nnn i know i’m already wrong because this post is about cql and not the novel, but i’m physically unable to un-franken the canon in my head, so i’d say I Kinda Disagree!

(well, i’m still *tilts head to the sides like a confused puppy* on the nmj vs jgy part, but that’s mostly because that one scene in the novel (the “well if you’re not planning the oath you have nothing to worry about!” one) kinda makes lxc seem like an almost willfully obtuse asshole... but i guess you could risk an interpretation that the denial he’s in isn’t particularly about the conflict between jgy and nmj, but rather the severity of nmj’s saber brain disease and the seriousness of his threats. i’m not really sure whether they really were close friends since they were young, or if their relationship is more based on the fact they’re both young sect leaders, but i could see lxc 1) getting used to nmj’s rough manner of being and just being unable to realize that it’s not normal, 2) being unable to realize what it’s like to be someone like jgy and have a both politically, physically and cultivation-wise powerful man furious at you. but I DIGRESS)

because... well, is he unaware? cql made this scene explicitly about wangxian, but it’s its own invention. lxc telling wwx about lwj’s scars only happened in the guanyin temple, and was completely different in tone; moreover, while in cql wwx asks breaches the topic himself, in the novel lxc says outright that “if you don’t remember [what happened in the cave in the burial mounds] then wangji wouldn’t tell you, and you wouldn’t ask him either”. (besides, i think in the original the xianqinged lwj got the lashes because he was... protecting wen qing? there was something like that) so the scenes are completely different in general.

but in the novel, the conversation in front of the gentian house takes place directly after them discussing the Evil Japanese Music in the library pavillion. it IS him realizing, and pointing out to wwx, that his and his father’s problems are similar AND when he asks wwx what should one do in such a situation, neither of them can find a definite answer. this is what this scene is about: it’s hard, it’s painfully hard, to even try to be impartial and follow the justice when the matter is concerning the person you love (xiyao theories aside, i think a friendship as long and close as lxc and jgy’s can be counted as love), especially when it’s not just “my friend drowned a bag full of puppies for sport”.

and i don’t think lxc “not knowing and not wanting to know” is just a case of him covering his ears going nananana i can’t hear you so you’re not here.

first, again: the... moral and righteous note of wgxn’s relationship is great, but it is another cql invention, because what lwj feels for wwx in the novel is, plainly speaking, rather obvious romantic attraction and you had to put something in the hole cutting that attraction out has created. hence, wangxian sharing ideals.

second: here, i think, once again we have to consider that lxc is a future sect leader. i don’t think lqr provided him his parents’ problem as a mediating exercise, so to speak. lwj doesn’t seem to know the exact details about their parents’ history, so i think it just wasn’t something the lan sect talked about (just like lwj’s own mess). besides, the lan may be considered a bunch of sticks in the mud doing nothing but following their 298754 stuffy rules, but in reality, they -- or at least those lans we know -- are very intense and rarely feel indifferent to something. say, a jiang, asked about whether something is good or bad, might go “ehhh i dunno, i mean... i feel it’s alright as long as you don’t overdo it?”, but a lan will give you a (detailed) list of pros and cons and THEN their own (detailed) opinion.

so: telling a future heir something like this could be a risk. this is his mother we’re talking about. if he concludes that she’s the one in the wrong and a criminal*, he might end up hating her, which is uh. kinda unfilial. but if he concludes that the lan sect/qingheng-jun treated her badly, he might end up detesting his sect -- how is he supposed to lead it, then? what if he becomes another lan yi, ruling with a fist full of qin strings? Not Optimal!

* i don’t think she killed a whole lan elder Just Because He Annoyed Her, but i feel this example wasn’t 100% serious, so

third: i also don’t think “i didn’t ask hehe :)” was the case here with jgy. again: if lxc asked, jgy would have to either reply or refuse to reply, and both could make him uncomfortable at best and put him in a politically inconvenient position at worst. jgy serves his father, he can’t just shit talk him, he can’t refuse his orders**, and besides, getting acknowledged was his, and his mother’s, goal in life. he’s essentially stuck, and while lxc isn’t aware of the full scope of the jgs experience, i think he just doesn’t want to make jgy even more uncomfortable than he already is. this is why he doesn’t ask. besides: he already showed that he trusted jgy not to be a sword-happy murderer for the fun of it, and he --

(reasonably. i don’t know why people in this fandom are so quick to judge lxc for going hey but context??, but i guess it’s like, fandoms of tragic stories often produce lots of happy-go-lucky AUs and vice versa; so a story that shows that nothing is purely black and purely white has a fandom that... sighs)

-- assumed jgy had reasons for the things he’s done. what would it look like, then, if he suddenly started asking questions? if he turned out to be distrustful, just like nmj?

** and what do you think would happen if jgy told lxc about the corpse workshop? lxc would know about the corpse workshop. he’d either have to do something about it, which could end VERY badly for jgy and the intersect relationship, OR to remain silent about people’s suffering.

like... i really don’t think lxc is just covering his ears for comfort, and in the end it comes back to bite him in the ass, hehehe. the story would be much poorer for that, because again: if the solution to everyone’s problem was “just talk”, it wouldn’t be a good story at all. jc and wwx’s problems don’t happen because they’re “bad at communication! just eat soup and hug, idiots!”, it’s because of the way they were raised, because of their traumas and different worldviews. and similarly, lxc isn’t a personification of a “don’t be willfully ignorant to stay comfy! take a stand!***” lesson, he’s a complex character with his own share of, yes, trauma, whose upbringing was... well, his upbringing. and we really can’t forget that lxc doesn’t have the freedom lwj has, cmon

*** or even a “take a stand! but not this one, this is a stupid stand! the other one!”

but again, the post was about cql, so. waves a hand. but Then cql, if you operate without the information from the novel, often becomes either simplified or just plain nonsensical, so...

That was exacty what I meant actually but I do have a few more povs if you want.

LQRs reaction to a demonic cultivator ascending, JGS and JGY reaction to the Yin Tiger Tally moving completely out of reach, WQ pondering the true requirements for ascension given WWX doesn't have a golden core yet ascended, WWX musing on Godhood and on his new followers both the good and the more disturbing worshipers.

Maybe LWJ protects the Wen Remnants because WWX asked him to in a dream and after he succeeds (13 years later) he ascends and is finally reunited with WWX.

Lan Qiren did not know what to think. Wei Wuxian, his most troublesome student, a demonic cultivator, had ascended. He’d ascended. How was that even possible? Were the Heavens blind? Why would they allow someone like Wei Wuxian to ascend?

From what Lan Qiren had thought, only those who are righteous and followed the correct path in life like the Lan clan’s founder, Lan An, would be worthy of ascending.

Either the qualifications for ascension were lower than he thought or Lan Qiren had been horribly mistaken about Wei Wuxian’s personality and motivations for using demonic cultivation. That last thought made Lan Qiren feel very uncomfortable.

He’d always been harsh on the boy and disregarded him, even - he ashamedly admitted - punishing him harsher and more frequently than others.

He’d thought he was in the right because of how Wei Wuxian was but…..

But if he was wrong then Lan Qiren owed him an apology.

Jin Guangshan wanted to scream out in frustration seeing Wei Wuxian ascend. That brat had the Stygian Tiger Seal on him - according to his spies - and now that he ascended, the Seal went with him.

He had had so many plans on bribing Wei Wuxian to his side or killing him when he refused - as well as stealing the Seal - and then taking over the cultivation world, lording over it as he was always meant to be.

Now those plans are ruined. He sighed. Hopefully that bastard son of his can finally prove his usefulness and give him countermeasures or he might retract his favor from him.

Jin Guangyao’s first thought upon seeing Wei Wuxian ascend was: Oh shit. I have to go make up new plans to help Father.

He knew his father wanted Wei Wuxian and the Seal and didn’t really care how he obtained both or either, just as long as no one traced it back to him. He sighed. This was going to be a big headache. But at least the plans on putting his father as Chief Cultivator were going smoothly. He could only imagine what his father would do to him if even this failed.

Wen Qing had still been in Yiling, making plans to relocate her family, when the news that Wei Wuxian had ascended had reached her.

Her first reaction was, That’s impossible.

Because it was, right? Wen Qing should know. She cut out his core, after all. But to think he was still able to ascend while he was a demonic cultivator made her wonder what the requirements were for ascending. Perhaps it’s an honest heart? Self-sacrificing tendencies? Or is it a sacrifice of some sorts? She paused. What if.....it was a trial? To test a person’s will? What Wei Wuxian had suffered was.....horrible. Could it have all been just a test from the Heavens?

If that was so, the Heavens really are cru---

“A’ Jie, we have to go! Some Jin were spotted nearby!”

Wen Qing gritted her teeth. Members of the branch families of Qishan, regardless of whether they were innocent or not, were captured and subsequently tortured to death by the Jin and sometimes the Nie. Because her family was all in Yiling, they were safe.......but only for now. They had to hurry and escape.

Wen Qing sent a quick prayer to Wei Wuxian, hoping for her family’s safety, and tucked the rest of her belongings in her qiankun pouch, remembering to wrap her arms in bandages to hide the needles she might need to paralyze any Jin that came close.

Wei Wuxian’s first thought when he landed in the Heavens was, What the fuck.

Then he looked around and looked taken aback and wary at the unfamiliar faces around him. Where the fuck am I?

“Hello.” A rather stoic-faced man greeted.

“Hello.” Wei Wuxian parroted back. The person in front of him didn’t seem to be a threat so he felt a little tension loosen from his shoulders. “Um, Xiansheng? I’m afraid I don’t know where I am?”

“You have just ascended.” The man replied, throwing Wei Wuxian aback.

“Are you pulling my leg?” Wei Wuxian asked. “How is that even possible! I don’t even have---” He swallowed. I don’t even have a core.

“I do not lie. Come, we are wasting time. We must get you washed up and dressed for the induction ceremony.” Seeing Wei Wuxian still frozen, the man sighed, signalled for some people to pick Wei Wuxian up and dragged the struggling man to some quarters.

After absentmindedly washing, drying and changing himself, Wei Wuxian noticed some differences in his body. He wasn’t....cold or hurting anymore. And - he touched his back - he could feel his back! After having his muscles and nerves shredded by Zidian, he didn’t think he’d ever be able to sense touch on his back or even move without pain! But now he can!

He heard the urging of some people and grumbled.

“You will become a god of demonic cultivation.” Was the first thing he heard when he stepped out of the room.

Wei Wuxian choked. “Excuse me?!”

“I said what I said. Now then, if you would please concentrate, you should be able to hear the prayers of the people below.”

Wei Wuxian felt like everything was moving a little too fast for him, but nevertheless complied. Immediately after, a flood of prayers hit him at full force.

“Wei Wuxian!” That was Jiang Cheng! “….Have some fun up there.”

“A’ Xian, do be well. Shijie isn’t there to take care of you so do be well.” Wei Wuxian refused to cry.

“Wei-Xiong! I hope there’s someone up there to supply you with you know what *winks*”

How does someone even wink in their prayers? Wei Wuxian thought amusedly.

“Wei Ying.” That was Lan Zhan. “Wei Ying, I will—be well.”

Ah, Lan Zhan. Always concise even in your thoughts.

Wei Wuxian was a little teary. As much as he was glad to not be a part of the cultivation world considering all the rumors, he did regret leaving behind those that cared for him.

That thought was much more cemented upon hearing…….

“Ah, Lord Wei, the pinnacle of evil, the role model of all demonic cultivators!” Wei Wuxian’s eye twitched. “Please hear my plea for more power! I need it, I need it to destroy everyone who harmed me!”

“Wei Wuxian, I wish to gain power over resentful energy so that I may tear my enemies limb by limb!

“Give me money! You’re a god, aren’t you? Be useful for once and give me some gold!”

“Tch. If I’m going to pray for anything, then it’ll have to be the Seal. You’re a god, now, right? So you have no need for the Seal. Just give it up.”

No matter the good or bad, Wei Wuxian heard the wishes and prayers of the people down below and while some were innocent enough, there were those that wished for death, destruction, tools for torture, power, money, women…….you name it.

It made Wei Wuxian feel a little disgusted with humanity. He cut off his focus from the bad and focused on the prayer he received from his friends and family.

“Wei Wuxian, I heard you became a god.” It was Wen Qing. He hadn’t heard her voice in a long time. “I know this might seem shameless of me after all I did to you, but please. Please guarantee the safety of my family. We’re being hunted down and—”

Her prayer was abruptly cut off, before coming back in full force with notes of desperation. Her family had been captured and taken to Qiongqi Path! Wei Wuxian panicked. He didn’t know how to escape from this place and try to go help her.

The…..person who was watching over him evidently knew what he was thinking about and merely stated that gods cannot interfere with the mortal realm. So he was stuck.

But that didn’t mean he was out of options.

It took a few days, but he managed to wheedle out how to help: via dreams. He merely needed to get into the mind of one of his followers and tell them to help. Much like those prophetic dreams Wei Wuxian had read about as a kid.

So he buckled down, thinking of the best candidate to help him.

Lan Wangji looked at the landscape around him and concluded that he was dreaming. Though, it was a little odd that he was aware that he was dreaming. Not that he hasn’t realized he was dreaming before - especially in those many fantasies he had of Wei Ying - but to be aware that this is a dream and to see nothing but a flat landscape was pretty out of the ordinary.

Anyway, he digressed. What was going on?

“Uhh, Lan Zhan? Can you hear me?”

“W-Wei Ying?!” Lan Wangji couldn’t be blamed for stuttering. He wasn’t expecting this!

“Phew. Oh good, you can hear me. Anyway, Lan Zhan, I gotta be quick about this because I’m kinda sorta bending the rules here, but do you think you can go to Qiongqi Path and rescue Wen Qing and her family?”

“Okay.”

“Huh? Just like that? Not even going to ask me for a reason, er-gege?”

Lan Wangji’s ears flushed red at the address. “If Wei Ying wants to save them, you must have a good reason. That’s enough for me.”

“Ah, Hanguang-Jun.” The title was spoken fondly. “Always so good. I’ll tell you anyway. Wen Qing and her family sheltered Jiang Cheng and I after Lotus Pier fell and even brought back Jiang-shushu and Yu-furen’s bodies! That’s a debt I cannot repay.”

“I understand. I will help.”

He couldn’t see Wei Ying, but could practically feel the amusement from him.

“Wei Ying.”

“Yes?”

“Are......Are you well?”

“Of course I am. I’m actually feeling so much better than before.” Wei Ying grumbled, “I’m not even in pain anymore.”

“You were in pain?” Lan Wangji asked worriedly. “Wei Ying, why didn’t you say anything.”

“Lan Zhan, there was nothing you or anyone else could do to alleviate my pain. It doesn’t matter now. I’m okay.”

Lan Wangji was still worried and wanted to speak to him more, but---

“Ah! Looks like my time’s up!” Wei Ying exclaimed cheerfully as the dreamscape wavered. “See you, Lan Zhan!”

Lan Wangji nodded. “See you, Wei Ying.” I’ll catch up to you soon.

And 13 years later, Lan Wangji kept his promise.

(kinda) svsss au!mdzs

wei ying 21century biomechanical engineer by day and fanfiction writer by night dies in a car crash and get’s transmigrated in his favourite/most-hated novel as wei wuxian or the yiling patriarch. monster that killed his favourite character (jzx) and the sister of the protagonist (jyl) before he (jc) had to purge the evil that took over his beloved brother out of the world only to see him rip himself apart with corpses in his madness.

he get’s transmigrated to the day jfm takes him of the streets. as in he is dead by car one second the next he’s attacked by dogs (who he’s been terrified of forever for no particular reason) before being taken in by bad dad of the week jfm. (lqr is good uncle in general, wrh is bad dad of the month and qhj is bad dad of the year, jgs is bad dad of the century)

because wwx is an adult he can see what it does to jc to have him suddenly there and because he’s a rational adult he can ignore/put aside his fear of dogs for three kinda adorable monsters so jc get’s to keep his puppies and is less clingy to jfm. instead he’s just kinda fascinated with this world he woke up. yzy hates him less because his presence didn’t cost her own son as much. and over time begins to like this wild, weirdly mature, stupidly loyal child. he’s like a lotus root, she likes to say, he tangles with you and doesn’t let go. even if this is dangerous. lotus roots if they don’t let go sometimes drown people.

wwx just enjoys his second childhood. his first had sucked. he had grown up in an orphanage for troubled kids until at 18 he was inevetably kicked out and just through pure luck and a bit of good timing and his smarts managed to get an internship at a small laboratory that he, through his earth shattering findings, catapulted into a multi-million dollar one.

he has a nice sister, a grumpy but loving protagonist brother, an aunt that kinda loves him, an uncle that could have been so much worse had he been the original terrible wwx, and an awesome home with cool powers.

when time comes for cr study arc he is super excited and as first desciple and ward of the jiang family of course is allowed to go.

that is where he meets lwj. he had read hundreds of descriptions of his beauty but it doesn’t hold up to the real thing. and he kinda reminds him of the weird, sad hermit he met once on an old mountain during a holiday who he spend multiple months with, so of course he spends a lot of his time trying to befriend him. he wouldn’t have planned to do so at first. in the book and in a lot of fanfictions he had been a standoffish asshole and the first to condem wwx whenever but that monster truly deserved it. there had also been a lot of great fics where he had been a background ship and even one outrageously out of character but also perfectly in character from his point of view with him in love with wwx and keeping that love burning for thousands of years before meeting his reincarnation and falling in love all over again. it had brought wwx to tears and he had re-read it a few times.

he also finally get’s a chance to meet his favourite character. jin zixuan. at first he hadn’t liked him. he had insulted the protagonists sister and always been standoffish but then there had been the peony arc. it had been soly from jzx’s point of view (the first time the author left jc’ pov) and went from his childhood to his friendship with lqy (mian mian) to his falling in love with jyl and his confession to the birth of their son: jin ling. it had been a heartbreaking mirror to jc’s story where jc was the unwanted son with a maybe bastard taking his place to jzx as the only loved child taking the lives from so many people with a horrible father he had to be loyal to, no real friends that would sell all his actions to his father (at least lqy told him she could forget to mention one or two things if he asked) and an unwanted betrothal pressed on him since birth and a social awkwardness and inability to interact with people to rival wwx’s need for attention.

it had been awesome. he had been a bith stuck up in the beginning but had soon enough surrendered to his attempts to make friends and his idea that maybe if he hades not knowing his finance he could maybe send her letters.

it had worked and by the time wwx would have punched him he just said that his fiance is nice and that they are good friends.

he had stayed the whole year, learning with jc, having fun with nhs and jc and jzx, attempting to befriend lwj, and enjoying life.

before finally returning home to lp and finally seeing jyl again.

during the archery competition he doesn’t pull lwj’s head band of and the twin jades share the first place, wn (who he befriended on discussion conferences and mde more confident) lands on place two, jzx and jc land on place three, and he himself on place four (he was to preoccupied with lwj to truly give his all).

wrh is dispeased but wn is on second place and that is while not great for his sect it’s still a score so he hasn’t completely lost face. the indoctrination still happens because wc feels like he needs to reaffirm his position in his father’s court and lwj and jzx kill the xuanwu. wwx knows about jc getting help he had read every single agonising chapter about it but it still was to dangerous for the other parties to try safe them while it was still alive.

lotus pier still get’s attacked but wwx had been ready for it and they mostly survived. he still get’s kidnapped in the chaos and has his core melted by wzl and get’s thrown into the burial mounds during the chaos because things like him loosing his core or getting thrown into the burial mounds are inevitable.

in there the resentful energy whispers his memories back into him. he remembers crying and running away from dogs. he remembers clinging to a tree with only one shoe on. he remembers beautiful lan zhan screaming get lost after he showed him porn. remembers punching the peacock. remembers pulling the ribbon. rembmers jiang cheng’s core and the desperation to save those members of his family still left. remembers killing armies in a single day, corpses ravaging the battlefields. remembering pressed to a three lips on his - that part wasn’t mentioned in the book. remembers wen qing beautiful, proud wen qing on her knees begging him to safe her brother. remembers freeing the wen cultivators, the wen elders, the wen child, her dead wen brother from those golden camps. remembers the kind smile in the eyes of a stiff face of a corpse giving his soup to a-yuan. remembers that same face only now with anger clouding the eyes punching a hole through jin zixuan’s chest. remembers shijie - beautiful, mournign, kind, brave shijie - pushing him away. remembers the hate and desperation in jiang chengs eyes the fear and the pleading as he destroys the stygian tiger seal in an attempt to do one good thing before he dies. remebers the pained scream and tears welling out of devestated eyes and the satisfied curl of lips and the hysterical laughter that spilled from those same lips as jiang cheng saw him be ripped apart. unable to do anything as the last of his family died and he was left alone with nothing but the burden of those he swore to protect if they seved him and a newly orphaned nephew.

he throws up even if there is nothing left inside of him. he was right. wei wuxian. the yiling patriarch truly was a monster. and he would do anything to keep him from ruining everyones lifes again.

four months later he is found by jc and lwj. he had known they were looking for him but he had been so careful not to be found. seems like his luck finally ran out.

when jc tries to give him suibian he explains wzl maltes his core so he can’t pick it up again.

when lwj tells him demonic cultivation harms the body and mind he tells him how it woks and why the way he uses it isn’t dangerous als long as he keeps just using what he has around him instead of collecting it in a seal that would corrupt his mind over time.

when lwj pleads him to cume to gusu to be cleansed he expains over jc’s angy shouts that his loyalty lies first and foremost with yunmeng jiang but if he want’s he can maybe visit from time to time.

when he sees yzy, the new sect leader jiang until jc comes of age again, he cries in her dress while she scolds him for his foolish actions while she rubs his back. just like when he had been a child. because that’s what he was a child. it didn’t matter that he had the memories of growing into and adult two times.

he kills the wens on the battlefield with a heavy heart and wen ruohan with the lightest feeling of reliev if his chest.

he makes sure wen qing and her family and all the wens that had no other choice and all those that did recieve a fair punishment and their own farmland. the moling wen sect is born and under the jurisdiction of the lan sect. they become a sect of healing and help every person in need that comes seeking aid.

when wen qing learns of two cultivators and their prisoner traveling to gusu lan to have their prisoner be punished before going to baoshan-sanren’s mountain to have the eyesight of the blind one restored, she cuts out the yes of the criminal and implements them in the blind one. they still visit her from time to time and apparently have adopted a daughter.

lan wangji’s visit’s to yunmeng are still regular and it isn’t a rarity to see him smiling at young master wei while he tells him an outlandish tale that is just as likely to have happened as it is to haven’t while they wander the docks of lp.

a few years later wen qing and wei wuxian come up with and idea for him to built a new core. she can open his miridans, that shriveled together when his core was crushed, with needles and her qi and another person can let their qi circulate in wwx body like they did in their body while trying to form a core. lwj volunteers and after six month of a daily treatment his new core is stable enought to cut the treament down to once a week.

this proves to be good timing because jin ling’s one hundred day celebration will be soon (he was born a bit later in this because of all that was going on)

when wen qing tells lwj that they have reached a stage where someone else (not the person who started the qi infusions) can do the qi infusions no without destabalising wwx lwj refuses unless wwx wants someone else. wwx want’s to know why lwj invests so much time in him. que: wangxian confession.

jgs eventually dies do to mysterious cicumstances that don’t seem to unlikely concerning him a few months after he declared mxy due to his potential as his son.

jgy, a few days after gaining a new brother decided his standing in lanling is to tenuous to allow more siblings to threaten him position and created a nice long plan to kill jgs without any proof or witnesses.

without him he has no reason to kill nmj so they stay out of each other’s way before on the prompting of lxc they refresh their relationship and becoming tentative friends. nhs loves it and supports their friendship wholeheartedly because jgy is a wonderful shireld to hide behind when he doesn’t want to do any work and enventually and somehow manage to manuyer jgy in the positon of madam nie by having those two marry (yay less work for him let jgy manage his brother, yay less politics for nmj let jgy handle those, yay more power for jgy without having to kill his brother who he kinda likes)

over the following centuries the sects and cultivation slowly fade into obscurity until nothing but the myth of cultivation is left.

it is then that a familiar novel is written. only this time the ending is a lot more happy and a lot less tragic than the original piece.

wwx, when he tracks the author down meets Liu Wei, jiang chengs newest alias. after wwx, lwj, jc, and lxc had cultivated to immortality they had mostly gone their seperate ways, wwx and lwj stayed together of course.

after teasing jc endlessly wwx gets an idea and visit’s an old mountain again. and he was right the old hermit that had reminded him of lan zhan is there.

“zewu-jun” he greets.

apparently unlike lwj, wwx, and jc, lxc prefered to seclude himself on a mountain and simply enjoy his time there and let his grief over those that didn’t cultivate to immortality fester. he seems happier this time around. if wwx had to guess it would be because this time his brother has happiness.

it would also explain why he had acted so strangely the first time they met on that mountain and how the writer of that fanfiction know exactly what had happened between lwj and wwx. there was noone who could read his brother better and who would have the knowledge of what happened between them back then. he must have gotten inspired after he met wwx’s reincarnation. wwx can’t blame him - it isn’t as if he didn’t have inspiration at weirder times.

wwx convinces lxc to leave the mountain and he slowly becomes close to jc. they eventually (a few years later) begin dating and move in together.

(jc could write from jzx’s pov because they kinda were friends after xuanli marriage and he wanted him too be remembered)

What are your thoughts on NMJ?

On one hand, he’s very admirable - a good warrior, a good leader for his people, and certainly steadfast and honest.

But like LQR in some ways, his vision of justice is too short sighted.

JGY was never a particularly good person, but I think it’s somewhat understandable that he would be enraged with people insulting his mother.

But even more than that, while it’s also understandable that NMJ hated the Wens due to his father’s death, he didn’t even consider the possibility of them being innocent? Or was it just wool being pulled over his eyes?

Also he was pretty blindly against WWX’s demonic cultivation - which he was fine with during the SSC. No different from the rest, but all the more annoying since like LXC, he is seen as someone worthy of respect and some level of critical thinking.

He’s in no way a villain or deplorable, but sometimes people forget that he was very very stubborn too.

If LXC’s flaw is ignorance due to only seeing the good, his may be ignorance due to only seeing in black.

It’s kinda interesting how all the elder siblings apart from Wen Qing seem to have these flaws that are more blindspots than antagonistic flaws which eventually led to them suffering - NMJ and LXC and their relationship with JGY and going against the Dafan Wens, and JYL and her blind spot for both her brothers at various points that led to her heartbreak and death.

(Also, a hilarious thought just came to me, that in the aftermath of the SSC, JGS was the smartest sect leader. I mean, he was an utter asshole and led to so much pain and blood shed, but still he consolidated power for his sect, was able to manipulate everyone from his son to the cultivation world through him and was possibly the only one who saw WWX’s power for how useful it was and treated the Wen remnants without prejudice (by which I don’t mean to imply for a second that he treated them well, but just that he had no consideration for them apart from what they meant as pawns in his quest for power); he was scum, but Xie Lian help us, smart scum.)

All sect leaders are absolute dumbasses, including LXC and NMJ. They're essentially in their position because of their birthright and while they are strong, they're not particularly canny. Look, I love both of them, but their naivete shines in the text multiple times, which is why people like WWX and JGY are able to see through all of the BS so quickly. Even JGS isn't as subtle as he thinks because WWX has his number pretty much from the very beginning.

I think NMJ had a lot of room for growth and LXC does too, but LXC comes across as a little more sheltered than NMJ, probably because LXC still has LQR to take over for a bit. NMJ was thrust into the leadership role pretty early and that gives him a bit of a better grasp of the situation. He's still somewhat naïve and headstrong.

So my opinion? NMJ is a young hothead and a dumbass. But he had the potential to grow into a formidable man if he had been allowed to.

It annoys me when people (JC stans) say the the Lan Sect was abusive or too restricting in the upbringing of their children. Like first off, who was the person actually shown to be abusive? *cough*Madam Yu*cough* And then they have to go off on LQ because he’s the only authority figure in the Lan Sect that’s known. There’s literally no proof of any of the accusations against him and the Lan Sect and poetry of it in the Jiang Sect. The only thing against LQ really is that he was kinda petty against a teenage WWX, but WWX did end up being the mischievous troublemaker LQ feared he would be. Was what LQ did right? No, but WWX didn’t really do any favors for himself even though it wasn’t his fault either.

It really is like... yes, the Lan sect is strict. But they're not the ones whipping a child for sunbathing and more generally for having (dead) parents the sect leader's wife doesn't like, now are they? And yeah, LQR is petty and it's kind of ridiculous that he's such a dick to a teenager, but given again our major comparison for "people being assholes to WWX because they didn't like CSSR" we've got LQR targeting questions at him in class and then insisting knowing all the answers is nothing special when he gets them all right on one hand, and YZY whipping him on such a regular basis that his fellow disciples treat it like a joke on the other. Strict and abusive aren't the same thing! Nor are petty and abusive! It really is just... people just refuse to acknowledge that the Lan sect is quite simply better for WWX than the Jiang sect in pretty much every conceivable way.

i gotta preface w how mdzs (cql woobified things) is really about gray morality and no right answer. with some exceptions, no one is actually completely in the rightwrong. there are sympathetic characters, esp from certain perspectives, but it’s all biases and there’s too much to cover and i’m not a meta blogger.

that being said, su she is fucking annoying bc we’re going along wwx’s perspective. every time the guy gets dunked on it’s fucking hilarious. but if someone just gave it to me in the ‘am i the asshole’ thread on reddit, they’d all suck. and i’d be more inclined to side with su she.

guy tries his best to keep up. he sees the only people of worth are the young masters, and the rest are just footnotes and statistics. he’s clever enough to pull off that fake ‘badly-played’ battle song charade, and i really respected that. imagine being told, explicitly and implicitly, that you ain’t shit and you’ll never be shit. and the person who is shit can’t even deign to be magnanimous about it.

(you prob already know how much i identify with jc. i def identify with ss. not saying they didn’t do anything wrong, but we’re all our own protags and perhaps someone else’s antagonists/npcs. and just feeling like you’ll never be good enough and perhaps that’s just your natural limitations, which is something that cannot be fought.)

z!ss would have the mental maturity to just... let it go. luckily for the lans, they had the dubious privilege to look at things from lwj’s perspective. he’s not arrogant, he’s just... not well-socialized. it’s easier to forgive. also, some people are better at certain things than others. z!ss isn’t going to pick music to compete with lwj, that’s fucking stupid. music becomes a hobby, and by nature of z!ss’s scientific curiosity being nurtured by the gusu lan library, they study the guqin and musical cultivation just to put some theories together

(even being in a musical sect, z!ss’s playing skills are much lower than zyx’s)

somehow... because z!ss neither fears nor resents lwj, lwj looks at this oddly behaving outer disciple that doesn’t shy from him and “okay that’s a friend”. does his lwj thing. just pops in, silently listening, or ‘mn’s, a few words, and then leaves. or drifts alongside z!ss when everyone’s out on nighthunts or in public. occasionally solicits z!ss’s opinion.

(in lwj’s opinion: z!ss is a very mature and calm disciple, who gives great insights. intellectual. hard-working. kind and considerate. a credit to the gusu lan sect.)

(z!ss tying their ribbon into floppy bunny ears on their head in the privacy of their room: ???????)

z!ss is just living their life, studying at the lans (very peaceful, and they aren’t as anal about enforcing the rules on the outer disciples to some extent), trying not to freak out about the impending war and their possible death (they’ve kinda made peace with it. this second life feels like a dream, without anyone or anything tethering them down). bc they’re an outer disciple, lxc doesn’t cross paths with them nor does lwj talk much about them. so no lxc nor lqr involvement even if the two of them know that lwj has a ‘thing’.

during the cloud recesses, they keep out of the way. lwj doesn’t talk about himself, so wwx never learns about z!ss (not that z!ss thinks there’s much to learn). does NOT do the sword thing at biling lake, so nothing of interest there. just overall very innocuous.

the wens eventually attack to try and take down the cloud recesses. lxc flees with the books and as the sect leader. z!ss is resigned to giving their life here bc they’re just a nameless mook at this point of the novel, but lwj actually turns to ask them their opinion.

“honestly? go quietly with them for now. they need sect leader lan’s life, not ours. lan-er-gongzi will be a valuable hostage alive, and we’ll be able to live and rebuild better than fighting and ending gusu lan forever.”

z!ss is fucking baffled when lwj actively pulls them along to go surrender to the wens, and submit to attending the indoctrination camp. they expected lwj to just... go.

(still doesn’t realize that lwj considers them friends at this point).

doesn’t shoot wwx in the shoulder, so technically, everyone can escape the xuanwu. but, as precedence established... lwj turns to ask z!ss for their opinion.

“there’s a lot of us. what is the probability that we all make it out without further disturbing the xuanwu? and if we all don’t, can the people inside survive?”

piece said, z!ss sits back as a plan is formed to divvy up the disciples into two teams: one to escape and inform key people of this act of aggression by the wens (jc as the ymj sect heir, jzx as the llj sect heir, possibly lwj to return to CR) and taking some of the cultivators that rather retreat, and a second group to wait and hold off the xuanwu while they’re still fully fed and ready for a fight. the sect heirs were chosen bc the sect leaders were more likely to listen to them, and they’re considered ‘more important’ (insert z!ss eyeroll)

(z!ss knows that they could kill the stinky beast here and now, but they’ve finished talking for the day. good enough)

oop, no wangxian in the cave. guess all the romantic star-crossed development is just going to have to happen during the war ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ultimately, z!ss isn’t an all powerful deus ex machina, but happens to be an extra little voice of reason in lwj’s ear. and maybe that’s enough to reach peace and happiness before everyone’s 35 years old

Housefull 2 MDZS/The Untamed AU

HELLO THERE MY LOVELIES! I’M MAKING A WILD TUMBLR REAPPEARANCE AND I BRING WITH ME SHINY NEW SHOWS I’VE WATCHED AND PERHAPS THE GREATEST AU I’VE EVER WRITTEN DOWN!

Okay, so, I’m going to preface this by saying that I finally watched the Untamed over the past summer and now am slightly obsessed. I am also in the middle of reading the novel and watching the animation, so... that’s something.

Anyway, today, I decided that it would be a good idea to rewatch my favorite childhood film, a little Bollywood comedy titled Housefull 2. Upon rewatching this, I realized that the MDZS characters would fit really well into the convoluted mess of this plot and so I wrote a little bullet pointed AU idea thing.

(I don’t think I’ll have the time to write this, so if anyone wants to use this concept, pleaseeee tag me/tell me about it. Also, if anything like this is already written, pleaseee tell me too, I need the crack content.) (I’m also desi, by the way, so I don’t know much about Chinese culture, so please tell me if anything is offensive or just plain inaccurate.)

So, without further ado, I’ll be presenting this Housefull 2 MDZS/The Untamed AU!

-As per canon, JZX is emotionally constipated and couldn’t communicate until after his engagement with JYL got split up. Having made their sister cry, JC, WWX, and NHS (who gets roped into it) plan to crush JZX for hurting JYL.

-They send WQ to crush JZX by breaking his heart but give her such vague instructions that she accidentally falls for Mianmain.

NHS: “So... who’re we supposed to use to crush this Peacock. I mean, it can’t be any of us.”

WWX: “I don’t know about y’all, but I’d be great at this mission.” *wiggles eyebrows*

JC *rolls eyebrows*: “I think you forgot that mom will have your head if you do something like this.”

JC: “Hey, you remember her from university?”

WWX: “Who?”

JC: “You know, *her*, the one with the needles who could murder anyone and get away with it”

WWX: *laughing* “Holy hell, the Peacock doesn’t know what’s coming for him!”

NHS: “And who might this mystery lady be?” He says, knowing exactly who this mystery lady is.

JC and WWX: “Wen Qing.”

-All the while, JGS thinks that WQ and JZX are engaged because the Idiot Trio sent an envoy ahead that claimed WQ was a head disciple of Jiang and is a replacement for JYL. JGS has now set the engagement of WQ and JZX in August.

-They find out about Mianmian/LQY and WQ too late, and now JC, WWX, and NHS send someone else, LWJ, to crush JZX’s heart.

JC: “You can’t continue to do this, what happened to our deal?!”

WQ: *death glares* “What our deal said was that I needed to woo someone vaguely in relation to the nickname “Peacock” and happened to be in Lanling as payback for JZX breaking your sister’s heart, I don’t think I’m the one who forgot our deal here.”

JC: “And your first thought was that Mianmian/LQY was Peacock?!”

WQ: “She’s pretty and a Jin, so…”

Before there would be a throw down in this place, WWX interrupted: “Okay, WQ it’s alright that you feel for Mianmian/LQY, but who is supposed to help us teach JZX a lesson now?”

NHS: “I don’t know, but it could maybe be someone who’s already close to JZX.”

JC: “That sounds like a horrible ide- Wait, that’s lowkey kinda genius. Do you remember him from university?”

WWX: “Him?”

JC: “Yeah, you know, him, the one who’s entire vocabulary was the syllable “Mn” and whom you pined after for years.”

WWX *blushing like there’s no tomorrow*: “We can’t send him, he’ll probably send me off to do 50 handstands”

JC: “Please, he’s do anything you ask him to”

NHS: *flutters his fan while knowing to an extreme degree what’s going to happen*

-They send WWX as LWJ’s ‘driver’ for him to make sure the plan is on track, but it just ends in LZ/WY pining. JC is also sent there as a businessman since he needs to make sure JGS doesn’t suspect anything too suspicious. At the same time though, because JGS thinks WQ and JZX are engaged and since LWJ spends most of his free time talking to Mianmian/LQY about his hopeless pining, JGS starts to think that Mianmian/LQY and LWJ are to be engaged and plans another engagement. JGS is quick to inform LQR about this and now LQR thinks that his nephew is married to Mianmian/LQY and that they’re getting married in August.

-At some point here, LXC is in Lanling to visit his bud Meng Yao and that’s when JC and LXC begin talking and stuff. (This can be platonic or romantic, I don’t have a personal preference).

-Additionally, this is also when WWX and LWJ begin investigating the happenings of Lanling and discover the extent of an asshole JGS is. They'd probably be reported sporadically and NHS definitely sent this evidence to detectives XXC and Song Lan.

-So far, no one has gotten to properly executing this plan, and JC & WWX are beginning to question things. Because things couldn’t possibly get worse, this is the moment when Madam Yu decides that it’d be a good idea to visit the Jins in order to remind them of their arranged marriage between JYL and JZX. So now, JC and WWX have to drag both LXC and JYL into this convoluted plot because otherwise everything would go horribly wrong. JC, WWX, NHS, JYL, LXC, WQ, LWJ, and Mianmian/LQY (WQ directly told the boys that if they don’t let Mianmian/LQY in on this, she’ll personally shove a needle where it hurts) are in this room together, attempting to processes the absolute mess that has occurred. (Poor JZX is still living obliviously, his father didn’t even tell him that he’s technically engaged to WQ now. JZX is just vibing in confusion and thinks he’s just being buds with LWJ because LWJ is horrible at flirting with anyone that’s not WWX so his job of breaking JZX is... not going well.) In the end, after being on the receiving end of many of JYL’s disappointed looks, JC and WWX convince her to help them with their plot just this once. (She wouldn’t tell anyone that she was secretly pleased, but hey, JYL kept her vengeance deep, deep down low and deserved to exercise it just this once.)

-(it is important to note here that in this AU, Madame Yu doesn’t know what JZX looks like)

-The plan would be that LXC would (reluctantly) pretend to be JZX in front of Madam Yu. Additionally, Madame Yu thinks the actual JZX is NHS (because JC panicked and that’s the first name he could come up with when Madam Yu asked who was that kid if LXC was JZX). This was to drive JGS off their tails as he still believed that WQ is engaged to JZX now. (He did email LQR about this as well who now thinks his nephews are now engaged to JYL and Mianmian/LQY, respectively, and are going to be married that August.) This is the part where WWX and LWJ finally start realizing that their feelings are mutual after a pep talk from Mianmian/LQY, LXC, and WQ (who’s pep talk sounded more like a shovel talk) for LWJ and from JC, NHS, and JYL for WWX. This is also when Mianmian/LQY and WQ grow closer and also decide that the rest of the group is useless and team up with NHS to knock some sense into JZX. Finally, JZX becomes less emotionally constipated and confesses to JYL, and because WWX, JYL, and JC think that an intervention from the scariest trio (WQ, Mianmian/LQY, NHS) is apt punishment, they call an end to their payback. (Also partially due to JZX having character growth as different characters grilled him throughout this AU). While this is great for our mains, it can only cause a bunch of shenanigans because of the way the parental figures interpret this situation.

-JGS and Madame Jin think the pairings are: WQ/JZX, LQY/LWJ, LXC/JYL, WWX/NHS

-Madame Yu thinks the pairings are: JZX (except it’s LXC’s version of JZX)/JYL, LWJ/WWX, LQY/WQ, and (maybe?) JC/NHS (except it’s JZX who got confused for NHS)

-LQR thinks the pairings are: WQ/JZX, LQY/LWJ, and LXC/JYL

-Meanwhile, the pairings actually are: JZX/JYL, LWJ/WWX, LQY/WQ, and (maybe?) JC/LXC

-In conclusion, they’re all utterly fucked. Therefore, they have to bring everyone into this convoluted plot now, and finally JZX’s experiences over the past months make a little more sense to him. While discussing this mess they’ve created, WWX has an idea.

WWX: “Okay, so, looking at the actual chart of who everyone thinks is who, the biggest disparity is between Madam Yu and JGS’s viewpoints, right? What if we just removed Madam Yu from the equation, make Madam Jin and Madam Yu have a falling out so that Madam Yu won’t be invited to the wedding so that we can focus on one of the false interpretations of all the relationships happening.”

JC: “Madam Jin and Madam Yu have been the best of friends, how are we supposed to make them hate each other?”

JYL: “I mean, we could stage something, a betrayal of some sort.”

NHS: “I’m liking the way you think.”

-So through this plot and NHS’s concerning amount of connections, our group succeeds in breaking apart Madam Yu and Madam Jin’s friendship. JC and WWX also manage to worm their way into convincing the Jins to let JYL marry LXC to “spite Madam Yu’s wish of combining the Jiang and Jin families.” Because of JGS arranging and emailing parents throughout this fic, JYL, JZX, LXC, Mianmian/LQY, WQ, NHS, WWX, and LWJ are basically set to be married in August, except it’s to the wrong person! Soon enough, the wedding day arrives and the gang has a plan: they’ll dress the exact same and have the most elaborate and disruptive headpieces so that their faces are covered.

(Note: Instead of NHS being part of the people getting married as it should be, JC is replaces him for the actual ceremony. Since the our marrige folks have their faces covered, nobody really notices that JC replaced NHS and is marrying LXC. This can be either because of a marriage of convenience to combine companies, or out of actual feelings. I’m cool with either interpretation in my head. Meanwhile, NHS is out in the crowd and People didn’t him because of his surprisingly useful camouflage fan.)

-And so, the group sets NHS as their distraction while JC pretends to be NHS for the wedding ceremony. NHS basically knocks into the most expensive vase he can find so that most of the parental figures turn around, giving the group getting married the opportunity to switch places with one another until they’re in the right spot. So, a bunch of stuff happens, Madam Yu barges in to yell about how disgraceful it is for the Jins to go on with this marriage even though they broke the engagement in the first place and betrayed the trust of the Jiang corporation. Madam Yu also just, airs out JGS’s dirty laundry in a real badass way.

-It’s all chaotic. Hell breaks loose. JGS goes batshit crazy and starts bringing our firearms. And so, basically, everyone ends up hiding behind pillars and stuff, though, eventually, after everyone has to run out of their hiding spot’s because Su She cannot shut the fuck up and keeps getting the other’s exposed, they all pile behind JGS in the world’s worst game combined game of Hide & Seek and Slither.io. It all finally ends when JGS gets arrested for a shit ton of crimes, and everything finally ends with a joint wedding between 8 people, except this time it’s with the right partners.

So, yeah, that’s the AU that I wrote in a dazed craze in the past 2 hours. I hope it was at least partially understandable. I hope y’all have fun with it! Again, if you know of a fanfic that’s got a similar energy or want to write something similar, please tell me, I need more fanfiction. Also, that last scene is basically a direct copy of this scene from the movie Housefull 2. (I’m sorry though, I can’t find an english subbed version of the scene. :(

lwj goes to a brothel cause he horny and sad about wwx, itd have to be some timed at the end of the war but before the wen stealing (after the thing where wwx was day drinking with the ghost brigade maybe??? lwj wanders up, sees yrz in the window, they talk, yaz is... magnetic, cause he leaned waaaay in to the seduction path and just kinda let loose? and we know our boi is smooth as fuck when he wants to be. lwj gets charmed up the stairs (come into my parlor said the spider to the fly lol) and into sitting for (very very good) tea.

Episode 27: The One where I Want to Punch Basically Every Sect Leader in the Face. Repeatedly. With a Chair.

And we start off back in the rain, AKA OUR ENDLESS TEARS

WE GET TO SEE LWJ’S PRECIOUS BABY FACE AS HE FALLS HEAD OVER HEELS IN THAT FLASHBACK

IT HURTS SO GOOD

Wwx: i wished to stand with justice and live without regrets. But tell me now, who’s strong, who’s weaker? Who’s right and who’s wrong?

Oh god, his voice! HE’S DISTRESSED

And now he drops his umbrella to the ground AS HE TRIES TO DROWN HIMSELF IN THE RAIN

THEY PACKED ALL THAT HEARTBREAK INTO THE FIRST 6MIN OF THE EPISODE, WTF, SOMEBODY STAB ME

And after all that emotional torture we get Plot Stuff happening

Ugh, gross, they’re letting the idiot sect leaders talk again

They’re all blah blah wwx is evil blah blah he murders ppl blah blah we hate him blah blah

This whole part here is so difficult to watch. They’re literally just trash-talking my PRECIOUS SUNSHINE BOY

Jc, lwj, and lxc look visibly uncomfortable with what’s going down and they kind of sort of tried to defend wwx but they didn’t present a united front or hold their ground

Instead they let yao and ouyang run their stupid mouths

If you look closely while this is happening, you can see that lwj legit GRINDS HIS TEETH with how much he’s holding back. MY POOR BB HAVING TO SIT THERE AND LISTEN TO EVERYONE DISPARAGE HIS SOULMATE

And that badass moment ends

And just like that, lwj shuts down again; expression flat and gaze lowered

GOD, THIS CLAN HAS HURT HIM SO MUCH THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE

I MEAN, THEY MUST’VE, FOR HIM TO BE ABLE TO JUST DISCONNECT LIKE THAT

THAT IS NOT THE BEHAVIOR OF A NORMAL WELL-ADJUSTED PERSON

Basically the entire lan clan needs to go to therapy, like, STAT

Oh, i just noticed, lwj has his fists clenched at his sides. He’s clenching them hard, too. I think they’re trembling a bit, actually…

And then whips it down with zidian

Now we get some feelings-laden Yunmeng bros time

A-yuan shows up and leg-grabs jc and it’s ADORABLE

But jc yells at him bc he’s a JERK

Wwx scolds jc and then is a Dad to a-yuan: don’t put your hand in your mouth, you were just touching dirt!

Awww, we get to see jc fight back a smile at this! HE WANTS TO BE AN UNCLE, I JUST KNOW IT.

More plot stuff happens

And the episode ends with us still in the burial mounds with the yunmeng bros

And you know what, i’m just gonna focus on our BAMF mianmian moment bc quite frankly the rest of the episode either had me in tears of anguish or spitting mad. There was no inbetween.

I’m gonna end up having blood pressure problems at this rate.

I’m too poor young to have blood pressure problems.

I did take the patronus quiz, but I can't remember for the life of me what the result was😂 I think it's really nice that your parents like energetic people, I couldn't even tell what kind of people my parents like haha - on one side, they probably wouldn't like somebody as... stiff as LWJ but WWX might be TOO energetic, though I believe they would prefer him over LWJ. Most of all they might like JGY actually (if he's not being outright murderous ofc). Anyways, WWX lovers tend to dislike JZX -✨

And honestly, I love the thought of WWX being a computer geek/good at computers, it really fits his inventive character! Also!! Your dad sounds pretty cool with fictional characters, my parents always look at me weirdly and tell me to "live in reality" when I have strong feelings on them😅 but!! Imo Denethor is one of the most complex and the best characters in LotR, of course he's really a dick but I tend to differentiate between characters I love and characters I find interesting -✨

Personally, I'm pagan so I celebrate the Wiccan holidays even though I am not Wiccan. I think they're actually Celtic holidays but I'm not too sure about that... My favourite night of the year is Samhain/Halloween, I used to love Christmas so much but with the years the festive spirit got... less and less. On Samhain I always feel the spiritual energy, though, that's why I love it so much! -✨

I was talking of Denethor earlier, and since he's a kinda asshole guy hindering one of the best things I was wondering what you thought of LQR! I feel like many people dislike him because he dislikes WWX, a fan favourite, similarly to Denethor and Faramir. And do you see any parallels between LQR and Denethor? I never thought about whether I see any, but this came to my mind spontaneously😅 -✨

Ha, no that’s fair! I think I only really remember that my patronus was a dolphin since they’re one of my favourite animals, so I was really excited about it at the time. If I took it again it would probably change though, those quizzes usually always do 😂

I think my Dad’s cool with fictional characters because he’s a big fanboy himself with his own favourites, honestly. My Mum’s just happy to see people having interests in fictional worlds and characters, especially with how happy my Dad gets with his own interests. I grew up on local trips to conventions and things of the like, so it’s no wonder my interests and love of fandom is the way it is 😊 It was probably their influence!

Oh, cool! I don’t know too much about Wiccan holiday and tradition personally, but I know a few people that lean towards the traditions themselves. Just out of interest, what do you enjoy the most out of celebrating holidays like Halloween? You mention that you love the feel of the spiritual energy, what other things about the holidays do you enjoy? I hope you don’t mind me asking, I’m just curious and would love to know more! 😊

Oddly enough, I don’t have many feelings about Lan Qiren. He’s a character that I neither like nor dislike (well. Maybe a little bit of dislike when Lan Wangji was punished. But not like, out right ‘this character is on the evil list now 😠’). I think the thing people forget is that Lan Qiren has a right to his fear for and protect over his nephews? Whether those feelings are wrong or right are another question - but from his point of view he’s already seen what loving too much can do and how it can ruin a person through what it did to his brother and how it left him with Wangji and Xichen to raise. I think he also sees Lan Wangji’s feelings for Wei Wuxian and worries that history is repeating itself (especially since we know Lans don’t really have a good track record with love).

Given his history of knowing Cangse Sanren as well and the fact that Wei Wuxian seems to mirror his mother a lot, I can imagine that he knows well enough that Wei Wuxian is like fire and smoke. He’s wild and untameable (pun not intended), and not something you can catch and just hide away. I think there’s frustration there for his own past and whatever relationship he had with Cangse Sanren, and the fear of how wild Wei Wuxian is and how taken his youngest nephew quickly becomes for him. I don’t think Lan Qiren really knows what to do in certain situations either, especially since he ties himself so tightly to the clan rules that they restrain him. Unlike the Twin Jades he’s not really struggling against the rules and attempting to bend and question them, but I think there are a few instances where he’s like ‘rules are rules - even if I don’t want to do this, I have to’.

As for parallels between him and Denethor ... it has been a very long time since I read Lord of the Rings, so a lot of what I remember of the character these days comes from the films. There’s nothing that really springs directly to my mind? It’s not a connection I’ve ever really thought about honestly, but if you had any thoughts about it I’d be interested to know! 😊
