December 11th, 2023 - Master Detective Archives: Rain Code

Wasn't sure what to expect from the newest game by the creator of Danganronpa, but I can say it was definitely an interesting game that also happened to be really weird. It's a different style of game being more "interactive movie" than a visual novel and there's plenty of actual gameplay. Between cases, the main character, Yuma explores Kanai Ward, finding collectibles and doing side quests. Despite gameplay being a lot different from Danganronpa, there were a lot of things that were really similar.

Mystery Labyrinths function like class trials, but the minigames are pretty different, aside from Deduction Denouement at the end, which is pretty much Closing Argument. And much like Danganronpa, there are minigames that felt shoehorned in, like Shinigami Puzzle where I usually knew where the case was going but wasn't always quite sure what word it wanted me to come up with. There are also quick time events, in and out of the labyrinths. I messed them up a lot because I wasn't always fast enough or because I got X and Y mixed up.

For the most part, I did really enjoy this game and the Mystery Labyrinths are okay, but could use some improvements because they feel kinda thrown together. The plot was interesting and the cases I felt were much better thought out than what was come up with in Danganronpa, however, I am not a big fan of constantly relying on deus ex machina at the end of each one since only whoever enters the mystery labyrinth will know anything. The murder methods this time around were actually kind of insane and I was not prepared for anything that was going to happen in the last couple of chapters including that really crazy twist. At the very least, I do think all the mysteries were thought out better than in DR.

Speaking of DR, a tweet from the series creator made me think there would actually be some connection to Danganronpa, but the only real connections are just a few references here and there. There was one element similar to DR that was handled differently here though. In the end, it's definitely a solid follow up to Danganronpa. It takes things from the previous series and puts its own spin on them while feeling like something new at the same time. Really hope we can get more games in this style, with some improvements here and there.

Trying to finish something I was supposed to do ages ago--spinning a contrast color for this sock yarn. The fleece (southdown babydoll) had a pretty wide range of grays, most of which I blended together. But I intentionally left the darkest gray out of the mix so that later I could spin up just that, and have a dark gray for the toe and heel. So, now I'm doing that.

One thing I did not realize until now (due to intentionally avoiding working with the darker gray locks) is that they are all much shorter than the other colors of gray, and a lot of them are way finer too. That's not ideal, so I might not use it for the toe--it won't be as hard-wearing of a yarn and the toe/ball of the foot is what wears out the fastest on my socks by far, so. It's fine though, I just want some kind of decorative element that uses the fact that this fleece had lots of nice colors.

I'm also not that surprised, I guess. The longest locks were always the very light gray ones. Hard to know why without seeing the sheep though.

I'm sorry if I sound like a broken disc but this line will haunt me till the end of my days because I'm unfortunately a Gale girlie and you'd think that "Hey if you eat this tadpole then your boyfriend doesn't have to kill himself" would be a VERY OBVIOUS thing for him to say to manipulate you and he just. never does. Like I know Act 3 is very rushed and Gale's arc is also rushed but like, bestie, you did manage to keep his character arc somewhat consistent regarding his sacrificial/suicidal tendencies to the point that you have to keep talking Gale down from blowing himself up until the last moment. The sense of foreboding is very present and very real. But the Emperor just... never thinks to use Gale as motivation? He'll throw his favourite soup at you and take his shirt off and tell you you are the specialest thrall of all and the tadpole will make you super beautiful and powerful but he'll never go "Maybe if you are super powerful your boyfriend won't have to kill himself"?

Like I know there (kind of is) a theme in Act 3 where the Emperor is clearly trying to separate you from the group as he wants you exclusively under his own influence, but if he is at the stage where he is trying everything, from being nice and sympathetic to outright threats and whatnot, you would think he would start using your love for others against you. But no. To be clear, Emperor is not the only one to make very baffling manipulative decisions (Orin you had all the time in the world to plan your very super special kidnapping and you picked the companion I care less about?! You got an army of shapeshifters and you couldn't figure out a plan to kidnap my love interest?!) but all this needed was like, three lines of dialogue. But instead he never does something that would be very obvious for him to do and then he says shit like this.

all im saying is that Laszlo loudly declares himself the King of Bottoms and then immediately takes Guillermo under his wing
