I'm dealing with my first genuinely very rude writer as a freelance editor, and it took me 5 days, but I'm finally able to process his comments as very, very funny instead of feeling angry about them. There's something petty and satisfying about a man being a total ass to you while also being completely wrong about the thing you're very good at, and you know you have the final say because the publisher also knows he's wrong and is also annoyed with him.

#am editing #he's quoting Strunk and White (not an official style guide and also outdated) at me to lecture me about commas #meanwhile he clearly doesnt realize i SAVED HIS ASS FROM DANGLING A MODIFIER #and tbc i do not care at all if writers understand what a modifier is or know what style guides to use #that's completely not their job #it's mine #what bothers me isn't that he's wrong; it's that he's very very snarky in a way i suspect is sexist #im going to ask the publisher to only share my initials with future authors because male PhDs specifically are often condescending to me #never quite to this level though #women professors also seem a lot more cognizant of my labor tbh #like every woman professor ive edited has put me in her acknowledgments/reached out privately to offer me a website testimonial #zero men have done this #actually now that im thinking about it #the difference is really striking #that's wild #wow #now im kinda mad again oops
