The Blacktongue Thief

If there is one work of fantasy released over thr past year I keep going back to, it is this one. Every read I discover new things I missed on my last read thru or listen( the audiobook is fantastic due to how musical the book is). The world is rich and original(War Corvids my dudes!), and....honestly the narrator giving first hand perspective is wonderful. Kinch is one of my favorite thief archetype characters ever written and I loooooved the lies of llocke llamora and 4his just.....takes the cake with how its written. The author is a Rennie I used to go to the shows of here at the Michigan Renfair every year when he did his show here, and his works are fantastic. he typically does horror and his urban fantasy work the Necromancers House is also fantastic. Give Christopher Buhlmann a read. you won't regret it.

Honestly? Freezing drizzle is the WORST. Like my mom said many years ago: "I can handle cold, and I can handle wet, but not both at the same time." (Never mind the driving part!) Fun facts about Texas winters that many people don't realize (because why not): 1. My friend from Michigan once worked a renfair here and was talking about her amazement at the reactions of the fair-goers to an unexpected cold snap (it was in the 30s). She finally goes, "it's like you don't own warm hats or something!" and I had to tell her "we don't." She was still confused until I explained "they don't sell warm hats here. The best we can do is your plain old beanie from a chain store. That's all we get. That's the warmest we can buy." 2. Relatedly- you are very hard-pressed to find proper layering clothes here. The only warm things are bulky outer layers. The only place I have ever found true thermals/warm but thin things meant to layer with is Academy (sports/outdoors chain store). Most people don't think to go to Academy unless they hunt/are outdoorsy people, so most Texans are completely unaware that you can indeed layer up without bulk. 3. Even the people who know those thin layers exist don't know how to layer properly. We need layers so infrequently that we never remember how to do it. Even last night I had to check with my fiance again. He said, "if you do have to go anywhere, layer up." And I was just like "..... remind me how that goes?" (Already half asleep, he rattled off- cami, t-shirt, fleece, jacket. I had to infer the "long sleeve" part of t-shirt, lol.) 4. And let's address the elephant in the room- DRIVING IN WINTER WEATHER. This is a true sticking point for me because I endured 22 YEARS of people (including my own father! Who should have known this!) making fun of Texans' driving in the snow before I realized where the issue really was. My fiance lived in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Kentucky growing up. He told me plenty of crazy weather stories. He told me about the ice storm that covered the entire state of Kentucky in several inches of ice. He started telling me all about how dangerous it was and how the only thing that scares him about winter driving was ice. He had repeatedly explained to me before why driving in snow was not actually dangerous and how easy it really was. I became extremely confused and it took several minutes of probing back and forth for the lightbulb moment to hit. I asked, "but how is driving in the snow not dangerous if ice is so dangerous?" He thought this was a stupid question, "Ice and snow are different..." "yes, but isn't there ice under the snow??" "...not usually...?" I was speechless for a second. Completely shook, tbh. Now it was his turn to be confused. I had to explain: "here, it always rains first and then dips below freezing. The ground here is almost never truly frozen, so even if it DOES start right off with snow, it melts at first and re-freezes. If we get any snow that sticks, I guarantee you there is ice underneath that 1/4" of snow. THAT'S why we freak out and shut everything down when it snows." So anyway, obviously you are more understanding than most and I hope this doesn't come across as preaching at you. I just thought I'd take the time to spread my knowledge that I have accumulated over recent years. (Also, in Robert's defense in #4, I have now seen it snow and stick without ice underneath ONCE. It happened. And I had to drive in it. I understand now how driving in snow is not really dangerous as long as it really is just snow!) Tl;dr- Texans freak out in winter. Please do not make fun of us. They do not sell warm hats here and there is only one place to buy layering clothes that most people don't know about. Also, the REAL reason we shut everything down over the tiniest amount of snow is because there is ice under that snow.

Since the beginning of March I have been going non-stop being busy with shooting for @stonecloverband, moving twice, two weddings this year, numerous birthday parties, Michigan Renfaire, @theatre.bizarre shooting small photography gigs, and several Halloween parties. The past two weekends have been a mix of relaxing and catching up on projects/chores.I even managed to touch up my hair color and cut my bangs super short. Though I still have a long way to go, I’m slowly staring to feel human again✖️ (at Ferndale, Michigan)

I’m starting to get sad that we’re getting to the end of the season. After tomorrow there’s only one more season. And then I have to wait till August to come. Holly Grove is home.
