I think one of the wildest and most frustrating things I kept getting told about Drizzt is that he's god's special boy and an amazing mary sue and then I read the crystal shard and he almost gets bodied by trolls, gets kicked around in the aftermath of a battlefield, and almost gets buried in an avalanche in the first book. he's poked and prodded like a freak of nature, people are hostile to him for existing and he tries to be extremely polite about it and stay out of everyone's way

in his prequels he is the most powerless person in his own narrative. the most courageous thing he can do and often does is run the fuck away and/or question something even when people tell him to shut the fuck up and stop doing it. he's not exceptional in how he was abused, because the abuse is explicitly institutional and happens to everyone in his age bracket. he's good at swords and it doesn't help him resolve any of his conflicts except the ones that are him literally fighting for his life. the few boons of grace he is given come from the decisions of other people who cared enough not to beat all his hopes and dreams and curiosity out of him before he went to indoctrination murder school

people keep insisting he's a mary sue and he can do no wrong and he's made no errors and i'm just looking at the actual text going "i don't know how this is some kind of mary sue special boy pastiche unless i'm missing some key thing that everyone else has brought with them to this reading"

For many years, the Wolves of the North were a small pack, but Cregan was just as dedicated to his sister as Sara was to him. After the war, when Cregan remarried to Alysanne Blackwood, they had a daughter named Sarra, likely named after his dear sister.

i think before joining or making a minecraft roleplay server every creator needs to either have played at least ONE campagin of a ttrpg of their choice (doesnt have to be dnd) or they must have spent their entire childhood roleplaying with people on any social media/forum/chat app their tiny hands could get a hold on. i want these minecraft roleplayers to have backgrounds in doing roleplay with actions written out *like this* in their friends text messages and getting into insane drama as teenagers in discord roleplay servers

He’s ruining all established canon in real time. Speed running the absolute destruction of continuity of the SW universe and people are still rooting for him and his blorbo self inserts like there’s no tomorrow. Literally the whole reason I no longer engage in Ashoka content is because he massacred my girl and made her so one dimensional that my Mary Sue self insert fanfics OCs I wrote when I was 14 looks well developed compared to the absolute bland “girlboss kick ass take names” personality Ashoka has right now.

There were so many opportunities for him to explore the absolute potential of angst and conflict within Ashoka in this new series, to give her character a believable story of grief loss and growth yet he threw it all away because he wanted his OC to be the specialist girl that ever lived. This series could’ve been used to explore Ashokas conflicting feelings regarding the Anakin that taught her and was a mentor to her whilst trying to connect it to the monster that killed her family and hunted her culture into almost extinction and tried to kill her, a person he confessed to love as a sister, on Malachor. It could’ve been a good send off to a great character, to have her face that the Skyguy she put on a pedestal in her mind was in actuality the worst sort of scum and have her try to come to terms that just because she can forgive him for being the genocidal maniac he was and still hold love in her heart for who he used to be and also understand why the Jedi, her family, wasn’t the reason for their own downfall.

But alas. We got another series of “the Jedi caused their own downfall!!! Anakin did nothing wrong ever and him killing all my family and everyone I’ve ever known is so not his fault!!! It’s definitely the fault of the unbending stuck in the past council!!!”. Instead of a series that could’ve made Ashoka’s “departure” (literally never going to happen with felony at the helm, he’s going to find a way to make her immortal and then show up 200 years in the future to be the protagonist of another light v dark fight since she’s his special SI) from the series tie in nicely thematically and canonically with every other Star Wars media we have, he decided that the best way to have this series go down is 1) everyone is force sensitive if they tried hard enough ig and 2) the Jedi were bad!!! Their protocols don’t work! They were mean to my little meow meow Anakin Skywalker the greatest Jedi of all times™️ therefore he got to kill them all!!!!

Got a bit off topic but I’m still so mad that he had this chance to make Ashoka truly experience growth like the first 5 seasons of TCW yet he decided maintaining the badass rebel without a cause aesthetics for her was more important then good story telling.

Honestly though, my main problem with this series is that he decided that apparently everyone in the universe can be force sensitive if they “just tried hard enough”. Like your Midichlorian Count no longer matters since even if you were Force-Null you can still be special!!!!

This takes away any and all urgency in the Jedi Fallen Order games. It makes Cals journey absolutely redundant. It throws away all the tragedy contained in having inquisitors being force sensitive kids kidnapped from their parents and tortured till they give into the dark side. If all beings are able to use the force in his universe then there are no consequences to the inquisitors not finding the Holocron that holds the names to all force sensitive children in the universe. There would be no need to them to chase Cal and the Mantis Crew throughout the universe to obtain what they have. They could’ve just went down to any random level in Coruscant and take homeless Force-Null kids and train them.

Even better! It makes the entirety of the KOTOR games redundant!!!! Oh and I guess the hidden path is also redundant since everyone can be force sensitive and no one truly needs more saving from the empire over others :/ totally not like these kids that were saved by the path would’ve been taken and tortured into inquisitors, definitely not since EVERYONE is force sensitive nowadays or is it just the ones Ashoka trains herself because she’s the “living embodiment of the daughter uwu she’s so special and unique look how well she can train a non force sensitive to be force sensitive!!!”

Everyone in the Star Wars universe has Midichlorian’s in their blood. That is a fact. It is also an established fact that the amount each person has is different and is not determined nor dependent on lineage. Force-Nulls typically range in the 1000-3000 count and you need 7000 to be force sensitive and higher to be accepted into the order. (The order isn’t the end all be all of force cultures, Rouge One shows that Jedha’s force culture isn’t restricted to only force sensitives as the Guardian’s were never specified to be only a religious order of force sensitives. And high canon doesn’t depict many other force cultures but we know that there are many force cultures in the universe that co-exist with the Jedi with which the Jedi weren’t in opposition towards; literally not even the witches of Dathomir were oppositions anywhere outside of the battle fields.) You don’t need to be force sensitive to be part of a force culture (Jedha literally has pilgrims who come far and wide to make a pilgrimage to the holy site and not all of them were force sensitive), Sabine could’ve very easily been taught the tenets of the Jedi without retconning her to be force sensitive or making everyone in the universe force sensitive.

No where in either the EU or High Canon did anyone ever say that you have to be force sensitive to be a badass or to make a difference. Hera did not hold the title of the best pilot in the universe just for some rat of a man to come and say that Anakin was the best because *muh force sensitivity!!!!* Some of the most heroic and most influential (good or bad) people in the franchise are Force-Null! And that’s great! It means that the force doesn’t make anyone better than anyone else! It’s a quirk of the universe! To retcon that everyone can and is force sensitive if they tried hard enough is literally cheapening everything the franchise stands for. Andor did not literally give us an entire story about how Force-Nulls in the Galaxy makes just as much of a difference as force sensitives for felony to come out and say that “you know what??? Midichlorian’s are a scam! You get a force sensitivity! You get a force sensitivity! Everyone gets a force sensitivity!!!!”

Sabine was great as she was in rebels, why cheapen it with “oh she’s actually force sensitive all this time!!!” When we could’ve stuck with badass Force-Null Mandalorian can kick your ass five ways to Sunday with her paint bombs and blasters you force wielding asshole!!! I know exactly what you're getting at. I had a conversation with a friend recently, where I was talking about how my DnD character would be seen as a mary-sue since she's the daughter of some powerful archfey and has multiple love interests, and he said 'Oh my dude's a tumblr sexyman for sure' because he's a tall white guy with a tragic backstory who loves blood and knives.' Both terms would really reduce our characters down to just bare minimums.

If your character is called a tumblr sexyman, you presume he's (usually) a tall, white, skinny, conventionally attractive man in a suit, sometimes of a character who isn't human-like. Ala: Onceler, Sherlock, Loki; Wheatley, Bill Cypher. It's largely seen as an archetype and a meme. And that's gotta suck, to make a guy who fits a certain image and then have him be treated like a joke.

Speaking from experience, it's hard out here for a Mary-Sue lover. You don't see a Mary Sue poll, or Mary Sue being used as a meme. Mary-Sue used to just mean a woman character who steals the spotlight in bad fanfiction (which I disagree ever needed mocking in the first place. Fuck the haters, how else can writers learn?) But now people use it to refer to any competent, smart, beautiful, or just annoying female character.

It's really unfair to people just having fun.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of shows that have girlfriend's be nothing other than girlfriends and that is definitely bad writing.

But I also feel like people are quick to claim this in cases that don't match. For example, Vaggie. People are so quick to say she's just Charlie's girlfriend, she has no role outside of being there for Charlie, all she does is support Charlie and so on and so on...

But like... The main plot of the show is Charlie's dream. So yes. There is going to be a lot of focus on Vaggie supporting that and helping her. This isn't a writing flaw. In fact, it would be worse if this series (which let's remember only was given 8 short episodes to work with) completely diverted from the plot in order to give an entirely random episode to Vaggie doing something utterly out there for the sake of "proving" she's more than Charlie's girlfriend.

And let's also remember that Charlie's dream is something Vaggie wants for her own reasons as well. She's trying to redeem herself and she wants to prove it possible for her own guilt, not just because her girlfriend wants it.

Look, I was an early critique of Vaggie in the first few episodes but I also knew I couldn't make a set opinion on her until we had a chance to get to know her. Now, after what we've seen, I think it's very short sighted to keep reducing her to so little when she's more than proved herself. Not to mention that we've still got more to come as well.

FE16 wise, characters (bar a few ones who are generally loved !) can piss on their background/convictions/ties/preexisting character to join Billy's side because Billy is awesome. No matter how hard people try to headcanon about it, Felix will join the GD and later Claude's army in VW because Billy had a kickass rank in swordfighting : Felix will ditch his childhood friends and leave his people to fend for themselves because Billy knows how to swordfight.

Remove Billy's player avatar powers, and suddenly, some characters cannot switch sides - in return they gain a much stronger characterisation and development (the BL peeps in Nopes!).

What makes the Fodlan verse so unique isn't Billy being at the forefront of player pandering, no, Fodlan verse will hammer instead the "waifu pandering". Sure, waifu is supposed to be your avatar's luf interest and the character you will spend thousands of dollars/euros/pick your currency for - but instead of pushing player pandering to 11, Fodlan verse instead pushes waifu pandering.

Supreme Leader cannot ever be challenged, whatever she does, people will praise her later on - or if we really have to fight her, it will not be willingly but the cast will be forced by circumstances (don't ask who created them!) and lament how they couldn't "walk with her uwu".

It culminates, imo, with SS S Support Rhea wondering if the War was her fault, and no one putting the blame on the character who declared said war on premises we learn, through the game, to be wrong. It's as if Rhea wonders if being tortured for 5 years I mean, having to dance Zumba for 5 years in Enbarr's dungeons, thousands of dead people, the monastery and its people being destroyed, Faerghus falling to anarchy, Adrestian made Demonic Beasts and Supreme Leader's beliefs that nonhumans should never have powers over humans because their ears aren't round is, well, her fault.

To preserve Supreme Leader's selling points, those games amp up to unseen before in this franchise levels of victim blaming that seriously - regardless of real life world events - made a lot of people, myself included, uncomfortable.

So while I wouldn't say Supreme Leader is a 2000s Mary Sue, the writing around her feels somehow more gratting than what a fanfiction writer could have wrote in the 2000s for fun.
