Devlog Prelude 2

So nothing has really started so far aside from beginning to learn C# through Codecademy and learning more about unity. With that said, I am currently looking into an engine called Corgi Engine (Apparently it was used for Rogue Legacy 2 which is neat)

In my time learning Game Maker, way before yoyo games was ever a thing, the community really drove into me that using another persons engine was akin to cheating and it's kind of a bad mind set I need to break because it couldn't be further from the truth. So many studios use engines so I do not know why there I feel so much shame around that idea even though logic dictates there is nothing wrong with it.

Bummer mindset aside it honestly looks really powerful and has a lot of tools that I may or may not end up using! The gravity options especially look fun but currently I have no plans for an area that would make use of them. Still, tons of cool features.

In terms of stuff relating to the game I actually found an old sketch up I did of the main character, Kero, and figured I would throw it up here. This was sketched when I was toying around with GBStudio so she was drawn with glasses here but you get to see her freckles again. I plan to relatively soon re-draw her so I can get some good references to work with. (Note, I am not an artist XD)

Aside from that, currently sick with a cold (So far Covid Negative, knock on wood that does not change) and so will have plenty of time at my desk to work on stuff as the Work from Home workload of my job is pretty light right now.

Anyway, not much of a large update but just wanted to get a little bit out there. Catch you for the next Dev Log. I plan to continue to do "Preludes" until actual game development starts.

Meme Guardians.

I just got a bit of an alternative lesson today.

A history lesson.

And before you say "Weren't you a tour guide?"

I specialized in Heros and Myths, and the meme Guardians falls more into the history of civil service. I knew some parts. but not as much as I do now.

Here is an abridged history that SMG4 told me.

Around the dawn of the first piece of artwork. There were always people trying to take advantage of said art.

This is where the first Guardian was established.

The Supreme Hyrogriphic Guardian 1 and 2.

Then other pieces of art throughout history were established.

The Supreme Painting Guardians 1 through 5

The Supreme Animation Guardian 1 throgh 22

The Supreme Video Game Guardian 1 and 2

And the most recent chapter that was established (in the early 80s).

There was this subspace (like a pocket dimension within a universe) was a game called Mage or something where two guys played.

It's kind of hard to follow.

But like I think one of the guys kill each other and something happened. I kind of didn't understand.

But later on there was this game called Spudnik. And two beings manifested from its code to create SMG1 and SMG2. They are other meme guardians. They're the ones who do most of the Guarding of the memes.

Eventually in the 90s. There was this guy born called Luke.

I think I've already told his story around like a year ago when I went to sarasaland to see the War of the Fat Italians.

But long story short. Luke found a USB outside of his home in Australia, his brother Kevin went with him to the Mushroom Kingdom where they landed. Something about the USB caused the corruption.

Later on. They meant this guy called SMG3. I don't really know that much about him other than the fact that he handles the meme graveyard and he was SMG4's rival at one point.

Note to self, I should have visited the meme graveyard during the whole Warp Point fiasco.

So that's pretty much an abridged history of the meme guardians.

I'm pretty sure you can find a much better history out there on the internet or on Your Tube

But hey. I mostly did this just to write down about an organization for an assignment.

This is my yearly written assignment and technically a sequel to that mushroom classification paper I did.

Family: Mom, Dad, two older brothers (both med school students)

Pets: Spud (short for Spudnik), her emotional support dog

Diagnoses: autism spectrum disorder, AD/HD, anxiety, sensory processing disorder

Background:

Piper grew up surrounded by doctors of all kinds. Her mom’s a nutrition specialist, her dad’s a brain surgeon, and her two older brothers are in med school. Because of her diagnoses, her parents underestimate Piper and provide her with more assistance than she’s comfortable with. She’s constantly having to prove herself to everyone, but her parents don’t always recognize her accomplishments. They insisted on getting her an emotional support animal despite her insisting that she doesn’t need one, and they got her one anyway. It’s all very frustrating for her.

Piper wants to be an oncologist one day. She’s wanted to treat people with cancer ever since one of her classmates in kindergarten had to leave school after being diagnosed with leukemia. When she told her parents about her dream, they suggested she start small and volunteer at the local hospital to get a better sense of what cancer patients have to go through. As soon as she started high school, Piper did exactly that. She joined a volunteer organization that allowed her to spend her weekends cheering up cancer patients in the pediatric ward. She plays video games with them and tells them stories where they’re the heroes. She does anything she can to bring a smile to their faces.

I know, I know, we have sooooo many goldens. Some people love them 🙋‍♀️ while others don't. I thought it might be fun to play a little "Guess the Golden" game though with all the goldens currently here. Can you put the names to the faces? Even though all golden is golden, there is a huge variance in the colour and quality of golden. As breeder, we are consciously making choices about how we want genes like golden to express in further generations. I love a nice dark golden, though this isn't seen often in North America. Spudnik brought us some amazingly lovely genes though and subsequently many of his pups and grandpups are pretty dark! Hopefully with more time I'll be breeding rich, dark goldens. Until then, the large variety of golden colours can help with identifying these friends. As you can see some are significantly darker than others. Lol! Thank you! I really wish the games would’ve given us a bigger glimpse of art in the Mass Effect universe than just a stroll through a Bond villain’s vault of ill-gotten pieces. But they didn’t, so that means we get to make it up for ourselves :D

In my core though, I really strongly believe there is no "default" shep. It is SO important that this character - as she or he functions in the game - be a lens through which the player may project themselves, and thus, connect with the characters and universe. "canon" interepretations just fuck that up, and all that gets further complicated in fan works, which take on all their own rules and regs depening on what fantasy is being fulfilled.

I completely relate to the urge to have one “default” character to use consistently for the purpose of fic and art, even if your playable character is different (like it is for me -- I usually use Marian in fic/meta but further break down her character in “my headcanon realm” and turn that Hawke into my OC) but somehow even knowing that it’s always default femshep that I just can’t get over lmao.

there are some things that I do think make the most narrative sense for some of these protagonists to be, based on narrative and contextual clues of the story: Hawke as a mage, Inquisitor as a human (who else would embrace the Herald of Andraste thing so easily) or an elf (with all the elf history and Solas stuff). and that’s absolutely not to say OCs who don’t fit that are wrong (like, rogue!Hawke is my all time favorite class and background). but there’s a lot about Shepard that opens itself equally to all of the six backgrounds they make available, and of course you could headcanon one or a combination make the most, but ultimately they don’t have much influence on the story or the depth of Shepard’s character (save except for Arrival, if you had colonist and/or ruthless background). anyway all of this is to say I agree with you, though I would be willing to fight BW in a dark alley over my belief that it makes way more sense thematically, if not within the confines of their own world building, for Hawke and Shepard to be moc or woc

that is a really good point and now I’m surprised I didn’t connect these dots sooner, but now that you mention it I’ve been thinking a lot about how human centrist movements almost undoubtedly stem from white supremacist movements (not just in the sense that the BW team copies their language to write Cerberus propaganda, but also in that I literally believe white supremacists would’ve started human-first movements in the ME ‘verse, and it makes complete symbolic sense to me that Cerberus is being run by an old-fashioned older white man with a genetically-engineered-to-be-perfect white woman as his right hand). running with that, I’d think that puts POC!Shepard’s relationship with Cerberus on thin fucking ice (especially if they’re a sole survivor like my Shep) and to me that’s another avenue to explore, like, what does it say about Shep that they agree to work with them anyway? but also, POC!Shep is now put in an infuriating and compromising position working with terrorists, that would undoubtedly color her relationship with TIM and probably also Miranda, at least until she gained her trust or defected.

on one hand I can understand preferring to cover this in codex entries and side notes in a video game because the main plot is an alien race attacking, not human sociopolitics, but also... if you present a status quo for the human race that differs from today, you should engage with it a bit. like, in one codex entry in kasumi’s loyalty they mention a second american civil war being fought over the usa expanding to include canada and mexico. i guaran-fucking-tee you a major trigger for that war would’ve been due to confederate loyalists and racism against mexicans. and yet we don’t see it mention of it ever again, lol.

as for BW using that canon as a cop-out, that’s true too. it always seemed to me that ME1 had more poc NPCs, and even though we got more with Sam and Steve, by ME2 and 3 the NPCs you don’t interact with were mostly white again. I feel like they addressed this somewhat in Andromeda but as it is it’s mostly inconsistent.

Devlog 1 - Designing Kero and collecting ideas.

So I think I am at a point to start the Devlog proper. Moving forward everything from here on out should be new production, new ideas, and new work. What better a place to start then with the design of the main character, Kero!

As mentioned before her original design was built entirely as a sprite with no actual reference art. I just started with a mock screenshot and came up with the design seen here.

I didn't really draw anything as I had a pretty good idea to go from right from the beginning of what I wanted. This time, however, because I am planning to be working in the 3rd dimension I felt it was appropriate to test out some designs on paper to model from.

The first one I went for a more detail focused approach based off of Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Maverick Hunter X. This style uses longer limbs that have exaggeration to them in key places such as the head, forearms, hands, and feet.

You may also notice that the original sprite's armor is a bit different than the new concepts. Originally she was going to have a breast plate and more underwear like marking on the suit more reminiscent to Mega Man's design. Since then I have opted for a design more inspired by Protoman and I think it looks better and less goofy than the undies on the outside of the spandex look haha.

While I am indeed happy with how this turned out, after plenty of meditating on it I decided to go ahead and try a different approach that, anatomically, is closer to the proportions of the original sprite.

This design pulls much more from the original sprite but is also HEAVILY inspired by Mega Man Powered Up (Rockman Rockman in Japan) It features a more "chibi" like design with a large head and smaller body with exaggerated proportions.

This design is not only much closer to the original sprite design in terms of body proportions but also has the benefit of a much more stylized look as well as an opportunity for much more exaggerated facial expressions which I believe are important. One of my favorite aspects of games like Wind Waker were the fantastic facial designs.

Overall, I think that the latter will be the design I want to flesh out and work on more for the game and moving forward. Mind you it's still just a sketch even if a colored one.

The next thing on my agenda is to work on some variations of the character. One of the things I am not happy with are her freckles and I would like to re-work them. I also want to mess around with the design of her pupils a bit.

With that said I feel like it's at least a good start design wise and provides plenty of room to expand upon.

I am also working on learning C# through Codecademy for use with Unity and I also need to pick up blender again if my ADHD riddled attention span will allow it.

At the very least I am happy to have gotten something done and I hope you all enjoy the designs.

I share a Steam library with my husband’s best friend, and he owns like... (goes to check) um... 644 mothafuckin’ games??? so long story short I’m downloading Fallout 4, hahaha. I’ll be able to play it when he’s at work, at least - so kinda like a free trial, and then it goes on sale this weekend if I decide it’s worth getting.

I get the vibe that like most Bethesda games, this one is best played with mods. Any FO4 mods to recommend to a first-timer? (first time playing the game, not my first time modding)

Heya! I was tagged by Chilli G themself @julianjoystark to do the 10 things you didn’t know about me tag. So here we go!

1. I really like plague doctors. Like the aesthetic, the history, the whole world of plague doctors is very interesting to me. I’m a history shithead.

2. I have broken 10 bones not including the individual finger shit (I broke both my hands twice and its a lot of little bones so I’m not arsed to count them)

3. A kid named Pickles taught me how to play basketball when I was like 7 and my brother was really jealous because a black kid taught me how to play and I was better than him.

4. I have wanted to be a writer since the 2nd grade. And I used to get in trouble for always picking the “write your vocabulary in stories” homework all the time when we were supposed to switch to like sentences and definitions and nonsense. 

5. I own upwards of 500 books and I’m going to need to buy my own library.

6. I self-published a book when I was 13 and it was terrible + is still on the market + no I won’t tell you what it is cause it’s really bad.

7. I have played every pokemon game, every colour. 

8. I will graduate with an Associates degree in December and I have no idea what I’m going to do after that because I hate college and It’s already taken 3 years

9. I worked in a call center for two years and I quit twice because that job made me want die.

10. I have had a tumblr since I was in 10th grade which is like 6-7 years. So I’m a meme mess.

The studio used coffee drops to visualize this distinction in diagrams, as well as to illustrate the variety of flavors involved. The posters and postcards also illustrate how Hankook Coffee selects, imports and processes the beans by visiting coffee plantations. The project was showcased at the 2015 Seoul Cafe Show in Korea and is presently being used in sales presentations and distributed to Korean customers.
