You know what scene always seemed really out of place to me? This one:

Like, it doesn’t make sense here. We had a whole season of angst and anger, and suddenly it’s like we have old Brio back for just this moment. It’s light and comfortable. No animosity, no resentment. Rio tells her he LOVES her new business idea when just the last time he saw her he told her the idea was only good for the “basura.”

Look at her, even she can’t believe it. He’s smiling, walking lightly with a little spring in his step. The man even TWIRLED, he was so happy to be in this empty building with her.

So what suddenly happened to go from this:

Does Rio seriously need so little from Beth that even at their absolute lowest – before he’s fully healed, before Lucy’s body is fully decomposed, before it would make any sense for him to forgive her… All he needed from her was just a whisper of possibility that she might choose him?

He knew she was skimming. He knew she was cash-heavy. He probably thought the hot tub story was all BS. Hence his swift judgment in calling it trash and laughing at her when she initially brought it to him. But what? He saw she actually got a showroom and it was all real, and he was just so relieved and elated that she wasn’t lying to him that he was ready to throw it all down right then and there?

It’s almost a parallel to what she was doing to Dean. Dean was so desperate to have his wifey back he would believe anything she said. And she told him pretty lies and made him feel “like a man,” making him think she believed in him. When in reality she was setting up a front to keep being shady with her crime husband. Who evidently, like Dean, was so swept up by her commitment to him and his crimey ways, that he got some pep in his step and offered to 🍆 her down in a hot tub. 😂 Even the way they discussed her want for independence was soft and gentle. The way he told her to “next time empty the clip” was almost loving. A little smile on his face. Soft voice, soft eyes. “See you soon, yeah?”

This was also the first time they were really alone together in a vulnerable moment since El Musgo. Rio didn’t bring Mick and we gotta wonder why that is. The only answer is that he wasn’t afraid of her or his feelings for/about her at this moment. He wasn’t afraid to show her a little emotion and he wasn’t worried if she showed him hers. He must have felt chosen here. He must have viewed her new operation as something she set up for them. The same way Dean believed it, Rio believed this to be a fresh start for the two of them.

I keep rewatching this one moment between them and trying to make it make sense. What does everyone else think?

while we’re all brainstorming ideas for how ‘velma’ could have been a good ‘edgier and more mature modern take on scooby-doo’, i have an idea!

the mystery gang are given more 21st century redesigns. no more bell bottoms, some of them start wearing sneakers, shaggy wears a baggy hoodie, stuff like that.

they still have their usual color palettes and individual styles (shaggy’s clothes are baggy and comfortable, daphne is stylish and fashionable, etc), but they dress more like present-day highschool students. but, obviously, no designs are too detailed that they’re hard to animate and their designs shouldn’t date the show by being too specific to the trends of the 2020’s.

but, in one episode, crystal cove high has a “60’s themed” school dance, and the mystery gang attends in their original outfits!! maybe some extra 1960’s flair could be added just for fun, too. and the episode could have other references to the og series as well. the episode could have other 60’s references and easter eggs scattered throughout the episode.

later in the episode the gang has a classic benny hill theme chase with the villian, and, when it stops, scooby says “reja ru!” (deja vu). then fred, being a himbo, leans over to daphne and says “since when does scooby speak italian?”. daphne naturally gives him a “???” look, but before anyone can react to what fred or scooby said, the trap goes off and the bad guy is caught. episode continues from there.

there’s so much potential with the mystery gang. it sucks that velma (2023) hates its source material so much.

Can someone please explain to me why Rio’s last name isn’t Manolo?

Because it REALLY seems like his last name is Manolo.

Like, sure, it could have been some alias he gave Boomer. But that whole professional relationship isn’t very clear and Boomer appears to know him a lot better here than he did in season 1. He knows he’s a “solid guy,” meaning he expects Rio’s word to be historically good, presumably from previous interactions. They evidently made some sort of deal and Rio wanted him out rather than having him taken care of on the inside, which would have been much quicker and easier. This all implies that Boomer gained knowledge of Rio’s real name and him using the name Manolo may be reliable information.

And would Rio really hide his last name? I would imagine he’s known to law enforcement and to his fellow “coworkers” by his actual last name. Beth and Ruby don’t seem too surprised by the use of the name Manolo. They’re more skeptical about the “solid guy” assertion.

If you compare this to the way Beth reacted when she found out his first name is Christopher, there’s a marked difference to her demeanor.

Visible surprise here. She was expecting the name Rio (not Brian,) but the neighbor said Christopher. And then confirmed the apartment number so Beth knew it was him.

I also want to point out that if you google the name Manolo…

…the first result is this random Wikipedia page that says a sculptor named Manolo’s real name was Manuel Martinez. Coincidence? Probably. 😂 This probably just discredited my entire argument and made me seem insane. 🤪😜
