Footnotes
The title of the song may also be read as "Jaguar Note", like the notes of a Jaguar guitar. For in Japanese the "jugger(ジャガー)" from juggernaut is written the same way as “Jaguar”, and the "naut(ノート)" is written the same was as "note". Not to mention that the character on the artwork has the features of a Jaguar guitar, you can tell it's not a Jazzmaster by the number of switches and the "claw" on the edges of the pickup.
Comments from SNS via https://www.barks.jp/news/?id=1000241348 SND said that he wanted to “Portray that batshit insane sensation you get when electricity first runs through your electric guitar.”, and so was the MV directed by shun murakami (vil Tokyo). Juggernaut, the word, means “A force so powerful that it’s downright unstoppable by anyone” or “sheer destructive power” Which perfectly describes that strange way that you feel invincible when you pick up an electric guitar, And how when you really distort that same guitar, it comes to just pack such a punch the second you strum it Not to mention that there’s an electric guitar called the Jaguar(Jugger pun) out there, And I had even used one in the recording for this song The album art too; at first I simply only had the idea to merge a girl with an electric guitar, then somehow that electric guitar turned into a Jaguar while I was drawing. Put aaaall that stuff together and you get “The sound of the Jaguar”, ahaha- Or, though, with that said, those words should never be uttered… Never underestimate its sheer destructive power. And so, no word could possibly ever fit this song better than the word “Juggernaut”.

Shinoda’s Oct. 28 2023 Diary Post:
Unlike the other day, today I had duties to attend to, today was one of those days when I actually had to do things.
Well ‘cause Shino-Tetsu(A solo tour of Shinoda's, he's zooming around to all 47 prefectures, performing a variety of Hitorie songs mixed with his old cakebox and Dr.Right songs on acoustic guitar) in Nagoya is coming up soon so I gotta handle preparations and stuff. I have so much I gotta consider~ I thought to myself as I lied down, and by the time I came to my senses Hitorie’s newest release had been announced. On 11/8, Juggernaut, it’s coming. The title may share its name with a war machine from 86, but I ask for you to take a step back and think about it a little harder as well.
Ohh yeah, today is the day they said it would be announced huh, I thought silently, as I found myself staring mindlessly at the album art, reassessing it.
I did a pretty damn good job if I do say so myself, wouldn’t y’all agree.
To make it, for the first time in ages I had pulled out some manuscript paper, drew traditionally, and even added screentones. I had originally planned to make the colors monochromatic but, after putting it through the scanner and into Clip Studio Paint, I tested how it would look with the contrast cranked up. The blue shades slumbering beneath the manuscript paper came crackling and popping out, while the texture of the screentones I had glued to the hair got all grainy and gritty. It struck me so cool that I just had to toss out the original concept, and thus instead turn it into the vibrant and spunky art that you see today.
Thinking back, it would’ve been cool if I had left the art in monochrome, but then used a vivid red for the colored bits. Maybe one day if I feel like it, I might make something like that.
In regards to the song itself, it’s all so fun and stupid and stuff that explaining it all would be too much of a pain in the ass, but whatever just know that it’s awesome. So it would make me happy if everyone out there could fall in love with the music and the art both. Ugh, I don’t wanna do my laundry.
SND’s Nov. 4th 2023 Diary Post:
Today, past midnight at 25 o’ clock, our new song, Juggernaut. will be airing on FM802. Hold on to your butts, a really good song is coming in hot. I’m a big fan of Fender Jaguars, so other than the red one I’ve been borrowing from Leader, I own my own Fender Japan one. Mine looks like a guitar cyborg, with metal parts which serve no apparent purpose attached to it like patchwork. And sick is the only word you could use to describe it.
For a period of time, opinions such as “The Jaguar is hard to use and it always sounds off tune, it’s the utmost worst guitar” were buzzing around my Twitter Timeline- aka my tiny bubble of a world. Yet at the time that tiny bubble was everything to me, so it naturally warped my opinion on Jaguars. I came to believe that they were cool looking guitars wasted on the fact that they weren’t actually good for anything. Yet once I laid my hands on one myself, I realized that though there may be a million more advanced guitars than these guys, there exists no guitars that could ever beat ‘em.
Leader’s red Jaguar, when I played as a substitute guitarist for Acchan (a.k.a. cocco) I had used it on stage for a number of songs. Yumao (our drummer), who had been listening the whole time, afterwards told me “That Jaguar sounded so good”. Yumao of all people, the guy who’s so fussy over sounds, even thought highly of it. So there’s no mistaking it: Leader, you made a good purchase here.

Could you please share the name of the distortion you used in Juggernaut? I had used my Experience fuzz like crazy
The composition of Juggernaut is so good!! Did you use a fuzz for your solo? I think maybe for the solo I had recorded with an Experience fuzz, and using the rear pickup on my Jazzmaster…?????
What’s the inside scoop behind the making of Juggernaut? There was actually a large gap between when I wrote the lyrics of the first chorus and when I wrote the second chorus- I had been stuck with nothing to do when I wrote the first one, yet had been painstakingly busy when I wrote the second.
Where’s the moment when the essence of the Jaguar is the most intense in Juggernaut? The guitar you can hear on the right is basically that. I feel like maybe the latter half of both of the verses is where you can especially appreciate the sound of the Jaguar
Juggernaut is incredible! Does the girl on the album artwork have a name?
Are you using a HAX at the very end of Juggernaut? I’m not, I added plugin fuzz to the recording of my amp to get that sound
On Twitter ygarshy retweeted the music video with the tag #銀人, meaning silver man, referencing the figure in the MV covered in aluminum foil. It soon turned into a sort of meme among the fandom, with everyone coming together to joke about Shinoda again.
Who was the one who came up with the silver man? The director
What did you think when you were asked to do the silver man thing? やります、と思いました “I’ll do it”
What was it like being the silver man? I learned that your voice gets all messed up when you’re in that state
I’d imagine silver man is baking hot in there It was hot at first but once it got later in the day and the temperature starting dropping, I was freezing my butt off
Do you read 銀人 as Ginto or Ginjin? Ginjin please

Ongaku to Hito March 2023 Issue - Bocchi the Rock! Insights and Interviews with Bandmen
Shinoda from Hitorie: I’m a big fan of the guitarist who does the arrangement work for Kessoku Band, Mitsui Ritsuo (also known for his work in The Youth, Lost in Time, and la la larks). I’ve been listening to The Youth since I was a teenager, and now that I’m older have I gotten the opportunity to perform shows along with Mitsui-san, on top of getting to go out drinking with him as well. Before I had watched the anime ‘Bocchi the Rock!’ I had happened to stroll upon the music video of “If I could be a Constellation” from the soundtrack. I had assumed it was just any other old popular song, until I saw Mitsui-san’s name on it. “Holy shit, Mitsui-san is gaining traction?!” I thought, [he laughs]. To top it all off the song was absolutely brilliant. I had been hearing the name ‘Bocchi the Rock!’ floating around a lot at the time, but this song is what finally got me to sit down and watch it.
I had started with the manga, so I then got to really appreciate just how well the anime expanded off of the snail’s pace of the 4 comic. It made me realize just how mighty the anime really is. The creators’ sheer determination to shape it into something people would enjoy runs deep through every aspect of the show, and that’s what makes it such high quality.
Not to mention that it depicts real life. What had surprised me the most were how realistic the octopus rice crackers in Enoshima on the screen were, that scene alone made me feel like I was watching live-action instead of anime. Also the scenery of Shimokitazawa city and the guitar section of the music store and stuff. It made me go “Hey I’ve been there before”.  When you actually know the city, it makes you wonder if maybe the girls really are out there in the city rocking out somewhere. That’s the level of attention to detail we’re talking with this show. The part I especially empathized with while watching was Bocchi-chan’s mentality, the way her mind works. Her mental struggle with people; the way she afraid of certain things when it comes to interacting with people… It all really hit home. I would never my crawl into a garbage pail or hide under a cardboard box to perform as she did but, the meta portrayal in scenes made me realize that I too may shelter my heart.
I’ve always been not so great at talking with people but, I’ve always enjoyed standing up in front of a crowd more. So concerts are nothing but a joy for me. That’s the difference between Bocchi and I. Though it’s true that playing guitar in the comfort of your own home versus performing on stage are two totally different worlds. There’s some things on guitar you can only play at home for some wild reason. I find that skills I’m technically capable of will, for some reason, just refuse to show themselves on stage. Possibly because when you’re aware that you’re standing up in front of an audience, along with the subsequent necessity to align yourself with them and the other performers, it all impacts your performance in a strange way. Bocchi-chan was stressed over this at first too, and I understand her sentiment deeply. I was like “I feel you!”.
After receiving advice from others did Bocchi-chan slowly but surely begin to find her own style and put her own twist on things- this part was really so much like what happens with real bands. By doing music with others do you actually reflect on yourself more. In my case, I was under the impression that I was the best guitarist in the world back when I first joined Hitorie. There, my bandmates politely told me that I needed to practice more, and I realized that in order to adapt to this band I would need to put much more effort in. My naivety chipped away at me. There’s so many things that you’ll never understand simply by mulling all by yourself. It’s all more the reason why doing things with others is so beautiful. That’s the epitome of bands if you ask me.
The most impactful episode to me was episode 8, when Kessoku Band had their very first concert. It was all going downhill, and I was thinking to myself “Been there, done that”. The bass drum flipping over during the intro was so realistic, merely listening to it made me feel nervous, yet then to flip the tables did Bocchi-chan improvise and rip out an ad lib guitar solo. Just wow that was so cool! Bocchi-chan’s talent and potential of which she was never able to unleash alongside the band finally awakened. It was so cool that I cried just watching. I can tell the people making the show have an abnormal amount of passion, they make us viewers feel as if they’re watching an actual living breathing band in action, and it’s just incredible.
Also the music itself is purely and simply great too. Mitsui-san had mentioned in an interview at some point that he had purposely wrote the songs with fewer notes. He refused to use instruments other than the ones the characters use, and he eschewed from letting instruments drown each other out as much as possible. And the fruits of his efforts turned the album “Kessoku Band” into a single collection of an unbelievable amount of electric guitar. Just last year was there discourse and theories on the internet about how guitar had become obsolete and unwanted. Because many artists are skipping the guitar solo and stuff. Yet this album pays no heed to such and is just a raw unadulterated masterpiece of rock.
When I see albums like this take the number 1 spot in rankings, it makes me realize just how much of a farce discourse on the internet is. I’m sure there’s people out there whose interest in rock bands was piqued after watching the anime but, I want people to take this opportunity to start forming their own bands and come on down to see some shows as well. Also, if the anime is going to continue on into the future then I would love the chance to be a part of it. Please let me write a song for ‘Bocchi the Rock!’!
————————————————————
Takamura Yoshihide from BLUE ENCOUNT:
Our bassist, Tsujimura (Yuuta), had told me about “a cool anime” he had seen, and that’s what got me to watch it. I had spotted the name in Twitter trends prior but I was sitting on the fence, like “It must be good if people are talking about it, maybe I should watch it too”. Then only once I saw the incredible quality of the first episode did I too get hooked.
Bocchi-chan’s shut-in tendencies and negative vibes were striking. Such as playing guitar in her closet, or getting so depressed that she sunk into a trash can. Nobody in real life would actually go to such lengths, yet that's exactly why the exaggerations were so impactful. This kind of thing is only possible in anime, and I love it when people use extremes to portray. Not only does is it exciting to watch, but they painted the scenery of Shimokitazawa so vividly and realistically that it brought back memories of back when we were in indie band and we performed there ourselves. Between the year 2010 and 2011, we were constantly performing at a venue called Shimokitazawa ReG. Not many people came to see us back then but, when we opened for KISD the tickets sold out off of reservations alone. I was thrilled, yet then on the day of the show only about half the people showed up. So in episode 8 when due to a storm people who payed for tickets didn’t show up, it really struck a chord. Plus, there really are people who only show interest in the band they came to see, and don’t so much as bat an eye at the other. And how to attract their attention is the number one struggle of an indie band. Playing a guitar solo to do so, as Bocchi did, is one orthodox method. I myself jumped down on to the floor once (he laughs). I just wanted the audience to at least look at one of us, so I just desperately threw myself out there. That’s why I personally really understood how the girls on stage must’ve felt too.
The other part which left a huge impression on me was Hiroi Kikuri. Ordinarily she’s just another sake-loving drunk, yet when she gets up on stage does her other charismatic side show its colors. I think they really hit the nail on the head with this. People whose livelihood is a tad off from the humdrum; people whose sensibilities are a bit strange, they can still become a star. That so the impression I got. They may have exaggerated it, but I do believe this was the kind of message they were aimimg to express.
Also, for indie bands and amateurs, are the managers of livehouses actually big people in their lives. So I thought the fact that they included a relationship between Kessoku Band and a livehouse manager, Seika, was great. The first livehouse manager to ever support us was someone by the name of Kumamoto B.9 Fukuda-san. Unlike in the anime though, he was a big scary dai-senpai who made chills run down my spine whenever I saw him (laughs). Yet, it was until later did I learn that behind the scenes he had actually been looking out for us, had been taking care of things for our band, and had gotten us a lot of connections. It’s really thanks to people like him that bands are able to grow, slowly but surely. Having someone close who supports you is just so important.
The interesting but difficult part of being in a band is that you’re a bunch of different people all striving for the same goals. Each member of Kessoku Band has such unique personality, they’re all enjoyable, and I must say, that they start off with such a high level of musical ability. Bocchi-chan is absolutely incredible at guitar, and the other 3 are way past the high school level. We could never have held a torch to them back when we were in high school ourselves (laugh). Yet unfortunately throughout my life I’ve seen my fair fill of players whom may be incredibly skilled individually and yet never make it as a band. When it comes down to the aspects that aren’t just raw technique, they run into a wall, such as the struggles involved in creating something together with other people, or the questions posed about how to make their concerts a success. The difficulties and challenges involved in being a band, they’re all represented in episode 12. And that’s what made it feel so realistic. Getting emotional and snapping at each other mid-concert, snapping their guitar strings.. By getting through it bit by bit did Kessoku Band’s concerts improve bit by bit too. All the little things add up and make bands grow.
With that said, if you were to compare Bocchi-chan in episode 1 to her in episode 12, it’s evident that she hasn’t changed much. And I love that. Her shyness is part of her core personality, it wouldn’t just change overnight. Just performing a concert at a shool festival won’t turn your whole world upside down, the next day is just any other old day, and that’s the end of it. I absolutely loved how that was the ending for the show. Despite life not dramatically changing, obtaining a single, small valuable experience may just impact one’s mentality and the way one interacts with the world even just a teensy tiny bit. That’s why it felt so relatable, and natural to watch.
I haven’t read the manga yet so I have no idea what will happen next but, if it’s to follow the same patterns as other classic media then I’d imagine they’ll strive to become mainstream. However, I’m also interested in just seeing more of whatever antics the gang gets up to at school and at the livehouses.
————————————————————
Takeuchi Kiyoka:
Strolling down the streets of Shimokitazawa, passing by a giant merchandise store on her way to a concert venue, Goto Hitori. As soon as she arrived at her destination “STARRY” did her face turn pale, as she internally screamed the words “Is this hell on Earth…? “. The venue “STARRY” of which Kessoku Band makes their base of operations is modeled after the real life venue “Shimokitazawa SHELTER”. When I first entered SHELTER I too had shared the same sentiment as Hitori going down that dark stairwell in the first episode. The accuracy astonished me.
The anime is stuffed with countless moments, spectacles, and sights of which anybody who’s interested in bands has surely seen in their life at least once. The streets of Shimokitazawa are obvious but, the insides of SHELTER were even depicted with such detailed accuracy. From the stairwell when you first enter, to the big clock, the wall covered to the corners in band posters, and the arched steel pipe chasing the walls. In reality the steel pipes are a blackish color while the anime instead opted for an eye-catching red, plus the size of the backstage area is slightly different but, even though they did switch things up a bit for the sake of the anime, the overall faithful re-creation and the sincere delicate process with which they made it is just pouring out of the screen.
The home base of the alcoholic rocker Hiroi Kikuri, Shinjuku FOLT, too is lovingly modeled after the existing venue, Shinjuku LOFT. The black and white checkerboard floors, the screen veiling the stage, the stage passes plastered across the backstage walls- they’re all sure to evoke a strong sense of familiarity for anyone whom has ever been there. Countless anime have been incorporating real life places into their stories over the years but, what makes ‘Bocchi the Rock!’ unique is that they potray the places and environments surrounding Japanese band culture with minute detail. There’s never before been a “band anime” that explained about how livehouses are treated as restaurants, or about their ticket quota. They don’t merely display a place, they go the extra mile to depict the various affairs and experiences which accompany band life. That’s what gives the show such a high resolution, that’s why it feels as if the members of Kessoku Band are drawing breath before you.
Things may be adapted for the animation but, a reality that brings real life and entertainment together is truly within ‘Bocchi the Rock!’. So I can’t help but wonder if maybe the girls are out there rehearsing in a studio right now, or maybe they’re off doing some part time work somewhere, or what if they’re planning their set list for their next show- these flights of fantasies of mine just naturally take off. Yet more so then anything, do I think this. To a livehouse I want to go, to a concert.

Related interview bits:
ygarshy: For me, I start by going “Let me make what I like”. So in regards to this album
Shinoda: ygarshy only wrote one song on the album this time around, but he’s written a bunch of awesome songs in the past.
- ‘Quit.’ by ygarshy is a ballad style song. Similar to ygarshy’s other song on ‘REAMP’, ‘Image’ is the melody beautiful.
ygarshy: Thank you. I only noticed the recurrence of ballad afterwards (laughs). All I did was make what I wanted to make.
- The lyrics Shinoda wrote “Bruise” are so powerful as well. Did you converse at all in regards to the lyrics?
Shinoda: When it comes to my bandmates’ songs, I often think about them while writing. I made a rule for myself that I have to write lyrics that I think they’d enjoy. Same thing with ‘Quit.’, I was like “I bet ygarshy would love this and that”.
ygarshy: I found them amazing (laughs). I wanted to make something which felt like the end of something or a season since the beginning. It’s sad but, you also have soft feelings and appreciation for the bygones. I may have told him “I want it like that.” but not to a T. He made a story out of it all on his own, I was impressed. ~~~~~
- Tell me about ‘Quit.’, the finale of the album. ygarshy’s songs are often so emotional, they make you want to cry.
Shinoda: I made it with the intention of making people cry (laughs).
ygarshy: I imagined it as being in that same frame of mind as when you’re in a stage of change. When something ends you naturally feel sad and lonely. Yet, I think that as long as you loved the experiences you earned, are you filled with joy and gratitude as well. I hoped that the melody could embody those complex emotions.
- Did you tell that to Shinoda?
ygarshy: I didn’t.
Shinoda: He didn’t say anything to me (laughs).
- Though Shinoda still managed to put that into the lyrics.
ygarshy: Yes, it surprised me. I had the image of the end of summer in mind when I wrote the music, and then Shinoda coincidentally sung “Nevertheless does summer come for you”.
Shinoda: I kinda know what lyrics are bound to please ygarshy, y’see (laughs). People who get charmed by something and then at full speed run straight ahead, they just live life in such a beautiful way. And this is something I believe rock music is all about. That moment when your passion peaks is like a “summer” in my mind. I’m too old to experience it ever again, but “you” can. That’s the message I wanted this song to send.

- Yumao wrote the song ‘Deneikaiki’, correct.
Yumao: ‘Kaze, Hana’ and ‘Stereo Juvenile’ were both set to make it into the album, so at first it was uncertain if I’d need to even make another song. But it was framing me as though I can only write upper songs, so I wanted to make a chill song too. Then when I showed my chill draft to the gang, they wanted to record it as is, no adjustments. I was happy they liked it! Then while we were mixing it I mentioned that I wanted to make it electro-y. Shinoda replied “Got it, I’ll give it a go,” and so did it end up as pretty much exactly as what you can hear now.
- It may be electro, but the drums and the beats are extraordinarily powerful. It's medium tempo but still manages to be an upper.
Yumao: It surprised me. The drums are going boom boom and it’s intense, ain’t this just an upper! It started off with me just wondering “Where will this song fit”, then turned into “What even is this song”. I was supposed to be all concerned with finding balance for myself, but in the end I found that I was actually making something which appeals to our Hitorie audience. This is just an afterthought but... I’m so happy that I wrote this song, and I’m so happy that it turned out the way it did. We’re all just doing whatever the heck we want, and it’s great.
Shinoda: You gave me quite the surprise with it.
Yumao: Yeah. I surprised myself (laughs).
Via https://www.barks.jp/news/?id=1000221169. -What was Return to Video like at the early stages?
Yumao: Both of the verses are chill and then the chorus hits like” bazing!”, right. Yet originally the chorus was similar to the verses. Then when we decided that it would make it to the album, it all changed. I thought I got the point across that I wanted it to be chill but, before long it started changing into something fizzling and crackling, I was so confused. Like “Should I really be smacking the drums this much?”, I was doubting myself while we were recording.
Shinoda: ‘Cause the mood of the song is unlike anything Hitorie’s done before, I thought “If this took shape it’d be real cool.”. When we entered the mixing stage did Yumao give me the small request of “Electro’d be good.”, and managed to completely twist his words. I chugged synth into it like crazy.
Yumao: I envisioned it as like more soft electro, more minimalistic.
ygarshy: The softer type, right? But instead it’s more like the “E” from EDM.
Yumao: We had a mixup with our definitions of electro (laugh).
- The lyric “I sprug off my videographic soles” is wonderful.
Shinoda: I actually needed to rewrite the lyrics over once. They were pretty crazy before, yeah?
Yumao: Yeah. I had no idea what on Earth you were saying (laugh). It was more middle schooler-ish. He asked me “What kinda lyrics do you want?” so I said “I don’t mind if the meaning of the lyrics are unclear, I just would like you to put in catchy words that have a nice definition and feel to them.” But then the lyrics he wrote made no sense to me (laughs).
Shinoda: I was into Nishio Ishin at the time, so I think his stuff affected me a bit too much. It’s no wonder why I was hit with disapproval (laughs). Via https://natalie.mu/music/pp/hitorie06/page/2.
- The scope of genres is so broad in this album. ‘Genogenoge’ is hard guitar rock with a huge chunk of the classic Japanese style, while ‘Deneikaiki’ is electro, you’d never think they’re written by the same band.
Shinoda: Maybe (laughs). I think it’s great when one album has a lot of different music.
Yumao: I think that ‘Genogenoge’ sounds like a Hitorie song, while ‘Deneikaiki’ is pretty different. I wrote the song but, after I passed the WIP version over to Shinoda did it turn into an entirely different mix (laughs). While we were recording I kept saying “What is this?” as well.
ygarshy: Yumao was troubled the whole time, it was hilarious (laughs).
Shinoda: I felt guilty that I made him feel uneasy (laughs).

Via https://www.barks.jp/news/?id=1000221169. - Genogenoge has such a unique style to it. The melody is like classic Japanese yet it also makes you want to do the Cossack dance, it’s its own genre unbound by nations.
Shinoda: When the melody popped into my head I was like “Something incredible just dawned on me.” (Laughs). I went way too wild and had too much fun with it, but I still held onto it because I wanted the gang to hear it. Yet then they enjoyed it way more than I ever expected them to, and so it turned out the way it did.
-You went wild but that’s what makes it cool.. That’s one of the key components of the makings of Hitorie, if you ask me.
Shinoda: Though I don’t think we’ve ever gone quite this wild before (laughs). But it went well. Hear the melody once and you’ll never forget it.
-It’s the type of song kids will innocently hum. I can already imagine 3 year olds at daycare singing and dancing Genogenoge, freaking out their teachers. A sight to behold.
Shinoda: That’d be amazing (laughs). I'm not actually saying anything valid in the song after all.
-The slap bass comes in at phenomenal moments as well, it feels so good to listen to.
ygarshy: Shinoda told me "Do this" so (laughs). It's unlike anything a bassist would devise, the track is like producing its very own stage set all on it's own.
- It's cultivating an ensemble different from the typical rock band.
Shinoda: I'd agree. The idea for the song was to make techno. But with guitar, drums, and bass as the base: a fresh type of techno pop. "I don't really get it but, let's make something easy to get." we said. Sudden slap bass, drum solo parts... We basically took the approach of putting a bunch of samples in.
- So, it’s similar to DTM.
Shinoda: DTM played a big role in this album. For this song, I wanted to cater to nonsensical stuff from beginning to end. In regards to the lyrics as well, I wanna tell myself "You really have such chutzpah huh, to make the lyrics such an incessant slew of meaningless junk" (laughs).

Hitorie(ヒトリエ) - Neon Beauty - English Translation
One swipe to warp my views Beside my field of view is that girl in a doze From one corner of my neurons astir, 端まで駆け巡るあの子 to the other corner, is that girl all throughout 言葉にしてしまえば If I ever dare put my feelings into words then The radio tower will get covered in crows I’m on the verge of getting abducted away Black hair touches upon the universe
Yep, do you understand? You wanna paint it all red, don't cha I’m sure that won’t look good on you, I’m sure that won’t look good on you.
Cooking bread with the heat which set a dull heart aflame While listening to some boring chatter, I bite into a piece Surrounded by liquid crystal, we’ve no where left to run. I'm gonna be abducted away We’re not unwinding our entwined fingers, No matter where we go, we’re idiots

つまらない話を聞きながらそれに齧りつく これは前段の<くだらない心を燃やした熱でパンを焼く> “While listening to some boring chatter, I bite into a piece” This is referring to the bread in the previous line, “Cooking bread with the heat which set a dull heart aflame”.
The line is written so well that I couldn’t come up with any word that could beat “boring(tsumaranai)”, which also rhymed with kudaranai. あとパン食ってる時に聞こえてくる話なんて大体つまらないじゃないですか(そんなことはない) Also the kind of chat you hear whilst eating bread is usually the boring kind, ain’t it (Don’t listen to me).
By Shinoda.
Shinoda: Neon Beauty doesn’t stray at all from the pop genre. Also Yumao and ygarshy both make beautiful melodies, but, but.. That makes me jealous. “I can write better melodies than them, hmph!”, I said, and jealousy pushed me to write this song as kinda like my bold front.
Yumao: (laughs).
Yumao: I had no idea.
ygarshy: It’s a great song.
Yumao: Yeah, it’s great.
Shinoda: ‘Course it is, ‘cause my melodies are way more awesome than yours.
ygarshy: You’re exactly right.
Yumao: Yeah.
Shinoda: What, that was easy. You gave up so fast (laughs).
Via: https://www.barks.jp/news/?id=1000221169
- The sheer character of each and every song on PHARMACY is incredible. ‘Neon Beauty’ for example lures me straight into an electro high.
Shinoda: At first I thought “I wanna make a song like Utada Hikaru’s stuff”
Shinoda “Yeah. ‘BAD MODE’ is what inspired me but, it steered way off (laugh). The decayed and decadent style lyrics were influenced by the hit game ‘NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE’, which came out this year.
- The lyrics “If I ever dare put my feelings into words then/The radio tower will get covered in crows” truly produce that decayed and decadent atmosphere.
Shinoda: I feel like it’s also like longing for the 90’s subculture.
- ‘Evangelion’ etc. would have a scene like this.
Shinoda: I can never let go of my childhood experiences of meeting cool things. The lyrics may also be kinda like me going “Nerds love this stuff, right?” (laughs). I made dirty techno with ‘Genogenoge’ so then I wanted to make something clean, and so we got ‘Neon Beauty’.
Yumao: Musically this song is so catchy too. I noticed that something we all agree on is that among everything in the album, this song is fantastic.
ygarshy: I also really love “Neon Beauty”.
Yumao: I love the vibes of the synth, and ygarshy’s bass is super awesome too.
ygarshy: I’m actually a big fan of the bass in the song too.
- The first half of PHARMACY is so dance music, and Neon Beauty fits into that perfectly. I can just imagine people on the floor dancing. Hitorie may be a rock band to the core, but you manage to hook up with club music well.
Shinoda: The music festivals we’ve been too could be called dance movements in a way, so.
- When people say “Rock you can dance to.” most people think of 4/4 beats, and it especially applies to J-rock. Yet Hitorie doesn't limit themselves to that.
ygarshy: That's true, I think. We've learned how to amplify ourselves.
Yumao: 'Flashback, Francesca' and 'Neon Beauty' especially make me feel like "We've grown up".
- If this style spread to other bands in the country, it'd be such a joy if you ask me. Dancing along to 'Neon Beauty' at an outdoor festival would be the dream.

Kids are forced to watch boring parades Yet still they smile
This is the first line of the first verse of the first song, so right off the bat I’m like Oh shit, I fucked up but 「同調出来ない」「押し付けがましい」 “I can’t vibe with this.” “It’s forced onto me” 「そもそも欲して無い」 “I never even wanted this in the first place.” is the nuance I intended “boring” to have here. Adults will often think some shit’s good and make something out of it but, deep down nobody finds that shit fucking interesting at all. Alas, if people don’t get excited over it, then they’re flamed, like “You’re messed up in the head.” So, with no alternative choice do people end up pretending to get excited. In order to clearly portray this kinda horrible picture, the word “boring” was the one I found I needed to use, even if I had wanted to avoid it.

Interviewer: You must have deliberately put Flashback, Francesca as the first track for that reason (Prior they were discussing how Hitorie wants to expand their horizons/scope of listeners). Opening up with this stylish of a song really sets the mood.
Shinoda: It’s a trap (laughs). We gotta have at least this big of a kickoff if we wanna curry people’s favor! I thought, and so dressed the song up to be all stylish and modern. I listened to PRIMAL SCREAMS’s song ‘Screamadelica’ while writing it. I wanted it to have that same kinda rave taste to it. Reviving the 90’s. I’ve listened to a lotta music in my time but, I always find myself coming back to PRIMAL SCREAM. So I stuffed the song chockful of my favorite stuff. Making my bandmates have to yield to my selfishness… Yumao even used an instrument he normally never uses for me. What was it again, a conga?
Yumao: A bongo.
Shinoda: We edited it and used it as a sample.
Yumao: It just so happened to be there in the studio we were at. A lucky find.
Interviewer: The music is so stylish, while the lyrics are so cynical.
Shinoda: I tried to sing of that specific mood of decay which places like Shinjuku Kabuki-chou have.
Interviewer: The phrase “There’s a song no one but they can hear” is so bitter.  It almost contradicts Stereo Juvenile’s “You’re the only one listening.”
Shinoda: Yeah. This line is about people who don’t listen to rock. Which is like the opposite of Stereo Juvenile. There’s music out there with a frequency my inner “antenna” can’t catch, but there’s people out there who can catch it. That’s what this line is about. Those people are alive and kicking beyond my field of view. A part of me also made it hoping that somehow someway this music will draw them in. I thought about how to get my voice, my words, my music, to reach them.
Interviewer: Why did you choose to put this song at the beginning, before the lead song “Genogenoge”?
Shinoda: This song has been around as dead stock since we were writing REAMP. But it has a nice initial feel to it, so I thought it’d be good as the first song you hear when clicking play on the album. It’s not an especially punchy song, and it lets this sorta dry air in. It’s more like a prelude than a 1st track. Then it leads into the almighty crazy song “Genogenoge” like a jack in the box. When I make a crazy song I want people to listen to, I feel it works best as the 2nd track. Then, well, “Kaze, Hana” follows that, so you can be at ease when listening.
Interviewer: “Flashback, Francesca” is like dance music merged with rock band style. Musically it’s so pleasurable, it’s unlike anything in your previous albums.
Shinoda: Back with REAMP, then totally wasn’t the right time for this song (laugh). Yet then we went on tour, did stuff, and slowly but surely the mood of the band changed. “Flashback, Francesca” has been around since our last album, but finally as a band we reached a point where we could actually release it. In regards to the music… I normally listen to a wide range on stuff but… Ultimately it’s Denki Groove and Primal Scream for me (laughs). Back during the time when I was writing “Flashback, Francesca” I was listening to a lot of “Screamdelica” by Primal Scream. I wanted to try portraying the rave style in my own way as well. So I used the number of syllables, and the type of instruments they used such as the synth strings or the conga, for reference. And made it into our very own band-y vocal song.
ygarshy: We also wanted to try new audio styles. This is 100% for my own personal interests but, I had learned that Kashiwabara Yuzuru of Fishmans has recently swapped from a vintage bass to a modern 5 string bass. So I had wanted to try that out for myself. The drums are pretty different as well.
Yumao: Yep. I used small cymbals instead of the high-hat and stuff. The style of the WIP Shinoda made sounded like “minimal music” to me, so I worked off that and changed only my sounds rather than technique.
Interviewer: Deviating from the typical Hitorie.

Hitorie - undo - Lyrics English Translation
Music and Lyrics by Shinoda
This never-ending night is just like those never-opening eyes One spoonful, on the tip of my tongue - As though I'm about to get addicted to this sweetness
I wanted that moment to be mine and mine alone It was as though everything else became useless then What pulled the trigger on my senses was-
As though going against the law of universal gravitation Your hand reaches for the moon and actually makes it 頭の中、熱くなる The inside of my head, grows hot undo undo undo My emotions are hard candies Which melt, spill all over 頬を撫で下ろす度に And whenever they stroke down my cheeks, undo undo undo Enough, unforgivable
To the nighttime which seems as though it’s brimming with such things free The tips of my fingers, weak as could be It’s as though I could almost touch it yet, see I’m still not reaching, I’m still not reaching thee To that moment I fall in love I’m still not reaching, I’m still not reaching thee To that perfect me, as though from my dreams
I feel as though I could go anywhere That’s what my gut is singing It’s as though even going against gravity is something no longer forgivable This beautiful world has been seared into my memory I wanted that moment to be mine and mine alone It was as though everything else became useless then What pulled the trigger on my senses was, that’s right…
As though going against the law of universal gravitation Your hand reaches for the moon and actually makes it 頭の中、熱くなる The inside of my head, grows hot undo undo undo My emotions are hard candies Which melt, spill all over 頬を撫で下ろす度に And whenever they stroke down my cheeks, undo undo undo Enough, unforgivable

Do you know some fact about why Shinoda named the song tittle Marshall A?
He put his boisterous Marshall Plexi amp to max volume, smashed down the A chord on his stratocaster, and with that the song was born.....
I can translate his blog post ILL DO IT BRB

(Wind, Flower) - Lyrics English Translation
Music: Yumao Lyrics: Shinoda
I hope only my crystal-clear feelings are the ones which will make it to tomorrow When then I’d likely just fall asleep and stay here forever
You can go now, the sun has just started shining Careful not to forget anything, you won’t be able to come back for it The fact that I even ever entered your sight Is like a miracle
I learned that only crystal-clear feelings are the ones which make it to tomorrow When then I likely won’t be able to stay with you anymore, so O’ our stories which never sleep If only I was a nice person like you とか思ってしまうよ I catch myself thinking
Deep down at the bottom of my heavy heart- 在り続けなきゃいけないもの there’s something I can’t be without- 今にも失くしそうな that I’m on the verge of losing 僕を飛ばすかの様に吹いた As if coming to blow me away- 悪戯めいた風が気まぐれに the wind is mischievous and moody 咲かせた花は美し過ぎた And the flowers it made bloom on a whim are much too beautiful They pierced past my eyes and into my mind, burned straight into my memory And won’t go away
Apparently only crystal-clear feelings are the ones which make it to tomorrow When then I likely won’t be able to stay with you anymore O’ our stories which will never cross again The fact that you were such a nice person to me… I’ll hold it close to my chest, and fall asleep
Notes: SND seems to use many variations of “no yo da” and “yo” across the lyrics, for the sake of melody.
