1660 – Cardinal Francesco Maria de' Medici, was born in Florence, the son of Grand duke Ferdinando II of Tuscany and Vittoria Della Rovere (d.1711).

In 1683 he was appointed to governor of Siena, a position he maintained until his death. He was the grand prior of the Sovereign Order of Malta in Pisa; Abbot commendatario of S. Galgano, Siena; Abbot commendatario of S. Stefano, Carrara, 1675.

According to a family tradition was promoted to the cardinalate at a young age in 1686. He remained in Florence, in his villa of Lappeggi, devoting himself to a life not really religious, made of amusements and love affairs with men.

He resigned the cardinalate on June 19, 1709 and was named prince of Siena. He then was forced to marry in 1709 Eleonore Luisa Gonzaga, duchess of Guastalla, daughter of Vincenzo Gonzaga, in an attempt to save the dynasty, but they did not have children.

1746 – Jacques Charles (d.1823) was a French mathematician and inventor, best known for his work with the hydrogen balloon.

Jacques was the only child of his parents. Jacques' education consisted of basic arithmetic , and no science at all. Other than this almost nothing is known about his earlier years.

Late in life Jacques married a creole woman, Julie Françoise Bouchaud des Hérettes, who was 37 years younger than himself. Many historians believe that his marriage was a cover up for his homosexual relationship with the poet, Alphonse de Lamartine.

In 1785 Charles became a professor at the French Académie des Sciences without having any formal science education himself.

Without Charles's contributions, the Hindenburg would not have even existed, so that accident would not have occurred, and we wouldn't have the one-way valve, or at least until someone else came up for the idea after Charles did.

Most notably Jacques Charles is known for the Hydrogen balloon which he built with the Robert Brothers. Jacques originally got the idea for using hydrogen gas as a lifting agent after intensive study of Boyle's Law. Previous to the use of hydrogen gas, hot air was used to make balloons fly.

Charles also is known for the invention of the gas valve, which he used on his hydrogen balloons, the hydrometer, and the reflection goniometer. He improved the heilostat and the arometer. Charles also confirmed Benjamin Franklin's electrical experiments. Charles is also responsible for Charles's Law, but did not publish it. It was published by Joseph Gay-Lussac in 1802, and Joseph named it in Charles's honor, crediting an unpublished work by Jacques Charles.

Jacques Charles outlived his young wife, and later died himself April 7, 1823 in Paris.

1915 – Roland Barthes (d.1980), a French semanticist, symbolist, and philosopher, like André Gide and Marcel Proust, two of his favorite writers, was somewhat of an outsider. He was Protestant. (France is predominantly Catholic.) He was left-handed. (France is, of course, predominantly right-handed.) He was déclassé. (Barthes's father, a naval officer, died in the First World War, and his mother had to work as a bookbinder.) He was consumptive. (Barthes spent several years in sanatoria.) And he was expatriate. (Barthes spent the 1950s in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, working for cultural services.) He was also, like Proust, (if not like Gide, who saw himself as a pederast), a homosexual.

Barthes's critical writings are best understood in relation to this sexual marginality. Because Barthes sees homosexuality, and for that matter any transgressive and eccentric "perversion," as unclassifiable, he rejects the classification "inversion" as inaccurate—a notion that will come as a surprise to gays and lesbians who see themselves as "inverts."

Oddly enough, Barthes does not reject every gay male stereotype. Barthes rejects sexual inversion, but embraces "tricking" and "cruising," activities that he claims represent true sexual liberation. (Not that they did so for Barthes himself; his autobiographical texts suggest he had an unhappy love life.) Cruising, he writes, is "anti-natural, anti-repetition." It may be that Barthes is simply "protecting" his sexuality here (something he feels all writers do), or at least the macho ("phallocentric") part of his sexuality because whereas sexual inversion feminizes gay men, cruising for tricks is a rather manly (and purportedly desirable) thing to do.

Barthes sees tricking and cruising as desirable in another sense as well. The trick, he writes, "is homogenous to the amorous progression; it is a virtual love, deliberately stopped short on each side, by contract." Likewise, men cruise with "the invincible idea that one will find someone with whom to be in love." Some gays (who cruise for sex, not love) will find these descriptions unrealistic. Barthes, however, feels that sentimentality, in an age such as ours in which love doesn't make too much sense, is essentially—and even nonparadoxically—insignificant.

According to Barthes, "it is Western discourse as such" —discourse that marginalizes and stereotypes gays and lesbians—" that we must now try to break apart."

1946 – James F. Amos is a retired United States Marine Corps four-star general who served as the 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps. As a Naval Aviator, Amos commanded the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing during the Iraq War in 2003 and 2004. He served as the 31st Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. He is the first Marine Corps aviator to serve as commandant.

As Commandant, Amos opposed the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy regarding homosexuals openly serving in the U.S. military. After President Obama signed the legislation setting the conditions for repeal, Amos led the Department of Defense in carrying out the will of the nation's civilian leadership. In late November 2011, Amos stated that his opposition to gays openly serving in the military has proven unfounded and said that Marines have embraced the change, describing the repeal as a "non-event."

1947 – A New York appellate court overturns the sodomy conviction of a "man of education and culture" accused by a mentally retarded vagrant, thus showing class bias.

1958 – Eric Marcus, born in New York City, is an American non-fiction writer. His works are primarily of LGBT interest, including Breaking the Surface, the autobiography of gay Olympic diving champion Greg Louganis, which became a #1 New York Times Bestseller and Making History: The Struggle for Gay and Lesbian Equal Rights, 1945-1990, which won the Stonewall Book Award. Other topics he's addressed in his writing include suicide and pessimistic humor.

Marcus received his B.A. from Vassar College in 1980 where he majored in Urban Studies. He earned his Master's degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1984 and a Master's degree in real estate development in 2003, also from Columbia University. He was an associate producer for Good Morning America and CBS Morning News.

Eric Marcus is the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Senior Director for Loss and Bereavement Programs. He wrote his best-seller Why Suicide? in order to come to terms with his own father's suicide when Eric was twelve years old.

Other popular works include What If Someone I Know Is Gay? Answers to Questions about What It Means to be Gay and Lesbian, and The Male Couple's Guide: Finding a Man, Making a Home, Building a Life.

1970 – Craig Parker, born in Suva, Fiji, is an actor from New Zealand, known for his roles as Haldir in the films The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Two Towers (2002), Darken Rahl in the television series Legend of the Seeker, Stéphane Narcisse in the CW television series Reign, and Gaius Claudius Glaber in the television series Spartacus.He also serves as narrator for New Zealand documentaries. Parker starred in the TVNZ soap Shortland Street, as Guy Warner, a character that has made several return appearances, most recently involving a story where Guy ran off with his brother's wife, Toni, only to return months later as a drug addled loser who attempted to use his daughter to score drugs for him. It ultimately led to the death storyline of Toni Warner. He is the reigning champion of New Zealand's Celebrity Joker Poker.

Parker first publicly discussed being gay in an interview with New Zealand’s Sunday Herald back in 2008. Regarding his sexuality, the very private Parker told the reporter that as a gay man, he doesn’t care what people say about his sexuality and that:

It’s jut not an issue for me. I just don’t get why an actor would want to reveal their secrets, hopes and fears to a magazine or newspaper. I know what the magazine gets out of it, but not the person. If you are doing publicity to increase your self-confidence then you are really in trouble. It’s important to keep some privacy. Your friends and family are the people you reveal yourself to. They are the ones who should have real access to you.

1980 – James Ryan Clabots , best known as Jimmy Clabots, is an American physical therapist, actor, and screenwriter. In 2009 he became a male escort, and retired in 2012. Since 2014 he’s been working as a writer and physical therapist in Los Angeles.

In 2000 he became a model. In 2008 Clabots started his career as an actor in the comedy film Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild!. In 2011 he starred in Showtime's Gigolos, showing male escorts in Las Vegas, but left the show in 2012 when he retired from escorting.

Clabots is of Cuban and Spanish descent.

1964 – The first depiction of a same-sex relationship is found in an Egyptian tomb. Nyankh-khnum and Khnum-hotep are discovered buried together side by side. The wall art shows the two men kissing. They were ancient Egyptian royal servants. They shared the title of Overseer of the Manicurists in the Palace of King Nyuserre Ini, sixth pharaoh of the Fifth Dynasty, reigning during the second half of the 25th century BC. They were buried together at Saqqara and are listed as "royal confidants" in their joint tomb.

One boy in a house full of girls

Outnumbered.

“But mami” Bek whined

“Move along aquaman, you've got chores” Liv told

“But none of the girls are going!” Bek complained

“That's because they need to help us around the house, with your baby cousins and little brother, so that we can get things done. Now vamos mi azul” Isabela said ruffling her son’s light blonde hair that he got from his mami.

With a huff he left the house.

Liv could see where he was coming from, that feeling of being outnumbered was familiar to her too, she grew up with five older brothers and only one younger sister.

when you look at bek though it’s a far worse case of outnumbered. He has his younger brother Anthony, primo Migel and 7 tios. Gus, Felix, Bruno, Mariano, Donnovan, Camilo, and Antonio.

On the other hand though he has his great abuela Alma, his abuela Julieta, his mami and mama, Celeste, Elena, Bella, Camren, Avalyn, and Maria as his cousins, and then he has his tias: Pepa, Elena, Luisa, Mirabel, Dolores, Dulce, and Rosita.

Needless to say he's one of few boys in the house.

His tia Luisa though is expecting twins, so after his chores are done, he heads to tio Bruno in hopes that he'll have some more primos and no more primas.

Yes Bek loved his primas but he was tired of always braiding hair, and doing girly stuff like pedicures and spa days.

"Tio Bruno? Can I have a vision por favor?" Bek ran up asking the man.

"It depends on what it is Río," Bruno said as he walked with the younger boy toward his door.

"I wanna know if tia Luisa's babies will be boys," he said

"I'll do it, but you have to remember, I don't control what I see, I just see it." Bruno explained to the boy

"Ok tio." Bek said as he walked with Bruno up to his vision cave which now was only three flights of stairs to climb.

Minutes passed and Bruno's vision showed Luisa's babies healthy and safe.

"Please for the love of God tell me they're boys," Bek pleaded.

"Um…" Bruno hummed "Sorry Rio, they're niñas"

"You're kidding," Bek deadpanned

"Sorry little guy, but this family is full of niñas, trust me, I grew up with three women and I was the only boy. Besides, growing up with girls gives you a far better respect for them than some men in the encanto." Bruno told

"I'm going to the river to clear my mind," Bek said, walking out of the cave and using a small wave to glide downstairs.

He left the house with only a faint trace of water trailing his wave. And off he went heading to the river beyond the mountain's split.

It gets to be lunchtime, and all of the kids are gathered at the table, helping themselves to some arroz con pollo. Everyone but Bek, that is.

Julieta was keeping an eye on the kids while the adults headed off to do some quick chores. She noticed the empty spot between Elena and Celeste, knowing that's where Bek always sat, she became worried. Dolores was just outside doing laundry so Julieta went to the back door and asked Dolores.

"Lola, have you seen Bek, he should've been done with his chores by now. Plus he never misses a chance to talk to Celeste and Elena," Julieta asked.

"I haven't heard him for a few hours, but the last I heard he said he was going to the river. He didn't name which one so he could be anywhere." Dolores told.

"Great, when they finish their arroz con pollo I'll send Celeste and Elena to look for him, they act like triplets, if anyone can find him they will." Julieta told

"We were mentioned?" The two 8 year olds said peeking from around the blue skirt julieta wore.

"If the two of yoy are done eating, I need you to go find Bek, he said he was headed to the river a few hours ago but since then no one has seen or heard him. Go on and take your bow Elena, Star you can take your hunting knife," Julieta told the girls, since they were the eldest, they were taught to hunt for their meat, and how to defend themselves from an early age.

Elena and Celeste always hunted together, bringing home large elk, and a rather promising cut of bear meat when they were only young girls hunting with Felix, Mariano, and Donnovan. Their skills were impressive bit their gifts always helped them. Celeste could hide her and Elena in the shadows of night so that she could let Elena get a proper shot on their targets. And Elena being one to mimick any noise, call, or voice she heard, could mimick a mating call to get any type of meat.

Aside from their hunting skill, they also knew how to track anything. Which is why they were trusted with finding Bek.

About an hour after the girls had went out to find the boy, they came across a snake, and like a pair of girls would do, they killed it with a knife to the heart, and then used the long reptile to tie a bow around a tree, so they wouldn't get lost returning from the mariposa river.

Once the snakes was securely tied, they carried forward heading through the crack in the mountain by way of shadows. Bears lurk on the caverns so stealth was necessary to pass through safely. Unless you were Bek that is, he could create a tall enough wave to ride so as to not be scratched by the bears. And as they walked in shadow, they took note of the wet and muddy grass. Bek had surely been through here.

Once the river was in sight they could see a small figure skipping rocks.

"Bek! There you are," Elena called running towards him.

"Go away," Bek muttered stopping the pair in their tracks.

"Why, tia juli has been worried about you you've been gone for hours Bek." Celeste told bringing herself and Elena out of shadows

"Why should I go back when I'm always outnumbered. I'm one boy in a house full of girls, I never catch a break." Bek snapped forcefully skipping a rock across the vast width of the river.

"Because Bek, we love you. And I mean of course you're outnumbered but that doesn't mean anything. We love to hunt with you, and we love doing spa days with you." Elena told

"But what if I wanna play trucks, or fútbol then what I don't have anyone to play with me." Bek said

"Yes you do! If you'd ask us. We thought since you never asked you didn't wanna do that stuff. Now, do you wanna face off in fùtbol, or make a cool truck course in the garden." Celeste explained.

"Let's check our lines while we're up here and then we can build a truck course," Bek said

"That's our primito, I bet that line that we strung with chicken scraps has a big fish on it," Elena bet.

Nearly four hours had passed and isabela was worrying about the three. They had yet to return and the sun was setting.

"What if they're hurt?" Isabela asked

"Amor, drink your tea, I'm sure they'll be back soon." Liv told

"Sorry we were so late Elena found an ell and she couldn't resist getting a shot on it." Celeste told helping Bek pull the elk into the house while Elena walked in cleaning her arrow on her shirt hem

"Goodness, I should've known you three would've went on an impromptu hunt." Julieta told walking in to see a rather large elk that needed butchering.

Isabela immediately swarmed Bek showering him with kisses, Dolores and Luisa doing similarly to their daughters.

"Come on you two, let's go make a truck ramp in the garden," Bek called running back out the door.

Celeste followed and Elena handed over her bow telling the women that surrounded

"We talked to him, he was just in a silly little funk, he's fine now though, Hey wait for me!" She called running out the door as the many women smiled.

"Atleast he's back to normal again, he was really upset this morning I could tell he felt outnumbered," Liv told

"Well atleast the girls still love to play with him," Luisa told

HEART'S REDEMPTION - CHAPTER 36

*Warning: Adult Content*

Sam Asato can't stop shaking.

Ian Foley frowns every time he feels an intermittent shiver course through Sam and rubs his hand up and down the young man’s arm.

Sam sits leaning against Ian on the Walkers' puffy, outdated-looking couch, trying to stay awake while everyone discusses the latest upsetting turn of events.

"You sure you're okay?" he asks, as another shiver runs along my limbs.

"I'm fine," Sam says, though he heasr the fault in his voice, the weakened lines along which it threatens to break.

Usually, Sam does a pretty good job of keeping the worst of Asato's memories suppressed, the long stretches of unmarked time in the dark; the hunger; the fear that, this time, the woman who'd been my mother would let him die, forgotten in a hellish space over which she went on with her life as though Sam didn't exist.

The Walkers' basement had been just the thing to bring those memories out with a vengeance, add in the fact that Sam’s running on empty as far as demonic energy is concerned and he’s a bit of a wreck.

"I just need to...refuel," Sam says, giving Ian a slight smile that he hopes doesn't look as sad and desperate as it feels.

"As soon as I can get you alone, I'm all yours," he says, pressing his lips to Sam’s temple in a scratchy kiss.

They might have to talk about that beard.

"Who could have done this?" Jack asks, bringing Sam’s thoughts back to the matter at hand.

They're gathered in the Walkers' home, the smaller, private house situated at the back of the lodge, seated around a small stone hearth in which a fire crackles with eager orange flames.

It isn't a cold day but the warmth is comforting.

Maria also made coffee and tea, which sits on a tray on the big, polished wood coffee table that dominates the center of the half-circle formed by a pair of sofas and several chairs.

Everyone is present except Sofia, who remains with Elliot where he lays, still unconscious, in an upstairs room.

Maria shakes her head at Jack's question.

"I've got an answer, of sorts," she says, "but I don't like it."

After Toni Martinez inspected the tires and announced that the valve-stems had been severed, putting the tires beyond any hope of repair, Maria had called a towing company to send out at least one truck.

Then, Jack, who supposedly had the most sensitive nose, briefly Shifted and sniffed around in search of any evidence that someone else had been there but he'd come up with nothing, just the familiar smells of his family and of them.

"If there's no sign of a stranger, then I'm left to think... it had to be one of us," Maria says.

"Elliot?" Carlos suggests. "Before he attacked?"

He's sitting on the smaller sofa with Jack, while Toni occupies the spot beside Sam.

ass, Inez, and Maria have taken the chairs.

Maria shakes her head again.

"No. When I drove up with Sofie and 'Nez, y'all were already going at each other. I didn't notice the other vehicles but my tires were just fine."

"Who then? No one's been alone long enough to do something like that," Jack says.

"With the right tool, something like heavy-duty wire-cutters, it would only take a moment," Toni says.

Carlos sighs.

"If only that ghost had just told us who offed her instead of being all cryptic an' shit. I mean, would it kill a ghost to just come out and say something plainly for once?"

Jack looks at him, confusion pinching his even, dark brows.

"Maybe she didn't tell us who killed her but I think I have an idea who she is... or was," Maria says.

"Who?" Inez asks sharply.

"Raven Wheeler," Maria says.

Inez remains silent but her lips form a grim line.

"She said she'd been 'invited home,' or some such thing. Raven's the only one who'd fit with that and with being the right age and bear-folk, too."

"Who is she?" Ian asks.

"Our cousin's daughter," Inez answers, indicating Maria and herself. "Ran away when she was seventeen because she 'fell in love.' Problem was, the man she fell for was near twice her age and probably only liked her for her pretty face and her... well, you know."

Ian shifts uncomfortably beside Sam.

He's sensitive about the age difference between them, though Sam doesn't know why he should be.

Fourteen years isn't that much in the scheme of thing, and Samasa's memories span centuries.

‘Besides, he might be physically older but emotionally...? Maybe not so much.’

"And she'd never come back?" he prompts.

"Nope," Inez says. "Her mom—our aunt's daughter—told her if she left, she could never come home. Raven left anyway. When the romance ended though, she changed her mind. Her mom didn't."

"So... do you think it was her mom who invited her back, after all this time?" Toni asks.

"Unlikely," Maria answers. "Her mom died years ago."

"Who then? And why? Why now?"

"I think... I might know," Ian says. "I, uh, asked a friend of mine to look into your disappearance, Inez, before you turned up. He didn't find anything useful on that front but he did find... something else."

The Walkers listen without interrupting as Ian recites the information he got from his detective friend about the previous batches of untimely deaths, seven every forty-nine years.

"If it's happening again, then... maybe someone, whoever's behind this, called that girl home just to kill her. To get one more closer to seven. If so, then we're already up to five."

"That's ridiculous," Inez protests. "I remember the time you're talking about. It was an awful summer, all those fatal accidents. But that's all they were, accidents. Besides, we're a big family, a tree with many twisted and tangled limbs. Bad things happen. And it's not like no one died in the intervening years. Your friend is seeing patterns where they don't exist."

Toni raises a sharp brow.

"Seven strange deaths every seven-square years? I think that's more than coincidence."

Inez frowns but doesn't argue.

A noise above makes us look up, and they see Sofia and Elliot coming down the stairs.

Sofia pauses at the bottom, her eyes landing on Sam and her face going hard.

"What's that thing doing loose? I thought you wanted it locked up?" she says, addressing Maria.

"We sorted it out," Maria answers coolly, "and I said nothing about chains."

"Sorted what out? It's a devil in disguise and it attacked Elliot. It could be the thing behind the murders, for all we know." she says, her voice shrill.

"Sofie." Cass scolds. "He has a name and it's Sam. He and his friends weren't even here when the killings started. Don't be such a bitch."

Sofia crosses her arms and raises her chin in defiance.

"You're only taking their side because they use the stupid pronouns you like," she snaps. "They is plural, Cass. Live with it."

"Not anymore," Cass argues. "Language changes, bitch. If it didn't, you'd still be talking like Chaucer."

"I don't even know what that means," Sofia sneers.

"Typical."

"Girls," Maria interrupts, earning a scowl from Cass and a smirk from Sofia, who no doubt noted her mother's reflexive choice of words. "Enough, Elliot, how are you?" she asks, voice softening as she addresses the sandy-haired man at Sofia's back, who looks down at us with a confused, somewhat startled look.

A swath of bandages encircle his ribs and a smaller patch of gauze is taped to the side of his head.

"I'm fine, I guess," he says, brushing his chin-length hair back with a swipe of his hand. "A little sore, but... I don't remember anything. Sofia says I... got attacked?"

"Not quite," Inez says, stepping in.

Quickly, they recount for Elliot what happened but he remains perplexed.

"God. I don't remember any of that. We got back from the airport and then... I woke up upstairs. I didn't hurt anyone, did I?"

"No, thanks to Sam, you're the only one who got banged up," Maria says.

"Sam?" Elliot looks at him, understandably incredulous.

"Yes, apparently he's... What did you call it, Ian? A kind of Shifter?" Maria asks.

"I'm a demon-human hybrid," Sam says tiredly. "A dude name Karin played Dr. Frankenstein with an incubus and a boy and I'm the result. Nice to meet you."

Sam receives the expected dose of incredulous, curious stares and presses himself a little closer to Ian as another shiver convulses his body.

He wishes it would stop but he knows it won't until he gets some energy.

He hasn't felt this much like the helpless, loveless kid he once was since before he became something more.

Giving in to the exhaustion seeping all the way to his bones, Sam closes his eyes.

Ian sighs.

"How long until the tow-truck arrives?"

"Another hour, maybe. There's just the one and Jim's got a reputation for taking his sweet-ass time," Maria says.

"Alright. I'm gonna take Sam back to our room for a while."

He stands and pulls Sam with him.

"If we're not back when the truck gets here, send someone up."

The Walkers agree and Ian stands, pulling Sam with him.

"Come on, little devil," he says as we walk back to the lodge. "Let's get you refueled."

In their room, Sam collapse on the bed but Ian doesesn't follow right away.

Instead, he gets out his cell-phone and makes a call.

Sam decides that what he really wants is a bath, so he starts the water running and then comes back to sit on the bed and listens to Ian’s side of the conversation.

He speaks in a lower, gruffer voice than usual and Sam wonders what kind of guy his detective friend is.

"Hunter, sorry to keep bothering you. I.. Oh, okay. Dane, then."

He stops and clears his throat, going on in a more familiar, friendly tone.

"Uh... I got another favor to ask. Can you look into someone named Raven Wheeler? I think she's been murdered."

He gives a quick recap of what they learned about the unfortunate Raven.

"Yeah, just, you know, maybe she's got a friend or a roommate or something...... No, I know you're not Batman...... Just, anything you can find...... No, I know. I'm sorry... Yeah, that'd be great. And hey, if I make it home alive, I'll owe you big time... anything you want. Money, beer, chew toys... you name it...... You want what?...... Uh, no, it's cool. Okay, deal."

Ian disconnects and then stares at his phone, a weird, confused expression on his face.

"What did he want?" Sam asks.

Ian shrugs and sets the phone on top of the dresser.

"Riding lessons."

Ian sees Sam’s expression and clarifies, although it doesn't make any more sense.

Sam is not sure he really understands but he thinks he’s looking forward to meeting Ian's friends.

If you are looking to save a bit of money on plumbing repairs, here are a few DIY plumbing tips to help you solve minor, everyday problems.

LOCATE YOUR SHUT-OFFS Before attempting to tackle any plumbing project, familiarize yourself with where your shut-off valves are located. Knowing where your main shut-off valve is most important. This allows you to turn off the entire system in the event of an emergency. If your home has individual shut-offs for certain rooms or fixtures, it’s helpful to know where those are and what each one does as well.

INVEST IN THE RIGHT TOOLS If you plan on tackling your own plumbing projects, it’s a good idea to have a few tools on hand. A few essentials include:

Basin wrench Pipe wrench Propane torch Pipe tape Adjustable wrench Tubing cutter Plunger Drain snake TAKE CARE OF MINOR CLOGS WITHOUT CHEMICALS When you have a drain that is clearing slowly, don’t reach for a chemical drain cleaning product. Minutes, perhaps hours went by as the scenes continued to shift in front of you. Some scenes were consistent, such as Triton’s bedroom, the main hall or the back garden, while others, not so much.

After seeing Triton’s and Poseidon’s first meeting you haven’t made a peep. Choosing instead to listen carefully to the grand voice that controlled this plane or what was happening in the scene in front of you. You wanted to take in all that was happening.

Soon, perhaps too soon, the final scene appears. Just like where they had met, this final scene took place in Triton’s bedroom.

Triton, now 1 year old, was alone with Scylla as she attempted to teach him how to walk. Hoping to get him to walk a little bit before his father stopped by for the day.

“Come slowly to me, Master Triton.” Scylla coos out at the child. Shaking Triton’s favorite toy in the boy’s direction to get his attention. “Try to lift—“

“Scylla!”

Scylla is startled as suddenly Maria, a laundry maid and her friend, comes barreling through the door.

“Maria? What’s the matter?” Scylla asks the younger woman as she picks up Triton and makes her way over.

“Y-You need to hide! Lady Amphitrite caught wind of you spending time with Poseidon-n when you were taking care of Lord Triton and took it the wrong way. She’s on her way right now.” Maria frantically explains as she wipes the sweat off her brow. Instantaneous getting to work to hide Triton’s toys. Knowing that if Lady Amphitrite found such nice things she would get suspicious of Lord Poseidon’s feelings for Triton.

All of a sudden a long crashing noise rings out from outside, frantically Scylla runs to the window to look outside. It was Amphitrite. She didn’t have much time.

“Maria. Take Lord Triton and hide him under the clothes in your basket as you make your way to the Laundry room.” Scylla frantically explains as she hands Triton off to the younger woman.

“B-But what about you?”

“I can’t worry about myself right now. If she comes here in her current state of mind, even Triton won’t be protected from her wrath.” Scylla mumbles out, fear dripping in her veins as she pushes Maria out of the room. Making sure no one was near, she grabs the basket and, with Maria’s help, carefully covers Triton in the dirty sheets. “Please be safe, my Lord.”

“Be safe yourself, Scylla. Try not to anger Lady Amphitrite more than she already is.”

“I will try.”

And with that, Maria leaves. Running away from the scene as Scylla shuts the door to Triton’s room. Accepting her fate.

“Please, Lord Poseidon. Make it back in time. For Lord Triton’s sake—“

“Where is she?!” A booming screeching voice resounds from out in the hallway. One that even sent shivers up your spine as you watched on.

It only takes a couple of seconds for Amphitrite to find Scylla. Breaking down the door to Triton’s bedroom in the process. Her usual neat fiery red hair was a mess, tangled and astray in every which way. Her eyes were mad and furious, looking crazily at the nymph who kneeled on the ground before her.

“YOU.” Amphitrite booms out, furiously stomping her way over until she stands inches away from the Nymph. She scans the room, seeming to attempt to find something before turning to the guards, “Go find the Child.”

“Yes, My Lady.”

“M-My Lady. I beg of you, let me explain.” Scylla sputters out as she shakes in fear in front of her master. “Ah—“

Scylla quickly bites her lip to stop herself from screaming in pain as Amphitrite digs her heel into the back of Scylla’s hand.

“Explain what?” Amphitrite venomously spits out at the nymph.

“I-I was only trying to get Lord Poseidon to become closer with Lord Triton.”

“Trying to get them to become closer?” Amphitrite repeats through gritted teeth, digging her heel once more into Scylla’s hand before pacing away. “As if that asswipe would care about his own son. He doesn’t even look at his own wife. His beautiful gorgeous wi—“

Amphitrite’s rant comes to a screeching halt as Poseidon barges into the room. His eyes are cold and hard as he stares down his wife, his trusty trident clutched tightly in his fist. So tightly, you could even see his knuckles turning an unsightly white.

“Oh, if it isn’t Lord Poseidon. Here to save your whore?” Amphitrite bitterly spits out to her husband before laughing maniacally to herself as she tugs at her hair.

It was official, she had gone even more bad shit crazy than she already was.

“Enough. How many times have I told you to cut it out with that shit—“

“Poseidon!” Scylla shouts out as she makes her way to her feet and runs over to Poseidon. What in the world was she doing? Was she trying to anger Amphitrite?

“Maria. Maria has Triton.” You overhear Scylla murmur into Poseidon’s chest as she leans against the god. Poseidon seems to freeze a little and you understood why.

He either had to fight Amphitrite here, which could take a while, or go try to grab Triton before the guards find and take him.

“Poseidon, I love you. Please protect me.” Scylla shouts out as she pretends to weep. However, from where you and Poseidon were standing, you could see her mouth the words ‘Go’ and ‘leave’.

You feel your stomach drop. Scylla was putting up an act in front of Amphitrite so the attention would be on her. Giving Poseidon an excuse to leave and enough time to save Triton.

Poseidon seemed to know this as well as his grip tightened even more on his trident as he shook his head at the elder servant in front of him, “You fool.”

“We are caught. Do what you must.” Poseidon's voice booms out as he lowers his trident and walks away. Choosing not to even spare a second glance as he turns the corner.

“You…. YOU FUCKING COUG—“

As Amphitrite lungs at Scylla a blinding light over takes the room, officially ending the scene. The spirit of the mirror seemed to have done you a favor by sparing the gory and curse details that would happen only moments later.

Shaken up, you collapsed to the floor as you found yourself face to face with the mirror. You were back where you started.

“Lady (y/n)?” Startled out of your trance-like state, you turn to Scylla. The present day Scylla.

“S-Scylla I—“ You stutter out, scrambling to your feet. “I-I’m…”

“It’s fine.” Scylla states out with a sigh, seeming to already understand what you were trying to say. As she had already heard it many times before, “You don’t have to feel bad for—“

“Could I give you a hug?”

The elder woman pauses for a moment, “A hug?”

“A-Ah sorry. Is that disrespectful in any way? I just felt like you really needed a hug and…” You take a pause as you anxiously rub the back of your neck, “…I really need to give you one after seeing that.”

It’s silent for a moment as Scylla ponders your offer.

“…Fine.” Scylla sighs out as she massages her forehead. The wrinkles on her face smoothing slightly as she does so.

At Scylla's confirmation, you throw yourself into the sea monster’s arms. Being extra careful not to squash the Pomeranians that were attached to the front of her body as you do so.

Scylla lets out a small sigh before eventually wrapping her arms around you as well. What was she going to do with you?

She was old. Having been born around the same time Lord Poseidon and Zeus’ mother was born and she had seen many souls in her lifetime but…never like yours. It seemed normal when she first saw it, like any other human.

But, perhaps that’s what made it so special in the first place. For the simple fact that you were a normal human. Caring, empathy, weakness. Containing so many things higher beings are repulsed by.

Yet, you seemed to wear them with pride.

“What am I going to do with you, Lady (y/n)…” Scylla whispers lowly under her breath as she finally relaxes into your touch.

—.—.—.—.—

“Lord Poseidon. I just got the files from—“

“Put it over there.” Poseidon mutters out to his attendee, not even lifting his gaze from the paperwork he was working.

“Of course, sire.” The attendee, quick and quietly, places the papers down before exiting the room. Knowing not to disturb his lord longer than needed. As soon as a small thud of the door closing resounds, Poseidon’s pen stops and he finally lifts his head up.

He should be getting all this paperwork done in preparation for the upcoming cold season but he just couldn’t seem to focus.

What was it….

Poseidon usually wasn’t one to ponder on trivial things. After all, he was a god. If need be, all he had to do was say something and the problem would be taken care of swiftly. But, he couldn’t do that in this case.

Poseidon rubs his temple with a small grunt as he attempts to shake out the scene from last night out of his mind.

That blasted scene, again.

Shaking his head one last time, Poseidon stands up from his seat and walks over to the couch nearby. He needed to figure out what to do about you and, especially, Triton.

Foolish Brother.

If Zeus hadn’t egged Amphitrite on so much, he wouldn’t even be pondering this right now. He would simply just ignore the boy until those annoying feelings went away once more. But, he couldn’t do that with all those assasination attempts being made from Amphitrite.

Three Maids have already been caught trying to sneak weapons into the premises and Five more have been caught trying to poison your food. And that didn’t even begin to cover all the number of poisonous and deadly sea creatures that were sent into the area.

“What if our only Heir tried to eat her food, you blasted Woman,” Poseidon scoffed as he poured himself a glass of wine. He needed it after all, with the sun already setting and tons of paperwork still needing to get done, it was going to be a long night.

A loud knock suddenly comes at the door.

“Come in.”

“Hello, My Love.” Poseidon feels his eyebrow twitch in annoyance at Amphitrite’s sugary sweet tone. Great. It seemed another distraction had come knocking at his door.

“You should rest. Look at how tired you are.” Amphitrite coos out as she makes her way towards her husband, taking a seat on his lap before he could argue or shove her away. Gently and slowly, Amphitrite takes her fingers and traces Poseidon’s jaw line. “You're so tense. Let me help you relax.”

Poseidon grunts out in distaste as Amphitrite places a kiss on his throat. Slowly, beginning to place more as she goes on.

This woman…

Poseidon sighs out lightly as he shakes his head. Let her do as she pleases for now. If she causes a tantrum now, it will only cause more trouble later.

As Poseidon takes a particularly deep sigh this time, he accidentally catches a wift of Amphitrite’s perfume on her neck.

Jasmine and Sandalwood, He can’t help but note. Two very strong, sexy scents. Ones that even more solidified Amphitrite dominate and Sultry personality. Any other man would probably be drooling on the spot from such a scent but not Poseidon. Never Poseidon. To him, it only overwhelmed his senses so much that it was starting to give him a headache.

What a pain.

As Poseidon tries to slip deep in his thoughts to ignore the oncoming headache, his thoughts accidentally slip back to you. As if summoned, the warm scent of cedar wood and vanilla overtake his senses. The same exact scent he caught on you when you were leaning against his shoulder while he was carrying you yesterday.

Damn it. Poseidon grits his teeth. Why can’t he seem to get her out of his head? He definitely needed to investigate this more. For this wasn’t normal. Just hours prior, he was reimagining her ghost-like touch on his hand.

“Tch.” Poseidon lets out as he is broken from his thoughts. Instantly grabbing onto his wife’s hand that, while he was lost in dreamworld, had travelled down much further than he appreciated. “Enough.”

“Don’t lie, My Lord.” Amphitrite purrs out, as leans more into her husband, “I could feel how hard you were starting to get for—“

“Enough.” Poseidon repeats again, this time pushing Amphitrite off of him so that she falls to the floor in front of him. “You are foolish to think I don’t know what you are up to.”

“Am I not allowed to spend t—“

“I’ve already heard from the servants about how you’ve been drinking and consuming things to boost your fertility recently.” Poseidon reveals as he swirls the wine in his glass, “If you think I’m going to knock you up once again with a child, you are gravely mistaken.”

Taking his gaze away from the wine, he glares down at Amphitrite, whose mood has now greatly soured. Practically foaming at the mouth from anger.

“If you are going to have a pathetic temper tantrum then leave.” Poseidon orders out, closing his eyes as he decides she is not worth looking at.

It is only at the deafening sound of the door being slammed that he opens them again once more. Amphitrite was long gone, her only traces being the cracks left on the wall from the door and a lingering scent of Jasmine.

However, Poseidon couldn’t care less. She could throw all the tantrums she wants but he would never have sex with her. For the one, and only, mistake he ever admits to making was accidentally getting her pregnant.

And, he has no intentions of making that same mistake again.

Author Note: As I warned before, Poseidon scene is a little weird. Like Bro, pull yourself together. But at least now that the reader nows what is going on from Scylla so Plans and events will be in motion. A lil theory i have in my head about Scoutma....

In society theres the Virgin Maria/Maria the Whore complex... basically you view a female person as either a divine being (mother) or something below you (sex worker/prostitute). Its not very modern but its a very basic way to theorize stuff, especially if you come from a very pratriarchical society as mine.

Maybe we romantisize Scouts Ma and Spys relationship.

I mean Valve has given her only a face and that she barebacked spy 27 years ago and she had a bebe, nothing else nothing more. No name, no background, nada.

In my personal headcanon maybe things werent as rosy as tumblr feels...i mean we all ignore the age gap. She already had 7 kids, so unless something really fked up happened in her life, she would be at least 27-30 when they started their relationship, maybe more unless she had twins or was very fertile idk.

And Spy cant be older than 40-45,given that he is quite flexible/strong for his age. It paints a different picture now, doesnt it.

So lets say that he had Scout when he was 21 (im being generous), he cant be younger than 48. MommaScout should have been around 27-30 when they were dating. It might not seem like a huge deal, but a 21 y.o and a 27 y.o have much,much different view points in life/expectecions. Maybe she was older, noone knows.

Maybe she just wanted a pp appointment and oh well, shìt happens.

Maybe Spy wanted to be a dad to Scout but she was already married so he had to be extra sneaky about it.

Maybe she just yeeted him off her life because he had a very dangerous and unstable job and didn't want to give Scout fake hopes for a dad who will eventually get rekted.

Noone knows

summary: a maria hill character study encompassing her life from the moment of her birth, until the moment she disappears with the blip.

a/n: did you know that according to agents of shield canon, maria hill was named deputy director sometime before 2009 meaning she was twenty-six years old at a maximum? what a fucken badass.

Maria Alejandra Hill enters the world on April 4th, 1982 at 1:02am, her cries as shrill as the alarms that rang around in the background of the hospital room, the movement of her limbs as jerky and harried as those of the medical professionals rushing around the room.

Her mother, Catalina Elena Perez, dies that same morning just as the clock strikes 3:00am. She never gets to hold the daughter she died bringing into the world.

Maria’s father never lets her forget that she’s had blood, her mother’s blood, on her hands since the moment she took her very first breath.

Maria is so young the first time her father hits her, that she can’t remember what happened.

She’s never known a time where her father didn’t hurt her.

But she never questions what she did to deserve her father’s rage that first time, or any of the times after. She’d grown up knowing the truth better than she knew herself--she’d murdered her mother, the love of her father’s life.

Her father’s beatings are relentless, leaving marks only where no-one will ever see, and his verbal abuse is worse. And Maria grows up feeling like she truly deserves it, because she must be evil to have done what she did.

I present to you, the Michael Knight Manwhore Index!

This was shamelessly ripped off from inspired by Sara_merry’s Michael Knight Sex Project on LJ, which tragically appears to have been abandoned after the first 14 episodes. But having a) a ton of spare time on my hands due to the ongoing Coronapocalypse, b) a steadfast dedication to sitting around in my pajamas watching Knight Rider instead of cleaning the gutters or replacing my car’s valve cover gaskets and c) a burning need to know how accurate my estimate of Michael’s conquests was in my last trashy fanfic, I persevered.

Methodology: I assigned each prominent female guest character (and the occasional male and/or regular character) a probability of having gotten it on with Michael, based on my subjective interpretation of how much they flirted/made out/made plans for a romantic getaway/actually went on a romantic getaway. Episodes in which at least one character had a 50% or greater probability (including with characters who were talked about but not seen onscreen) were assigned a value of 1. Episodes with a 49% or lower probability were assigned a value of 0. Values were totaled to calculate each season’s MKMI number.

Lonnie - Don't seem to know each other very well, no signs of other than professional interest. Probability: 0%

Tanya - Some kind of working relationship as Michael Long, but she doesn't seem to recognize his voice as MK. Plus he was possibly still engaged to Stevie as ML.

T: "I can promise you a very rewarding... *partnership*." M: "Not this time."

Probability: 5% (as ML) 0% (as MK)

Maggie - She expresses regret at not going for him at the end, but also seems more interested in finding a father figure for her son. It's implied that Michael left town before anything could happen. He did say he'd come back and visit. Did he ever? Would Maggie be up for a fling even though she knows he can't settle down? Potentially but not necessarily.

Probability - 30%

s1e03 - Deadly Maneuvers

Robin - They keep things mostly professional during the investigation. Michael goes to his own hotel room. At the end, it looks like he and Devon are leaving together. Michael is wearing a different shirt in the last scene than in the one where he rescues Robin from the munitions range so it's unclear how much time has passed. Theoretically sexytimes could have transpired but there aren't really any strong suggestions that they have.

s1e04 - Good Day at White Rock

Sherry - "Keep driving." "For how long?" "Until one of us runs out of gas."

s1e05 - Slammin' Sammy's Stunt Show Spectacular

Lisa - She's definitely interested. And he's sticking around for another 3 weeks, so definitely some opportunity. He doesn't seem as flirtatious with her as he was with Sherry but it's definitely a possibility.

s1e06 - Just My Bill

Sabrina (offscreen) - Devon breaks Michael's date with her. Not enough info to draw any conclusions about whether it's a first and/or last date. A definite possibility.

Senator Maggie - That would have been subversive af, but alas, no.

Jane - Doesn't seem that into him at their first meeting. At their breakfast date he asks her how she slept, which presumably he'd know if he'd been there. She does go out to lunch with him and Devon at the end. Possible but not conclusive.

s1e07 - Not A Drop to Drink

Francesca - They have kind of a "channel the sexual tension into arguments" thing, but like Maggie in the pilot, she's probably looking more for somebody who can settle down. Another one where he talks at the end about coming back to visit but we don't know if he ever does. Maybe?

S1e08 - No Big Thing

The Unnamed 200-Mile Diversion Girl (offscreen) - I doubt he drove 200 miles out of his way just for coffee and friendly conversation.

Michael responds, "Yeah, that's a thought." Possibilities here.

Terri - He asks her to go dancing. She turns him down but finds him likable/trustworthy enough to let him give her a lift home. After he saves her life and her other driver threatens to quit she tells him she really likes him and hugs her but doesn't push it further than that. She tells him the next day that it was the first time she ever wanted to kiss a man (but that she had before anyway D: ). At the end they do go dancing (and she puts on a dress because heaven forbid a tough woman should ever fail to embrace conventional femininity immediately upon being found attractive by any halfway decent dude) and it's a reasonable assumption that they did more than just *dance* until dawn. I kind of want to roast Michael a little for not being more aghast about the fact that she's kissed dudes she didn't really want to and for encouraging her to give up her Tomboy Terri persona but it was a less enlightened era and at least he didn't hit on her when she was vulnerable which is more than a lot of dudes of his time (or this one, for that matter) would have done so I'll cut him some slack.

Flannery Roe - Things are off to a rocky start. She warms up to him a bit after he provides a comforting hug when she finds Connie's body but still gets a little shirty with him at the restaurant and turns down his offer of a ride home. She's antagonistic toward him when they meet again at the club. He saves her from the bad guys and for some reason she's back at the Foundation HQ at the end but they don't do any huggy-kissy stuff so odds are minimal.

Turns out she's another single mom, so her main preoccupation is getting her kid back, and she doesn't really care if she dicks Michael over in the process. He does get along well with her kid when they find her so that probably gets him a few points in her eyes. They hold hands after he beats all the bad guys in the western town and hug at the end but don't kiss. She's probably looking for a new dad for Natalie. He tells Natalie he hopes they'll see him again but nothing conclusive.

Rita Wilcox - Another one where there was possible interest but probably wasn't time for anything to happen. She spends half the episode either pissed off at him or faking a relationship with Garthe, and then they're busy trying to take out Goliath. It's unclear how much time has passed between that and the last scene but when she implies he should look her up if he's in LA, he doesn't mention that the Foundation's home base is in SoCal (or so it appears)? I don't think he's the type who wouldn't go for a woman he was interested in just because she'd hooked up with his evil twin (even if he was a little judgy when he found out she was shacking up with Garthe again), so maybe he's just not that into her.

Adrianne - She techno-roofies him and the way Randy sticks his head in the door and then guiltily ducks back out as she's leaning over him on the couch kind of suggests he's walking in on something he knows he shouldn't see. Still, Michael appears to be fully clothed when he wakes up in a ditch. Adrianne is totally a creepy douchebag and/or rapist (as we will see more of in Goliath Returns) but she was probably too preoccupied with stealing KITT to do anything in this ep.

Doesn't really express romantic interest in Michael and the hero of an 80s family hour tv series probably wouldn't have gotten it on with a married woman no matter how much of an abusive dick her husband was. They do kiss goodbye at the end and he tells her if she ever decides to leave the bayou, she knows where he'll be. If anything ever happens, it's probably in the distant future.

They kiss at the end but he tells her goodbye and leaves. No indication that they're going to see each other again.

Bianca - She seems to find him physically attractive, and maybe if she hadn't been so busy torturing him she would have tried to have a little fun with him. But considering what he suspects her of, he probably wouldn't have gone too far unless he absolutely had to.

Sheila - She acts jealous when he makes the date with Tyler but he seems more exasperated than romantically interested in her. They kiss before he goes into the warehouse but it's fairly short and chaste. At the end, she goes off with O'Malley.

s3e22 - Circus Knights

Bonnie: I have to admit, Devon, he looks fantastic. Devon: Yes, in spite of that ridiculous costume he's wearing. Bonnie: No, I'm talking about KITT!

Terri - They keep things professional at first, although when they're in the car together she asks if circus-folk camaraderie is the only reason he's interested in helping her. He says he's be lying if he said yes and presumably she reads it as him being interested romantically. After his near-murder in the ring they have a heart-to-heart talk and kiss. At the end he tells her to call him if she needs anything. *Anything?* Hmmm...

Tiger - She hits on him but he's not into it.

s4e01/02 - Knight of the Juggernaut

K: I'm asking you how I look. M: You look great, same as always!

Marta - They have some chemistry in their first meeting. He asks her out when they get back to her apartment. But (spoiler alert) she's part of the conspiracy to steal the cernium and sets him up to get murdered (twice). He cools it on the flirting after the first incident (understandably, since if he takes her story at face value she was assaulted and possibly worse) although he still acts protective of her. After she helps them get the bad guys she's hanging out with the Foundation crew at the end but we don't see any more romantic interaction.

Karen - She's doing her doctoral thesis on KITT and spending a lot of time with Michael in the progress. Judging by the way they're holding hands in their first scene and then making out at her apartment, there's obvious romantic interest. And she clearly has more than academic interest even after (spoiler alert) she gets held hostage by the bad guys so it's a reasonable assumption that if they weren't already banging they're going to at some point.

She's back in the semi with them at the end and Michael invites her on vacation with him. We don't see her answer but it's a safe bet it's a yes.

Elena - At first it's all business but they seem to be having fun dancing at the reception. They have a heart-to-heart talk in the parking lot until the hit man shows up. If he were a chick I'd say "extremely probable" except for the fact that Jonas was married with kids. Not that it stops some people, but it would most likely stop Michael.

"Ana-Lucia" - She keeps him up all night working on her car and he says he's going to come back after the race is over and demand equal time. Her response: "You won't have to demand." Peace Flag Ensemble - Noteland - pastoral jazz group citing Keith Jarrett and Mark Hollis as influences (We Are Busy Bodies)

Peace Flag Ensemble is an experimental jazz collective from scattered points across Saskatchewan. Their debut album, Noteland, is available June 18, 2021 on We Are Busy Bodies. Noteland is an exercise in pure collaboration. Built around Jon Neher’s piano improvisations, it is free flowing in form and meter. Each member contributed freely but also remained open to having their playing completely recontextualized. Travis Packer’s electric bass is tightly moored to the piano while Dalton Lam and Paul Gutheil, trumpet and saxophone respectively, drift between melodic passages and textural elements. The album was produced by ambient artist Michael Scott Dawson, who also contributes electronics, guitars, and field recordings to the collective. The result is a pastiche of improvisation, composition, and collage that cycles through quiet moments of imperfection and discomfort followed by peaceful resolutions. It draws from such influences as Keith Jarrett and Mark Hollis. “Peace Flag Ensemble is the sum of its parts. Everyone leaned into their own intuition and inspiration. I think that kept us from limiting possibilities.” Dawson shares. “Sometimes that means a saxophone is reduced to just the crackle of a spit valve, sometimes it’s blurred into pastoral ambiance, and sometimes… well, sometimes it’s just a saxophone.” The genesis of the project is unlikely to be included in a canon of debaucherous music myths. Neher and Dawson connected at a book club. Bonding over 70s ECM, contemporary minimalists, and Musique concrete the two began to discuss collaborating. Somewhere between reading Her Body and Other Stories by Carmen Maria Machado and Murakami’s Killing Commendatore, their ambitions morphed into a jazz collective. Reflecting on the outcome, Neher states “This record really allowed us to explore so many kinds of spontaneity while still crafting and polishing a finished work; that is a rare treat in improvised music.”

Not-So-Sweet Treat

Me? Posting content twice in one week? It's about as unlikely as you'd think, but I just finished a bunch of stuff so I had free time, and here we are.

So this idea came to me in a dream a while ago. I started to work on it, but then I got into the international science and engineering fair, so I had other things I needed to focus on. Anyway, the story. It's an RSS story about, well, I am not going to spoil it.

Maria climbed out of her Uber, slamming the blue car door as she stepped onto the sidewalk. She opened a text to Chaia and typed a puppy emoji, their code for a safe arrival. As she stumbled over the curb, Maria switched her phone off before she could hit send.

On a frosted glass window, burgundy letters spelled out “The Cinnamon Room.” At the door, Maria was greeted by two men in white aprons.

The red-haired man on the right stuck out his hand. “Gideon. Nice to meet you. This is Chase.” Gideon motioned to the black-haired man standing to his right.

“Maria. I hope I’m not too late for the class.” There’d been more traffic than Maria was expecting. She was about 6 minutes late.

“Actually,” Chase said, “you’re the first to show up.” He and Gideon cleared the doorway to allow Maria into the bakery. Cookies, danishes, rugelach, muffins, and pastries galore lined a display cabinet in front of the kitchen. To the right of the counter, a long hallway stretched to the back of the shop, connecting the front kitchen to the back ovens and pantry. Chase unlocked the gate to the back and showed Maria to a station in the kitchen.

“We need to grab some ingredients from the back. We will be right with you.” Chase started down the long hallway, and Gideon quickly followed suit.

Upon their return, Gideon and Chase were not carrying as many ingredients as Maria had anticipated. Each only carried a couple sticks of butter in one hand. What was in their other hands was more curious. Gideon and Chase both held a gas mask in their non-butter hand.

Maria, however, did not notice the masks. After seeing the butter, she simply turned around and began to wash her hands in preparation for the baking ahead. She didn’t notice as Gideon and Chase pulled the gas masks over their faces or when Gideon kicked a bright red switch under a cabinet. By the time she had finished washing her hands, Maria was too loopy to notice that Gideon and Chase were dragging her down the hall to a sealed closet.

Chase dragged Maria’s practically limp body onto a pile of hay while Gideon released the valve on a gas canister in the back corner of the room. “That should do it,” Gideon said, slamming the door as he exited the closet.

Back in the closet, Maria’s phone vibrated in her pocket as it received a text from Chaia. With an unsent message, it could only return a bubble with three dots. Moments later, the phone cried out a klezmer tune as Chaia called. Maria could not respond, so the phone just rang. And rang. And rang. And rang.

Thirty minutes later, Maria still hadn’t picked up the phone. Or answered Chaia’s texts. Or even read Chaia’s texts. Chaia dialed her wife’s number into her cell phone again. On speaker, the phone rang. After three unanswered rings, she shifted her attention to the landline on the other side of her computer; Maria always picked up by the third ring. Chaia called 911.

Victor’s headset beeped to indicate the incoming call. He clicked on the large “ANSWER CALL” button in the middle of his screen. “9-1-1, what is your emergency?”

“My wife took a pastry workshop at this bakery on Appleton and she isn’t answering her phone. I think something has happened. She has complex medical needs and-”

“Chaia, it’s Victor, take a deep breath with me.” Victor inhaled and exhaled forcefully, being sure to be loud enough for Chaia to hear through the phone. “This isn’t your cell number; where is your phone?”

“It’s right next to me. I’m still trying to reach Maria.” Chaia replied, a slight twinge of panic rising through her voice.

“Okay. I need you to do two things for me. First, I need the name of the bakery she went to.”

“The Cinnamon Room.”

“Okay. I am dispatching police, but they’re a bit busy with the protests downtown today. Do you have Kai’s number? He should be able to get down there pretty quickly and start to investigate.”

“Yes. I can call him.”

“Okay. Do you want me to stay on the line with you? They’ve just diverted all available units to crowd control at the protests. It might be a while to get the police.”

“I think I’ve got it from here. I’m heading down there right now. I’ll text with any updates.”

“Okay. I will keep you updated as well. Bye.” Victor terminates the call.

Five minutes later, Chaia’s phone buzzes with a text from Kai. “Frontman at the bakery says Maria went to grab a coffee. Heading down to Hazel Flower to check. Justin is staying at the ambo to monitor the door.”

Kai parked the ambulance block down the street from The Cinnamon Room. He turned to his partner, Justin, and told him, “If I am not back in 30 minutes, get backup.” He hopped out and walked down the street.

He strolled up to a red-haired man in a white apron. “Hi, I’m Kai. My friend is here for a pastry class and I need to drop off something for her. Her name is Maria Glassman.”

The red-haired man paid no attention to Kai. “She went out to get a coffee down the street.”

The coffee shop down the street was empty, so Kai headed back. This time, there was no one behind the counter when he arrived. Sitting amidst floured rolling pins were 2 gas masks. He texted Victor, “They’ve got gas masks. Send cops.”

The red-haired man appeared from down the hall. “I see you’ve come back,” he sneered. He planted a punch in Kai’s face and dragged Kai down the hall to the storeroom. He slumped Kai right next to Maria.

Chaia pulled up to the bakery, which was now surrounded by vehicles with flashing lights. She jumped out of her car and approached the first person in uniform she could find, which happened to be Justin. “Where’s my wife?” she asked.

Justin took a deep breath and made eye contact with Chaia. “You must be Chaia. My name is Justin. I work with Kai.” He offered Chaia his hand, which she begrudgingly shook. “The cops are still searching inside, but it may not be pretty. On the way over, Kai briefed me on your, uh, Maria’s situation. I think it prudent that you meet the other on-site EMS crew.” He led Chaia to the ambulance at the other end of the bakery facade. Motioning to the two paramedics leaning against the back of the ambulance, Justin said, “That’s Eaton and Sienna. I’ve filled them in.”

Chaia nodded at the pair. “Nice to meet you.”

Right then, a police officer ran out the door of the bakery. “I’ve found them! They’re gonna need oxygen.” The officer held the door as Justin, Sienna, and Eaton rushed in, bringing two stretchers and supplies into the bakery. Another officer grabbed Chaia’s arm to keep her outside.

“I need to see her!” Chaia cried, tears beginning to slide out of her eyes.

“You can see her when they bring her outside,” the officer told Chaia, shifting their hand from gripping Chaia’s forearm to holding her hand.

Kai was the first to be wheeled out of the bakery. He was semi-conscious. He could almost react to questions and occasionally twitch his face in response to the Oxygen cannula resting in his nostrils. He was brought out by only Eaton.

Justin and Sienna wheeled Maria out a minute later. Chaia couldn’t see the readings on the pulse oximeter but the ambu bag over Maria’s nose and mouth indicated that it couldn’t be good.

“Chaia, over here! Walk with me,” Justin called out.

Chaia joined him at her wife’s side.

“We’re about two to four minutes out from the hospital,” Justin told Chaia. “We’ve got two patients, two ambulances, and only three functional paramedics. Can you bag Maria until we get to the hospital?”

“You want me to be in charge of keeping my wife alive?”

“You are qualified and trained to do so.”

Chaia sniffled. “I--” “Chaia.” Justin locked eyes with Chaia.

She sighed. “Fine.” Chaia climbed into the back of the ambulance with Justin. Justin handed Chaia the blue bag mask and hopped out the back to run around to the driver's seat.

“You ready?” he asked.

“Yeah,” Chaia responded weakly. She took a deep breath as she squeezed the plastic bulb at the end of the bad mask and let it go to supplement her wife’s weak breaths.
