Ok, spoilers ahead, and I'm going off what I remember watching the movie recently but

RE Vendetta is the funniest of the CG RE movies because it has:

Plenty of background characters getting absolutely deleted from existence after ending up in the crossfire of the main characters versus the main antagonists (one poor woman gets shot to literal PIECES by a machine gun, like you SEE that)

Leon causing problems on a freeway with infected dogs that has other poor innocents caught in the crossfire, complete with explosions and carnage

The use of a rail gun that LITERALLY impales holes into not one, not two, but THREE buildings as far as we can see while causing only a certain amount of damage towards the main villain

Poor infected people who end up cured by the end of the movie, but those poor people who got mauled/eaten by said people??? Sucks to be them, LMAO

" We did it Patrick, we saved the city! " Cue seeing the city in fucking shambles from the points above, leaving me to wonder how tf they cover this up (supposedly)

Chris doing a dodge roll tango with the main villain cause of course they do that (its actually hilariously fun to watch)

Leon having his bike survive probably the longest out of any other time he has a bike and he actually does kick ass majority of the movie yet the man still gets ragdolled by a B.O.W cause of course he does, its Leon

Like literally, the man is depressed after Damnation and such, but the moment he gets in the saddle of action again, the man's on the warpath, with double trouble when fighting alongside Chris

Rebecca going THROUGH IT this entire movie but she flexes herself pretty well regardless. [Thumbs up emoji] as per usual afterwards, bless her

my family has spoken of this movie wistfully for decades. we saw it, once, perhaps, in an earlier age, and remembered it—not for its plot, passable enough, nor for its remarkable CG achievements (first completely digital protagonist), not for the hapless charm of Bill Pullman. no, we are a family of Building Appreciators. we wanted to look at that *house* again.

and now we have.

a service I have access to finally re-acquired the rights, probably seasonally, to stream the 1995 Casper movie, and I have avidly re-watched it with my mother for architectural reasons.

ye gods, the sets. the sets. I need to speak to the art director and the production design team and the set dressers like. how were the decisions made. cause I need to analyze this house. I couldn't tell if it was sets or a Location for the longest time, because they really heckin' Committed, but the consensus (and my architect uncle joined the council after some time as well) ended up at yes, it's a set, but they looked at the Gaudi apartments in Barcelona and the doors in Prague and the Vienna metro stations because we recognize those curves and proportions.

I suspect I am going to spend awhile Appreciating this thing now that I have acquired it again, but for now, just revel in the Grand Pan of Foyer Reveal.

i understand how hard it is, i go through the same thing sometimes, especially after therapy <3.

these are tips that help me:

-> going into a small yet comfortable space: sometimes i create my own little dens, sometimes i just sit in the bathroom for a while, sometimes i’ll make a little blanket nest to feel secure in.

-> music! music! music!: i find that music helps stim my mind a little, find a category you like that comforts you & use that to help fight out those thoughts. for me it’s country <3.

-> do small & rewarding tasks: i’ll do small tasks such as eating a piece of fruit, drinking water, cleaning up the table, just small things to give myself positive re-enforcement.

-> comfort toys/blankets: use these to help ground your emotions & protect yourself in a way. for me, it’s my yellow blankie- i have to have it on me when going through impure regression, it helps protect me from the nasty world.

-> activities: i use this for bad meltdowns or bpd episodes too. it’s basically where you use an activity such as writing or painting or colouring to try and rid it from your brain and onto paper. with impure regression, i find that sometimes finger painting helps as it’s both sensory & stimulating.

-> rewards! rewards! rewards!: try to reward anything and practically everything, use positive words instead of negative ones. talk to yourself in third person & just be kind to yourself.

-> movies & tv: watch uplifting cartoons or movies, for me childhood shows such as: tom & jerry, scooby doo, garfield help me but yours can be whatever you like.

also remember that you’re not bad, none of it was your fault & you will get through this. remember that it’s a marathon not a sprint & we learn as we grow <3

Revisiting Gakuen Handsome: Backstory + short review

I think every BL fan has seen something related to Gakuen Handsome at some point in their lives, it's a parody BL visual novel with quite the legacy. It was originally released in 2010 by Team YokkyuFuman and it also got its own OVA and anime adaptation in 2015 & 2016. The protagonist, who is an unnamed seventeen year old boy, moves back to the city after a seven year absence. He enrolls into Baramon High School, a prestigious all-boys school which takes pride in being the best of its prefecture. From now on, his life will be changed forever...

First of all, the developer team's backstory is probably one of the most unique ones. In 2008, eight film students from the Tohoku University of Art and Design formed Team YokkyuFuman (チーム欲求腐満). Their blog mentions that a year later, they attempted to submit the Gakuen Handsome opening movie to the 9th edition of the Niconico Film Festival (their submission was completely ignored). After that, the opening movie was uploaded on NicoNico Douga, where it was quite well received. The description of the video mentions “to be released in 20009”, as they originally probably had no intention to create a full game.

After it became a hot topic on NicoNico Douga, their university gave them permission to organize an official exhibition: Gakuen Handsome Matsuri (or just Gakuen Handsome Festival). Visitors could watch the opening movie, learn more about the characters and take pictures together with the life-sized cardboard cutouts. The exhibition also featured rare merch: A drama CD which would be released in "20009" and canned bread.

This exhibition was apparently not only held once, but many times according to their blog. The game was finally released in 2010 and many fans were happy to finally play it, supporting the team that created it. Togo Mito, who many of you know as the creator of (in)famous BL game Hadaka Shitsuji, also collaborated with them. These are some pictures I found on Togo Mito's old blog, Mizoguchi and Juro drawn by Togo Mito and the Hadaka Shitsuji cast drawn by Team YokkyuFuman.

Even after graduation, it seems like they would occasionally invite some of Gakuen Handsome's creators. In 2014, the university tweeted that they would not be able to host the exhibition that year due to renovations, but visitors could take pictures with the cardboard cutouts. There's also an interview from 2016 on the university's website, in which they talk about how things have been after graduation! I absolutely love how the university supported all of this.

Now about the game itself... Where to even start? You'll have to trust me, but the game is actually good. Many parody games can be quite a hit or miss, but this visual novel is something I still catch myself laughing at years later. The inconsistent art, pointy chins and strange jokes really create an experience unlike anything else. I don't think any commercial company would be able to create something like this, even if they tried. One detail that the anime adaptation doesn't really show is that many different artists worked on this, whose styles widely vary from each other, making absolutely no attempt to create one consistent artstyle. Most characters have at least 2 ~ 3 sprites that often look completely different from each other. For example, sometimes Saionji sensei looks like a clean-shaven teenager/young adult, but in the CGs he suddenly turn into an older looking man with a stubble.

Yes he's talking about eating paint in the screenshot above, why not. Anyway... the voice acting in this game is something else I wanted to talk about, because it adds so much to the game. Of course it's not professional, but I think that's what makes it amazing. You can sometimes hear the voice actors trying really hard not to laugh, and they will occasionally completely mess up their lines. Of course all of those lines are kept in the game and they didn't re-record them. I also loved it when they started swearing in English for seemingly no reason. Also, instead of just avoiding the name of the protagonist (who you can give any name you want) they pronounce it... by improvision. Just imagine how one would try to pronounce a "adfgdf" keysmash and you'll get an idea what it sounds like.

There are 6 characters in this game who you can romance. The protagonist's childhood friend Takuya, who is a bit obsessed with the protein bar Calorie Mate (which is censored in the new version of the game, so you just hear a BLEEP sound), outlaw teacher Saionji, school principal Juro who basically only functions as a save point, student council president Kagami, chuunibyou transfer student Shiga, and last but not least, the captain of the soccer team Mitsurugi, who also murders people with his chin sometimes. The protagonist's sister also has a (non-romantic) ending, which you need to play in order to unlock the extra scenario (which... is a ridiculous murder mystery story for some reason). I also could not find the guide I used a long time ago, so I just looked at some videos on NicoNico to see what others were doing and that worked pretty well...!

My favorite scene is probably still that one scene in Mitsurugi's route, in which he stabs people with his chin. It's also one of the scenes that gets referenced the most in fanart. The context makes it even more ridiculous, Mitsurugi gets really upset that some people like the chunky variant of red bean paste (tsubuan) and decides they should die. After stabbing his teammate and multiple other people he runs outside. The protagonist however, isn't safe either and also gets accused of being a "tsubuan supporter". If you survive though, you get a chance to marry Mitsurugi!

Honestly one of the reasons I wanted to write about this game is because many people only know the OVA and/or anime, but the game is so funny I think everyone should play it if they're interested. I also think the team behind it has such a funny backstory and I love seeing how supportive their university is. Right now the team is still active on their Twitter account and they sometimes create new content. Last year they released Gakuen Handsome Fighters, a short fighting game featuring the Gakuen Handsome characters.

If you are interested in purchasing it, I recommend getting the "Special" edition which can be purchased on DLsite! I couldn't find a working download link anymore of the older version, but I think the creators deserve the support, so I don't regret buying it (it was about 15 USD). It includes the original game and 5 shorter stories which were originally released as smartphone apps. While I think the original game is still the best one, it's fun to explore some of the extra scenarios as well. One of the shorter games takes place in an alternative universe in which the boys live in the Heian period, and for some reason some of the sprites are animated... yeah.

Steve paces restlessly beside your bed, re reading all the medicine labels that Bruce gave him, he’s been doing it for the past ten minutes and it’s about to drive you and Bucky up a wall.

“Darling, I know they’re sick but please calm down a bit.” The super soldier soothes a hand down Rogers back, playfully rolling his eyes to you which makes you giggle even in your ill state.

You had woken with a fever and horrid cough, something that has caused immense stress to Steve in particular, meanwhile you and Bucky have taken the opportunity to binge watch your favorite movies in bed. Sure being sick is trash, but Bucky makes it better with his jokes, and Steve has the medication doses down to a science at this point.

“Just relax with us and—.” Bucky’s cut off by a knock at the door, Steve quickly shuffles to answer it and the gasp he lets out tells you he’s not relaxing anytime soon.

“Come in, come in, my god have you been all on your own all day? Have you taken any medicine? When’s the last time you took your temperature?”

As soon as you see the haggard state Peters in when he steps farther into the room, all the questions flying out of Steve’s mouth make sense. The sight of Parker wiping his red nose with a huff at Steve’s fussing, Bucky’s face falls, his caregiver-ness coming out more from the looks of things.

“We can be sick together!” You open your arms quickly for Peter who all but throws himself into the embrace, mumbling about how warm you are even though he’s sweat through his shirt.

“You two are a mess, I’m going to go grab a change of clothes for Peter, don’t move. Bucky don’t let them move.” The three of you snort at Steve’s finger pointing towards Barnes’ face.

“Alright sick babies, you need anything?” Despite the teasing sent Rogers way, Bucky drops his tone to soft and shifts some hair off both of your foreheads.

“Lay with us?” Peter lifts his head off your chest with a sheepish smile, you encourage the ask by grabbing at Bucky’s arm til he finally collapses onto the mattress. He’s not on top of you like Peter is, rather squished into your sides, putting his arm around both of you and petting a hand at your shoulder, or what he can reach of it.

And when Steve comes back to the three of you snoring atop one another, well he can’t complain that much; but he will wake you up to take your medicine in about twenty minutes when the timer goes off.

Tell me everything you hate about Leon Kennedy so I can agree

Careful, anon, or you'll make me fall in love with you

The things I don't hate about Leon would make a shorter list and my instinct is to give you a jokey answer, but you seem genuinely curious of Leon's faults as a character so I'll do my best to explain it:

Obligatory "just because a character sucks doesn't mean you have to hate them, and I'm not saying people can't like Leon, I'm simply expressing why I personally don't" statement for those with no reading comprehension <3

My biggest reason for hating him is the misogyny. Leon's most prominent trait is his continued misogyny. And while this previously was brushed off as "the writing of the time" in which the games/CG movies were released, that is no longer an excuse, because 1. Leon is still being written as a misogynist, just in a different context, and 2. There are other RE male characters who were never written to be misogynistic, such as Chris Redfield, and there are RE male characters who were originally misogynistic but have been rewritten to no longer be, such as Luis Serra. And of all of the RE male characters who were originally written to be misogynistic, the only character who has maintained that misogyny despite remakes is Leon. This makes it no longer just a reflection of the early 2000's writing, it now becomes a facet of his actual character. And while Leon's misogyny is no longer as blatant and bold as "following a lady's lead just isn't my style", or making demeaning comments on a woman's butt, or scoffing and spitting "women", it is still a part of his character.

Especially in relation to Ada Wong. The way he treats Ada is like a stereotypical reddit incel who experienced one breakup and now hates/disregards all women in his perceived dating pool. Ada never fully revealed who she was to Leon, she never promised him the truth, and she never expressed a want to allow him to see the real her - in fact, she did quite the opposite, constantly trying to push him away. But Leon - being a man who sees a woman in a dangerous situation as someone who needs his help, despite Ada saving his ass multiple times - sticks around. And because he knows nothing about her, he starts to create a projection of who he thinks Ada is, based entirely on the very minimal and evasive information she has given him. And yes, being lied to by anyone is not fun, especially in the middle of an apocalypse. But Ada made many attempts to get Leon to back off, to leave her be, and yet he in all his macho-heroism insisted on "helping" her, thus forcing himself into her line of work despite her warnings against it. And then, when her lie is revealed, he completely disregards his respect for her, and begins to view her as nothing but an emotionless manipulator. She refuses to shoot him, even though it meant forfeiting her entire mission, and he still actually believes she never cared about him. And when they meet again, his attitude towards her is utterly abrasive, inconsiderate, and cold. What makes this misogyny however, rather than just Leon being an asshole, is that we have another character in the same game who Leon used to admire and whose identity is revealed to be something Leon is morally against: Major Krauser. And yet, Leon entirely maintains his respect for, and his consideration for the feelings of, Krauser. Ada Wong was a mercenary who lied to Leon to keep her cover. Krauser was a war criminal who kidnapped the president's daughter, which brought Leon into this mess, and then murdered Luis right in front of Leon. And Leon has a very no-nuance, naïve, black and white view of morals prior to and throughout re4r, so if his vitriol for Ada was truly about conflicting morals, that would be reflected in how he treats Krauser, too. However, Leon maintains his respect for Krauser. Leon appeals to Krauser's honour, to Krauser's emotions. Leon actively tries to sympathise with Krauser in an effort to rationalise Krauser's actions in Leon's mind. And yet it is Ada Wong, who has saved his life countless times, who has shown him she cares, and who has helped him at no cost, who receives his ire; rather than Krauser, who couldn't care less about Leon and his predicament. This kind of misogyny is especially infuriating to me because Leon's actions are portrayed as Just™, he is still portrayed as the Correct Hero™, and the fans ignore his misogyny just as easily as the narrative itself does.

I don't hate Leon just because he's a misogynist; there's too many of those in media to hate them all for that. I hate him because his misogyny is made to be a quality of his character, and is never punished by the narrative nor is he ever forced to reconcile with it. And what's worse, the way he treats Ada is in turn perpetrated by fans who refuse to acknowledge his misogyny, and thus become little misogynists themselves, tearing into Ada with utter vitriol and no consideration for her as a character.

And obviously, not just Ada. Another modern example is how he treats Claire Redfield in re2r and Infinite Darkness. He sees her as a kid in need of protecting, despite her only being 2 years younger than him, and proving repeatedly that she's more than capable of handling herself. And when she asks when he'll stop treating her like a kid, he says "probably never". (I am strangling him I'm exploding him with my mind). But his misogyny towards Ada is the most significant and reoccurring. She has long been written to serve as the object of Leon's desires, and now that she's been given significant substance, fans hate her for no longer fitting into their own misogynistic ideal of who she should be. But that's another discussion.

There's other things I hate about him, such as his part in modern copoganda, or his arrogance, but the misogyny is the most prominent thing. And I truly admire fans who love Leon while actively acknowledging his misogyny. But to me, he has no other redeeming qualities significant enough to help me get over it.

Resident Evil: Death Island (2023)

i think i know what bugs me the most about infinite darkness, which is also just an issue with RE in general.

everytime i think to myself "oh i'll rewatch infinite darkness", i'm only ever really thinking of the first two episodes, not the last two. all of that kinda dawned on me as i got to the end of ep 2.

resident evil has some pretty fuckin cool underlying themes: corruption, biological warfare, politics, treason, foreign policy, etc. most RE entries feature those themes as a starting point behind virtually every problem in the franchise. RC started as a result of the secret development of bioweapons to which the US contributed, damnation deals with the use of bioweapons in armed conflict, etc. then you've got some sillier villain motivations because it's RE and it has to be a little silly. but essentially, it's 1. virus/parasite/mold/BOW is being developed and 2. a private actor who's trying to either make a shit ton of money or just wants to bring about chaos gets ahold of it and 3. the US government is always kind of involved, somehow (and then there's a monster with a bulging eye and the place blows up).

so you've got these recurring themes which are most of the time dealt with in a more lighthearted manner: it turns out to be a big bad guy motivated by money or power who just turns people into monsters.

now the thing about infinite darkness is that it actually has a really interesting premise. you've got the war in penamstan, which features overt commentary on the US' foreign policy and involvement in other countries (callback to wars waged in the middle east), as well as the frequent accusations that the US is trying to get back at china by whatever means necessary. this is incredibly relevant in the international political landscape, and will continue to be for a good number of years. episodes one and two don't shy away from blatant criticism of the US.

and i keep thinking "FINALLY, it's getting serious." but it never does. because it's RE, and i love how unserious it is, yet i can't help but think about how it would turn out if it went through with its themes.

i'm coming back to this draft after watching death island because DI does a similar thing, but better? i think ID is essentially overly ambitious: it sets out too many themes and events and fails to follow up on them properly. you shouldn't start a discourse on imperialism and foreign policy if you're not ready to properly discuss the matter.

DI also weighs in on the bioterrorism vs capitalism vs the US government themes, but less seriously. it's all done through dylan, who has a certain set of views on the matter and wants to use the virus to reset the entire planet. but it doesn't really go beyond that: it's just dylan going "man fuck corporations and the US government" and then blatantly destroying the core 4 by giving them the most obnoxious reality check ever (which was EXACTLY what they needed). that's all. i like this better, because RE is a very unserious franchise at heart, and it shouldn't try to be something it isn't. the climax of any RE movie is always big monster with a countdown, like the games, and there's really only two solutions to that: either capcom starts using the CG movies to expand on the lore in a more serious way by divorcing themselves from the traditional layout of the games, or they keep the same formula as the games, but then they really shouldn't get into as much detail (there's just not enough time).

Clayface!

Some story "Are you sure this kind of thing is necessary?" Basil looks apprehensive at the jar of Clayrity. This was a major role, his first major breakthrough in a big budget film. A role in which he's being asked to play another actor to playing this part. The actor who was playing the character before him had disagreements with the studio about them owning his image among other things. Carlo didn’t get much on the specifics. His agent said he stormed off in the middle of production when they refused to pay the guy extra for re-shoots costing him extra for all the scheduling conflicts and not to worry too much about it. The agent insisted on the weird make up. The man kept going on about how its the future and everyone uses it. As much as he got the feeling that his agent was trying to make it seem alright to wear someone else's face to finish the movie, it still didn't really sit all that well with him. 

"It's this or cg, either way you ain't gonna look like you." Basil’s face scrunches at the contents of the jar that’s about to be smeared all over his face. 

 "Yeah yeah I know...I just, I'll wear the damn stuff." Basil concedes as he allows the agent to rub the high tech cream on his face. 

The producer boasted about how it replaced the need for makeup artists while the director pouted about nothing getting to be real anymore taking the life out of the performance and the craft. They argued back and forth about the cost of art, the craft and the literal cost.

 All Basil could think of is the other actor as he watches him start to take shape in the mirror in front of him. This is a role like any other, he's playing the way that actor would have played that character. No pressure, no problem.  He started as the stunt double on set, wearing the costume for the intense action scenes while trying to figure out his in to a bigger role in some other films. He was able to get his foot in the door with some minor roles in some indie productions but has yet to catch a serious lead role.

This role he’s taking on is probably more than what he expected his first major role would have been. Scratch that probably, maybe, because the character he’s playing is THE pop culture icon... /// alright I got more in mind for this character. I think I want to make a video about it if I ever get into making videos about my version of batman I want to write. I'm thinking of either throwing together a bunch of scripts to work on when I finish my own comic or to write fanfiction about it. I still haven't quite worked it out yet.

One thing worth pointing out is that the team working on RE Death Island is the same team that produced Infinite Darkness.

Which means, if there's a place for Leon and Claire's relationship to be mentioned, it's in this movie.

Continuity between game/CG animation/comics and manga stories is always difficult because the teams are sometimes completely different. Ideas and details can be forgotten, or abandoned.

But now is the perfect time for many possibilities.
