Burning candles lined each side of the table where Rose and Kai sat across from each other with a map between them. He suggested they use Portland, Oregon as a starting point to locate the ascendant. He told her it was the hometown of the Gemini leader. He lifted the dagger and dragged the jagged edge across his palm to draw blood before dripping it on the map. In turn, Rose started the incantation: “Phasmatos Tribum, Nas Ex Veras, Sequitas Sanguinem…”
He watched, waiting for the location to reveal itself but nothing happened. Even the flames kept a consistent burn, failing to rise as they should in reaction to magical energy. She continued the chant, her voice wavering until he stopped her. “What are you thinking about right now?” he asked.
She shrugged. “I don’t know… I just don’t want to mess this up.”
“That’s your problem. If you keep imagining yourself failing, then that’s what will manifest in your spells. Magic draws on your energy and emotions.” She nodded and took a deep breath to settle her nerves before beginning again. The crimson droplets twitched before they conjoined into one surging arrow as the candle fire erupted into a light roar. Rose peaked down at the map. “Keep going. You’re almost there.”
She continued until the blood gathered in one spot, the candle flames dying out in unison. “Oh my god, it worked…” she whispered as soon as her eyes opened.
“Don’t sound so shocked. You’re a Bennett witch. You know, my coven has a long history with Bennetts. Your magic is one of the most powerful of any coven, that’s why they seal prison worlds with your blood magic.” He searched her eyes, detecting insecurity, “you doubt yourself too much.”
Her face warmed, but she didn’t avert her eyes from his. “Thank you for the advice.”
“Don’t mention it.”
Tumblr media
Without wasting time, they got on the road to Oregon, with Kai taking the first turn behind the wheel. After only half an hour on the road the silence unnerved him, prompting him to strike up a conversation.
“You never told me how you ended up here.” He glanced at her.
“The truth is, my sister Bonnie was supposed to, not me. Her life was bound to the Other Side but it was falling apart and I couldn’t sit back and let her die... again.”
“So, you sacrificed yourself for her?”
“Yeah.. I guess I did. I was looking for any way to help, then this spell practically fell into my lap. It let me switch places with her and time was running out so… I just did it.”
Confusion contorted his face “But why?”
She turned sharply, “Because she’s my sister and she always puts everyone before herself, especially me. But more than that, she’s the smartest and most beautiful person I know. If anyone deserves life, it's her,” she frowned, “if I had more time, I would have told her that.”
He wanted to ask more questions because truthfully, the idea of loving someone, let alone a sibling that much was.. puzzling, but he saw how emotional it made her, so he went the reassuring route. "You can tell her everything you need to when we get you back home."
She nodded.
After a day and a half, it neared midnight when they arrived in Portland. Rose snored softly beside him having been asleep for the better part of an hour. Kai took over the last stretch of driving, glad that she was asleep so he wouldn’t have to pretend to follow the map. He didn’t need the locator spell in the first place. The ascendant was exactly where he left it. The spell was a test that showed him she had the ability to do magic. Her low confidence and inconsistency could be an obstacle but he hoped that wouldn't be an issue come the eclipse.
They pulled up to a large white house at the end of a gravel road surrounded by a modest expanse of field and woodland. He nudged her awake before they got out and approached the house.
“The ascendant is here?” she asked, staring back at the facade.
“The spell led us to this address,” he confirmed.
An odd feeling took hold of her. Maybe it was dread, but she couldn’t quite place it. Whatever it was left her feet stationary at the cobblestone just before the porch steps. “Rose… Roseee, are you.. coming?”
She nodded and followed him, pushing down the indiscernible feeling.
Little did she know, this place had unpleasant memories for many, especially those familiar with its bloody history. Having grew to befriend his demons, Kai found a twisted comfort with the place that nurtured them through a childhood of abuse and depravation.
They searched the house together, starting with the ground floor and moving deeper until they reached the study. Her eyes locked onto the brown trunk against the far wall. She removed the heavy grimoires stacked on top and fumbled with the lock.
“I have a feeling it’s in here but the trunk is locked,” she stated. Kai searched the desk, opening drawers until he found a small key. He crouched down beside her and put the key in the lock, turning until the subtle click sounded. She reached inside, pulling out a circular piece of metal with a small reflective crystal in the center.
Before the night ended, Kai brought her down to the nearby caverns which he said would be an ideal location to access direct moonlight for the spell. Rose followed in silent awe, tracing her fingers along the granite walls that glistened in hues of blue. They stopped below the skylight which granted direct access to the moon above. “It’s beautiful,” she remarked breathlessly. He turned to her, immediately noticing the way her eyes sparkled, taking on a silvery color in place of their usual hazel hue. Her gaze met his just before he could look away and pretend he wasn’t staring.
“We should head back and get some rest. It’s been a long day,” he finished with a stretch and a yawn.
Tumblr media
Bubbles rose to the surface as he topped her glass with Pinot Grigio. Kai insisted she relax while he made dinner in exchange for the meal she made him the other night. She complied despite her desire to help, not only because she knew her way around a kitchen but also just to be close to him. His energy, his scent, the slightest physical contact gave her full body goosebumps.
Sip after sip had her inhibitions waning until her eyes shamelessly traced his body, the contour of his back, the ever moving muscles that bulged along his arms as he worked with his hands. He was saying something, but it all faded into the background. His broad shoulders were strained by his tight t-shirt, sleeves clinging to his biceps. She silently thanked him for taking off that hoodie before cooking. He poured some wine into the hot pan before bringing the bottle to his lips and taking a generous sip.
She watched with baited breath.
He swallowed then turned to her suddenly, “Do you like shellfish?”
“Yes!” She blurted out loud. If her face could get any hotter it would have, “I mean, yeah… shellfish is fine,” she murmured quietly. Kai turned back to the stove, stifling a chuckle.
They ate a shrimp pasta with a white wine reduction and finished off the bottle of Pinot. Perhaps it was the wine or the way he looked at her like she was the most interesting person alive but she felt open enough to tell him all about her life back in Mystic Falls.
Although he liked to talk, Kai was attentive to her stories, vampires, love-triangles, originals and travelers. He took particular interest when she mentioned a pair of twins, Liv and Luke Parker. “Bonnie met Liv in her occult studies class. She’s really powerful. She gave me a few lessons in channeling.”
Kai looked up from his wine glass, “what about the guy... Luke?”
Rose thought for a second, “Oh, I only met him once. He was nice and I heard he was even more powerful than Liv.”
As the meal wrapped up, he asked if she enjoyed it. “It was delicious. Where did you learn to cook like this?”
He chuckled. “I’ve had to cook for myself for almost 20 years now, so I’ve picked up a few things along the way.”
“How did you do it? Spending so many years alone without anyone to talk to must have been difficult,” she inquired.
Kai offered a strained smile, “Loneliness isn’t new to me. I've always been by myself for as long as I can remember.”
“Why?” she asked.
“My dad kept me away from my family. He said I was an abomination. In his defense, I’m not like other witches in my coven.. I can’t make my own magic. I can only siphon it from others. Ever since I was little, he forced me to stay away from everyone else or face whatever punishment he felt like doling out. Early on, I wanted to be around them, but I quickly realized it was safer to just stay to myself.”
“Kai, that’s horrible. He couldn't be more wrong about you.”
He raised his hand, “If I touched you right now, I could siphon your magic right out of your body. Doesn’t that scare you?”
Rose stared back unwavering, “I’m not afraid of you.” She closed the distance between their hands brushing her fingers against his. “I trust you and I’d let you have some if you asked, I'm not that good with magic anyway.”
For the first time, she did something he didn't expect. He could almost get lost in her soft touch and genuine eyes but couldn’t afford to. Reminding himself of his plan in which her purpose did not include making him vulnerable. His hand slid away and he rose from the table.
“I should get started on the dishes.”
“I’ll help you,” she chirped after him.
“No-no, I got it,” he insisted.
She frowned, suddenly noticing his mood change. Whether she had crossed a boundary she wasn't supposed to or the topic of his childhood made him uncomfortable (or both), she didn't push it any further, hoping that by giving him space, he would feel more at ease and open up to her about his past but clearly, that wouldn't happen tonight. Rose stood up and said goodnight before heading upstairs.

Bengiyo's Queer Media Syllabus
For those who are not aware, I have decided to run the gauntlet of @bengiyo’s Queer Cinema Syllabus and have officially started Unit 1: Coming of Age Post Moonlight. The films in Unit 1 are Pariah (2011), Get Real (1998), Edge of Seventeen (1998), My Own Private Idaho (1991), and Mysterious Skin (2004)
Today I will be writing about
My Own Private Idaho (1991) dir. Gus Van Sant
[Available for rent on: Amazon, YouTube. Run Time- 1:44]
Tumblr media
Summary: In this loose adaptation of Shakespeare's "Henry IV," Mike Waters is a gay hustler afflicted with narcolepsy. Scott Favor is the rebellious son of a mayor. Together, the two travel from Portland, Oregon to Idaho and finally to the coast of Italy in a quest to find Mike's estranged mother. Along the way they turn tricks for money and drugs, eventually attracting the attention of a wealthy benefactor and sexual deviant. (from Just Watch)
Cast:  River Phoenix as Mike a homeless queer male sex worker with narcolepsy Keanu Reeves as Scott the mayor’s son, “homeless” sex worker who is friends with Mike William Richert as Bob, I don’t have any other way to describe him besides this character is Falstaff in Henry IV.
Content Warning: mentions of sexual assault, prostitution, conversations around incest. homelessness.
So the first thing before we start, if you are planning on watching this film you have to remember this is based on Henry IV by Shakespeare. Because if you forget that (like I did until about 40 minutes in) there is going to be dialogue that makes you go “no one talks like this?????” (which honestly was not a bad thing, but remembering that it was Shakespeare did stop me from going down way too deep a rabbit hole about reality and unreality so…thank you brain! Now, unfortunately, I have not read Henry IV and also unfortunately I will not read Henry IV for the sake of being better able to analyze this film.
In hindsight, Scott is a dick and the film so perfectly sets up/foreshadows how we are going to get to where we end up with Scott, but as it is happening, it feels like a massive, unexpected punch in the gut the second you see him back from Italy, in a nice suit, in a nice car, driving blindly past his old pal Mike, who is collapsed in a sleep attack on the sidewalk.
I always love when media humanizes homeless, drug user, and sex worker communities so for me watching this film, that was a huge win. Unhoused folk, drug users, and sex workers are so fucking dehumanized in my society, and frequently blamed for their own life conditions, and considering the statistics on how many homeless people in the US are queer, and particularly how many queer youth are on the streets, it is particularly important to me that film, queer film especially, allows its audience to love, root for, and mourn for homeless queer people.

I like that you don't really know exactly how Mike got to where he is. But there is enough context with the flashbacks we get and his medical condition to understand any number of ways that Mike ends up unhoused. I think it is particularly notable that there are multiple moments in the film where a house or other form of stable shelter is destroyed in his mind. Where I appreciate not really know exactly how Mike became homeless, because in a way it feels like his entire life was set up so that was the only inevitable outcome. Scott, however, I have no idea how he got to where he is, homeless and doing sex work, when he is set to inherit his father’s fortune soon.
And looking back at how the entire story plays out, knowing that Scott will eventually abandon Mike to pursue a love interest and wealth, it makes a lot more sense as to why we never truly find out how he got there. Because for Scott, it doesn’t fucking matter. Because for Scott, he is playing at being homeless. This is a funny little game for him, he can give a middle finger to his father and act out, and struggle for as long as it is entertaining and fun, knowing that at any point he can return home, shape up his behavior, and have more money then he knows what to do with.
Which is why I am truly and deeply obsessed with the fact that Scott wears a suit when he is amongst the other unhoused folk he is living with. Because of how much that visually separates him. I like that it is serving as a reminder of his status and almost like a reminder to himself that he is actually separate from everyone else here. And this theme is repeated in how Scott interacts with his father too. Because, while he wears a suit when amongst the unhoused, when he is summoned before his father, he dresses with a collar, and denim jacket without a shirt on underneath. Visually he looks a lot more like the other members of the community he has been running with, and that literally only happens so that he can get a rise out of his father.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
gifs by @vintageblr
And that playing at oppression aspect of Scott’s character is marked so clear by the line he says near the end: "I think I need to take a break for awhile" or whatever the exact wording is, when he meets a girl in Italy and sends Mike home. Scott has money, and while a part of me still believes that Scott cares about Mike, he doesn't love Mike. So the second that Scott has something that he loves, something that he wants, he pumps the brakes on the struggle bus and puts an end to his life of sleeping rough and engaging in sex work.
And like I said before, while I felt hurt and betrayed and pissed the fuck off when Scott drove by Mike on the street, looking back at the entire film, the signs have been clear from the beginning. Because Scott is never going to be able to give Mike what he wants, at any level, in any capacity. Scott promises that he will share the wealth with the community when he inherits the money, he has the means, motive, and opportunity to perform such an action. He has the ability by the end to give Mike the support that he needs. To help him get on his feet, but he never does it.
Even just by way of Mike being in love with Scott and Scott being straight and not being able to give Mike what he wants.
Tumblr media
I will be thinking for way too long about the way that Scott stares at the ruckus everyone is making at Bob's funeral. Because, I don't know, I feel like there is almost a part of him that is longing to be there. That is missing it a little bit, or maybe feeling a little guilty. At least, that is how I am reading it as someone that worked with and considered myself friends with unhoused people. When I stopped working that job, I lost all connection with them, and the last time I got to see any of my friends again…was at a funeral.
When discussing my thoughts on this film with @bengiyo and @emotionallychargedtowel I was really cycling back and forth between where I landed in believing that Scott cared at all for the people he lived among for years.
Like there are shitty people who are homeless, sure, but there are also so many really wonderful people who are homeless, and there is no way that Scott, even as a rich bitch that was playing at poverty, did not forge genuine connections with people. At one point, he was sitting in a diner, comforting a woman who was upset. Do you know how many times I've seen that?
And when I started saying that I did believe that Scott cared in part for Mike, I was slammed with a visceral memory of Scott leaving Mike out in the cold, to sleep on some random guy’s lawn while he went back in to town.
Tumblr media
gif by @thejingshi
That said, he gave a reasoning of Mike being safer sleeping in that wealthy neighborhood with no one else around, then he would have been back in town. And similarly too, Scott holds on to Mike's half of the motorbike sales fund until it is time to send him away and also...he doesn’t give Mike all the money cause EVEN THOUGH SCOTT DOESN'T NEED IT!
I don't think he fully could have not cared. If he fully didn't care, I don't think the moments of tenderness would exist.
I don't think Scott would have gone to fucking Idaho
I don't think he would have been staring off the way that he was at the funeral
But you can't even get into the thought of like, Scott has strict rules to follow now that he has the inheritance money. But like…
No he doesn't.
His Dad is dead, and he has the money, what is anyone gonna do if he doesn't act like a refined gentleman? Nothing.
God I want to punch this man.
At the very least Scott and Mike were friends.
Tumblr media

Tumblr media

And so whether or not Scott gave a flying fuck about anyone else in that community, there is someone that he cared about, that he left to rot because it was more convenient for him. And I’d like to think Scott has to face that a bit during the funeral scene. Cause based on the way that it was shot, it looks like Mike is staring straight at Scott, but when we get the shot from Scott's POV, you can only see like the barest tops of heads and chairs flying so I don't even know that Scott and Mike
And the ending of the movie? God, heartbreaking. This whole film just made me see so many echoes of people I care about, having shit luck their entire lives, ending up on the streets, getting in to sex work of some kind, casually referencing their latest rape by a client, maybe having things be good for awhile (getting housing, getting reconnected with someone they care about, getting accepted in to school) and then just having that ripped away from them. Getting their shit stolen.
And on the other side of it too like, being connected, talking with one another, taking care of each other. All the times that someone has been having a particularly bad day, and before I could even go over and talk to them and check in, someone else from the community swoops in comfort them, and make sure they were doing okay.
I loved this movie. I think everyone should watch it.
By/For/About?
Tumblr media
The Gay Trifecta!
We know that this is an About Queers film, because Mike is queer.
By Queers: I'm not 100% certain if the director is gay, it didn't say it explicitly anywhere, but he is behind a number of keystone queer films, and I think I saw an interview about gay activism that involved him.
For Queers: This is a story about the struggles of being a queer man, among other things. But I think the center of, loving a man you know can never love you back, and being fucked over by that in the end reads very much as for a queer audience.
Favorite Moment:
Tumblr media
Everyone going buck fucking wild at Bob's funeral. It was such a moment of unrestrained energy, and I like it all the more for what it did to Scott.

If you know, you know. If you don't, watch the movie so you too can understand how devastating that line is.

Black Sheep*
Tumblr media
Title: Black Sheep
Pairing: Amanda Rollins x Reader
Prompt: "I know that I said to get laid, but I didn't mean them."
Warnings: smut, top Amanda, bottom reader, vaginal fingering, oral (f receiving)
Word Count: 2264
The annual Calhoun Hamptons weekend was finally over, and Ash felt like she could breathe again. It was nice to be around family for a little while, but her parents were terribly overbearing. Ash was both the baby and the black sheep, which was an odd combination. She was the only Calhoun who hadn't gone the route or law, medicine, or politics, instead opting to move to Oregon at the age of 17 to follow in the footsteps of her favorite musicians.
"Have you bought your ticket back to Portland yet?" It was unusual for Rita to stay the entire weekend, much less an extra day. Their brother and his family had already left. William left a day early like he always did, claiming some sort of emergency at the hospital in Albany that required his presence.
Ash knew everybody's excuses for leaving early. Their parents were retired, and yet, there was always something they were needed for. Usually, her father claimed that someone needed his political expertise. William had his medical emergencies, which Ash knew meant that he missed the golf course. Rita rarely gave an excuse without being pressed for one, but when she did, she threw around Rafael's name. That usually stopped any and all quesioning from their parents.
"I'm driving. Do you think I have the money to ship my car across the country?" Ash laughed. Rita knew that Ash had her trust, even if she didn't like using it. Despite what Ash wanted everybody to think, there wasn't anyone in their family that was better with money than Ash was. However, Ash had never even looked in that direction as a career choice because she didn't care about it. Unlike Rita, Ash had never let their family pressure her in any sort of direction.
"I know for a fact that you do, but that's not the point of my question. Would you like to come stay in New York with me? You can park the penis envy machine in my parking garage for the week," Rita offered. Ash wasn't sure what compelled her to agree, but she did without hesitation. There must have been nostalgia in the air, enough to make both women forget that they did not get along for prolonged periods of time.
Truthfully, Rita did miss her little sister. It wasn't enough to see the woman a once a year on their family trip. Either Rita worked through the holidays or Ash simply didn't make the trip out. They may not have gotten along whenever they were growing up, but Rita was genuinely proud of the woman that her bratty little sister had grown into.
Three days into the week, however, Rita needed her to get the hell away for a night. Ash could see the signs from the first night, and yet, she continued to push. She didn't know why she kept bothering Rita on purpose, it was like a little sister reflex. They had come pretty close to a fight, one that Rita knew she wouldn't win if it came to blows. It was after the screaming match that Ash decided she'd go out for the night.
That was how she had ended up at a bar far away from anywhere Rita would be caught dead. It was honestly a little low-brow for Ash's own alcohol taste, but Ash appreciated the change of scenery. There was nobody who reminded Ash of her family in the slightest. If she was lucky, Ash would find someone to take her home for the night, and if Ash had her way, she knew exactly who it would be.
"How's the whiskey?" Ash knew that she needed to be casual. There was a good chance that the attractive blonde woman that she had just seated herself by wasn't the slightest bit interested. Ash didn't want to come off too strong, but she still needed to find a way into conversation.
"Bad, but it'll do the trick if you want to get drunk," the woman said with a thick southern accent. It was the kind that Ash would have absolutely lost her mind for in her younger days. Still, she found it extremely charming. Ash hummed as she waved the bartender over to order her drink. She was careful not to pull out any big bills and brand herself as an outsider. "Have we met before, you seem kind of familiar?"
"I can assure you that I'd remember if we knew each other, but maybe you know my sister…" Ash trailed off as her drink came. "I'm Ash, by the way."
"Amanda." Ash shook Amanda's hand. The grip was firm, much firmer than Ash's was. Amanda gave her a funny look for a moment, but then seemingly dropped it. "Hey Ricky, get me and Ash here another drink on her tab."
"Ordering yourself a drink on my tab, that's pretty bold," Ash said. Amanda just shrugged and pointed at the ring on Ash's middle finger. Ash tried to play it cool as she slipped the ring off of her finger and slid it into her pocket.
"It's not a wedding ring, so don't look so guilty," Amanda said. The bartender brought their drinks over, and Ash slid him a hundred. "If you're who I think you are, you do not look it."
"Let's not think about that. I left New York for a reason, and I'd hate to try driving myself all the way back home," Ash said. Amanda hummed as she leaned towards Ash. In their close proximity, Ash could smell the cheap alcohol and cigarettes on her. Amanda smelled almost exactly like every boyfriend that Ash had ever dated to make her parents mad. If only she had known back then that bringing home a woman would have done the trick, Amanda would have been perfect.
"My place is pretty close by if you don't want to go all the back way to the Upper East Side," Amanda offered. Ash smirked as she took Amanda's hand in hers. Amanda downed her drink before Ash could pull her away from the bar. They stumbled out of the bar in a rush to get to Ash's car.
"For the record, I don't live on the Upper East Side," Ash interjected. Amanda didn't seem to hear a word of it, though, as she was far too busy staring at Ash's car. Ash liked to think of herself as down to earth with the exception of her Aston Martin.
"Yeah, but you drive this," Amanda said as she got into the passenger's seat. Ash closed the door for her and walked around to the driver's side. The engine roared to life, and Ash glanced over at Amanda to see her eyes lit up with excitement. That car was the absolute best wingman in Ash's experience. There was almost nothing that car couldn't get her.
Amanda's apartment was barely six blocks from the bar, but Ash did a few laps around the block at Amanda's request. Amanda practically lunged across the center console to kiss Ash when Ash finally pulled into a parking spot. Ash placed her hands on Amanda's jaw and pulled her into the kiss. Amanda's ferocity was quickly and easily matched by Ash.
They could have stayed out there all night making out, but as Amanda started to move further into Ash's personal space, Ash had to break things up. She knew from experience how difficult it was to fuck in that car. And so, Ash urged Amanda to lead up to the apartment. Amanda happily did so, dragging Ash along up the stairwell with occasional pauses to lean against the wall and kiss each other.
Ash felt so much of the tension that had been building up since the family getaway being ripped away with each second that she spent with Amanda. If things had been going fast before, they did so doubly once Ash and Amanda were inside of the apartment. Most of Amanda's clothes didn't make it out of the living room. Once Amanda was done with her own clothes, she immediately moved to get started on Ash's.
There was no question on whether or not they wanted this as the two of them made their way onto Amanda's bed. Amanda would have pinned Ash to the wall then and there, but she felt the need to impress a little more than she had the desire to just take Ash. As far as Amanda could tell, Ash didn't seem to mind the 30 second wait for them to get down to things.
"Oh wow," Ash moaned as she felt Amanda's hand brush against her. Amanda didn't let herself think too hard about what she was doing. The few times that she had let herself think, she had gotten inside of her own head. Amanda knew that she thought Ash was hot and in her bed, which was all that mattered. Amanda could wait until the morning to tell herself that she wasn't gay.
Until then, Amanda was more than happy to bury her face in between Ash's thighs. The sweetness of Ash's arousal clung to Amanda's tongue, like it was something she would never forget. Ash looked down to see Amanda completely lost in fucking her. The sight in and of itself caused a wave of arousal to roll through Ash's body enough to make her tremble.
"Stay still," Amanda mumbled from Ash's cunt. She had just barely backed away, not quite enough for Ash to be spared from feeling the vibrations of her voice. Ash wouldn't have wanted that even with the option. She wanted to feel everything that Amanda was offering. It had been far too long since Ash had hooked up with someone, and even longer since it had been this good.
"Fuck, I'm gonna cum," Ash warned. Amanda pushed her arm down to keep Ash's hips pinned to the mattress as she doubled down. Amanda could feel the little bits of cum drip down her fingers as she curled them inside of Ash. Ash covered her mouth with her hands, biting down to muffle the noise as much as she could. Amanda slowed her movements until she came to a complete stop and waited for Ash to stop moving before she withdrew her fingers.
"I hope you're still here in the morning," Amanda muttered as she laid her head down on Ash's thigh. Ash watched as Amanda started to doze off. Ash closed her eyes and allowed herself to follow suit. It was a fairly peaceful sleep until she woke up to Amanda scrambling around to get ready. "Morning. Hey, so I gotta leave soon for work. They made an arrest pretty late last night, so this guy's attorney is coming in first thing in the morning. I have interview duty on this case, so I gotta get going."
"I'm up, I'm up," Ash grumbled. She cleaned herself up the best that she could in Amanda's bathroom. Amanda had set out some clothes for her to wear. They weren't exactly the right size, but Ash appreciated the oversized hoodie. Ash offered her car to take Amanda to work, not realizing how bad of an idea that was until she pulled into a parking spot and saw Rita walking across the lot. "Fuck!"
"What?" Amanda asked as she looked around. She realized a second too late what Ash was referring to.
"Detective Rollins, I thought for sure that your day would start before mine," Rita teased. Ash buried her head in her hands, hopeful that Rita hadn't spotted her in the front seat yet. "Nice car, my sister has one just like it."
"That is very interesting," Amanda said with a very awkward and forced smile. Rita leaned down and peeked into the car, unsurprised to find Ash sitting in the driver's seat.
"Ashley Margaret Calhoun, is your phone broken?" Rita asked. Ash peered her head up and shook it. "I didn't think so. Next time I call you 10 times, at least text me back so I know that you aren't dead. Detective Rollins, do you mind giving me a moment with my sister please?"
"Of course," Amanda said. She mouthed an apology towards you as she started to run towards the precinct.
"Rita, before you start, I am a grown woman," Ash started. Rita raised her hand to silence Ash, a trick that unfortunately worked better than when their mother tried it. Rita had always been a bit more of a maternal figure for Ash than their actual in all fairness.
"I know that I said to get laid, but I didn't mean her. I also didn't mean that you had to go out that night. I was going to apologize for our fight, but obviously I seem to have done you a favor," Rita said. She was rambling a little, and Ash felt the guilt bubbling up from her stomach. She had really worried Rita, something that she never intended to do.
"I'm sorry that I didn't call you, I was occupied. If you'd like, I'll stay out here and take you to brunch when you're done?" Ash offered.
"Somewhere nice with good vodka. And Ash?"
"Yes, Rita?" Ash looked up at her older sister.
"I think Amanda would be good for you." Rita hated how sappy saying that felt, but she thought Ash deserved to know. There weren't many cops, if any, Rita would have been okay with dating her sister, but Amanda wasn't a terrible option. Especially if Amanda could convince Ash to visit New York more often.

The full solar eclipse seen across part of the U.S. last August captivated the nation, becoming one of the most photographed events in recent memory.
Now, it may turn out that one of the most jaw-dropping images of the event was taken from a Southwest Airlines flight flying at 39,000 feet.
That will likely be up for debate Tuesday after up-and-coming photographer Jon Carmichael releases his composite image of the eclipse, the first in the continental U.S. since 1979.
And it had been 99 years since such a large swath of nation had seen such an event, with America’s last Pacific-to-Atlantic total solar eclipse occurring in 1919.
As for Carmichael’s image, which is officially being unveiled today at Twitter’s New York offices, it shows a view that’s hard to believe wasn’t taken from space itself.
It’s being released on the one-year anniversary of the 2017 eclipse.
Carmichael – a New York-based photographer whose work has attracted patrons like Elton John – knew the eclipse would present the chance for spectacular images. And what better place to try to capture that than from an airplane.
His first effort fell through; an elaborate video he entered for an Alaska Airlines contest ultimately was not picked.
"All my eggs were in that basket," Carmichael said.
He then scrambled to find another option. He calculated that a Southwest flight from Portland, Oregon, to St. Louis was the next-best option.
Tumblr media
Worried that Southwest’s open-seating policy might thwart his effort, Carmichael planned to arrive at the airport with $600 in cash to try to cajole his fellow passengers into letting him into a prime window seat.
"I was so nervous about not getting a window seat," he said. "When you go this far, you’ve got to be prepared. I was ready to bribe somebody if that’s what it took. Fortunately, I didn’t have to."
Carmichael introduced himself to Southwest employees, and the crew of Southwest Flight 1368 were happy to help.
Carmichael was given seat 1A – a front-row window seat – and one of the flight’s pilots even offered to wipe clean the window so that residue on the outside of the window wouldn’t obscure Carmichael’s shooting.
Tumblr media
That wasn’t all the help that Carmichael would get from the cockpit crew.
As the perfect angle proved elusive, the Southwest pilots helped with a series of unscheduled (but FAA-approved) turns over Idaho’s Snake River to help the photographer get into position for several cracks at the eclipse.
Several turns later, Carmichael got his angle – and the rest of the passengers on Flight 1368 got encore glimpses as the Missouri-bound Boeing 737 remained under the moon’s shadow.
The image isn't from one single shot but rather the culmination of more than 1,000 images that Carmichael stitched together.
Carmichael estimates he took around 1,200 shots during the three minutes of "totality."
"It’s by far the most technologically challenging project I’ve ever taken on," Carmichael said of the image.
"The plane is flying at 500 miles per hour, and I had to stitch it together so it looks like it was taken from one point of view."
Tumblr media
Southwest confirmed its crews helped Carmichael with his efforts.
“The whole story is really amazing. From the pilots literally learning Jon’s story just before boarding, to them going to the lengths of washing his window before flight to help him capture the best possible shot, just really speaks to what our employees will do to make a memorable experience for our customers,” Southwest spokeswoman Michelle Agnew said to USA TODAY’s Today in the Sky blog.
“No one could have anticipated Jon capturing such an amazing photo. We’re excited to have played a small part in bringing his dream to life, all at 39,000 feet.”
The photo also is winning praise from other corners.
“This is by far one of the best eclipse photos I have ever seen. In Jon’s photograph, one gets the linkage to space, with greater landscape detail than we get from Earth’s orbit. His image is a ladder to space,” Carter Emmart, Director of Astrovisualization of the Rose Center for Earth and Space and the American Museum of Natural History, said in a statement after seeing the image.
The roughly 6-foot-by-9-foot image will be on display in Twitter’s New York offices at least through September 9.
Twitter also will share the image via its eponymous platform.
Its permanent fate has not been decided, Carmichael said to Today in the Sky.
For now, Carmichael says he's hoping that sharing the photo via social media will help remind people of the event one year ago, when the red-state, blue-state divisions of the past few years seemed to take a back seat as Americans took in the eclipse.
"My hope is to reignite that," Carmichael said. "Here’s a way to kind of remind people what that did for us."

Here is my contribution for Fowl Fest day 2 (should I make this a full story?)
Diary of André Price, 16 years old, Portland Oregon (aka the Baby from the wrestling match in the Atlantis Complex)
Dear Diary
Okay, brain very loud right now, need to vent.
Kind of a lot happened today. New guy finally arrived, you know the one everyone was convinced must be some juvie reject because he was being transferred in from out of state. Turns out no, his dads in the military, and new guy’s been dealing with long covid. His names Jayden, he’s really cute. I give him an 8, no 9, no… 9.5/10 (still not quite up there with Jacob, but got just a little more rizz than Liam).
Not the point, moving on.
When we were let out to lunch, Em was waiting for me outside class (she never does this, since it’s embarrassing enough to be my sister, let alone people seeing us together, but I digress) said she had to talk to me. Something weird happened this morning when she was getting on the bus (I drove in today, so I missed this). She spotted all these guys in big SUV’s scoping around the woods near the river. They apparently didn’t look like the normal military we get around here, and they had these devices in like a backpack thing and were scanning around the area. She looked really freaked out, because apparently they were scanning the area where I usually go to practice.
Em is the only person who knows about my powers. Thank God it wasn’t Sophie. That 10 year old little weasel would have ratted me out to Mom faster then I could have bribed her. Downside, Em has been treating me like her own personal science experiment ever since (perks of having the local town mathlete/spelling bee/science fair champion around, while you are but a smooth brained gay little lizard) but I guess it’s not all that bad. I know way more about my powers now then I did at the start of the year. I’ve gone from lighting little fires when I look at twigs hard enough to being able to jumpstart my car with electricity.
But maybe that’s not such a good thing.
After school Em and I drove out to investigate. We decided not to get too close, giving ourselves an excuse to be there by picking up Mr Hernández’s dog Chika (still the most adorable Pitbull I’ve ever seen, and a total wimp) and taking her for a walk since he’s still recovering from surgery.
Em was right, a whole swarm of men in black vans with the word A.C.R.O.N.Y.M, stitched onto their uniforms (none of them were even slightly attractive! Total let down). But they were scanning around the old well, exactly where I’ve been practicing for months. That must mean they’re looking for me.
We must have made a noise or something, because one of the men pointed and shouted in our direction. We ran, they ran after us, but they didn’t catch us. I think someone on the team, someone who likes to believe they have sense, must have told them to let us go. After all, we were just kids being curious (shows what they know).
Instead of going home, Em suggested we pick up Dairy Queen and hang out for a few hours. She said it was to throw off suspicion in case these A.C.R.O.N.Y.M guys decided to keep an eye on us. I think she just wanted to get me to pay for Dairy Queen, since I’m not reckless with my money like she is. We got Chika a puppuccino from Starbucks (such a spoiled puppy, but she deserved it after our fright in the woods). While we were there, we saw flyers being put up for a wrestling event that’s coming to town next week. Apparently the Jade princess is gonna be there (you’d think our family’s collective obsession with wrestling would have died down somewhat since that accident when I was a baby. Nope.) so we'll probably all being going.
We were just about to head home when I saw something else weird. Four people parked up outside the general store arguing. There was this tall, bald muscle guy (a 10/10), a tall blonde who looked like tall guys sister (Em informed me she was a 10/10. She was totally having a case of lesbian-itus), this small child in an oversized hoodie (Very loud, could hear them over the entire parking lot), and a dark haired guy in a suit (a 100/10, are you kidding me??? Edward Cullen wishes he looked like this dude!!!). I only took notice of them because I heard the kid in the hoodie shouting something about “magic” and “human babies”. I mean… that’s me! I was a human baby (Shocking I know) and I do have powers (maybe magic???). It felt like too much of a coincidence for both the A.C.R.O.N.Y.M guys, and the hottie bunch (+small child) to all be here on the same day.
All this, and I still have algebra homework to do.
Update.
Hot vampire guy is downstairs with muscle man and blonde lady. They’re asking for me!

I am a brave knight! The bravest male knight the world has ever known!
I serve for the land of Oregon, and for the queen, who is my friend’s extremely attractive mother!
My friend accompanies me as he is the prince of the land (Oregon) alongside his (now our) trusty steed, Fuckboy! He was originally George but we renamed him in honor of my family’s old dog.
I brandish my sword and shield out to this beautiful state as I head off into dark unexplored lands, such as caves filled with beasts, gay bars, the Dark Forest that will consume us if I do not fight, and gentrified coffee shops in Portland!
I will slay the dragon who rules the yard near the market, giving out tough blows of wind-breath, and free the lobsters the market contains! I will become the greatest male hero ever to walk the earth!
(Note: I say strongest/bravest male hero/knight because women and nonbinary people are stronger and braver than me just by existing on a daily basis)

Jake's and Sarina's wedding headcanons meme
Where they get married. Cathedral Park under St. John's Bridge in Portland Oregon.
Tumblr media
When they get married. In autumn (late September) of 2021.
What traditions they include. They have a Christian and Hindu fusion wedding and find ways to blend traditions. Jake and Sarina have a bachelor and bachelorette party respectively. During Sarina's bachelorette party, she has the mehndi ceremony (adorning hands and feet with henna tattoo) with Cassandra, Eve, Nicole, and Estrella. Jai mala (exchanging jasmine flower garlands to wear) and the exchanging of the rings. The jai mala happens when Sarina reaches the end of the aisle. It's followed by the Hindu vows then the Christian vows and the ring exchange. And their friends toss rice at them at the end of the ceremony.
What their wedding cake looks like:
Tumblr media
Who smashes the cake into who's face? Sarina smears a bite of cake on Jake's face. While she's laughing, he silences her with a kiss. Which gets cake on Sarina's face and they laugh.
Who proposed to who? Jake proposed to Sarina in the summer of 2020. It was morning and they were having breakfast. Jake made french press coffee (Sarina's favorite way to have coffee). The coffee was in a new mug that he bought for her just because. (Sarina collects novelty mugs). They do the daily crossword together and when Sarina reaches the bottom of her mug she sees "will you marry me?" written on the bottom. Jake gets down on one knee and with a ring and proposes.
Who walks down the aisle and who waits at the alter? Sarina walks down the aisle while Jake waits at the end of it.
What their wedding dress/suit/other looks like: Sarina wears a red bridal lehenga. The garment blends modern and traditional Indian aesthetics. Jake wears a black three piece with a bolo tie and a black cowboy hat.
Tumblr media
What their color scheme is and what sort of decor they have. The color scheme is jewel toned and includes red, burgundy, orange, yellow, and forest green. They have a mandap set up on the deck for their alter. Lights, flowers, and foliage are strung up across the arches. There fall leaves and flowers on the stairs which serve as the aisle. The staircase is also lined with glass lanterns with candles inside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What flowers are in the bouquet (what do the flowers mean?) The bouquet has red roses, purple waterlily dahlias, orange rank and yellow kalanchoe. Red roses symbolize love and passion. Purple dahlias are a symbol of grace, beauty, dignity, and kindness. Ranunculus flowers mean charm and attractiveness and kalanchoes mean persistence and eternal love. For added greenery, the bouquet has seeded eucalyptus, gumdrop eucalyptus, maidenhair fern (in orange), and leatherleaf fern. Eucalyptus is a symbol of strength, protection and abundance. And the fern is a symbol of sincerity, magic, fascination, confidence, shelter, discretion, reverie and a secret bond of love. Silk flowers are used and after the wedding, the bouquet becomes the center piece for the Stones' dining room table.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What their vows are. Saptapadi, the seven vows of Hindu marriage. Jake an Sarina walk seven circles around the fire in the mandap. While walking, they say the vows. 1) To nourish each other. 2) To remain lifelong friends. 3) To be together forever. 4) To take of family. 5) To share joys and sorrows. 6) To preserve wealth. 7) To grow together in strength. After the saptapadi, Jake and Sarina say the classic Christian wedding vows. "I, Jacob Stone, take you, Sarina Bhonsle, to be my wedded wife. . .till death do us part." "I, Sarina Bhonsle, take you, Jacob Stone, to be my wedded husband. . .till death do us part."
If anyone's late to the wedding. Flynn. Naturally.
Who's in the bridal party/groomsmen? It's a small ceremony. Most of the guests are the Library people. And the rest are a few family and friends Jacob and Sarina have outside of the Library. Because of this, they decide to not have a bridal party and groomsmen. Instead they just have a Best Person and a Person of Honor. Jacob asked Cassandra to be his Best Woman. Sarina asks Ezekiel to be her Man of Honor.
What their bridal party/groomsmen are wearing. Ezekiel wears a burgundy suit with a kurta shirt. Cassie wears an orange cowl neck gown. The color coordinates with Jake's orange ranunculus boutonniere.
Tumblr media
Who gives speeches at the reception (bonus: what do they say?) Cassie and Ezekiel give speeches. As does Eve and Jenkins. Cass's speech is mostly about the good change she's seen in Jake since Sarina came into his life. Ezekiel ribs Jacob, basically saying that Sarina is too cool for Jake but wishes them a happy life together. Eve's speech is about officially welcoming Sarina into their weird found little family. Eve and Sarina later develop an inside joke that Eve is Sarina's Guardian-in-law. Jenkins congratulations the happy couple and makes a point to tell Jacob how proud he is of him.
Who catches the bouquet? Cassandra catches the bouquet. She then shares a knowing look with Estrella.
What their wedding photos look like. Photos of the newly weds were taken on the Cathedral Park staircase. As well as group photos with Ezekiel and Cassandra and photos with Flynn, Eve, Jenkins, and Nicole. There are also candid photos of the ceremony and the reception. Such as photos of the rice tossing and the cake smashing. Jacob and Sarina have a tri-fold frame of the cake smashing. First photo is of Sarina smashing cake into Jake's face. Second is of Jake kissing Sarina, getting cake on her face, and the third is of them laughing together.
What sort of food they have at the reception. Entrées: Mutton biryani and pork chops w/ fig & grape agrodolce. Appetizers: Bacon wrapped dates w/ goat cheese, potato skins, and amritsari paneer tikka. Side dishes: Masala mac & cheese, quinoa bhel salad, and tamale pie. Desserts: Cherry and apple fried pies, ras malai mousse and thandai truffles.
Tumblr media
How wild their reception gets (who dances the best, who gets drunk first, etc.) Ezekiel is the best dancer. Some guests start a limbo contest which Jenkins wins and Flynn was a close second. Cassie gets drunk on champagne.
What their rings look like. Sarina's engagement ring & wedding band and Jake's wedding band.
Tumblr media
What sort of favors they have. Wooden engraved bookmarks.
Where they go on their honeymoon. Château de Fère in France.
Something memorable that happens during the party/ceremony. A couple of Jake's cousins get too drunk and start a brawl.
Who officiates the ceremony. They hire a pandit to perform the Hindu parts of the ceremony and a priest to perform the Christian parts.
What song their first dance is to. "Here, There and Everywhere" by The Beatles.
Who gives who away as they walk down the aisle. Jenkins walks Sarina down the aisle.

Hi, I live in Oregon and would love to help! Is there anything in particular you would like to know?
Omg nice hi! I have sooo many questions im so sorry 😭😭😭
I’m not sure what field of work you’re in, but I work with art/animation/film (and writing), the former all having hubs in LA and Atlanta, Georgia—are there jobs in those fields over there, or is that much less common? The older I get the more I want a relatively normal 9-5 (or less lol) and the chance to Live a Little, and with all the nature in Oregon that makes the state super attractive to me. Do you know if there are any fields that need people over there? Average min. wage I know is $14.20 which is better than most places in the south but not by a lot, do jobs tend to pay more or less?
How’s the traffic and driving like? How’s the public transport?
I know a bit about Portland but what are the smaller cities that you’re familiar with that you’d recommend? What’s it like to rent there? Is Portland a good city to live in or would you not recommend it? How’s the actual diversity too, bc I’ve heard it’s very white. I’m in the south but I do love being surrounded by an extremely cool variety in cultures and restaurants. I was raised really close to hispanic immigrant populations too (I am hispanic) and I’d miss it if we’re scarce :(
How’s the food and grocery shopping? The two things that depress me the most living where I’m at is the traffic (ABSOLUTE MURDER) and the expensive groceries/extremely gentrified and expensive restaurants. Ideally I’d enjoy somewhere where buying a week’s worth of groceries won’t deplete my wallet. Portland I feel is not that place lol, but I’m hoping maybe the driving is better
How are the winters? Again, southern boy over here, I’ve never driven in snow and it would scare the shit out of me to do so 😖
And is there anything you’d tell people to do or research before moving? What type of person wouldn’t fit in, be it bc of career or preferences?
That’s all, publishing in case anybody else has something they wanna contribute!! Thank you so much for offering advice and feel free to not answer everything lol

Red Japanese bridges, also known as "Taiko-bashi" are iconic architectural structures that symbolize the beauty and elegance of Japanese culture. These bridges are not only beautiful but also have a rich history and significance in Japanese tradition.
Red Japanese bridges were first built in the 17th century during the Edo period. The most famous of these bridges is the vermilion-colored wooden arch bridge located in the gardens of Koto-in Temple in Kyoto, Japan. This bridge is known as the "Taiko Bridge" because it was built by Taiko Hideyoshi, a famous Japanese warlord.
The color red has significant cultural and spiritual significance in Japanese culture. In Japan, red is considered a symbol of happiness, good luck, and protection against evil spirits. Therefore, it is no surprise that red was chosen as the primary color for these beautiful bridges.
Red Japanese bridges are also significant in Japanese gardens and landscaping. They are used to connect different parts of a garden, creating a sense of harmony and balance. The bridges are usually built over small streams or ponds, adding an element of tranquility to the surroundings.
One of the most famous examples of this is the red bridge at the Japanese garden in Portland, Oregon. The bridge, known as the "Japanese Tea Garden Bridge," was built in the early 20th century and is one of the most visited attractions in the city. The bridge connects two sides of a serene pond and provides a stunning view of the surrounding landscape.
The design of red Japanese bridges is also noteworthy. The bridges are usually made of wood and have a gentle arch shape. The arch shape is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional. The arch allows the bridge to distribute the weight of people walking on it more evenly, making it stronger and more durable.
Another distinctive feature of red Japanese bridges is their railings. The railings are usually made of a decorative lattice pattern that adds a touch of elegance to the bridge. The railings also serve a practical purpose by providing support for those walking on the bridge.
In conclusion, red Japanese bridges are more than just beautiful architectural structures. They represent the history, culture, and traditions of Japan and provide a sense of harmony and balance to the landscapes in which they are built. Whether you are visiting Japan or a Japanese garden elsewhere in the world, a red Japanese bridge is an essential element that you should not miss.
