Royals/Ramblers is DONE. I split the difference and made two epilogues from the five, and one of them just looks like it's part of another chapter. I am devious in my ways.
I'm letting it marinate for the rest of the day; I'll give it a quick pass tomorrow, then let go of it for a few days so when I come back I'll be ready for slightly deeper editing. Aiming to post it perhaps October or November, we'll see how life goes.
It meant I could finalize a lot of dates in the timeline that I've been building. I've had to shift some things around, so now the trick is to figure out timing for the stories now in the pipeline, based on my notes. There's ten, more or less, and whether I end up writing them all is dubious; it reminds me of plotting out Laocoon's Children, an extremely ambitious task, but unlike Laocoon's Children, I control the canon and I don't have to deal with anyone's stupidity but my own. And I'm really only focused on five of the ten right now. Which, given I wrote four of these books in fifteen months, plus three books' worth (Royals/Ramblers) for a total of "seven" books in less than two years....I guess we'll find out. Might take a break at some point to write something more literary, that's up to the ADHD I think.
Anyway, it's not necessarily the order in which I'd like to write the stories, but I've been holding off on some of these for a year already, they'll keep. I think the slate coming up is:
2023 Autumn - The Football Novel, which is already 2/3 written; it will run through spring 2024.
2024 Spring - The Chicken Salad Wars, Simon's novel, pushed out from this year to next; it has to end in August, because of Plot.
2024 Autumn - The Roman Ruin story, aka Classics Nerds In Love; this has to come relatively soon because it's prior to Jerry finalizing the dissolution of his estate. There's no set ending for this one, but it will likely need to cover at least until late spring 2025.
2025 Spring - The Let's Legalize Psychedelic Davzda story. Not ideal to push this one so far, but it's possible when I get there I could swap it with the Roman Ruin story, though that could make certain plotlines awkward.
2025 Summer - Ofelia's story, which culminates in Galian elections in early fall.
Fortunately most of them should be less work and words than Royals/Ramblers, which is a bit of a sweeping familial epic. Those five are all more-or-less unrelated to the royals directly.
The rest of them are either barely conceptions or can be set at any time (like the Quaker Whaler novel that happens in the past anyway). Which is kind of nice; I now have both a specific agenda for the immediate future and resources that I can build out once I get closer to the end of that agenda.
Phew. What a ride, and I'm still in the middle of it.
(I'd post a bit of story from Royals/Ramblers but for the last 4-5 chapters it's all spoilery.)

Tumblr media
you haven't been here for long but you can feel yourself molding to this new form. your mentality is a little less human as the day goes by.
it's been very odd knowing that you're a demon now. you can suddenly understand how to summon beings with ease, read curses, read blessings, and it's just a fraction of what this body seemed capable of.
it was stressful. living your life as a human and suddenly having to be something you're not. you're the "attendant" of the brothers but in another timeline, you're their human roommate that they cherish the most.
they're not really mean in this timeline, which is nice but they are slowing succumbing to the respective sins. and they have to deal with finally accepting that they're no longer angels.
and once again you have to play unpaid therapist while you have your own struggles to deal with.
you can feel yourself slipping away. your head in a constant ache as you think about the past the brothers had to deal with, the way you need to come back, the way you need to regain the trust of the brothers, and the way you need to keep this "attendant" persona of yours until there's a way back to the present.
so here you are sitting in the kitchen, elbows resting on the table and your hand pressed on your temples. it's the dead of night, the world is quiet. it's some of the few bits of silence you needed.
your body aches, your breath is heavy while your head rests on the counter. everything feels dizzy. you can't think right.
"mc? are you asleep?" beel's voice rings gently in your ears. he's gentle as his hand rests on your shoulder. "you shouldn't sleep here, it's not very healthy to sleep sitting like that..." his voice is laced with concern, moving your arms to help him get a better look at you.
but you're adamant and very dizzy still. your body jerks, tugging your arm away from his hold. you can't help but cough, you feel like throwing up as if you were too drunk. but nothing comes out thankfully. "are you okay?" he's moving to the other side where your head is facing away from him. he carefully kneels down to face you properly to check if you were going pale. "i don't want to leave you out here if you're not okay."
you take in a breath only to cough, your body shaking. "not..." you try to speak but fail and shake your head gently to answer his question.
"is it okay if i carry you? i'll take care of you." his stomach is growling but he's too focused on you to care. you swallow your choking feeling back and nod softly. beel is more than extremely careful while he guides your arms to wrap around his neck. he doesn't make any sudden movements to worsen your dizziness. "have you been taking care of yourself?" his voice is softer than usual, laced with concern and curiosity. he hasn't been in devildom for long so he's just as lost as you are on demons and how they deal with illnesses.
you don't answer, head still spinning as you rest your head on his shoulder. your silence speaks volumes to him. he doesn't say anything. you eventually reach the shared bedroom of beel and belphie. it felt like forever to get there with how the world felt like it was spinning faster to you. everything felt too fast yet too slow.
"i'm sorry i can't do much." he frowned. he placed you down on the bed, covering you with a blanket. "but i will help you if you need it. i like you when you're caring for yourself and happy, mc." your heart warms at beel's whisper of a declaration.
no matter the timeline, beel seems to care for you all the same.
"thank you."

i’m about a month late to the ffvii rebirth fanfare but i saw your study/shot comparison for the ending while scrolling through some tags and was really curious to see if you had come up with any more conclusions since then! i just finished it a couple days ago and still reeling from it and have been enjoying hearing people’s thoughts about what the heck they think is going on. obvs cloud is not ok, but i’m still trying to decide just how much of what we’re seeing is due to his sanity going out the window and how much of it (if any) is aerith actually speaking to him and/or sephiroth messing with him. the way he tells the rest of the party to not look up at the sky though and none of them see what he sees, just clues them all in to the fact that he isn’t entirely all there anymore. a collective very concerned side-eye lol. somebody help him pls.
!!! oh friend, you're in a TON of luck: I actually started a few different commentaries on how I saw the ending on this weeks back, but didn't post them because I got distracted by other fandoms? I'm more than happy to share them though—not as developed as they could be, but some congealing of where my mind went upon finishing the game and rewatching the gameplay.
forewarning: FFVII ending spoilers + a long af post lmao
So I wrote this on my twitter (where I go to see things only on twt lol) the other day because of a bunch of concepts were clarified by the Ultimania + translators, which kinda sums up where my thoughts are:
Tumblr media
Which...yeah. As I see it: as of the ending, Aerith is in fact dead in our current world (the one of the player narrative). How I see it, she's died in our primary timeline—though likely "alive" in the same way Zack is in some other timeline, in addition to her connection to every "universe" through the power of her connection to the planet as the last Cetra.
The white whispers (which represent Aerith/the will of the planet) as well as the “confluence of world” colors we see with Sephiroth are all around when Cloud supposedly “sees her alive" during the classic death scene—
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
—an indicator that the event itself was the "confluence" Sephiroth was trying to achieve, with Cloud experiencing several versions of it due to his own connection to Sephiroth/the lifestream/his fragmented mind. We see this both in what Sephiroth says around the event itself....and also the contrasting experiences of our party with what Cloud sees in the moment (+ through end of the game).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I see it, Cloud’s consciousness by the end of FFVII:R-II is fully fractured; throughout both Remake & Rebirth he is already seeing visions affected by Sephiroth’s influence on the planet (the black whispers, the way hooded men and thin air turn into Sephiroth before his eyes)—and now, during the “confluence of emotions / worlds / reunion” mentioned (Aerith's death), Cloud’s already broken mind is slipping further into seeing “the middle space” of the worlds joined and prepared for destruction by Sephiroth in real time, rather than following the timeline of events in the world we play—a la the post that inspired your ask. :)
All that said: the reason he’s seeing Aerith (not just sensing her the way Red does in his own Lifestream connection) is because she’s a Cetra, and now (in death) the embodiment of the positive! Will of Gaia across worlds—so because of Cloud's connection to that "middle space" / ability to traverse different versions of reality because of his connection to Sephiroth, Cloud is interacting with her presence…despite it not being there for anyone else.
Tumblr media
It’s also why he can see the sky split no one else can.
Tumblr media
ADDITIONALLY:
The Aerith we see fight alongside Cloud in the final battle and the one we see walking around everyone as Cid fixes the plane…that’s the spirit of her person (think the Aerith of Advent Children). Aerith didn’t live this game—her spirit can communicate because of Sephiroth's successful confluence, though she’s ALSO "alive" in the same way Zack and Biggs are to us: aka she died in the world she was in but still exists in others, which Sephiroth confirms/explains both when Aerith pulls Cloud into another “doomed” world—
Tumblr media Tumblr media
when he’s trying to manipulate Cloud in the Lifestream—
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and when you’re fighting Sephiroth alongside Aerith in the void during the final battle (after she’s died).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even so, Aerith “living on” as the last Cetra/the spirit of the planet + someone with access to multiple worlds through the "reunion" means she’s now as able to infiltrate Cloud's ongoing visions as Sephiroth is...and is likely trying to keep him even somewhat present despite his clearly fractured mind.
I think that’s implied repeatedly by through the hollow Holy Materia (implying both Aerith is no longer “there,” but still present + that cloud himself is now hollow)—
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
—and why/how the Black Materia (Sephiroth) is still manipulating him and very much driving his fractured thoughts, visions and actions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the rest of the party: it's because no one but his “vessel-connected-to-Sephiroth” self (+ now dead-but-living-on-in-the-Lifestream Aerith) has any idea what he learned about worlds in the Lifestream that what’s happening to Cloud is lost on everyone (and why they look painfully concerned), and also why spirit!Aerith repeatedly gives him reminders to 1) not listen to Sephiroth and 2) focus on finding himself again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All that said: because Cloud’s actual self is already slipping away from our present game TL by the second half of the game, it will have to be retrieved and rearranged—which we know will happen in game 3 (assuming you know the original FF7 plot where Tifa rearranges him in the Lifesteam) but that has to be changed from “Cloud finds out about Zack and finally cracks" because Cloud already knows about Zack in some capacity by the middle of Rebirth.
I personally think this sets us up for a really interesting resolution in that Tifa is going to probably have spirit!Aerith’s help putting Cloud back together in the Lifestream in game 3—and that she will likely play a bigger part in helping Cloud “find himself” in his own world again because it’s been made more apparent that she’s a full consciousness in the Lifestream/able to affect multiple worlds now because of Sephiroth completing the first step in his plan. That's more just hopeful on my part going into the next game than something rooted in analysis though.
But yes! those are my thoughts! I hope this gives you (more than a little) something. Feel free to ask if something isn’t clear though lol this was like 4 different half-done drafts combined 😂 Regardless, ty so much for the ask / giving me a reason to post them!

DOCTOR WHO TOP 10 - 3rd Doctor
The lists continue. Yes, I'm obsessed with making lists.
10. Terror of the Autons
Tumblr media
Thoroughly iconic. What else can I say?
9. The Mind of Evil
Tumblr media
I dunno why this one in particular. I haven't seen it for quite a few years but for some reason, I just find the concept really interesting and gravite to this serial.
8. The Glen of Sleeping
Tumblr media
I should read more of the TV Action/Countdown stuff, because this was genuinely fun. The first comic strip featuring the Master, if I'm not mistaken. And it's really good.
7. The Ambassadors of Death
Tumblr media
A really cool take on the first contact story. The best serial of S7. And the last David Whitaker story.
6. The Curse of Peladon
Tumblr media
I feel like this is the point where Pertwee's Doctor Who starts actually resembling Doctor Who... But this time cooler! And with political intrigue! Definitely the best serial Brian Hayles wrote.
5. The Time Warrior
Tumblr media
Another admission time: I'm a huge fan of Sontarans. I love them to bits. This is their best outing in all of classic Who. It's also really fun and introduces Sarah Jane. Easy top 5.
4. The Daemons
Tumblr media
Just a really great finale to the Master season. I love it. The tension between magic and science, the folk horror influences... Yeah, this one is amazing.
3. Planet of the Spiders
Tumblr media
The big finale for the 3rd Doctor. The nine-year-old child inside me is jumping up and down even just thinking about this one - paranormal powers, huge spiders, the Doctor as the buddhist hero... I love this shit. And it helps that it's the perfect finale to this era of Who.
2. The Three Doctors
Tumblr media
Two is my fave. There is no timeline in which this isn't the top TV story of this era. But my number 1 overall isn't a TV story...
1. The Heralds of Destruction
Tumblr media
Yeah. My favourite 3rd Doctor story by far is a comic book.
I genuinely believe that The Heralds of Destruction is increadibly good. But it not just that. It's also the fact that it kinda out-Pertwees the Pertwee era? It takes a look at the most glam bits of Pertwee era and turns them up to 11. And honestly? It's just a blast to read. Cornell is the god of Doctor Who fanfic and this is what all eu stuff should aspire to be - in conversation with the era it slots into, while also just an amazing bit of Who on its own.

oh my GOD i deleted my rant by accident im gonna cry lemme try to remember what i wrote but tl;dr not really a theory but me trying to arrange my understanding of albrecht and tmitw
i title this: wallbrecht is everything everywhere all at once
also i wrote this at 5-6am and didnt sleep so shit's probably messy
Tumblr media
ok so a major theme in warframe that recurrs in warframe is the loss of identity or sense of self. natah/lotus/margulis, erra becoming pazuul, teshin being controlled by the worm queens, the operator dissociating and believing they're our warframe, then the operator losing themselves to the worm queen and the operator (+rell) confusing ourselves with tmitw himself , the drifter in duviri, warframes themselves losing their sense of self (umbra at some point, and potentially arthur and aoi down the line), albrecht worrying who really left the void dimension, the remaining entrati family themselves!. we're also told many times that the void gives but it also takes, and that it's heavily influenced by strong emotions
in cosmic horror stories usually the horror is a representation of something else. in lovecraft's works it's often his disgust with people of colour, viewing them as something completely alien. in bloodborne part of it is the fears of pregnancy and dealing with offspring. i haven't played darkest dungeon but i've heard that it's about trauma and how the overwhelming traumatic events become too much to bear that people go mad. in the lighthouse, part of the horror is that people will fight and kill just to know the truth, or what they believe to be salvation
so i think albrecht's horror was his fear of losing his identity. we knew from the clock's archives that his experiments hadn't been going well prior to the bell incident. he was losing respect as an archimedian, maybe he lost respect as a father and husband too. i think a lot of us theorise already that albrecht IS the man in the wall, not a doppelganger like tmitw literally was with the operator. but tmitw being omnipresent means that they can freely simultaneously be and not be other people, the paradox of eternalism. albrecht is now the void, he knows every timeline and every outcome and potentially every person (except operator/drifter because they're already void in multiple senses of the word) but he is also still one human. the human mind can't reconcile knowing everything, that's just madness. lucky that kids aren't as self aware as adults!
the void isn't evil nor good. it gives and takes merely because that's the way the universe works, very vaguely dare i say the law of conservation in (a very sci-fi way) action. the void is in the grand scheme of things is just a natural phenomenon of the universe. but the overwhelming emotion present during the 10-0 accident (if that even was an accident) and albrecht's own experiment just happened to be fear, so the void literally embodied the concept of fear and became a person, vecause that's just what the void does. it became an unknowable being behind a veil just beyond our perceptive reality that understands the plights of humanity a little too well. it could have manifested into something friendly and offered us and albrecht a deal in a polite way if the circumstances were right but it wasn't. tmitw is a manifestation of the void so whether the man - albrecht - wanted to or not, he had to approach our operator in their greatest moment of fear. what he did have a choice in, though, was to offer a deal. and what better way to secure a time loop, multiple ones even, that will guarantee your becoming wally than to be a time-space hopping entity who can exploit a bunch of scared kids who didn't know any better.
i don't know what we'll be using the vessel for but i don't think we'll be using it to fight a giant wall (and if we are it won't be the climactic final fight). i don't think we'll ever overcome the void, and we don't need to. the void just is. but the man in the wall literally is just a man. and i know people dunk on bad cosmic horror when the spooky thing is actually just a person or has sympathetic motivations but i think here warframe may be able to pull it off well. it's a cosmic horror that's made life miserable over multiple lifetimes, but the horror simultaneously is just a victim partially of his own doing because the cosmic horror never was alien, it's just a person who's scared of losing himself, just like the lotus was and just like our operator was. the cosmic horror IS the person in the stories who faced the horrors, who faced themselves in the seriglass bell - all it took to differentiate us and albrecht was an *accident* (though at this point it was probably intentional)
we need to confront albrecht/the man in the wall and try to stop his madness. but like many cosmic horror stories go, i think he's trapped no matter what. he'll either overcome his fear of losing himself and become one with the void, leaving us for good, or he'll try to return to gomaitru. but the fact that he's not the same as he was before and neither is gomaitru, with what he's seen and experienced as tmitw will be so maddening that he'll have to leave for the void once again in a suicide mission if he still can't reconcile with *what he is* now. in true cosmic horror fashion we will probably never fully know his motivations till the end, being a greater being than our scope of thinking - and with eternalism in place, maybe albrecht reconciling with himself was what already happened back in the seriglass bell

In which Rex officially, actually, definitely died in Saleucami, Cody is not a necromancer (no, really), Obi-Wan is a very, very good Private Investigator, Ahsoka is absolutely not his assistant, and Wolffe is just your average Irish Wolfhound.
Written for the @codex-week 2024 Day 1 prompt: Secrets, Whispers and Rumours!
So, confession: I actually wrote this for Codex Week 2023 (for the 'White is for Witching' alt. image prompt), however didn't finish it time, and put it on the back-burner to chip away at whenever the mood struck, intending to post it once I felt I was done with it. One year later, and I figured the concept fit nicely into Secrets, Whispers and Rumours, so I put a bit of a spurt on and finally got it to that sweet spot of 'eh, this will do'.
No worries if you've not seen Pushing Daisies (though do yourself a favour and immerse yourself in that ridiculous, wonderful little world), and if you have seen it, please forgive my poor attempts to imitate some of its more signature styles and motifs. I suppose they're more 'honourary nods' to the original, as it didn't feel right to do a PD AU without them!
The vignettes are not really in any sort of chronological order, so don't worry about timelines or event sequences - you can just consider each one in the moment. Hope you enjoy!

Hey there! Since Thranduil's children were all born with decades or even centuries between them, how did that affect their relationships with one another growing up? From a mortal perspective, it seems wild that your much MUCH younger sibling will effectively "catch up" with you both in terms of physical appearance and maturity before too long. Was that a good or bad thing for the king and queen? Were they happy to be parents to an infant again after so long, or each time were they going "oh god I forgot how stressful this was 50 years ago, never again"
Also, does their age impact the princes' standing socially or within the royal family? What about in society in general- for mortals, I can see people being drawn to the eldest the most since they stand to inherit more, but for elves I'm not sure how much that preference might change.
(I'm sorry I just asked you fifty questions in a row- if you've already answered some of them in other posts, feel free to ignore them! Your timeline just got me thinking)
These all ALL excellent points and questions! :) I'll be honest; the (relatively) large age differences between the Thranduilions is not something I thought TOO hard about. I definitely knew that Mirion was going to be a wartime baby (just like his mother), but the rest of them were kind of just random choices I made YEARS ago, when I wrote my first SotWK AU fanfic (Greenleaf's Day Out).
However, I think the big gaps between their children is very much consistent with the theme of Thranduil and Maereth's life together: endurance and patience in waiting. Thranduil waited 1,500 years from when he first professed his love to Maereth to finally obtaining her sweet "yes" to his marriage proposal. He knew she was worth the investment of his time because they were destined for a long life together. There was no rush for anything.
I believe Thranduil and Maereth actually preferred the large gaps between each child because it gave them time to focus on raising and educating each one. This allowed each son to develop his own distinct identity, personality, and interests. Both Thranduil and Maereth enjoyed their roles as parents very much, even during the infant stage!
The other advantage of the age gap is that the older brothers were able to serve as teachers and mentors to the younger ones. This is why, for example, Legolas is arguably the most multi-talented of the princes. As a child he was able to learn from each one of his brothers, and picked up a broad arsenal of skills and knowledge.
When Legolas reached adulthood, the age differences became almost irrelevant, and the princes "leveled out" to become extremely close and tightly bonded with each other.
Furthermore, even though the princes could not grow up alongside their brothers due to the age gap, they were able to grow up alongside elflings exactly their own age (see: the concept of birth-mates in the SotWK AU). The Silvans of the Woodland Realm were the most fertile group of Elves in Middle-earth, and were culturally very family-oriented. They believed the true wealth of their kingdom is its people, and so marriages and children are far more commonplace for them than for their western-dwelling kin. The birth of every child was celebrated as a great event, and the raising of children viewed as a community effort.
Does age or birth order affect the social standing of the princes? Yes and No. It matters only for Mirion, the first-born and heir to the throne. Thranduil was determined to make clear the matter of succession, to avoid even potential strife among the siblings. He bestowed on Mirion the title of "Caun-i-Conin" (Prince of Princes), which gives him authority over his four younger brothers and a duty to ensure their protection and well-being.
Otherwise, the other four princes are seen as all being on equal social standing, even though they carry different roles in the king's government.
I hope I addressed all of your questions sufficiently. Thank you so much for the Ask, and please feel free to send more anytime! <3

Y'know what? I've been thinking about this concept for a while, and I'd like to hear your thoughts.
So, technically, the world Lily Veselka comes from has ended. It's classified as an end of human conscious scenario (I forgot the specific terminology for it, lol), so.. hypothetically, it would be possible for Jacqueline to end up there at some point? Yes? No?
I think it would be a very interesting concept if Iris and Jackie got into a fight on an op and soon after Jacqueline ends up dying, or maybe Jacqueline was just thinking a lot about Iris on one of her testing excursion days, and ended up in the 3002 timeline.
Something, something, the relationship between the end of the world and the singular person left to wander it is very yuri
Alright so I already wrote this all out and accidentally deleted the draft so this response my be more concise than what I initially wrote down.
This is actually something I’ve thought about before, and it is certainly possible, likely, even. That said, I don’t think I’ll include it in Devil’s Advocate, as fun as it would be, as fitting it into the storyline in a way that doesn’t feel like a detour would be difficult.
I feel a little bad talking about Lily when I've only included her in Voices Carry, so she's not the most well-defined to my readers. That said, assuming Lily 'wins' at the end of SCP-3002 (which I do), she's probably realized that it's difficult to find a good conversation partner when you can read and influence the minds of just about anyone. Lily would be a little desperate to find someone, anyone, she can have a real interpersonal interaction with. She's desperate to find some way to validate her own identify and existence, and aside from that, keeping the world running in perfect harmony would just be so boring after a while.
Jackie, on the other hand, might let her curiosity get the better of her when it comes to Lily. She is a bit of a nerd, after all you don't get into her situation by putting science after your other priorities, and how many times do you get to have a conversation with the apocalypse? Lily can be downright personable, if more than a little vindictive. Besides that, it would probably be a good idea to humor her to at least get some good information. Also Jackie why were you spending your final moments thinking about another woman
In the sense of each parties having a fascination with each other, one in order to validate herself and the other being more like unsatiable curiosity, I can see that being yuri. I'd imagine Lily is also somewhat on the possessive side (no pun intended) with things she wants, as she's not used to not getting her way. If you were looking for drama here, that is.

7, 24, 32 for the writer ask!
writing asks!!!
annoyingly i filled most of this out and then tumblr ate my answers SO take two!
What is your deepest joy about writing?
so this isn’t joy, per se, but i had a conversation with @lost-decade recently where i mentioned that i think a lot of my attraction to writing comes from the fact that i am, at heart, a horrible little control freak (positively unheard of in kink community etc etc) and thus it is very satisfying to me on a deep lizard brain level to put characters in situations and then make those situations conform to my wishes. my writing output always goes up dramatically when i am feeling overwhelmed or uncertain in life and i think this is a big part of it.
but also, i am a person who gets obsessed with things! i am all or nothing! i get obsessed with people (or rather their public personas, fourth wall and all that) and media and scenarios and kinks and tiny little details and big philosophical concepts. writing lets me poke at all those things. picture me like gollum holding a snow globe, shaking it up over and over again to watch how the flakes fall.
24. How much prep work do you put into your stories? What does that look like for you? Do you enjoy this part or do you just want to get on with it?
i’ll talk about fic first as that’s what people on here know me for writing-wise. the answer here is: it depends! for my slutty little one-shots i tend to do very little research; stuff like crosstown traffic or a lot like life are largely unplanned or inspired by one real-life event that sparks an idea (although i guess you could say i researched the njoy plug in a lot like life in the sense that i own one lmao).
with longer fics, particularly RPF, i LOVE fitting my fic timelines into real-life events. this is particularly satisfying with motorsport RPF because the races give the year a very particular and easy-to-research structure. so for longer fics like there was always warmth between us i watched a ton of youtube videos and clips of max and daniel for both timeline inspiration and characterisation (although honestly i read that fic back the other day and my dialogue for them is so generic at times gjrskjfs), plus i wrote it relatively soon after the season itself.
with the toto/christian sequel to all the blood runs hot before it’s cold i’m working on, i wrote myself some notes of what themes i want to explore, plus a timeline of last season so that i could tie those themes into the arc of the season, like so:
Tumblr media
i probably won’t use all those notes in the final piece, but it gives me a structure to work from.
for original writing, again it depends. for short stories and poetry i tend to free write for a bit beforehand until something appears from the ether that i can use as a starting point. for my novel-in-progress, when i wrote the first draft i basically did…maybe a page of planning? this was a bad idea. it was a mess. i resisted planning for ages but eventually i had to admit that for long-form pieces i cannot adequately structure my writing without one. so i went back and wrote a very elaborate plan using the six-arc story structure, which allows for much more freedom than a traditional ‘save the cat’ style beat sheet. highly recommend. i try not to do too much research beforehand (which is hard given i’m writing a novel about AI, something i have very little practical knowledge of!) because i just get bogged down and end up procrastinating.
jeez, that was an essay.
32. What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you?
oh lol there are SO MANY. i have a few of them tattooed on me. let me answer all three of those with the first example that comes to mind:
for poem, ‘turning and turning in the widening gyre / the falcon cannot hear the falconer’ from the second coming by wb yeats haunts me. the whole poem haunts me, actually, for reasons that should be obvious upon reading. but those lines utterly terrify me.
for novel, again there’s hundreds but the one that first came to mind was ‘you can always count on a murderer for a fancy prose style’ from lolita by vladimir nabokov. lolita is one of the books i’ve re-read the most because it is a complete masterpiece, and this line embodies that to me. it’s clever, it’s funny, it’s defensive, it slides in a fantastically important plot point in the shape of a joke. amazing.
from fic, this is maybe a random example but the first one i thought of was this line from darkest little paradise (F1, pierre/charles) by heroics: 'Charles clutches him for another moment, squeezes the back of Pierre’s neck, resists the urge to drop to his knees right here and let Pierre do whatever he wants with Charles’s soft body.' i don’t know what it is about it, something about ‘soft body’. it’s just a line that has really stuck with me as a beautiful example of a dynamic (both in the relationship sense and, a bit, in the kink sense) described with such restraint.
eta: fuck at risk of making this post even more unnecessarily long i just realised i would be utterly remiss not to mention ‘She wants to know where this moral fortitude was when he had her flat on her back in that dark little cottage. Wonders if he had to fuck her to find it. If she has to always be the one to pay for it.’ from @widespindriftgaze’s astonishing taskmaster RPF masterpiece broke both early and late (part 2 in a series), which i have never managed to read without crying.
thank you for asking! ❤️
from this writing asks post. i love shit like this (as you can see from how fuckin long this got); please feel free to ask more if you're reading this!

Fuck it, let’s do another one.
So my world is pretty much a random variety of multiple things I like crammed into one. For example, one area is a technologically advanced super city that I hope to talk about later while the other is an abandoned hospital in the middle of a frozen mountain. Another is the depths of Hell turned into a 9-5 punishment in contrast to a fungal rave happening in the middle of a forest that has giant crystals that show different possible timelines. Essentially no rhyme or reason as to what can and can’t exist.
The entire story takes place on a planet called Terra and a land known as Pangea. In this world gods control certain areas of the world to watch over humanity. These areas are called Domains. Each domain contains 2 gods, each being one contrast to the other (as an example, Nightmare has his brother Dream, a god called Panacea has Miasma, and a god called Fate has Chance). The whole story takes place on the domain known as Enigma, this being Nightmare and Dream’s domain.
As a quick note, the world does change over time, I have 3 acts planned out and each introduces new areas, for now though I’m just gonna name random important locations for act 1:
Traveler’s Beginnings - small intro town that has a variety of shops and random buildings
Traveler’s Trials - behind the TB is a forest that is essentially a maze. Holds a variety of locations that are important to random other things
Adventurers’ Guild Base - place for adventurers to get licenses and quests from random people (similar to the HxH, I actually wrote this concept in 2020 before I even knew about HxH funnily enough)
Back alley pawn shop - hidden near the outskirts of both the TB and TT is a pawn shop, it’ll be important for a lot of reasons. Stay tuned lol
Kopperlin - a kingdom made of copper, steel, and random other metals. This place is technically the first real outside location I ever actually wrote about besides TB and it’s neighboring locations
Technopolis - an interestingly high tech area that apparently only mortals can see. Nightmare can’t see it… probably for the best
Seaside Port - generic port that has no use until act 2, for now just know that the sea is a scary place and this port is soon to be very scared of the creatures resting at the bottom
Hands of Time Desert - a biome that’s filled with giant mechanical hands that occasionally jerk and creak about. The sands hold many secrets, only time will uncover what those secrets may be
Snake Eye’s Casino - an enigma of a casino owned by a man who know one knows the face of. Maybe a little time to relax wouldn’t hurt a bit
The Grim Corporation - a conglomerate company and plane of existence that acts as an afterlife in which people have to pay life debts to get to be reincarnated. Multiple types of afterlives exist, but that’s a different topic for now
The Astral Plains - a different dimension ruled by magic and the unknown possibilities of it. Anything can happen here, best to not stick for too long though lest you want to be met by some not so friendly entities
The Junkyard - a different dimension ruled by the Titan of humanity’s stories and evolution: Progress. Anything that gets lost or forgotten ends up here, Progress just likes to collect stuff honestly
Finally is the Necro-Bard’s stage - a town and it’s neighboring forest that holds nothing but dead corpses of those who got caught and turned by the Necro-Bard’s army. Filled with dark purple crystals, the sound of screams, and corrupted looking trees, this area is nothing more than a dead wasteland.
That’s basically all the main important areas. If there’s any questions feel free to ask!

Hi, and happy WBW to you! (as usual I am @writeblr-of-my-own) Sorry that I missed last Saturday ask, but it was a busy week and stuff happened!
So, for today's question something a bit easier and relaxing: tell me a piece of worldbuilding you are extremely proud of! Go on, blabber about it as much as you like!
Happy (late) WBW!!!
I'm sorry I took so long to answer! I got distracted. For 2 days.
You are about to read one of the nerdiest things you've ever seen.
The dystopia WIP (bc of course this is about the dystopia WIP) is set in a world very different from our own in terms of general philosophy. My inicial concept for it was basically "Hey remember the period in between the two World Wars where people were weirdly obsessed with industry and thought machines were the Best Thing Ever? What if it just never stopped being like that?". If you're thinking "wtf?? I don't remember that???", allow me to exemplify by mentioning that Le Corbusier, the architect poster-boy (man??) of modernism, referred to houses as "Machines for Living" (as in, the house is a machine designed for you to live in it).
But I digress.
And from this idea, I developed a sort of... mainstream art movement, I guess, for the world of the dystopia WIP. It's kind of a mix between two real-life art movements: Futurism and Baroque.
Futurism is all about striving for improvement and technological progress above all else, and actively eliminating all history behind you. The quote that basically became Futurism's slogan is, I think, "a car is sexier than any woman", meaning that industry and progress is the most important thing in the world. The futurists were also obsessed with war and thought that countries should constatntly be at war because it breeds inovation. There were fascist undertones, as you might guess. 'Twas pre-WW2 Italy, after all.
Baroque is all about taking the canons of classical tradition and altering them to fit your style, while displaying mastery over them. It's basically about innovating and expanding on Renaissance-era art. The general idea most people have of Baroque art is the drama and pathos of it all, with oblique compositions and tons of light-dark contrast. It technically started off as catholic propaganda and is regarded by many as the origin/prototype of totalitarian architecture (think Nazi Germany or Soviet Union government buildings).
What would the combination of these two be called? Baroque-Futurism? Futuristic-Baroque? I don't know. And I honestly don't think I will ever need to name it in the story, so I just leave it.
In terms of how this would manifest visually, I've kinda drawn some ideas but nothing too final. I remember making a prototype of a variation on the solomonic column, a staple of the Baroque period.
And this shapes the way the characters see the world. There's a scene (the only scene I wrote, I don't even know where it would be set in the timeline) where two characters are discussing the night sky and they say that a starless sky is beautiful because it means humanity's power (expressed through light pollution in this case) is so great that they can blot out the cosmos itself. There's even a city in this world, called the Humming City, that is considered beautiful and awe-inspiring because there are so many machines and technological equipments running at the same time that they create an audible hum, like the one you hear from home appliances at night when everyone is asleep, but much, much louder.
I literally sound insane. But I had a lot of fun!

I couldn't find if you've posted about it specifically before, sorry, but do you have a narrative or timeline in your head for Divorced Zukka? Is it the same standard headcanon in the DZ fandom?
No bother! I know I like hint at stuff a lot but I ALSO can't remember if I've posted about it before. but nothing is turning up in my tag so
(also OMG the CONCEPT of a divorced zukka FANDOM is thrilling and AMAZING and tbh i don't really know a ton of people who post about it consistently except for its inventors @bisexuallsokka and @divorcedzukka but like being turned to as some sort of authority on the matter is a HUGE honor wow)
ahem
idk if this makes sense but my fave thing about DZ as you call it (which I also love) is that it's kind of more of a Feeling than a Timeline?? and i think? everybody is on the same page with the fact that these boys were together when they were young but it just didn't work out but they never got over each other. and then they get back together WAYYY later but they're old but it's just so tragic because they don't get much time because *whispers* Sokka dies *sobs*
yeah so anyway here are some of my PERSONAL headcanons i tend to hold for them
They get together after the war and they fall in love HARD and FAST but LISTEN because they both have trauma and it's kind of good that they can help each other through it but also they're just kids and are not equipped to deal with such big stuff on their own?? like i think they end up really hurting each other with their words and actions as they try to just like... figure out how to be Normal People
So it's not a great relationship but they love each other they really do! but zuko is just SO busy and under SO much pressure as Fire Lord and i think sokka tries to do the ambassador thing for a while, but he also does have responsibilities to the water tribe and republic city when that starts taking off and they really just like... don't have a lot of time for each other?? Sokka's gone a lot and it doesn't help at all
Eventually a few years into it they just keep hurting each other and agree that it's best for both of them to stop
They see each other in official capacities still over the next several decades but it's awkward. They each still have a huge amount of love for each other but it's this "What I want doesn't matter. Look how much better off he is without me" thing
They of course hook up a few times over the years and it's supposed to be casual but it still ends up hurting them both
They each try having other relationships of course, trying to move on, but nothing ever feels right
Anyway eventually when they're older they finally reconnect and it's my own PERSONAL headcanon that this happens in an incredibly tragic way like RIGHT before Sokka dies (I wrote a fic about it, it makes me cry every time)
and I mean yeah. i gotta say i don't LOVE this little bullet point summary but i get why you asked for it so no shade to you. i just really don't have a way to capture the tragedy and the nuance and the PINING and the LOVE in such a short little area.... (((((but my playlist might help with that???)))))

1, 2, and 10 from the writing prompt list!
Yay!! Thank you for indulging me and sending in these asks 🥰
Which of your fics would you keep the basic plot of but rewrite completely?
Not to break anyone's heart but I would probably rewrite I Would Go Blind. When I wrote it, it was supposed to be a one off one shot and has since turned into a little series / universe situation. When I was working on Rid Me of the Blues I felt a little trapped having to follow along with the timeline and lore that had been established in it. For example, Fictional!Matty probably wouldn't have ended up in A&E for drug related reasons so many times... when I was working on Rid Me of the Blues it felt really repetitive, but alas I a had to follow what had already been established for continuities sake.
2. Anything that you'd like to write but feel like you're unable to?
I'm going to get yelled at for this one too, but honestly I wish I was more confident in my smut writing and that I could just write a super filthy fic without feeling like it was the most cliche, cringe thing ever 😂 Because despite my best efforts, I still feel like my smut is cringe. Maybe one day!
10. Top three favourite fic tropes.
Aw man only picking three?! I love omegaverse (shocker) there is just something about the power dynamic, and also the way that every author has their own interpretation of the concept that I really enjoy. Fake Dating just... makes me really happy and smiley because we KNOW that they're going to end up together. And lastly, I know it probably doesn't really count as a trope more of a theme but I'm counting it anyway: angst. I love angst, and pain, and suffering and misery and then finally making it to the happy other side.
Thank you so much for sending this in! If anyone else wants to send questions from the Yet another writing ask list I would be forever grateful!
❤️Ally

4 and 13 for the fic asks!
4. How many WIPs do you have right now?
Two have chapters already posted as I actively work on one and have plans to finish the other. There are two more that I will periodically update the docs for when I have ideas but they’ll probably never see the light of day, they’re mostly just for me when I feel nostalgic for those characters/canons. Another one I’m on the fence about but it would need a lot of attention that I can’t pay to it because my focus is on the posted WIPs in question.
13. How much planning do you do before writing?
In one sense, none at all, but in another sense, a lot! As writing fanfic isn’t my job (though I confess if it was, I doubt much about this process would change except my commitment to forcing myself to sit down and work at it every day), I don’t actually want it to feel like work. To me, traditional outlining feels like work; but more than that, it feels like busy work, and it’s the quickest way to get me to lose interest in a project. So, instead of sitting down and creating an outline, I simply have the fic idea in my head and write down whatever little scene/description/scrap of dialogue comes to my mind whenever I think of it. Sometimes I’ll let it play out in my head for a bit until it solidifies itself into a longer scene, sometimes it’s two sentences of back and forth that I figure out how to incorporate later. This happens completely achronologically; sometimes I’ll write the ending before the beginning, and sometimes the ending will be the last thing I write, but usually the beginning and ending come randomly somewhere in the middle. For my currently updating WIP, I wrote several scenes past what I thought would be the ending, and still don’t have a solid idea what the true ending will be.
I actually struggle very much to place my own memories on a timeline in that I can never really remember how old I was when any specific thing happened. My memories are not sorted chronologically; rather, they’re connected by content, sometimes very loosely, in that a minute detail from one can correspond to a minute detail in another and a different minute detail links it to another minute detail in a third memory, and so on and so forth. This is both a boon to me and a setback, as if you were to ask me, “do you remember what it was like to be sixteen?” I’d have to tell you, unequivocally, “no.” I remember what it feels like to sit alone in the sound booth during the school play. I remember what it feels like to fail the driving test. I remember what it feels like to breathe from a scuba tank for the first time. I know I must have done these things at sixteen because the driving test and the scuba class weren’t available to anyone younger, and I was the sound tech for two years up until my graduation, meaning I must have been sixteen and seventeen. If you asked about what it felt like to be eight, or any age without the benefit of such life-altering milestones, I might conjure up memories from when I was six or nine and be unable to tell the difference.
This is obviously somewhat tangential to the question, except that it helps to contextualize my absolute comfort with achronology in my writing process. Skipping around this way feels very natural to me, where writing completely chronologically is something I have to force myself to do. And it’s a boon to me here, I think, more than a setback; if I’m interested enough in a fic concept, I’ll keep adding these achronological scenes and details until it turns into a passable outline: the critical mass needed for an idea to turn into a story. And unlike a traditional outline, most of those words in mostly that order will show up directly in the finished product. Finally, I go through (mostly) chronologically and add detail, clarify blocking, finish half-started conversations. I add the connective tissue that gets me from one scene to the next. Luckily I don’t have to rearrange too much, as I’ll add the new scenes to the doc in the rough place they’ll end up instead of placing them all in the order I thought of them—for me, this is where digital writing has a massive edge over paper.
I love this rounding out process, because it allows me to focus on the prose itself; I love language, so I enjoy this part very much. I also don’t find the connective pieces to be boring, because I love the puzzle of figuring out how to get the characters from A to B in a way that makes sense and enriches the story, and it allows me to find ways to set multiple things up rather than just the very next scene. I also think this style of drafting is what allows me to do something that several people have talked about when commenting on my fics, where something that comes up early on will have echoes throughout the work, or a recurring symbol or metaphor will keep popping up, or a thought a character had a long time ago will suddenly become relevant again.
So I guess the short answer is, I prepare to write by writing.

You Don’t Actually Answer To Asks Y Lie
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[IMAGE ID]: 3 screenshots all showing the tumblr ask inbox. the first has 3 asks on it, the first one sent (read at the bottom of the page) reads: “do you allow translations of your stories” the second one reads: “Do you allow translations of your work?” and the third reads: “y do you not answer asks”. The second screenshot shows one ask that reads: “hello?” with many o’s and question marks. The third screenshot shows a final ask reading: “y u ignore asks”. [IMAGE ID END]
um, good morning !
first and foremost: nobody online owes you shit, anon. like literally nobody, especially not someone who just posts bnha fanfiction at incredibly random increments. it’s just not how the world works.
i get that u asked a question and (im assuming) really really want to translate my writing, but i’m allowed to not answer literally anything in my inbox for whatever reason without getting spammed? like, i would understand maybe a reminder ask to make sure tumblr didn’t delete your ask, but, in general, this was excessive.
the internet is here for your convenience and entertainment , yes, but that doesn’t mean that *i* am here for your convenience and entertainment. i provide a free service (and honestly don’t even provide it regularly) because i want to, not because i’m obligated.
and, that goes for literally any request for fanfiction authors. “you wrote this ooc” or “you need to update this” or sending requests or telling the author how their fics should end — literally anything you could think of, people online who you are Not Paying Or Bartering Services From can just ignore you. that’s how it works.
moving past that (if i were somehow obligated to answer your ask immediately) i haven’t been online and answering asks and just ignoring yours to be mean or something. i haven’t actually been on the app for longer than maybe 2 mins at a time in over a month because … and i know this might be a foreign in concept for you and your view of people online … i have been busy!
i’m also not in the habit of checking my asks, to be completely truthful. it’s been over a year since i’ve gotten one, other than the literal two last month, if i’m remembering correctly, because 99% of my followers are lurkers (i love you all dearly and am exactly the same way) but i’m just. not in the habit of checking!!
to answer your question, though, no. i’m not comfortable with people translating my works because i feel like it opens the floodgates for people copying and pasting my works and posting them as their own without me able to check and regulate it. if i were to have works translated, i def wouldn’t feel comfortable with someone on anon asking to do it because i would want to know where and when they were posting the translations and i would probably talk to whoever wanted to translate extensively before letting them post anything (mainly to make sure they’re not just going to slap my fanfic into google translate tbh).
and, i’m going to be honest with you buddy, what you really should take out of this interaction is that you probably really need to get offline for a few hours. it’s not the end of the world if one blog doesn’t answer your ask within the week that you sent it. i didn’t see it, i wasn’t maliciously ignoring you, and (for anyone wondering or waiting for an ask to be answered) i always intend to get to asks eventually, im just not going to always answer super fast. and sometimes i won’t answer if it’s something i don’t want to answer or a request i don’t want to do or literally any other reason because I Don’t Have To.
(if there are any typos in this, i’m sorry, i just woke up for a little morning fanfic read after not being able to sleep and saw this … mess. now, i have a rlly nice anon to answer and imma do that :) this was in no way to discourage people sending me asks — this was to discourage people from spamming me because i didn’t answer on the timeline they’ve imposed on me)
