I was asked to a piece featuring Batgirl by a friend and long time supporter of my work. I was racking my brain trying to get a unique angle on the piece. I always wanted to draw Man-Bat. The idea of his arm around her, almost like he's trying to protect her was my hook. She has an expression of defiance, like she doesn't need him. Maybe they need each other and don't want to admit it. Sometimes relationships are that way, right? #batgirl #manbat #dccomics https://www.instagram.com/p/CpJ4F1tu_eq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I know something like this might come off as boring, but to be honest this exercise my friend gave me has helped me so much with my comic world-building. These artifact pages each represent the aesthetics and artisan products of the three major settings in my comic.
The first is the misty realm of the owl monks (shepherds, wraiths, reapers etc. they’re called by many names) so my focus was on developing an aesthetic that was cozy, yet somewhat alien and mysterious. The unnatural green light is a large part of their identity, and the lanterns are an important plot point. The souls of the dead in my story manifest as fireflies, and the monks collect them in lanterns with the use of their long tendrils stretching out across the landscape.
The second set are objects from the kingdom of Althea, a temperate southern country that boasts thriving agriculture as well as rich coastal trade routes. They are very religiously diverse and preoccupied with the arts and sciences.
Finally, there's the kingdom of Vosland, which stretches into the far north. They have a traditionally militant history and have made most of their wealth through mining and conquest. There are many old religions spread across the country in pockets but recent years have seen a widespread movement toward atheism.

“Legendary artist Jim Starlin created this piece as promotional art for The Defenders title. It features the artist's pitch-perfect depictions of the original Defenders--Hulk, Doctor Strange and Sub-Mariner. Joining them is Starlin's character, the popular Pip the Troll, a member of Adam Warlock's gang in the original effort to defeat Thanos back in the 1970s. “
