I'm in the first month of treatment for hypothyroidism, and it's an interesting time.
After the first week, I was like "agh! Why does it take so long to start working???" I started googling, but it took a WHILE to penetrate the surface layer of minimal instructional info.
Finally found some stuff, though. My vague understanding is that the supplemental hormone (after a bit of processing) sends a set of instructions to my cells like, "Hey, you should be building the proteins that make it so we have a metabolism!"
Then my cells are like, "Yes boss!" and they get to work copying out the instruction manual and setting up construction. But it takes about 2 weeks for them to cook up the first really big batch of proteins. (And then six weeks to fully fill out the deficit, assuming I got the right dose.)
Also, one website said that the first sign that it's working is when you stop feeling quite so cold all the time. It was reassuring because I did notice feeling warmer about a week in, while my overall energy levels were still dropping.
At day 10, stimulants started working again! 🥳 But when the coffee wore off I was just as tired as ever 😦
[Interlude while my body realizes it has regained the ability to menstruate with gusto. This reminds my brain to dig up and process some trauma I hadn't had bandwidth for a couple weeks prior.]
Now my overall energy levels are starting to stabilize some. And my body is adjusting to a new activity level. I'm so hungry. I have an old ankle sprain that only acts up when I'm seriously getting into shape, and yesterday it acted up worse than ever, just from running around tending to my own basic needs.
(Fortnately I know how to physical therapy my way through that shit. It's already most of the way better.)
So yeah. I'm really excited that I'm feeling better, and that I'll probably feel even better in a few more weeks. But it's weird how much work it takes to rebuild a core component of your metabolism from the ground up 😩🤔
