Tom Greenhalgh commented that as he listened to a great deal of country music in the early 1980s, "pretty soon the difference between the three chords of country and the three chords of punk became blurred."

Throwback Thursday #24- Pegboy- Three-Chord Monte EP (Touch & Go Records, 1990)
Many fans were extremely bummed when guitarist John Haggerty quit Naked Raygun (myself included). Those same fans were then elated to see that Haggerty was in a new Chicago band called Pegboy. This band included his brother Joe on drums, Larry Damore on vocals, and Steve Saylors on bass. The band had a tough, melodic sound with Haggerty's shiny sheet metal guitar sound racing along with Damore's raspy vocals.
This debut EP, released in 1990, was the first release for Touch & Go Records new offshoot, Quarterstick Records. It was a sign of big things to come with four fantastic songs including the soaring "My Youth" and the punchier "Slipped Through My Fingers." Of the other two songs, "Fade Away" has some of my favorite Haggerty guitar work (and great chant vocals, too) and the final cut "Method" slashes and burns with the best of 'em.
Pegboy went on to make three full-lengths and several EPs (all released in the 1990s). They do still occasionally play shows and while I'd love to hear some new music, I don’t think it’s going to happen. That's ok though, the records they have released still get played plenty in my house. This debut EP, though, is definitely among my favorites.

De Algemene Verwarring #87 - 21 februari 2023
The eighty-seventh episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Tuesday February 21, 2023, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
https://www.mixcloud.com/MedialabKortrijk/de-algemene-verwarring-87-21-februari-2023/
Pictured below are The Flying Lizards. I recently played their cover version of Summertime Blues, and recently also bought the maybe better known 7″ with their take on Money (That’s What I Want). So I’m playing that one now. More importantly, I want to thank all those wonderful people that showed up at last Friday’s party at The Pit’s, the bands Ignatz & De Stervende Honden and Christophe Clébard, the crew from the Pit’s for their help and for offering me their place to do this, and all the bands that I have played before in earlier episodes of this show. I think that most of the records I played Friday night have been featured in earlier episodes of De Algemene Verwarring, and if not, then they certainly will be featured sooner or later. I also hope all of you keep listening to the show and giving me feedback about it. Episode 88 is coming up on March 5, yes that’s a Sunday because I’m not available next Monday. See you then! And below the photo you will find the playlist for this show. Enjoy!

Vintage punk from somebody’s youth, Roller Queen by Naked Raygun from Throb Throb (1984),
Blast furnace monomania (the end). 'Punk' is preferred to hardcore, but we hate being pigeonholed. It's as bad as being corn holed. We play aggressive, melodic, intense, chanty music... We call ourselves, hmmm, bat cave funk, zydeco bop, twist and ground flailer, closet motown..." Jeff Pezzati on Naked Raygun.
This live version of Roller Queen was recorded at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago on November 20, 1987. It was released as a bonus track on the Quarterstick Records' reissue CD of the Jettison LP (1999). Video from Kansas City Bomber starring Raquel Welsh.

Yesterday, The BCPF and I went and did a couple of errands and then went to Underdog Records. Even after sustaining a swollen appendage because of yellowjackets, Jonathan was all smiles and joking around. We had a good time. We didn’t spend a lot of money, though. Every once in a while I’ll have a shopping day when nothing moves me. I didn’t really find…

De Algemene Verwarring #76 - 27 June 2022
The seventy-sixth episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday June 27, 2022, and you can listen to it by clicking on the Mixcloud widget below. And if that does not work, here’s the direct link to the Mixcloud page:
https://www.mixcloud.com/MedialabKortrijk/de-algemene-verwarring-76-27-juni-2022/
Pictured below is the Australian duo HTRK (pronounced ‘Hate Rock’). My first introduction with the band was when they played as the support act for Liars at De Kreun, according to the Wilde Westen archives in november 2007, so even before they released the Rowland S. Howard produced Marry Me Tonight album. Howard passed away just a few months after the release. Back then the band was still a trio with Sean Stewart on bass and sounded cold, repetitive and clinical with ice queen Jonnine Standish on vocals singing about sexual themes. Don’t get me wrong with the cold and clinical though, the album is still an absolute stunner and one of the records out of the bands discography I still play the most of all. After the untimely and sudden death of bassist Sean Stewart, the band continued as a duo and has undergone quite an evolution, as if they have been peeling off all the layers of their early music into what seems to be the essential: stripped down vocals, acoustic guitars, a silent hum in the background or Jonnine just snapping her fingers. It culminated in the release of last year’s “Rhinestones” LP - an album I finally picked up after the wonderful show of the band in Ghent a few weeks ago. It’s probably the most minimal and sparse sounding album of the band, that moves away from electronic music towards some sort of gothic folk - but it’s a wonderful record and I would recommend you to go buy a copy, you won’t regret it.
In this last episode of this season we’re looking forward to a few concerts the next few weeks (Stiff Richards, Low Life, June Of 44), we dance on the slow rhythms of Silent Servant and Chromatics, and we listen to new sounds of Schisms and super group Luster who just released their debut album on Morc Records. We’ll be back somewhere in August. Enjoy the summer! And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for the show. Enjoy!
