“The diet of the people deteriorates as capitalism develops.”
Lenin was writing about artificial substances in food as it is more costly (less profitable) to produce healthy food. He continues:
“[...] workers earn so little that they have to buy cheap, low-grade, substitute food products.”
“[...] And so the output of cheap substitutes is growing daily and hourly, along with the unheard-of luxury of a handful of millionaires.”
— V.I. Lenin (1912)

The sinking of the Titanic in 1912 was enough to make any traveller nervous. John Edlund of Claresholm, Alberta, however, was not going to let the matter of a mere iceberg or two keep him from traveling by sea. An inventive person by nature, in 1915 he created and patented the perfect waterproof suitcase, which could double as a life preserver if worse came to worse on the high seas.
