Sciartober Day 31: And the last one goes to the owlfish for the prompt: dark. There are only video reference for this animal along with a few illustrations, but I wanted to do something from one of MBARI's videos. I corrected the forehead to be less sloped, though the mouth might still be too big for this particular fish. Pentel brushpen, Windsor & Newton fine-line marker, and Prismacolor fine-line marker on Canson mixed media.

Finally Jumping into Inktober with day 9’s prompt but didn’t realize I was looking at last year’s prompt list lol. Oh well. The prompt was nest so I drew a coho salmon and a salmon redd (nest).

I have completed the siphonophore and am released from its thrall. But now it is released to the wider world. Is the cost too high?
Tumblr media
No, it’s fine. Siphonophores are great!
Siphonophores are colonial hydrozoans, made up of individual polyps that essentially function as different body parts. Neat!
This particular siphonophore is Bathyphysa conifera, which is also nicknamed the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and I think that’s just wonderful.
Inspired by prompt #2 for sciartober: colony.

Instead of doing inktober this time, I’ve been doodling Sciartober prompts. Not all of them, and I started on day 11, got carried away with one of them, and I have no idea when I’m going to finish it, but here’s what I’ve done so far. So, day 11 - fish. Or in my case, a happy Castorocauda trotting home with a nice, big, juicy one. Day 17 - invisible. Hoplophoneus trying to dissapear from view. Day 18 - in the ocean. Basilosaurus, because of course it is . Day 19 - mammal. Fruitafossor, probably the earliest known relative of therian mammals. Day 20 - tiny. Hadrocodium, cause it tiny. It was an early Jurassic mammaliaform that was pretty cloe to crown group mammals. I kind of screwed up the thumb, and for some reason the shading looks much worse than it does in person. I also made two versions of this, but I decided to go with this one, because while I prefer the hand in the first on, it had really stark, dramatic light and shadow that detracted from the Hadrocodium. I should have predicted that drawing in a room lit only by small desk lamp will do that. I also managed to kill my back and left arm drawing these. Because of course I did.

“Opposumology” and “underappreciated” combined! This little one is about to enjoy a jam-filled lemon poppy seed scone. (#ifyouknowyouknow) Opposums are this strange mix of weird and cute, but they have reason to be appreciated as well! They are North America’s only marsupial, have prehensile tails and opposeable toe thumbs to help them climb. Opposums help keep tick populations down. They are immune to rabies, and also some snake bites because they eat snakes for breakfast! Valuable research for antivenoms is being done because of this. Definitely just had fun on this one, while attempting to shift towards a different technique. #gouache #illustration #paint #art #sketch #creation #nature #sciartober2021 #sciartober #drawlogies #drawlogies2021 #opposum #opposumology #scone #ologies #ologiesart #inktober #underappreciated #paint #marsupial https://www.instagram.com/p/CU3KlgrpLw1/?utm_medium=tumblr

I’m doing the Sciartober 2020 prompt list this year for creature design inspiration. Here’s what Ive got so far!  Day 1: Emerge Mushrooms burst forth from seemingly no where from the ground but that was a bit too mundane so enter the literal "Garden Eel" these chompy wigglers use the pungent scent of the mushrooms to lure in insects to munch on. Day 2: Colony In the spirit of the spooky season! Pumpkin Mimic Crabs. They invade pumpkin patches and hide amongst the gourds raising their young and establishing their massive invasive families. Day 3: Physics In all honesty I had no idea what kind of creature I could pull from the word Physics. Then this confusing ethereal being burst forth from the ether. It doesn't speak, it doesn't eat but it seems to have an insatiable curiosity for the universe. Day 4: Cellular I'll admit I phoned this one in a little bit. The Tardigrade or Water bear, got a much more literal representation. Day 5: Armored This good boy is the scourge of the desert! The Beetled Coyote is built to be hardy and perfectly suited to be the apex predator of the driest climates. Its hardened shell makes for very few threats to this critter. Day 6: Adaptation What better way to infiltrate a willing population than by adopting a soft and cuddly, nonthreatening exterior. No one would ever suspect Snowball was the real reason for the Gunderson Family's disappearance. Day 7: Invertebrate You can beat cephalopods! This little squish is the adolescent stage of a monstrous Kraken! Day 8: Mechanical Hard edges and straight lines are not my favorite, but I'm particularly proud of this one. This gleaming beauty is my mechanical form of an Orchid mantis. Day 9: Infectious How do you make light of something terrifying? By making it adorable of course. These Pimplepuses are basically giant viruses. They rapidly multiply within their host and when they mature they burst forth from pores in the skin to float away and infect a new host. Day 10: Shelter Meet the Snog, Snail Frog. This design was actually something I put together or a home-brew DnD campaign. They're common ambush predators in swamps, they have a severe weakness to salt and they taste amazing in butter and garlic.

Sciartober Day 2: Over to the GNSI list for the prompt crush with a spotted hyena skull. Their powerful jaws and bone-crushing teeth are fitting for the prompt. Pentel brushpen and Prismacolor fine-line marker on Canson mixed media.

I’m a little late to start sciartober , because of reasons, but I’ll be getting on that bandwagon now! I’ll have to double up on a few prompts to catch up.
Anyway, for day 1: emerge I give to you a quick sketch of everybody’s grandpa, Tiktaalik.
