About half of an average American building's energy consumption is spent on heating and cooling. That's a lot of money spent, fossil fuel burned and strain on an aging energy infrastructure during times of severe temperatures. It's also a problem UC Santa Barbara researchers Charlie Xiao, Elliot Hawkes and Bolin Liao are hoping to make a dent in. In a paper in the journal Device, the trio present an adaptive tile, which when deployed in arrays on roofs, can lower heating bills in winter and cooling bills in summer, without the need for electronics. "It switches between a heating state and a cooling state, depending on the temperature of the tile," said Xiao, the lead author of the study. "The target temperature is about 65° F -- about 18° C."

As college students across California prepared to close the book on another academic year, a deluge of antisemitic incidents swept across the state’s campuses in May, with students celebrating the birthday of Adolf Hitler at UC Santa Cruz and graffiting swastikas on the walls of a bathroom at UC San Diego. But amid the darkness, students at UC Santa Barbara made the historic choice to elect the school’s first ever Shabbat observant student body president.
Tessa Veksler, a third year political science major, was elected on April 27 as president of UCSB Associated Students (AS) with 51 percent of the vote. She will begin her tenure on Wednesday and over the next year will act as a liaison between UC Santa Barbara Chancellor Henry T. Land and the school’s 23,000 undergraduates.
“I hope that students realize that they can advocate for themselves and that the more there are observant Jews in the workplace, the more changes there will be to accommodate people like us,” Veksler told The Algemeiner on Tuesday.
Veksler, 21, explained that becoming president had always been a “far-distant” goal of hers. But Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, from which her family emigrated in the 1990s, compelled her to run.

California Braces for Historic Blizzard: Sierra Nevada Under Threat
Tumblr media
A powerful winter storm is set to unleash its fury on the Sierra Nevada from Thursday to Sunday, bringing record-breaking snowfall and blizzard conditions. ️
Here's what you need to know:

Mountain travel will be impossible due to blizzard conditions with near-zero visibility.
This storm is different from previous ones:
Colder and originating from Alaska, not Hawaii.
Stronger jet stream will push the storm system inland.
Potential for record-breaking snowfall at UC Berkeley's Central Sierra Snow Lab.
Impacts:
Heavy snow expected at lower elevations, including foothills and parts of the Bay Area. ❄️
Strong winds exceeding 110 mph on the Sierra crest.
Possible power outages and disruptions. ⚡
Stay safe! ⚠️
Avoid travel to the Sierra Nevada unless absolutely necessary.
Prepare for potential power outages.
Stay informed of the latest weather updates.

Beyond Moore's Law: Innovations in solid-state physics include ultra-thin 2D materials and more
In the ceaseless pursuit of energy-efficient computing, new devices designed at UC Santa Barbara show promise for enhancements in information processing and data storage.
Researchers in the lab of Kaustav Banerjee, a professor of electrical and computer engineering, have published a new paper describing several of these devices, "Quantum-engineered devices based on 2D materials for next-generation information processing and storage," in the journal Advanced Materials. Arnab Pal, who recently received his doctorate, is the lead author.
Each device is intended to address challenges associated with conventional computing in a new way. All four operate at very low voltages and are characterized as being low leakage, as opposed to the conventional metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) found in smartphones that drain power even when turned off. But because they are based on processing steps similar to those used to make MOSFETs, the new devices could be produced at scale using existing industry-standard manufacturing processes for semiconductors.

Closing in on my Freshman year, I can genuinely say that being in a sorority has only positively impacted my life. Here are some of the main reasons why I’ve loved my experience and why you should consider joining one, too!

Hi Mr Gaiman,
You might not remember this, but you spoke at UC Santa Barbara back in 2010 as part of their Arts & Lectures series. Before your lecture, you first had dinner with some donors, their son, and their son's new girlfriend. That girlfriend was me. In our nervousness, bf and I only brought my set of books for you to sign, so you signed them to both of us. We joked that now we had to stay together forever, for the books.

Well, our daughter turns six next week and we're about to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. Thank you for your books, one of the first things we ever bonded over.
That put a big smile on my face. I'm glad.

dr. carlos dave robles, age 46 years, from pamona, ca. graduated with his ba in marine biology from uc santa barbara before being accepted at the university of what it is. after graduating at the university he became a professor and later achieved tenure. he took what was meant to be a brief sabbatical to test his theory about a strange town, which brought him a substantial amount of funding and a fair deal of notoriety. after a few years of inconsistent correspondence with the university a search team was sent to find him, with no luck. eventually dr. robles' position was filled and his portrait was removed from its place in the university, as he was considered not only lost but disgraced.
