Murders at Karlov Manor Booster Challenge
With every* set since zendikar rising, I've done a booster of custom cards meant to be a part of the set. This is based on a challenge from GDS3, so my goals are to not just to make cards that feel like a part of the set but also ones that Innovate which is a rather difficult balance to strike. I try to cover a wide variety of themes, colors, and mechanics. This is the first set using the new play boosters which I thought would make things more different than it did; it's basically just one fewer card and one slot that's flexible in rarity- I decided to make it uncommon, and I grouped it in with the other uncommons because it really doesn't matter which takes the flex slot.
Rare
Tumblr media
Worldsoul's Justice 3WW Sorcery Choose one or more- * Destroy all colorless creatures. * Destroy all monocolored creatures. * Destroy all multicolored creatures. “You all profited while Ravnica screamed! You are all guilty!” -Oba
Art link
This is a flexible board wipe that takes advantage of the variety of colors you might have on board in this set between the light multicolor theme and the disguise mechanic to let you sculpt it to your needs.
Uncommons
Tumblr media
Increased Surveillance 1U Instant Surveil 1, then surveil 2, then surveil 3. (To surveil, look at that many cards from the top of your library. Put any number into your graveyard and the rest back on top in any order.) Rumors of the Dimirs’ fall only aid their all-seeing eyes.
Art link
We've seen something kinda like this before in Cryptic Annelid, but i think scry vs surveil makes a big difference here. This is a great card for filling up your yard to collect evidence, while sculpting your future draws.
Tumblr media
Midnight Investigator 1BB Creature- Vampire Detective When Midnight Investigator enters the battlefield, each player may collect evidence 5. If a player doesn’t, they lose life equal to the total mana value of cards in their graveyard. (To collect evidence 5, exile cards with total mana value 5 or greater from your graveyard.) 3/2
Art link
One thing that's cool about collect evidence that only one card played with is that it's something anyone *can* do. I made this symmetrical rather than just opponents to reward building around the mechanic, but i like the way that the life loss effect essentially has a cap.
Tumblr media
Chaos Seal 3B Enchantment Sacrifice Chaos Seal: Exile the top three cards of your library. You may play those cards this turn. Disguise 1R (You may cast this card face down for 3 as a 2/2 creature with ward 2. Turn it face up any time for its disguise cost.) The Rakdos excel at finding novel uses for Azorius containment spells.
Art link
In theory this card could be part of a cycle but I wasn't finding a lot of other effects that fit the bill. I needed something that wasn't problematic as an on board trick but also that you don't always want to use immediately after playing, and that benefited from being able to come out "cheaply" with a disguise cost. Impulse draw was a good fit because the amount of mana you have available really matters.
Tumblr media
In Hiding G Enchantment Ward costs of permanents you control cost an additional 1 to pay. When In Hiding enters the battlefield, you may cloak a card from your hand. (To cloak a card, put it onto the battlefield face down as a 2/2 creature with ward 2. Turn it face up any time for its mana cost if it’s a creature card.)
Art link
I went back and forth between white and green for this card. White is a little better at this kind of weenie and I feel like the re-ward fits it a little more, but neither is a bad fit for green and green is more of the disguise color so in this particular set it might make sense there. In the end I went green to differentiate this card a little more from the white common that is a noncreature permanent that has a minor effect and makes a 2/2 on ETB.
Commons
Tumblr media
Compiled Case Notes 1W Artifact When Compiled Case Notes enters the battlefield, create a 2/2 white and blue Detective creature token. 1, T: Surveil 1. Activate only if a Detective entered the battlefield under your control this turn or was turned face up under your control this turn.
Art link
I like the detective typal stuff and wanted to make a card for it; here's one that works fine in a vacuum as essentially a bear with kicker 1: Surveil 1, but gets a lot more interesting if you have other detectives which is a place I like my common typal rewards.
Tumblr media
Detain the Suspect 1U Sorcery Tap target creature then choose two. You may choose the same mode more than once. * Put a stun counter on that creature. (If a creature with a stun counter on it would become untapped, instead remove a stun counter from it.) * Investigate.
Art link
One cool thing you can do with stun counters that you couldn't with old "doesn't untap" effects is make a variable amount of turns. Investigate is clearly the better option synergy wise in this set, but being sorcery means tapping doesn't stop an attacker, and stopping an attacker for a turn or two can be *very* valuable. I think this card's in a good spot of how often you choose each of the three modes (two stun counters, two clues, counter and clue)
Tumblr media
Kidnap 4U Instant This spell costs 1 less to cast for each card you drew this turn. Target creature’s owner puts it on top or bottom of their library. In a city as big as Ravnica, it’s all to easy to fall through thr cracks.
Art link
The set already has some of this with the split cards and morphs, but I just wanted to add another spell that's expensive but can be cast cheaply to fill up your yard with expensive stuff for the sake of evidence collection. This was the cost reduction effect I found I liked best for this set.
Tumblr media
Golgari Scapegoat 3B Creature- Elf Assassin 3B: Suspect Golgari Scapegoat. (A suspected creature has menace and can’t block.) Whenever Golgari Scapegoat deals combat damage to a player, if it’s suspected, surveil 2. 3/4 After the Invasion, the other Guilds are quick to blame the Swarm.
Art link
This is a kind of design I always love doing with a set mechanic- give it a way to turn itself on so it works fine on its own, but cost it such that you'd much rather find another way to turn that effect on if you can.
Tumblr media
Mysterious Bloodstain B Artifact- Clue When Mysterious Bloodstain enters or leaves the battlefield, suspect up to one target creature. (It has menace and can’t block.) 2, Sacrifice Mysterious Bloodstain: Draw a card.
Art link
This is a cycle of clues that all do an effect when they enter or leave the battlefield. This is the one I like best because I think a card like this would do a lot of work in getting the BR suspect deck online; more than any of the others this one feels the most like a card you can only make here.
Tumblr media
Covert Operations Head 1R Creature- Goblin Soldier Face-down creatures you control have haste. 2/1 Though once goblins filled only the lowest Boros ranks, after the Invasion devastated Boros numbers those who survived quickly rose.
Art link
Fairly straightforward disguise reward here. I wanted to cost it to be 2 mana, since coming down before turn 3 is hugely important for this particular card, so it basically built itself from the initial idea.
Tumblr media
Anzrag's Escape 2G Sorcery Choose one- * Return target card in your graveyard to your hand * Return target card you own in exile that you collected as evidence this turn to your hand.
Art link
Simple enough idea here, it's a regrowth that doesn't compete with the set's graveyard mechanic. I don't think this breaks the spirit of the rule that cards shouldn't be able to get cards back from exile because of how specific it is; it doesn't at all prevent using exile as a safety.
Tumblr media
Elephant in the Room 4G Creature- Elephant Detective Disguise 4G. This cost is reduced by 2 if Elephant in the Room is attacking and isn’t blocked. (You may cast this card face down for 3 as a 2/2 creature with ward 2. Turn it face up any time for its disguise cost.) 5/5
Art link
I wanted a card that lets you use disguise to sneak a big creature out early without breaking the rule of five, and I came up with a design I quite like to get around it.

I Really Could Stay Chapter 4
I Really Could Stay: ~1313 words. Kairi celebrates Christmas Eve with her parents and wishes Sora were with them.
Story Info: Sora/Kairi. Set Post-Canon. Alternating POVs. Established Relationship. Light Angst, Romance, Fluff, Mutual Pining, Hurt/Comfort, Healing, Christmas.
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5
Tumblr media
Kairi added another ornament to the Christmas tree in her parents’ living room. Destiny Islands never got so much as a flake of snow, but Christmas customs from when the many worlds were one World had made it to the present day, and decorating Christmas trees was one of them.
Of course, Destiny Islands did not have the types of conifers that a world like Arendelle or even Radiant Garden did. But there was a tree the locals called a star pine or triangle tree that worked quite nicely as a Christmas tree. It had a lovely symmetrical shape with wide spaces between the branches, perfect for hanging ornaments as she was doing now.
The final ornament was a little framed picture of her and Sora from last year. It was star-shaped, and Sora was kissing her cheek. She had a big smile on her face, and another pang went through her as she thought about how much she missed him. Last year he’d come over to help decorate the tree. This year, his absence was painfully obvious.
“That’s all of them, right?” her mother asked, and she nodded. They added paopu fruit candies as was tradition, and then her father plugged in the tree to turn on the lights. Together they added the wrapped presents under the tree till its base was brimming with gifts.
The tree looked beautiful with the main light off. Ornaments from over the years along with family heirlooms adorned its branches, and the paopu candies and strings of multicolored lights were the perfect touch.
They took a few moments to admire the tree together, then made their evening tea. Her parents said goodnight afterwards and went to bed, and she was left with her half-empty mug, staring at the tree alone.
Sora hadn’t texted her in hours. It was probably because he was fighting, but still. She couldn’t help but worry. Gnawing on her lip, she pulled her phone out of her bathrobe pocket and checked it out of habit. Still nothing.
Sighing, she climbed the stairs to her room. She was clad in her Christmas pajamas with cats wearing Santa hats on them along with matching cat slippers, but she didn’t feel like sleeping anytime soon. It was 9:00 pm, and she wanted to stay awake until midnight. Just in case Sora found a few spare moments to text her or even call her if she was lucky.
Her room had a balcony with a beautiful view of the Main Island’s beach, and on nights when the weather was nice, she liked to keep the doors open. That let in a cool breeze and gave her the perfect view of the starry sky.
She opened the doors now, and the curtains fluttered. Everyone’s homes were decorated for Christmas, and she loved seeing the lights twinkling on each of the different houses in the town below. Out of habit she searched for Riku’s house, then Sora’s. Their homes were brightly lit, like beacons silently pleading for their sons to come home, and Kairi wished they’d be back soon too.
She made herself cozy under the covers of her bed and grabbed a book off of the bedside table. It was one of her old favorites and perfect reading for a night like this. Her eyelids drooped lower and lower until she felt the book slip out of her grasp.
When she awoke, it was because something was rustling outside. Rubbing her eyes, she sat up and glanced at her alarm clock. 12:00 am. Sometimes a stray animal wound up on her balcony, and it was probably—
“Merry Christmas, Kairi.”
Sora was standing in the doorway of her balcony. His clothing was dirty, dust was in his sweaty, matted hair, and he looked like he was going to collapse at any moment. And yet the smile on his face was so big that it was like he’d forgotten all about those things.
“Sora!” she cried, jumping out of bed and racing over to him. He cupped her face and kissed her deeply, all the stress and anxiety of this latest separation melting away like a bad dream. He was here and that was all that mattered. The best Christmas present she could possibly ask for.
She wrapped her arms around his shoulders as the kiss continued. It had only been nine days since she’d last seen him this time, and yet it felt much longer than that. All her previous sleepiness fled her as the kiss grew more heated and passionate. Clearly he had missed her as much as she had missed him. Her hands wandered lower out of habit, and a pained yelp sounded out of him when she touched his back.
She frowned and pulled away. “Sora, what’s wrong?”
“Sorry, should’ve warned you. A Heartless clawed me in the back. Aerith was busy, so Riku did his best.” He sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. “But the gashes might need a little more healing before we continue.”
“Why didn’t you say something sooner?” Tears threatened to spill out of her eyes at the thought of him getting hurt like this and enduring however much pain to return to her side in time for Christmas. Clearly, this was not just some minor injury.
He simply shrugged and smiled in that earnest, heartfelt Sora way of his. “I wanted my welcome home Kairi Christmas kiss.”
“Well, you’ve gotten it, so now it’s time for some welcome home Kairi healing.”
She led him to the bed and helped him get his shirt off. Sure enough, there were rips in the fabric from the Heartless’s claws. His wounds had been hastily bandaged, and she told him to lie down.
“This is gonna hurt,” she warned him, “but hopefully not for long.”
She removed the bandages as carefully as she could, but he still flinched. She apologized and set them to the side, the sight of his deep red blood on the stark white bandages making her feel faint. Not because she was particularly squeamish. It was just something about seeing his blood that threatened to tear something open inside her, even though the wounds weren’t currently bleeding.
“It’s okay,” he said, twisting his head back to look at her. “You’re just trying to help, and it’s my fault for not paying better attention to what was happening around me.”
“No, you’re burnt out and exhausted because Master Yen Sid has been working you too hard. This kind of thing was bound to happen.”
“Yeah, I think I need more of a break this time,” he admitted.
She drew on the light in her heart and imagined it moving to her palms. Once her light emanated from them, she gingerly touched his back, and a soft moan escaped from him. He tensed but didn’t say anything as she gently moved her hands up and down the wounds. They closed and healed and faded under her skilled touch. But it wasn’t just that. Her healing powers were even stronger than normal when she was healing him, probably because of the bond they shared. Before long, his back was as good as new.
Satisfied with her handiwork, she bent her head and tenderly kissed the spot where the deepest gash had been. “There, how’s that feel?” she murmured, gently rubbing circles into his skin.
He sighed deeply. “Much better. Thank you, Kairi.”
She smiled and continued stroking his healed back. Nothing calmed him and soothed him more than being with her and feeling her touch.
Sure enough, a few moments later, his breathing evened out in the rhythm of sleep. She found a spare blanket in her closet and draped it over him, then got under the covers and cuddled up next to him.
“Sweet dreams, Sora,” she murmured, then planted a soft kiss on his lips before falling asleep.

A/N: The Christmas trees on Destiny Islands are inspired by Norfolk Pines. I wanted a conifer that could survive in a tropical environment, and so down a research rabbit hole I went. They're from Norfolk Island originally but are apparently cultivated in Hawaii to be used as Christmas trees.

Merry and Bright

An Eddie Munson one shot
Just a bunch of Christmas fluff!
Reader-
" Baby? What's your favorite Christmas song of all time?" You ask your boyfriend Eddie, as you place a shiny red ball on your cute, full tree. It was your first Christmas together and you had both decided that to celebrate you would go and get a real Christmas tree. You tromped through the snow, your gloved hand in his bare one, because Eddie Munson would rather have his fingers fall off than wear gloves, walking up and down the rows looking for the perfect tree.
You needed one that wasn't too tall, it needed to fit in your apartment after all, but not too short. You had both decided you wanted it more on the fuller side, not a skinny tree. You could have sworn that you looked at every single tree at the tree farm before finally finding one that met Eddies perfect tree criteria.
" Look Sweetheart, I know you think I'm just being super picky but it's important to me that it's fucking perfect. It's my first REAL tree, and it's for our first Christmas. I want nothing but the best for my Princess." He wrapped an arm around your waist and drew you near." What do you think?"
If Eddie was happy, you were happy." I love it."
A big smile spread across his face. "Great, let's chop this fucker down then!"
You watched as your boyfriend laid down in the snow, clad only in his leather jacket t-shirt and jeans, and reached for the saw.
You leaned down and handed it to him and he winked at you." Thanks Doll."
You felt your cheeks get warm despite the cold. All it took was a wink and a smile from this man and you heart melted.
The tree was down a few moments later, than the two of you brought it up to the little outside booth, paid for it and grabbed a couple cups of hot chocolate for the road.Luckily the tree fit in the back of the van with some fancy finagling.
You looked up at Eddie and smiled wrapping your arms around his neck. "Here's to new traditions baby." You stood on your top toes to kiss him and he lowered his cool lips to yours- than proceed to slip his icicle fingers under the multiple layers you wore and onto your warm skin. You gasped and you felt him smile against your lips.
" Your nothing but trouble Munson."
" And yet you still love me despite my faults."
" Your only fault is that you refuse to wear the appropriate outerwear in the wintertime, than you use my body as your own personal space heater."
" That's because your hot stuff Sweetheart."
" And your a Sweet talker. Start up the van Mister, it's fucking freezing out here."
" Whatever you say Ma'am."
When you got home the two of you struggled to get the tree into the apartment but you were successful, you put it into the stand, made sure it was secure than went to get some decorations while the tree warmed up.
You went simple but colorful, stands upon strands of colorful lights, some silver garland, and multicolored glass bulbs of all shapes and sizes.
Eddie wound in the lights and put a star on the top of the tree and you carefully placed the garland on, making sure each layer was perfectly symmetrical.
And now it was time for your favorite part- the Ornaments.
You hummed along to the Christmas carols playing on your radio.
"So, what is it baby? What's your favorite Christmas song?"
Eddie smirked and carefully handed you a shiny gold ball." That's tough Princess, I'm kind of partial to the Chipmunks....but, I also like the Rockin around the Christmas tree song too. Ya know the one where she sings," Rockin' around the Christmas tree , let the Christmas spirit ring, later we'll have some fuckin pie -"
A laugh burst from your lips. "PUMPKIN pie Baby, not fuckin pie!"
He looked at you with an innocent look on his face." No way , it's fuckin pie. Wayne has been singing it that way for years."
" Alright so in your world it's Fuckin pie, Jesus Christ Eddie- I'll never be able to unhear it now!"
He smirked." Your welcome Angel." He bowed dramatically, than placed hooks in two shiny blue spheres. " Think you could help me out with my blue balls?"
You smiled and rolled your eyes." Your really on a roll tonight Eds."
" I like to think that my quick wit makes me charming and charismatic." He batted his eyelashes at you flashing you his boyish grin.
" Your fucking adorable and you know it." You leaned forward and kissed him." Now Baby, the sooner we get this tree decorated the sooner I can give you a very special present."
" Oooh, I like the sound of that Sweetheart. " He placed the balls on tree than wrapped you up in his arms. " Is it naughty or nice?"
" It's very naughty but it will feel very nice."
Eddie scooped you up in his arms. " Tree looks great to me, perfect in fact. And now It's time for me open my present."

You like historical clothing, yes? Would you be willing to either give me some tips or resources about historical Lithuanian clothing for men? Thank you!!
Sure I who not mind, i choose the ancient baltic clothing
Early Iron Age (I–IV centuries AD)
Clothing is believed to be of a tunic style. Tablet-woven sashes with simple, longitudinal designs are worn, tied at the waist or to embellish the garment edges. The cloth is woolen, woven on vertical frame looms in a 3-shaft twill pattern. Women’s headwear is embellished with small, round or flat metal pieces, their fronts adorned with ornaments hung on twisted, two-stranded wire. Another special type of women’s headwear from this period covers the temples with a symmetrical pair of flat, ring or coil shaped ornaments. We still do not know if this jewelry was worn for specific occasions. The metal ornaments from the period are subtle in form, made of silver filigree, with incrustations of azure blue glass and framed in red, black or green enamel.
In the later part of this period, these types of ornaments, as well as elaborate multicolored glass bead necklaces brought from the Roman Empire, are no longer in evidence. The dominant technique for making ornaments becomes metal casting; decorative elements echo patterns found in tablet-woven sashes: longitudinal designs made up of dots, triangles, or series of open circles. Designs on brooches consist primarily of arched ladders. Long needle-like pins worn by women are bobbin shaped, or less commonly they have rounded blue ends, worn in pairs, joined together with one or two small chains and pinned to the shoulder region. Ornaments worn around the neck have trumpet or cone-shaped ends, often with azure blue dangles. Bracelets are massive and cut from a round piece of metal, or less commonly, made from braided pieces of metal. During this period both men and women wear such arm decorations, usually one on each wrist. Bracelets made of braided metal are especially popular.
Middle Iron Age (V–VIII centuries AD)
The clothing style as well as the cloth worn during the Middle Iron Age remains much the same as before: the woolen cloth is still woven on upright frame looms, and sashes have the same linear patterns. The metal ornaments, however, are not as subtle in style as before. They are much larger and the bodies of many of the pins and brooches are made of bronze and covered with a thin layer of silver; minimizing the amount of precious metal used.
During this period women begin wearing skull caps – a few rows of short woven decorative elements, interspersed with cast flat metal pieces, decorated with metal eyelets and strung together on woolen thread. Bracelets are still massive, with only the portion encircling the wrist being somewhat narrowed, their ends are now wider. Women wear one or two on each arm, while men adopt the habit of wearing one very large bracelent on the left wrist. This is the so-called “warrior” bracelet, intended to protect the wrist when holding a battle shield.
Necklaces made of glass beads are typically worn only by women, although men of the Aukštaičiai tribe also wear such neck ornaments. Both men and women wear amulets made of amber – typically a large bead, cone-shaped at both ends, that was hung from a brooch, sash, or woman’s straight pin. As before, needle-type pins are worn in pairs, connected with small chains and decorated with small hanging ornaments. In the northern regions these are a woman’s primary accessory clothing element; brooches, such as those worn by men, are not found with their clothes.
The women of the southern Baltic tribes use brooches to fasten their clothing. These are circular in shape, cast in bronze or silver, and often decorated with serpent head motifs, or sometimes with poppy seed pods. Men wear leather belts with raised metal clasps, and sashes from which they hang their weapons, and tall boots fastened at the knee with belt buckles.
Late Iron Age (IX–XIII centuries AD)
During the Late Iron Age the ornamentation of the clothing worn (and, we believe, the clothing silhouette itself) changes. Brooches now have a horseshoe shape rather than the earlier circular shape. We find some of them in men’s graves, leading us to surmise that men’s clothing from the period was cut down the center and that the brooches were used as buttons. The tablet-woven sashes now have more complicated patterns of geometric rhombi, and cross and swastika motifs.
Along with woolen cloth, beginning with the 10th century, we now find cloth made of linen. The larger quantity of woven material leads us to believe, that towards the end of this period, the Balts, like other European peoples, have now learned to use horizontal looms. With the advent of flax cultivation, we begin to see the use of thread made of a wool/flax combination in woven sashes and later, in scarves.
As before, women enjoy wearing knotted skull caps, although now their small metal ornaments are no longer cast, but rather hammered into various shapes and embellished with intertwined ellipses, swastikas, triangles and rhombi. These pieces are strung on braided or spun linen thread rather than on strands of wool. Bracelets are mostly of braided metal. Men continue wearing a massive bracelet on their left wrist, but now these are wrapped in a long woven sash and strung with small rings (chainmail). The Semigallian wimples are adorned similarly with small chains strung together on a long string, as are Samogitian womens’ hats/headwear. Maple tree whirligig-shaped ornaments hang from their fronts.
Clothing often is embellished with tiny round metal beads, a style especially favored by Semigallians. Samogitian women string and hang beads in a flat rhombus shape on their robes, so that as they move, the beads touch each other and make a tinkling sound. Selonian women like to pin tubular bronze pins on their robes to form various geometric designs; the tunics of the Latgalian men are similarly adorned.
Important parts of the “dress uniform” of warriors/soldiers are tall boots and a leather belt covered with hammered bronze plates ending in woven bronze tassels. During this period neck ornaments are made of braided metal with loop and hook closures. Those worn by Selonian women have flat, curved ends decorated with geometric motifs; some have additional flat metal pieces or small round bangles arranged in a trapeze shape. Often these bangles are used to form a part of womens’ necklaces along with braided elements and glass beads. As before, bracelets are mostly of braided metal, although their central portions are widened and geometric forms added.
XIII–IV centuries AD
The changes in outfits worn during the 13th – 14th centuries are even greater. Along with the traditional and locally made garments of linen and wool, we now find imported weaves of silk and brocade. Because of their expense, these materials are used only in sashes and textile-based headwear. Plaid scarves can now be found. Headwear has also changed; now it is made of sashes of wool or silk and decorated with small, four or five-sided flat plates; spaces between them are filled with threaded bead embroidery (biserio).
The shape of brooches changes, such that now we find round, cast brooches with a hole in their center used for fastening. Small horseshoe-shaped brooches are found arranged vertically on the right side of the neck, most likely having been used to fasten the opening of a dress or underclothes. Bracelets are uncommon and the ones found are now of a different shape – in the form of bands made from pieces of bent, decorated sheets of metal, or tripartite and joined with loops.
Necklaces are made from small glass beads, with rounded, four-sided, or cross-shaped dangles and seashells. Earrings are a new accessory and are worn primarily by Balt women, who also begin to wear metal-plated belts of the type that men wear, as well as a new “invention” from the West – leather pouches with closures attached to their belts. Also worn are amulets – claws of male bears encased in bronze, and cast bronze keys with rhombus-shaped tops in a gothic style.
The men’s outfits of this period are much harder to determine from the available archaeological material. Nevertheless, we can deduce that men wear woolen socks and tall boots, and linen underclothes. They sport wool tunics woven on a three shaft loom, with their garments held together with bronze plated belts from which would hang a leather pouch and knife.

Has Dal made his own jewellery? Does he put symbolism into it, or does he prefer the simple symmetry and beauty of a well-cut stone?
He has! Several pieces he wears, he has made.
Sometimes there is symbolism, especially if a customer has requested it in a commission. He would allow patrons to request certain motifs or shapes, and will even accept stones from them if they have a specific one they wish to have cut or shaped. This made his work a bit more complicated and time-consuming, but gave him an edge over others who only offered pre-made jewelry. He enjoyed it, and takes pride in the quality of his work, which brought customers back again and again.
For himself, Dalamus enjoys the smooth, symmetrical shapes of typical cabochons, and the beauty that comes from the natural colors within the stones that reveal themselves during polishing. He finds putting symbolism in the jewelry he wears, himself, to be mostly unnecessary, but might shape the metal parts of the jewelry into things like daggers, spiders or other animals.
He, personally, finds most faceted gemstones boring. Sure, they are shiny. But where is the variation? What about different shapes? What about multicolored stones? What is the fun of being able to see through a stone, when you could look at and appreciate the natural beauty and variation of the stone itself? Faceted gemstones are best used as accents rather than centerpieces.
Faceted stones are certainly beautiful, but are they interesting? Are they more interesting than the gentle looping bands in malachite? The crack-like lines in jasper? The stippling in gneiss? Dalamus thinks not.

…. What Zircon saw beyond the door sent surging electricity through every nerve in xir body.
A thin figure was seated in a comfortable armchair near the opposite wall, with an unlit cigarette in his left hand. He wore a sky blue suit, his hair reached his shoulders and was a vibrant, fiery orange-red. His face, brushed with brightly coloured makeup, was strangely symmetrical and bore a thoughtful expression as he stared somewhere into the distance; he looked more like a doll than a living being, except for his eyes, which were a greenish gray, and contained a hopeful spark, with one pupil visibly bigger than the other. Zircon’s eyes darted to golden circle glittering brightly in his forehead: xe had seen this being before.
Xe had looked at him in awe in faded photographs, watched holographic images of him sing the songs that inspired xir career through speakers, emulated him in the mirror with an imaginary guitar in xir hands for decades, worried that xe might be copying his style a bit too closely…
But it simply couldn’t be. Ziggy Stardust was dead. His body was discovered in xir own universe over a century ago, with no signs of damage but undeniably deceased, his ashes were scattered across the Milky Way galaxy, it was all public information, and the world of music mourned. Zircon had mourned with it, crying xirself to sleep at the thought that the greatest musician in the universe, quite possibly in the Multiverse, would never release another album again, xe’d never see xir idol live, that of all the beings in the universe, it had to be him.
And yet…
“You’ll be Zircon Moongazer, right? Kuria’s told me to expect you.”
Xe would know that voice, with the accent almost reminiscent of the one he often heard on Earth, anywhere. Zircon resisted the urge to pinch xirself; it couldn’t not be a dream, but xir own thumping hearts and the whirlwind of thoughts in xir mind could only be reality.
“Don’t be shy, you can come closer if you want.”
Zircon took a few nervous steps forward. Xe was only a meter or so away from him now. Ziggy got to his feet with a strange grace to his movement, dropping the still unlit cigarette into a nearby empty ashtray, and extended a faintly glittering hand for Zircon to shake. Even in his platform boots, he was considerably shorter than Zircon, who raised xir arm… and stopped, the excitement in xir fingers almost panic, almost painful.
“Go on!” Ziggy encouraged, with a nod.
Zircon reached out and grabbed the hand. Smooth. Smaller than xirs. Covered in a strange, soft powdery texture. Cold, but clearly not dead. Real. Undeniably alive.
The excited child in xir mind who had held that first record in xir hands with joyful tears in xir eyes broke loose, and xe shook his hand with all of the energy xe felt when xe had entered the room. Xe didn’t even notice the increasing speed in vigor with which xe moved xir hand up and down over the soaring feeling in xir chest. Ziggy Stardust was alive! Alive, and standing right in front of xir! Xe was shaking Ziggy Stardust’s hand! Xe was-
CRACK.
A little explosion of glittering space dust, like a tiny nebula, clouded Zircon’s vision for a couple of seconds.
Then, xir heart stopped.
Xe was still holding Ziggy’s hand, which had broken clean off at the elbow joint as Ziggy’s sky blue sleeve hung, loose and empty, from the elbow down. At the break, the arm seemed to be tightly packed full of that same multicolored glitter that was now settling everywhere including the floor, the armchair and the fronts of both Zircon’s and Ziggy’s clothes.
“Oh my stars! Holy crap! Mr Stardust I’m so sorry!”
Xe heard xir own voice break at squeaky, panicked peaks as xe yelled xir horrified apologies, but Ziggy only responded with a wide smile, revealing a set of slightly crooked teeth.
“No worries! Does that all the time.”
He took the left arm from Zircon’s hand with his right, nonchalantly inserting it back into his sleeve and twisting it slightly in place.
“Believe me, it’s gotten me in some way worse situations. I’ve learned to reinforce the fingers so I don’t accidentally slice them off playing guitar in the middle of a gig, but the elbow joints have always been a right piece of work. This body’s due for a replacement soon anyway.”
He tested the movement in his fingers, rolling them in sync in a single smooth motion as though strumming invisible guitar strings, despite the fact that, from what Zircon had just seen, there was not a bone nor a muscle in that hand.
“H…how?”
He chuckled.
“I get that question a lot. Kuria and the Starman Eternal say you’re a trustworthy fellow, so I guess I can spill the whole truth. I happen to be something called an Okkina. My kind don’t have physical bodies at birth, so we drift in space and gather the dust of fallen stars to build a form for ourselves. Aside from being proof of my remarkable lack of naming creativity, this body isn’t really ‘me’, but it does contain ‘me’, if that makes any sort of sense.”
Zircon nodded.
“If one body’s destroyed, or I just feel like moving on from it, I can just hop out and make myself a new one. Regeneration takes a little while, but… I suppose that clears up the whole ‘legally dead in your universe’ thing, eh? Now, does this mean I can hypothetically live forever? Well, not under normal circumstances, consciousness tends to drift apart around the sixth millennium, but I happened to have an encounter with one ‘Keeper of Strings’ during my travels, and, well… let’s just say the Starman Eternal allowed it, and you needn’t ever worry about losing me again!”
Zircon remained silent for a moment, taking it all in.
“Mr Stardust, that’s… incredible… I…”
“Oh, cut the ‘Mr Stardust’ formalities, just ‘Ziggy’s fine! I didn’t come here to recount my life story, given the fact that you likely know most of it already and can fill in the gaps with what I’ve told you just now. I came here because I love your music, and I’d like to propose… let’s call it a collaboration!”
This time, Zircon actually did pinch xirself in the side, prompting another chuckle from Ziggy.
“Of course, Mr Star- I mean, Ziggy! I’d love to hear all of your suggestions!!”
(I’ll finish this later, I still have ideas)

High Education, Low Expectation
@chimaericrealities || Starter from plotting!
The room is way, way bigger than Shinji expected.
He stands in the doorway with a backpack slung across his shoulders. His right hand grips the handle of a big, beat-up suitcase with wheels. In his left hand, he holds his prized possession: a vintage Crosley record player, once bright red, but faded and dinged up around the edges now. It’s the portable kind that folds up small and nice. It’s a touch of comfort, a touch of home, in a place that Shinji can already tell will smack him across the face with an abundance of new, unfamiliar experiences.
The place looks empty, so Shinji takes a few steps inside. After about half a second’s consideration, he shrugs out of his backpack and deposits it on one of the extra-long twin beds. It doesn’t look like Shinj’s roommate has so much as swung by yet, so Shinji figures he gets to call dibs on which side of the room is his - not, he reflects idly, that it makes much difference. The room is unadorned and completely symmetrical.
He walks his way over to the window and peers down into the quadrangle below. Two kids toss a frisbee back and forth. A group of friends sprawl together on a picnic blanket. Some folks stroll down the paved pathways that cut through well-manicured grass. One lonely-looking kid reads a book on a wrought-iron bench.
It’s... so classic. It’s so fucking collegiate. Who knew, eh?
He didn’t admit it to any of his pals back home, but somewhere in the back of his mind, part of Shinji wonders whether he’ll be able to fit in in a place like this. He knows, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that he’ll be able to sell it - that he’ll be able to charm his way through parties, and smooth-talk his way through difficult questions in the classroom, and pick up quick on the latest trends and fashions alongside the most tapped-in of his peers - but he’s curious about the way it’ll all feel, deep down.
Will he ever feel a sense of ownership over this place?
Hell - will he even make any real, true, honest-to-god friends?
Shinji turns away from the window. He sets his record player down on the chunky, wooden desk and pops it open. He connects the fraying power cord to the input in the back and punches the power source into a wall outlet. He sidles back over to his suitcase, lays it unceremoniously down on its side, and zips it open. He didn’t bring much in the way of clothes - just the best of the best, and enough to get him through about two weeks without repeating an outfit, if he’s reasonably creative - because the suitcase is crammed with as many carefully protected vinyls as Shinji could manage. He fishes through his stock, fast and businesslike, until he finds what he’s looking for. As he rises and runs his thumbs along the edge of the multicolored album cover, he can feel his skinny shoulders sagging in relief. He slides the record out of its sleeve, lays it on the turntable, and drops the needle.
With that, Shinji plops into the desk chair, leans his head back, and sticks his hands behind his head, in a concentrated effort to unwind a little. Who knows? he thinks, as he lets the first strains of familiar music wash over him on this first day in an unfamiliar place. Maybe I’ll get lucky. Maybe my roommate’s into music, and we’ll hit it off right away...
