10 Comfort Movies
Thank you @alexx-dax for the tag!
In no particular order:
1. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) I have recently gained a new appreciation for this one for obvious reasons, and along with ANH and ROTJ it is one of the only movies I have downloaded for on the go viewing. It has become somewhat of a tradition that I watch ESB whenever Iβm flying home, bc thereβs something about General Veersβ wrists and Piettβs tiny hops that give me the strength to deal with the last leg of bullshit before I can finally sleep in my own bed again
2. The Avengers (2012) aka the movie I used to watch all the time in uni. Back before Marvel movies wereβ¦ like that, and there were all those βeveryone comes and lives in avengers towerβ ficsβ¦ I havenβt watched it recently, but I bought a blu-ray player specifically for the special features and to this day itβs probably the movie Iβve seen the most
3. Superman (1978) it has the right balance of cheese and heart that just makes it a good fucking movie, and while I love all of Reevesβ superman movies (yes even the bad ones) the original is still my favourite
4. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) I love all the original IJ movies, but the last crusade was my favourite even before I realized Julian Glover was in it (and looks fucking incredible in a suit)
5. Thunderball (1965) donβt @ me I love the old bond movies and thunderball is just So Insane with the wetsuitsβ’οΈ and the weird spa
6. The Lego Movie (2014) I fucking love Lego games, and this movie has all the Lego game vibes rolled up into one ridiculous movie with the catchiest song known to man
7. Godzilla vs Mothra (1992) this was my first kaiju movie, and although I have since seen many others, the tiny singing women and the giant space moth will always be my favourite. The dub is horrendous but that somehow only adds to the magic
8. Sherlock Holmes: a game of shadows (2011) Iβm sure it surprises absolutely no one to learn that I enjoy a good (subjectively) Holmes adaptation, and RDJ has the right sort of insane energy I like in my Holmes
9. Star Trek IV: the Voyage Home (1986). This was my introduction to Trek - I remember sitting at my grandparents house and my mom suggesting I watch βthe one with the whalesβ. (As a byproduct, I would not associate the Enterprise with Star Trek until years later)
10. LOTR: Extended edition (2001-2003) One does not simply watch only one LOTR movie

List 7 comfort films and tag 7 people:
uhhh I'm so bad at watching movies that I don't think I even HAVE 7 comfort movies?? blame the adhd
1. Big Eden (2000)
2. Star Trek Beyond (2016)
3. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)
those are the only three that I can think of rn that I consider comfort movies, so I shall list 4 more movies that I greatly enjoy and could have the potential to become comfort movies
- Lord of the Rings (im counting all three as one okay)
- Venom (2018)
- as weird as it sounds, Renfield (2023). it's a fun movie with a weirdly genuine theme. I had a blast
- Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)

I donβt expect this to be interesting to anyone but myself, but I made a Top10 list of my personal favorite movies as of 2022.
1. The Blues Brothers (1980, John Landis, US)
2. Donnie Darko (2001, Richard Kelly, US)
3. Mediterraneo (1991, Gabriele Salvatores, Italy)
4. Saw (2004, James Wan US)
5. Innocence (2004, Lucile Hadzihalilovic, France)
6. LΓ©on: The Professional (1994, Luc Besson, France, English spoken)
7.Β The Crow (1994, Β Alex Proyas, US)
8.Β Brazil (1985, Terry Gilliam, UK)
9. The Great Mouse Detective (1986, Disney, several directors, US)
10. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986, Leonard Nimoy, US)
I think if youβve seen all of these, you get a pretty good idea on what I find appealing in a film. A lot of these are rather, well, artsy I suppose. It looks like my sweetspot is between mid 80β²s to mid 2000β²s, and like, considering my age and the film I was exposed to the most in my formative years, thatβs not really surprising.
I am a bit disappointed that no Finnish films climbed to the Top10. They would pop up right in the next ten best things, but to be honest I cannot really put them over these ones.

Cinema Sins does βStar Trek Vβ. Itβs the only Star Trek movie that Iβve never bothered to see more than once. The Sins reminded me of just how bad it wasβ¦ shitty bad. Shatner should been banned from all future Star Trek project after this - because he nearly killed the franchise. Proceed with caution if you view thisβ¦
At this point in the franchise history, Star Trek V made the least amount of Box Office than the 4 earlier films. Not only that, it made less than half of the prior film (Voyage Home). It would take 13 years until Star Trek Nemesis was a bigger failure (and it killed of the Next Gen films).
STAR TREK 1 (TMP) 1970 - Budget $44 million - Box Office Worldwide $139 million
STAR TREK 2 (Khan) 1982 - Budget $12 million - Box Office $97 million
STAR TREK 3 (Search) 1984 - Budget $16 million - Box Office $87 million
STAR TREK 4 (Voyage Home) 1986 - Budget $21 million - Box Office $133 million
STAR TREK 5 (Final Frontier) 1989 - Budget $33 million - Box Office $63 million

There have also been numerous books, comics, and other media related to the Star Trek franchise, which has become one of the most popular and enduring science fiction franchises in history.

The last three movies, released in 2009, 2013, and 2016, are part of a rebooted Star Trek universe and feature a younger cast playing the original characters from the original series.

Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home (1986)
THE KEY TO SAVING THE FUTURE CAN ONLY BE FOUND IN THE PAST.
Itβs the 23rd century, and a mysterious alien power is threatening Earth by evaporating the oceans and destroying the atmosphere. In a frantic attempt to save mankind, Kirk and his crew must time travel back to 1986 San Francisco where they find a world of punk, pizza and exact-change buses that are as alien as anything theyβve ever encountered in the far reaches of the galaxy. A thrilling, action-packed Star Trek adventure!

Star Trek Apoliticality Hall of Fame
1967Β -Β βA Taste of Armageddonβ: Captain Kirk introduces the technocratic elites of rival worlds to the full horrors of warfare. Totally apolitical.
1968 -Β βA Private Little Warβ:Β Superpowers fight a destructive proxy war on a jungle planet; aired during the Tet Offensive. No politics here.
1969Β -Β βLet This Be Your Last Battlefieldβ:Β White-and-black guys oppress black-and-white guys until their planet is destroyed in a race war. Aired 9 months after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Politics-free.
1986Β -Β βStar Trek IV: The Voyage Homeβ:Β In this apolitical adventure, the crew of the Enterprise travels back in time to the 20th century to rescue humpbacked whales from extinction at the hands of industrial over-fishing.
1987 - 1994Β -Β βStar Trek: The Next Generationβ:Β Set in a post-scarcity communist utopia in which profit motive is looked upon as barbarous. Debuted during the Reagan Administration. Just a mindless adventure series.
1991Β -Β βStar Trek VI: The Undiscovered Countryβ:Β Two superpowers negotiate an end to their decades-long Cold War over the objections of reactionary factions in both countries. Aired 4 months after the attempted coup against Gorbachev and two weeks before the dissolution of the USSR. No politics here.
1992Β -Β βThe Outcastβ:Β The Enterprise visits a planet with only one biological sex, where a character who nevertheless identifies as a woman is forced to undergo conversion therapy. Released at the height of the AIDS epidemic. Mercifully free of politics.
1993 - 1999 -Β βStar Trek: Deep Space Nineβ:Β This politics-devoid series, which coincidentally aired during the Balkan Wars, follows a group of Federation observers who are assigned to guide the recovery of a war-torn planet.
1995Β -Β βPast Tense, Parts 1 and 2β³: Sisko, Bashir, and Dax take an apolitical trip back in time to an austerity- and inequality-ravaged early-twenty-first-century America on the cusp of revolutionary class violence, where despairing poor people are locked in ghettos whilst theyΒ βlook for workβ.
1996Β -Β βBar Associationβ: The employees of Quarkβs Bar strike against exploitation by their employer; Rom literally quotes Karl Marx to his brother (in a wholly apolitical fashion).
2000Β -Β βCritical Careβ: The Doctor is abducted and forced to work in a horrifying, dystopian hospital where quality care and competent medics are reserved for the rich and well-to-do whilst the poor are left to bleed in an over-crowded, septic, dingy little room. Any resemblance to the American healthcare system is purely coincidental.
2001Β -Β βRepentenceβ: Voyager finds itself needing to escort a bunch of alien deathrow prisoners to their execution, but finds that there is an entirely apolitical racial bias in who gets sentences in this fashion, and also that many of the murderers are not beyond reform.
2001:Β βBroken Bowβ: Airing three weeks after 9/11, this apolitical episode finds Starfleet in conflict with a cabal of terrorists known as the Taliban Suliban.
2004:Β βThe Forgeβ,Β βAwakeningβ, and βKirβSharaβ: A corrupt Vulcan government cracks down on pacifist dissidents and tries to instigate a war against with Andoria through bogus accusations that they are developing weapons of mass destruction. Aired in that lovely, politics-free aftermath of the US invasion of Iraq.
...Anyways, I could go on, but I think Iβve made my point:Β Star trek was always completely apolitical until Alex Kurtzman ruined it. If only they could return to the mindless, action-packed romp that Gene Roddenberry had always intended.

TREKMATCH! # 640 - 1986's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home vs 1976's Rocky
ROCKY
A nice yet dim guy is schlubbing around Philly sorta boxing but mainly beating people up for a loan shark whenever the world heavyweight champ asks him for a bout. Well of course he's gonna do that even if he's got no chance - cue training montage! In a big boxing match like that even the loser gets a few hundred thou so sure, I'd let some pro beat me up for that kinda bread. The movie is mainly about him trying to woo a nerdy pet store clerk though so that's sweet.
GRADE: A-
STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME
On their way back to Earth in their stolen Klingon ship to stand trial for stealing/exploding the Enterprise, our favorite space bunch gets a distress call from... Earth???? Uh oh! It turns out a giant cigar is tearing up the oceans and transmitting noise. Well, as we all know, it's looking for its BFFs the humpback whales, who've been extinct since the 21st Century. Time for a little time travel romp! This is everybody who doesn't like Star Trek's favorite Star Trek. I do like it a lot, even more than Rocky, but it's not really a better movie than Rocky by any metric.
GRADE: B+
Victory to Rocky, so movies are up 321-319!
That's the last of the Original Movies, and they wind up winning 4-2!

Mellon. Do have any recommendations for the right way/order to watch all the Star Trek shows/movies? I've watched all the reboot movies and a few episodes from TOS, but I want to watch everything in the way that makes the most sense. Also, thanks for your response on my post. Your insight is really interesting!
Hello Friend!!!!!!!!!!
Glad you liked my response on your post! :)
In regards to Star Trek, thereβs different ways to go about watching it depending on your personal preference.
Firstly though, just to make sure you know, theΒ βreboot moviesβ probably familiarized you with the fact that those movies take place in an alternate timeline (The Kelvin Timeline) that diverged from the Prime Timeline in the year 2233, the Prime Timeline is where all the other shows and films take place and is generally theΒ βmainβ timeline of the Star Trek universe.
So thereβs generally two ways someone can watch Star Trek, release order or in-universe chronological order.
Release Order is where you watch it by the order of when the shows or films were released; in this way, you have an understanding of the meta history of the franchise as youβll have seen things in the same way that a fan from the 60s saw everything in the franchise, meaning when more recent shows or movies drop easter eggs or references to older shows or films, youβre not missing them because youβve seen what theyβre referencing to. For example, say a new show is set in the year 2256 and it references or calls back to an older showβs story plot set about a decade later in the year 2267, if you watch it in release order, then youβd get the wider context of the references. Some shows were released concurrently with other shows or movies, Iβll try to separate them in the best viewing way.
Release Order: (anything bolded is a film)
The Original Series (1966-1969) - includingΒ βThe Cageβ which was the rejected/unaired pilot made in 1965, this will be the first episode if you have access on Netflix
The Animated Series (1973-1974)
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock (1984)
Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home (1986)
Star Trek: The Next Generation Seasons 1 and 2 (1987-1989)
Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier (1989)
Star Trek: The Next Generation Seasons 3 and 4 (1989-1991)
Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country (1991)
Star Trek: The Next Generation Seasons 5 to 7 (1991-1994)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Seasons 1 and 2 (1993-1994)
Star Trek: Generations (1994)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Seasons 3 and 4 (1994-1996)
Star Trek: Voyager Seasons 1 and 2 (1995-1996)
Star Trek: First Contact (1996)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Seasons 5 and 6 (1996-1998)
Star Trek: Voyager Seasons 3 and 4 (1996-1998)
Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Season 7 (1998-1999)
Star Trek: Voyager Seasons 5 to 7 (1998-2001)
Star Trek: Enterprise Season 1 (2001-2002)
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
Star Trek: Enterprise Seasons 2 to 4 (2002-2005)
Star Trek (2009)
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Star Trek: Discovery (2017-)
Star Trek: Short Treks (2018-2020)
Star Trek: Picard (2020-Present)
Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020-Present)
Star Trek: Prodigy (not aired yet)
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (not aired yet)
-------------------------------------------
There is also the in-universe chronological order where you can watch in the order of when a show or film takes place in the story universe; in this way, you can experience the story fromΒ βbeginningβ toΒ βendβ without having to always re-orient yourself on where in the timeline you are now, though I putΒ βbeginningβ andΒ βendβ in quotations because since this is an active universe, new shows or films could be prequels or sequels or taking place concurrently. Also, with the many concurrent shows and films, I try to separate them in a way that preserves the story focus.
In-Universe Chronological Order: (anything bolded is a film)
Star Trek: EnterpriseΒ
The Cage unaired pilot - attached to The Original Series as the first episode on Netflix
Star Trek: Discovery Season 1Β
Star Trek: Short Treks Season 1 episodes: The Runaway, The Brightest Star, The Escape Artist
Star Trek: Discovery Season 2
Star Trek: Short Treks Season 2 episodes: Q&A, The Trouble With Edward, Ask Not, The Girl Who Made The Stars
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (not aired yet)
Star Trek: The Original SeriesΒ
Star Trek: Short Treks Season 2 episode: Ephraim and Dot
Star Trek: The Animated Series
Star Trek: The Motion PictureΒ
Star Trek 2: The Wrath of KhanΒ
Star Trek 3: The Search for SpockΒ
Star Trek 4: The Voyage HomeΒ
Star Trek 5: The Final FrontierΒ
Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek: The Next GenerationΒ
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek: First Contact
Star Trek: Deep Space NineΒ
Star Trek: Insurrection
Star Trek: Voyager
Star Trek: Nemesis
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 1 (and upcoming Season 2)
Star Trek: Prodigy (not aired yet)
Star Trek: Short Treks Season 2 episode: Children of Mars
Star Trek: 2009 - parts of this movie addresses events of the Prime Timeline, from here on out you could watch the Kelvin Timeline stories Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond if you want
Star Trek: Picard Season 1 (and upcoming Season 2)
Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 (and upcoming Season 4)
Star Trek: Short Treks Season 1 episode: CalypsoΒ
------------------------------------------
I hope I havenβt confused you too much!Β
I know the lists could seem daunting, but to be honest, there is really noΒ βrightβ way to watch Star Trek, people have all come into the franchise from various different points and levels of knowledge. But if you do want to watch in a way that generally makes sense, then release order or in-universe chronological order are the best ways to experience the story in different ways depending on what ways suit you better.
Please feel free to message me in private messaging if you want to further chat about how you want to go about watching all the shows and films, Iβd be more than happy to help explain any other questions these lists might have prompted or clarify anything that might have confused you.
Hope this helps! :)
