De Algemene Verwarring #105 - 22 January 2024
Episode one hundred and five of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, January 22, 2024, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Pictured below is Belgian cold wave band De Brassers. The band played their very last show last week in Brussels, saying goodbye to their audience. They released a cassette, a single and a 12" in the early eighties before drug abuse stopped the band for a while. They had a restart in a different lineup somewhere in the late nineties and have been playing shows since then, compilations and live albums were released, the legend was growing. Yes, "En Toen Was Er Niets Meer" is a Belgian classic, but you know how it goes with classics: you get bored of them, so I played another song in this episode to pay tribute to a notorious Belgian band. Oh yeah apparently it is also "week of Belgian music" this week, but as you probably know we don't care much about that, I mean, I play Belgian music if I like it and I don't play it if I don't like it, that's the whole idea about playing music that we like, isn't it? Anyway, praise to De Brassers because they have had an important influence on Belgian music history. Other music in this episode comes from Brainbombs, Death, Tyvek, The Fall, Television Personalities, Cosey Mueller, HTRK, Ekin Fil, Myriam Gendron and more. Also, there's a track from The Soft Moon. Rest in peace, Luis Vasquez. I'll never forget the Soft Moon debut record that left quite an impression on me, and of course the show in Kortrijk at the Sinksen fest, which was amazing. And as always, beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this episode. Enjoy!

9/6/23.
I've bought many items through Stranded Records - either online, their brick and mortar store, or through their label Superior Viaduct. An email from Stranded notified me of a reissue of Reet Hendrikson's amazing 1969 album "Reet". The reissue is being handled by moved-by-sound - a British label.
The Bandcamp page says it all. Reet's music is in the tradition of Vashti Bunyan, Molly Drake, Shirley Collins, Sibylle Baier and Bridget St. John. But of course this in a category all it's own as Reet's sound is heavily influenced by her native Estonia. While she and her family fled Estonia shortly after she was born (post-WWII spread of communism) her upbringing in Sweden still had a strong Estonian presence (there were actually Estonian schools!!).

A-T-3 184 Liquid Liquid - Optimo EP
Liquid Liquid's third EP on Ed Bahlman's 99 (nine nine) label. The track Cavern became a huge hit in dance clubs and on black radio station WBLS (station segregation in the US is daft) and the EP sold upwards of 30,000 copies. There are very few disco rap records that aren't based on other records, most of these were hit records of the day. Cavern's success led it to being reproduced as the backbone of Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel’s White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It), bassist Doug Wimbish reproducing the bassline, Sal P singing "slip in and out of phenomenon" becoming Melle Mels "something like a phenomenon" and other percussive bits. Sugar Hill didn't have clearance to use Cavern and court case that ensued was the beginning of the end for 99 Records, it sounds like it broke Ed Bahlman. Even though the court eventually ruled in favour of 99 Records the judgement of $600,000 was circumvented by Sugar Hill by declaring bankruptcy and 99 got nothing
Terry Tolkin [employee at 99 at the time]:“The lawsuit dragged on for fifteen months or more, and then we finally won. We won a judgement for $600,000 and a credit on the record, all that stuff. $660,000 including court costs and legal costs… There really wasn’t anything like this going on… It was very, very much underground at that point. And in the courts it was practically untested. It was in the very early days of sampling… It was a massive settlement. I remember everybody was so elated, everybody was so happy when a decision came down that day. But we never collected. Two weeks after they lost the judgement and the appeal, [Sugar Hill] declared bankruptcy. We never got anything. And the [99] store basically went bankrupt because of that.” - from an interview by Tim Ross for Tuba Frenzy
Glaswegian DJ duo JD Twitch and JG Wilkes named their legendary Sunday-night at Sub Club Optimo Espacio after the title track, with it's hosts also becoming collectively known as Optimo and their record label Optimo Music
In 1997 Mo Wax/Grand Royal compiled Liquid Liquid's first three EPs along with a recording of a live show, Domino Records do the same in 2008, and in 2015 Superior Viaduct reissued the Optimo EP and the two earlier EPs individually... they're due another reissue!
Liquid Liquid - Optimo
Liquid Liquid - Cavern
Liquid Liquid - Scraper
Liquid Liquid - Out "a chop-funk-suey rocker with an resemblance to the Fat Albert theme"

Pink Section “Pink Section” 1979, 1980/2014. Superior Viaduct Records. A collection of the very short-lived San Francisco-based art-rock/punk/no wavers who named themselves after the San Francisco Chronicle’s pink colored arts and entertainment guide. I bought this album on a whim last week while up in Appleton, WI at Top Spins (an excellent and well-curated record store that I highly recommend checking out). It’s really really weird, and really kinda great. Knowing nothing about the band, I read - and was not surprised to learn after listening to the record - that they were art students and self-taught musicians influenced by Dadaism, a “deranged domesticity and 50′s Americana gone haywire” aesthetic and Yoko Ono - included on this compilation is a cover of her “Midsummer New York”, which is heavily deconstructed and punked up. Other top tracks are “Shopping” and “Jane Blank” which you can view the band playing live here.
With a sound I can really only compare to a mashup of Devo and B-52′s on heavy hallucinogens and speed, Pink Section were composed of Judy Gittelsohn (vocals and synth), Stephen Wymore (bass, guitar, synth and vocals), Carol Detweiler (drums and vocals) and Matt Heckert (vocals, guitar, bass and sax). Gittelsohn and Detweiler went on to form Inflatable Boy Clams after Pink Section broke up. In the comments section on WFMU’s blog about Pink Section in 2008, Heckert chimed in the conversation and stated he’s done some solo musical artwork work since the early 80′s (titled Matt Heckert Mechanical Sound Orchestra, it’s so industrial that it’s just machines.)

De Algemene Verwarring #85 - 23 January 2023
The eighty-fifth episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday January 23, 2023, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
https://www.mixcloud.com/MedialabKortrijk/de-algemene-verwarring-85-23-januari-2023/
Pictured below is Mark E. Smith from The Fall, no introduction needed I guess. Probably a bit weird that only after 84 episodes we use a picture from The Fall on the Tumblr page, one of the most played bands in our radio show (and yes, we do think about the photos we use on this page, I actually have a list of the photos used so as not to use a photo of the same band twice). It’s already been 5 years since Mark E. Smith passed away, and even though I’m a fan of their older work, still he is missed. The track I played in this show, Solicitor In Studio, comes from the Room To Live album, generally considered as not one of their best, but I disagree with that general opinion. Yes, it was released in between two master pieces, Hex Enduction Hour and Perverted By Language (my favorite album of the band), but that does not mean it’s a bad album. It’s useful to read Stephen Hanley’s book to know the circumstances under which the album was recorded (not ideal, i would say), but the result is a Fall album that has its place in their discography.
By the way, I know I am a bit late with this post and the only reason isthat sometimes inspiration to write something is lacking. Let me know if you read this and if these posts are interesting for you. It would be much easier for me to just post playlists but if you’re interested in my writings about the bands I play, you should let me know and I’ll do my best to continue. Anyway, other music in this episode is from i.a. Civic, Tyvek, Mitraille, Oi Boys, Josef K, The Flying Lizards, Puppet Wipes, Non Plus Temps, The Darling Buds, Hood, and Brannten Schnüre. And below the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy!
Playlist:

Eastlink: Ansett (7” “Angel Gun/Ansett” on In The Red, 2013)

First, I’ve noticed that the 2021 releases are coming fast and furious and great. I’ve bought more music in the last 4 days than I did in the previous 2 months. Almost everything being posted is also being bought.
Ally Records (Raleigh, North Carolina) somehow has a direct connection with Graeme Jefferies - they’ve issued what appears to be a new Cakekitchen album, and are reissuing Jefferies “Messages for the Cakekitchen” (originally released in 1987 on Flying Nun).
Graeme and his brother Peter were members of Nocturnal Projections (recent reissue by Dais Records) and This Kind of Punishment (reissued recently by Superior Viaduct).
To me it’s very hard to pinpoint either Jefferies. Their voices and instrumentation are so unique. Of all the Flying Nun bands, I would say Jean-Paul Sarte Experience is the most accurate comparison. The entire album for “Messages for the Cakekitchen” is available here.
