Ducklings
Tumblr media
Weeks Ronan had been telling you “There are no words for what you are,” after breaks where he would just find you and watch as you set upon the daily task you were given aboard his ship. Irritatingly lingering in watch over what you did, quick to interject and stir up what would surely grow to a migraine inducing argument. But today you were staring at small pond with an army of ducklings mingling while their mothers fished around them. Bobbing in the water and clambering up to try and race across floating lilly pads.
Tumblr media
“You are smiling. Are you in plot to hunt one of those creatures?” Up at Ronan you glared at the unthinkable suggestion, unaware of the effect the look had upon his secretly soft wall of a self.
“I’m smiling because they are adorable! You don’t eat ducklings. And you only eat certain ducks, you need a license to kill them and I don’t eat duck anyways!”
Now you were upset and his face melted into that same look he always had when those purple eyes of his seemed to detail your every inch as of to memorize and discover any sliver of a target to launch an argument over what you seemed to be up to. “What does adorable mean?”
“A-,” you sighed and glanced away in the whirl of thoughts, none of them helpful in defining the pivotal term he was perplexed by. “Something or someone you feel sentimental for. You get the warm fuzzies when you look at them,” up at him you looked again seeing him still staring at you that same way as he took in every word you said like a giant irritating sponge sure to find flaw in the meaning when you were finished. “Get all warm inside and when you look at them, there’s no reason as for why, you just can’t help but want to smile.”
“Hmm,” he said and in a whirl of his own thoughts he nodded and turned to take a stroll to keep mulling over what was circling inside his head.
Five days he did not stop his same pattern. Yet to bring up the talk by the duck pond. But today you could feel his eyes on you before he announced himself. Halfway buried inside a records and intake hall from hell you were tasked to make order of this travesty as you were the assumed least likely to murder someone over the job. Soft thunks of his heavy footfalls sounded across the metal floor of this captured ship that was being stripped of anything useful to be brought aboard Kree vessels hovering around it and he came to a stop a foot from your side.
“Hello Ronan. I swear if you leave so much as a postage stamp here I will stick it on your forehead. There is more than enough here at the moment to occupy me, and whatever Korath came crying to you about I am not taking over his guard shift either! He can take his shift and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine, always tries to wriggle his Tuesday watches over to me for some reason!” More muttering than talking you rambled on as you fumbled a slipping stack of rolled canisters and documents into the organized mess of a pile system you were masterminding across a corner of the room that had him and countless others in awe for the progress you had made in a matter of hours.
“I have found the word for you,” he said and when your hands were empty you rested them atop your hips and looked over up at him readying to hear the beginnings of this new long put off argument coming your way to brighten your already lovely mood. “I find you impenetrably adorable.” Internally you might as well have collapsed to the floor, that is if your body would let you mess up what order you had created inside this space, just standing there to see the wall of a warrior nod his head as he sometimes did. Still with eyes entrancingly locked upon you for as long as possible in his turn away to just stroll out leaving that bomb he dropped on your lap. “I will ensure your next meal is plentiful for the progress you have achieved, and that your Tuesdays remain unscathed and free for entertainment of your choosing.”
He was just gone after that and you whispered to yourself, “What?” And out of that mess of an attack of confusion you had to force yourself back to work, only to wonder what exactly he might mean about you being adorable to him, and could be insinuating about the safety of your Tuesdays in his final statement.

Doctor Who OC: Estelle Williams
Estelle Williams was many things. She was a wannabe fantasy author, a somewhat reluctant college student, the daughter to two amazingly kind parents (and the annoying younger sister to an equally annoying older brother), and she also thinks that she might be having a quarter-life-crisis. Her daily routine of getting up, going to college, maybe working a shift at the small cafe next door, then coming back home, was starting to wear thin on her. And the same faces and people she kept seeing around her tiny hometown every single day would be enough to eventually drive anyone up the wall. Estelle felt as though her life was at a bit of a standstill, the joy she used to get from writing stories was also beginning to disappear, and worst of all, her nightmares were back. It was obvious that something was needed in the young woman's life to bring her out of the rut that she had found herself in. But she wasn't expecting that thing to be a bowtie-wearing madman with a blue police box, who also happened to be the childhood imaginary friend of her future sister-in-law. What Estelle also didn't expect, was that she would end up travelling across time and space with this man, saving people, meeting different monsters and alien races, going to places that she could never have imagined, running a lot, and most of all, falling in love with said bowtie-wearing madman. What could possibly go wrong?
Faceclaim: Saoirse Ronan
Love Interest: Eleventh Doctor, Clara Oswald
Personality: Hyperactive. Talkative. Passionate. Curious. Eager. Impatient. Compassionate. Smart. Pigheaded

Guardians Of the Galaxy Imagines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imagine Ronan taking you from earth and planned on having you as his mate, which makes Nebula insanely jealous that she does the unthinkable. Unbeknownst to her, they’re would be consequences.
(Note: I will be putting one of my cat chimeras in here. So stay tuned.)
Isabella was taken from earth by a Kree leader known as Ronan the accuser. She didn’t know why she was there, but all she knew that it may not be good. Isabella heard and read about the Kree, but not once she ever thought she would be kidnapped by them.
As she sat in the cell on the Kree ship, many thoughts were going in her mind as to why she was there, and what she has done wrong. Luckily, she had her cat, Gremlin, to keep her company. “Don’t worry, Gremlin. I’ll find a way out of here, one way or the other.”She said as she began to scratch Gremlin on her sweet spot underneath her chin, causing her to purr away.
Then the cell door opened and the captain of the guard, Korath, entered. As he stepped inside with the other two guards behind him, he was shocked to see the cat on Isabella’s lap. They immediately stopped where they stood and just stared at Gremlin. “You didn’t mention that she had a Flerken.“ Korath whispered to one of the guards as he was uncomfortable. “Gremlin is not Flerken, but she is much worse than that.” Isabella said to the group the small hint of a warning in her voice.
Korath asked her, “Then what is she?“ Isabella replied, “She is what you call a Chimera. A creature that can shape shift into a bigger counterpart of her self. But don’t worry, she won’t hurt you, unless you do something stupid, of course.”
“Our leader, Ronan, requests your presence. We are to escort you to him.” Isabella raised her eyebrows in shock, and then again, she had that feeling in her gut. Something was going to go bad. The two Kree soldiers take her by her arms and escorted her out of the cell, with Gremlin following behind her. It wasn’t long until they get to the throne room, where Ronan was waiting, with his Warhammer in his hand.
She looked over to her right and saw a bald blue and purple woman, known as Nebula, looking over at her, with a look that made Isabella uncomfortable. She looked away instead at the floor, not saying anything.“Take off her restraints.”Ronan commanded, and they obeyed. He signaled his guards, including Nebula to leave, as he got up and approached Isabella. Ronan walked toward Isabella and began to circle around her, and she continued to stare at the floor, with Gremlin, watching from afar.
After 15 seconds of awkward silence, Ronan finally spoke, “Do you know why I brought you here?” Isabella was a little scared, but she replied, “No, I do not know why you brought me here.” He stood in front of her, raised her head up to look at him with his right hand. “I’ve been observing you from a far from your homeworld, and you seem to be an interesting specimen, not to mention very beautiful.” Isabella gently looked away from him, and she felt her cheeks beginning to get warm. “You don’t have to look away from me, for I will not hurt you. “Ronan said with assurance.
Isabella looked back at him and asked him, “Then why did you bring me here?” He replied, “I brought you here with the intention to make you my mate, to have someone rule by my side. Since my homeworld is lacking suitable partners, I was recommended I must find someone someplace else, and that someplace happens to be on your homeworld.” Isabella felt her heart dropped to what she was hearing. She didn’t know what to say or do. Her? To be the wife of the Kree leader?
Before she could say anything, at the corner of her eye, she saw Gremlin running through the hallway of the throne room toward her, with Nebula chasing after her with a sword. Gremlin leapt up into Isabella’s arms with a look of shock on her face. Almost immediately, Ronan stopped her from coming any closer toward Isabella and Gremlin. “Why are you trying to hurt my cat? Has she done something to you?” She asked as she did her best to calm Gremlin down. “Do not speak a word to me, Terran! I don’t answer to you.” Nebula said to her in an aggressive way. But Ronan, annoyed at how Nebula would act toward his supposedly future mate in front on him. “What gave you the audacity to disrespect my future mate and attempting to cause harm to her companion?”He asked, with a hint of anger in his throat.
Nebula asked him, “You’re actually going to defend this disgusting being, and that furball she’s holding?” Gremlin hissed at her. “How do you think Thanos is going to react when he hears that you chose a Terran as a mate?” She asked again. Ronan, really irritated, spoke to Nebula, “First off, Thanos already knows about her, because I told him.” Nebula was shocked to hear this when he told her that Thanos already knew about the situation. Then he warned her, “And second, any harm that comes to Isabella or her companion, I’ll see to it not only you’ll spend your time in my cell, but I will send back Thanos your head. Do I make myself clear?”
Nebula slowly backed away and bowed her head in shame, replied,“Yes, master.” “Good, now leave out of my sight.“ He commanded, and she walked away. Looking back a little bit over her shoulder. Isabella was second as to how Ronan stood up for her. She finally said, “Is it all right if I have some time to think about it?” Ronan nodded and said to her, “Take all the time you need, but I wish to have an answer when I come back having business I must attend to. I will return in two days time.”
With that said, Ronan had one of the servants to escort and attend to her new place of residence on the ship, and to have Korath assign a guard to look after her while he was gone. And, of course, to keep watch for Nebula just in case she try anything else.
Two days later…
As Isabella was going back to her room after doing some activities around the ship, out of nowhere, a blade sliced her arm, causing a large gash to form. She screamed as she fell to the ground, holding and keeping pressure on it. Isabella looked up and out of the shadows was no other than Nebula herself. “What’s wrong with you? What did I ever do to you?!?” She yelled out to her. As Nebula walked closer, she replied, “I will not have a filthy, dirty Terran like you taint our race, or even so much get to be with Ronan, whom I have served with my life. And if it means I have to terminate you out of existence, so be it.”
As she raised her sword to finish her off, a huge creature with fur, snatched the blade right out Nebula’s hand and landed in between her and Isabella. She was shocked to see how enormous was the animal right in front of her, still holding her sword in it’s mouth and snarling at her as it’s eyes glowed and they looked as if they belonged to a cat. With a closer inspection, she realized that the creature was Gremlin. “I did warn Korath that she is more dangerous than a Flerken.” Isabella said, with her voice still shakened.
Then, as of right on cue, Ronan and the rest of his guards, walked right in to see what was going on. He looked over and was horrified to see Gremlin ‘s true form, and also to see his future mate on the ground, holding her arm. Gremlin dropped the sword and swiped it toward the group. Ronan picked it up and inspected the blade and saw the blood on it. Not blue like the Kree, but red. Ronan, slowly looked at Nebula with rage in his eyes. “What did you do to her?” he asked with anger in his throat. “Nebula attacked me as I was heading back to my room, unprovoked. And Gremlin came to my aid.” Isabella managed to say before she passed out from blood loss and everything went dark.
When Isabella woke up, she found her self in a room, surrounded by a couple of female Kree servants attending to her injury. As she was just about to sit up, one of the servants, gently pushed her back down and said, “You must not move, you need to lie still.” Ronan walked in, and to her surprise, he had Gremlin in his arms. “How long was I unconscious?” Isabella asked as Ronan handed her cat to her. Ronan replied, “You were out half a day, you lost a lot of blood. I managed to give you some of my blood, in order to save your life.” Isabella light back down as tears began to roll down her eyes.
Ronan saw this and for the first time, actually found it hurt him to see Isabella cry. He placed his hand on her uninjured shoulder and asked her, “ Tell me why are you so sad?” She replied, “I was thinking about what you said earlier before you were to leave to attend to some business. I realized that I miss my family and everyone back on my home world.” Ronan was taken aback at this, but he continue to listen.
“I will marry you, on two conditions.” He asked “What are they?” She told him, “One: that my home world is to remain untouched. And two: that I will be allowed to see my family and friends.” Ronan was surprised to hear such conditions, so he said, “I will grant you these two conditions, only if you will agree to mine.” and she asked, “And what are yours?” He replied, “One: that you must promise to remain loyal and faithful to me, and you must promise to love me.” Isabella nodded in agreement. But then, she remembered: Nebula. Slowly, but steady, she sat up from her bed and asked Ronan, “What happened to Nebula?” Ronan replied, “You don’t have to worry about her for a while, for she will be spending time in the cell that you were in recently. And of course, I warned her the next time she caused any more harm to you, I found a better punishment, then sending back Thanos her head.” Isabellas eyes went wide when she heard this, but then, she calmed down.
After a few weeks of Ronan and Isabella getting to know each other, they decided it was time to tie the knot, in a private ceremony with Thanos officiating the union. He did, indeed kept his promise and let her see her family and friends on earth that remained untouched. Some time later, she gave birth to twins, a boy named Ronan, and a girl named Isabelliene.
I hope you guys enjoy the story. Sorry if it is taking me some time to fully do my drawing that I posted up here earlier. I know it’s taking me a little while. But don’t worry, I will get back to it.
Thank you everyone and feel free to like, favor and comment.

Has any of your ocs met a Shadow of Yor? Besides drifter and malphur, of course.
If not, would they ever wield a weapon of sorrow, even for a good cause?
As of the storyline I have right now, none of them encounter a Shadow of Yor but I also haven't explored any of the Twilight Gap Era yet in terms of lore. :) So, they might in the future ;)
But theoretically, Essa and Ronan would be the two who would wield a weapon of Sorrow for a good cause.
Essa's accustomed to sacrificing her morals for the greater good. She can be ruthless and determined so she'd use it if it meant A. Protecting Tevez or B. Protecting the innocent. Tevez wouldn't like it, of course, he'd be terrified of losing her to the corrupting power of the weapon but if she made it clear she was going through with it, he'd do everything he could to keep her on the Light path.
Ronan, on the other hand, doesn't get rezzed until around the time the City is built. He loses one fireteam during the Red War and another during Season of the Chosen on Nessus. By this point, there's nothing he won't do to protect the people he cares about. He'd use it if there was a chance in hell it would save lives.
And Tevez would refuse because he's a goody two shoes and nothing is worth sacrificing what humanity he has left. (Man won't even touch Stasis out of principal.)

Kree having a courting ritual to have their future intended sweep them off their feet in battle or surprise attack.
Ronan unintentionally walking backwards over oc who is on her knees searching for her pen she dropped and he gawks up at her in sheer shock this tiny creature was able to pull a sneak attack on him and get him belly up. And begrudgingly accepts their hand up to get him towering over oc again who does not progress to the next step of courtship to flaunt their victory as they should to name him a prime target to be wooed and afterwards bedded. “You?! You are the one to have brought me down?!”
Oc shows him their pen, “Sheesh drama Queen, all about you, I was looking for my pen. I apologize. Didn’t even see you storming by there big guy.” Turning to walk away leaving Korath there a bit wide eyed at the now dismissed offer of courtship both Kree took that as when he was left there with his subordinate and very unpraised at the moment scuffing his pride a bit as he is a prime catch for any Kree. But apparently no longer for this tiny befuddling creature who claimed to have been in search of a pen in this corner of a wide hall.
Days he strikes up arguments oc huffs and leaves as fast as possible only frustrating and confusing Ronan all the more until he grumbles to Korath when alone again, “They still have yet to conclude their offer of courtship or praise my worthiness as an intended. I am Supreme Commander amongst the Accusers. Hoards on any of our ships and territories would bend to my whim of a time of my attentions.”
“It is possible you insulted them in their first offer.” And Ronan glares at them. “None would claim to be in search of a pen over claim of your hand.” Only making Ronan growl to himself at now having to go and trade places to woo his tiny scorned almost intended. Helped by the equally as helpless Gamora and Nebula on how to do so.

pairing: steve rogers x platonic child!oc
summary: shortly after getting out of the ice in 2011, Steve finds out that the descendants of one of his friends live on New York, and he decides to visit them, thinking that maybe he won’t have to be all alone anymore. thanks to this, he finds a family for him in this new time.
content warning: brief mentions of death.

Tumblr media
Doubt had started to creep in as Steve hesitated on the doorstep, staring at the wooden door in front of him. An elderly man had opened the building’s door for him, recognising him from the news, or maybe from a museum exhibit — he was supposed to be ancient history by now, but yet there he stood. The second World War had been almost seventy years ago, and while having lived it, Steve was barely thirty. And his friends were dead, as he should be.
That was why he was standing in front of the apartment, really. It turned out that according to SHIELD’s extensive database, a past teammate of his, Dum Dum Dugan, had family living in New York, close to where he lived in Brooklyn. It was a no-brainer that he had to visit, at least drop in to see what had become of something he’d known. Something that wasn’t a grave. (Or Peggy Carter, of whom he didn’t want to think about too much, for the sake of his heavy heart.)
He would be intruding in their life, he knew that. It was probable that none of them ever wanted a super soldier in their house, stirring up memories from long ago, which was why he decided that, in reality, it was a bad idea from the start. He heaved a sigh and turned around. Maybe next time he would have the courage to go in. Third time’s the charm, isn’t that how that goes?
The sound of a lock turning made him stop on his tracks. The door to apartment 9B creaked, and Steve had to look down to see a head peeking from the small opened space left by the door. It was one of the kids he’d seen on the files, barely ten years old and grinning up at him like she knew something he didn’t.
“Hi,” breathed Steve, tripping on air as he made his way back to the door.
The girl giggled, sharing a look with someone still hiding behind the door. “Hi. You’ve been standing there a whole lotta time, Mr. Steve. Are you tired?”
He blinked. Maybe she did know something he didn’t.
“You know who I am?”
“Yeah! It’s the second time you’ve been to our house, but you never go in. Daddy says to give you time, but I think you need a little push,” she said, big green eyes looking up at him. “So this is me pushing you. Come on in, Dom even had time to bake some cookies while you were there!”
She made a motion of inviting him in, but as she walked towards what he guessed must be the kitchen, he stayed on the doorway. He knew her name was Flora, she was ten and a half, and barely four feet tall, which was short for her age. She was in fifth grade in a primary school in Brooklyn, and she already knew she wanted to be a doctor. Steve knew all these things about her, and he was a stranger to her — yet she was so trusting.
She turned around to look at him, a cheeky grin on her face as she said, “We have star sprinkles for you, Mr. Steve. Dad said maybe you wouldn’t like them, but Dom and I thought it would be so funny. Do you like red, white and blue sprinkles, Mr. Steve?”
It had been a while since he’d been around children, so he was unsure if Flora was some special case, or if all kids talked that much in so little time.
He managed to smile at her, about to answer—
“Flora!” a man’s voice chided, and Steve looked the other way to see who couldn’t be other than Ronan Dugan, her father, and Dum Dum’s grandkid. Ronan’s gaze settled on him, and he could see the apology swimming in his eyes. “Mr. Rogers, I’m so sorry about my daughter’s enthusiasm. They’ve just been excited to finally meet you.”
“They have?” he asked Ronan, startled. “I don’t mind it, it’s… refreshing, actually. And call me Steve, please.”
His eyes lingered on the girl running into the other room, her giggle echoing off the walls, and he was reminded of little Rebecca Barnes, who had just turned twenty the last time he’d seen her, which had been… a long time ago. She was probably dead, too.
“Director Fury told me you’d been asking around about us,” Ronan said, “and if there’s something my kids are, is nosy, so they found out about it.”
Steve had almost forgotten that detail. Most of the family had or was currently working for SHIELD both as agents on the field or offices, ever since Dum Dum had become one of the founding members of the organization—it was their legacy, and they clearly treated it like it.
Ronan stepped closer, lowering his voice. “If you think this is too much, I totally understand. You’re not obligated to be here, Steve. I can tell the kids you were called aw–”
“Nonsense,” he rapidly said. He didn’t know if he would have the courage to try again otherwise. “I’d love to meet all of you, if it’s alright with you.”
“I’m afraid Flora and Dominic would kick me out of my house if I kicked you out,” he joked, bringing an easy smile to Steve’s face. “You can leave your jacket on that hanger, by the way. The kids are in the kitchen, when Flora sensed you coming they started baking, as I’m sure she told you.”
Steve hesitated at the strange choice of words, but thought nothing of it and closed the front door behind him, hanging his aviator jacket. Soon he was being met with the smell of freshly baked cookies coming from the kitchen, where he could see Flora and a much taller boy, Dominic—who liked to be called Dom, as his file said.
As soon as he saw him, the teenager perked up, stretching a hand toward him.
“It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Ro– Sir… Captain America,” he rushed the words out endearingly in a nervous manner.
Steve shook his hand, briefly surprised by the strength of his grip. “Call me Steve, Dominic.”
“Then you can call me Dom,” he replied, with a grin.
He glanced at the countertop, where Flora was working very hard in concentrating on handling the sprinkles she had told him about by the door. In the time he’d been deciding on whether he would enter or not, they had baked cookies that looked very appetizing—all with the color of his uniform, the flag of the United States.
The kitchen was bigger that the one he had at his apartment, which made sense given that it was for a family of three. It was cozy, and lived in, noticeable on the way the fridge was filled with stickers and photos stuck to it with magnets of places they’d visited—he felt a sudden sensation of longing in the way this house screamed home, a stark contrast to the cold place that awaited him just two blocks away.
“Can you eat cookies?” asked Flora, bringing him out of his evaluation of their home. “Dad isn’t really allowed to, he’s supposed to be on a diet.”
“I can eat pretty much anything,” he confessed, with a smile. “And however much I want, thanks to being a supersoldier.”
“Great, because we made too many cookies!”
“Come on, Flora, there’s no such thing as too many cookies,” said Ronan, bringing one to his mouth. “Especially when they taste this good. I might have to ban you two from the kitchen, eh? Not all of us can eat without getting fat.”
Steve laughed at the dig, and took the cookie that Dom was offering. His eyes widened. “This is really good.”
The kids high-fived each other, bright smiles on their faces for a job well-done.
Tumblr media
“What’s that?” asked Dominic, lazily pointing with his index finger to the leather notebook in Steve’s hands.
They had brought the trays to the living room and had turned on the television, and Steve had gotten it out of his pocket when something interesting had shown up on the News, ready to write it down for later.
“It’s where I write general knowledge events that I missed, so I can learn about them,” he said, handing it to him. “Director Fury gave me some of those, but I’ve been collecting them ever since I woke up.”
Flora stood behind the couch, reading the notebook from over her brother’s shoulder. “Steve, you’re missing a lot of stuff! I can’t believe Mamma Mia isn’t there,” she whispered in shock.
He hummed, recognizing the name. “That’s a song from ABBA, right?”
“And only the best musical of all time!”
“Says a ten-year-old,” laughed Ronan, sharing an amused look with Steve.
“Whoever recommended just Star Wars has clearly never watched Star Trek,” said Dom, a frown on his face as he read.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” breathed Steve, brows knitted together. “I tell you what, you both can write whatever you think I’m missing from this century—“
“—and the previous one,” piped in Ronan.
“And the previous one,” he agreed, and hesitantly looked at the kids. “And maybe you could show me some of it?”
Their eyes lit up, excitement shining in them.
“You are so watching Mamma Mia!” squealed Flora, running out of the living room.
Steve’s eyes followed her as she left, Ronan’s laugh filling the room. “You have a problem in your hands, she’s getting her CDs from her room.”
A beat passed.
“What’s a CD?”

The Vanishing of Will Byers
November 6th, 1983
Hawkins, Indiana
Catherine Henderson was sat in the basement of the Wheeler's house, watching her brother, Dustin, and his friends play their game of Dungeons and Dragons. "Something is coming." Mike Wheeler, the younger brother of Nancy- one of Cat’s best friends- announced, leading the game as the dungeon master. "Something hungry for blood. A shadow grows on the wall behind you, swallowing you in darkness. It is almost here."
Cat focused her attention back on her book, hardly paying attention to the game. Despite having babysat the majority of the boys’ games, she still didn’t have a clue as to how it worked. She would rather be hanging out with Nancy upstairs while she waited for her brother to finish his game, but the brunette was busy talking on the phone to the third friend in their group, Barbara Holland. This didn’t upset Catherine too much, she wasn’t Nancy biggest fan when the girl spoke about boys, Steve Harrington in particular. It just reminded her of bittersweet memories.
"What is it?" Will asked quietly. He was also the younger sibling of another one of Cat’s friends, Jonathan Byers.
"What if it's the Demogorgon?" Dustin suggested.
"The what?" Catherine asked, lifting her head from her book to look over at the group. She hadn’t heard them mention this particular creature in previous games.
The boys ignored her, continuing with their game. "Oh, Jesus, we're so screwed if it's the Demogorgon." Dustin added, shaking his head.
"It's not the Demogorgon." Lucas told him.
"An army of Troglodytes charge into the chamber!" Mike yelled suddenly, placing a mini figure onto the game board. Cat sighed, turning back to her book. She understood very few of the words that the kids spoke during their Dungeons and Dragons sessions.
"Troglodytes?" Dustin questioned.
"Told ya." Lucas chuckled, smug as he had been right about the monster not being a Demogorgon.
The boys chuckled for a moment before Mike whispers, "wait a minute." He paused. “Did you hear that? That… that sound? Boom… boom…” He yelled again, slamming his hands down onto the table. "That didn't come from the Troglodytes. No, that... That came from something else." The boys all looked at Mike expectantly before he slammed a figure onto the table and exclaimed, "The Demogorgon!" He yelled as the others all groaned in annoyance.
"We're in deep shit." Dustin pointed out.
"Language!" Catherine chided her brother. Dustin simply responded by sending her a glare, knowing hers was always a lot worse.
"Will, your action!" Mike told the small boy.
"I don't know!" The young Byers cried, shaking his head.
"Fireball him!" Lucas suggested.
"I'd have to roll a 13 or higher!" Will pointed out to him.
"Too risky. Cast a protection spell." Dustin suggested.
"Don't be a pussy. Fireball him."
"Cast Protection."
Mike slammed his hands down onto the table. "The Demogorgon is tired of your silly human bickering!"
"I'm tired of your bickering too." Catherine muttered. "But at least the whatever it is isn't real and gets a break from hearing your voices." She rolled her eyes.
"It stomps towards you." Mike continued. "Boom!"
"Fireball him Will!" Lucas yelled.
"Another stomp, boom!"
"Cast Protection." Dustin yelled.
"He roars in anger!"
The boys all continued to yell over one another, telling Will what to do.
"Would you all shut up!" Catherine cried out, having had enough of the racket. At the same time, Will yelled, "Fireball!" and rolled the dice. They all watched as it rolled off the table and onto the floor.
"Oh, shit!" Mike exclaimed as they all stood up to look for the dice.
"Where'd it go?" Lucas asked as they began to search on the floor. "Where is it?" Catherine sat back on the couch, content now that they'd finally stopped yelling.
"I don't know!" Will spoke, answering Lucas's question.
"Henderson, help us look for it!" Lucas yelled, turning towards the eldest Henderson.
"Nope. I wasn't playing and therefore I don't have to help you." Cat retorted, not even bothering to spare a glance from her book.
"Kit, please help us." Dustin begged, pausing his search to look over at her. "Please, please help us look for it."
Cat rolled her eyes, sitting up in her seat. She looked down by her legs, peering at the small area of floor by her feet. Upon seeing nothing, she sat back on the sofa and turned back to her book. "There, I've looked, and I can't see it anywhere near me. You're welcome."
The younger Henderson rolled his eyes at her behaviour. "Is it a 13?" He asked, turning back to his friends.
"I don't know!" Will replied, shrugging his shoulders. “I didn’t see it before it disappeared.”
"Where is it?" Lucas asked again, becoming increasingly frustrated.
"Oh, my God!" Dustin repeated over and over again while he paced the floor of the basement.
"It's just a dice." Cat snapped. "You're panicking over nothing."
"Nothing?! This isn't nothing, Henderson." Lucas shouted at her. "It's a life-or-death situation."
"It really isn't, Sinclair." Cat retorted, just as Mrs. Wheeler yelled Mike's name from upstairs.
The boys continued panicking about the dice while Mrs. Wheeler opened the door to the basement. "Mike!" She called and the boy looked up at her from where he was stood at the bottom of the stairs.
"Mom, we're in the middle of a campaign!" He complained her.
"You mean the end? Fifteen after." Mrs Wheeler told him, pointing to the watch on her wrist before walking away from the basement, Mike running up the stairs behind her to try and plead for more time to finish their campaign.
"Oh, my God! Freaking idiot!" Lucas yelled to no one in particular. After a few more minutes of searching, Will announced to the group that he’d found the dice.
Cat dramatically threw her head backwards against the sofa. “Finally!” She cried, throwing her arms up into the air. “Does that mean we can leave now?” She asked, watching her brother start to grab his jacket.
"No!" Lucas snapped, to which she just rolled her eyes.
"Does the seven count?" Will asked, looking to Lucas.
"It was a seven? Did Mike see it?" Will shook his head. "Then it doesn't count." Lucas told him.
"I believe that's called cheating," Cat stated, marking the page of her book with her bookmark, and putting it in her backpack.
"No one asked you, Henderson." Lucas snapped at her.
While the boys gathered up their belongings and started to head up the basement stairs. Dustin stopped, noticing the pizza box only had a couple of slices left. "Yo, hey, guys." Dustin called to them, and Will and Lucas stopped on the stairs for a moment. "Does anyone want this?"
"No." They both responded, shaking their heads and hurrying up the stairs.
Dustin turned to Cat who had just finished zipping up her backpack and had started putting her arms through the sleeves of her jacket. "You want this, Kit?" He asked, holding the pizza box out towards her.
“No, that’s alright. Thanks though, Dusty. Just leave it here or throw it in the trash." She finished putting her jacket on and started to walk up the stairs, Dustin following behind her.
“I’ll meet you outside. I’m gonna see if Nancy might want it.”
Cat shrugged her shoulders at him. “I doubt it, but that’s sweet of you Dusty. Just make sure you hurry up, alright? Mum wanted us home…” She looked at her watch. “Oh shit. She wanted us home at least an hour ago.”
Dustin nodded, leaving up the stairs to the second floor of the house while Cat headed towards the front door. She made sure to stop in the kitchen and thank Mrs. Wheeler for allowing the boys to hang out in their basement, before heading outside to wait for her brother.
Catherine was just climbing onto her bike when Dustin walked out of the Wheeler's house. "There's something wrong with your sister." He grumbled to Mike who was standing outside while the others got their bikes together.
"What are you talking about?"
"She's got a stick up her butt." Dustin explained.
"Yeah." Lucas agreed. "It's because she's been dating that douchebag, Steve Harrington." He rolled his eyes.
Cat couldn’t help the scoff of agreement that left her lips. Ever since Nancy had started dating the most popular guy in school, Steve Harrington, she barely spoke to Cat about anything else. Every conversation ended up relating back to Steve and it had started to get on Catherine’s nerves.
Steve Harrington used to be her best friend up until he dumped her for popularity when they started high school, and unfortunately, he happened to be the guy that Cat was totally head-over-heels for. A fact that she wouldn’t admit to anyone except her best friend Barbara Holland, and that was only because the redhead had figured it out before she had.
"Yeah," agreed Dustin. "She's turning into a real jerk."
"She's always been a real jerk." Mike argued.
Cat shook her head. “Not true. We used to be able to have conversations that didn’t always involve talking about her boyfriend.”
"Exactly.” Dustin agreed. “She used to be cool. Like that time both she and Kit dressed up as elves for our Elder tree campaign."
"I told you never to speak of that again." Cat muttered as she started to cycle to the end of the Wheeler's driveway.
"That was four years ago!" Mike called out as the boys began to follow Cat down the drive.
"Just saying." Dustin called back as he cycled after his sister, who was now cycling quite fast down the road.
"Later." Lucas called back to Mike with a wave as he disappeared down the hill.
***
The three boys and Cat had been cycling for a short while before they approached Lucas' house. "Good night, ladies. And older Henderson." He called, starting to turn into his driveway.
"Kiss your mom 'night for me." Dustin called to him as they continued to cycle down the road. "Race you back to our house?" He asked Will. "Winner gets a comic."
"Any comic?" Will asked.
"Yeah." Dustin confirmed and the two boys began racing on their bikes down the street.
"You know I could just buy you both one?" Cat called to them, but she didn't get an answer and she began cycling faster to catch up to the two boys she was meant to be looking after.
She cycled as fast as she could down the hill, catching up to Will who was winning the race.
"You sure you don't want me to cycle with you to make sure you get home safely?" She asked him, slightly out of breath from the cycling.
"No thanks, Cat. I think I'll be fine." Will told her.
Cat nodded. "Okay then. Be safe." She called out to him as she stopped her bike next to her family's mailbox. She watched him cycle away, waiting for Dustin to catch up with her before the siblings walked their bikes down the driveway.
***
The next morning, Cat awoke with a bad feeling in her stomach. Deciding that it was probably just irrational anxiety about the upcoming school day, she decided to ignore it and instead just get ready for the day. She threw on a black and white stripped t-shirt and a pair of overalls that she had painted yellow stars onto the front of. Grabbing her toothbrush from the bathroom, she hurriedly squeezed toothpaste on it before shoving it in her mouth to brush her teeth. As she started brushing her teeth, she ran back out of the bathroom and ran down the stairs to the phone. She grabbed the phone off the wall and dialled, pacing back and forth while she waited for the other end to pick up. After a couple of rings, the person at the other end of the phone picked up.
"Jonathan!" Cat greeted her friend down the phone, although you could barely make out what she was saying as her toothbrush was still in her mouth.
"Hey, Cat. What's up? That is you, right?" He asked through the receiver.
Cat ran over to the sink to spit the toothpaste out of her mouth, phone still in hand before she answered. "Yes, it is me. Sorry." She placed her toothbrush next to the sink and begun to run the tap. "For the record, I was brushing my teeth. Also," She stopped running the tap and picked an apple from the fruit bowl, taking a bite from it. "Am I cycling to yours this morning?"
"Yeah sure. I'll give you a lift to school from mine, like usual."
"Sweet. I'll see you soon Byers."
"See you soon, Henderson."
Cat hung up the phone, took another couple of bites from her apple before throwing it in the trash and running back upstairs to her room so she could get her shoes. She grabbed her trainers, shoving her feet into them as quickly as she possibly could before running back out of her room, calling out a goodbye to Dustin and her mom. She shut the front door behind her and hopped onto her bike before racing down the street to the Byers's house, not noticing the porch lights flickering on and off behind her.
***
Roughly twenty minutes later, Cat reached the Byers' house and hopped off her bike. She leaned it against the wall next to the door. Her fingers pushed the doorbell, signalling her arrival. "Its open," called a voice from inside the house, which Catherine recognised as Jonathan's. She pushed open the door and saw her friend standing in the kitchen cooking breakfast.
"Well, that smells nice. What 'cha making?"
Jonathan turned around and smiled at his friend who had perched herself on the kitchen counter next to the back door. He was about to reply when Joyce Byers' voice rang through the house. "Where the hell are they?"
Cat looked at Jonathan in confusion. "Keys." He simply said and Cat nodded her head in understanding.
"Jonathan?" Joyce called out from the living room.
"Check the couch!" He suggested.
"Ugh, I did." It was silent for a moment before Joyce announced that she'd found her keys. She walked into the kitchen just as Jonathan started dishing up the breakfast he had made.
"Hi Mrs. Byers." Cat greeted.
"Oh, hi Catherine. I didn't hear you come in." Joyce walked over to the teen and gave her a hug. "And call me Joyce. You practically live here, anyway, might as well call me 'mom'." She chuckled and Cat let out a short laugh.
Joyce picked her bag up from the table, saying goodbye to her eldest. "Okay, sweetie, I will see you tonight."
"Yeah, see you later."
Joyce went to leave but stopped, realising that Will wasn't in the kitchen. "Where's Will?"
"Oh, I didn't get him up yet." Jonathan turned around to face his mom. "He's probably still sleeping."
Joyce sighed. "Jonathan, you have to make sure he's up!" She stressed.
"Mom, I'm making breakfast."
Joyce shook her head and walked off down the hall towards Will's room. "I told you this a thousand times." Cat heard Joyce say, "Will! Come on, honey. It's time to get up."
"I think it was pretty late when they left last night so he's probably still really tired. I think Dustin was, although I didn't really see him before I rushed out of the house this morning." Cat told Jonathan, raising her voice a little so Joyce could hear her too.
Joyce walked back down the hall to the kitchen. "He came home last night, right?"
"He's not in his room?" Jonathan asked.
"Did he come home or not?" Joyce asked her son.
"I don't know." He replied, placing the plates on the table.
"You don't know?"
"No." Jonathan stammered. "I got home late. I was working."
"You were working?"
"Eric asked if I could cover. I said yeah. I just thought we could use the extra cash."
"Jonathan, we've talked about this." Joyce told him.
"I know, I know."
"You should have called me. I wouldn't have minded babysitting him until you guys got back." Cat spoke up, quietly so as to not involve herself in the arguing.
"You can't take shifts when I'm working." Joyce continued at Jonathan. "Or at least ring Catherine and ask her to babysit. She wouldn't mind." She gestured in the direction of the girl.
"I honestly don't mind looking after Will. Or any of the boys, really." Cat added.
"Mom, it's not a big deal. Look, he was at the Wheeler's all day. I'm sure he stayed over."
Both looked over to Catherine who was still sat on their kitchen counter. “Um, well, not to my knowledge. I cycled with them all home. I even asked Will if he wanted me to cycle back with him to make sure he was okay. He didn't want me to, said he would be fine. But maybe he came back here and grabbed some stuff and headed back to the Wheeler's for the night." She shrugged. "I didn't see his bike outside this morning."
Joyce sighed. "I can't believe you." She mumbled; the words aimed at her Jonathan. She walked over to the phone and dialled the number for the Wheeler household.
Cat had another thought. "Or maybe he left extra early this morning and that's why I didn't see his bike out front." Jonathan shrugged in reply as Joyce started speaking into the phone.
"Hi, Karen. It's Joyce." There was silence for a moment as Karen Wheeler spoke on the other end of the phone. "Was that Will I heard back there?" She asked. "Will didn't spend the night?" She was starting to sound worried. Cat shared a look with Jonathan as if to say, 'I told you so'. "Um, you know what? I think he just left early for... for school."
Catherine threw her hands up in the air as she whispered to Jonathan, "That's exactly what I suggested." Joyce thanked Karen and hung up the phone. She looked really worried.
"I'm really sorry Joyce." Cat hopped off the counter and walked over to the woman to give her a hug. "If I'd just have followed him back here, you would know where he is."
Joyce wrapped her arms around the teenager, "It's okay. We'll find him. It isn't your fault."
Cat pulled away from the hug and looked at the clock. "Shit. I've got to go. Jonathan, are you still able to give me a lift today? I mean I could always cycle to school today. Or... or I could stay and help you look for Will?"
"You get to school dear." Joyce told her. "I'm sure if Jonathan drove you, you'd get there in time."
Jonathan nodded his head, grabbing his car keys and headed outside to his car, telling his mum that he'd be back soon.
"I'll come by after school. I'm sure Will's fine. He's got to be." Catherine gave Joyce one more reassuring hug before rushing outside and jumping into the passenger seat next to Jonathan. She pushed down any guilt that started to bubble up. She should have insisted on walking Will home, then they'd know where he was.
***
A little while later, Jonathan’s car pulled to a stop in the carpark outside Hawkin’s High. Catherine’s hand hovered over the door handle as she undid her seatbelt. “Thanks for giving me a lift, Jonathan. You didn’t have to. I know you’ve got a lot going on today.” She grabbed hold of her bag from between her feet, pushing the door open slightly.
“It’s no problem, honestly. Besides, it’s our routine and I was gonna drive into town anyway.”
Cat hummed, pushing the car door open further and placing one foot on the tarmac. “I take it you’re not coming into school today.” She turned her head to look at him and the boy shook his head. “Well, I’ll pass on any work that you miss.”
Jonathan smiled at her. “Thanks, Cat.”
Catherine nodded at him. “No problem.” She gathered her belongings into her arms and stepped out into the chilly November air.
“Hey, do you need a home this evening?” Jonathan called, just as she was about to shut the door.
“Oh shit, I left my bike at yours.” Cat sighed. “Yeah, I probably will. But if you can’t, I’ll get the bus. See you later Byers.” She waved with her free hand as she slammed the car door shut.
"See you later Henderson." Jonathan called, sending her a wave as he drove off.
Catherine took a moment to herself before she turned and began heading into the school. Spotting Nancy just a few feet in front of her, she called out for her friend. "Hey, Wheeler!" She called, shoving past people in order to reach the girl. "Hey, Nancy! Wait up!”
Nancy finally heard her and stopped walking, turning around to face Cat. "Oh, hey Cat. I didn't see you."
"Or hear me, apparently.” Cat chuckled.
Before either of the two could say anything else, Barbara fell in line with the two of them and began walking on Nancy’s other side. "So, did he call?" She asked.
"Did who call?" Cat asked them, not understanding.
"Steve. And keep your voice down, Barb."
“Ah, yes. Of course, Steve.” She sighed, rolling her eyes. When were they not talking about Nancy's significant other, Catherine's ex-best friend and secret crush?
"Did he?" Barbara asked, nudging Nancy’s arm.
"Yeah, Nancy, did your pretty little boyfriend call?" Cat asked, clearly mocking the girl. She didn't mean to, but it was becoming annoying with how often Nancy talked about Steve Harrington.
"I told you, it's not like that." Barbara gave Nancy a look, knowing she was lying. "Okay, I mean, yes, he likes me, but not like that."
"Then like what? How does he like you if it's not 'like that'?" Cat asked. "I've seen him look at you and it's very clear how much he likes you."
The three girls approached Nancy's locker. "We just... made out a couple times." Nancy told the two other girls as she opened her locker. Catherine leaned on the locker next to Nancy's, watching her friends.
"'We just... made out a couple times.'" Barbara mocked Nancy, using a dreamy voice. "Nance, seriously, you're gonna be so cool now, it's ridiculous."
"No, I'm not." Nancy disagreed.
"You are. You totally are, Wheeler." Cat told her, looking completely bored as she leaned on the locker next to her friend’s.
"You better still hang out with us, that's all I'm saying."
Cat nodded her head. “Yeah, I can’t afford to lose another friend to the popular asshole clique.” She half joked.
"If you become friends with Tommy H. or Carol-" Barb started, being quickly cut off by Nancy.
Nancy shook her head, waving her hand at the pair. "Oh, that's gross. Okay, I'm telling you, it was a one-time..." Both girls raised their eyebrows at Nancy. "Two-time thing."
Cat rolled her eyes as she watched Nancy pull a note out of her locker. "What's that you got there, Wheeler?" She teased.
Both Barbara and Cat leant over their friend’s shoulder to read the scrawny handwriting: “Meet me. Bathroom. -Steve.”
“You were saying?” Barbara asked, a hint of sarcasm in her voice. She smiled teasingly at the small blush forming on Nancy’s cheeks.
Catherine excused herself from the two girls. "I've got to go. See you two later." She couldn't help it, she couldn't help the feeling of jealousy that was bubbling up inside her. She hated it. She hated how jealous she was because Nancy got to date Steve Harrington, the guy Cat had been practically in love with since they started high school (even if he did dump her for popularity). It was ridiculous, feeling like this when her friend was just simply being happy. But, Nancy was getting a better status while Cat was still being picked on and bullied by everyone else except her three friends- Jonathan, Barbara and Nancy. And though Steve wasn’t one of the people that picked on her, he didn’t exactly stop his friends who did. Hell, most days he didn’t even acknowledge her existence.
Cat pushed her way through the crowds of students to the bathroom on the opposite side of the school, not wanting to be anywhere near where Nancy was meeting Steve. She shoved open the door to the stall furthest from the entrance and sunk down to the floor. She locked the door before burying her face in her knees, forcing herself to not let the tears fall from her eyes. They would be stupid tears anyway. It’s not like Nancy knew of her crush on Steve, the poor girl wasn’t doing anything wrong. She was simply going after a boy she liked, and Cat was trying so hard to be supportive of her friend, but she couldn’t sit through any more conversations that circled back to being about Steve. It was becoming too much.
But the tears began to fall anyway, and pretty quickly she found herself crying in the girls’ toilet. Her thoughts drifted to poor, small Will Byers and she couldn’t help but feel guilty for his disappearance. She was supposed to have cycled him home. That was her job as the group’s unofficial babysitter. But she let him cycle home on his own against her better judgement, and now his family didn’t know where he was. How could she visit their house again, how could she show her face to the Byers knowing it was her fault that Will wasn’t there with them.
She let the tears fall until the bell rang to signal the second period of the day. She ripped off some of the toilet paper, making sure to wipe both her eyes and her nose, before picking herself up off the floor. “Pull yourself together.” She whispered to herself, hand hovering over the door handle. “There’s no need to be jealous of Nancy. They’re gonna find Will. He’s gonna come home. They’ll find him.” She repeated the last phrase in her head over and over as she unlocked the stall door and washed her hands. “Everything’s gonna be okay.”
***
“Ah, man. This is it.” Lucas sighed as the cycled down the hill towards the woods. After being pestered by the boys once they’d all arrived home from school, Catherine had agreed to come out and help them look for Will. It didn’t take much to get her to agree to help. The guilt was beginning to eat her up inside and she didn’t want any of the other boys to disappear while looking for their friend, especially not her brother. It would kill her. The only problem was that she had unfortunately forgotten to grab a jacket before Dustin had dragged her out of the house to meet the other two outside Mike’s house.
They came to a stop at the edge of the woods where there was a piece of police tape strung between the trees. Cat let out a sigh as she dismounted her old bike. "You three stay close. Okay? I'm not having any more of you kids going missing. Not while I'm around. You got it?" They all nodded. "Especially you Dustin.” She pointed to her younger brother. “Mom would kill me."
Dustin nodded his head at her, jumping off his own bike. "Hey, guys. You feel that?" He asked the others as thunder rumbled in the distance. "I think maybe we should go back."
"No." Mike said, determined to find their friend. "We're not going back. Just stay close, like Cat said. Come on. Just stay on channel six. Don’t do anything stupid." He parked his bike before starting to walk through the forest and the rest followed, leaving their bikes behind.
"Hey, Mike." Cat called out to him after a few minutes. "Did Nancy have any plans tonight? It's just, she rarely hangs out with me outside school anymore."
The younger Wheeler shrugged his shoulders, glancing back at her. "Um, all I know was that I saw Steve climbing through her window when I left." Cat couldn’t help the frustrated sigh that left her lips.
"Do you have a crush on him, or something?" Lucas questioned her. She simply rolled her eyes at him, deciding to give a verbal response.
"Kit's like totally in love with him." Dustin blurted out.
"I'm gonna kill you, Dustin." Cat muttered angrily, shaking her head disappointedly at him.
Mike pulled a face of disgust as he looked over to her. "You're in love with Steve Harrington? He's an asshole." He pointed out to her, rolling his eyes.
Catherine sighed softly. “Yeah, I know. I know he is.” She turned sharply towards her brother. “Dustin, you are so dead for telling them. That was a secret.”
"How was I meant to know it was a secret?!" Dustin argued back to her. “You never specified!” The two siblings began to bicker as the group walked further into the forest.
***
The rain had begun to fall a lot harder with the sound of thunder growing louder the deeper they walked into the woods. Drenched head to toe, Cat was cursing herself for forgetting to wear her coat. With each step the group took, they yelled out the name of their friend. And the more that their voices echoed around the dark trees, the more the that Cat’s worry grew.
"Guys, I really think we should turn back." Dustin spoke up after a while of finding no sign of Will.
Cat nodded her head, wiping drops of rain from her face. "I agree. It's not safe out here." She wrapped her arms around herself in hopes that she would be slightly less cold. She wasn’t.
"Seriously, Hendersons?" Lucas snapped at the siblings, annoyed they were already willing to give up their search. "You wanna be a baby, then go home already!"
"We're just being realistic, Lucas!" Dustin yelled back while Cat simply scowled at the younger boy.
"No, you're just being a big sissy!" Lucas shot back.
“No! You’re not being realistic, Lucas. It’s dark and it’s beginning to storm.” Cat shouted over the noise of the rain and thunder. “We’re not gonna have a good chance of finding Will like this. There’s more chance of us ending up like Will than finding him by wandering around the woods at night!” She stressed to him.
"Do you ever think Will went missing because he ran into something bad?" Dustin asked them out of the blue.
"Don't say that. God, please, just don't suggest that." Catherine pleaded, hoping that wasn't the case and he was just seriously lost. She didn't think she could live with her herself if something seriously bad had happened to him. If only she'd just insisted to walk him all the way home... She leant her back against a nearby tree, holding her head in her hands.
"And we're going to the exact same spot where he was last seen?" Dustin continued.
“This is a bad idea.” Cat muttered into her hands, shaking her head. “This is the worst idea any of you have ever had.” She straightened herself, grabbing hold of Lucas’ arm and beginning to turn around with the intention of heading back to where they’d left their bikes.
"Henderson, what the fuck are you doing?" Lucas shouted, yanking his arm out of her hold.
"I'm taking you guys back. And you're all going to go home." She ran a hand through her sopping wet hair. "I knew this was a bad idea. God, why didn't I stop you three? Why didn't I just cycle home with Will and made sure he got home alright? Ugh, this is all my fault. This is all my fault."
"May I remind you that we have no weapons, or anything. At all." Dustin pointed out as the boys ignored Catherine’s demanded to turn back.
"Dustin, shut up." Mike said to the curly haired boy as they continued to walk further into the woods.
"I'm just saying, does that seem smart to you?"
"Dustin’s right. This isn’t smart.” Cat voiced her opinion. “Why don’t we come back in the morning when it’s light out and hopefully not raining. Or, you know, let the police do their jobs and look for Will themselves.” She shrugged her shoulders sarcastically.
"Shut up. Shut up." The group finally stopped bickering and they heard what Mike had been trying to listen for. Somewhere nearby was the rustling of leaves. “Do you guys hear that?" More rustling could be heard, and the group quickly pointed their torches at the trees. Cat stood in front of the boys to make sure whatever was near them couldn't harm them. There was more rustling, and the group sharply turned to their right to see a girl stood in a long, drenched t-shirt, eyes wide with fear. At least, she looked like a girl- it was difficult to tell between the dim light and her shaved head.

OC in Fifteen
I was tagged by the always-lovely @winterandwords for this tag game!
Rules: Share 15 or fewer lines of dialogue from an OC, ideally lines that capture the character/personality/vibe of the OC. Bonus points for just using the dialogue without other details about the scene, but you're free to include those as well!
Tagging back @winterandwords because I can never get enough, plus soft tags for @dontjudgemeimawriter @frostedlemonwriter, @artdecosupernova-writing, @sunset-a-story and @kd-holloman
In the spirit of keeping with my goals for this year (and also because I need fifteen pieces of dialogue and a lot of my brainrot-WIPs at the moment don't necessarily have that) I'm going to do this for Latrell, of Absent That Night fame (noting these are mostly random lines, not really character-revealing):
I "So here's a fun question," he said, leaning back in his chair.
II "I know." Nox grinned now, flashing startlingly white teeth. "You're gonna help me catch the guy that did." "No I am fucking well not."
III "If you have a problem," Latrell said, breaking the silence, breaking his rule, like he always ended up doing here, in this situation, with Ronan, "Feel free to elucidate any time."
IV "Well, fuck that," Latrell snarled. "I'm done. I'm not working with a fucking criminal, especially one who has yet to provide any assistance. I'm gonna find whoever killed Carrie, but I'm not fucking looping you in on anything else. We're done."
V “You’ve claimed it wasn’t you, and then blackmailed me into helping you prove it, and then assaulted me with the Orn when I protested. Far as I’m concerned, we’ve established fuck all.”
VI “Yeah,” Latrell snapped, swiping up the mug and inspecting it, mostly so he didn’t have to look at Nox’s smug face. “That’s totally what it is, not that I’ve got a fucking felon on my doorstep.”
VII “What,” he gasped out through his protesting lungs, “The fuck?”
VIII “Fair? What the hell would you know about fair? Half the words that come out of your mouth are fucking lies, apparently you spent half of last night fucking following me around, and—” “I wasn’t—” “—and you act like you’re not even doing these things!”
IX “I’m loathe to agree with anything you say.”
X “I do not give a single fuck about your best interests. I just don’t wanna mess up my hands.”
XI "What sort of maniac builds an aquarium underground?"
XII “It’s… complicated, alright? And I’ll go into more detail when we get there. Just figured I shouldn’t spring it on you right after you’ve just met our favourite felon.”
XIII “And because you can’t be lying to me.” Wretched. Pleading. Begging. “You can’t.”
XIV Latrell said, “I’d kill a man for some caffeine.”
XV "Say I believe you." He didn't. He didn't. "Why would you tell me this? Now?"

Day 17: "Hey! Don't skip Taylor Swift, asshole!"
Ship: Hangman x OC (Savannah/Sav)
These will be posted eventually on AO3 I'm just taking my time lmao.
I really like posting these as a side story- I'm not planning to focus on Jake and Sav in the main deester storyline but I do like sharing what I'm thinking for the various characters and the difficulties they may face.
-
Savannah had seen chaos. She’d witnessed Jake’s family go through all the emotions in about thirty seconds, she’d watched Jake himself on base doing his usual duties but with the confidence and cocky attitude that drew her to him initially. She’d watched him drive the three and a half hours to Santa Barbara to drop off the twins only to have them climb back into his truck before he could make the trek back home which meant he’d had to organise with his ex a new custody agreement for the next couple of weeks.
This... this was chaos.
-
“Hey! Watch it!”
“Dad!”
Jake put down the suitcase he’d been taking out to the car, poking his head into the backseat. Of course, Austin had decided to put his little brother in a headlock and Ronan had squealed for his dad considering the twins had a good couple of years on him. Dallas was pressed to the other side of the car in her seat, her eyes on her book and not her brothers trying to kill each other.
“Austin, get off your brother.”
“But he-“
“-now.”
Savannah rounded the corner at the perfect time, poking her head into the car through Dallas’ open window.
“What’s wrong, boys?”
“I want the window seat! How come Austin always gets it?” Ronan complained loudly. Jake and Sav exchanged looks.
“You’re the smallest, Ronan, you’re the only one who can sit comfortably on the middle seat,” Savannah explained to her son. He crossed his arms.
“That’s not fair!”
“Ronan-“
“-alright, how about we make a deal?”
Both boys looked to their father, very interested in said deal. It was his best method of fixing arguments.
“Austin, you can have the window seat on the way; Ronan, the way back. Deal?”
“That’s bullshit,” Austin said very confidently for a ten year old. Jake blinked and Savannah had to turn away to stifle her laughter.
“Alright, I get it, you’ve been hanging out with your Uncle Javy too much. Mind the language, buddy. What do you think would be fair, Austin?”
“I want the window seat the whole way- why can’t Dallas swap with Ronan?”
“Leave your sister out of this,” Jake said patiently, “and work with me here. Ronan wants the window seat too, why don’t you want to share with him?”
“The middle seat’s too small!” Austin bellowed, scaring Dallas. Savannah sucked in a breath, opening the car door.
“New plan; Dallas, honey, could you hop out for me?”
She did as asked. Savannah rounded the corner to the back of the car and pulled the suitcases out, folding down the seventh seat then gesturing for Dallas to take the sixth in the very back.
“Do you want to sit in the back? Give you some space from the boys.”
“I want the back seat!” Ronan yelled, arms crossing over his chest. Jake facepalmed.
“Kid, sometimes you just have to take the loss. Now you all get window seats.”
“But dad-“
“-ah! We are not starting the roadtrip with tantrums. You either take the window seat or you can go stay with uncle Roos and aunt Dee.”
Ronan stomped his foot, about to have the world’s best tantrum for a five year old, and Jake promptly scooped him out of the car to talk to him. Savannah brushed a hand over Dallas’ hair.
“Okay, Dal?”
“Okay,” she muttered, “just want to go. Does he have to have a meltdown about everything?”
“I know it’s annoying, Dallas,” Sav reassured, “but he’s five and everything is a lot when you’re five.”
Dallas crossed her arms over her chest but didn’t push it further, climbing into the seat offered to her and putting her earbuds in. When Ronan came back around with Jake he happily hopped into the other seat with window views and Jake winked at Savannah.
-
For some reason neither adult could explain, they’d decided to drive back to Texas rather than fly with all three kids to go and see Jake’s youngest sister graduate from college. Bailey was a force of nature and she’d managed to graduate with great marks for what she’d been through in the last three years. Now, she was applying to grad schools and her family had cut her off as they had Jake fifteen years ago. There was no discussion of going to see them whilst in Texas; they hadn’t called or visited since Ronan was two and that was the way it was going to stay. Bailey often stayed with her brother on her semester breaks, working in coffee shops in San Diego or babysitting for the Daggers. She often looked to Jake for advice faster than any of her other siblings and it showed in their bond.
The first full day of driving they reached the other side of Tucson, Arizona and called it quits; the simple reason being Ronan and Austin hadn’t stopped their squabbling and it was making both parents twitch. Poor Dallas had put her earbuds in and wasn’t speaking to either of her brothers for the time being. She looked to her stepmother helplessly when they got particularly loud, overwhelmed, and Sav had sent her a sympathetic look in response before reaching over to touch Jake’s arm.
“Wanna stop for tonight? It’s warm enough; the kids could go swimming in the hotel pool.”
Jake had agreed and they’d pulled into the first chain hotel they could find, making sure there were enough beds so that the kids wouldn’t have to share or Ronan wouldn’t be stuck between his parents. The kids immediately got changed and Sav stretched out on a lounger to watch Jake chase them around the pool, hopefully tiring the boys out whilst Dallas sat on the edge and kicked her feet. Savannah called her over at one point, patting the sun lounger beside her.
“Come tell me what you’ve been reading lately; did you finish the Narnia series?”
“I found it hard, but I thought it was really interesting.”
“What are you reading at the moment?”
Dallas held up her book.
“It’s called Artemis Fowl; it’s all about a kid who...”
Savannah sat up and listened to her explain the book series, a tale of fairies, a criminal mastermind of a child (which said a lot, she’d heard about Jake’s antics) and joining forces with said fairies. She stopped abruptly and went to apologise for rambling but Savannah touched her arm.
“No, it sounds really interesting! Have you got all of the books?”
“I have three but there’s eight in the series.”
“That sounds like you’re going to be busy! Maybe we could go and look for them in a bookshop when we get to Texas, huh?”
Dallas lit up.
“Really?”
“Of course, honey. I can see you really enjoy them and I think your dad would say the same thing.”
Dallas’ eyes drifted to the pool, where Jake had Ronan on his shoulders and was pretending to dodge Austin’s playful attacks. She frowned.
“He doesn’t care; he only likes the boys.”
“That’s not true, Dal.”
Almost on cue, Jake turned his head and called for his daughter, taking Ronan off his shoulders to extend his hands out to her. Dallas put her book down and got into the pool, swimming over to him. Savannah smiled at them, shoulders relaxing as she watched Dallas ease back into being with her father.
-
“Is Dallas okay?”
Sav propped herself up on her elbow in the hotel room bed, frowning at Jake.
“She was feeling ignored, baby. Sometimes I think the boys demand more of your attention and she can’t get what she needs from you.”
“Fuck.”
Jake winced. He sat up, running a hand through his hair.
“I don’t want any of my kids to ever feel like that. Sometimes it’s hard, y’know, the boys can be a lot, and Dallas just... she doesn’t fight like they do for my attention.”
“She shouldn’t have to. Don’t make it her fault, it’s not her fault.”
Jake hummed.
“I know that... what do I do?”
“Show, don’t tell.”
As they’d finished relatively early on their first day of driving, the following morning Jake got the kids up relatively early and let Sav sleep in as long as she could whilst he wrestled them into breakfast and getting into the car. Dallas quite happily climbed into her seat beside the luggage and closed her eyes. Austin and Ronan immediately started squabbling but Jake was quick to shut it down.
“You two have been nothing but stubborn and rude since we left San Diego. Either you work it out or you say nothing to each other the rest of this trip. Dallas and your mom don’t need this, clear?”
The boys exchanged a look, then promptly buckled their seatbelts and shut up. Jake passed them their iPads and reached into the back to make sure Dallas was comfortable before going to wake his wife up. She was halfway out the door when he found her and they shared a quick kiss, Jake brushing his hand down her arm.
“The boys are now on silent until they can be nice,” he said to her. Sav rolled her eyes, patting his cheek.
“Sure they are. C’mon, we should get going if we’re going to make today the big day.”
-
They got into Austin late that night, having pulled a twelve hour day to cover the rest of the distance and give themselves a day to recover before Bailey’s graduation ceremony. All three kids were asleep and Sav pulled Ronan out of his carseat to carry him inside. Jake woke Austin and sent him to follow her into their hotel room then folded down the middle row to pull Dallas out. She was asleep, exhausted from the stress of travelling, and Jake took the opportunity to press a kiss to her hair.
“Hey, Dal,” he whispered, “we’re here. Want to hop out for me?”
She shook her head but gathered her books, eventually climbing out of the car to stretch her legs. Jake took a moment to realise how much both twins had grown recently, Austin almost to his shoulder and Dallas not far behind. He took a breath and caught Dallas’ arm, pulling her into a hug.
“Dad?”
She sounded confused. That hurt even more.
“I’m sorry it seems like sometimes I get caught up with your brothers, Dallas.”
She frowned into his shoulder.
“Okay...?”
“And I want you to know that you are just as important to me as them, alright?”
She glanced up at him, green eyes meeting green, and sent him a smile that reminded him of her mother.
“I know.”
“Okay.”
Silence. Finally, Dallas yawned into his shoulder.
“Good talk, dad.”
She grabbed her bag and went to head into the hotel. About halfway there she whipped around and ran back to hug him again, then disappeared into the room. Jake smiled to himself as he grabbed the suitcases.
-
“You’re late, asshat.”
“You try wrangling two preteens and a five year old.”
Bailey’s faux-irritation dissipated as her older brother came up the steps and she stepped into the hug offered. When they separated she opened her arms and the twins ran to her first, shortly followed by Ronan.
“Hi guys, look at you! Goddamn, when did you get so tall?”
She poked her tongue out at Jake.
“And when did you get so old?”
“Bless you,” Jake replied flatly but he was battling the shit eating grin everyone knew so well. Bailey opened her arms to Savannah as well.
“I’m so glad to see you! Thanks for coming.”
“We weren’t gonna miss it! Graduating college is a big deal.”
Bailey’s eyes softened and Jake swallowed when he realised she was feeling the way he did when he graduated from flight school. Phoenix, Rooster, Dee and Coyote had clapped and cheered for him the loudest considering his family hadn’t even bothered to show up. Jake cleared his throat.
“You want dinner? My shout.”
Bailey smiled.
“As long as it’s your shout.”
-
On the way to the restaurant Bailey sat in the last row of seats beside Dallas and they had an animated conversation all the way through traffic. Jake glanced at them when they pulled up and Dallas had the biggest smile on her face that he’d seen since they left San Diego. They got out and the boys immediately began squabbling but Savannah took them by a hand each and guided them into the restaurant without a word. They got the gist and shut their mouths, following her into the restaurant. Jake smiled when she watched Bailey take Dallas under her arm, sending him a wink.
“Sorry dad, you’re just not cool,” she said in passing. He blinked.
“Bailey- hey, Aunt Bailey, you’re not cool either!”
“Cooler than you!”
-
The next morning Jake took Dallas with him over to Bailey’s to help with graduation prep, meeting her boyfriend at the door. The kid’s eyes widened at the sight of him but Bailey shoved Jake to the side to let her boyfriend in with an eyeroll at Dallas. They went into the kitchen and Bailey cleared her throat, hiding something behind her back.
“Hey, J?”
Jake turned from where he’d been glaring down her boyfriend, an eyebrow raised. He couldn’t remember the last time Bailey had used that nickname.
“Yeah?”
She passed over the envelope and Jake took one look at the front then smiled.
“S’this what I think it is?”
“I was too scared to open it,” she confessed. Jake frowned.
“I thought you were staying here for grad school?”
“Jake.”
He flicked open the envelope and pulled out the piece of paper, skimming over it. Eventually, his eyes lifted to his little sister.
“Full ride to San Diego? Bailey... I’m so proud of you.”
Her eyes widened.
“Full ride?”
“That’s what it says.”
“Oh my...”
“I had no idea you’d applied to San Diego. Bailey, that’s incredible. Congratulations.”
Bailey’s eyes fell to the counter and she took a deep breath. When she met his gaze neither admitted to the happy tears.
“You’re gonna help me pack right?”
“That’s real cute,” Jake snorted, but he pulled Bailey into a hug.
“That’s the result of your hard work. Just enjoy it a little while.”
“Dad! Taylor Swift is on!”
Jake turned his head toward the living area where Dallas had lifted her head from the couch, eyes excited. Jake pretended to huff, ruffling her hair.
“Well, it’s about time for football, so I guess we should change the channel-“
He felt something hit the back of his head.
“Hey! Don’t skip Taylor Swift, asshole!”
When he whipped around Bailey was smirking at him and the towel on the floor told him exactly what had happened. Dallas’ eyes widened but she burst into giggles at the interaction between her dad and aunt. Jake turned to his daughter, raising an eyebrow.
“What do you think, Dal? Would it be okay to see Aunt Bailey more often?”
“Can we?” She asked excitedly. Bailey shrugged.
“I think it’s a possibility- oof!”
Bailey caught Dallas mid-air when she excitedly leapt from the couch to hug her, glancing up at Jake in surprise.
“I can’t wait,” Bailey whispered into her hair. Jake cleared his throat, turning around to go back into the kitchen and text his wife (cry).
