#Stargate bigotry

Yeah Babylon 5 definitely has a racism problem with almost every (like, 99% I think) one-off character whose only role is to Cause Problems and Be Blatantly Wrong is a person of color.
And unlike most series I complain about I seriously think this is the only complaint I have so far on the rewatch. I noticed it the first time and I'm not noticing anything else the second time so that's a good thing.
Star Trek: The Next Generation also does this same routine, usually putting Worf in the position of Always Wrong.
I have a post somewhere where I also talked about how Stargate used this strategy of a character Always Being Wrong so that when the guy is literally just saying "hey war crimes are bad maybe we shouldn't do them" everyone points and laughs at how pathetic he is and you're supposed to think he's ridiculous and absurd and not even pay attention to what he's actually saying. (Which is that War Crimes Are Bad And You Shouldn't Do Them)
So yeah Babylon 5 definitely has this problem, but it's the only complaint I have about it.
It treats the other characters of color fine, it doesn't treat women like shit, no one commits genocide or war crimes and we're supposed to cheer it on, it's actively and explicitly antifascist...
And yeah I'm still not fucking over Star Trek claiming to be a utopia and then they still have child abuse that no one thinks is unusual or a crime along with systemic misogyny where women are forced to stay at home and spend their whole lives cleaning up after their husband and children and not able to use any of the technology invented to make their lives easier, as the least violent and disgusting example of any of the misogyny in the Star Trek universe.
Since all the multi-human cast sci-fi shows do this exact same thing I think somebody should make a Sci-Fi show where the main cast is 99% people of color with a few random white characters and then almost everybody around them is also a person of color and then the only time of random other white person enters the scene it's to deliver like maybe one sentence where they are blatantly in the wrong and blatantly being a bigot and everybody hates them.
I can't remember the name of the guy who plays Worf but he should have the leading role.

20 Questions Game
Thanks for tagging me @maria-de-salinas!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
97!!!
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
444,377
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Mostly Stargate. A few other lone fandoms that are gifts for people.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Your Attention
Suspicious Packages
And All The Rest
In A Manner Of Speaking
Ex-Communication
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Always. It's important to me that people know I've read their comments. Even if it's just a 🖤, I want you to know that I see you and I acknowledge you and I am thankful for you.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
All of the Whumptober fics, the last thing you never see (a Fallout/Stargate fusion), and Subnautica (another video game fusion).
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
It'll probably be the last part of The Long Dark if I ever get there...
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Yup, somewhat regularly. Mostly it's bigotry because I dare to to write characters that aren't cis in my fics...
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Not really. I have a couple of E rated fics, but mostly I stick to the M rating. I'm more comfortable there.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Yes, but more fusions than true crossovers. It's a lot of fun taking characters and dumping them into video game worlds! Subnautica was an early fic I wrote that was a complete experiment. It's entirely dialogue, and I wasn't sure it was going to work out. I like what it became.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
IDK. I hope not.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope. But I have an open Transformative Works Policy, and I am happy for people to do so if they want to. (I have a bunch of podfic gifts, for which I am so utterly grateful and excited!)
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
No, but I have written other people's prompts and gifted works to people based on their ideas. @bunny-bopper does so much shaping and idea bouncing that there are a couple of fics I'd gladly credit her on, but she wouldn't let me.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
McShep.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Gosh, I have a few. I get bogged down in my serial killer fic when I'm in a mood, it keeps heading too dark for me to be comfortable sharing it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
People seem to feel like my characters stay in character in my AUs, which is a relief because I often ask myself "What would Rodney or John do/feel/say in a world where *his life is very different*" and the answers always surprise me.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Commas, semi-colons, run-on sentences, and I have zero consideration for any of the school-taught writing rules which I am certain can be offputting for some people. If I want to open with dialogue then I'm going to open with dialogue.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I think if you feel competent enough to do it then go for it. I am not, but I will throw in words and common phrases if a canon character does so.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The X Files. I wrote a little Scully/Milder kiss fic when I was a preteen. I wish I still had that. I never showed it to anyone. not even Bun.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
Possibly an unexpected answer, but 101 Contritions is my most self-comforting fic.
Tagging: @massharp1971, @colonelshepparrrrd, @dedkake, and anyone else. If you like to do these, consider yourself tagged!

Today i did water bottles, helped sis make pie with leftover apples and tried to get the dogs used to splashing around in a small old sink tub, they didn't like getting their paws wet so we did bobbing for frozen apple pieces.
Video essays i enjoyed (watched a bunch of 20 minute ones at 1.25 because I'm not in the mood for hours on [specific nuances through time of specific bigotries] or [trendy grift] :
This guy patiently explains why Anglo-Saxon doesn't mean much to brits, it's a chaotic part of our chaotic beginnings. I just tell people they don't understand how 23 and me works, sold their dna to shady people and got 'standard euro mutt' .
youtube
youtube
Shaun articulates exactly what i feel about Ex Machina (except that i'd want to add that sentient intelligence in machines may not manifest in a way that we can directly translate to human concepts, the law is not ready. Human rights aren't even enshrined let alone sentient rights) .
If anyone knows a channel that goes into ya-adult tv from the early 90s onwards: reviews, analysis, critique I'd love that especially stuff like Dark angel, Dresden files Constantine, Stargate and all the syfy, bbc and cbc stuff.
There's a whole new set of deep dives into video games, anime and cartoons every week but I don't game, I'm picky about cartoons (SU was pretty good, i do prefer a batman tas) and can't watch subs without being close to the monitor, I kinda wish I could get into that, people put a lot of thought into it.
I don't like to pirate recent movies worth supporting (disney can rot tho) so MANY currently relevant video essays by people I respect are off limits until a bunch of films get to digital release in France: 17 months from theatrical release. You can bypass it for netflix with a vpn but anywhere else sees the french address on my paypal or creditcard and denies purchase. It's a protect the industry thing, like not homebrewing. Might make no sense but they do have to invest a portion of the money made back into film, you'll often see studio canal or pathé on films. That's money from french people going to cinemas and using canalplus for a 15 oh wait lmgt 6 month release window.

(I was originally going to make this a long Twitter thread but people are talking about there being a tweet limit now? So I’m just posting it here and linking it in a tweet. That's why it's in small tweet sized segments.)
Let me start by saying that I am a mostly-white CIS gender male hetero in his mid 30s. Let that color how you feel about my words however much or as little as you wish. Thats up to you.
TW: Harry Potter
Let me start by saying fuck JK. I can’t imagine winning the lottery of life and getting to be the creative mind behind a fictional world that shapes and enriches the lives of a generation, only to take that power and wield it for hate and bigotry. She deserves to have her works and name forgotten and to have only the void to speak her words into.
And with that in mind Harry Potter as a franchise is dead to me. I don’t want to play that game. I don’t want to rewatch the movies. I don’t want to read her books.
Let me be clear this is not a big ask of me. Harry Potter was never more than a passing fancy of mine from time to time growing up. Don’t give me too much credit. I don’t know that I’d be as easily able to divorce myself from something like Final Fantasy or Sonic the Hedgehog or StarGate.
I don’t think you should play the new HP game. I don’t think you should buy it. I don’t think you should stream it. Even if you try to offset that by donating to Trans causes you’re still promoting the game and could encourage others to buy it by showing it off. Funding a fire department is nobel, but don’t do it in a way that fuels the fire in the process.
There are plenty of people who don’t care. They buy the game and support JK BECAUSE of her anti trans stance. Fuck those people. I hope their follower counts crater their names forgotten. I’m sure a lot of you agree with me so far.
But what we hope isn’t happening. JK is still making bank. The hateful streamers are bolstered. The game is selling remarkably well. This is frustrating. Aggravating. Infuriating. In the face of these we feel helpless. We get angry. And unfortunately we lash out.
I have control issues I have to keep in check. I know the feeling of something big or small not being as I wish it to be. I often battle that white hot rage. Losing my absolute shit over things is something I actively have to talk myself out of more often than I like to admit.
And let me tell you. Not once has letting that anger get the best of me ever made things better. Not once did it fix the problem. Not once did it change things to be better. At best it does nothing. At worst it almost cost me my closest friends.
That’s the reaction I’ve seen to the new HP game. Steamers hate raided. Death threats. Verbally harassed and demonized. Treated not like people but like soulless heartless monsters to be destroyed. This is wrong and fixes nothing. It’s just us letting our darker emotions lash out without restraint.
No hearts are changed. No minds are changed. Trans people are not made more safe by these actions. I don’t think we expect these actions to do any of that but when you scream in rage “you are with us or against us” people rarely choose with you and are often pushed to against you. These actions do harm to our own cause.
You can’t tell me that a streamer hoping to raise money for Trans charities by playing this game is the same as the ones who proudly write “TERF” on their chest. I’ve already made it clear that I don’t think that idea is a good one. But you can’t tell me someone whose heart is in the right place deserves hate because you don’t agree with their methods.
And maybe I’m wrong. Maybe it is better to raise money off this game for a good cause. Maybe that will do more good. I honestly don’t think so but how the hell can I be so sure? How can I run out and try to police the internet using my hate as a weapon over something that kind hearts can disagree on?
Now if you want to unfollow these steamers, stop supporting them, swear off their content, you are 100% justified in doing so. They are not owed your support if they make decisions that are counter to your values, even if their heart is in the right place. Let them see the consequences of their choice in viewer and follower count.
That is far more likely to get them to stop and rethink about what they are doing. But attacking them? At best they may stop making content because they can’t emotionally deal with backlash. At worst you’ve made them feel like your enemy. And people crave community. And the TERFS will welcome them with open arms.
But I get it. I’m sure we all hoped that any streamer who played this game would see their viewer count plummet and they’d get the message and change and the game would flop and JK would watch another part of her empire crumble as a result of her words and actions. That didn’t happen and we, understandably, got mad. But don’t let your anger make things worse.
TLDR: Fuck JK. Fuck HP. Fuck that game. But don’t attack people for playing it. Just unfollow.

Stargate SG1 s07e07 ‘Enemy Mine’
Tumblr media
Does it pass the Bechdel Test?
No.
How many female characters (with names and lines) are there?
One (9.09% of cast).
How many male characters (with names and lines) are there?
Ten.
Positive Content Rating:
Three.
General Episode Quality:
It’s ok. Goes exactly how you expect.
MORE INFO (and potential spoilers) UNDER THE CUT:
Passing the Bechdel:
Carter is not only the sole woman around, she’s also only in one scene. For some reason they never use her character to effect in Unas episodes.
Tumblr media
Female characters:
Samantha Carter.
Male characters:
Evan Lorne.
Edwards.
Menard.
Jack O’Neill.
Teal’c.
Daniel Jackson.
George Hammond.
Vidrine.
Chaka.
Ironshirt.
OTHER NOTES:
Major Lorne! We get to know and love him much better once he crosses over to the Atlantis spin-off, which at this point in the chronology was not a thing yet.
Tumblr media
Daniel does most of his talking to the Unas in English, which is convenient for the viewing audience, but pretty fucking impractical for communicating in-episode.
Tumblr media
Interesting decision to sideline O’Neill here, so that Daniel could run up against some anti-alien bigotry without the show having to go there with O’Neill AGAIN. Honestly, this whole outing adds nothing to the Unas story, working basically as a retread of the previous two episodes involving Chaka - the first of which was legitimately engaging, the second of which was offensive garbage. The stink of that second episode is all over this one as we stumble lazily through the same old metaphor of the Unas as stand-ins for non-white peoples; where the previous metaphor was barely metaphorical at all, comparing the Unas to the victims of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and then having the gall to question whether their right to freedom was worth the cost to their white owners, this episode plays just a little more conceptual and a little less openly racist, this time with a suspiciously familiar comparison to Indigenous cultures having their sacred grounds trampled by colonial mining operations in the name of capitalism. Frankly, they did it better in season two with the literal-Native-Americans in ‘Spirits’ - at least they were less Disney’s Pocahontas about it. Really, they should just stop using ‘primitive beastly aliens’ as their non-white cultural metaphors. Just stop doing that.

officialhelljumper replied to your post: Amazon is going forward with the live-action Lord...
I doubt it’ll be The Silmarillion but if it is, I’ll be pleasantly surprised, and even a bit excited, but without The Silmarillion, the idea that this series will be a prequel to The Lord of the Rings rubs me the wrong way and doesn’t give me a lot of faith or interest, until we know who’s making it and what the stories are.
They just need to make a Last Alliance TV series. It can be grimdark as fuck because it’s about a war, there can be politics and flashbacks to the formation of said Alliance, we can even have good orc characters because it’s said in a couple sources that all the peoples of Middle-Earth united against Sauron and I for one would love to see free independent orcs fighting to free their people from thraldom like Teal’c from Stargate did. (Yes, I brought Stargate into this. They did that plot really well and are kind of my gold standard now for any Good Orc storyline.) It would give people a chance to tell a story about fighting against oppression and bigotry and a megalomaniacal, bigoted, egotistical, xenophobic embodiment of evil by banding together and celebrating their diversity.

Yeah the only fucking reason Mirrim's ableist and amisic(sarcasm: before it was cool! /sarcasm)/intersexist (Ruth isn't intersex but she's implying he is as an insult) is because she's a female character who's not a love interest and therefore Anne McCaffrey hates her.
It's very fucking obvious when a characters is a bigot because the author wants to illistrate that bigotry is wrong, and when a character is a bigot because that's an easy shorthand telling everyone to hate the character.
This is why a lot of shows will have one-off background characters who are rude/bigoted/evil/wrong and are oh so conveniently almost every single time people of color. Because it's okay to hate Black and brown people while upholding the white people as morally superior in every way as long as the one-off unnamed POC is a bigot!!!!!
This tactic is also used to demonize a character with obvious bigotry so that when they start whistleblowing war crimes you won't give a shit what they have to say because you've already written them off. Stargate: Atlantis did this, as did SG1.
and yes I will be tagging every show off the top of my head I can think of that does this.

Fic: Questions
I had a prompt from @white-throated-packrat quite a while ago for an SGU fic in which Camille became a sort of mother and mentor figure to the queer community on Destiny, and I left it alone for a long while as I wanted to do it justice. It turned into more of a character introspective than a fic, but I hope you like it nonetheless.
Rated: G
=====
Questions
If there's one thing that Camille has realised as an openly homosexual woman, it's that the questions will never end. The very fact of being lesbian seems to open itself up to all kinds of questions, from the innocent to the offensive. She knows that until the world changes, she's likely never to be free of these questions. Even in changing times, with increased visibility of various minority groups, she's still going to get asked questions about her sexual orientation. Sometimes these questions come from a place of genuine ignorance, because education has not moved on anywhere near as quickly as the times around them have. In these cases, Camille tries to be patient, not to chastise people for the things they do not yet know, and to educate as best she can. If they still don't see things in a reasonable light or see that their words could be better chosen, then that's on them, not her. Sometimes the questions come from a place of malice, where it's clear that the person speaking to her is looking for a fight and looking for a rise. She doesn't give them the satisfaction of knowing that they've got under her skin. She hurts and bleeds just as much as the next person, but she feels that her armour must be thicker, stronger, and she cannot sink to their level of petty, hurtful words. She ignores the hatred and the bigotry directed towards her and holds her head high, and she cries to Sharon when she gets home to the safe space that they have created for themselves. It's draining sometimes, but she's lived through it for a long time and she will keep living through it.
Then sometimes, there are the questions that are a plea for help or advice, however nervous they might be and however veiled in other layers of questions they might be asked. These questions, Camille will always answer. In her position in human resources, she has come across these questions increasingly frequently, and she always strives to do as much as she can for these people. If they are coming to her, she reasons, then they probably don't have anywhere else to go.
Camille's never had a huge desire to be a mother, but with these people - of all ages and genders - who are coming to her for advice, she does feel a certain protectiveness, like the mother hen watching over her chicks, and it's something that stays with her for a long time.
Her first experience of it comes on Icarus, really. A young sergeant approaches her with a certain degree of unsureness not usually displayed by the military. But part of Camille's job is to set people at ease, so she smiles and asks open questions as she thinks she knows what this particular consultation is really about. And little by little, she draws out what really underlies their problem. By the end of their discussion, the sergeant is smiling, and Camille feels a definite sense of pride and community in having been able to share her own experience and provide the reassurance and support that is needed. The next time she visits earth, she tells Sharon about it. Mentioning no names, of course, HR confidentiality, but the sense of protectiveness remains with her and she's already formulating ideas in her mind, more structured ways in which she can help once she gets back to earth on a permanent basis. Putting resources in place so that people can access what they need instead of feeling that they have to hunt her down and ask her furtively.
But Camille never makes it back to earth on a permanent basis. At least, it doesn't look like she's going to. On one of her visits home with the stones, awkward in an unfamiliar body, she shares her disappointment with Sharon that her nebulous plans will likely never come into fruition. The IOA and Stargate Command have far more important things to spend their time, money and energy on than helping the LGBT community within their own organisations. To be fair, when surviving on Destiny is sometimes an hourly challenge, it's not something that's at the forefront of Camille's mind most of the time. But it's always there below the surface, that protectiveness. Naturally sexual orientation isn't something that's recorded in personnel files, but it's something that comes out over time as the stranded survivors get to know each other a little better. People miss their loved ones; the distance and uncertainty prove too much for some relationships, and new ones are formed on board their home. And just like on Icarus, Camille finds that she is the person that her queer brothers and sisters come to first for advice and help, even if she is not ordinarily part of their friendship group. There's a new group forming, a community within a community with Camille as its unofficial leader. It's a position she never intended to hold, but it's one that she doesn't mind now that it's fallen into her lap. Just like before, she feels protective of these little chicks, but more than that. She wants to help them build confidence in their own identities so that they can spread their wings with ease. She loves to help them, but what a beautiful world it would be where she doesn't have to because the prejudices that cause that need have been broken down.
That is one thing that can be said for living in such a small and isolated community all the time. With everyone in such close quarters being forced to get along all the time, perceptions can change and people can soften. The sense of friendship will grow over time, and so will acceptance. Their microcosmic society is in no way perfect and there will always be conflict with so many strong personalities clashing over what seems like every single decision, but it's a good starting point. And then, purely by accident, they get the chance to start their own society. There on Novus, they start completely from scratch. It is hard. Very hard. This is perhaps the hardest thing that they have ever done between them, because this is it, there is nothing else that they can do except live. The sense of community that was created on the ship becomes ever stronger because they are truly on their own now with no help from the outside world.
And now more than ever, relationships form, and new generations are born.
Despite their small community and their closeness to each other, Camille finds that she still, even years down the line, receives those questions, those veiled pleas for help. They no longer come from her own generation now, but from the ones that come after her. Everyone knows her as the matriarch of their community, single and solitary, having accepted the loss of the love of her life and having no desire to move on and find another one. It was a done deal long ago for her, and she's content to remain alone. Not lonely; she's never lonely in their little community. But she doesn't feel the need to pair up again, like it seems that everyone else is doing. But although she comes to be seen as the matriarch of their society in general, she is even more of a mother figure to the growing queer community. Sons and daughters come to her with their problems, because even though Camille knows that their own parents would be perfectly accepting of them - they have all lived together and got to know each other well enough by now for her to be sure of that - it is still sometimes easier to get advice from someone who knows, someone who is a member of that community themselves.
Camille can't answer every question, because she can only speak from her own experience. She has no tailored advice for the asexual people, the non-binary people. But she understands their fears and their confusions and their questions, and she can provide them with the compassion and the listening ear that they need in that moment, even if she cannot provide help. And sometimes, that's really all they need. And for the cases that she can't help, she helps them to help themselves as best they can. There are no other resources available for them, she can't send them to someone else who could perhaps help them better with more relevant experiences. But she enlists the help of the members of her own generation, and together they create a framework that will hold and grow. Camille no longer feels worried about what will happen to her community once she is no longer a part of it. There is structure and resilience now, the way it should be, and the lessons and advice that she has always given to her little chicks will not die with her, they will continue to thrive and help others. A legacy of the very best kind, she feels.
On Destiny, Camille reviews the videos that her other self made on Novus, and listens to herself talking about the people she has become so passionately protective of. For a long time she can't speak, she just sits there staring at the paused video, thinking about everything that she's heard. For someone who never intended to become a mother, she has ended up with so many people looking to her for advice, and she really couldn't be happier about it.
She smiles and shuts down the video, leaving to go about her daily tasks, determined that she will still keep answering questions for her little chicks for as long as she possibly can.

It had been fifty years since the Merge, but there were still a significant number of people who were sore about the whole thing. Who saw it as their world, which had been overrun by ‘others’, instead of a peaceful intermingling of realities, which belonged solely to no one.

Starlight Manifesto has just been released!
The latest core rulebook from Dancing Lights Press, billed as A Game of Humanity & Hope, Starlight Manifesto is a science fiction game set in humanity’s future, where the species has conquered its greed, racism and assorted bigotry, and headed out to the stars.
Think of Star Trek, more than Stargate or Farscape. Think of Doctor Who.
Uses the Lighthouse roleplaying engine.

Yay! New Stargate! But the main Stargate forum is run by a TERF. They're actively protecting transphobes on there now. There are entire sections of the forum that are safe places for bigotry, hatred and ignorance. If you want to talk about Stargate but are LGBTQ+ don't go to Gateworld.
I did not know that, I'm a fan but never been on there, that's really bad

Turns out I do have few more TNG thoughts.
-Okay, it's not like I was expecting Tasha Yar to stick around forever (because I never heard of her before I started watching), but I figured she would just disappear like Yeoman Rand. I did not expect a Star Trek to kill off a main cast member. I can't figure out whether I am annoyed or impressed that it was so random, but I really wish they had explored her interesting-sounding backstory before killing her off. (And it sounds like the actress would have been less inclined to leave if she ever had been given something that interesting to do, but...) She was cool.
-The Conspiracy: Oh, that's where Stargate came from!
-The Neutral Zone: Oh, that's where Futurama came from! Also “your neutralness, it's a beige alert!” etc. Also, mysterious enemy that eats Federation and Romulan bases indiscriminately. Is it the Borg? I bet it's the Borg. They are a thing I know exist.
-Season 2: Riker has his beard and it is glorious! Does that mean the show is 100% better now? No... no it does not. But it's making progress!
-I do like that the main plot of an episode can be awkward, gross, rape-y, etc, but we still manage to get great character stuff and performances. Data is always delightful, and the rest of the main cast is fantastic even when given weird scripts. Also, Whoopi Goldberg!
-Can I just say for a moment that Wesley's story in the s2 premiere was kinda amazing? I mean, okay, I am biased because he is a tiny adorable nerd, but I could understand why people often found him annoying in s1, even if I did not feel that myself. But here they gave him a real character development plot, more than just being a wonder kid, and he knocked it out of the park.
-Speaking of which, I know Dr. Crusher will be back sooner or later. I watched Generations many a time in my teen years (I am aware that I will probably find it terrible by the time I'm done here), and the cast picture for s2 on Amazon Instant Video includes her. I was still shocked and distraught by her disappearance and the new lady who is... kind of horrible. Like, she seems like a perfectly good doctor and I'm sure the character could have plenty of redeeming qualities. And I try, these days, not to hate on a character just for replacing a character I liked—I mean, guys, I like Jonas Quinn, okay, and Dr. Crusher didn't even die so it is pretty obvious she will be back as soon as this lady outstays her welcome (what, as soon as contracts get rediscussed? Fans express their displeasure? A certain possibly sexist writer gets fired or something?). But, I think her name's Dr. Pulaski? Is just super unlikable to me. She's pushy, and kind of patronizing, and she does not seem to be making any effort to acclimate to her surroundings, and she utterly and consistently refuses to respect Data as a living being. I'm sure the writers felt it was an interesting character quirk, but... no. Data is amazing, he does not need to experience bigotry in his daily life. Maybe it will be a bit of a character arc, which would be nice, but mostly I just feel “nope, bring back Dr. Crusher now.”
Anyway, I only watched the first 2 episodes of s2. There was, as discussed, much awkwardness, but it felt a bit smoother to me; perhaps the cinematography improved, or something? And the second episode was not awkward at all!
