Whumpee's only semi-conscious when they're rescued. Caretaker tries desperately to hug them, but whumpee doesn't have energy to lift their arms; so caretaker half-drapes them across their chest in their lap to get to hold them.

How to Make Caretaker's Heart Sink
Something that made Caretaker's chest sink and feel heavy and painful
When Caretaker saw Whumpee for the first time after disappearing for a long time, he was very weak and even unconscious,
When Caretaker saw Whumpee lying still on his bed, too sick and tired to even open his eyes and make a sound,
When Caretaker saw Whumpee's weak hand, he moved around looking for Caretaker's hand because he didn't want to leave it,
When Caretaker saw Whumpee, who struggled because he was uncomfortable, he tried to remove the medical device while he was in a semi-conscious phase,
When Caretaker saw Whumpee, who had to be helped even just to drink,
When Caretaker saw Whumpee screaming in fear in the middle of the night,
When Caretaker saw Whumpee, who was uncomfortable while sleeping, moving restlessly in his delirium
When Caretaker saw Whumpee's blank stare,
When Caretaker bathing and putting clean clothes on Whumpee,
When Caretaker saw Whumpee crying silently,
When Caretaker saw Whumpee, who was confused about the things he had forgotten due to trauma,
When Caretaker heard Whumpee groan in pain while sleeping,
When Caretaker heard weak words from Whumpee's mouth, like "Hurt" "Water "Help me" "I can't breathe" "My body feels heavy" "My head feels spinning",
When Caretaker felt Whumpee's weak and thin body in her arms,
When Caretaker saw Whumpee's body, which was covered in bandages and bruises,
Is there anything else to add?

You know what I love?
That rough, sudden, strangled gasp a character makes when they wake up from being unconscious or dead.
Delicious whumperflies 🖤

After Whumpee goes unconscious from initially getting injured. When they come to, with a grimace they try to writhe or get away in response to the immediate pain.
Caretaker having to put a hand on Whumpee’s shoulder or leg, quieting them. Making sure they stay still and remain calm so they don’t make it worse for themselves.

Whump ABC #21 - Unconscious
Based on the results of this poll.
_
Caretaker looks at whumpee's pale face, their finally chest moving up and down in a steady and slowed rhythm. They hyperventilated only minutes ago, the pain too much to bear. But the exhaustion and pain caught up and whumpee collapsed into caretaker's arms, limp... almost like a doll.
They know whumpee isn't sleeping, despite the almost peaceful image betraying them of the severeness of the situation.
They know they need to get whumpee to a safer space as soon as possible, but right now, they can't risk it.
Caretaker knows it's risky, but they still speak to whumpee's unconscious body in front of them, hoping they don't hear the proclamations of utter fear and love for them. Whumpee's a light sleeper, so caretaker would never dare to do this if they slept.
Brushing a strand of hair away, they swallow hard and sigh. "As much as I like the thought of you getting some rest.. I really need you to wake up again."

Whumpee falls into/is thrown into a well. Caretaker jumps after them. Whumpee has hit their head and falling unconscious while Caretaker struggles to keep both of them afloat. The battle continues above them, on the ground. Caretaker can only hope their side wins, and does it quick, because they can't keep swimming forever. Not with now passed out Whumpee in their arms. The walls of the well are slippery, and there isn't enough space to get on their back and float. They're quietly begging Whumpee to wake up as blood runs down their face somewhere from under their hair.
Minutes pass, and Caretaker haven't got enough air in their lungs to yell for help. Their limbs are burning, water's spilling in their mouth. The sounds from above are fading, and Caretaker doesn't know if they're just dying or if the fight is over.
They can only see someone peeking into the well, but can't tell who it is, a friend or an enemy, because they only appear as a dark silhouette against the sun.

Mini Whump Prompt 101
"Come on whumpee- Wake up please! You promised me-", Caretaker's words were lost to a sob.
They clung to whumpee's shirt, planting their head against the unconscious person's chest, listening to whumpee's low breathing.

I don't know if this 100% falls under whump, or if it's just asexual somnophilia, but I love various types of guards being nonlethally taken down by sneaky figures in black. I'm going to describe two scenarios, one male and one female, and the male one is first because I know some of you are uncomfortable with female whumpees.
A dude's just strolling through the museum, thinking about his midnight lunch break, when there's a sudden sting in the side of his neck and he grabs at it only to come away with a red-fletched metal dart in his hand.*
He makes some kind of confused remark ("The Hell - ?") and grabs for his radio, but it slips out of fingers that suddenly feel fat and uncooperative. An arm slides around his waist as his knees give, and then the blast of euphoria hits his brain and everything feels great. He gapes at a blurry figure above him, heavy-eyed, as he starts to float.
"Everything is all right," a gentle voice tells him. "You can go to sleep."
He doesn't remember why anything would be wrong with that. He doesn't even remember to fight it. He slides off into a warm, happy dream as his entire body goes limp.
Another guard is patrolling some warehouse full of crates whose contents she knows nothing about when something clatters off to her left. She spins toward it, drawing her weapon, only to realize there's a canister spewing white smoke rolling toward her feet. She holds her breath as she turns to try and get out of range, then twitches and gasps at another noise from directly in front of her. It's another canister, and she's just taken a deep breath of something that burns slightly and smells like chemical roses.
She janks right and runs between the tall shelves, but her entire body feels heavy and odd. She realizes she forgot to try and hold her breath again. She can see the roses now, hovering all around like a magic thicket. Something hits her right side, and she realizes it's the shelf. Where'd the weapon go? She must have lost it in the thicket. The smell of roses is so strong and she feels so tired, suddenly. Something bumps into her knee. It's the floor. She fumbles at the shelving, but it's like she's being pulled toward the center of the earth, like gravity is so much stronger than before.
She slides over sideways. A hand catches her so she doesn't bang her head, lowering her to the floor. There's something dark above her, but she can't see it clearly.
"Thanks," she mumbles.
"You're welcome, dear. Shh, now." A hand strokes her hair. It feels lovely, lights up her whole head and spine like a rainbow with soft, sleepy tingling. She stretches her legs and shivers involuntarily, overpowered by the feeling, and as it fades, she fades with it. She's never slept as well as she will on that concrete floor tonight.
*There are no human trank darts irl. There's no consistent way to administer a correct dosage, and basically no substances knock a person all the way out for long without paralyzing breathing. With animals this is less of a concern because they don't have to be unconscious, just too groggy to resist being tagged, medicated, loaded into a truck, etc. And real trank darts are a very specific design that looks like an awkwardly long syringe to accommodate the rocker membrane that does the injection on contact. But I am willing to suspend disbelief on the fake metal movie dart with the little red feathers, because I like it. I'm willing to just make up fantasy meds.

“Whumpee?” They stood. Looking at the body tossed carelessly on the ground. It laid motionless, not even a hint of movement or life.
“What did you do to him?!”
Blurred words. Murmured phrases meant to appease them. They dodged as one of them tried to attack from behind, hitting them furiously with balled up fists.
The others had moved closer. Calling their name oh so deceptively. They weren’t going to let him go. Not this time. Never again. They’d promised the last time they’d been ripped away from Whumpee.
They flailed and kicked, desperate to escape the grasps of their captors, but five on one wasn’t a fair fight. With a broken sob, they panted, held by their waist- by the arms and legs, too.
With a heave, they crashed all their body weight into those hands. Collapsing to the floor with a wail as the pain in their ribs flared. They immediately squirmed to Whumpee. Begging them through numb lips to wake up. Move. Anything. Please.
There was a long silence, and then something covered them. They thrashed for a moment, before realizing it was a blanket.
One of the group members crouched down, a pained look in his eyes. “Caretaker, it’s okay. My name is Rescuer. I’m here to help both of you. He’s still alive, but he needs help quickly, okay?”
They shrank back, holding Whumpee as tightly as they could. They wanted to scream “NO”, to fight Rescuer off. But what if it was true? What if Whumpee really could be saved?
They couldn’t leave Whumpee. Not again. They’d promised. They’d promised.
“Hey. Caretaker. Can you look at me?”
Their eyes obeyed.
“Right over there is the ambulance. The EMT has his license if you want to look at it. You might recognize it. Do you remember your own license?“
License? EMT? They were going to take Whumpee away. They clutched their limp body tighter. But even as they did so, they remembered. They were one. They helped people. Their license was what made them real, right?
They nodded, almost timid as Rescuer retrieved the card. When they touched it, the plastic was cold. The mark on it made their skin feel rough. They hated that feeling. Caretaker was cold, too. They wanted to be warm again. Whumpee used to be warm, but now they were colder than Caretaker.
Rescuer was looking at them, concern in his eyes. “Can they put Whumpee in--”
“N-n-no,” Caretaker stuttered, eyes darting around. Everything seemed new. Changed. Why were they sitting down? Why was their hand cold?
“Do you want to go with Whumpee?”
With Whumpee. That was good. They wanted to be with Whumpee. They didn’t want to leave. They nodded, looking at their hand. What was that card...?
Rescuer gave them a smile. “Alright. I’m going to give the nice EMT his license back, okay?”
A few moments later, Rescuer returned. “Alright. You’re doing great, Caretaker. Can you take a deep breath for me? Good. Another? Good. Alright, you’re going to keep doing that as I pick you up. Then I’m going to pick up Whumpee. You’re still together, okay?”
Their head was spinning. They wanted Whumpee. They wanted to sleep, too, but Whumper was close. Whumper was always close. Their eyes blurred with tears as they felt themself laid on something soft. Immediately reaching for Whumpee, lying back once their friend was safe nestled in their arms. Their eyelids began to flutter.
“M-Mr. Rescuer?”
“Yes, Caretaker? I’m here.”
“Can- Can we go home now? I- I want to go home.”
Rescuer’s eyes softened, and he found himself hoping that Caretaker did not see the way he turned to quickly swipe at the two trails of moisture that slipped down his cheeks at their words. “Soon, darling. Soon, just rest for now, okay? I will watch over you.”
Caretaker had no strength to argue, nor to do anything more than stare up at him, begging him silently to please, please not let them down.

Whumptember day 2
“Let me do this for you.” Sacrifice | Guilt | Caretaker turned whumpee
Whumpee was finally safe.
They weren't uninjured, of course. Their body looked small in their hospital bed, and what little of their skin that wasn't bandaged was either a sickly pale hue or dark with bruising. They were hurt and frail, but they were healing. They were finally safe.
It had only cost Caretaker everything.
Whumper had given them 72 hours. Three days to handle their affairs, three days to say goodbye, three days of freedom before they had to fulfill their end of the deal. Today was their last day before becoming Whumpee’s replacement.
Caretaker had decided to spend that final day with Whumpee. They couldn’t think of anything they wanted more.
Caretaker reached for Whumpee’s limp hands. Whumpee didn’t react. Caretaker wanted to see their eyes one more time, but knew it was for the best that Whumpee wasn’t awake. They would ask Caretaker to stay.
“I’m sorry,” Caretaker whispered into the silent room, thumb rubbing against Whumpee’s knuckles. “I know you wouldn’t want this.” It’d been the only way to save Whumpee. The only reason they were safe now was because Caretaker had agreed to take their place, and Caretaker knew that trying to avoid their end of the bargain would only jeopardize that. They wouldn’t take that risk.
They lifted Whumpee's hand to their lips, pressing a feather-soft kiss into their fingers. "Let me do this for you."

cw: stranger whumpee and caretaker, restraints
a stranger caretaker who rescues an unconscious whumpee and wants to help them purely because of the goodness of their heart, but at the same time they feel intimidated by the whumpee and don't trust them, so they restrain them for when they wake up, just in case
and whumpee does indeed wake up, hurt, exhausted and terrified and the restraints certainly don't help them feel any safer, so now the caretaker has to convince them they have no ill intentions despite what they did

Caretaker was beside whumpee when they woke up. Caretaker immediately broke into tears, hugging and sobbing "You're awake! You're finally awake! I was so worried about you!"
Whumpee stiffened in their arms, mumbling "How... How long was I asleep?..."

I always liked the classic scene about Whumpee waking up in the hospital bed after being unconscious for a long time.
Whumpee must be confused about his current location and frightened by all the medical equipment attached to his body. Of course, Whumpee will struggle and try to remove it, whether it's the electrodes on his chest or the tube in his mouth. At least the ones that are easy for him to reach.
Then, Caretaker will hold Whumpee's hand and try to talk to him. Reassure him until Whumpee calms down and realizes that he is safe and understands that all the medical equipment that makes him uncomfortable is what he needs for now.
(Ah, I can get excited reading it. Is there anything you want to add?)

Febuwhump Day 21: Unresponsive
CW: experiment whump, unconsciousness whumpee, creepy whumper, needle mention
It’s happening again.
Whumper sighs in frustration and slaps whumpee’s face, gently at first, then more forcefully a second time. Nothing. Unresponsive, right at the critical juncture in the experiment. Whumper frowns and bends closer, examining his subject. Pale, damp skin. Shallow breathing. Weak pulse through the stethoscope. Not an ideal situation, especially when whumper is so close to success.
“You’re not being very helpful, whumpee.” Whumper steps back from the table, crossing his arms. “I told you to stay awake this time. But did you listen? No.” He pauses, observing whumpee for a moment in intense silence, then springs into action, readying various instruments and a syringe. The bright lights overhead wash out whumpee’s skin completely, making him look dead.
But he isn’t, and he won’t be, not while whumper needs him.
“And now, since you didn’t listen,” whumper says, plunging the syringe into whumpee’s chest, “we have to start the experiment all over again.”

Whumpee held captive in a cell and unconscious from the infected wound on their side. Whumper coming in and apathetically pouring alcohol/antiseptic on it. Whumpee screaming themselves awake, their body writhing from the agonizing pain.
OR
Whumpee slouched against a wall with a hand pressed to their wound, blood seeping through their fingers. Caretaker coming over with a rag, a bottle of antiseptic, and gauze. Apologizing to Whumpee but that it needs to be done. As the wound is disinfected, Whumpee throws their head back against the wall with a hoarse shout, losing consciousness as a single tear falls from beneath their lashes.

Whumptober #7
Trope of the day: “Can you hear me?”
_
The words in their head are getting louder and louder, nothing seems to stop them. It takes whumpee another few minutes to finally fully regain their consciousness, the voice getting louder. It sounds familiar, but they can't make out whose it is ... not yet.
“Can you hear me?”
Finally, crystal clear words as whumpee cracks one eye open, a sillhouette in front of them.
"Kid, it's me," the voice continues as they try to blink and grunt because of the sudden pain.
"Good, open your eyes, don't fall unconscious on me again, buddy." Whumpee finally realises it's caretaker and their body relaxes a bit at the sudden realisation.
“Can you hear me?”, they repeat and whumpee manages to move their had a little, a nod indicating that they finally do. "Great news ... this will hurt a little, but you have to stay awake, okay?"
