TIL why so many blacksmith/forge gods in ancient mythologies have physical disabilities: arsenicosis, caused by the low yet poisonous levels of arsenic added to bronze to make it harder. Making tools and weapons every day at work would result in lameness and skin cancers for smiths of the Bronze Age. And I don’t know, but there’s something really sweet about how, when humans created divine beings to epitomize the world around them, they didn’t erase the chronic illnesses of the blacksmiths they knew. Instead, they elevated them to godhood.

Gold was frequently mined and used to manufacture a range of decorative and ceremonial objects in Bronze Age Britain. But in contrast to other areas, it seems that people were not exchanging pieces of gold as currency.

i wanted to make a printable version of the poster in peter's chelsea apartment:
Tumblr media
but went down a rabbit hole of what it references (and what it probably should look like) but ohhhh my god it's something that you could literally set your watch by it's such a specific cultural mash up of a meme that it's like....100% incomprehensible unless you go on a hyperfixation deep dive so....
like OK firstly it should probably look like this:
Tumblr media
(or if not the individual red boxes at least a solid red background)
but 1) that would have been too cumbersome to detail out for every panel, 2) it would have reverse-out text which would be dicey to print legibly, and 3) using the actual burma-shave logo prob would have been more of a stretch to drop in without getting copyright annoyances even though burma-shave was bought out in 1963.
but yeah so basically from what i can tell, this is an incredibly hyper-specific example of goofy irony-poisoned 70s humor.
the phrase 'every day in every way i am getting better and better' is basically a self-affirmation line developed by the french psychologist émile coué in the 1920s as part of a method which used this kind of mantra to attempt to influence the subconscious to manifest it. the coué method remained steadily popular but had a specific resurgence during the counterculture movement in the 60s and 70s -- the beatles even dropped it into a few songs. so it would have definitely been having its moment right when the chelsea apt gets its second-hand makeover.
also from like the 30s up until the mid-to-late 60s shaving cream company burma-shave had these ubiquitous highway advertisements that involved putting one or two words of a little rhyme on small red signs in order along a road, always ending with the burma shave logo:
Tumblr media
these started out with little cutsey poems about shaving, but eventually (as above) started going into road safety advice -- always punctuated by the burma-shave logo
so the poster in peter's apartment, which first shows up in asm163 in 1974, is a mashup of the two things. the way that the lines of the affirmation are broken up (one or two words on a line) refers to the layout of the burma-shave signs hence 'burma-shave' being the last line.
and like i said, it's kind of irony poisoned meme -- the idea of this new-age psychological resurgence being framed as just another advertising campaign using life advice to sell a product (double-layer of irony bc the referenced campaign is for a product that had been bought out and slowly phased out by the time this issue dropped).
so yeah. lmao. like i said a reference you could set your watch by it's so unbelievably specific! haha i feel like i've got to print it out now.
