You’re like throwing off the dark and mysterious with your energy, so he’s gonna act indifferent, maybe even irritated.

Best believe that he clings onto you right back at home. I don’t take criticism on this take.

Now he’s not feeding in to these other girls minds that he could somehow care to look their way, but these girls STILL stare at him with heart eyes.

Cue him just walking away from them, telling you to come on already.

Shikamaru Nara

Complains, complains, complains again.

“What a drag” “you’re so troublesome”

He’s blushing though, don’t let him lie. It’s obvious.

He secretly finds comfort in your constant clinging. And the way you like to spend time with him. And be around him constantly. You must really like him. He’s secretly flattered.

He just can’t open up so he’s never gonna tell you that.

He’s not really the type that women are just falling at his feet, so you won’t have to worry about being jealous so much.

If a girl on a mission does get a little too close though, he WILL distance himself from her. Don’t worry.

He’ll complain if you step in for him to help get the girl away, but he’ll be grateful for the help (silently, bc out loud he’s saying he can handle it himself)

Kiba Inuzuka

I don’t know why people think Kiba is some player or fuck boy. So I want to go ahead and clarify, I don’t think he would be. I think he’s actually got nervous teen boy crushing energy, no matter his age.

He’s clinging to you too. Lmfao.

Literally you two are attached at the hip, arm, shoulder, whatever. Attached.

Akamaru is always with you two though, but who doesn’t love Akamaru?!

He gets jealous too.

You two are probably unbearable bc listen, hope for everybody’s sake you aren’t as jealous as he is.

If a man looks in your direction, he will whine for the rest of the night.

That being said, he is not accusing you of entertaining or doing anything, he’s just complaining about the guys audacity to even look in your direction.

Shino Aburame

DO NOT LET THIS MAN LIE TO YOU. He gets jealous.

Like petty kinda jealous. He’s a petty mf.

So you are not alone if you get jealous.

He’s also physically clingy behind closed doors, but ONLY behind closed doors.

He asks that you not hang off him like a koala in front of everybody, but he’ll perhaps hold your hand.

He’s clingy in a less physical way. He needs you to stay close to him most of the time, just be there. So if you like quality time, this the guy for you.

Back to jealously, this is the only reason I could ever foresee him being even a little toxic. He trusts you fully, but give a little bit too much attention to somebody and he’ll convince himself he’s like not your first choice and you forgot him like everybody else did.

So he’s more jealous than you, without a doubt in my mind.

Honestly, he takes time and effort to convince to settle down and get out of his own head.

Neji Hyuga

Not a PDA person. I think he might be willing to like hold hands. Accept a kiss on the cheek or something. But really, he wouldn’t be all TOO found of being literally clinged to.

However, he does like to have you around. So if you are just the clingy type in regards to being around them all the time, he’s okay with that.

He wants to be around you too.

He’s not the jealous type himself, and he probably won’t really notice that you’re jealous.

I don’t think he’d appreciate somebody other than you being all over him though, so you don’t have to worry much. He’ll tell a person straight up, no sugarcoating, to get away from him.

If you complain about somebody’s actions later, he’ll realize you were jealous. He’ll probably ask why if he told them off anyways. After a conversation, he’ll probably just reassure you that he will continue to tell people off.

Nobody touches him but you.

Rock Lee

HES SO MFING CLINGY

PHYSICALLY AND JUST IN GENERAL.

He talks about you all the time to everybody he can. He’s constantly telling people that you’re his partner. Bragging about you.

And since you’re clingy and he’s clingy, you’re probably right there by his side as he does this.

If for some reason, he doesn’t get a chance or remember to introduce you in some flamboyant, glamorous, extra way, and somebody tries to make a pass at him, he won’t notice they’re flirting unless it’s OBVIOUS.

So cue your jealously.

He would be the type to literally push somebody away and say some shit like “I’m flattered, but I have a gorgeous, amazing partner already.”

Sai Yamanaka

(I call him Sai Yamanaka bc it creates a bigger line for the name btw, he’s not married in this case)

He does not mind you constantly clinging to him or following him around. Not in the slightest.

That is because he likes you, so he wants to be around the person he likes, after all. (Sai, yall are dating. That’s obvious, you don’t have to say it)

He probably follows you around a lot because he thinks he’s supposed to. And also, he finds that he likes to be around you.

He might do something a book told him to, get too close to another person, paying no mind to any like reason it could be wrong. He didn’t mean it that way.

And since we’ve established you’re the jealous type, you’d have to explain to Sai that he can’t just get too close to other people like that.

Gaara of the Sand

He doesn’t mind the clinging, but he doesn’t have the time for it :/

When you can cling to him or follow him around without interfering with his focus and work, he’s perfectly okay with it.

And he’ll find himself wishing that when he’s busy, he wasn’t so you could be with him.

A lot of the girls in the village have a crush on him now that he’s kazekage, so you’re bound to be pretty jealous.

But Gaara doesn’t let these girls near him. He’s polite with them, but he’s not entertaining anything at ALL.

You don’t have to worry with him. He’s as loyal as can be.

At home, he’s clinging to you too. He’s touch starved.

And he loves to spend his free time with you.

Kankuro of the Sand

Cling to him in public like a koala. He’s not complaining. He’s BRAGGING.

PLEASE.

He’s the type to tease you about it, but if you break away from him because of it he’ll complain bc WHERE ARE YOU GOINGGG?

He would purposely make you jealous. Within reason. He will not disrespect your relationship to do so. But if he knows something simple could make you jealous, like giving too much attention to a stuffed animal, he will do it on purpose

“You wish this was you, huh?”

He’d like it if you wanted to just come sit in his workshop with him while he works on puppets. He’ll talk when he’s not like SUPER focused.

A comprehensive guide as to why Aburame Shino is peak Autistic Representation

Very long post under the cut!

( This is poorly organized and doesn't actually include everything, but you know :] )

It starts with the flashback to when Torune was taken and flashbacks to early academy days, during which Shino is about 7.

He showed no interest in playing with other children, or in making friends. He didn't see a point in talking to people who didn't want to discuss his special interest, which he dedicated all his free time to, and he didn't emote when Torune was taken away, even though it impacted him very deeply. Even as a small child he talked "like an adult", monotonous, strange phrasing, over-explaining, and too quietly. When he wasn't being ignored by his classmates, they were trying to use him.

Later on when you see him socialize more, in Pre-Teen and Teenage years, more things become apparent.

In general he seems semi-verbal, most of the time silent, and becomes agitated when forced to repeat himself. Konoha Hiden expands on this, saying that he wishes people just knew what he meant and felt without him having to talk, and that he is bonded to Akamaru because he feels that Akamaru is the only one who he can communicate with in that way. When he's upset he isolates and at one point is even seen hitting his head when he was trying to cool down and was interrupted by unwanted social interaction.

He doesn't understand why people need to see his face, and usually doesn't look in the direction of the person he is addressing. He also doesn't understand jokes, rarely laughs, and angrily dissects puns…but then later puns become his entire sense of humor. He's never dressed for the season, either. Aburames tend to be very covered up by default but besides his Part 1 outfit he is always in multiple layers regardless of the season. (Year round trench coats are a huge autistic stereotype.) He gets along better with people outside of his age group, respected by adults and looked up to by younger kids who think he is cool and knowledgeable. Konoha Hiden also states that during this period he was suffering with comorbid Anxiety and Depression.

There's a lot of black and white thinking on display, for example he is anti-alcohol-- obviously he would have been taught not to drink as an Aburame, but he also doesn't like when others drink. He sees it as universally bad. He's a stickler for the rules and often scolds his peers for not following rules and guidelines. He also seems like a bit of a prude even though it is suggested that he himself has a dirty mind (noticing girls' cup sizes and the implications of Road to Ninja treating his Personal Business as a personality trait) which is a funny hypocrisy I have noticed in a lot of autistic people. He holds a hell of a grudge and ruminates endlessly, which is documented at higher rates in autistic people due to rigid thinking.

He is trying to make friends like Torune wanted, and is now aware that not having friends is a bad thing. He starts feeling the pain of being ostracized not only in general but also by his friend group and isn't even sure if he has friends. He is 17 years old before he understands what allistics consider friend status.

We start to see some of his sensory issues pop up too. He is seen wearing sunglasses even at night and while sleeping. He hates any food that smells strongly and his favorites are pretty bland. He pulls a piece of meat out of his mouth, in public, uncharacteristically violating taboo. He was able to identify the number of people in a distant group only by sound at a time when this would have been above his skill level. (Which makes sense. Team 8 is thus Eyes, Ears, Nose. More on this later.) By Boruto, he has added ear protection and stronger eye protection that he wears when he is expecting to be near fluorescent lights or crowds. Suddenly his overall mood is greatly improved and he can smile openly.

He shows signs of hyperempathy in being overly distressed when losing insects, as he has many millions of them, and having an exaggerated physical response to anticipating Sakura and Naruto's despair.

He has chronic bitchy resting face and is extremely blunt to a a degree of being insulting, which makes people assume he is a mean person. He also comes across as pedantic to his peers, when from his perspective he's just didactic, and even though he over-explains everything his peers still have difficulty understanding what he's saying.

He will also randomly connect the topic of discussion to his special interest and begin infodumping about bugs, and isn't aware that people around him are not interested or worse, repulsed by his special interest until told, at which point he feels personally hurt. Generally his interests are very stereotypical of an autistic person: bugs, comics, ecology, strategy, etc.

He seems level-headed and robotically analytical until he reaches a certain threshold when he suddenly over-emotes in dramatic and awkward ways.

You might notice that when his hands aren't in his pockets, he doesn't seem to know what to do with them; they're always balled into fists, which smells of someone who was taught not to stim. Even so, when he gets really excited in Konoha Hiden and is being himself, he starts spinning around. His speech quirk preceding frequent over-explanations (Why? Because... / The reason is because...) is also considered a type of echolalia.

Mentioning Hiden, in the Blank Period we start to see changes associated with the autistic experience of starting to understand that you are awkward, not knowing how to fix it, and all the anxiety that comes with that. He is stuck riding the lag train and is fully ready to become a hermit in the woods.

He isn't understood in the way that he wants to be understood. He can't let himself get comfortable in other people's homes. He uses his trench coat as a barrier between himself and other people, treating it like a security blanket. He still doesn't understand how his choice of attire affects people's perception of him and becomes agitated when he's told it makes him look suspicious. He doesn't appear to be pursuing any intimate relationships, and displays a lack of boundaries when picking Choji up with his insects when he gets excited.

The lag train becomes even more apparent in Boruto. He hasn't found a partner, his friends are growing even further away from him, and possibly worst of all he's seen as more childish-- too grown-up as a kid, too immature as an adult.

He is masking extremely heavily for the sake of his career, mirroring Iruka, removing almost all of his personal identity from his appearance including the parts that made him feel safe-- everything has to be professional. This actually hurts his ability to work with kids because he already knew how to talk to them, but he is now trying to emulate the image of a teacher for the sake of professionalism.

In the classroom he struggles with things I have seen real-life autistic teachers talk about: He works well with the younger kids, they love him and his fun facts, but the older ones can tell that there is something different about him and they will ignore or outright bully him. It's very difficult to control them or hold their interest. (He later develops stomach problems due to stress from working with said older kids)

The big problem is that he is not good at masking. In traditional settings with very clearly defined roles and rules of how to act and what to say he gets by just fine, but in organic interactions it's nothing but spaghetti and this causes him severe stress. He is proud of himself for being able to speak to many people in a day now but at what cost? Pattern recognition and rigid thinking of course leads to rumination spirals, and under extreme pressure he starts reverting to childish things. He has only had Kura-maa a short time before he becomes attached and starts personifying it. This may seem childish, but autistic people are more likely to do this and will continue to do so later into life than their allistic peers. (See Object Personification in Autism: This paper will be very sad if you don’t read it)

He has become a real people-pleaser, allowing himself to be imposed upon constantly, and apologizes excessively even for situations that were not his fault, which are both behaviors many autistic people pick up. And, for all his masking, he can't hide that he is still terrible at understanding and constructing metaphors, ie "bad insects" and the yakisoba bun analogy.

He is trying his damnedest to adapt and accommodate himself in a rapidly changing world that wasn't very friendly to him to begin with. He was able to slide under the radar as respectable and somewhat normal when the world was as rigid as he is. Now every day he's facing new challenges that he isn't used to and he's acting a little fucked up and neurotic, overcompensating and making it worse.

So yeah, maybe he's not 'cool' by most standards. Not everyone gets a happy ending where they become the most ideal version of themselves. Not in real life, and not in animes that have hundreds of characters. What's important is that he is exactly on the trajectory set by previous installments to the series and very accurately and thoroughly depicting autistic struggles in every aspect of life. And that's pretty cool to me. :)

Some Abruame OCs!

It's Shino's birthday so I rushed to colour the lineart I commissioned from @calvin-arium!!

I have a bunch of other Aburame OCs (I have a master post about them here!) and I hope to do more eventually, but it was only right to start off with Shino and his closest family.

[CW: mentions of death and infant death, mention of homophobia]

Shikie is Shibi's father and the clan head at the time of my main Aburame fic, The Smell of the Rain (circa 2025, blank period). She was a young girl when the clan first joined Konoha under the impulsion of Kodama, her mother and the first hive-bearer. She became the clan head after her in her 50's. She is very much a shinobi of the old guard and has been alive through both the warring state period and the 70 years of global wars that followed. While she does, to a certain extent, support the Shinobi Alliance, she is also still very wary of its future, and has learned to secure the safety of her clan above any other matter. She has had to make sacrifices for it throughout her life, but knowing that her people are where they are today, alive and well, eases a lot of her regrets. (Although, of course, never all of it.) She and Shibi are very different in a lot of ways, but she is proud of him, and he will most likely be the one to inherit her place in the near future.

Yoshino was Shikie's second son and Shibi's younger brother. Very talented Shinobi from a young age, he was promoted to Chuunin during the first exam opening after the Second War, alongside his teammate Amanmori Nagomi. They kept working together a lot after that, working on combined attacks that used Yoshiki's hive as a catalyser and guide for Nagomi's Lightning Release. They started dating as teens, secretly at first, then shortly in front of Nagomi's family, who came from a civilian background with much different pressure surrounding relationships and bloodlines. He came out to his mother shortly before the Third War, who answered she couldn't, given the political context and the state of their clan at the time, be supportive of a childless union. Both young men were deployed together during the Third War, and died in the same battle.

Mahono was born to the Sarutobi clan, of Sarutobi Natsumasa, Hiruzen's older brother. She was a skilled Fire Release user, a technique she used both alone and in combination with chakra blades. She faced Shibi during their first Chuunin exam and overpowered him quite significantly (although, to his defence, the age difference did probably play against him). She still took note of his persistence and willingness to take risks in battle. They met again later and became sparing partners, him to improve his hand-to-hand combat, her to improve her options against wide-range techniques. She joined the Anbu in her late teens and he eventually first asked her out when he was 17 and her 20, a couple years before the Third War started. They had a first daughter shortly after the Third War, Yukatomu, who died from hive implantation-related complications during her first days of life, and then Shino a bit over two years later. She died on a mission when he was five.

The Inuzuka and Aburame Families

Tsume Age: 39 Occupation: Dog walker and trainer

Tsume had always wanted to be a vet -- unfortunately, her undiagnosed ADHD and eventual teen pregnancy got in the way of that. But she loves animals, she relates the best to dogs, and she was firm in her want to work with them for the rest of her life.

So at nineteen, with a fresh baby in a sling around her back, she started up a dog-walking business. Now she employs people under her (and still walks dogs of her own accord)

She's a rough soul, blunt and to the point, but loves her kids with her whole heart.

Hana Age: 20 Occupation: Student (veterinary science) and dog trainer

Hana often feels like the only person in her family who takes life seriously. Her mother is full of life, living impulsively and on the edge. And her little brother refuses to take his epilepsy seriously, instead choosing to ignore signs of it in favour of roughhousing with his friends.

She balances working as a dog trainer, after years of experience with her mother's business, and studying to become a vet, hoping to one day open a clinic that treats and trains medical assistant dogs, like Akamaru.

Having grown up close to (and eventually crushing on) Itachi, Hana still doesn't know whether to believe that he did what they say he did or not.

Kiba Age: 15 (birthday July 7th, turned 15 before the school year started) Occupation: Student, occasionally helps with Tsume's dog-walking business

Kiba was only five when he had his first tonic-clonic seizure, and it rapidly became something he had frequently. With medication it came mostly under control, but in his early teens it started to get harder and harder to keep on top of, and now he has a medical alert dog, Akamaru, who can tell when he starts having pre-symptoms and has him lie down.

Unfortunately for Akamaru, Kiba has other priorities. He takes after his mother in not taking life too seriously, and often favours just getting on with his day, rather than pause to rest when needed.

Shibi Age: 42 Occupation: Entomology professor (specialising in beetles)

Shibi, contrary to popular belief, has always been a very family-oriented man. When his sister died, he and his wife took in her son Torune without question -- and when his wife died shortly after his son Shino was born, he wasted no time in ensuring he could work from home and balance being a sole parent along with his career.

He, along with the rest of his family, has fairly poor vision along with light sensitivity, and so he wears prescription sunglasses most of the time. This also helps him avoid eye contact.

Shibi would stop at nothing to help his sons succeed in a world that isn't made for them.

Torune: Age: 20 Occupation: Student (entomology and medicine, focusing on venomous insects and treatments for their stings)

Torune has no memories of his biological parents, but he doesn't mind that so much. Shibi stood in for them and cared for him when nobody else could, and he got a little brother out of the deal, too.

Following in Shibi's footsteps in a lot of ways, Torune found a love for insects at a young age, and found himself drawn to the macabre side of poisons and venom that came along with them. Being autistic, along with the rest of his little family, he found it easy to lose himself in his study.

Torune was in the same year and classes as Hana, Fu, and Itachi growing up, and was shocked along with the rest of his classmates when Itachi did what he did.

Shino Age: 14 (birthday January 21st) Occupation: Student

Shino was lucky enough to make friends with Kiba at a fairly young age, and Hinata joined their little neurospicy crew a year or so later. Having someone by his side that was brave and headstrong made it a lot easier for Shino to exist in his quiet little shell, and while he frequently did have big emotions, they were mostly contained to whatever he could express using his AAC.

He's definitely gotten better at it though, and as his circle of friends has grown, so has his ability to communicate -- and his ability to recognise and act on his feelings.

Now, with a crush having entered the picture, Shino is going to do his best to make himself understood. Without Kiba's help.

Kawaki Academy Arc: First Impressions

So Kawaki's going to the academy with Himawari for the next few episodes. The arc's started out surprisingly strong.

So Naruto has assigned Kawaki to be the bodyguard for the Bamboo Princess Kae, who's a foreign exchange student. Assassins are after Kae, so her father sent her into the big city of Konoha while they deal with the coup.

Naruto doesn't want to worry Kae or let word of the coup attempt spread, so he's assigned Kawaki to secretly guard her...and absolutely no one else. He doesn't even inform the homeroom teacher what's going on because the mission is Just. That. Secret.

Kae's allowed to tell everyone she's a princess though, and of course paparazzi are allowed to harass the children in the classroom unmonitored. Just another A+ plan from our knucklehead Hokage there.

Kawaki, understandably, terrifies all the tiny Academy children because he's a head taller than them and has Resting Bully Face. When he tries to make friends with Kae, misunderstandings arise and everyone thinks he's hitting on her, which of course causes drama with her other admirer, Eiki Fuuma.

Eiki's the son of the police chief Koutarou, (who's been a minor character in other arcs). Eiki decides the best way to protect the princess and maintain law and order is to attack Kawaki in the middle of class. But Kawaki is a Main Character, and so he easily dodges Eiki's Tackle jutsu.

Himawari decides to play matchmaker and gives Kawaki the tea: Kae really likes tea. And romance novels. So Kawaki decides to bribe Kae into friendship with the teen girl version of Icha Icha.

Eiki sees Kawaki handing over Baby's First Erotica to Kae and concludes that Kawaki is harassing the princess. He steals a summoning scroll from the storage room (why have the teachers not locked that thing yet???) and attacks Kawaki on the rooftop. The rhino-wolf-pokemon thing goes out of control and attacks Kae, and Kawaki takes it out with one punch.

Kawaki saved the princess's life, and he gave her free swag, so she agrees to be his friend. The End.

Thoughts on the Cast

Himawari's class is just as full of "strong personalities" as Boruto's was. From left to right:

Baby Inuzuka: Somehow this child in suspenders and a neck tie is related to Kiba. But if Kiba is a wolf, then this boy has the soul of a Pomeranian. His partner is a Huskie, which if you know Huskies, they are the biggest, whiniest babies of the dog kingdom.

Off-Screen Brunette: Also henchman material

Pink-Haired Girl: The daughter of an actress who feels personally affronted whenever another girl steals the spotlight. She also thinks she's the protagonist of this show.

Red-Haired Girl: The real gossip queen. Already knew everybody's backstory before they even sat down.

There's also Yuina, Eho, and Kawaki, but we met them in past arcs, so I'm not going to waste a screenshot on them.

Overall, they're a good group. We've come a long way from the days of Kushina, when kids would get bullied for having red hair. I foresee many fanfictions in the future.

It was written for @aburamewaifu who asked me to write something for Shino and Shibi.

Haruka kneels and bows before the altar, lighting a stick of incense as she does every morning.

When she first married Shibi, she'd abased herself before his ancestors, promising to take care of them. It's one of her main areas of responsibility after all. As wife to a clan head and mother to a clan heir, she cares for all of the Aburame - the living and the dead.

Over time though, it has become a familiar ritual and a comforting one. Soon it will be obon and the offerings will become large and ornate, the best their family can give, but the offering today is not for family.

It's for her.

The woman whose place Haruka has taken.

Taijutsu & Temperature Tolerance

On multiple occasions we are led to believe Shino and by extension the rest of the Aburame struggle to regulate their body temperature.

First things first, Shino is always covered up. Even in the summer he's covered up in layers and layers, as are the other clan members. When the others go to the beach and are playing in the ocean, he's not even present. On the occasion we do see him go into a body of water, he doesn't undress and is very unhappy about it. During the summer festival and when visiting the onsen with Kiba, he still wears a haori over his yukata.

Kiba immediately wonders why he's always covered up. Is it because of his insects?

Well, yes and no. We immediately see that no, he's not covered in bugs like Kiba feared. But he is absolutely burning up. He gets overheated way too easily. What happened?

To answer that we look toward Shino's ability in taijutsu. It's not great. His enemy remarks that it's simply known that insect users are crap in hand-to-hand combat. Most would assume this is a neglected skill because they are long-range combatants. But plenty of long-range fighters can hold their own up close and personal, so what's really going on here?

Where do the kikaichu live?

That seems like an obvious question. In their bodies.

When Sakura scans his body, there are remarkably few kikaichu in his torso. They haven't set up shop in his organs, and this makes sense. As parasites, they should be concerned with the health of their host. Some organs even assist in the production of chakra, so going digging through guts can only hurt them in the long run. Additionally, Shino is light enough to be caught are carried around easily and, as the scales demonstrate, much of his body is taken up by their presence. Though he only releases a small portion of them, the weight registered is dangerously low for a teen boy his size, yet he's just as muscular as the others. Why is it that a boy as built as he is and with the training of his taijutsu-oriented teammates doing so poorly?

The answer is the kikaichu.

The only place left for them is the muscles. And there's an obscene amount of them. How much of his body have they eaten through to make room for themselves? How much muscle tissue has he lost? Through losing muscle tissue, he has not only lost much of his physical combat ability, but also all this lost mass makes it difficult for a person to maintain their body temperature. Being underweight mostly makes the affected person cold all the time-- you've probably heard this before. But it also puts them at a substantial risk of hyperthermia-- dangerous overheating.

TL;DR: Kikaichu burrowing activities = progressive muscle tissue loss = poor taijutsu and poor thermoregulation

@itscalledmidgar made a line art of two of my Aburame OCs so I coloured it and made a little character sheet!

Both of them will appear in my upcoming Aburame clan fic. (It's there now!)

I only put the direct relatives on the sheet because I made the whole family tree so... I could list about 80 relatives lmao.

Anyway!

They are twins, as you might have guessed. Their mother (Hiame) is Aburame by birth and their father (Hiroi) is a civilian from the Land of Lightning. He was born in an itinerant merchant family and met Hiame that way. Their brother (Marui) is 17 at the time of the fic, but he is on a mission so he won't appear in it. (For this once! I hope another time, maybe. He is cool.)

Both their mother and their mother's mother became orphans while growing up and were half-brought up by other members of the clan so it's not entirely easy to explain where they fall on the Aburame family tree, but I'm gonna try.

Biologically, their grandmother, Machiha, was Shikuro (Torune's father)'s cousin. They are only very distantly related to Shino, since Torune's branch of the family and his only connect through Kiseki, their common great-great-grandmother (and the twin's great-great-great-grandmother).

However, the twin's grandmother (Machiha) lost her mother in childbirth, and her father at 5 during the First Great War, so she was mostly raised by Mineaki (Shino's grandmother's younger brother) making her effectively Shibi's first-degree cousin.

Said grandmother died during the Kyuubi attack when the twins' mother (Hiame) was 13, and her husband died on a mission three years later. So while Hiame grew up raised by her parent for the most part, she was still partially fostered as an older teen by one of Mineaki's biological children (effectively her mother's foster sister) Miara, and her wife Eimi.

At that moment they have two children of their own that are about 3 and 1 (Chihane and Amane), and one foster child who is 5 (Tomoo) and lost her remaining parent in the Kyuubi attack as well. Hiame doesn't really consider Miara and Eimi as second mothers since she was already quite grown up when her father died, but they are aunts that helped her as a young adult, and they do act as grandmothers for Akarui, Kurai and Marui, since, for they part, they didn't get to know their biological grandparents at all.

Eimi comes from Amegakure, she ran a camp for refugees and war orphans there, so she has a tendency to pick up a few too many strays on the way haha.

All of that to say: Akarui and Kurai's only common biological ancestors with Shino is their great-great-great-grandmother Kiseki. (She was the first hive bearer of the clan! But Aburame clan lore will have to wait for another occasion.) But they are, through both their biological grandmother and their foster grandmothers, the children of one of Shino's second degree cousin.

In the end, the closeness in blood doesn't really matter inside the Aburame clan, because they all live on the same compound either way, and they are a small enough clan (about 20 alive members by the time of the Aburame fic) that everyone is well acquainted with everyone. Shino considers Akarui and Kurai as his niblings, as he does with anyone their generation, in the same way that everyone his generation are his cousins. This is especially true for him who has no (living) direct siblings/niblings/cousins/aunt or uncle.

The main thing that makes some people closer to some than others is who they share a house with, since there are four houses on the compound and, of course, you share more of your daily life with people you share a house with.

Shino lives with his father and grandmother, and used to live with Torune and his father when they were alive.

Hiame, her husband and the three children have their own house.

Eimi and Miara live with their biological daughter (Chihane) and their foster daughter (Tomoo) + her family (her husband and their two children). Their biological son lived there too before he died during the Fourth War.

And Mineaki (Shibi's uncle) lives with his wife, his remaining son (he has a third biological child who went in the Root under the name Tatsuma, we see him in Kabuto's flashback) who was Muta's father, Muku (Muta's sister) and her husband and two children (one of which is Harika!).

There is another whole branch of Aburame people that isn't shown in the family tree extract I showed here because all of them are dead outside of Tomoo, who was orphaned at 2 and was raised by Eimi and Miara. Youji/Sugaru (the Root Aburame who stole Shisui's Sharingan for Danzou) is from there.
