I've scrolled through many liberal zionist blogs on tumblr. I've been looking for these bloodthirsty demon Jews you describe. And I can't find them.
All I see is people working to end a 100 year cycle of violence. I know it will be a sad day for you when they succeed and the violence ends. So you promote the extremism that ensures further violence. You probably know on some level how conflict resolution works and you know it requires recognition of humanity. But you prefer violence so you avoid anything that resembles conflict resolution. You think it's both-sides nonsense and you want nothing to do it. You're prepared to suggest that every Palestinian should die on this hill while you watch.
When you can demonize a global minority like Israeli citizens, it helps you relax. It helps you make sense of a complex world. I understand. The reality that millions of Israelis dedicate their lives to ending this violence disturbs you. They must all be lying, right? They must secretly gather in basements and drink baby blood and so on. This is why you'll never read the opinions of any Isreali. You already know all you need to know about baby blood. So you don't need to actually read what they think. "OP speaks Hebrew! Block and stay safe!"
i can very easily imagine the type of person that sends an essay to a brown woman accusing her of wishing for "extremist" violence to continue forever. unfortunately you're not very good at it. i follow very closely the work of ofer kassif, an israeli who- surprise surprise, posts in hebrew. this is just one of the israelies IN israel whom i respect. i have supported numerous jewish voice for peace projects here in the states.
also, your anti semitism accusations are also falling flat, as my partner for three years is matrilneraily ashkenazi, and for 3 years i have had to defend him and jews at large to actual anti semites in my family.
you can accuse those of us who chant "from the river to the sea" of extremism. but that won't change the fact that we are currently LIVING in a two-state solution world, and it is FAILING. because israel does not exist to protect jews, it exists to protect america's colonial interests.
i was going to go on regarding how israel actively endangers every jew not in israel, how it destroyed ashkenazi culture (yiddish is now an endangered language), its extreme racism towards ethiopian jews, its contempt for mizrahi and sephardic jews (who were intentionally settled by the gaza aparthied wall to serve as a shield for white jews), but i know it will fall on deaf ears.
in the words of palestinian revolutionary, leila khalid, "to the million jews living here. if you wish to continue living here, you must live side-by-side with the arabs in peace and equality. if you cannot accept that, leave."
i will not respond to you anymore, but it is the palestinians whose humanity for the past 80 years have been denied. no one wishes for the death of israelis. only the death of a racist settlement: israel.

GABRIELA STANDS IN SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINE! 🇵🇸✊🏽💜
"When people are colonized, resistance is justified! GABRIELA Los Angeles stands in solidarity with Palestine and calls for an immediate end to the siege on Gaza!
"As anti-imperialists, we reject the US funded and trained settler state of Israel. Our fight for liberation goes hand in hand with the Palestinian people as we combat US-imperialism, wide-spread disinformation and escalating militarization of the Global South. We call on all Filipino women and the LGBTQ community to join the mass resistance in support of Palestine and fight for our collective liberation. As revolutionary fighter and Palestinian refugee Leila Khalid once said, “As long as the imperialists globalize the system, we globalize our struggle.”
"As an organization that organizes Filipino women and children in the National Democratic movement, we understand that our liberation will not come from the oppressive state of capitalism and US-imperialism. More than 1,030 Palestinian children in Gaza have been killed by Israeli forces since October 7, or about one child every 15 minutes, and more than one-third of the total death toll. Over 37,000 pregnant women will be forced to give birth without water, electricity, and medical supplies in Gaza because of a blockade by the Israeli government. Without access to clean water, food, basic medicines and vaccines, innocent women and newborn babies will continue to die."

🍂🥀🍂 Umm ul-Banin 🍂🥀🍂
Abdulkarim Paknia(1)
Translated by Mahboobeh Morshedian
🥀 Abstract 🥀
Fatima bint Hazam, or Umm ul-Banin (sa), was known for her noble lineage, upright morals, and enduring devotion toward the Ahlulbayt (pbbuta). After having been wed to Imam Ali (as) and raising his children after the death of his first wife, Lady Fatima (sa), she displayed excellence in her responsibilities as a wife and mother of the orphaned children.
She favored the Imam’s children over her own, and this was especially seen as she was more grieved upon the news of Imam Hussain’s (as) martyrdom than of the death of her own four sons who were martyred with him. It was after the tragedy of Karbala that Umm ul-Banin (sa) undertook the role of publicizing the event, conveying the message of the noble martyrs, and perpetuating the path of Imamate through her sermons, elegies, and lamentation.
🥀 A Descendant of the Brave 🥀
Fatima bint Hazam al-Kilabiyya (sa) notably known as Hazrat Umm ul-Banin or “mother of several sons” was a descendant of a valiant family. Her father Hazam, was the son of Khalid ibn Rabiah ibn Kilab. His respected mother, called Leila or Shamamah, came from the family of Sahl ibn Amir ibn Malik ibn Jafar ibn Kilab, all brave Arab forefathers well-known in the region of Hijaz. Also, Hazrat Umm ul-Banin (sa) was a descendant of Prophet Muhammad’s (S) great-grandfather, Abd Manaf, through some generations.(2)
In his book Maqatil-a-Talibin, Abul-Faraj Isfahani spoke of her.(3) According to historical accounts, Umm ul-Banin’s (sa) paternal and maternal uncles were both among the valiant Arabs in the pre- Islamic era. Historians praise them for their courageousness in the battlefields. Besides heroism, they were the chiefs and leaders of their tribe so much that the former Sultans succumbed to them.
Thus, the family of Hazrat Umm ul-Banin (sa) was pre-eminent among the noblemen of their time in terms of honor, valor, nobility, and hospitality. Umm ul-Banin (sa) inherited these lofty characteristics from her ancestors, integrated them with what she learned from the family of revelation, and passed them on to her children.
🥀 Her Marriage to the Commander of the Faithful (as)
After the Master of the Pious, Imam Ali, (as) had lost Hazrat Zahra (sa); that is, after the wretched of the time had martyred her, his young children needed a mother who would be affectionate towards them while simultaneously being his comforting wife. Hence, Imam Ali (as) approached his brother, Aqil, a genealogist in the Arab world, and asked, “From among the Arabs, choose a lady as my wife, someone who is a descendant of the brave Arabs and can bear me a magnanimous and valiant son.” After giving it some consideration, Aqil suggested that the Imam marry Umm ul-Banin Kilabiyyah (sa) because no Arab was found braver than her forefathers. Imam Ali (as) liked his brother’s idea and sent him to propose to her on his behalf.(4)
🥀 The Importance of a Noble Family
Taking into account the noble blood of the bride, the Imam taught his followers a moral lesson: “Good manners demonstrate a pure lineage and excellent family origin.”(5)
There is no doubt that taking familial nobility into account in marriage is necessary as the characteristics of forefathers and parents are very likely (and of course, not necessarily) to influence the children’s behavior. Of course, to the Imam, noble blood was not only essential for marriage, it is an essential quality in a ruler in order to run a state and government, which is no less important than family. He emphasized on associating with noble people in his letter to Malik Ashtar:
You should associate with decent (and virtuous) people who have been (raised) in noble families, have a good record, and live with a good reputation. It is also so with people who are of valor, munificence, and magnanimity because such people are the center of bounty and the branch of the tree of beneficence and virtue.(6)
🥀 The Auspicious Marriage
When Aqil proposed to Umm ul-Banin (sa) on Imam Ali’s (as) behalf, the Hizam family was overjoyed; they welcomed him with open arms, taking great pride in this proposal.(7) However, the father politely asked Aqil for some time to seek the opinions of both Umm ul-Banin (sa) and her mother, Shamamah, daughter of Suheil.
🥀 The Joyful Dream
When Umm ul-Banin’s (sa) father went to his wife and daughter to ask for their opinion, he listened to his daughter describing her last night’s dream to her mother:
"Oh mother! I dreamed that I was in a green luxuriant garden. There were flowing brooks and many fruits. The moon and stars were shining. I was staring at them, thinking about the greatness of creation, Allah’s creatures and the sky lying above without any pillar as well as the light of the moon and stars…I was lost in these thoughts when the moon came down from the sky and lay on my lap. It was glowing so brightly that I was dazzled. Completely stunned, I saw four other bright stars descend on my lap, too."
Upon hearing the true dream of his daughter, Hizam ibn Khalid was delighted and gave her the glad tidings, saying, “Surely Allah, the Blessed, the Almighty, has turned your dream into a reality. I give you the good news of felicity in both this world and the hereafter!” Then, he told his wife, “Do you find our daughter, Fatimah, qualified enough to be Imam Ali’s (as) wife? Know that his house is the house of revelation, prophethood, knowledge, wisdom, courtesy, and good manners. If you find your daughter deserving of this house, let’s agree with this blessed marriage!”
“Oh Hizam! By Allah, I trained her well and I have requested the Almighty Allah to make her extremely happy. You can give Imam Ali her hand in marriage,” Shamamah said.
"Consequently, they gave Aqil a positive response, their heart swelled with great pride. Thereby, the ties of marriage united Umm ul-Banin (sa) and Imam Ali (as) forever. From the very beginning of the marriage, Imam Ali found Fatima Kilabiyyah (sa), who was still young, a woman of complete wisdom, deep, firm faith, and lofty manners of high characteristics. He esteemed her and wholeheartedly strove to revere her."
Hazrat Umm ul-Banin (sa) was also a truly dutiful wife. In addition to training righteous children, she showed maximum loyalty to the Imam. After the martyrdom of Imam Ali (as), although she maintained her youth and extreme beauty, she did not remarry in respect to her great husband.(8)
🥀 Devotion to the Prophet’s (S) Household
Without doubt, Umm ul-Banin (sa) was a devoted lady, all too aware of the rights of the Prophet’s Household. She loved them sincerely and dedicated herself to their friendship. They also considered her of lofty status and worthy position.
Her devotion was especially witnessed during the Battle of Karbala. Upon the return of the caravan of Karbala to Medina, Umm ul-Banin (sa) asked Bashir,
“Oh Bashir! What news do you have about Aba Abdallah al-Hussain (as)?”
Bashir instead told her of the martyrdom of her four sons. She said,
“Oh Bashir! With such a bad news, you shocked and scared me to death. Tell me about Hussain (as). May my offspring and all what is under the blue sky be sacrificed for Aba Abdallah al-Hussain (as).”
Bashir replied,
“May Allah grant you a great reward for the tragedy that happened to our master, Imam Hussain (as).”(9)
These words of Umm ul-Banin (sa) demonstrate the power of her faith as well as her great adherence to Imam Hussain (as). Her statement, “If Imam Hussain (as) is alive, the martyrdom of all my four sons does not matter,” reveals the elevated level of her faith.(10)
Umm ul-Banin’s (sa) unaffected love for the Prophet’s (S) offspring and sacrifices of her children for Imam Hussain (as) produced an effect in this world as well. The Prophet’s Household did their best to respect and esteem Umm ul-Banin (sa) and her sons, not failing to express gratitude to them.
🥀 A Loving Mother to Lady Fatima al-Zahra’s (sa) Children
Umm ul-Banin (sa) tried to fill the gap left by the loss of a mother for the children of Hazrat Zahra (sa), particularly for the Prophet’s two sons – Imam Hasan (as) and Imam Hussain (as).
The Holy Prophet’s (S) offspring found their mother in this pious lady and felt the pain of loss of a mother reduce. Umm ul-Banin (sa) preferred the children of the Prophet’s (S) daughter, who were the very epitome of perfection, to her own and showed them more care and affection.
Knowing their greatness, Umm ul-Banin (sa) sought to be at their service; she did not deny them anything. The very day she moved in with Imam Ali’s (as) household, both Imam Hasan (as) and Imam Hussain (as) were sick and confined to bed. But as soon as the bride of Abu Talib’s (as) Household entered the house, she soothed and nurtured them like a kind mother.
It is written that when Umm ul-Banin (sa) married Imam Ali (as), she suggested that he call her ‘Umm ul-Banin,’ her nickname,11 instead of Fatima – her name at birth – so that Imam Hasan (as) and Imam Hussain (as) might not recall their mother by hearing the name ‘Fatima’. This prevented their bitter past from being stirred up and feeling the pain of being motherless.(12)
🥀 Raising Righteous Children
Umm ul-Banin (sa) gave birth to four sons: Abbas, Abdallah, Uthman, and Ja’far (pbbuta).13 The prominent one was Hazrat Abbas (ra), who was born on the 4th of Sha’ban, 26 A.H. in Medina.(14)
All these four young men trained by Umm ul-Banin (sa) were influenced by the lofty traits of their holy father in the first place; they also learned good manners, especially altruism from their virtuous mother. Each was an embodiment of virtues such as valor, decency, nobleness, and magnanimity.
When Imam Ali (as) was martyred, Umm ul-Banin’s (ra) oldest son – Abbas ibn Ali (ra) – was about 14 years old, with his other brothers younger than him. After the martyrdom of their holy father, their mother’s sacrifices and Imam Hasan (as) and Imam Hussain’s (as) guidance showed them the right way.
This self-sacrificing lady wholeheartedly devoted her youth and energy to training and raising the offspring of Imam Ali (as). As a loving and concerned mother, she was at their service. All Umm ul-Banin’s (sa) children were trained most appropriately. Finally, following the rightful Imam and with complete willingness, they sacrificed their lives for the exaltation of the truth.
🥀 Matchless Forbearance
The following are two instances of this angelic lady’s patience in hardships:
According to historians, once Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (as), put Abbas (ra) on his lap, folded up his sleeves, and started kissing his arms, weeping bitterly. Astounded by the scene, Umm ul-Banin (ra) asked the Imam,
“Why do you weep?”
Softly and sadly the Imam answered,
“I am looking at these two arms because they remind me of what will happen to them.”
“What will happen to them?” Umm ul-Banin (as) asked fearfully and hastily.
Imam Ali (as) sadly replied,
“They will be cut off from the forearm.”
These words hit her like a lightning and her heart sank. Then, she anxiously asked,
“Why?”
The Imam (as) informed her that the arms of her son will be cut off while defending his brother, protecting the Divine Shari‘ah, and the Prophet’s daughter (sa). Umm ul-Banin (sa) wept bitterly along with women around her.(15)
At this moment, Umm ul-Banin (sa) showed her great profound faith and forbearance. She also expressed gratitude to Allah that her son would display utmost loyalty and be sacrificed for the Prophet’s (S) son and daughter.
Likewise, her well-known words on hearing the news of martyrdom of all her four sons revealed her patience and tolerance and adorned the history of Karbala. While Bashir told the news of martyrdom of 34-year-old Abbas, 24-year-old Abdallah, 21-year-old Uthman, and 19-year-old Ja’far (pbbuta) to the mother, she showed patience and only asked about Imam Hussain (as).16 She said,
“Tell me about Hussain”
and when she received the news of Imam Hussain’s (as) martyrdom she said,
“All of the arteries of my heart are torn. May all of my children and whatever that exist under this azure heaven be sacrificed for the sake of Imam Hussain.”
🥀 Umm al-Banin (sa) and
Ashura Poems
Sayyid Muhsen Amin said about Umm al-Banin (sa),
“She was an eloquent poet, from a noble and brave family.”(17)
When women addressed her as Umm ul-Banin (sa) and expressed condolences to her, she composed the following lines:
“Oh women of Medina! Do not call me Umm ul-Banin and do not know me as the mother of the hunting lions anymore.
I had some sons, because of whom I was called Um al-Banin. But now there is no son left for me and I have lost all of them.
Yes, I had four hawks [sons], which were shot and whose jugular veins were cut.
The enemies slashed their pure bodies with their spears. My sons ended the day while they were on the ground with severed bodies.
If only I could know if it is true that they cut off the arms of my son, Abbas?”18
Another poem of hers reads as follows:
“Oh the one who saw (my dear son) Abbas (the son of Haidar al-Karrar) attacking like his father fighting with cowardly enemies! Oh the one who saw Ali’s other sons, each of which was like a hunting lion – fighting around him!
I was informed that my son Abbas was hit with a metal stick on his head while his arms had been already cut off. Woe to my lion cub (Abbas), who was hit with a metal stick on his head!
Oh my son, Abbas! If [your arms were not cut off] and you had a sword in your hand, no one would dare to approach you.”(19)
According to Imam al-Baqir (as), After the event of Karbala, whenever Umm ul-Banin (sa) heard of the martyrdom of her sons, particularly the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (as), she used to go to Baqi‘ cemetery in Medina, where she resided, and commemorated them while in deep grief for those godly men. The people of Medina joined her to listen to her words besides merely mourning their martyrdom. This was so touching that even Marwan – an enemy of the Prophet’s (S) Household – was moved to tears by Umm ul-Banin’s (sa) elegies and lamentation.
A main feature of Umm ul-Banin’s (sa) poems was her awareness of the then political events and relevant affairs. After the event of Karbala, she was able to convey the message of the oppressed and truth-seeking martyrs of Ashura to the future generations; she also could awaken the unaware people to the truth through her art of reciting elegies of the martyrs of Karbala.
🥀 Her extraordinary acts and spiritual status
Umm ul-Banin (sa) was also known for her spiritual status and extraordinary. The following refers to one of this mystic’s numerous miracles:
A Sterile Hanafi Couple become Fertile
In the city of Kut, Iraq, there was a mourning session held for Hazrat Umm ul-Banin (sa) in the house of Hajiyyah Um Abd-ul-Amir in Muharram 11th- 20th.
While these mourning sessions were being held, a Hanafi family moved to this neighborhood. Vazirah – an infertile woman– was a member of this family, who could not have a baby after 10 years of marriage and had lost all her hopes. Her neighbors told her, “Why don’t you invoke Umm al-Banin?” Vazirah answered, “It’s no use doing it since medicine could not do anything for me. I even used traditional medicines and fasted on the birthday of Zakariyya, but it was no use.”
“Whoever eats the ritual meal which is offered to commemorate the personality of Umm ul-Banin (sa) and considers her an intermediary between him and Allah, his prayer will be granted. Why don’t you do so? Allah may grant you a daughter and you can name her ‘Fatima’ after the blessed Umm ul-Banin (sa),” they said.
Looking at them silently and anxiously, Vazirah suddenly started to speak and anxiously told them, “Ok, but provided this is between you and me. My husband and family must not know anything about it.” They replied, “Alright, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow come to Hajiyyah’s house, where a mourning session is held, ending with Marthiya (an elegiac poem recited to commemorate the martyrdom or suffering) of Umm ul-Banin (sa).”
Filled with both fear and hope, Vazirah left home to Hajiyyah Um Abd-ul-Amir’s, veiling her face. She was distraught, sweating with shame. The nearer she got to the mourning session, the faster her heart beat. To her, the voice of the Marsiya reciter had a pleasant tune and pinned her hopes on getting rid of psychological pain. She entered the house, and took part in the mourning session.
When the Marsiya reciter finished with the elegies that triggered lamentation for Umm ul-Banin (sa), he prayed that the sick would be healed. Then a ritual meal was offered to commemorate the personality of Umm ul-Banin (sa) and the women present there asked for blessings by eating the food served. They were sitting around the table on which the ritual meal was served, praying that the sick would be healed and their requests granted. With her trembling hands, Vazirah took some food, got up, and left the house in tears. Hoping that they would be healed, her husband and Vazirah ate that food at night.
After about one month, Vazirah began to feel different; she suffered from dizziness and chest pain and she lost her appetite. She slept a lot and had difficulty going to the crowded places. She also struggled with housework and was especially feeling anxious.
Her husband noticed these changes and was concerned. They went to a doctor who assured them that those were symptoms of pregnancy. In order to ensure that it was true, the doctor recommended they undergo a laboratory test the next day. Upon hearing the news, they were delighted.
The next day, the couple found the test result positive. They went back home and performed prostration in gratitude to Allah. The news of her pregnancy spread among their relatives and their home was replete with joy. But she continued to hide the vow she made.
Months passed quickly and finally the ninth month came. In the early spring and just before the call to the Morning Prayer, she gave birth to a girl, delighting everybody. Vazirah said, “In order to be blessed, let’s name the baby Fatimah,” but her in-laws disagreed and said, “Name her Ayishah.” To resolve any disagreement, they named her Boshra.(20)
🥀 Demise
Eventually, the godly life of Umm ul-Banin (sa), which was replete with affection and struggle, came to an end about ten years after the event of Karbala. During her blessed life, she conveyed the message of the martyrs and perpetuated the path of Imamate; in other words, she completed her mission.
After the heartrending event of Karbala, she accomplished her political and social mission, namely keeping the eternal heroic event of Ashura alive in the best way possible. Umm ul-Banin (sa) passed away in 69 A.H. and was buried in Baqi‘ cemetery next to the Prophet’s (S) aunts Safiyyah and ‘Atikah, the four Shi‘a Infallible Imams,(21) and other luminaries of Islam.(22)
In his praise of Umm ul-Banin (sa), Sheikh Ahmad Dajili, a well- known Arab poet wrote:
Oh Umm al-Banin (sa)! What sublime characteristics you enjoy! Due to the sorrow that came upon you (because of) your faith, you will be remembered forever.
🥀 Conclusion
The dream Umm ul-Banin (sa) saw prior to Imam Ali’s proposal to her proved to be true. Indeed, she spent her life luxuriously in terms of reaping abundant blessings in this world that would guarantee her a successful afterlife. Best known for her deep love for Allah and the Ahlulbayt (pbbuta), she adopted the role of being a faithful wife and an affectionate mother.
In raising her own four sons, she passed her adoration for the Household (pbbuta) to them, ensuring that they display loyalty to the Chief of the Martyrs, Imam Hussain (as). After the tragedy of Karbala, through her undying grief and her talent in elegies, she persevered in keeping the message of Karbala alive.

After the tragedy of Karbala, through her undying grief and her talent in elegies, she persevered in keeping the message of Karbala alive.

no wonder dear khalid was fond of stories;
“After Khalid was born, I hoped everything would change. I had never seen a more devoted mother. Leila kissed his feet and sang to him as an infant. When he was older, she told him stories every night before he went to sleep. And Khalid loved her more than anything.”
Musa closed his eyes for a moment, and Shahrzad took a careful breath.
His mother told him stories at night.
wait that's an actual thing, parents telling their kids bedtime stories?

ok wait after u sent me that ask i have to know ur top books!!! dw if u don't feel like it but i would love to hear them 🌷
This is so sweet and considerate! Thank you Eva, you gave me 5 so I’ll try to keep it to that # as well 💖🐰 off the top of my head:
🌷 The Stormlight Archive series, especially the second book, Words of Radiance. Stormlight is like 4 books + 2 novellas right now, and is projected to be 10 books and ???novellas eventually. And on top of that each main book is 1000+ pages and while you can read Stormlight on its own, most of the other books by the author, Brandon Sanderson, are part of this larger fictional universe called the cosmere. Each series takes place on a different planet, and if you are invested in the whole cosmere, there’s Easter egg references to other series in other series. So like! While I rec these books often, most people understandably don’t take me up on it wgshshh 🤭 Sanderson’s non-Stormlight books are all MUCH shorter but also much more flawed imo. Like I wouldn’t count him among my favorite authors were it not for Stormlight. anyway I’m a die hard fantasy fan so the length didn’t deter me, and I picked these up because a friend told me the world building in these books was genuinely unique instead of the typical very lazy maps composed of like. Fantasy Russia and its hostile mysterious neighbors Fantasy General East Asia and Fantasy Africa lol. and she was right! The world building is exquisite and refreshing and almost every character is canonically of color. They live in a society with an eye color based caste system and it’s.., so hard to sum up this massive series with four main characters and a ridiculous(ly fun) amount of plot lines, so I’ll cut this short and say 1) the first book, The Way of Kings, is highly expository but the ending is so so worth it, and if you enjoy the ending you’ll find merit in continuing with the series 2) Words of Radiance is my favorite book so far partially because I haven’t read the newest, Rhythm of War, yet, and also because it’s the book with the most scenes that solidified Kaladin Stormblessed (one of the main characters) as one of my favorites of all time. Another one of the best things about this series is how Brandon Sanderson portrays mental health in very natural ways, and it makes Kaladin’s growth so incredibly soothing to follow (I MEAN. He has low points that sometimes hit too close to home, but it makes you root for him harder) he really is just. Truly my definition of a hero, if we wanna get cheesy about it, and I had to pick one solid example. I love him so much this isn’t even the tip of the iceberg as to why 😭!
🌷Jane Eyre. Silly frivolous teenaged girl that I am this book swept me off my feet when I first read it and I condone every problematic aspect of it❤️ (I DONT ofc but like! I love drama and being played like a fiddle by narratives and the book delivered on both fronts! And it couldn’t have without its unsavory plot twist soooo 😙💖) (the hate this book and especially one specific character gets is funny to me just because like. Hate for the former (imo) usually stems from people taking the book too seriously while simultaneously missing the point (JE and du Maurier’s Rebecca (highly influenced by the former) are oft considered loose Bluebeard retellings for a reasonnnn!) and hate for the latter is usually just like. Warranted and then taken over the top like... he’s just a fake funny little man you guys :( and the book would’ve been boring if he wasn’t so twisted and out of touch and passionate ): not to mention I do personally in a mean ish way think it’s funny how for some people this character is one of the worst examples of men they can imagine. Like good for Them! I don’t want them to have lower standards for horribleness in people But also omg 🤭 it just reminds me of how... irony of all ironies, I’m semi frequently told I’m too harsh on real life men and then when I love twisted ones in books (for being funny and entertaining and good solid characters) I like. get the most interesting side eyes (whether figurative or literal) bwjswnhshe anyway I have nothing against Austen, I definitely enjoy her, but from what I’ve read so far, I prefer the Brontës a lot more... I need adventure! Show me horror show me rot etc etc❤️ also I’m. A stupid sucker so the fact that the book was Charlotte Brontë’s attempt to write a plain looking lady protagonist and to make her praiseworthy and virtuous and worthy of spellbinding romance makes me... 💗💓💕
🌷Keturah and Lord Death — Martine Leavitt. I haven’t seen it officially stated anywhere but to me it’s p clear this book is a retelling of/highly inspired by Godfather Death (the Grimm tale) Very simple, predictable but effective plot, and the characters are just. So much fun. From my url you can probably tell I love stories in which women (or anyone but you know. Death and the Maiden is its own trope for a reason) outsmart/face off against death. If they also k*ss, when done right, I think that’s swell as well.
🌷A Thousand Splendid Suns — Khalid Hosseini. By far the heaviest book I will mention in this ask, and I don’t rec it willy nilly for that and a few other reasons. It’s a forever fave to me because I read it at the exact right time in my life, where I was like... noticing a ton of things irl and things at home were tumultuous, and when I saw very similar things unfold in this book while I was being silenced and made to feel crazy by the adults around me, it meant so much to me to see reality as I was experiencing it in real time reflected back at me via this novel. The context of the story is wildly different from my own life and the stakes the characters face are far higher, and it is if I remember right mostly a novel about the horrors of war, which isn’t something I pretend to have any firsthand experience with, but! It was legitimately cathartic to read when I read it, and it especially meant a lot to me at the time that the author was a grown man. Not to mention how my mother is not and never has been a reader, and somehow the one and only book I ever managed to get her to read was this. Hilariously she got mad at me for only (“only”) reading depressing things (there’s... a grain of truth to that but she doesn’t need to know! 🤫) but also... she was hooked I could tell! (I got all tmi explaining this one gag I’m so sorry)
🌷A Slight Trick of the Mind — Mitch Cullin. Retirement-era Holmes! Holmes as an old man! A sad old man who keeps bees!! It’s the novel the movie Mr. Holmes was based off of (haven’t seen it yet) and I was not expecting it to get me all sentimental like it did 🤨😪 but anyway it’s like. A prolonged character study and explores some of the most interesting (to me, anyway) parts of Holmes that are only lightly touched upon in canon, like his occasionally huge follies when navigating his few close relationships and how he copes with them afterwards, his fatigue at the random injustice of the world, how he’s often mistaken both by characters that surround him and people irl as a man without feelings, etc etc. like there’s no Dr. Watson or Mrs. Hudson in this book, and the people he interacts with are almost entirely original characters, but as I listened to the audiobook it barely occurred to me to miss Watson and Hudson (I know! 😦) and the author’s original characters interacted with Holmes so believably that I sometimes forgot they weren’t ever Doyle’s. Def recommend to any flexible Holmes fan that’s not a total stickler for canon (though you don’t actually have to know much about Holmes to read this book and enjoy it! 🐝)
🌷Sleepless — Sarah Vaughn + Leila del Luca. I began with the longest book, so let me end with the shortest. It’s a 2 volume long graphic novel series and that it’s so short is the only long standing, legitimate complaint I have of it! Gorgeous art, really effectively written romance, a dark skinned girl who gets to be the proactive, lively protagonist and stunning, pined after love interest at the same time, a cast of characters that is majority of color, the perfect %-age of drama and angst etc etc. if you can find it via your library or online or smth, you can knock it out in one sitting and leave the experience eternally altered in the funnest way 👁👄👁
Honorable mentions: The Botany of Desire — Michael Pollan, Troubling Love — Elena Ferrante, The Girl from the Garden — Parnaz Foroutan

Kawlah bint Al-Azwar - The black knight
Kawlah bint Al-Azwar (active during the 7th century) was a Muslim warrior woman who fought against the Byzantine and notably rescued female captives. She also healed the wounded when she was not fighting.
Before detailing Kawlah’s military career, it is important to note the presence of other fighting women in the Arab world. One of the most famous was Nusayba bint Ka’ab also known as Umm Umarah who fought alongside the Prophet Muhammad. She entered the Battle of Uhud in 625, according to some accounts alongside her mother. She staunchly defended the Prophet during the fight. When an enemy warrior boasted that he would kill Muhammad, she cut through the ranks and struck him, complaining that “the enemy of God had two suits of armor”. Some reports also state that she lost an arm and suffered eleven wounds during this battle. She participated in a total of six battles during her lifetime.
Umm Sulaim and her sister Umm Haram bint Milhan also fought at Uhud. Umm Sulaim carried a dagger and reportedly said: “O Messenger of Allah! I carry the dagger so if any disbeliever approaches me, I will spilt his stomach open”. Another woman Umm AlDhouda bint Mas’ud fought so valiantly during the Battle of the Khaybar that the Prophet gave her the same share of the spoils as the male warriors. Safiya, the Prophet’s aunt, killed a spy with a tent peg while her terrified male guard stood crying. During a battle, she killed a warrior and threw his severed head into the enemy camp.
Martial women kept appearing after the Prophet’s death. His wife Āʾishah bint Abī Bakr lead troop during the Battle of the Camel in 656 while his granddaughter Zaynab bint Ali fought during the Battle of Karbala in 680. Umm Hakim single-handedly killed several Byzantine soldiers during the battle of Marj al-Saffar in 634 while a group of women reportedly fought at the Battle of Yarmouk in 637. A woman named Ghazala was also known for defeating general Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf in a duel.
Kawlah fought during a conflict between the Byzantine Empire and the Rashidun Caliphate (established in 632) which wanted to expend its territory deep into Syria. She was the daughter of a chief of the Bani Assad tribe and her family was quick to convert to Islam. Her older brother Dhiraar bin Al-Azwar taught her to fight and she was also a poet. Dhiraar served under general Khalid Ibn Al Walid, who conquered Byzantine Syria between 634 and 638.
Dhiraar was taken prisoner during the Battle of Ajnadayn in 634.  Kawlah then rushed into the fray. Dressed as a male knight she “slashed the head of the Greeks”. Khalid and his troops watched her in awe, wondering who was this warrior dressed in black. After the battle, Khalid went to Kawlah and asked her who she was. She told him that she was one of the women following the army and that she fought because her brother was captured. Khalid ordered them to pursue the Byzantine army and Kawlah kept fighting to find her brother, ultimately freed him.
Kawlah was however captured in during another battle. She then realized that the Byzantine had attacked the women’s camp and taken several female captives. She decided to escape with the help of the other women. She reportedly said: “Do you accept these men as your masters? Are you willing for your children to be slaves? Where is your famed courage that has become the talk of the Arab tribes as well as the cities?”. One of the women then answered: “We are courageous and skillful as you describe. But in such cases a sword is quite useful and we were taken by surprise, unarmed”.
Kawlah then decided to use tent poles as weapons. The women fought their way to freedom, killing thirty Byzantine knights while Kawlah encouraged her with her verses. Khalid and his troops arrived to rescue the women. In the ensuing battle, Kawlah killed five knights including a leader that had insulted her.
In one of the next battles, Arab soldiers were overwhelmed by the Byzantines and many soldiers started to flee. Kawlah and the other women confronted the fugitives and she once again rose her sword to lead the counterattack.
Kawlah’s legacy lives on today. The first women military college in the United Arab Emirates was named after her and her name was also given to schools and associations.

For July, I set myself a challenge to only read books written by POC. I read some amazing novels, written by authors that I had never even heard of before.
I'm going to list 5 books that I've read recently, I encourage you to read them because they are truly amazing novels. I'll try to pick books that cover a range of genres:
▪ The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh (YA Fantasy)
Filled with beautiful prose, this book is a retelling of Arabian Nights. It follows Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan. Each night he takes a new bride only to have a silk cord wrapped around her throat come morning. When sixteen-year-old Shahrzad's dearest friend falls victim to Khalid, Shahrzad vows vengeance and volunteers to be his next bride. Shahrzad is determined not only to stay alive, but to end the caliph's reign of terror once and for all. This duology is now an all time new favourite of mine (look out for an elaborate review which I'll be posting soon). The writing style is stunning, the Arabian setting was atmospheric and mesmerising, the characters were original and refreshing. This duology is a pleasure to read, and if you were to only read one of the books mentioned on this list, I'd recommend it be this one.
▪Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman (Contemporary)
I'm actually not sure if this author is a POC (I've done research and I couldn't find anything regarding her ethnicity) however this book does follow a half-Japanese teen called Kiko Himura who grapples with social anxiety and her narcissist mother in the wake of a crushing rejection from art school in this debut novel. Kiko finds out she doesn’t get into Prism, at the same time her abusive uncle moves back in with her family. So when she receives an invitation from her childhood friend to leave her small town and tour art schools on the west coast, Kiko jumps at the opportunity in spite of the anxieties and fears that attempt to hold her back. And now that she is finally free to be her own person outside the constricting walls of her home life, Kiko learns life-changing truths about herself, her past, and how to be brave. This is a luminous, heartbreaking story of identity, family, and the beauty that emerges when we embrace our true selves. I stuggle a lot with anxiety, this book really helped me mentally and emotionally. I should mention there are a lot of trigger warnings including sexual abuse and anxiety.
▪ Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi (YA Fantasy)
Tomi Adeyemi is a Nigerian-American author, this is the first book in a African inspired young adult fantasy trilogy.
Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls. But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good. Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.
I love this book, I think it's well needed right now, with issues like police brutality etc. Children of Blood and Bone has quickly become a new favourite, and I can't wait for the final book in this trilogy.
▪ Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami (Magical Realism)
In Killing Commendatore, a thirty-something portrait painter in Tokyo is abandoned by his wife and finds himself holed up in the mountain home of a famous artist, Tomohiko Amada. When he discovers a previously unseen painting in the attic, he unintentionally opens a circle of mysterious circumstances. To close it, he must complete a journey that involves a mysterious ringing bell, a two-foot-high physical manifestation of an Idea, a dapper businessman who lives across the valley, a precocious thirteen-year-old girl, a Nazi assassination attempt during World War II in Vienna, a pit in the woods behind the artist’s home, and an underworld haunted by Double Metaphors. A tour de force of love and loneliness, war and art—as well as a loving homage to The Great Gatsby—Killing Commendatore is a stunning work of imagination from one of our greatest writers.
Killing Commendatore was atmospheric, and moody and gripping. Part of this is because the plot was excellently crafted. I had no idea where the story was heading, and just when I thought I did have an idea, Murakami threw a curveball and something completely bizarre happens (which I've heard is often the case with Murakami). I loved the motif of art in this novel. Art plays a key role in the plot and in the lead character's life. I enjoyed viewing the world through an artist's eyes.
▪ 10 Minutes and 38 Seconds in this Strange World by Elif Shafak (Literary Fiction)
*Before I get into the synopsis, I must say it's essential that you check the trigger warnings for this book before getting into it. I didn't, and it really affected me mentally because it covers a lot of sensitive topics.*
For Leila, each minute after her death brings a sensuous memory: the taste of spiced goat stew, sacrificed by her father to celebrate the long-awaited birth of a son; the sight of bubbling vats of lemon and sugar which the women use to wax their legs while the men attend mosque; the scent of cardamom coffee that Leila shares with a handsome student in the brothel where she works. Each memory, too, recalls the friends she made at each key moment in her life - friends who are now desperately trying to find her. . .
10 Minutes and 38 Seconds in This Strange World, is one of those books that rip your heart and make you sob uncontrollably, yet the message is so important that you have no choice but to push through and keep reading to the end. To say this book destroyed me is an understatement. I have never cried so much whilst reading a book (I'm not exaggerating). It crushed me. It dealt with so many difficult topics from child abuse, rape, self-harm, abuse towards transgender women etc.
Although this book destroyed me, I'd still recommend it. I think we owe it to everyone who suffered the same life as these characters, I think they deserve to be acknowledged.

You sound like you’re not too fond of Khalid. Any reason? Because he was against islam before he converted?
Khalid b. Walid’s victory at Uhud was his only very aggressive moment pre-Islam that I can think of. He was there at Khandaq (also known as, the Battle of Trench), but there was barely any fighting there and he didn’t do much. Those things don’t bother me. Khalid b. Walid was an extremely talented general, one that has become legendary and essential in detailing the expansion of the Rashidun Caliphate; however, he was not a good Muslim nor a good man. The word that comes to mind for Khalid is “bloodthirsty”. There are a few stories of Khalid attacking and killing people that didn’t need to be attacked. Upon entering Mecca, he killed a few people at the southern gate; the Prophet reprimanded him for this, as the conquest was supposed to be entirely bloodless. When the Prophet sent him as a tax collector alongside Abdur Rahman and others, Khalid led a charge on the innocent Muslims of Banu Jadhima and began killing them. It was likely unknown to the Prophet that Banu Jadhima had killed his uncle (Abdur Rahman’s father) years prior. Khalid tried to justify it by claiming he avenged Abdur Rahman, but Abdur Rahman wanted nothing to do with that terrible event. Upon hearing this, the Prophet prayed to God to not associate him with the actions of Khalid and Ali was sent to give blood money and reparations (and then some extra money). This situation was remedied, but Khalid b. Walid would show his bloodthirsty side again in another terrible episode not long after the Prophet passed.
Malik ibn Nuweira was a knight known for his generosity, as well as a distinguished poet and a friend of Muhammad. When he and his tribe did not send taxes to Medina, Abu Bakr sent Khalid with a punitive force. Malik had a very beautiful wife, and Khalid was aware of this. After Khalid plundered some of their property, Malik was brought before him. Even though the Medinan men of the army protested it, Khalid ordered Malik to be executed on accounts of apostasy. It was evident to everyone there that Malik was a Muslim and that he never betrayed the Ummah. After Malik was killed, Khalid then “married” Malik’s widow. This was an outrage to all. The companions were disgusted and outraged at Khalid’s transgressions; according to the Islamic law Khalid should have been executed for his crimes against Malik and Leila (his widow). Both Umar and Abu Qatada pleaded with the Caliph for some accountability, but Abu Bakr spared him because of his great martial ability. When Umar became Caliph, he dismissed Khalid immediately; however, he did not do anything more like execute him. Thanks for the question, I hope this helps some.

Carlos Rivera Dream Team Agency*
First Stream Latin is a compilation of the best new Latin songs, albums and videos recommended by the Billboard Latin editors. Check out this week’s picks below.
Carlos Rivera, Leyendas (Sony Music México)
Mexican Carlos Rivera is a young crooner with a teen spirit and a classic heart. In Leyendas, he strives to put all this together, duetting with older, iconic singers on some of their best-known tracks. From Roberto Carlos’ “Un Millón de Amigos” to José Luis Rodríguez’s “Agárrense de Las Manos,” Rivera traverses the Latin American songbook with the care of someone who grew up admiring, and finally emulating, the voices and personalities that defined Latin pop in the ’70s and ’80s. These are big arrangements, big strings, big voices, big productions, and it’s a reminder of another face of Latin music. We love that Rivera took the care to curate in songs by artists who are dead: The set includes Rocío Dúrcal’s  “Amor Eterno” and José José’s “Amor, Amor,” both recorded from existing tracks, of course. The most poignant inclusion is Armando Manzanero’s “Todavía,” which Rivera was actually able to record live with Manzanero during the pandemic, just a few months before his death. It’s a reminder that there’s no reason to wait to celebrate greatness.  — LEILA COBO

J Balvin & Maria Becerra, “Qué Más Pues?” (Sueños Globales/UMG Recordings)
J Balvin has reeled in Maria Becerra for his latest single, further proving that he not only has his eyes set on but supports fresh talent. Following his Khalid-assisted “Otra Noche Sin Ti,” “Que Mas Pues?” is a melodious reggaeton surrounded with catchy hooks left and right. At some point, Balvin even samples Aqua’s 90’s hit “Barbie Girl.” On the track, Balvin and the Argentine newcomer go back-and-forth on a relationship that didn’t work out and will never work out. A standout on this new bop is easily both of their harmonizing energy: Balvin with his distinct voice and Becerra with her dulcet vocals. Their magnetic chemistry comes out to play in the edgy music video. — JESSICA ROIZ
Reik & Maluma, “Perfecta” (Sony Music México)
Reik and Maluma have already proven to be an effective pairing. In 2018, they delivered the pop-urban anthem “Amigos Con Derechos,” which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Songs Airplay chart (Nov. 17, 2018). Now, three years later, Mexican pop trio and Colombian superstar Maluma have joined forces once again for “Perfecta,” a song that deftly fuses two worlds and sounds, and strikes the perfect balance between pop and reggaeton — with subtle elements of reggaeton and bachata. As ever, Reik and Maluma are ultra-romantic in these lyrics confessing their love for the girl of their dreams. “What can I do to make you understand that I’m blown away by you, that you’re perfect, that there’s no one else?” Reik’s Chuy Navarro sings. Maluma adds, “you’re the only one that compliments me, I have no doubts. Without me noticing, you cured the solitude that killed me. You gave me everything I needed.” The track was written by Reik (Chuy, Julio and Bibi) alongside Kevyn Cruz, Maluma, Andrés Marin and Germán Danilo. It was produced by Edgar Barrera, Sherman y Keityn. — GRISELDA FLORES
Denise Rosenthal, Todas Seremos Reinas (Universal Music Chile)
Fifteen songs to remind women that they are beautiful, perfect, fierce and strong is what brings Denise Rosenthal’s new album to life. Todas Seremos Reinas (We’ll All Be Queens) is an ode to womanhood from start to end. Rosenthal best explains it herself as “a narrative journey because everything has a reason.” Her previously released singles, such as “Tiene Sabor,” “Agua Segura” and “Dormir,” to name a few, easily set the tone for Todas Seremos Reina, an album with dance-pop-R&B fusions, injected with Rosenthal’s powerhouse vocals and empowering lyrics. “I know this isn’t the era of CDs, much less conceptual albums, but this is a dream come true because each detail is important and reflects part of who I am,” Rosenthal expressed on Instagram. “Thank you to all of the queens who continue to inspire and collaborate together, freely, building a new reality. We’ll all be queens because, deep down, we already are.” Collaborations on this album include Spanish queens Mala Rodriguez and Lola Indigo. — J.R.
Juanes, Origen (UMG Recordings)
Juanes returns to his Colombian rocker roots in Origen, and we couldn’t be happier. Beginning with a fast-paced rock ‘n’ roll version of Joe Arroyo’s “Rebelión,” Origen pays homage to the songs that shaped Juanes’ life and career. The set, produced by Juanes with Sebastian Krys and featuring no loops or samples, is a refreshing sonic journey that includes iconic tracks like Carlos Gardel’s “Volver” –reimagined as a bachata/tango—and unexpected gems like “Todo Hombre Es Una Historia,” originally recorded by Medellín rock band Kraken.  There are also English-language covers: Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing IN The Dark,” which morphed into a soft rock ballad, and “Could You Be Loved,” now a syncopated vamp set over a medley of guitars. Juanes has said that after experimenting with urban beats in his past two albums, Origen is his return to his true self. It is, and happily so.  — L.C.
Río Roma & Calibre 50, “Tu Eres Mi Amor” (Sony Music México)
Pop duo Río Roma has recruited norteño band Calibre 50 for their tuba- and accordion-powered love song “Tu Eres Mi Amor (You Are My Love).” The first single off Río Roma’s forthcoming EP, the song is a romantic ballad at its core with melancholic lyrics about falling in love. “Finding you changed my life. I would choose you over and over again, and if I could begin again, I’d only hope to find you sooner. You’re not my life, you’re my love because life passes by but what I feel doesn’t,” they sing in the chorus. “Tu Eres Mi Amor” drops as Río Roma celebrates 10 years in music, which will be marked with a special project where the brothers, José Luis Ortega Castro and Raúl Ortega Castro, revisit their regional Mexican roots and will feature additional collaborations within the genre. — G.F.
Yeison Jimenez, Quinto Elemento (UMG Recordings)
Jimenez’s six-track EP has him partnering with great regional Mexican composers like Horacio Palencia, singer and composer Jose Luis Ortega (Rio Roma), and composer/lyricist Ernesto de Jesus Velasco Moreno. It’s a perfect marriage of genres. In the first single “Tu Amante,” a story about a love affair between a man and a woman whose feelings and passions are forbidden, we hear and travel through the traditional acoustic Colombian guitar melodies accompanied by trumpets, that will take us directly to the south of Colombia, best known as “El Eje Cafetero.” And in the focus track, “No Te Voy a Perdonar,” Jiménez sings of regret accompanied by the unique blend of accordion and trumpets that “Música Popular” is known for. Jimenez describes this album as a “Masterpiece” that took over two years to record. — INGRID FAJARDO
Nicky Jam x El Alfa, “Pikete” (Codiscos)
After making fans on social media believe that there was beef between them, Nicky Jam unveiled his new single with Dominican star El Alfa. “Pikete,” slang for “swag,” is overall a less than three-minute song about a person who has attitude, flow and swagger. Fusing the best of both worlds (Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic), the Slow Mike-produced track marries reggaeton and dembow with electronic music and hints of Middle Eastern-influenced beats. It’s globally appealing and can easily become a summer anthem this year. — J.R.
Lenny Tavarez, KRACK (Warner Music Latina)
After leaving Puerto Rican duo Dylan and Lenny, Lenny Tavarez dropped his debut solo album, calling it his “first opportunity at life.” He’s also grateful for Warner Music Latina for giving him total creative liberty. “I decided to launch the album progressively, in four seasons, because I wanted fans to digest all the flavors, sounds and lyrics that it brings,” he tells Billboard. Home to 14 tracks, including “La Neta,” “A Cien” and focus track “Lo Tengo Todo,” the set includes collaborations with Nicky Jam, Rauw Alejandro, Zion & Lennox and Natanael Cano, to name a few. Though Tavarez has released the singles sporadically and in groups, the album has been nearly five years in the making. “My intention is to do different music without changing the genre,” he says. “Krack was created with a lot of sacrifices and stories of perseverance.” The set includes old-school reggaeton, perreo, corridos and more. Standout tracks, according to Tavarez, are “A Cien,” “Me Enamora,” “Kush” and “Enfermo de Riqueza.” — J.R.
ÄSTRA & Bunbury, “De La Piel Para Adentro” (Mercado Negro)
Los Angeles-based alt-rock duo ÄSTRA tapped Spanish rock icon Bunbury for their cathartic track “De La Piel Para Adentro (From the Skin to Inside).” Written and produced by ÄSTRA, the duo comprised of Guillermo Morales Vitola and Carlos Calvo, the explosive song is a reflection of the times with existential lyrics about a “world that seems to slip through our fingers,” said Bunbury. “Collaborating with ÄSTRA is a gift of great value. Musically, getting on the steamroller and being able to sing and write ‘From the Skin to Inside’ is to join a band in effervescence, roaring at the right moment to start the engine of a powerful machine,” he added. “De La Piel Para Adentro” was released alongside a music video that focuses on a consumer-driven society, directed by Sergio Abuja. — G.F.
Orquesta Failde, Joyas Inéditas (Gemma/The Orchard)
It takes guts to use the word “Joyas” (Gems, or Jewels) in an album title. But Cuba’s Orquesta Failde’s “Gems” are truly precious. This Cuban big band, led by flute player Ethiel Failde, plays vintage danzón, inspired by Failde’s ancestor Miguel Failde, known as the creator of the classic Cuban dance. The five-track EP features previously unreleased tracks penned by Miguel and produced by Ethiel with a sound that is achingly elegant and lovely. Joyas is intricate and seductive, with unexpected rhythmic changes that force the listener and the dancer to take notes. The only sung track is saved for the final “Rompiendo la Rutina,” featuring 90-year-old Omara Portuonda on vocals. It’s worth the wait. — L.C.
