i don't know what order to start Dissecting, so i'll just start with:

it's absolutely fascinating how the dynamic Wally & Barnaby had - to my knowledge - before the update, and a dynamic i'd seen speculated elsewhere and generally accepted, has been completed turned on its head

see, given that Wally is the "main character" and Barnaby is classified as "his best friend", i got the feeling that Barnaby kind of... tags along on Wally's 'shenanigans'. that he's the sidekick, the best friend. especially since their dynamic has been previously & briefly described as "Barnaby is very polite to Wally." he's the Companion.

but the audios sorta paint a reverse picture. in the Interview, when Barnaby enters stage right, he completely bowls over Wally's introduction and dominates the interview. when the interviewer asks how the two of them are handling the fame, even outright asking Wally, Barnaby doesn't hesitate to answer the question himself, and only about himself. Wally doesn't get another word in edge-wise until the interviewer explicitly singles Wally out.

(now, an argument could be made that Barnaby knew that Wally was somewhat overwhelmed with all of the questions, and tried to take the reins to give him a reprieve. but, considering that the interview seems to be very early on the possible timeline - like, very soon after Welcome Home debuted - i don't think this is likely. i doubt Barnaby and Wally would've had the time to solidify their dynamic or really get to know each other that well yet)

and Barnaby continues to take point in pretty much all of their other conversations, too. like in the mystery Howdy/Barnaby/Wally audio, their interaction gives off the vibes that Wally is Barnaby's sidekick, his tag-along.

(on a related tangent, it's fascinating how the website described the episodes as "[beginning] with Wally introducing the focus or theme for the day before coming across other characters who would join him on his escapades until the end of the day." but from pretty much everything we've seen so far, it seems like He's the one who's just along for the ride, bouncing from neighbor shenanigan to neighbor shenanigan instead of having his own adventures.

of course, if the 14 audios are present time, which is honestly somewhat likely, this could be because the show isn't running. they aren't doing episodes - they're just existing, doing their things. no need for Wally to take point in any way shape or form. tangent over)

in the 14 audios with Barnaby, he doesn't even acknowledge Wally until the very end - which, of course, could be because that's how the scenes are set up. except that in some of them, the characters do directly acknowledge Wally's presence outside of the endings. Eddie in 5-14, Howdy and Poppy in 1-14, and Frank in 4-14 (technically, since he was infodumping to Wally at the very start before Barnaby interrupted). you'd think that a guy would try to include his best friend a little more!

maybe i'm reading into it too much. & given what we know about Wally as a character, it would make sense for Barnaby to be the go-getter Main Guy of the two. but it really seems like its Barnaby & Wally instead of Wally & Barnaby. he's just kinda... there. going along with whatever Barnaby is up to.

but also, on the other side of things - & it's occurring to me as i type this, it's interesting how in a lot of audios, Barnaby seems to seek Wally out. in "Just So", he shows up to fetch Wally. in 4-14, Barnaby interrupts Frank and Wally's gardening session, almost as if he's stopping by to check on his little buddy. in 7-14, Barnaby calls Julie's house (presumably) searching for Wally, or at least checking in once again. something to consider in all of this!

i finished the xianzhou luofu arc (+ dhil's companion quest) like yesterday

I am awake! i am living! i am FERAL! This litle update has me absolutely SPINNING Firstly just allow me to say that everything is just oh so so CUTE The costumes, the sprites, the 19 minute long audio, the COOKBOOK my beloved!! But anyways, theory time!! Well more like observations, thoughts and unhinged ramblings XD Gonna put it Down Below:

Speaking of that. First observation is the wording of Down Below We usually talk about waving up high! It is said so many times!

But now we finally have our official "As Above, So Below" My first thought on this is the theme of a stage, "As above the stage, down below the stage" But I truly dont think we have enough information to make a connection quite yet We know where "Down Below" is I wonder where "As Above" is? The second thing is the Wally Darling costume And the Eyes

I realize now that the Eyes are actually just holes and showing whatever is underneath, BUT I still can't help thinking that this was intentional! Perhaps it's some sort of Code? Afterall, his eyes are Black!

Now to get into the MEAT here: Spoilers if you have not found the secret audio! during the secret audio "Listen" The bug found on the transcript

Wally stares directly at the "eddie" apple as he eats the apple on the plate (I also just wanted a screenshot of the "eyes" in the BG)

and now… now i have theories hang on cause it involves the entire transcript that was said but not said in the transcript itself! (In fact, it says this part is not there!! but it IS) so i typed it out by ear (also ayoo we have a narrator!!) (also there is a lot of 4th wall breaking and quite a few neighbors seem to know that there is a show/that they are puppets) (but anyways!) ok but here is what is said in the story It is because this town is rumored to have visitors at night… Something from deep within the forest, far beyond the hills and mountains… No one knows what it wants or where it’s going, just that it is persistent.. Just that it arrives here. So many stories have risen about their origins… But I know what it is searching for. it is looking for neighbors who have stayed up past the daytime, to gobble them up whole that is why so few live here it moves through the streets at night, but it doesnt break into Homes However, on rare instances, it will find itself with an appetite unsatisfied by its aimless wanderings even the occasional unfortunate insect that has crossed its path, is not enough those who have lived through the nights say, it isn't quiet about it either they always say you can hear when it gets closer to you do you know what sound it makes? I hear it, every night. you can hear it too, if you listen especially if you wait next to your window First, there's rustling in the bushes Then, the scratching on the pavement, and the walls.. as it crawls up Finally, if you're quiet.. You can hear it's guttural sound ok ok so there seems to be a theme going on here and the theme is Hunger And also when the audio gets all garbled and skipping? I feel like it is saying..."Frankly" over and over? I could be overthinking, but it is what i hear!! it almost feels like Wally.. can't control his hunger he was supposed to be watching Barnaby's apple Barnaby even says "Don’t worry though, kid, there’s plenty’a other eats here! What’re you feelin’ hungry for, Wally?" and he is quick to draw attention away from wally, as he tends to do a LOT barnaby seems to Know a LOT about Wally, and thats why he sort of has to be his babysitter? I think that there could be a connection here I think Wally was HUNGRY, he was absolutely STARVING OR OR Maybe something else was Hungry? Home?? Whatever the black goo/mold is?? If something is controling Wally? His eyes are black, the Goo is black, the goo is coming from Home But also also [It sounds like Barnaby pats the camera.] Going back to my theory of wally being the camera/ the audience surrogate/his eyes are cameras This is fuel to my fire!! Oh and also the Wally Costume add to the motif of You being able to see through Wally's eyes. Of You and Wally being connected through his Eyes!! But at the end of the day, I think this update revolves around Eddie! This little bug on the rock is Purple! Which we know is Eddie's Color!

And just that that doodle looks like the bug that leads to the secret Audio where Eddie's apple is brought to the screen.. Leads me to feel like something forboding is going on for our poor, dear sweet Mailman! Which by the way, just another little Observation But Sally doesnt seem enthused by the fact that Eddie is a fellow Arts lover? and she just calls him "Mailman" rather than an affectionate longname like she does with everybody else But it does feel like Eddie is the Type to give his heart and soul to everyone, the shirt from his back, only for him to get left in the dirt u_u I'm noticing a trend of him being the neighborhood punching bag Eddie IS the mailman tho! So it only makes sense that he is the one delivering the letters to the WHRP. He is not the one writing them, he's just the delivery guy! But I think he could be being sent out at night When everyone else is asleep And I think something terrible may happen to him It's very dangerous to go out at night and This could be where Eddie is ripped in half/mangled Wally fixes him of course! (old theory but it does reference that) So is Wally just using Eddie to serve whatever purpose he is after? Eddie is a very compliant guy, he would do anything for anyone and if he can be put back together, where is the harm? I am starting to make connections! Stringing together the pieces! And once again, i'm getting the question of "Is Wally Evil?" And once again, I am answering with a solid "No" Do I think that he could be slightly morally askew? With the themes of "I must do what I need to do, no matter what happens" "I'm sorry, but this is how it must be" "The ends justifies the means" Possibly, maybe. Especially if it is to save his Neighbors, his World, his Home. Or, Just some of his actions are not his, he is a puppet afterall. Anyways anyways, this has been a very very long and rambly tangent. Hopefully there can be some sense made from this, I know that I can be a bit jumpy with my thoughts!! But these are my inputs for now!! Feel free to add on/correct me! Still posting these because the secret invisible transcripts under the audio tapes aren’t 100% accurate, and I like things to be exact. I may be motivated to post more of these if I spent less time doing them up nice. I’d also be WAY more motivated if I could find that special specific American typewriter font with the rounded Tuscan serifs used in the real WH script pieced together on that secret page. I’m beginning to suspect that’s a CUSTOM font.

Yes I know the last one I posted was audio tape #2, I’ve got #3 written out but not done up/aged, but I had this one finished and if I didn’t post it now it would be harder for me to get to it later.

FRANK

“Blue, don't actually have any blue pigmentation. They have to grow in soil that is basic as well, so the pine straw should be left for the other beds-“

BARNABY B. BEAGLE, LARGE, BLUE, STAND-UP COMEDIAN CANINE (WHO GETS AROUND A LOT FOR A SUPPOSED LAY ABOUT), INTERRUPTS FRANK AS HE STROLLS UP THE PATH TO FRANKS FRONT GARDEN.

BARNABY

“You're tellin' me that these flowers are liars, Franky?”

FRANK

(Exasperated sigh as he notices Barnaby approaching.)

“Urgh, I'm not telling you that these flowers are liars, Barnaby. I'm talking about how these flowers are specially selected to look this way.”

(Subtle standup tone.)

“Oh, don't you worry, Frank. The last thing I'll do is overwhelm your orchid. Your plants all seem clover it.”

FRANK

(Annoyed groan before taking a deep breath.)

“Uuurrggggh. Not with these puns again. You're going to make all of my hard work wilt! Your humor is too dry for my impatiens.”

BARNABY

“Hey, hey! Not a daisy goes by where you don't get impatient... but hey, I'm just pollen your leg.”

FRANK

wondering about Frank and insects but specifically about how it looks like the WH insects are highly stylized, so does Frank even know anything about real butteflies/insects?

& if he saw a real one, would he recognize it? are all of the species names he applies to the WH bugs real, or are they all made up like "Vibrant Eyespot" or "Fluttering Heartwing"?

and then there's the question - does the neighborhood have some of the more 'undesirable' bugs like moths, worms, roaches, spiders? does it have bugs outside of the generic groups of beetles and butterflies? like are there mantids? leafbugs? dragonflies? weevils? or are those too specific/complex/not-cute for the Playfellow Workshop to have included?

and then there's the question of what are the bugs? props? puppets? are they alive or do the neighbors just perceive them as such? Do they even exist outside of art, storybooks, and animated segments? I highly doubt they're alive like the neighbors are, since in the gif of Frank's head spinning, the framed butterflies' wings are moving. which is kind of horrifying if you think about it for more than a second.

just... the critters Frank loves so so so much being a complete fabrication... every piece of knowledge he prides himself on / delights in knowing being utterly Untrue... oof

I sure can!! knowing me I'll probably end up writing a long fic instead of a small imagine, but I just wanted to share my stream of consciousness/headcanons for a work husband!wonwoo fic:

it takes place during a corporate retreat

wonwoo's not really your work husband. both of you are only friends so it's platonic. it's not exactly like established work husband but more of the two of you have the closest relationship with each other.

i'm still thinking of jobs but I'm leaning more towards something in the publishing industry? maybe the two of you are cover artists or talent scouts for the company.

you've been gone for a few days because of a work trip so you'll be going to the retreat on your own

wonwoo's new intern somehow makes a mistake but is too scared of him to tell him so wonwoo oversleeps and misses all of the carpool cars by the time he arrives at the office. but nobody contacts him bc they're too scared of him bc he looks scary. you're the only one who's friendly with him so they contact you and you're like oh I can pick him up

but then you run into some sort of problem that makes the two of you stranded in the middle of nowhere

but surprise (or no surprise bc I love writing cliches) there's a place for the two of you to stay during the night

throwing in another cliche right here -> forced proximity trope. maybe it's some wacky cabin where it's couples only or there are only rooms with single beds left.

maybe we'll go with the wacky cabin so the two of you fake being married (so literally "work" "husband") or that you're going to elope but somehow found the cabin

the owners are like aww we're licensed we can literally marry you on the spot bc the two of you are eloping either way. for owner personalities i'm thinking very linda belcher-esque especially during the airbnb episode.

and you're like ahaha we have a specific spot we want to elope at tysm but they make you two prove your love through some games and activities with them

it's p awkward at first bc the two of you just wanna work in your rooms bc corporate job many things to do!! but the two of you are pulled into the activities and it's kind of awkward at first, but the two of you end up liking doing them together.

i'm thinking couple's yoga. i'm thinking couple's diy. i'm thinking couple's painting classes. (this sounds cute and all but I just wanna know how much the owners are making bc these activities sound expensive. maybe it'll be like some famous chain couple's resort at this point but the two of you have never heard of it. idk!!)

maybe you're doing a scavenger hunt and you get hurt or something (another cliche) (but it's ok wonwoo deserves all of the cliches) so he carries you back.

maybe the owners were like no we don't believe you're in love the whole time and when they see wonwoo taking care of you they're like ok they're in love they can stay.

you don't know what overcomes you but you kiss him on the cheek to tell him thanks and he's grinning. a blushing mess. he's so cute.

maybe at night the two of you go stargazing bc you're city folk so you don't get to see stars at night bc of light pollution. he's actually able to see where the two of you are and he's shook bc he can literally see the retreat location from where he's at oopsie. there's a part of him that wants to stay here with you so he struggles to decide whether or not he should tell you because he wants to spend more time with you.

but he tells you bc we like writing green flags here ok. but you tell him that your ankle hurts a lot wink wink and that you can't even drive wink wink and he's like wow guess we have to stay here instead of walking a few minutes to our retreat site wink wink oh the pain guess we can't go to the retreat that both of us so desperately want to attend wink wink

my mind blanked at this point but I'm putting this in the imagines tags just to throw it out there. if anybody is interested, I will turn this into a full fic.

ok ok So Theory time! I'm still very much on the "stay on script" Theory. Which is in short, if the characters start acting off-script, they tend to get hurt! Example: Eddie went out late at night and got himself quite hurt indeed! Good thing Wally was there to fix him up and give him a Watch so that his neighbor wouldn't forget the time! (Link leads to an older theory of my ramblings) ((also I think it will be funny to mention how he was left on the ground in the storybook audio, just for future reference)) And now the Frank picture has been made cannon!:

I think this explains why Frank is a bit cold to Eddie! Everyone knows that they are lovers, but they are not scripted to be.... I think a few nights in a box with chopped up parts of yourself, plus a copy of the script, is enough to make a statement!!! The statement being: "Behave and follow this, or else" So he definitely doesn't want to be caught being off script again For his sake, and mostly likely For Eddie as well. (I believe the red rectangle to be the script, wait for the GIF to stop)

And honestly these are things that were already swimming around in my brain, But now an Addition! It's Julie! There is quite a bit about Julie and scripts and how she does NOT like to stick to them! or rules! If it means having fun, then rules are to be broken! There is a whole audio about her not staying on script.

And where does that get her? Off a cliff! In this older picture, Julie can be seen on the edge of a cliff:

and in this audio, it makes mention of falling down, down,down (Thank you so much op for that audio) So now it seems like we have 3 neighbors who have been punished in some sort of way. Tho i'm not entirely sure if Julie was forced or manipulated into jumping. Actually make that 4: Barnaby... This is an older one, possibly one of the first! The art where our good friend Barn lost his head! (You all know the one) Now I had no connections of why in particular, but one of the audios from the update, leads me to believe he is a Liar of some sorts I Have a few other loose thoughts, but i think that there are MANY strings going on at the same time And I want to keep them Separated. So for this one, I will Pin it down as simply "Going off script" I have a few other thoughts and theories, But I will have separate posts for them This post in particular will serve as my observations of the neighbors getting "Punished" for "going off script" If i find any more, i'll prob reblog this with added details
