Sciartober Day 31: And the last one goes to the owlfish for the prompt: dark. There are only video reference for this animal along with a few illustrations, but I wanted to do something from one of MBARI's videos. I corrected the forehead to be less sloped, though the mouth might still be too big for this particular fish. Pentel brushpen, Windsor & Newton fine-line marker, and Prismacolor fine-line marker on Canson mixed media.

And, todays see creechur of the day goes to… drumroll please…
The owlfish!!! Also known as the stout blacksmelt.
they live in the deep sea as deep as 6,000 meters deep. From what little we know about them, they swim around the sea using their eyes to try and catch light or bioluminescence to guide them to their prey.
They mostly eat small shrimps and jellies!
Apparently they’re prey for squids, and they’re capable of losing scales to escape encounters with them. The scales can grow back later.
They’re just little guys :)
See creechur!!! Whoever named that was absolutely correct that is a fucking owl fish right there. There's no way it could be called anything else. Owl fish. Look at its eyes, that's an owl fish.
Also what fucking light?? At 6000 metres? Seriously???
It looks so stupid I adore it. Also the scales thing is very cool, I feel like if I was an owl fish I would forget my scales like people forget their keys. Do you feel me

Took some creative liberties with this prompt - owlfish aka. deep sea smelt mermaid.
Owlfish are so named for their very large, round eyes.

What is the Beautiful? // Kenneth Patchen
The narrowing line.
Walking on the burning ground.
The ledges of stone.
Owlfish wading near the horizon.
Unrest in the outer districts.
Pause.
And begin again.
Needles through the eye.
Bodies cracked open like nuts.
Must have a place.
Dog has a place.
Pause.
And begin again.
Tents in the sultry weather.
Rifles hate holds.
Who is right?
Was Christ?
Is it wrong to love all men?
Pause.
And begin again.
Contagion of murder.
But the small whip hits back.
This is my life, Caesar.
I think it is good to live.
Pause.
And begin again.
Perhaps the shapes will open.
Will flying fly?
Will singing have a song?
Will the shapes of evil fall?
Will the lives of men grow clean?
Will the power be for good?
Will the power of man find its sun?
Will the power of man flame as a sun?
Will the power of man turn against death?
Who is right?
Is war?
Pause.
And begin again.
A narrow line.
Walking on the beautiful ground.
A ledge of fire.
It would take little to be free.

Day 10: This was from two days ago, but I forgot to post it given the current climate of the world. Thursday was day 10, and a big smile from Owlfish, since we are nearing the end of isolation! It’s almost over and we can feel it. The kiddo received a couple more care packages from our family to help make these last few days go by quickly, but she also celebrated with us the fact that our local skating rink has reopened! The Owl Fish
"There once was a fish who longed to be among the clouds and the sky and one day it got its wish and soon started to transform slowly into an owl."
My newest digital painting is finally done, this took me more than a week as I worked off and on and was so indecisive with what I wanted and eventually decided on the sky and clouds.
This painting started off with a koi fish sketch that then evolved into the fish bird you see and I started this to prove to myself I can do detailed work even if it isn't in the style I see others do and like,but this is my style. Semi Realistic and animated.
