Maurice- Ch 2 | A realization

Don't you just hate it when you find out your tenant has been secretly using his home to host and torture someone for his own sick pleasure? Simply the worst way to start an afternoon.

It would’ve been a pleasant afternoon, drizzling slightly on clean sidewalks and an overgrown lawn, children in raincoats playing in the neighboring yards, and birds singing happily under the shower. It would’ve been a pleasant afternoon, but not for Denice or Martin. No… Not for them in the slightest. Denice tightens her grip around the umbrella handle as she listens faintly to Martin’s complaints.

“I’m telling you Denice, you’ve got to stop thinking that Roger was up to this shit. Sure, he was a little off sometimes, but he paid the rent just fine.”

“And I’m telling you that I heard something in here. I could’ve sworn I heard a scream when I was walking by. That’s no dog, Martin. It sounded human and scared and I-“

“And you what, Denice?” Denice looked at him with a sort of restlessness, every once in a while she gazed at the innocuous exterior. This house used to be hers. It used to feel nice to walk by and it used to feel safe. But now… all it gives her is a sense of dread.

“Are you really going to break into a tenant’s home just to investigate a random shout you heard? That could literally be anything!”

She crosses her arms. “I know what I heard, Mart. And it’s not his home anymore; he’s dead.”

Martin groans, dragging his hands down his face, releasing it with a snap. “Denice, you’re being unreasonable. The guy could’ve had a kid over-“

“He has no kids. And he mentioned it when signing the lease, too.”

“Like hell you remember when he signed that lease.”

“Steel. Trap. Memory. He said, and I quote; ‘I know this neighborhood is real quiet, so don’t worry, I never have anyone over, it’s just me in here.’ End quote.”

Martin rolls his eyes. “He could’ve been watching a movie-“

“That was no movie. It was guttural- and- and real.” Denice shudders, hugging herself as she takes another longing look at the house.

“It could’ve just been him yelling after a rough day-“

“The voice was too high compared to Roger’s.”

“It could’ve been coming from another house, or a person nearby.”

“It was coming from the house.”

Martin stares at her, half nonplussed and half exasperated. When Denice raises an eyebrow at him he simply looks away, staring at nothing in particular as he finds the words to say in response.

When he finally looks back at her, he’s no longer fully disbelieving her, but he’s definitely hesitant. “Look. You heard that noise weeks ago, Denice. Whatever it was, it isn’t there anymore. Plus, do really you think I’m going to go in there when our tenant might have been a psychopath with- people in his house?”

Denice almost glared, but instead she simply took to walk down the dirty stone path to the entryway.

“Denice- Denice, what in the absolute fuck are you doing?!”

“If you don’t want to go, fine. But voice or not, I still need to evaluate the condition of the house.”

“His family might still want his things-”

“He has none he’s close with. He signed his coworkers as references, too. Plus, I have the right to inspect.”

Denice opens the three locks in the front door like clockwork and swiftly opens the door to a dark and dusty apartment. It’s a fairly straightforward layout, with an L-shaped couch and some pillows, a plain carpet, and a coffee table in front of it. On the adjacent wall there’s a television on a shelved stand with some mildly off abstract paintings, strewn with messy strokes of black, blue and red paint. She glances at it for a second and finds herself looking away just as quickly.

Despite that, it was a normal-looking home, if not unsettling because of how abandoned it felt.

The smell is bad, but bearable as she turns on the lights. The furnished living room has a thin layer of untouched dust coating it, as though it finally had time to settle. It’s as she enters the kitchen that the putrid smell hinted at before hits full throttle. She swallows dryly and takes a step back, bumping into… someone’s chest…

Denice shrieks, struggling as a hand is placed on her shoulder-

“Shush! It’s me!” She snaps open her shut eyes and relaxes only slightly upon seeing Martin’s worried face looking back. He retreats his hand and takes two paces back himself, arms up in caution. “Sorry I grabbed you.”

“Oh-!” She heaves to herself, pressing a palm to her chest as if guiding her lungs to stretch further. “I-It’s okay, just don’t- don’t do that again, Mart.”

Martin nods, grimacing from the overall scent of the home. “I’m really sorry… Um.. I found these keys? They were on a keyring next to the door, but they don’t seem to belong to any of the locks.”

“Keep them for now. Maybe he changed some? We’ll have to check if he put a lock or three somewhere here.”

“Isn’t that against the lease?” he asks whilst putting the small wad of keys in his back pocket.

“I’ve got other things to worry about right now… But we’ll need to look through the whole house.”

Denice inspects the room. Kitchenware, some appliances- a toaster oven, a blender… A very… diverse knifeblock… She pulls out a knife, only to find that it seemed recently polished.

Martin notices her interest in them. “Maybe he was interested in keeping everything maintained. The rest of the house seems pretty neat.”

Denice glances at the oxidation creeping from one of the thinner knives and doesn’t touch it. “…Maybe.”

“Is it me, or is the smell coming in stronger from the refrigerator?” Martin asks, but seems hesitant to open it.

“There’s only one way to find out.”

Martin grimaces and looks away from the fridge as he pries it open. The lights snap on, revealing worms and maggots feasting on rotted food. One or two grown flies emerge from the indistinguishable piles of muck and escape the fridge as Martin slams the door shut. “SHIT!”

“The fridge wasn’t closed properly, I’m guessing…”

“You’re guessing? Shit’s a pigsty.”

“That’s what happens when food rots near the presence of flies, Mart.”

Martin gags. “No shit, Sherlock. Hell, did anybody even come in the house after he died?”

“I doubt it… Let’s just move on.”

“Let’s.” Replies Martin, looking through the cabinets. There were several lining the corners of the room, about twenty total; ten above and ten below. Unsurprisingly, a variety of spiders had long made their homes inside of the spaces from the absence of movement. The occasional pest would skitter between the raised boards, one of which being a cockroach large enough to garner a scream from the buxom woman. Martin was ever quick to kill it, slightly more composed than his counterpart.

“I don’t get why he’d have so little spices and so much salt.” Martin finally remarks, opening one of the upper cabinets.

“Maybe he likes pickling food?” Denice supplies, frowning at the dust layering the pots and pans below.

“I doubt it. His fridge would’ve been a lot more tolerable- and less… maggoty.” Martin shudders and proceeds.

Denice is opening yet another cabinet door when the realization finally hits her- She snaps back to a rather calm Martin, who was inspecting one of the bags. “Wait! Mart!”

Martin simply stared at her, nonplussed. “What?”

Denice stares back at him, then his hand. “Wait… didn’t you mention that salt burned you guys?”

Martin looks at the salt in question and chuckles softly, then pats the leaking paper bag. “Don’t worry, salt is only a big deal for obligate vamps.”

“Oh.”

“Yep. Plus I’m almost sure this is full of drugs.”

“It’s too granulated for that, Mart.”

“You never know.” Martin shrugged and placed it on the counter, continuing his run-through.

Why was she even doing this anymore? Did she really want to know what else was here?

…And yet, she finds herself opening the last cabinet regardless, surprised to see a different, smaller fridge inside it.

“…Mart, did we ever leave a mini-fridge here?”

“No? why would he own a separate fridge? Did he own snakes? a lizard of some kind?”

Denice cracks it open, shuddering at the sickening smell of iron and old blood, all in bloated vacuum-sealed bags, separating into clear, off-yellow plasma and coagulated chunks of dark rot. “He- he’s human, right?”

“Yeah? His ID would’ve specified if he were a supernatural.”

“Martin… Either he was a vampire, or he has enough blood to house one for no reason.”

“Blood? Wait-“ Martin ambles over to see it and retches at the sight, spitting into an overfilled trashcan nearby.

“Holy shit.“

“Martin- hey, it's okay man.” Denice rubs small circles on his back, and Martin coughs in his panic until it slowly died down. All is quiet between them, buzzing with unsaid questions.

"It's the smell that's killing me. It's wrong. Blood shouldn't be.." He straightens- realizing something until the last words finish his thought. "...wasted. Denice."

She perks at the call. "What?"

“You need a license to buy blood.” He silently mentions, the statement lingers in the air, weighter. His slitted pupils are wide and anxious.

Denice looks back at the minifridge, glancing at the almost rudimentary setup for storing the bags, compared to the professional handling she's seen with actual banks on the few times she accompanied Martin.

“I think-… I think this was his own. And you aren’t supposed to house vampires—even if you sign for them.” Denice feels her stomach lurch as she closes the door of the minifridge.

Martin looks at the blood with an apathetic sort of disgust, the bags having insulted his senses for the last time. “Will you please close the fridge already? The kitchen smells awful as it is.”

“Oh- Sorry. Let me just-“ She tries to close it normally, but it doesn’t really shut. A bit more pressure is applied, and even then the door bounces back open. One of the bags had clearly tilted out of shape when she opened it, but… Denice was not about to touch it more than she had to already.

She gives it a hearty shove.

There’s a squelch when it shuts, leaving a gush of sickly, yellow-tinted plasma to shoot and bead along the dirty linoleum flooring. Some clots of dark, runny sickness sputter and run down the fridge door

“…I burst one.” Denice gags while a strangled sound escapes Martin’s chest.

Martin heaves dryly, pressing a fist to his lips and an arm around his stomach as though it would stop him from vomiting altogether. They really should’ve placed a better window in the kitchen.

This could’ve been a nice afternoon.

“Den- Denice, I need to take a breather, yeah? or- or- I’ll definitely throw up. Let’s get to somewhere else- I can’t- I-”

“Y-Yeah… Let’s just get out and recuperate a little.”

Denice walked out of the kitchen with Martin following closely behind, his breaths stifled to try and limit the amount of bad air he inhaled.

But now Denice was even more unsure if she wanted to see what else lied in the house. Even with someone as strong as Martin beside her, she felt nervous. Uncertain.

Afraid.

Martin seemed to sense her worry and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “We can always leave. You don’t have to stay here and see whatever else was in here.”

Denice enjoys his touch a little longer, thinking on what to say in response. In truth, she did want to leave. She wanted to leave from the beginning. But seeing just what they found now… Well, the knowledge would only eat at her if she didn’t find a conclusion to this.

“…Let’s just see the rest of the place, and we’ll leave right away. Is that okay with you?” She says despite herself. Martin looks absolutely disinterested in continuing the search for the scream’s source, but sighs. “I’ll go.” The relief Denice feels at those two words is immense. “But only because I don’t want you to be in here by yourself.”

“Thank you Mart.” “Don’t mention it.” His tone is curt yet warm, and Denice opens the door to the staircase with a bit more confidence.

They walked up the pine stairs with little conversation- the smell noticeably got better as they left the kitchen area, until it was replaced entirely by the musty scent of dust and no air circulation. The other two bedrooms were normal; they were replaced with an office and storeroom, both of which had no outstanding features. In truth, besides the paintings, there was a very little amount of personality in his home décor.

The attic was a different story altogether.

Martin bumped his head for the third time on the attic’s ceiling when Denice had seen it- shackles. Chains. Restrains of all shapes and sizes. Whips, prods, pokers and knives. Tasers and Gags and ropes and belts and flails- and a bowl.

A bowl of water, next to a spray bottle. Martin touches it and recoils- hissing to himself as he stared at his now reddening hand.

His burned hand.

They stumble out of there, disconcerted and horrified as each of them try not to think too hard on their findings. The lawn door creaks and wanes on its rusty hinges until they both find a place to sit under a lawn table’s umbrella and chairs.

And so they sat, not quite talking but exchanging conversation through glances alone. Martin takes a deep, shuddering breath and holds his head in both hands while Denice hugs herself, desperately trying to make sense of it.

But no matter what, they couldn’t quite make sense of it. It could have easily been confirmation-bias, but every path seemed to lead back to her original theory, and they hated it.

Martin still looked unnerved, his grey-tinted features dark despite the sun peeking out on him. He tapped his fingers against the clouded glass and grimaced- rubbing his fingers together at the gritty feeling of muck layering the table. He takes a quick sip of his flask and grunts as his burnt hand slowly starts regrowing the tissue.

"...It was concentrated." He eventually says after noticing her worried glances. "Fuckin' liquid was probably saltier than the ocean. Could've been acid for all I know. "

Denice felt herself losing composure as well- an internal tremor echoed through her as her worries piled on. Further and further it pushed her will to continue looking. Yet the most she could do was retreat into a better space- a more optimistic section of her thoughts where the noise she heard was nothing more than a figment of her imagination.

She couldn’t imagine how Martin could feel about this- he was a vampire himself, and was now dealing with the possible reality of one of their tenants illegally hosting an unregistered vampire in his home. Torturing a vampire. Feeding it with his own blood to avoid getting into a registry.

She can't unthink it. She doesn't want it to be true, and yet she feels it's growing more real by the second.

She's rethinking every instance with the tenant, no longer a placid young man with a mild interest in the arts, but holding those pokers, those knives, those weapons, and using it on someone. On her. On Martin.

She desperately hoped for it to be a joke. A gag. Something unreal and unbelievable, as Martin had told her just an hour ago. But reality was setting in too quickly for fantasy to fill in the gaps, and now she had seen too much.

Martin was the first to speak.

“I’m calling the police.” It’s such a firm statement that it leaves Denice even more unsure. If they called the police, what would happen? Did they really expect something to make sense if they did? For some justice when they didn’t even know if the man did this? They would most certainly laugh. Laugh at them both for calling them over simply because they saw some odd things in his own home.

She remembers how each weapon had drying flecks of dark ichor lacing them and gags.

“…It's not going to be a good idea. There isn't much in terms of evidence.”

Martin glared at her momentarily, his gaze only softening upon seeing her distress. “We can show them what we found-“

“And then what?”

Martin looked away and at his hand, pensively staring at the mottling patchwork of repairs on his skin. “I don’t know.”

Denice unknit her brow. “Well… we still have one last room to search through. None of the keys fit the other doors. If we see something truly incriminating, we'll call.”

Martin flexed his now-healed hand and pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling forcibly as though trying to grasp his last strands of composure. Or savoring the fresh air while he still could.

“Fine, but I’m not going back there for longer than I have to, and neither are you. Comprendes?”

She nods, now set and resolute. Martin stood up and stretched, his joints popping until he heaved a breath and walked to follow his partner. The one place they hadn’t searched. The last room. The room they both dreaded entering.

The basement.

"Where do I begin?

well, of course- the start. My earliest memory...was about when I was three years of age...I felt freezing and paralyzed- I then found as I grew up my father had put me in the garage in winter. The scum...he was a genius yet the bastard somehow thought putting a child in the cold would make me resilient...thanks to those days, I am sick, weak, scrawny. Days never stop coming, so those moments are trivial, now- another factor, I'm dead. Anyway, life went on without even a shadow- excluding a girl who I despised shortly after meeting- May Merrington. She was just as despicable as her family's business- her father Tim Merrington was a good man- in terms of achievement.....

and then I was 17. shortly after March, My parents and Takano, my older sister were assassinated. Their deaths hindered me- but never really depressed me. My father, I won't ever miss the jerk, my mother, she seemed to despise all of her own kin and never acknowledged my cry. She wasn't any better than Father. Then Rei- she ignored me her whole life,"

he chuckled.

"And mine, now. So we never had any relationship. She would feel the same about my death if I had died before her. But anyway, that year (1918) late April, I met Lisa, she never told me her last name- I called her Mistress and she was very annoyed by it. She was my caretaker and protector sent by my father who, as she put it, 'realized I was a useless idiot' and had someone in charge of protecting me. She was strange- but enticingly so. she was my bodyguard and some sort of parent, for about 5 years, until I was 22. Oh, I forgot to mention Tanabe. And Chiyo. What an eventful time it was from when I was 17. Tanabe was a small girl who I took in after I found her stowed away in my home. She was the one who killed me. I see why, although. I was not a good caretaker- I was 19 and she created my infatuation for human behavior. She was so malleable and did anything I told her- but she was stubborn all the same. She had opinions that I could not change- but I could create new opinions in her. That's what was so strange to me. Things once created could never be destroyed. Once they learned, it was set in stone and they would fight anything opposing it. But they would quickly accept an opinion they never had and the cycle would repeat. Ah, sorry I got carried away, then Chiyo. She was my first lover- she also kept my infatuation with human behavior going- mostly about desire. She was obviously a serious woman with an interesting attitude, but her fault was youth and she fell to lust. She made me wonder about how people could change. I left them both. Of course! They had things to do and they were growing. But it was unfortunate that Tanabe grew up to kill me. I'm proud of her- she grew...in more ways than personality...well, anyway after all that, I found Benjamin. He was a common enemy of my father and he had just come from a coma. And, oh so surprisingly he tried to kill me!"

he snickered and sighed.

"But he was dealt with. Benjamin was a very lion-like man he fought to no end and took great pride and passion in every move he took. He reminded me of my father. not having the entitled mentality he had although. I respected him so I didn't kill him myself. I had someone else do the deed, and then that would result in my death...then I met Etienne. His real name was Lucien Etienne Abreo. He was some sort of child of Benjamin's. He murdered the killer of the man and then came for me. But Lisa and he fought to the death- well Lisa's death. I actually shed a tear, at her funeral...she was a good person and an even better parent than...whatever father was to her, a waste of beauty too. But my life moved on...I needed something to replace Lisa so I forced Etienne to pay Benjamin's debt in a form of protection. I was also interested in the reason he didn't kill me. He said,

'I...took away somethin' important to you... like ya did me...so now we're strangers until our payment is unbalanced..."

I thought about that for days! What was wrong with this country boy? But I believe I figured out what he meant. He thought that as strangers we owed nothing to each other- but when he met me and I made our trade unbalanced- he killed Lisa to balance it. And then he was balancing his debt protecting me. Etienne was a peculiar man. Even if he was meant to entertain me and replace Lisa, I ended up very close to him. He was my best and only friend."

He looked down distantly, snapping back after a few seconds.

"Until later- a child labor camp paid me generously to bring two very special children, two blonde ones. Etienne didn't know what I was doing at the time when I bought Annie and Vincent. When I bought them he took care of them developed an attachment to them. He discovered, and when they were sold, he lashed out at me and left to go find them...I don't know what happened after that. I do know that the camp is after him, and many more as he made it his absolute mission to destroy the business. He visited me in the hospital when I was terribly ill and bought me medicine, He visited many more times after that. He said he considered us some type of friends, most times when he visited me we just sat in silence, but we said a million words to each other all the same. But then I met a small boy named Quinn who I met during a trade with Tim. He was like a child, to me. Helped me in..."

He groaned and leaned into the chair.

"Oh heavens, don't get me started on my last years. All too much and all too little happened. Many people found out about him.

Maurice Arthur Courtet. He was working behind the scenes to bring down the city. Many didn't notice his handiwork- as he did it meticulously. I was very impressed but blew it off- as the first thing I found out was there was someone from the outside undercover here, and I immediately had him killed. And I had someone track down Maurice. But the cockroach stayed under the radar. And he apparently expected the man to be killed, and he already had the information and a few more people from the outside on his side. It all ended when he found Tanabe. Before that the government of the city released the treaty from the outside agreeing to build the city and I was going to kill Connor Brown- but then..."

"Boom!"

"Tanabe killed me. December 8th, 1936. With a pistol...I died, beautifully though, on the piano."

He looked up and let out a laugh.

"And everything went on without me. The city was uncovered. I died what my father declared me to be,

A useless idiot."

I’m going to do something a little different here today.

I was a 90′s kid, and it really was a different time. Like a few year’s back I was talking to the daughter of one of my cousins, and she mentioned that for her generation there wasn’t any really scary shows on. Like as a kid there was all sorts of horror anthology. Some of it was well done, others were more gross out. I loved this stuff as a kid, and as I grew older I grew to love horror anthology movies and the odd show targetted towards older audiences. There’s copies of Tales from the Crypt that have been calling to me at Walmart for a long time now, just I keep putting it off until I see them on sale.

So, today I want to talk about the horror anthology shows I grew up with. Just what kinda shaped me, so you all know who to blame. I want to rank these, but aside from the first two being at the bottom the rest were up in the air for various reasons. So, let me show you what hurt me.

Grisly Tales for Gruesome Kids. Ahh yes, this quaint little gem from the British Isles...fuck this shit was dark. Like so fucking dark and cynical. It really had the tone of those stories parents tell their kids to get them to behavior while mommy is nursing a hangover. I really hated this one as a kid, but I was always kinda drawn to it. I mean, kids were meeting horrific fates in these stories, sometimes over issues I felt were overblown. It basically answered the question of how dark can you make a children’s show. Love the stop motion though, and still can hear the intro in the back of my mind.

Goosebumps.As a 90′s kid, I was required to either watch the show or read the books. Since I was young when the show started with it’s Y-7 warning to parents, I mostly did the former. It had really good production values for the time, but looking back I feel it was rather tame. In comparison to the other live-action show on this list, I feel like it had better production values but the stories were way weaker. As a kid who grew up with Goosebumps, whenever I hear “What a Twist!” I don’t think of Shamalyan, I think of RL Stein. Some twists were good, others just existed to screw over the leads at the last second. There was also this one episode where the neighbor was a monster that always made me throw up when he ate bugs. Every fucking time.

Freaky Stories. Ahh man, a Canadian classic. Part of YTV’s “Keep it Weird” era, I remember this originally being like a holiday thing around Halloween but then it got it’s own series. It was retellings of various urban legends. Some scary, some just gross. The art style changed in each short to suit the story, every one was told by a narrator starting with “This is a true story. Happened to a friend of a friend of mine...” Some were made sci-fi, others more noir. And between bits there were the antics of Larry the cockroach and Maurice the maggot. It is definitely a product of the 90′s and I loved it so much.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? I always felt like this was the better version of Goosebumps. Sure, the acting was worse at times but the stories were way more original. I was afraid of chameleons for so long because on one episode. But the one thing I really liked was how it could go either way. Some stories could end with the protagonists winning, others end with them being defeated. And some of the designs were really creepy looking. It kept it fresh. And what kid wouldn’t want to be part of a group like the Midnight Society, meeting up in the woods to tell scary stories by the campfire. That my my dream as a kid...or being Batman’s sidekick. Either or. This is probably the one I would want to show my niece when she gets older.

Tales from the Cryptkeeper. The animated series. I first met the Cryptkeeper through this show and the tie-in kid’s game show. Honestly, this was probably the best one of the bunch. It had good stories, it had good art. I’m a little more distant to it because it wasn’t on one of the channels I regularly watched, so when I did catch it felt more like a treat but it just never fully clicked for me. The whole series is officially on youtube, so at times it’s tempting to go back and check it out.

- So, did you catch your murderer?

- Yep, a bunch of them actually. Your payment is on the table, by the way, - Mark answered, lying on the floor with eyes closed, pointing somewhere in the air with his leg, continuing in small voice, - My guess about body explosives was right; if we haven't brought the body to you, there would be mayhem in this very city, - he frowned, - We barely managed to get to their lair in time, - his tone dark, - They already placed a few corpses behind the keep; one actually went off ahead of its time, making a giant hole in the city wall, - he took a deep breath, - I don't want to admit it, my mater is a legionnaire, but...

- The Legion has a hand in this? What jarl is going to do with them? - Aspen took a sit near the table.

- Well, yeah, - elf let out a shaky sigh, - I'm afraid how rebels will respond to this. What a fucking mess. Wonder what mater would say, - he thought aloud, imagining her in front of her. She’d probably say the Legion has no connection with this attack… but she’s a war hero just as much as war criminal with blood on innocents on her hands, she’d try to justify their action, - Anyways. The jarl has them interrogated them at this very moment. They will probably either be thrown in jail or executed, not that anyone would care. The jarl also thanks you for your contribution and wants you to become the coroner for the city, - the elf fell silent for a moment before continuing his speech, - I have another matter to discuss. My sister.

- They want me to gut bodies for them, don't they? - the man shook his head, chuckling, - Sister? I've seen her an hour ago running around that dark elf she've met: she really liked that elf, probably a new idol of hers.

- Not that sister, - he sounded annoyed, - I meant my blood related sister, cousin. She's in trouble I think.

- How many sisters do you actually have? - the ashen haired man raised his brow in question.

- Two, but I'm adopted, you know, - the elf raised from the floor, stretching his arms to the ceiling, moving towards the table. He glanced at the fireplace near him before speaking again, Livaen's voice echoing in his head, - You remember when we had a sleepover back in the Void?

He heard a snicker.

- That's what you call it now?

- Ugh, - he grumbled something under his nose, getting his ass on the table, - I had a dream with her involved, she sounded distressed. Said she's cold, alone, broken; somewhere in a place where fire burns with ice, something along those lines, and then there's a monster that watches her, I dunno. Not much of a help. Any thoughts?

The man leaned closer.

- That dream, when you told me, - his voice thoughtful, low, - you couldn't sleep because I was snoring?

Mark groaned.

- Yes, you do snore.

- I wouldn’t be snoring if someone...

- Can you shove it up your ass? - Mark cut him mid sentence, pain on his face, - This isn't really the time for jokes.

- You really need to do something about that stick up your ass instead, - was heard in return, as he was dragged down in the lap.

- Don't start a fight you cannot win.

- Because you're not so witty? Boo-hoo. You have no idea how funny you are to mess with, have you? - elf groaned ever louder, rolling the eyes, - So what was that about your cousin?

The door creaked open.

- Get a room! - someone hollered, - You are the disgrace!

Visenya, her new found friend and Meltem have entered the building. The girl glanced at men disapprovingly, before moving to the bedroom nearby, crashing on the bed. The new guy followed her sheepishly, possibly afraid to offend the kid with rejection.

- What's with the long faces? - Meltem asked, getting into the vacant chair near the table, - Did we interrupt something?

Mark sighed.

- What a fucking circus. No, you're the person I wanted to talk to, - he adjusted himself, getting comfortable in other man's lap, - There's a problem I need to solve that involves my cousin. She might be in danger, but I have no idea where to find her. Our grandmother would know about her whereabouts, but I haven't seen her in ages and I have no intention on seeing her any time soon.

- Don't think we can ask Narandil to help us out? - Meltem suggested, thinking about the possibilities, - He could help us, he used to date your grandmother after all.

- I thought you're suggesting whether or not he knows where to find Livaen, - Mark snickered, - That'd be a very dumb suggestion of you, definitely worthy of Visenya. But that old witch is on Summerset, I don't see her roaming Skyrim for any reason.

Meltem looked at the window, ideas running around her head like cockroaches, none’s the right one.

- You know, - a moment of silence later, - we should ask those Thalmor agents, - Aspen chimed in, - If your cousin is in trouble, they must have a file on her, especially if she's a noble.

Mark glanced at the man, astonishment in his eyes.

- You are actually right, - he spoke, nearly whispering, looking back at Meltem, - They must have a file regarding her whether she disappeared or not in that embassy. Esmir won't leave her precious granddaughter behind, especially her only heir.

- But there is a problem, you know, - the woman said, - You can't go in there, you're on their most wanted list. I can't go in there either, I'm not exactly a low-profile person after the old man. Narandil can't go too, they have bounty on him that worth a fortune. Visenya is not that smart in the field, - Meltem was interrupted with girl’s “HEY!”, - You could go, - she addressed Aspen, - but with ear prosthetics and makeup.

The trio went silent, thinking about their chances of getting into the embassy unnoticed and safely getting out of there. Mark definitely wasn't an option to go there, he would be captured on sight, put down and sent back to Summerset to his eagerly awaiting grandmother. Meltem could go, but they don't like redguards much, and she definitely doesn't look like a wench or a dancer. Narandil would blow up their entire mission regardless, he's not the one to hold back. Visenya would be better in a support position, because should she fail during the infiltration, she'd be another captive at best that would be successfully exchanged on Mark. Aspen would work fine with a decent amount of yellow paint on top, but that requires a master artisan.

- I'm sorry, I happened to overhear your conversation, - the dark elf snatched them out of their thoughts, - I might know how to help you, - Maurice smiled, getting close to them, - There is going be a masquerade at the embassy soon, that would be your best chance to get in and get out unnoticed.

The woman looked at him dumbfounded.

- How do you know that? - Meltem asked.

- I'm on the guest list! - he smiled charmingly, - And I know a way for you to get on the guest list too. I'm willing to sell two invitations for the evening. The rest you'd need is a costume and a mask.

Mark didn't think long before reaching to his pockets.

- How much?

- A thousand for each, - the elf pulled the invitations from somewhere, waving them in front of the trio.

- Sure, - it was definitely a lot more that he would pay under normal circumstances, but he had no other safe choice to get there. He climbed off the lap, marching down to the cellar. Meltem half expected him to return with a sword to threaten Maurice into giving the invitations for free, but he instead brought two pouches of gold with him, - Are you going to count this? - he handed the pouches to the dunmer, getting the invitations in exchange.

- Let's say it's not good for a long-term friendship, - to that Meltem grunted: Mark is a bad negotiator, he does what's expected of him without trying to get a better deal for himself, and the dunmer could've easily gifted said invitations without any payment if it was the friendship he wanted, - I understand that you're unhappy with the deal, - Maurice said in an apologizing tone, noticing discontent in Meltem’s eyes, - It was difficult to get these. I appreciate that you didn't take them by force.

The woman’s facial expression changed, bitterness leaving her as she felt ashamed instead, allowing herself to be so obvious in her grudges. The elf seemed genuine, she would do exactly the same if she was in his shoes. Now that he put her to shame, she was actually glad Mark didn't resort to violence, for once happy with his straightforward approach when dealing with problems.

- So whom are you going to take to the party, Marki-Mark? - Visenya suddenly yelled from the bedroom.

- Mark, you are not going anywhere, - Meltem interjected, knowing damn well he's not going to listen to her nagging.

- I... don't actually know, - he answered, sounding lost, - Anyone who's got something to wear I guess.

- Can I go? - the girl in the back jumped at the thought, getting from the bed, - Can I go, pretty please?

The woman glanced at the elf.

- No, you can't, - Mark answered, - I... actually need some time to think, - with that he exited the house through the balcony.

...

Mark was sitting on the wooden floor, his back leaning on the railing, looking at the ships in the distance, thoughts racing in his mind, papers lying on the wooden floor with schematics for the Thalmor Embassy he purchased not so long ago from Thieves Guild. The route he has already planned seemed like a real deal: get in through the main entrance, blend in with the crowd, dance and drink to seem like a normal person, then sneak behind everyone's back into the secondary building. The emissary should keep all her files somewhere on the upper floor, probably in the archives. Though Meltem would certainly be against this plan.

There was another thing: he has to pick his companions. It's not a hard deal, since Visenya's essentially going to stay out of this affair. The girl is unpredictable and unstable, most suitable to stay away from this. She would be distracted inside, and that'd be enough to blow up the entire mission; she is a liability most of the times. And he can't just risk her.

His current plan consisted of two getting inside with invitations he bought from Maurice, third getting on their own: there is a cavern under the embassy, but he needs to do some reconnaissance before going in blind when the date's due.

Who'd go inside with invitations - Mark had no idea. And there was another matter of getting Aspen into this whole mess, because he ultimately didn't hear his agreement for this mission; Meltem is going to get her hands dirty anyways.

The woman has good knowledge of nobles and etiquette, so it shouldn't be a problem for her to navigate through the crowd inside. But she's quite peculiar, and getting her blended in would require a lot of work. On the other side he could just send her on her own, she's a master thief after all, but he had a doubt about sending her alone. It's not that she'd blow up this whole mission or anything, he just had a bad feeling about this. And should the trouble begin, she can't change her clothes and pretend to be an elf. She can fight well though and can definitely defend herself, however that will make the break in obvious for the emissary, and she would surely send a squad after them.

Aspen was a dark horse out of all three, Mark had no idea what the man's capable of. Sending him on his own would be a mistake at best, though he had a feeling the man'd be in place among the nobles. It also would probably be the best to use him as a distraction, to have him monitor the party on the inside. Yeah, they need to get him a proper dress for the masquerade... and actually ask if he wants to take part in this affair.

Mark himself could do it both ways, with and without invitation, though sneaking is not entirely his virtue when compared to Meltem. In the end would be just a matter of staying incognito during the party. He could probably go in together with Aspen, then leave the man to observe the situation in the main building, while he himself stays in the courtyard. Or the other way around. Should things go south, he could always use Aspen as a distraction, make him talk to the woman in charge and keep her from doing anything for as long as possible. Elf can't do this himself, he's too high profile for such interactions, he'd have to run to Meltem. There also will be the dark elf, Maurice, but they can't use him in any way.

Something like that? He has to ask his companions for their thoughts before committing to anything.

So I write a lot of monster stories. I lovehorror and I love love love monsters. I also write a lot of film bc that’s sortof my dream media.

One of my all time fav ocs is this ghosthunter (whos name rn is tba only bc I gave her that name in the first place bcI was jealous and wished id had it but now that im like ‘dang dude its been along time you HAVE to pick a name at SOME point’ im realizing that maybe the namesI gave characters bc I wished they were mine is like……… maybe a hint towardswhat names I want…… LOL so if I do end up picking this name ill have to ctrl Fall my scripts and notes for her to switch it out. it’s a v masc name.) ANYWAY we’ll call herGhosthunter. She’s the host of this this TV show where she finds and kills ghosts with herfriend, Maurice. However, bc of backstory reasons, she wants Ghost Powers soshe selfishly tricks Maurice into going into this rly dangerous haunted housewith her to provoke this monster that she thinks will give her powers. And itdoes!! BUT there’s a downside bc she walked into it’s trap and it’s going totry to eat her now. Her ghost powers look like this and she can mostly switchback and forth at will (ps, this is old art ;alskdj)

So anyway she has to travel around trying tolearn enough abt this creature to kill it while at the same time trying to keepher TV show on the air, salvage her relationship with Maurice, and deal withthe Backstory Reasons of why she felt she had to become a monster in thefirst place. It’s a TV series, it’s going to have 13 episodes (bc oooo scary 13 LOL), and my hope isthat it gets increasingly more intense and terrifying as it goes on!! I alsolove this bc it gives me this opportunity to explore things like fear of selfand also to design just like, as many monsters as possible for every episode. I’ve got thiscockroach doctor one a;lskd OH its good, he’s SO so scary I love him. (ps shesaroace!!)

Another oc im OBSESSED with is Marty. Thisone is a movie. (ive tried everything, I tried prose, I triedserialized episodes, nothing else rly seemed to fit. But that’s ok bc I need agood feature film script to throw around!!) Marty’s actually a demon!! But he’svery ordinary, very sweet, he’s just also, you know, a demon. He’s indirectlyresponsible for the death of this man, Quentin Green, who he had been secretlylow key stalking and really, really liked. So he possesses him an in attempt totry to keep him alive. It doesn’t work and Quentin dies and then it’s justMarty and this empty body. So he just….. Keeps it. (which is a questionabledecision of course.) BUT TWIST Quentin was an EXORCIST. And all his FRIENDS AREEXORCISTS. So Marty’s trying to keep this body in an attempt to have a life,but he’s also trying to hide from Quentin’s partner, Charlise, who is one of thebest exorcists there is. But it’s complicated bc he becomes friends withCharlise and feels like she’s one of the only people to ever really understandhim bc of some Backstory Reasons.

This one is less scary per se, but it issuper cool and fun and writing marty is like honestly a blast. this is him and charlise in the background!! again, oldish art ;laisd;asdlk

i dont have any super new art of my OCs rn bc ive been REAL focused on dn art for the past like almost year LOL but i am still writing them!!! ive got a few episodes of my ghost hunter one and im on my like 3rd-ish draft of my marty movie. ive got more OCs technically of course but most of them are for very short works. these two are closest to my heart!!

(i also feel like my version of A, Able, fallsunder this category, but I do plan on making them a little intro post one ofthese days, so just keep in mind that they’re here bless their stupid littleheart. Also, not rly related, but I decided to lift them and use them as wellfor another short horror story im writing. Campus Fires:The dog.

Campus fires are a series of short stories. set within the six month time skip. That occurs within my Novel. Some of them will be funny. Some of them will explore side characters. All in All this is mostly a Primer for my actual novel when it launches.

“So! Now that we’re all in Agreement.” The blonde haired, pasty skinned young man stood up and roared. His arms outstretched before him as if presiding before peasants and servants.

��Umm.” The curly haired, brown-skinned young man, raised his hand from the other side of the table. “I have an inquiry.”

A weary sigh left the blonde ones’ lips “About Nogi?”

“Why am I security? I’m the most skittish fucker here? I can barely stand cockroaches.” He protested.

A broad smile formed on the Blonde ones face as he pointed to the sheathed blade before him.

“Oh what the sword?” Nogi asked.

“Yes!” The blonde one nodded.

“Alvin I don’t actually know how to use that.” This was a lie. The young man did indeed know how to use it. He knew how to use it quite well. He was however, what one would call…unmotivated.

“It’s not like you’re going to be facing off against Musashi any time soon.” The young man to the right of Nogi responded. “Just pull it out, wave it around like you usually do. That ought to be enough to keep people in check.”

Nogi closed his eyes and winced.” There’s a penis joke I can’t be bothered to make in there…somewhere.”

Weighted sighs left the mouths of the young men around the table. Save Nogi of course.

“If you can’t use it then why do you have it?” The young man, arms folded, beside Alvin, folded his arms and leant back in his chair.

“WELL, Tom ASS. As most men over the age of fifty will tell you, it’s mine and I’ve had it a VERY long time. I’m not about to just give it up because I can’t use it.

“Do you always use insults to get your point across?” The one called Tõmas sighed.

“THAT!” Nogi held up a finger. A smile plastered across his face. “Was actually a penis joke. Plus an ass is a beast of burden so really, it’s your own fault if you take it as an insult and not a compliment.” Nogi laughed.

“Either way.” Alvin commanded. “Shit excuse. You’re still security. Moving on.”

“Wait, wait, wait!” Nogi shouted. He held his hands out in protest. “I’ve got a good reason.”

A sigh echoed beside Nogi. “Not this again.”

“Shut up Louis!” Nogi shouted as he turnt to his right.

“You use that fucking story for everything!” Louis groaned.

“What story?” Alvin asked.

“Don’t judge me Louis! It was sad and heart wrenching and beautiful. Exotic love in an exotic land.”

“So you’re admitting you enjoyed watching a Rottweiler fuck a Yorkie?” Louis asked.

Nogi almost fell back in his seat. He frantically waved his hands back and forth in denial. “I never said that. Don’t put words in my mouth man. If anything it’s like a bad car accident. It’s fucked up and somebody died, but damned if you can’t look away.”

“Wait someone died!?” Alvin asked.

“Necessary casualty. Plus I’m sure you can find another one like her if you look hard enough. Got to be a few stores that stock her around here.”

“What!?” Alvin shouted.

“That story is not true! You made it up with Maurice when you got drunk the other night.” Louis stated.

“It is true!” Nogi protested.” There’s still dog vomit in the dorms where—“

“Shut up! Shut up!” Alvin shouted.” Someone tell me what the FUCK you two are talking about?”

An excited smile crossed Nogis’ face as he readjusted himself and rubbed his hands together.”Ok! So!”

“Oh my god!” Louis exclaimed, as he covered his head with both hands and lay his head on the oval shaped table in front of him.

Nogis’ mind begun to travel back. It was a week ago. He remembered very clearly because, it was the first time he’d smelt fried chicken in months. His nose led him to the cafeteria. A frequent hidey hole of his. Although, he would deny that to death. On this day last week, Nogi was surprised to learn that somehow, after months of searching, someone had finally found raw meat. Raw chicken to be specific.

The oil it was being friend in smelt of grease and fat. A most unhealthy combination, prepared by chefs and staff who knew exactly what they were doing. After much pleading and careful manipulation. Nogi, or Nicolai as he’s known to TRUE friends, was able to acquire two pieces of succulent, juicy fried chicken.

How unfortunate for him, that he was so preoccupied with just getting the chicken, that he forgot condiments. Briskly! He ran inside to acquire both the ketchup and the mustard bottle. Only to be met with and eighty pound Rottweiler, drooling over his still hot chicken.

“Hey...Hey! You get away from that! You get!” Nogi shouted.

The dog became alerted and quickly snapped up the bigger of the two pieces on his plate.”Hey! You get back here you slobbery fuck!” Nogi shouted. He took off after the dog, but not before stopping to grab up the leg left on his plate.

Thus began a most comical chase. A massive black Rottweiler, chicken breast in its mouth. Being chased by an angry sword wielding young man, with a chicken leg in his mouth.

“Hold up!” Alvin interrupted. “I thought you said you had a problem waving the sword around?”

“No Tõmas said that about his penis. I just said I can’t use it.” Nogi nodded.

“I said no such thing!” Tõmas shouted, slamming his hands onto the table in anger.

“Enough.” Alvin pleaded, patting Tõmas on his rather bald head to calm him down.

Nogi continued to explain that in the rush of people, he had lost the dog. Not one to let things go easily, he began his search. The advantage he had, was that the dog was massive. It’d be borderline impossible, for anyone to miss a creature such as that. To top it off it stank of musk and dirt. The result of months and months of no owner to take care of it. Still, the dog had done well on its own. How else could it look so healthy.

It took all of fifteen minutes for Nogi to find it, but when he did, the sight he saw before him would be forever etched into his mind. The Rottweiler, chicken still between his jaws, was busy at work, pumping away at a Yorkshire terrier.

“I swear. It was like fuckin interracial porn for dogs.” Nogi shouted. His eyes were wide and his head shook slowly back and forth as he stared into the distance.

“What’s a Yorkshire terrier?” Alvin asked.

“Midget dog.” Louis groaned. His face still buried in the desk. “Really yappy, really tiny.”

“Oh!” Alvin exclaimed in realization. “Wait can a Rottweiler even have sex with a dog that size? Without killing it at least.”

“I’m sure there were similar questions asked about muscular men and petite women back in the day.” Nogi laughed.

“You’re aroused by this aren’t you?” Louis asked.

“Not at all.” Nogi shook his head.” This is all a process. It’s all me setting the record straight.”

Nogi continued. He explained that despite the Rottweiler sewing his oats, he wasn’t about to let the theft of his chicken, go unpunished. However in his approach of the dog, he was rather noisy. This caused the animal to take off mid coitus. As one would know in biology, whenever dogs mate, they will become stuck together. This is due to the males’ genitalia swelling while within the female.

What followed was yet another humorous chase. This time the Rottweiler, Yorkie still attached to his genitalia. Took off! Chased by an angry bespectacled young man, brandishing a Japanese sword.

“I don’t get it?” Alvin stated.” It’s been in the dogs’ mouth. The dog has been fucking another dog. WHY? On earth would you still want that piece of chicken?”

“It wasn’t about the damn chicken!” Nogi shouted as he slammed his fists onto the table. “It’s disrespectful! He stole my food then went home to fuck his girl? What kinda shit is that? How am I supposed to let that go?”

“You’re the higher life form?” Louis shrugged, finally raising his head from the desk.

“So that means I’m not supposed to hold grudges? That’d go against my very nature.” Nogi nodded with a smile.

The entire room was filled with sighs.” I’m angry I can understand that explanation.” Alvin groaned.

Nogi continued to explain that the chase took him towards the dorms. Where the Rottweiler ran into an open dorm room, in which the resident was in the process of changing.

“Why somebody would change with their door wide open is a mystery to me.” Nogi shrugged.

In fact the dorms’ resident did in fact have a reason. He had freshly come back from a jog and was about to throw on a numbered t-shirt, when the dogs burst in. The Rottweiler seemed to become agitated and started to bark at the half naked resident.

“Wait! How is he barking with chicken in his mouth?” Alvin asked.

“He dropped it,” Nogi said.

“So your grudge is strong enough to supersede the chicken and everything else?” Alvin asked.

An awkward silence fell over the room as Nogi mm’d aah’d and squinted his way toward a coherent response. “Ummmmm,yes?” Nogi shrugged.

Alvin proceeded to fold his arms and glare at Nogi “Once again. I’m angry that’s an acceptable answer.” He complained.

Nogi continued. The frightened resident scampered onto his dresser. Which! Mind you, didn’t actually stop the Rottweiler. Meanwhile the poor Yorkie yelped bloody murder. To defend himself the resident pulled from a nearby closet…A SEX DOLL.

“Wait!” Alvin interrupted.

“Please don’t make him explain that!” Louis pleaded.

“Why’d the guy pull out a sex doll?” Alvin asked.

“Are you honestly still trying to make sense of this story?” Tõmas asked Alvin.

“To defend himself.” Nogi answered with a smile.” Which I mean, I can’t blame the guy. He didn’t really have much options. All things considered, an anime blow up doll ain’t a bad weapon.”

Alvin made a little wince before he folded his arms. After paving up and down for a while, he stopped and said,” Ok! Continue.”

“Why!?” Louis shouted.

“I’m invested ok!? I have to know!” Alvin shouted back.

And so he did. Nogi continued to tell of how the resident grabbed the sex doll and began swinging at the agitated Rottweiler. However his aim was piss poor and he ended up hitting the poor, screeching Yorkie instead. At about the fifth swing the Rottweiler caught the doll. Deflating it until it was all too easy to tear to shreds.

“Where were you in all this?” Alvin asked.

“Outside,” Nogi responded.

“All of a sudden you’re not brave anymore?” Louis asked.

“Oh gee! Run in and attack an angry Rottweiler, attached to a scared Yorkie in a cramped dorm room. Fetching idea!” Nogi replied as he shook his head and glared at Louis.

“Can we wrap this up?” Alvin asked.” I’m getting scared to hear how much more this escalates.”

“Fine fine.” Nogi nodded.” So anyway. After tearing the doll to shreds, the Rottweiler and Yorkie took off out the dorm.”

“Oh come on!” Louis complained.” Where are they gonna go next? The hospital?”

“I don’t know if they did, but!” Nogi shouted, snapping his fingers as he did. “When I did find them again, they were under a tree canoodling. It was…so beautiful. So serene.”Nogi could begin to feel the sting of three intense glares baring down on him.

“How?...Is any of that? …A good excuse for not becoming head of security.” Alvin asked.

“Well one.” Nogi counted on his fingers.” Who chases a dog for fried chicken? It’s a dog!” He nodded. “Two, I hesitated to use my sword. That shows weakness. People need strength.” He counted his third finger.” Finally, when I saw him licking her little doggy vagina to soothe the pain…I cried. I wept like a baby! It was beautiful. It was…such a testament of love and marriage—“

“Wait marriage!?” Alvin asked.

“Well I mean…I’d like to think they’re married. I hate to think she went through all that for random street dick.” Nogi shrugged.

“Didn’t you say someone died?” Tõmas asked.

“Sex dolls are people too.”

“Ok stop! STOP!” Alvin shouted. Waving his hands back and forth in protest. “ If I believed ANY of that, it still wouldn’t disqualify you. You have a sword, the rest of us don’t! End of discussion.”

Nogi groaned and folded his arms. “ Ugh! Fine, but only if you call me by my proper name.”

Alvn looked at him like he was mad.” Dude…do you know how troublesome it is to say Nogueira every time?”

“Not Nogueira.” Nogi protested. “Nicolai.”

Alvin rolled his eyes and sighed. “Hell no!”

“Give me this one thing and I’ll do whatever you want.” Nogi pleaded.

Alvin put his hands on his waist and tapped his feet. He squinted in thought at Nogi for a few seconds before he pointed at him and said. “We’ll bring Gunther and Maurice in on it to vote.”

“On my name?”

“On your fucking position, you ass!” Alvin shouted.

“Fine.” Nogi nodded. He stood up and outstretched his hand to Alvin for a handshake. Alvin reciprocated. Breathing a sigh of relief, that he could FINALLY end the meeting in peace.
