Ooooh August is looking good! Alright we are already part of the way into this month, but as there are again a lot of fantastic sounding books coming out here are some of my most anticipated. Also the longer I have time to think about these the longer the lists get ... Oops. (This isn't even including the handful of really exciting sequals coming out this month.)

The Bruising of Qilwa by Naseem Jamnia
The Feeling of Falling in Love by Mason Deaver
These Fleeting Shadows by Kate Alice Marshall
In the Event of Love by Courtney Kae
The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean
Unwieldy Creatures by Addie Tsai
High Times in Low Parliament by Kelly Robson

JO Survey: What's a favorite JO moment of yours? Could be very small or something big
There were too many good answers in the questions with open answers in my Joker Out Survey, so below the cut are the answers to Question no. 14: What's a favorite JO moment of yours? Could be very small or something big
When bojan exists but also when they sung the boys are back from HSM in an interview in all the languages
Nace & Bojan completing my heart hands thing at a concert :) (& Nace showing the heart on his bass in my direction )
sparklative, the turtle interview, every interaction between jan and nace (it's hard to pick a favourite)
It's so hard to choose! Aside from repeating what I said before, I'll say I love them doing stuff with pride flags during concerts, and them hanging out together during Novi Val. Also them just wearing each others clothes. And the whole thing with Because of You during Eurovision. And Bojan singing Cha Cha Cha. And Tavastia. And Kris during the Katrina video whirling around his jacket. Ok I can't choose and I can go on forever.
When Nace started talking about his turtles
kris being a hater 🫶
how dare you make me pick one smh i guess the performance of novi val in Glasgow with the pride flag i dotn get emotional about artists raising pride flags in general even tho im queer but that specific moment in a CHURCH with THAT song made me sob
I can't choose so I've got 3: 1. WHY THIS HAS BEEN SO HAS BIVEN SPARKLY?! SPARKLING?! SPARKLATIVE?!?!?! 2. the interview where they talk about Nace's turtles ("shiiiit, they don't like to be pet!") 3. every time Bojan and Kris banter with each other 😭 and I saw this irl too when I was at their concert in London and Kris wouldn't stop playing his guitar whilst Bojan was trying to tune his
I've really enjoyed watching the behind the scenes video series' from Eurovision and the tour.
It's a tie between (i) pretty much any interview they've ever done and (ii) the Cvetličarna concert (didn't attend but have watched the footage)
Them comforting Käärijä together after his loss
Bojan's thighs lol
I really like drunk Kris at Barcelona preparty screaming "OH, SSF!" and dancing like the tall tree he is 🤣❤️‍🔥
Their joy in eurovision
"Sparklative"
The moment that Jan signed my jacket
Jan and Nace interacting on stage
Idk i love all the behind the scenes videos?
Them all singing together (see carpe diem series ep 7 amsterdam :D)
The backstage series
The Electric Ballroom gig in London & their reaction when Slovenia entered the grand final at ESC
Jan and Nace playing kazoos in the UK tour ep 2
You expect me to chose?? /j
Every Novi val performance.
anything Jan and Nace get up to tbh
Every moment in that "joker out being bros for 5 min straight" video or wtv or was called. Need friendships like that fr
don't know if it's my favorite moment per se but i do love how they all immeadiately fell in love with jere (käärijä), especially bojan ofc <3
Why has been so sparkling? ✨
Bojan draped in a pride flag in an old church while singing novi val. Top 3 moments to cry about at 3am tbh
The performance of Novi Val in Križanke. Also, this is not a JO moment as such, but a clip where Bojan imitates a german kid telling his mom he wants to jump on the trampoline(?) I'm sorry, but man's funny as fuck, I think about that clip often.
I haven't seen them live yet, so all the best moments are yet to come :)
All of them cuddles
I don’t knoww Maček in a box
kris tilting his head back, eurovision in my city, SEEING THEIR TOUR BUS IN LIVERPOOL WJEN ME AND MY FRIEND WERE OUT IN THE CITY CENTER THE DAY AFTER WE SAW THEM @ MANCHESTER
I don't know yet - there's so many moments! So many smiles and like laying their heads on each others shoulders during concerts and looking out for each other. <3
I liked how promptly they got rid of gregor on a serious level and also on a happy level when they qualified to the Eurovision final
cvetličarna
Bojan and Kaarija’s bromance
I don't know to many options
Love how often TURTOL is brought up. Nace would be proud <3

Lesbian Webtoon ‘Always Human’ to be Printed in Graphic Novel Format
Tumblr media
Ari North’s ( @walkingnorth ) Yuri webtoon Always Human as been acquired by Rachel Gluchstern at Yellow Jacket and, in association with GLAAD, will be reformated and published as a physical graphic novel. The graphic novel encompasses all of the webcomic's first season and is available in Hardcover and paperback editions.
Tumblr media
Always Human was initially published on WebToon from 2015 to 2017, encompassing two seasons. The science-fiction work is set in the future where everyone uses nanobots to modify their bodies, from their immune system to their appearance. One day, Sunati meets a young woman named Austen, who is incapable of using mods. Sunati becomes fascinated by the strange girl and asks her on a date. The series showcases their evolving relationship and their struggles to overcome the everyday emotions and conflicts that come with romance.
Tumblr media
Although firmly rooted in science fiction, the webtoon tells a very relatable and human story about two people falling in love, understanding each other, and navigating a relationship. Both seasons are available to read for free on WebToon.
The full-color graphic novel will be released on May 12, 2020, and is now available for preorder. Ebook editions formatted in the style of print books (as opposed to webcomics) will be available as well.

2. Top 5 books of all time.
Look, we all know this is an ever evolving list, because duh, but these are my desert island books … Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J K Rowling, Henry and Amy (Right Way Round and Upside Down) by Stephen Michael King, and something by Agatha Christie (preferably with Miss Marple in it).
4. What sections of a bookstore do you browse?
All of them! Well, not quite all of them, but definitely most! I haunt bookstores and scan all the shelves for new stock/stock I haven’t come across before. But I always check New Release (Fiction and Non Fiction), General Fiction, SSF, Graphic Novels, Plays, Poetry (so disappointingly small in most bookshops here), Politics, Cultural Crit, Auto/Biography, History, Art, Travel, YA, Children’s Fiction. It’d probably be quicker to list the sections I don’t browse…
6. What books have you read in the last month?
Mostly stuff for uni, but all really good! These are the ones I’ve finished. That Deadman Dance by Kim Scott (about colonisation in WA from a First Nations perspective), Heat and Light by Ellen van Neerven (just fucking brilliant! a collection of short stories about family, place, queerness, womanhood, and indigeneity), and Comfort Food by Ellen van Neerven (one of the best collections of poetry I’ve read in AGES).
8. What is the first book you remember reading yourself?
Ooooh, I actually don’t know. It would have been a picture book when I was super young. Maybe the illustrated Jabberwocky? I definitely knew it off by heart by the time I was three. Or maybe something like Elmo Wants a Bath? The first novel length book (that wasn’t one of those take home reader type things) I read myself was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when I was six.
10. Do you have a guilty fave?
I don’t really believe in guilty pleasures. Maybe rereading is mine? I often feel a little guilty because I think about ALL THE OTHER BOOKS I COULD BE READING!! But also, sometimes you just need a comfort read!
12. Did you enjoy any compulsory high school readings?
Short answer, yes! Longer answer, Erin what did we even read at school? I loved all the plays (not Cosi so much). I loved Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth and Hamlet and Street Car and Antigone. I loved Dark Roots by Cate Kennedy. I remember liking that book set in Egypt in year seven? With hindsight I love Katherine Mansfield, but at the time I really did not want to be at school so I took it out on the book.
15. Recommend and review a book.
Everyone should find me on Goodreads where I rec, but don’t do in depth reviews of books ALL THE TIME.
Because I mentioned it earlier, you should all read Ellen van Neerven’s Heat and Light. I will not be able to do it justice, but it is an exploration of desire and longing, and piecing together identity and connection. There are elements of SSF. Loads of queer characters. It’s just really fucking good!
19. Most disliked popular books.
Oh, I dunno. I’m not a massive Margaret Atwood fan. I don’t know how popular she is with other people but a load of my friends like Miranda July and I couldn’t get through The First Bad Man.

A comprehensive documentation of the ongoing anti-trans, anti-intersex and anti-black violence happening at the University of Toronto in connection to Jordan Peterson, the Students in Support of Free Speech (SSFS), Rebel Media, and various other alt-right and white-supremacist organizations.
The groups and individuals implicated in this document are seen as being highly dangerous to transgender, intersex, queer, racialized, and otherwise marginalized people. INTACT would like this document to be viewed as a public safety advisory, and recommends that members of vulnerable communities to avoid all contact and association with the implicated parties.
This document covers multiple assaults against transgender and nonbinary activists and allies; outlines a targeted online harassment campaign which is still ongoing and of which Jordan Peterson has been an active participant; and incriminates Jordan Peterson, his associated student group Students in Support of Free Speech, and the alt-right media outlet Rebel Media in the intentional manufacturing of violence and intimidation against transgender and nonbinary students and faculty at the University of Toronto as well as the broader transgender community.
Please read this document, download it for safe-keeping, and distribute it as widely as possible. The University of Toronto, as well as the city of Toronto, cannot continue to condone or tolerate the blatant ongoing violence that transgender people are being subjected to by these groups and individuals.
This document was put together through the extensive labour of the author - a valued ally to the transgender community - as well as the labour of local transgender and nonbinary activists and other valued allies. This investigation was paid for entirely out-of-pocket by the author and transgender/nonbinary community members.

Also BOOKS, GENERAL VIBES, NO PREFERENCE, ANY REP AT ALL.
Oh man, ok. SOOOOO. I’m a big sucker for SSF, so almost all of these fall into that. If you specifically want realistic fiction, let me know, because that is a whole other list.
These are some Adult SSF books that I’m really fond of right now:
Tumblr media
It’s in space! It’s a roadtrip in space with a wacky crew. One of them is a lizard.
Tumblr media
Ok, you know the Alice in Wonderland/Wizard of Oz “Portal Fantasy” trope- normal kid goes to MAGICAL OTHER WORLD and has an ADVENTURE? Ok. This is that, but for adults, very feminist, and very very queer.
Tumblr media
This book was pitched to me as “It’s like Game of Thrones, but Queer and Indigenous.” And it IS. It’s a sort of political fantasy- lots of different factions with no clear bad guy, but they are at odds with each other, and it’s all based on Pre-contact Americas cultures, and like half the cast is super queer too.
Ok, next up: YA books!
Tumblr media
Ok, so you got a whole bunch of Latinix magic users and its Dia de Muertos and the main character is a trans boy who wants to prove he has brujo magic and he summons a HOT BOY GHOST and its great.
Tumblr media
Look, there’s a LOT of “gay superhero” media out there now. Something about secret identities making for a really easy metaphor, ya know? But this one is particularly good.
Tumblr media
The ONE historical fiction (not SSF) on this list, and I will not apologize for that. Ok, so you have this charming, CHAOTIC DISASTER BI who takes his bestfriend/crush on a EUROPEAN ROAD TRIP but then there’s a mystery they have to solve too! And his sister is there to make fun of his and she is the best!
And last category for now: YA Graphic novels (I teach middle school, I have a lot of YA)
Tumblr media
There’s a WITCH who lives on the edge of town. Snap needs her help. It’s all good. There’s like, found family and cute shit.
Tumblr media
Witches and werewolves and magic and SECRET SOCIEITIES. Very cute art.
Tumblr media
I’m not even sure how to explain this one. Political intrigue with fantasy elements. I honestly wish this was a whole series. It is TRAGIC that it is only one book.

I've realized that while I do enjoy some things created by woman most of the authors and musicians I enjoy are men. And I feel like that just goes to show how music and books created by men are often put in the spotlight and how it's easier for men to be successful. So I would like some more woman musicians and authors to follow. I enjoy dolly parton , the spice girls , pink , Beyonce, Mackenzie lee , and Suzanne Collins (hunger games ) if that helps.
My musical tastes are garbage, but here are some women authors worth checking out:
NK Jemisin (SSF- I love her Broken Earth trilogy)
Octavia Butler (SSF- so many good ones. The Parable books are great)
Rebecca Roanhorse (Indigenous inspired SSF- Black Sun is SO good)
Angela Davis (mostly non-fiction political essays. Her feminism is fucking incredible)
Allie Brosh (humor, memoir. She wrote Hyperbole and a Half)
Kelly Barnhill (Middle graded/YA. The Girl who Drank the Moon is a beautiful book )
Tomi Adeyemi (YA West African inspired fantasy. Children of Blood and Bone is super cool)
Diana Wynne Jones (fantasy. Howls Moving Caslte)
Katie O'Niell (super cute queer graphic novels. Tea Dragon Society is my favorite.)
Edit: SANDRA CISNEROS! How did I almost forget Sandra Cisneros? Lord, she's wonderful. House on Mango Street is this collection of poetic little short stories that all weave together and are just breathtaking.
I'm sure others can recommend more!
