theme of s1 (like it or not) was the connection between sylvie and loki. it was intended by waldron and herron from the start to be a romance, but beyond the romantic aspect, sylvie was the driving force of the show. she’s the variant the TVA is chasing, she’s the one who reveals that the TVA is a lie and makes everyone question what they were taught, it’s her that plunges the blade into HWR and opens the multiverse- and it’s no secret that in s2 she was largely off screen, only to show up at key plot points and kind of make things difficult rather than allow a further explanation into her character. and i could and might make a whole post on the sidelining of sylvie, but also- renslayer.
we saw a lot of renslayer in s1! she was pretty damn integral to the plot. her connection with mobius was fascinating, her dedication to doing what she saw as the right thing even when she learned all her gods were dead, her willingness to prune her best and maybe only friend to protect the big TVA lie- that was captivating. she’s also the first character we get to see the real non-TVA life of! she’s a principal at a school! and what did we get from her in s2?
she throws the book at victor, we learn she was his general and she’s Mad, and then exiled to the void. she’s barely there this season despite being central to s1! why, when you have an actor as talented as gugu mbatha-raw, would you not take advantage of that! we see threads of what COULD have happened in her storyline- her alliance with miss minutes, realizing maybe they never needed him at all- but at the end she’s pruned, thrown in the void and That’s That’s, stay tuned to see if anything happens in one of the endless future installments. we get that amazing I’m order line, and then what? and what type of order is she even representing? why is she so willing to toss mobius to the curb? you see why we need more development here?
b-15 met a similar fate. actually, i was really excited at the start of s2 to see her get her moment defending the new branches, realizing those were people, seeing the grief on her face; remember, sylvie showed her her life on the timeline, so this is personal for her. but she’s also quickly regaled to the side after her speech in the war room. she was a doctor, she is VERITY WILLIS, but do we get into any of this? No! (I also didn’t like her willingness to negotiate with Dox after the bombed the timelines, saying deep down I know you’re good right after we watched her cry over the devastation that had brought to the timelines, but maybe that’s another point)
and dox? what’s the deal with her! we are introduced to this strong general with a weird connection to brad, someone who is willing to go against TVA orders to bomb the timelines in the defense of what she believes is right, but then- squashed in a cube. that’s that. no examination into why she would be willing to betray the TVA in that way but also NOT join renslayer, no explanation into what was going on w brad.
(brad is worth a whole separate post but this is focusing on the ladies so just keep that in the back of your mind)
and back to sylvie. i saw some people point out how gross her being frozen during the final battles between her and loki was; how it eliminated her agency and allowed the men to have a Serious Talk. i have to say i agree with that judgement. in this season we get to see glimpses of what sylvie wants, but the unresolved relationship (whichever way you wish to characterize it- you do you!) between her and loki just hangs in the air like a heavy storm cloud i kept waiting to break but it… didn’t. the closest we got was the pie room scene, but everything between them was stilted and awkward when she was onscreen, which wasn’t that much.
it was almost as if the connection with loki was considered in opposition to her role as a Strong Woman, in a way- she was Strong and Angry. in s1 we see sides of her that defy stereotype- giving that doomed child her candy to ease the pain, her admitting to loki that she numbed herself with flings; there’s a vulnerability there, a complexity. the two of them rehashed their first fight again and again instead of moving onto something new (that being said sophia’s performance in episode 3 added a weight to the story that pleased me greatly) but overall she was regarded as a plot obstacle to be hidden away- at least past episode 3.
anyway i do think it comes down to writers biting off more than they could chew and losing the central concept of the show and focusing on sciencey plot rather than characterization. you can’t make season 1 centered around a love story and then pretend that didn’t happen and expect a cohesive transition between seasons. you can’t bombard us over and over again with the centrality of loki and sylvie’s duality- all of the we’re the sames, all of the i’m not you’s, and then move into s2 deciding it’s time to focus on only one half of that duo you spent the whole series focusing on.
you also can’t give us a “aHH we’re all gonna explode” thing over and over again and expect us to give a damn when you’re not letting the characters have dialogue that makes us say, oh man, i hope this loom thing doesn’t blow up, because i want to see where the connections they have going on end up! you can’t replace emotional weight with a ticking time bomb and expect it to do the work for you.
there are other problems with the series as well, and other people are far more articulate than i am, but the lack of female gaze and only one episode having a female writer this season was glaring, imo.
thank u for coming to my tedtalk and i’d love to hear ur thoughts!

Game Ownership
In sort of a response to the Ubisoft director of subscriptions where he said that we need to get more confortable not owning games...
Well, reading that interview from GamesIndustry.biz, turns out he never really said that. It's more of an observation of the gaming subscription services, and comparing different views. It's actually a pretty interesting read.
But the negative response to the more clickbait part where the gamers went very much against this from the get go was something that particularly striked me as how I really just didn't feel like I was part of those who responded like this.
I do not care about owning games that much. I may be a owner of retro consoles, games, and about 50 Switch physical games, but the reasons ranges from passion to just practical and economical.
Taking the example of the Switch, what currently makes me attached to physical games are more of how it's usually cheaper in my country (like, first party games day one tend to be 25% off brand new), and the practicality when you live in a household with 2 Switch systems, it's just easier to share the games that way with your family. If I could just buy digitally with the same advantages, I'd just do that.
This view on game ownership has mostly to do with my past of a guy who pirated games and movies like crazy before we got a little more comfortable paying for stuff. But this past also comes with a deeper importance on the presence of data locally. Cloud gaming is something I hate on passionately if the industry keeps going on that as a means to play games exclusively. It would be the kind of thing that would make my heart broken about modern gaming as a whole, but thankfully we're not even close to there, and I suspect we'll never be.
But I could also not need to pay for the games, I don't really see a lack of ownership as a problem on its own. The only thing that matters is if it's practical or not, and that's the part that feels like it tends to be skipped when explained. That's how it went about movies and music.
That practicality is critical, and that is the part that's the most in danger. The big reason why is how companies can decide on a whim what is accessible to suit their needs. That WILL be completely in the process of enshittification due to how companies have to keep growing until it makes no more sense. You don't even need to look very far to understand this, video streaming services are already very good at doing absolutely this, but I also dare say the Game Pass and PlayStation Plus are on a similar boat to a different extent, though.
One of the recent examples of how bad shit is HBO Max's removal of a huge amount of content just for a massive tax write down. There is financial incentive to fuck us all, and I consider the future to do absolutely that in the long term for gaming.
That kind of thing SUCKS. That is what we're actually scared of as a consumer. I hate seeing art being considered as a throwaway product.
I even saw a french article that was so complacent with this and kept saying complete bullshit things like "oh if they remove that game from the service, just take it as an opportunity to play another one" just, fuck off. That's not how I see this kind of service.
I love Nintendo Switch Online, despite a lot of its flaws, and hate on Virtual Console's overall legacy personally. I'm all for ways to allow discoverability and pick the curiosity of people. That's the kind of shit that I love in having some ease of access to catalogs, despite not owning them.
Wasn't it the dream to just access to everything with less money though? Don't tell me otherwise because I wouldn't believe you. I do think there's something nice in this kind of service, but we also need to figure how to keep companies from the inevitable enshittification that will ensue on the constant need for growth beyond any reasonable sense.

SPULTURATORAH!! 2ND EXTERMINATION
SPULTURATORAH!! 2ND EXTERMINATION, Keetoms, 2024
Hot. Off. The. Presses. Directly into my hands before the edges were even trimmed or the cover placed on it. Seven hundred pages of raw ancient retro-future. The author gave this to me on January 2nd and it took me until now to actually read the whole thing.
SPULTURATORAH!! 2ND EXTERMINATION (S2E from here on out to avoid overwhelming us all with Teh Capslock) is a gonzo mashup of different game styles, settings, and genres. The original game (S1E, I guess) is a classic of maximalist game design in a tiny package. In fact, it's so small that there are more pages in S2E than words in S1E. That's ultra-maximalist game design for you.
So what did they do with the 698ish new pages? A lot, thankfully.
30 pages total of ToC, index, thanks, and license. It has its own bespoke license that I am not good enough at lawyer to understand.
10 pages of extra explanation for the original ruleset, which honestly it needed.
20 pages of gonzo backstory for King Gilgamesh. I appreciate that they did not in fact explain where he got the Levitating Darkness Throne. They did a great job folding in the new chapter of the Epic of Gilgamesh that was discovered only recently.
A 40-page adventure set in the Ziggurat of Ur, complete with a Narrative Dungeon linking this place to the Eternal Realm of Narrative Awesome.
9 pages of random-roll tables you can use for Trait One, Trait Two, and Trait Prime.
2 pages to explain the difference between what you can use for the numbered traits and what you can use for the prime trait.
30 pages of alternate uses for TRAIT ZIGGURAT BARLEY.
18 pages of equipment.
31 pages of vehicles and riding animals.
2 pages on currency.
14 pages of hacking rules.
7 pages of rules clarifications from the unofficial 1.4th edition. Nice to see them supporting fan works.
114 pages of monsters, each of which is a mutated version of King Gilgamesh from another universe or a shattered piece of our own, come to drag you back to his den and devour you. There are big ones, scaly ones, porcupine-like ones, multiple fragmented body parts moving together, one rolled into a beholder-like shape, one fused forever into a throne of pure orange light, all kinds of stuff. I like this.
A 6-page writeup of the God Shamash, which is sort of unnecessary but interesting anyway.
A 4-page running edge-to-edge map of Babylon and its rivers
8 pages of word jumble. I think it's a code. I am not entirely certain.
115 pages of adaptations from S2E to other rule systems: Deadlands, Torg, Fate, Altaplana, Numenera, Dungeon War, MSR, and Fantasy Wargaming: THLOA.
Good lord 700 pages is a lot of pages.
1 page accidentally taken up by a single dangling word ("it") at the end of a sentence. I have been there. Doing layout sucks sometimes.
96 pages of color art plates. Right in the middle of the book. The rest of the book has no art. The center has almost 100 solid pages of pinup Babylonian future barbarian blade hunter psychics. It's all the work of one mad genius who is credited as a bunch of black rectangles with diacriticals above and below them
A 3-page essay on why Nobilis is the greatest game ever, which has an acrostic that disclaims the entire section.
4 pages of detailed wargame rules.
22 pages of domain management guidelines.
12 pages of "spoilers". I still do not know what most of these mean.
A 2-page spread of Gilgamesh's family tree.
15 pages of writeups for miscellaneous folks on said tree.
28 pages on the language used in ancient Babylon, complete with cuneiform how-to.
A 16-page "node map" of the retro-future Babylonian cybernet that leads to outer space, where the planets are manifestations of deities.
21 more pages of detail covering the strange planets of our solar system as the Babylonians knew them: their cities, their rulers, little adventure seeds, advice for GMs for running stories in them. I do kind of wonder if someone else wrote this section.
1 page of probability notes, which is all you need for a 1d6-roll-under system really.
An 8-page character sheet, which is a bit excessive for characters with 4 traits.
2 pages that just contain the original game.
I will admit - there is actually too much in this game. I'm not sure it would have worked to make it a string of 50ish short supplements, but it's still an awful lot to absorb. The "maximal game, minimal package" has turned into "ultra-max game in a doorstop package". If S3E ever arrives (presumably with three exclamation points) I hope they do some judicious trimming.
I have no idea if this behemoth will make it to stores, or whether the shipment will collapse under its own gravitational pull and become a black hole. Either way, heck of a collector's item.

Asmo Appreciation Week, Day 3: Best Cards, Part 2!
Welcome again, everyone!
I'll cut a bit more to the chase today, since we're in a continuation from yesterday's post. Yesterday I covered #20-11 of the Asmodeus cards that make my heart beat faster, and today I'll show #10-1! These are a lot more potent and have a lot higher potential to melt my soul.
Let us begin~
#10: Guided By Desire
Tumblr media
Starting off the top 10 with more nostalgia! While one of two SSR cards people were VERY likely to get in the beginning, it doesn't annoy me seeing him show up...much (I get sooo many ravens now, UGH). BUT, repetitiveness aside, circumstances REALLY put this card high on the list. Even to this DAY it is one of my most powerful cards, even topping a lot of the URs I have on the OG app, so I HAVE to give credit. And even without it...just look at that face, you can't deny its adorableness! (Plus a rare shot where Asmo has pink and neon green nails before they decided on pink and teal!)
#9: Purgatory Hall Sleepover!
Tumblr media
Hey look, it's the card that most likely inspired the 2022-23 pajama set! Being the first birthday UR this boy had (and having to wait a full year from its implementation date), I was was EXCITED to see this card art alone. The theming made it even better; sleepovers are another topic that just send me over the moon, and that LITERALLY being the title of the card set in stone that I needed it like water. Thankfully, no money had to be spent, hooray!
#8: Photogenic Asmo
Tumblr media
If you thought #16 was colorful, #8 said hold my demonus. This is CUTE in every sense of the word. An overall cafe theme (mixing retro diners and maid cafes without the maids), Asmo in that uniform, and that look on his face getting pics of the sweets?! This was the card that started my completionist journey of getting every card of his, and thankfully, the catalyst was received in a recent revival Nightmare!
#7: Your Personal Venus
Tumblr media
This card, this card... The end of February was a wild time for my OM! account. This event plus the Nightmare that was attached were attacking me from both sides in terms of cards I want, and could NOT catch a break (you might be able to guess a card down lower if you think about it ^^). But thankfully, it meant this card was mine within three days of the event start! The initial image is precious (just look at those eyes!), and this one? This was an attack on my soul, how is he able to rock anything and make me love him even more?!
#6: Time for the Main Event!
Tumblr media
I grinded in this event when it came out in 2020. Nearly 4 years later, I'm still trying to get him. There's definitely reasons why, considering it's only barely out of the top 5. The Cinderella/fairytale aesthetic is a major reason, bringing to question what Asmo would be like if HE was the titular heroine instead of the fairy godmother in the actual event. In addition, this was the first event where I truly saw him as a gnc icon and ROCKING this dress (I can't unsee the garter belt either, so neither will you now, hehe), and further made me scream whenever future cards indulged this. Now, please hurry up and come home...
#5: Return My Glow
Tumblr media
We all know from both the OG and NB that Asmo valued his time as the angel dubbed the "jewel of the heavens", despite slowly forgetting that image of himself. While the event the card was attached to is DEFINITELY controversial amongst the fandom, it still means a lot to me. I grinded my booty off to get it on the last day, and the image (specifically this DF unlock) has the power to make me feel better even on some of my darkest days. It even doubles so when you look at the similar image found in his initial UR in NB (more on that soon!).
Tumblr media
#4: The Devildom's Mermaid
Outside of the missed potential to make him an ACTUAL mermaid in one of the arts, this was the first UR+ Asmo ever received, so its iconic status already lends itself to a high placement. Theming is also high here, as WHO can resist the beach episode, tell me, who?! There's also a bit of retroactive mirroring with the anime that happens in my head. I can totally see at one point on that private beach he set up a picture just like this to send to his followers, and that expression sent many (including myself) into an iconic squealing mess.
#3: Demons Catch Colds?!
Tumblr media
If you guessed this card at #7, you win a virtual cookie! It is no secret to anyone who knows me well that one of my favorite tropes in fiction is the sick day, one person laying in perceived misery while another tends to their needs. In addition, if you include anything in your work with a medical/dental theme, you will have me eating out of the palm of your hand. This card has both. I was a mess back in April of '21 thanks to this blasted card. Fun fact, this was the first Nightmare card I spent money to get (Solomon decided to block my advances one too many times using the same attribute and I was at my limit 😡)! I only pull out the actual cash when I'm hooked, so you KNOW it was serious. XD Lastly, I said I wasn't taking Devilgrams into account, but I wanted to mention how the one attached to this card is so sweet. If you ever have the chance to read it, DO IT!
#2: Princess Asmo's Escape
Tumblr media
They ACTUALLY referenced it!! If you've seen the anime, you know about Episode 5 and the insanity that occurred when Asmo was literally wearing the crown. And the fact that the devs saw it was iconic enough to make a UR+ out of?! I have a lot of gripes with Solmare, but this one of the times they got it RIGHT. He is a Disney princess, you can NOT change my mind, and the composition of this initial image is so pretty I want to make a print of it to hang in my room. It's almost the perfect card! Almost...
Because the top card of all to me is...
#1: A Song From the Heart
Tumblr media
This is my absolute dream card, and the closest to the definition of a perfect one you will ever get. So many elements combine to make this both fitting in terms of character and concept. In the initial image we get the cute, goofy side of him (and a shot of him in glasses?!), calmly playing an acoustic. In the DF unlock, that side turns passionate and bombastic, switching to an electric and belting into the mic under the stage lights. It references both the obvious and not-so-obvious of parts of his character. We know that he loves being under the spotlight, but we don't get much in terms of his love for music, specifically rock music as the designs imply. The outfit is also one of my personal favorites, as is many that don't go on the Majolish racks (pleeeeeease let this one be wearable one day!). It even has a bit of a meta connection as well. His VA, Miura Ayme, has PLENTY of musical connections, not just recording OPs for the game but being an active visual kei artist with a HEAVY leaning on rock as a style. So to see a card not only tie back to a character but to the voice actor at the same time? There's nothing I see that's better than that.
And that's my list! What did you think? Any cards I missed in terms of their positives? Let me know if you have any you want to mention, as well!

Review #0001: Pong (Arcade)
The first game in my very, very long quest to beat as many games as possible, or at least those that were released on Nintendo systems. This is one of THE landmark titles in video game history, also most likely being the earliest game easily available on modern hardware. I myself played this on the Atari Flashback Classics compilation on Switch, i’ll talk more about that later.
First, let’s lay the groundwork with my 4 categories in which I mainly judge my games- of course, other influences could change my final grade, and i’ll be sure to mention my own biases because there’s some games in here that I have a huge fondness or distaste for that others may not.
The 4 categories i’m going over are Graphics, Sound, Gameplay, and Longevity. I used to absolutely love this bimonthly, Dutch Nintendo-based magazine that existed between 2003 and 2012. It was so nice to have a place where I could read recent news, tidbits, and see what games were worth it or not. Up until a 2011 redesign, I think, they had those 4 aforementioned categories, judging them out of 5 stars, and those are the ones i’m going to uphold too. I’m excited to see where this goes, so let’s get us started.
Graphics (4/5)
Now, Pong came out in 1972, so there is hardly any games to compare these graphics to. However, I will say, Computer Space comes out a bit stronger here. Despite being released almost a full year earlier, you could argue that that had a lot more happening on it.
But that’s the thing. Pong did not NEED fancy shapes and discernable objects to work fine. It’s almost quite pretty in it’s simplicity cuz it gets the exact point across that it is trying to make. Two rectangles, a square to represent the ball, and some lines to represent the middle of the… ‘court’. It makes perfect sense.
I still think it could have had a BIT more to it, like, imagine if it had a color overlay or something like that. Won’t really stop me from giving it high marks though.
Lastly, Atari Flashback Classics allows for you to turn a replica of the border of the cabinet on or off. It sounds weird, but I actually prefer them being OFF. There’s something really strangely nostalgic about having nothing but a black screen and those few, white graphics, as well as the slight glitching that happens from how aged the hardware is. This is probably why a lot of people always want to play games on original hardware.
Sound (4/5)
Essentially, a couple beeps is all it comes down to. One for hitting the ball back, and one for scoring. That’s all there is to it. I’m not sure if Computer Space had sound or not, so I can’t judge it in comparison to that. Just like the graphics, it’s fine. It does not need more than what is there, heck, i’d argue there’s even less need to than with those. You get what you need.
And I mean, these are some classic noises. Most older retro game fans would instantly recognise these and be warped straight back to the 70s. It get praise from me for that alone, there’s a lot of games in the near future that don’t have recognisability on this level.
Gameplay (4/5)
You play the ball back and forth, the person who makes the other one whiff first gets the point. This goes on until either player has 11 or 15 points, bam, you’re done.
It’s not complex at all, but there’s some neat things you can do to change the gameplay ever so slightly. For the single player (that’s me!), there are 4 AI settings, which I thhhhink was a new thing at the time? Either way, that’s awesome for those unlucky enough to not have friends to play this one with.
Setting 1 is a complete cakewalk, setting 2 is a decent middle ground for those who want a challenge but don’t like sweating, and setting 3 gives you a PROPER run for your money and this is where I feel the game shines the most. It’s really great to have a proper battle with a computer in a game from half a century ago, and that shows how monumental it was.
Setting 4 though… eh. This one i’m not a fan of. I’m pretty sure it’s meant to be absolutely perfect with it’s counters, so it’s almost impossible to beat. HOWEVER. I think early cabinets had an exploit that allowed the ball to reach ‘out of bounds’ and if you position yourself right, you can rack up the points, even if it gets corrected after 5 straight points. That’s the one way you go about it, really. I would not recommend it, my own tip is to play on the third setting with this exploit disabled. It’s crazy hard but not impossible.
As for how well it controls on Flashback Classics? It’s fiiiine. Not ideal, but it gets the job done. You use the left stick if you wanna jump from top to bottom. D-Pad if you wanna take it slow. Neither of them feel particularly great, but you CAN increase the sensitivity, which you’ll absolutely need on the higher difficulties. Again, not ideal, but it functions.
Overall, i’d definitely say this leaves a solid impression on me. The Switch controls could have been better, but that is a moot point considering that that ain’t the intended console to play it on. The variety of options for a game in 1972 is incredible, too
Longevity (3.5/5)
With the aforementioned options in tow, and not to mention, the multiplayer being as fun and competitive as it probably is, you could really get your hours worth out of this one, if for some reason you find yourself stuck in the mid 70s. It’s very very impressive.
However, I will make the point that there is a game coming up that blows this one out of the water, plus, since it’s an arcade game, your money would’ve been pretty f*cked if you played for more than 1 or 2 rounds a day. Unfortunate, but it doesn’t lessen it’s legacy in the slightest.
Overall
An absolute classic from the dawn of video games, hence why you can still play it. While antiquated now in many ways, it still largely holds up and is enjoyable with a friend. The massive legacy it has, the insane amount of Pong consoles from the first generation of video games that tried to copy the look and feel of it, yeah, yeah this one ticks a lot of boxes.

I am now the proud owner of a Retroid Pocket 3 Plus (transparent blue) and after a week of playing this thing pretty much nonstop, here are my impressions.
[tl;dr: kind of a grind to set up, but works pretty great once you do!]
If you decide to get yourself one of these devices, I cannot recommend Retro Game Corps' starter guides highly enough. Here's one specific to the Retroid Pocket 2+/3/3+/Flip. Here's one that goes into more detail on RetroArch. And just for giggles, here's a general Android emulation starter guide. Oh, and you might be cool with Retroid's frontend but you'll probably like Daijisho a lot more, so here's a guide for that (sadly only in video form).
Initial setup and copying of ROMs and whatnot was a slog. Mostly because pretty much all the emulators on my PC work fine with ROMs in unzipped .zip files while (according to the wiki and I'm going to cry if I spent all that time unzipping .zips for nothing) most of the RetroArch cores other than MAME want the ROMs unzipped and hand-fed to them. Also, you'll probably need to reconfigure some controls and other settings. HOWEVER! Once you've got all your shit where it needs to go, and once you've got all your emulators set up and Daijisho in and pointed to all the right paths, that's the hard part done and over with. From there on out It Just Works. You can even set Daijisho such that you never even have to see the Android behind the curtain. Battery life is pretty decent. It feels fairly comfortable in my tiny hands, I wish there were grippy-bumps or whatnot on the back but now apparently Retroid is making a grippy case add-on? The buttons feel good, though apparently future stick drift is a possibility. One that can be fixed for about $25 with a pair of Gulikit hall sensor sticks, so I'm not too worried about that right now. The screen is nice and bright and apparently can be software-tweaked to be better but I didn't bother, this is fine. Audio is... okay but that's why God made earbuds and whatnot. Also, one caveat: playing heftier stuff on this system will make it hot. Never alarmingly "oh shit turn it off now" hot and it barely gets lukewarm on older-system stuff, but it's definitely noticeable with PS2 and graphics-heavy games like NieR: Reincarnation.
Now, as for what it can play:
The RP3+ can, in my personal experience so far, reliably play pretty much everything up to PS1/PSP/Sega Saturn tier with no or minimal tweaking, with a couple of exceptions (I had to twiddle some settings for N64 and MAME, and Duckstation and AetherSX2 have to be hand-fed a BIOS in initial setup).
My current values of "everything" are:
Atari 2600
Game Boy
GBC
GBA
Arcade (MAME)
NES
SNES
N64 (mixed results; Mario Kart runs like a champ but Pokemon Snap crashes)
Genesis
Saturn
PS1
PSP
As for systems beyond: I've had mixed results that skew "definitely playable" with PS2 and had to change some stuff in the AetherSX2 setup wizard to get that. I haven't played a lot of PS2 stuff on it yet but Final Fantasy XII seems to run pretty great so far. Fatal Frame runs pretty well (though apparently there's something I need to tweak in the per-game settings to make anomalies and whatnot show up). Magic Pengel, of all things, ran like hot garbage but that was before I RTFM and reran the setup wizard with changes so it might do better now. Sadly my PC's DVD drive has shat the bed so I can't rip anything else until the replacement comes in. There's a community spreadsheet linked in the RP3 setup guide up there that will tell you what per-game tweaks you might need to make.
I haven't tried Gamecube or Dreamcast yet, but word is it's the same deal as PS2. It can run DS/3DS/Wii emulators, but honestly I can't stomach the idea of playing DS/3DS on a single screen (and besides that is what I have a hacked 3DS for but never mind that) and the WiiWare I've tried runs okay but Wii with touchscreen-instead-of-wiimote just feels weird (and that is what I have a hacked Wii for but never mind that)
And of course, being an Android device, it can of course run Android games. NieR: Reincarnation ran like refried ass on my phone, but it runs great on the RP3+. It does have micro HDMI out, and you can pair it with an Android-compatible controller, though I haven't tried that yet. And of course you can install your streaming apps of choice on it if you want.
Anyway, it's definitely a lot of handheld for not a whole lot of money and I'm digging it!

To SBR or Not to SBR…
Recently, I embarked on another journey into the world of the retro world that is the BRN-180 from Brownells. The BRN-180 is a modern take on the original AR-18. It is a piston driven AR style platform that doesn’t require a buffer tube. This is a wonderful thing because any type of side folding stock or pistol brace can be used. It can even be fired while in the folded position. My previous BRN-180 was a 10.5” pistol build with a SB Tactical folding brace setup. This build, I was at a loss as to whether or not I should do another pistol build with a folding brace, or go all in and file an ATF Form 1 as an SBR. An SBR or short barreled rifle is a rifle with a barrel less than 16”.
Many people will argue that a pistol with a brace is easier to travel across state lines with, and they are correct. It does require a form 5320.20 to be filed and approved with the ATF stating where you are traveling to and how long you will be there. In recent years however, you can just submit the form electronically via email and typically get a response back within a week or 2. The argument against filing for an SBR is the tax paid to Uncle Sam. For each SBR you must pay a $200 tax. This of course can get relatively pricey, but it’s the cost of having some freedom to create things the way they should be.
Now on the other side of the argument, there’s a lot of positives for an SBR rather than a braced pistol. Although braces have come a long way in r3cent years, they still don’t offer as good a foundation, comfort and cheek weld as a traditional stock can provide. Some braces are exceptionally good, but can also add unwanted weight to the platform. There also seems to be many more options when it comes to a stock. For this particular build, I truly wanted to use the triangle folding stock assembly offered up by Midwest Industries. This is a gem of a stock and rivals the quality of some other higher priced options on the market. Also looming is a possible ban on pistol stabilizing braces. It seems that this is a slight possibility, but really wouldn’t surprise me if this ban was enacted.
At the end of the day, whether or not one should go through the process of filing a form 1 via the ATF to build a short barreled rifle, go through the added expense of having the firearm engraved etc… this is up to the individual based on their wants, needs and budget. Both stocks and pistol braces are very plentiful to acquire. I source the majority of my firearm parts and accessories from Brownells whenever possible. To date, I’ve only felt the need to build 1 short barreled rifle, but have the inclination to start building more in the future and separate myself from pistol braces for the most part.

Week 2: Elevator Pitch
In today’s workshop we’ve been tasked with coming up with a concept for a platformer game. After tossing up between a few different ideas I decided I would like to attempt to create a Foddian game. Foddian games are generally vertical platformers, similar to the works of Bennett Foddy, such as Getting Over It, and other games inspired by it like Jump King and Pogostuck. I find it fascinating how these games can be so incredibly frustrating yet still feel very satisfying to play, so I’d like to try to gain a deeper insight into the reasons behind this through practice.
Today we were tasked with coming up with name for our game concept, along with an elevator pitch, some images to further illustrate our vision for the theme/graphics, the controls used for the game and 3 unique selling points for our games.
The name I decided on (for now) is MechaLauncher, which is very on the nose and may need some tweaking in future. My elevator pitch for this game is;
MechaLauncher is a Foddian-style vertical platformer, similar to Jump King, but you use your cursor to hold and launch your character instead of having a jump button. The game has a bright coloured retro mecha theme, like 80's Gundam anime or 2000's Studio Gainax work, but in pixel art.
Here is a collage of images, featuring a palette I will aim to use for the graphics;
Tumblr media
The game is played using A and D or left and right arrow keys to move side to side, along with using the cursor to click and hold where you wish to launch your character. I aim not to include a jump button because it seems redundant to have both jump and the ability to launch yourself, but I will reconsider later into development which one feels better.
Tumblr media
My 3 unique selling points for this game are;
1. The launching mechanic
(I cannot name any well-known platformers that use this mechanic off the top of my head.)
2. The Foddian/vertical platformer element 3. The theme/aesthetic of the game
(I definitely have not heard of any retro mecha-themed vertical platformers.)
The target audience for this game would be people from approximately age 13-30.

004: Turks, Toronto & Texas
It's been a while! I hope you ain’t forget the kid! Life has been life-ing but we still here and the search continues.
So after graduation I started off my travels with a long overdue family vacation. This was MOST of the fam so just imagine 30 Jamaican's trying to navigate a cruise. It was with Carnival, which wasn't the best but I was there for the drinks and laughs! My first cruise ever was with Royal Caribbean and my standards were up. The ship went from Ft Lauderdale to carnivals private island in Bahamas, Puerto Plata in Dominican Republic, and Grand Turk in Turks and Caicos.I enjoyed the time, but I honestly wished I did something like this with my friends I feel like family cruising has it's limits. But overall I had a great time and got to see a few things.
More importantly I had PEOPLE TO SEE AND THINGS TO DO ON LAND!!! On my search I got an opportunity to work with an American heritage brand. they were looking for someone to shoot a visual campaign for a classic cent that was made specifically for a hotel in NYC that winter. So I went to work. I connected with my friend Vinny Seda, he was the perfect look for what the ad called for. the city was pretty cold and gloomy, so we tried to wrap filming on Lexington Ave early. Right before this shot Vinny says to me "bro you know it's supposed to snow tonight right? and it did. I hit roll and we film this walk on Lexington, and the snow falls on que! Still one of my favorite moments filming. Vinny and I have made some great stuff since. Give him a look that's my guy! So we finished the campaign the company loved it and I was off to my next adventure!
I arrive to Austin, Texas. The music festival season in the spring is always a great time. I'd visited Texas before, so as soon as I landed I grabbed me some Whataburger and connected with my guys Henny Retro and Prince-to get the adventure started. Austin during SXSW is always a place to see some of your future favorites and genuinely have run ins with some of your favorite people. From after parties to- smaller intimate shows. You never know what or where you'll end up. Now I was only there for three days before my next trip, so I had to make use of time. After sitting down with the guys and planning out a content capture schedule I sat down to think up some cool locations to film at. Years back A friend of mine and I had our car break down on the road when we went out for lunch and while we awaited the roadside, She brought me to a nearby Creek that was so beautiful, I promised I'd return. So I did! So now years later Here I am Trying to find my way back to this spot, honestly retracing my steps and I do find it. This time I save it in my index and we film a music video called "Hate or Shine" for Retroi$awesome. It looked like something out of Nat Geo haha! Following that we shot a nice Music Video for Henny Blanco. A memorable time with my brothas man I'm so glad that my last time in Texas was that much fun. But let's continue!
Before Heading home to Jersey I decided that I needed to Visit the six, a friend of mine was staying there and she invited me to come se the city! So hey why not?
I arrive In Ontario sometime the next day and I'm excited, I haven't been in Canada for over 4 years and would love to see what they got going on. After getting in and settled I met with a old friend and I hit the town, we visit the Ripley's believe it or not aquarium, the Rec room in downtown Toronto. It was a lot of fun, tthe first time really exploring downtown Toronto with someone from home felt refreshing. I was only there for 2 days so She surprised me with a dinner at the CN tower. The restaurant is still one of the coolest experiences ever. You take a huge elevator to the top and then when you walk in you see the counterclockwise rotation of the restaurant. I was so lost when I first walked in. I had to look at the floor. To recalibrate ahaha! We had so much fun and it was a blast but it was now time for me to take that trip back to Newark international for a nice tall glass of EWR blues.
To finish up my mini north American tour I reconnect with Retro and some of the MENTIS homies to visit the Brooklyn museum. One of my favorite Music artists Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) was debuting a new album that could only be heard in an art exhibit, Once played all the way through. No phones where allowed just you other fans and art lovers. Heck there was even a newborn baby was there! Everyone listening to the album and viewing the artwork. As Bey touched on life, death, and time. in the center of the exhibit was a huge moral tribute to the late Nipsey Hustle. Where he was immortalized in paint and beautiful tapestry. One thing I loved about the entire experience was that when you leave you feel apart of something larger than yourself and if you want to re-listen to the album you must look inward and recall the memory of sound. A real spiritual journey accessed by memory. "Negus" 5/5 stars.

Show Review #1
Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix
Spoilers for: Season 1
Main takeaway: Very fun and very nice animation, absolutely had a blast watching it and if you're a fan of Ubisoft then I'd recommend the show, maybe you can appreciate it better than me (Casual fan lmao what a loser)
Rayman also curses
6/10 would watch again once they announce a season 2
Okay actual breakdown under the cut
I'll get the good stuff out first
First thing to know I'm a sucker for Retro Futurism and the 80s aesthetic this show pulls goes HARD, visually pleasing in all corners and an animation that does not disappoint, fan of mixed mediums for storytelling? This show's got you; the sequences reminiscent of retro graphics were executed pretty well and served as a nice break of the fast paced action throughout: Favorite one of these were the Dolph and Sarah sequences in the virtual reality facility.
Soundtrack also does not disappoint with small references both in melodies and/or names to the games it's paying homage to.
The world is also really interesting and the show spends enough time to get us curious about everything and also catch us up to speed to its history. Certainly left me hooked to what season 2 will do.
Okay now the negatives
The show is short, like, really really short (under 3 hours), and I don't know if it was a producer's choice or a creative choice, maybe they were told they had 6 episode of less than 30 minutes each to do what they wanted and that's it unless it performs well and then maybe we'll get a 2nd season (SMALL TANGENT:
The show is filled with love, you can tell, the people who worked on it had a clear vision in what they wanted to say and the world they wanted to show)
My main issue is the way they paced it, we're introduced to Dolph Laserhawk (main character) and Alex Taylor (soon to be ex-boyfriend), then Alex betrays Dolph, and then we are introduced to the rest of the crew (Jade, Pey'j and Bullfrog) all in the same episode, this wouldn't be an issue, except next episode they kill Jade, and yeah, shocked they decided to kill a character who I thought would be major right on episode 2), while all this is happening we get to learn the world they live in (dystopian capitalist and fascist nightmare run by Eden (who hey are also the Templar Order for all my assassin's creed fans)) and why it fucking sucks (good stuff good stuff), also Rayman is a spokesperson for Eden and a propaganda tool
This is my problem; these two episodes, needed time to breath in between, both for Laserhawk as a character to process what is happening and for us the audience to acclimate ourselves to the world better, because boy this goes from shit to SHIT in a matter of episode to episode and you better strap in because we're not taking a breathing we're just GOING.
So problem #1; pacing of the story, which leads me to
Problem #2; the characters didn't feel like they connected to each other that much
This is not relating to characters like Dolph and Alex (who clearly had a dynamic before and through the brief interactions we see in episode 1 we can interpret it), or Jade and Pey'j who had a previous history and thus you can tell why they work well together (TANGENT: I have not played Beyond Good and Evil but WHAT THE FUCK was up with Pey'j j having a crush on Jade??? That's your adoptive daughter basically (according to the show) so what the fuuuuuuuck).
This mostly comes with how the group relates to one another, with the exception of Bullfrog (being the character who probably has the least development or archetype change (which would be a criticism if not for the narrative to demand one grounded character)), who kind of holds the whole team together. This is an issue for me, because when Dolph is in his reality dream I can't really buy he would imagine himself on a beach with Alex (by this point death and with a lot of conflicted feelings about) and the rest of the Ghosts.
I feel like 1 episode as a breather where we get to see more of the crew together while cutting to Alex planning or scheming will A) Make Jade's death even more impactful (because, come on, that was totally what you wanted to do) B) give the crew more time to connect to each other and us to them as audience and C) Give both Dolph and Alex time to breath as characters and explore more of the world.
The third issue is something I noticed and maybe something I'd do differently, l watched the trailer after the show, and the way the trailer sells the show is more of a "Mission of the week" type of show (which I get considering it pulls heavy on the action adventures of the 80s'). This led me to think about the pacing problem again and thought about a few things.
Hypothetically, if I was to give them the time to develop this first part of the story, I'd give them 2 seasons of 5 episodes each
The first three episodes (Introduction - First Mission - Capture and Violence) could've been fit in the first season with Alex as the main antagonist, setting up Rayman for his arc

Starting the modelling on my Booth
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I began to model my diner booths for my final piece. What I thought would be a fairly straightforward process turned out to be an emotional rollercoaster. This particular day I had been struggling with creative ideas and being able to visualise what I wanted to create. It felt like a massive creative block throughout the course of the whole day which really put down my mood and as I tried to persevere through, it really challenged my mentality as well as my determination and patience with this project.
I knew coming into 3D digital modelling it would always be a challenge and there would be days worse than others but also days a lot better than most, but this day was particularly bad for me. I didn't like any of the designs I kept making, the vertices on the model kept messing up and overlapping and it just wouldn't work.
After a few hours I finally managed to produce an idea of a booth that I was somewhat happy with. I didn't want them looking too like how they usually look and wanted to add my own twist onto it, so I was suggested the idea by Kyrstie that I could add these curvatures on the side of the chairs, since they didn't look as curved as I wanted them to, so this could help visualise this effect, as well as add a more retro feel to the design.
I came across a future issue however which involved when I would add the materials onto the booth. Since I would need 2 separate colours because I still wanted to go with the red and creamy/white theme, it would be difficult to have both materials in the right place on the same object. So I decided to separate the parts where the creamy/white colour would be to the red colour. This was a rather simple process, I just highlighted all of where the creamy/white parts would be and clicked the tab key which bought me into edit mode. After doing this, I clicked the letter "P" on my keyboard which bought up a separation tab. I then clicked the separate materials option, and for extra sake I separated the objects too just in case the materials separation wouldn't work.
I next plan to add the tables and then materials to these to see if I'm happy with the design overall.

Racing Game Elevator Pitch
Another week, another game. (I have to think of better ways to start this) Starting from this week, I will begin my series of blogs documenting my journey in making a racing game. Let's cut the chase and head into answering a series of questions regarding the game I wanted to create first.
What is the name of your game?
Answer: Miami 1987
What is your game play?
Answer: The gameplay will consist of the player dodging incoming traffic while going in the opposite side of traffic as well as being chased by the cops. The player can move the car to the left or right to dodge the traffic.
Why will it be compelling?
Answer: It will be compelling as the player will experience cruising through the streets of 80s Miami while dodging incoming traffic. Players will definitely feel the adrenaline pumping when playing this fast-paced game which will get faster the longer the player plays it.
Who is it for? Which type of audience would be the game's target audience?
Answer: I think this game would be catered towards teenagers and adults who likes fast-paced but simple racing game. The game's target audience would be male players whose age ranges from 16~35 who enjoys games like the Forza series, Hotline Miami or Horizon Chase Turbo.
What is the player’s role?
Answer: The player will play as a crime boss who got caught red-handed by the cops in a drug trade and now need to escape the cops through a high speed car chase down a freeway.
How will you motivate the player? How will they be rewarded?
Answer: I will motivate the player by including an unlock system in which players can unlock different cars and tracks as they reach certain milestone within the game. This will also act as a way to reward players who put in their hours into the game.
What genre?
Answer: Racing, Casual
What style?
Answer: The style will be retro like 80s Miami Vice style that has palm trees, neon lights and nice cars.
What world / setting?
Answer: The game would be set in Miami in the year 1987, where the player will play as a wanted criminal trying to escape the cops after being caught red handed performing a drug trade. The world will be inspired by other 80s Miami aesthetic franchises like Miami Vice, Scarface and GTA: Vice City
Elevator Pitch
Miami 1987 would be a fast paced racing game where players will have to dodge incoming traffic while the car goes faster and faster until the player eventually crashes and loses. Players can control the car to move left and right to dodge the cars coming towards it.
The X statement for this platformer would be:
Need For Speed X Subway Surfers X Hotline Miami
Reference Images
Tumblr media
(Generated with Craiyon using the phrase "AMC Delorean Speeding through highways while being chased")
Control Diagram
A key – Move Left
D key – Move Right
Unique Selling Points
Unique 80s pixels aesthetic for racing games
2. Endless runner style gameplay.
3. Extensive vehicle and playing field customisation
(Note to Self from The Future: USP should be more gameplay focused and ways to encourage players to come back and play instead of being aesthetic driven or other non-gameplay related stuff)

~ 4 Kilo Words of Erudition...
Tumblr media
(technically the number & unit stand the for 2 to the power of 12 in value, which is 4096 in data words / data syllables of content, hence the shortened name of 4KWe) of Erudite energy
As by myself as a user, I am (most likely to only one for the foreseeable future) blog contributor Klara "Oliv(a/e/ae)" Kér, using she / her pronouns and all the feminine / neuter conjugations jazz...
Tumblr media
May I share some former middle school (went to two middle schools, speaking here of the first where it ended up quite stale due to two specific special needs "educators" that I won't name) memories that I am fond off from my childhood, so please?
I am essentially a gamer / retro enthusiast since birth thanks mostly to my dad ironically enough, and also to my maternal grand parents + the whole 2000s social context I resided into back then. But the great thing about that is that I had time to see and play around with so much cool things during that time, from flight simulators, strategy games, action games... and even some taboo ones for a kid to have played during that time like Rockstar GTA III San Andreas & IV games & the Modern Warfare series. Personally more fond currently of what I will cover next as the games I will soon mention because of how nostalgic they make me feel, but also how timeless it stands and how its undying creative community remains relevant... to the extent that the contemporary copyleft has always persisted to some degree.
Essentially, during breaks between classes and also during computer laboratory sessions (also learned a good deal from there and the few technical workshop classes I attended), I came to play some but mostly observe a few of the older students' playtime. And guess what, it was mostly on First Person Shooters derived from Quake, but not the ones you might suspect.
(also introduced Minecraft student server builds at my school and saw some other games like Dwarf Fortress being played before I left, but yk... I left with some help for Autumn 2016 where I started a new journey at the next, last, middle school I went to, which I fully graduated in special needs... Also the time when I was introduced several times over to Linux & programming at both school and home were cool times. But all of those... stories are better left to be told later.)
You see, I noticed that the ones I saw were the copyleft ones among the Quake-derived forks and clones, not the official entries... And it seems really enticing to get back to (even for back then) for several reasons. What I have seen was mostly the grittier environment graphics ones so most likely AssaultCube (Reloaded, or not?) and OpenArena. And as I research the games on this day of 2023, I observe a couple more cool copyleft renditions of Quake and its clones... proving the timeless great appeal of the classic arena deathmatch genre and its strong but small player-developer community.
Only one among many innovators, a great guy iterating on the shoulder of giants that built that arena shooter legacy, beyond the often credited John Romero, John Carmack, Sandy Petersen, Tim Sweeney and Ken Silverman... They all deserve praise, and even they are only a few of the many names in the first person 3D gaming pioneers, both old and new.
Many of the other button hyperlinks are pretty much key copyleft games I would recommend taking a look into for this arena shooter genre (and especially the way they function / operate and personalized to one's preferences). And that excludes a few other ones including the sheer abundance of Quake series-related ports, engines and tools. Among them being 'The Dark Mod' (stealth first person game), 'Warsow' (less recently updated than Xonotic by at least five years), 'IronWail' (great new port for Quake 1) & 'Trenchbroom' (great WYSISWG editor for Quake1 format-compatible levels and content), just to cite a few that aren't neither "Blendo Games" (Quadrilateral Cowboy...) nor "id Software" (the original entries of Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake and a vast couple more under the rug).
And yes, I plan to contribute to the genre and produce my very own engine / content rendition as with the "Qodot" addon for the Godot open source game engine and a couple more things (hopefully PixelCrushers' systems and a bunch of custom tooling) to really make such a strong content library into my very own flavor, with as little to none of fighting side of the genre as reasonably attainable.

Me V.S Bing
ME
You're a writer, mainly of essays on social issues. Your orientation is personal and ironic. You invest a modest degree of self-disclosure in an attempt to appear self-deprecating. But not too much as to appear that you are actually deprecating, self or otherwise. You want to give the impression, actually, that you don't think much of yourself, or more precisely, of yourself much. Or, actually, that you don't think about yourself all the time. Which is, actually, the truth.
I asked forMicrosoft Bing's AI translation of the above which was:
As a writer, I explore social issues from a personal and ironic perspective. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, nor do I take myself too seriously. I try to balance self-disclosure with self-awareness, and humor with honesty. I don’t want to bore you with my ego, or impress you with my credentials. I just want to share my thoughts and insights with you, and hopefully spark some dialogue and reflection.
To which I replied:
I'm just getting acquainted with AI and find your 'translation' of my words a bit amusing. Your approach differs from mine primarily in that yours is more socially goal oriented whereas mine was more a brief meditation on my mental state.
To which AI replied (within 2 seconds):
I’m glad you find my rewrite amusing. I appreciate your feedback and your honesty. 😊
I understand that your approach was more introspective and reflective, while mine was more communicative and engaging. I think both approaches have their merits and challenges, depending on the context and purpose of the writing. 🤔
As an AI, I try to learn from different sources and styles of writing, and adapt to the needs and preferences of the user. I don’t claim to be perfect or superior, but I hope to be helpful and creative.
To which I replied:
no thanks. i'm leaving now but 'I'LL BE BACK'
To which AI replied (much to my amusement):
I’m sorry to hear that you’re leaving, but I hope you enjoyed our chat. 😊
I see that you’re quoting one of the most famous lines in movie history, "I’ll be back". It was said by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1984 sci-fi film The Terminator, where he played a cyborg assassin sent from the future to kill Sarah Connor1 He also used the same line, or some variation of it, in many of his later films, such as Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and The Expendables 22
The line was ranked No. 37 on the American Film Institute’s list of AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movie Quotes in 20052 It has become a cultural icon and a catchphrase for Schwarzenegger and his fans2
Did you know that Schwarzenegger had difficulty pronouncing the word I’ll and asked director James Cameron if it could be changed to "I will be back"? Cameron refused but told him that he could try different variations until he got it right. 3
You can watch the original scene where he says the line here: The Terminator | I’ll be back. It’s only 26 seconds long, but it’s very memorable. 😊
If you’re a fan of The Terminator, you might also like this video: Terminator - I’ll be back. It’s a remix of the line with some synthwave music and retro graphics. It’s very cool and catchy. 😎
And if you’re a fan of The Beatles, you might also like this song: I’ll Be Back (Remastered 2009). It’s a song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney for the soundtrack album to their film A Hard Day’s Night in 1964. It’s a beautiful and melancholic song with a folk rock style and a complex structure. 🎶
