Before the wreck of the Titanic was found on September 1, 1985, it was widely accepted the ship sank in one piece. When Robert Ballard started his search for the wreck in 1985, artist Ken Marschall painted this painting to submit to the National Geographic.

"Proposal painting of a sunken Titanic submitted to National Geographic in May 1985 in hopes that if the wreck were found that summer they might hire me to illustrate for the magazine. I was not."

Later, Ken drew several pieces of artwork of liner that was used in several publications.

At this time 111 years ago today, 2,240 people were preparing to sail on the grandest ship in the world. Bags were being packed, goodbyes said and well wishes given as Titanic's passengers set off for her three ports of call: Southampton, Cherbourg and Queenstown. For 1500 of those people, it would be the last goodbye they ever gave their loved ones 💔

I still wish that there was a larger amount of subjectively "recent" Titanic footage to look through. I know it's really expensive and I know Oceangate Expeditions is trying to keep documenting it but like. I'm genuinely so fucking heartbroken knowing the Titanic will probably erode completely within my lifetime. Seeing the total collapse of the Captain's Cabin felt like a sledgehammer to the chest. I totally love projects dedicated to what the Titanic was like in her prime, but none of that compares to the absolute beauty of her current rusticles and bamboo coral and sea life and Halomonas Titanicae, life where there should be none. I just can't stand the thought of it being gone before we can- if nothing else- properly document her final resting place before we lose our chance at seeing her ever again
