Pitchfork Music Festival 2023: 5 Can’t-miss Non-headliner Sets
Tumblr media
700 Bliss
BY JORDAN MAINZER
After four long years, yours truly finally returns to Pitchfork Music Festival. While the pandemic cancelled 2020′s iteration, contributor Daniel Palella filled in for 2021, and we entirely missed 2022 (I got married!), four years lacking Chicago’s most laid-back, yet forward thinking festival proved to be too many. While I can’t wait to see The Smile, Big Thief, and Bon Iver, I’d be remiss not to recommend these 5 can’t-miss non-headliner sets.

FRIDAY
Youth Lagoon, 4:15 PM, Green Stage
Last month, Trevor Powers released Heaven Is a Junkyard (Fat Possum) his first Youth Lagoon music since 2015′s Savage Hills Ballroom. If earlier, beloved Youth Lagoon records were miniature epics that embraced a sort of hazy nostalgia, Heaven Is a Junkyard is more subdued, soulful, and limited in scope. It’s also Powers’ most focused and best record, the deepest he’s dived into a world. In 2021, Powers lost his voice as a result of a horrific reaction to an over-the-counter medication, eventually losing 30 pounds and, temporarily, his ability to speak. As a result of the unfortunate circumstances, he went into a deep depression, but thankfully decided to focus his energy on Idaho, and ultimately, his songwriting and the return of Youth Lagoon. Heaven Is a Junkyard could be difficult to listen to, with images of blood-stained clothes and drug addicts sleeping outside on mattresses. It’s not because of Powers’ embrace of his surroundings. “Heaven is a junkyard / And it’s my home,” he sings on “The Sling”. His clear sense of empathy for the downtrodden shapes his familial perspectives, too, thankful for brotherly love, even if disguised as roughhousing, on “Prizefighter” and “Trapeze Artist”. And Heaven Is a Junkyard is musically adventurous, too, from the looped drums, handclaps, and cello of “Mercury” to the ghostly synth arpeggios of “Helicopter Toy” and disintegrating ambient instrumental interlude “Lux Radio Theatre”, which wouldn’t sound out of place on a Boards of Canada album. Live, expect to hear much of Heaven Is a Junkyard along with cuts from the first two Youth Lagoon albums.
SATURDAY
700 BLISS, 2:30 PM, Green Stage
One of our favorite albums of last year was the sophomore LP from 700 BLISS, the venerable duo of poet/musician Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother) and DJ Haram. Nothing To Declare, their first record for Hyperdub, traverses genres (techno, noise, ambient) and moods (serious and political, facetious and sarcastic). Get there early on Saturday for some heady words and beats in the sun!
Tumblr media
SUNDAY
JPEGMAFIA, 4:15 PM, Green Stage
In 2019, rapper JPEGMAFIA gave the most energetic set at Pitchfork. This year should be no different: Since then, he released one of our favorite albums of that year mere months later, a very good follow-up two years after that, and this year, a collaborative album with his favorite rapper, Danny Brown. He’s called the new one, SCARING THE HOES (Awal), a “practice album,” made with the SP-404--no Pro Tools--after learning it for a year. It certainly has that loose quality you’d think, alongside the exact amount of chaos you’d expect from the debut full-length join-up from these two. Of course, Peggy finds kinship in the deep cuts and the underground, from the underappreciated Bun B to old soul and funk, Japanese pop, and gospel. The samples and production are inspired. At the same time, Peggy knows he’s your favorite Twitter follows favorite rapper, so the title itself, referring to something a Very Online Man would say who thinks his taste is too esoteric for women, is tongue-in-cheek. “How the fuck we supposed to make money of this shit?” Peggy asks on the title track. “You wanna be an MC? What the fuck you think, it’s 1993?” The only thing better than effortless tempo changes, switches on a dime from maximalism to dreamy instrumentation, is self-awareness of his own idiosyncrasies. Bonus points for “God Loves You”, which juxtaposes a guttural, spirited gospel sample with the filthiest lyrics on the album.

Sarah Tudzin of illuminati hotties; Photo by Seannie Bryan
illuminati hotties, 5:15, Blue Stage
It’s been a big past few years for Sarah Tudzin, the frontperson of LA indie rock band illuminati hotties. Their 2021 record Let Me Do One More (Hopeless) was released to acclaim, one of our favorites of that year. She contributed a remix to the deluxe addition of the latest Stars album as well as production to a few songs on boygenius’ the record. Best, she’s apparently finishing up her next record. Perhaps the first taste of it is “Truck”, released yesterday ahead of the band’s Pitchfork performance and tour with boygenius. It’s a slice of gentle, lilting Americana, a song about chasing your dreams versus learning to live with reality. Expect to hear it during the band’s set at Pitchfork, along with some rambunctious, hilarious back catalog jammers.
Tumblr media
Kelela, 7:25 PM, Red Stage
The brilliant R&B artist’s second studio album, Raven (Warp), is a culmination of a period of reflection following her debut album six years prior, Take Me Apart. Despite electronic dance music’s Black and queer origins, Kelela’s feeling restrained within the music world as it exists today, within its white, male hegemonic power structure. She’s keeping on anyway, and on Raven, she delivers a brilliantly paced back and forth between club jams and slow burns, beat-heavy tracks and ambient expressions. There are plenty of songs about relationships and the dissolution thereof, but Kelela can control what she can control: her artistic voice. “Through all the labor / A raven is reborn / They tried to break her / There’s nothing here to mourn,” she declares on the pulsating, zooming title track, as the instrumentation gradually and masterfully builds with sprinkles of piano and dramatic strings. And on standout “Contact”, Kelela captures a night out, from the come-up to the club or party itself. It’s a dance song that could have dominated the charts in an alternate 90′s universe. One thing’s for sure: It’ll be a highlight at this year’s festival.

I don't think either approach is bad but there's a certain irony in RTD era companions travelling full time with The Doctor but the audience sees their families a lot, but Moffat's companions travel part time but the audience hardly sees their family.

i’ve reached a new level of autism where i’ve just turned doctor who characters trans in my head for no good reason; here it is!
rose tyler — non-binary, any + star/stars + wolf/wolfs
she would learn about more gender and pronouns and how different it is in other planets through travelling with the doctor and would experiment with they/them at first, but would still use she/her. then they’d use he/him & eventually learn about neopronouns + xenogenders and most likely would use star/stars & wolf/wolfs.
mickey smith — transfemme, she/her + they/them
(i’ve been vibing with mickey being transfemme & a butch lesbian for a minute) (i’m obsessed)
SO. i think mickey figured out she was trans early on, she just didn’t know what the feeling was. she saw rose & jackie shopping and was fascinated by it all. they thought dresses and skirts were pretty & was very upset when they got told she couldn’t wear it.
then she meets sally and everything changes. she knows what being trans is & she knows that those conversations are on the table. so, after a lot of research, mickey learns that’s who they are. (in my head they identify as demigirl, but are comfortable with the non-binary & trans labels too)
also small hc that mickey helped cleo with their coming out journey, since rose used to babysit her teehee
donna noble — agender, all pronouns
donna has way too much going on to worry about her gender, however after rose, donna learns some people just don’t really feel a connection with gender & don’t really “care” about gender, which resonates with him, so they adopt the agender label & welcome all pronouns, including neopronouns as well.
bill potts — genderfluid, any pronouns
this was possibly the first head canon that came to mind & it happened before i ever really thought about using the trans beam on any other character.
you see a character called bill potts and you go well that can’t be a cis person
i feel like bill has just always known they were genderfluid. she’s always known their gender fluctuates and he’s always been okay with it, once they found the label it filled them with an insane amount of gender euphoria (which only intensifies after learning the doctor & missy are trans too)
amy pond — transmasc, he/him & rory williams — transfemme, she/her + they/them
to me, amy and rory go on very similar journeys & they go on them together. amy figures out his gender through her kiss-o-gram jobs, he feels sexualised as he’s seen automatically as a woman and that makes him dysphoric. then he researches (as we’ve all done, why do we feel wrong in our bodies!!!!) and finds comfort in the transmasc label.
as for rory, it all starts when amy asks her to dress up as the doctor — she loves this person more than life itself, so of course she’s going to do it but something feels wrong. she wants to rip the clothes off and never think about the situation again; but then it starts happening with their regular clothes — it makes their skin itch and they do not like it. eventually they talk to amy (or rather he figures out somethings wrong with rory and convince him to talk), and the two have an honest conversation about what it all means. (obviously this changes nothing in their dynamic + relationship & they’re very supportive of each other)

I want to see Jordan Peele do a zombie movie, where the leading cast are the black actors (the more prominent ones) from The Walking Dead whose characters died on the show.
Chad Coleman (Tyrese)
Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha)
Tyler James Williams (Noah)
IronE Singelton (T-Dog)
And they could do something that pays homage to Duane Jones, who starred in Night of the Living Dead.

best weekend ever. best bands ever. the saturday show was my favorite show I’ve ever been to, and being barricade sunday at RF and seeing the crowd both bands had was an insane feeling. I love TAI. I love midtown. I could talk about this weekend for days and never get tired.
specific highlights: sisky saying I’m the reason they keep coming back to do more shows (it was a joke and he meant it more broad but idc it made me laugh). carden giving me a pick, and hyping me up way too much, and making sure I knew he’d find me in the crowds (he did :’)). tyler throwing me a pick & making sure the security guard knew to give it to me when it fell in front of the barricade. also like, all of snakes on a plane. I blacked out. but specifically gabe leaning over to let me sing into the mic two different times, and also making very DIRECT and prolonged eye contact with me at all times but specifically when he came on stage and hugged bill right before SOAP like he was seeing right into my gabilliam truther roots.

Like the music in the new Hunger Games movie but not really know anything about folk/bluegrass/country? Here are some quick recs to get you started!
(This is not comprehensive and the genres here are a little whack, these are just songs I listen to as someone raised on good Appalachian vibes. Not necessarily from just Appalachian artists, particularly in the second section. Just think it’s nice that people are getting more exposure to folk + bluegrass!)
Protest Songs / Coal Criticism
(Hazel Dickens I would give you smooches.. also these are just the ones living in my playlists rn)
“You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive,” Patty Loveless
“The L and N Don’t Stop Here Anymore,” Jean Ritchie
“Coal Tattoo,” and I’m exercising my free will and linking the Hazel Dickens version
“The Yablonski Murder,” Hazel Dickens
“Coal,” Tyler Childers
“Trip to Hyden,” Tom T. Hall
“Coal Miner’s Daughter,” Loretta Lynn
“Devil Put the Coal in the Ground,” Steve Earle
Assorted Personal Favorites
(where my love for Sierra Ferrell is really on display)
“West Virginia Waltz,” Sierra Ferrell
“Across the Great Divide,” Nanci Griffith
“Blue Ridge Mountain,” Hurray for the Riff Raff
“Iowa (Traveling, Pt. 3),” Dar Williams
“Rhododendron,” Bella White
“Boulder to Birmingham,” Emmylou Harris
“Silver Dollar,” Sierra Ferrell
“Hands of Time,” Margo Price
“Lilacs,” Waxahatchee
“Way of the Triune God,” Tyler Childers
“The Dreaded Spoon,” Ricky Skaggs + Bruce Hornsby
“Preacher in the Ring, Pt. 1,” Bruce Hornsby
“The Green Rolling Hills of West Virginia,” Hazel Dickens
“Rocky Top,” The Osborne Brothers
“Do You Think About Me At All,” Bella White
“In Dreams,” Sierra Ferrell

Hey y'all, so I saw that a lot of people over Tumblr were like "There should be a Doctor Who High School AU where the Doctors are brothers, why isn't there one", and I agreed with all my heart. For the longest time, I didn't want to write it because 1. I'm lazy 2. Haven't watched the whole show yet so I didn't see myself doing it 3. I haven't finished anything in so long.
But now this adhd b!tch takes Ritalin. Don't have school anymore. Might start working soon but still, that means no homework.
So I started doing it. An AU where Nine, Ten and Eleven are brothers and Twelve is their emotionally constipated adopted father. The companions are their friends at school and Clara Oswald is the nice English teacher and Cassandra O'Brien is the evil maths teacher.
I already wrote chapter 1 and a long bit for later in the fanfic but I need to finish watching the show before continuing it.
If I finish/if I'm consistent in my writing enough that I know potential readers wouldn't wait too long between chapters, then I'll post it on AO3.
It's taking me some time cause I have to look up sometimes which words and expressions are purely American and which I can use in British English, and I had to do some research on Secondary School in Britain and how classes work, being French and all, and I'm even making a school schedule for the characters cause that's how deep in this sh!t I am.
Here's the characters that will appear (in alphabetical order):
-Amelia Pond
-Cassandra O'Brien
-Clara Oswald
-Donna Noble
-Eleventh Doctor
-Lance Bennett
-Martha Jones
-Nerys Clarke
-Ninth Doctor
-River Song (hiding her real name cause spoilers)
-Rory Williams
-Rose Tyler
-Tenth Doctor
-Twelfth Doctor
I also found some cool names for each Doctor but again, spoilers :)
So anyway, I'm excited about this, thought I'd share this with you guys, I really hope I manage to finish it!

Did Henry Tudor meet Elizabeth of Edward IV of England and York in house of york?
Hello, I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you asking if Henry Tudor ever met Edward IV and Elizabeth of York whilst Edward was still king? It's impossible to know, but there might actually be a possibility that Henry met Edward IV (less likely he met Elizabeth imo). To be clear, this is a personal theory based on some of the testimonies given for Henry and Elizabeth's marriage dispensation in 1486.
William, earl of Nottingham (64 years old): 'says that he has known the aforesaid prince Henry well for twenty years and more, and the said lady Elizabeth for sixteen years' => That means he knew Henry since at least 1466, and Elizabeth since 1470/1.
Sir Richard Croft (54 years old): 'says and answers that he has known king Henry well for twenty years, and the said lady Elizabeth for sixteen years' => Again, that means he knew Henry since at least 1466 and Elizabeth since 1470/1.
Sir William Tyler (43 years old): 'says that he has known prince Henry [now king] well for twenty years, and the lady Elizabeth for twelve years' => That means he knew Henry since at least 1466 and Elizabeth since 1470/1.
Those two dates are relevant to the Yorkist establishment (hold this thought). I think it's possible those three men first met Elizabeth of York as she fled with her mother and siblings in 1470 to the Tower and then to Westminster Abbey, or they might have met her in 1471 when Edward IV returned and rescued his family from sanctuary. I don't know exactly what kind of ceremonies were held after Edward's triumph over the Lancastrians but it's possible Elizabeth was present on those occasions.
Some of the other witnesses said they knew Henry for sixteen/fifteen years as well — specifically Christopher Urswyck (Margaret Beaufort's confessor) and Sir William Knyvett. It would make the most sense for the majority of people to say they knew Henry since 1470/1, considering Henry Tudor came to London during the readeption of his uncle Henry VI, and would have met the courtiers at that time. But those three people* — the Earl of Nottingham, Sir Richard Croft and Sir William Tyler — said they knew Henry at least since 1466. What was Henry Tudor doing in 1466?
At that time Henry was a 9 year-old in the custody of William Herbert, an important representative of the Yorkist king in Wales described as 'King Edward's master-lock'. It's possible William Berkeley (later Earl of Nottingham), Sir Richard Croft and William Tyler all knew Henry from visiting the Herberts in Rhaglan Castle**, though it's impossible to say if they had any degree of personal friendship with the Herberts. In 1466 there was however an event that was of importance for both the Herberts and Edward IV.
In that year William Herbert married his eldest son and heir to Mary Woodville, the king's sister (in-law) in a ceremony that took place in Windsor Castle, one of the king's residences. It was apparently such a great event a Welsh poet later praised it in one of his poems dedicated to Willaim Herbert:
The foremost king of Britain and its realm / Gave his sister to him / He held a great wedding-feast in Windsor / For this man, in his royalty / A generous feast for our lord who is of our tongue, / May he be seen again as a prince!
This is pure speculation but I ask myself: is it possible William Herbert took his whole family to Windsor, including his ward Henry Tudor, for his son's wedding feast? If so, many Yorkist partisans such as the Earl of Nottingham and Sir Richard Croft would have had the opportunity to meet Henry on that occasion — in turn, Henry would have had the opportunity to at least see King Edward. Of course there's no way to really know that whilst no concrete evidence comes up, but it's fascinating to think Henry might have seen/know Edward IV.
This isn't taking into account, for example, the possibility that Edward IV might have visited William Herbert at Raglan in one of his travels, to which Henry would have seen him as well. A royal visit to Raglan is the only way I can think of that Henry might have seen Elizabeth of York, as she was only merely a few months-old at the time of her aunt's wedding in Windsor, and would not have attended the ceremony. Furthermore, if Henry and Elizabeth had been present on the same occasion/wedding the three witnesses above would have given the same number of years for knowing them both***, which was not the case.
However, I think a royal visit from Edward IV to Raglan is less likely, given it was not documented anywhere, not even in Welsh poetry, and William Herbert was enough of a patron to have this visit documented in that way. So all in all, I think it's very unlikely Henry Tudor ever met Elizabeth of York before 1485, though I think there's a slight chance that he have met Edward IV in 1466. Again, this is all pure speculation, though.
_____________
* It's important to notice that all three were Yorkist partisans: Sir Richard Croft fought at Mortimer’s Cross, Towton and Tewkesbury on Edward IV's side — he and his brother were tutored with or were the one who tutored Edward whilst Earl of March and his brother Edmund in Ludlow*. Apparently the letter Edward and Edmund jointly wrote to their father Richard of York complained about Sir Richard Croft and his brother. The Crofts were neighbours of the Mortimers, which then encompassed Richard of York and his sons. The Battle of Mortimer's Cross took place on Croft soil. Sir Richard's wife Eleanor ran the household of Edward Prince of Wales, Edward IV's son, and his younger brother (also called Richard Croft) was one of Edward's tutors in Ludlow. Henry VII later made Sir Richard Croft his treasurer, and also made him Prince Arthur’s steward in Ludlow later on.
William Berkeley was created Baron Berkeley by Edward IV and became one of his privy councillors in 1482/3. He might have been the same William Berkeley, knight of the Body, who was attainted in Richard III’s Parliament and joined Henry in exile. It would be weird for the act in Parliament not to mention his title, though, since he was created Earl of Nottingham two days after Richard III was declared king. Either William Earl of Nottingham or this other William Berkeley, knight of the Body, hosted Margaret of York when she visited England in 1480.
** It would be really awkward if William Berkeley (later Earl of Nottingham) was intimate enough to visit the Herberts, considering he killed in battle William Herbert's son-in-law, Thomas Talbot, 2nd Baron/Viscount Lisle (Margaret Herbert's husband) after Lisle challenged him to a trial of arms over the Berkeley lands in 1470. Lisle had been Herbert's ward in the same way Henry Tudor had been. His wife Margaret Herbert miscarried a boy shortly after his death. I believe this is the dowager Viscountess of Lisle that Henry granted a financial settlement in 1492.
*** For example, Sir William Knyvett said he knew Elizabeth of York from the day of her birth 🥺 (and had known Henry for fifteen years, that is, since 1470/1 the Readeption years).
