xie lian headcanon

Post-novel, Xie Lian becomes a god of death (more specifically, the mercy of the peace brought by death).

Narrative-wise, he has strong ties with death via the fall of Xianle, the hundred swords in book 4, the suicide of his parents, the century spent in a literal coffin… the list goes on. He’s the strongest of martial gods, but spent the longest time as a mortal, and as thus would probably comprehend the mortal understanding of death the most out of many major gods.

After the novel, Xie Lian would probably travel between the three realms (Heaven, Puqi City, the ghost city), so stories that make it to the mortal realm could transform the travels to the ghost city as traveling to the underworld (to throw in Western mythology, a sort of a Persephone figure). So wouldn’t some start worshiping Xie Lian along this idea? If enough followers follow this idea, and if their belief in it strong enough, I could easily picture Xie Lian dedicating his time to helping with mortals’ transition between life and death.

I've tried to post this like three times but Tumblr mobile app didn't like me and just threw away all my witty commentary the moment I hit "Post", so I juggled my video and photos to my computer just for that sweet desktop experience!

But like can we all acknowledge that Xie Lian ascended into a god the third time through junk collecting? He just collected scraps SO HARD that he ascended. Like did he plan that? Or was he just minding his own business one day and then a Heavenly Tribulation rained down on him and he was like "Whoops, guess this is what I'll be known for forever let's gooooo!" It sounds like him, honestly.

Everyone knows Xie Lian as that one god involved with a plague and whose martial skills are second to none - to the point that he's stronger than Hua Cheng by the time his curse shackles are removed. But let's all remember the REAL reason he's a god at the start of TGCF. Our boy is just that good that he junk-collected his way into heaven, and I think we should be praying to our scrap immortals more often.

He's a very contradictory god, not only in PJO (I made a post about about how much he contradicts himself), but also in mythology in general. He's the god of medicine but also the god of plagues, for example

In PJO, what I want him to be like is a better person. Not good, bc he's still a god and he's still quite literally made out of human minds and human minds are not completely good, but still better

I want him to visit his children, to acknowledge that some of the stuff he did was fucked up, etc etc etc. But I want him to be all that while still, idk, killing entire cities with plagues. Because he's the god of plagues. Come on

Like— he's the plague that killed your family but he is also the doctor that saved your dog. You get what I'm trying to say?? Gods are essentially what they're the gods of (Ares is war, Dionysus is insanity, for example) and that means that they are not fully good, but still sometimes necessary

Here's the thing about sickness: it's unfair, and it takes people away from you, not caring if they deserve it or not. And here's the thing about healing: it's needed, and there are so many versions of it it's almost impossible to know the exact number. Healing is something good. But you need something bad for it to work. You can't be healed from sickness if the sickness doesn't exist

And there are so many contradictions that come only w bring the god of the sun

The sun burns. It's deadly. Nothing can get close to it without burning to the ground, and being under its light for too long can literally give you cancer. But the sun is also warm. We need it to survive; we use its light to see, it inspires us to make art, its heat is the only reason we're still alive
