so im working on a pretentious, i mean, JP themed playlist, and i really wanted to throw in a composer with the same initials as a joke
which is why Johann Pachelbel and Jean-Philippe Rameau have infiltrated this playlist despite having no other relevance to his character;;;
speaking of, here's what i got so far:
J. Pachelbel - any fugue, just... anything that isn't Canon in D
J.P. Rameau - Les Indes galantes, Forêts paisibles (but this rock cover specifically)
Sergei Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet, No. 14 Dance of the Knights (stolen from another JP playlist you know who you are lmao. it gets bonus points for being from a ballet)
Sergei Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor, Op. 18 (there's a reason it's popular!! and i like the strings in it!!)
Dmitri Shostakovich - Waltz No.2 (another popular one. it's a pretty tepid choice i admit)
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherazade, Op.35 (this one's pretty well known too. apparently there's optional yelling in the 4th movement?? gets bonus points for being a ballet)
Aram Khachaturian - Masquerade Suite (another popular one, especially the Waltz, which fits him rather well. though i also like Nocturne and Mazurka. apparently there's a ballet of this so that's bonus ballet points)
Khachaturian - Gayane, Sabre Dance (I'M KIDDING. but a JP hater would have chosen this)
Khachaturian - Gayane, Dance of the Comrades (since i do not hate him, i'm replacing the previous with this from the same ballet. and ofc, bonus ballet points)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker, Arrival of Drosselmeyer (there was a whole thing on Twitter about how JP's smile resembles a nutcracker, so this was obvious. Uncle Drosselmeyer as a character is rather JP-esque as well, at least, when he's pretending to be nice)
Alexander Mosolov - Iron Foundry (referenced in JP's win quote to Zangief: "Seeing you, I can't help but recall Mosolov's Iron Foundry, tovarisch.")
Mosolov - Two Nocturnes, Op. 15 (it's really unsettling! and reminded me of JP's introduction scene in World Tour, with the horror elements)
Igor Stravinsky - The Firebird, The Infernal Dance of King Kastchei (bonus ballet points, and for sharing names with his j.HK) (honorable mention to Petrushka, another ballet, but it isn't exactly 'JP'. but i like Danse Russe so, i'm mentioning it lmao)
Alexander Scriabin!!! - everything!!! (recently discovered for me and im in love. there's a whole collection made by Dmitri Alexeev of all his works, and i can totally see JP doing paper work with it playing in the background)
this list is already too long, but here are some extra notes: Rimsky-Korsokov was part of 'The Mighty Five', also including Modest Mussorgsky, Mily Balakirev, Cesar Cui, and Alexander Borodin. This was a historically and musically significant group, which is why I wanted to at least name drop them. Actually, it was looking into Mosolov that sent me down the rabbit hole regarding similar Soviet-era composers. Obviously there's a lot going on here with the... artistic (and political) censorship at the time. Or, all of interesting stuff going on with composers finding influences from traditional folklore/ dances. Or alternatively, responding to and processing contemporary events through music, as a form of subtle protest...
But I've only glossed over these topics so I'm going to refrain from going too deep on it;;
As for connecting all this to JP, gosh idk, these comic pages from Vol. 3 and 4 seem relevant. I'll let these stew as a final thought:

Jean- David Nau aka François l'Olonnais - the horrible Buccaneer
Jean-David Nau (c. 1635?- 1670?), known as François l'Olonnais or Fleau des Espagnoles, was considered as one of the most terrible Buccaneers of the 17th century.
Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin ( Exquemelin came to the islands as an indentured servant. From his last master, he learned the skills of a surgeon and later sailed with Henry Morgan), whose book De Americaensche Zee-Rovers, published in 1678, is one of the most important source works on the history of piracy in the Caribbean, describes in the second part of his book the life of L'Olonnais, who was born in the harbour town of Les Sables-d'Olonne in the Bas-Poitou on the French Atlantic coast of unknown date but presumably around 1635, and is regarded as the source for him and his work, but what actually happened should be regarded with caution, even though his statements may well be more trustworthy than others.
Tumblr media
François l'Olonnais (x)
After L'Olonnais had come to the Caribbean as an indentured servant at a young age and served his time, he came to the island of Hispaniola and after some time to the Buccaneers and became one of their leaders.
His  apparently psychopathic character revealed itself on numerous occasions in the years that followed. When it came to obtaining information of any kind, he personally committed acts of bestial cruelty. One of his "preferences" was to hack his victims to pieces alive with a sabre or loveed it  to burn his victims or cut out their tongues or hearts.
He received his first command from the governor of Tortuga, Monsieur de la Place. After some time, l'Olonnais was shipwrecked near Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico. A group of Spanish soldiers attacked him and his crew, killing almost the entire crew. L'Olonnais himself survived by smearing himself with the blood of the others and hiding among the dead. After the Spaniards left, he escaped with the help of some slaves and set off in a boat for Tortuga, where he obtained another boat by trickery. Shortly afterwards, he and his crew took the inhabitants of a small town on the north coast of Cuba hostage and demanded a ransom from the Spanish crown. The governor of Havana sent a ship to kill l'Olonnais' troop. However, the ship fell into the hands of the pirates. L'Olonnais had all but one of the crew beheaded. The man who was spared was to bring a message to Havana in which l'Olonnais declared that from now on he would show no mercy to any Spaniard.
In 1667, l'Olonnais set sail from Tortuga with a fleet of eight ships and a crew of 1,600 pirates to plunder Maracaibo. On the way there, he encountered a Spanish treasure ship off Hispaniola, which he successfully captured. In the process, he brought in rich booty of cocoa, precious stones and more than 40,000 pesos in silver. A second Spanish ship fell into his hands without a fight, along with ammunition, gun powder and 12,000 pesos.
At that time, access from the Gulf of Venezuela to the lake of Maracaibo (and thus to the city itself) was secured by a fortress with 16 cannons. However, L'Olonnais attacked the fortress from the unfortified land side and captured the city. The pirates then proceeded to loot the town, but found that most of the inhabitants had fled and hidden their gold. The pirates tracked down the inhabitants and tortured them until they revealed the hiding places of their possessions. For weeks, the pirates raped, tortured and harassed the townspeople. They removed the cannons from the fortress and destroyed almost the entire city fortifications to allow for a quick retreat. The pirates then turned south towards the village of Gibraltar (Zulia), on the southern shore of Lake Maracaibo, to plunder it too, because many of the town's inhabitants had fled there with their goods.
Although the pirates were outnumbered, they overpowered the garrison of Gibraltar, which is said to have consisted of around 500 soldiers, plundered the village and retreated back to Maracaibo. They demanded a ransom of 20,000 silver pesos and 500 cows and oxen for their departure. In total, they brought 260,000 silver pesos, precious stones, silverware, silk fabrics and a number of slaves in this raid, which they divided among themselves. The damage done in this way was so great that the city, which had previously been a major centre for the export of cocoa, almost ceased to exist.
Word of his attack on Maracaibo and Gibraltar reached Tortuga, and he was henceforth nicknamed "Plage des Spaniers" (French: Fléau des Espagnols). This made it easier for him to recruit participants for his next foray, and so later that year 700 pirates took part in his next attack on the Central American mainland. They headed for the coast of Nicaragua with Cabo Gracias a Dios, but drifted with the current into the Gulf of Honduras when there was no wind. After plundering Puerto Cavallo, l'Olonnais was ambushed by a large number of Spanish soldiers on the way to San Pedro, from which he narrowly escaped. He was, however, able to take some Spaniards prisoner. Exquemelin writes of this:
"He drew his sabre, and with it he cut open the breast of one of these poor Spaniards, and pulling out its heart with his blasphemous hands, bit and tore at it with his teeth, like a wild wolf, and said to the others: I will treat you likewise, if you show me no other way."
In fear of their lives, the surviving Spaniards showed him another way to San Pedro. However, L'Olonnais and his surviving men were repulsed and had to retreat to the ships. In the Gulf of Honduras, they ran onto a sandbank. Unable to get their ship free, they carpentered a new one from the remains, and eventually fell into the hands of the native population in the Gulf of Darién around 1670. Exquemelin writes that:
"they tore him to pieces alive, threw his body limb by limb into the fire, and his ashes into the air."
The seemingly fitting end for such a bestial man.

The Osborn Flank Officer’s Sabre
Henry Osborn (C.1785-1808) is one of the most famous sword cutlers in Georgian Britain. He created the famous 1796 Patterns of cavalry swords, in collaboration with Major-General John Gaspard Le Marchant to create what he thought was the best sword. He partnered with John Gunby in 1808, becoming Osborn & Gunby (C.1808-1820). These sabres have an average of a 10cm curve. Used by Officer’s of the Light Cavalry and Infantry as a frock/dress/fighting sword. A 10cm curved blade is one of the most curved styles of sabre in British Regiments, being highly irregular, rare and practically unusable in fighting circumstances. These sabres were based off the famous, well-liked and popular 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Sabre, but sized-down for infantry/dress. Also highly inspired by Shamshirs, following the 1798-1801 Egyptian Campaign, copying the Mameluke-style, being unfullered and highly curved. These have stirrup-hilts or D-guards and shamshir/fullered half-moon blades. The term ‘flank officer’ refers to the Flank Company's of Light Infantry and Grenadiers, but the term ‘flank officer’s sabre’ normally refers to a light-weight, highly curved officer’s sword of the Georgian-Period. Naval, Infantry, Cavalry, Army and Volunteer Officers etc. could all carry this type of sword via regulation.
The 11th sword’s (L-R) scabbard is not made by Osborn but by J.S. Lowther, possibly originally had the red dot’s. The green dot fitting florals (twin tulip) only occur on steel mounts, while the red dots (3-pronged rose) only occur on brass mounts. The steel mounts could be earlier, but can’t say for now.
Stamps (bottom left) are found on the ricasso, Osborn being on the spine. The G stamp can occur once or twice on the ricasso. The bold G for Osborn/O&G and the thinner G for just Osborn and Gunby. The Osborn stamp only/tens to occur on un-etched versions, as it’s not needed when the name is etched onto the blade.

Drive Your Corvette to Work Day
Many Corvette owners own other cars as well, and often only drive their Corvettes on special occasions. Corvettes are regularly driven on beautiful days or are taken to car shows, but usually aren’t used as commuter cars for work. But, today is different—today is Drive Your Corvette to Work Day. Sponsored by Mid America Motorworks, a supplier of aftermarket Corvette parts and accessories, the day has taken place since 2001. The goal is to get as many Corvette owners as possible around the world to drive their car, in order to show how popular the car is. It takes place on the Friday closest to June 30, the day in 1953 when the first Corvette came off the General Motors assembly line.
Harley J. Earl was no stranger to designing cars. He redesigned the LaSalle in the late 1920s, designed the Buick Y-Job—which is seen as being the first concept car, and also designed the GM Le Sabre. He then began working on “Project Opel,” which would turn into the Corvette. In its design, he took inspiration from the Jaguar XK120. On January 17, 1953, the Corvette was introduced at GM’s traveling Motorama display, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.
Later that year, on June 30, the first Corvette for consumers came off the assembly line at the GM plant in Flint, Michigan. Tony Kleiber, a worker at the plant, drove the first car off the line. The Corvette had been named by Myron Scott, a photographer for Chevrolet. After looking in the dictionary for a word that started with a “C,” in order to give the make and model phrase an alliterative effect, he found “corvette,” the name for a small warship that was fast and easy to maneuver.
At a time when most cars were built out of steel, the Corvette was the first sports car with a body made completely of fiberglass. There were only 300 built the first year, all of which were white convertibles with red interiors and black canvas tops. They otherwise used standard Chevrolet parts, such as the “Blue Flame” six-cylinder engine, and the two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Still, they could go from the speed of 0-60 in 11 seconds and could reach a speed of 110 mph. They had no exterior door handles, and no windows as well, just plastic curtains. They had a sticker price of $3,513, which is $32,979 in 2018 dollars. All were equipped with a $91 heater and $145 AM radio, which was added to the sticker price. 1953 models are worth much more now: the third Corvette produced was sold for 1.06 million dollars in 2006.
As of 2018, there have been seven generations of Corvettes (C1-C7). V8 engines were an option beginning in 1955, and 9 out of 10 buyers selected the option that year; all Corvettes have since been equipped with V8s. By the 1960s, the Corvette was known as America’s favorite sports car. The second generation (C2) of the car was produced from 1963-1967 and was known as the Sting Ray. One of the most popular Corvettes of all time is the 1963 model, which is unique for having a split rear window.
Corvettes have been produced in Flint, Michigan, St. Louis, Missouri, and since 1981, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where the National Corvette Museum also is also located. There were issues when making the 4th generation of the car, thus only one 1983 model exists, and production was continued with the 1984 models. The lone 1983 model can be seen at the Corvette Museum. Years after the first Corvette rolled off the assembly line, they still are towards the top of the pack for speed and acceleration. They have also been continually produced longer than any sports car or passenger car in the world.
Drive Your Corvette to Work Day is being observed today! It has been observed the closest Friday to June 30th since 2001.

The Chicken Man (Sabre) The Rainbow Child (Rainbow Steve, from either SS or SSO. Your pick) And the Illusion Child (ILLUSION STEV-) .... And because I dont see much of him because he is a murderer- (Never Forget-) The Empty Galaxy (Void-)
Already did Sabre and Rainbow Steve! Thank you for asking though!
DISASTER SON
favorite thing about them: 90% of the things he does is motivated by his chronic stress and perfectionism, and I find that tragic but relatable.
least favorite thing about them: How he treats the Guardian >:c That is just not ok. Also, random fact: I like Illusion more than Reality, even though they are the same person XD
favorite line: “And now I have to put up with the fact that all you do is ramble randomly and now I’m doing it because you’re CONTAGIOUS in the way you SPEAK.”
brOTP: Illusion and Elemental. Let these two brothers meet and work together to become better people and to overcome their trauma. Pleeease qwq
OTP: Illusion x learning healthy coping mechanisms to deal with his stress; and Illusion x the single life
nOTP: Any romantic ship he is in. I headcanon that Illusion is aromantic and doesn’t want a relationship, hence my otp. But of course, I’m cool with people who do want to ship him with someone.
random headcanon: Post-Reality Steve, he has developed a craving for bagels and cream cheese. And he hates it so much.
unpopular opinion: I think the fandom categorizes him as a yandere? Alright, here’s my take: he ain’t a yandere! He’s a tsundere!! >:0 In a platonic way, of course, since I think he’s aro.
song i associate with them: “Want You Gone” by Jonathan Coulton and performed by Ellen McLain from Portal 2
favorite picture of them:
Tumblr media
He screm to the sky.
THE EDGY PIECE OF GARBAGE
favorite thing about them: I like how he sounds/acts when he gets frustrated with Sabre running away. He sounds so childish and secretly insecure.
least favorite thing about them: He murdered my son :))))) And manipulated Elemental Steve and was indirectly responsible for Time Steve getting Thanos-ed :)))
favorite line: “Are you trying to run away again?!?”
brOTP: none, but I like to imagine that Galaxy and Void used to have a brotherly relationship before Galaxy cut ties with him.
OTP: Void x never winning
nOTP: Rainbow/Void
random headcanon: Void actually knows little to nothing about astronomy and physics, even though people assume he does because he’s the edgy black hole/empty galaxy. He rolls along with this assumption and pretends to be an expert about space and physics. In general, I like to imagine he only understands 20% of what he’s doing.
unpopular opinion: Void Steve’s arc is probably one of my least favorite Steve Saga arcs. The pacing was just bleh and several episodes did very little for the story. But maybe I’ll rewatch the arc to give it another chance XD
song i associate with them: “Dark Matter” by Les Friction
favorite picture of them: I am tempted to post a picture of what Void Steve looks like when you turn off the ‘hat’ part of his Minecraft skin...But I will spare everyone from that image XD
Thank you for the ask!!!

Love Triangles
I was thinking the other day, about what determines the second male/female and what determines the main male/female lead. And then I was thinking about which romantic dramas don’t involve love triangles and I... couldn’t think of any. So today I will analyze one, love triangle tropes, and two why dramas always include love triangles.
Tumblr media
The love triangle in A Love So Beautiful
Types of Love Triangles
There are three main types of love triangles:
A - when the male/female lead has loved both persons in the love triangle
B - when both members of the love triangle have their moments with the male/female lead
C - when its obvious that one member of the love triangle is seen only as a “friend” or “sister” or “brother” (aka has no chance)
Some dramas feature love triangle B and love triangle C at the same time, here are some examples:
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)
Love triangle B: Xu Feng (旭凤) - Jin Mi (锦觅) - Run Yu (润玉)
Love triangle C: Sui He (穗禾) - Xu Feng (旭凤) - Jin Mi (锦觅)
Blossom in Heart (海棠经雨胭脂透)
Love triangle B: Lang Yuexuan (朗月轩) - Gu Haitang (顾海棠) - Lang Yueming (朗月明)
Love triangle C: Long Mohua (龙莫婳) - Lang Yuexuan (朗月轩) - Gu Haitang (顾海棠)
Legend of Yunxi (芸汐传)
Love triangle B: Long Feiye (龙非夜) - Han Yunxi (韩芸汐) - Gu Qishao (顾七少)
Love triangle C: Baili Mingxiang (百里茗香) - Long Feiye (龙非夜) - Han Yunxi (韩芸汐)
Some feature both love triangle A and love triangle C as well:
Put Your Head on My Shoulder
Love triangle A: Gu Weiyi (顾未易) - Situ Mo (司徒末) - Fu Pei (傅沛)
Love triangle C: Xie Yuyin (谢雨吟) - Gu Weiyi (顾未易) - Situ Mo (司徒末)
Princess Agents (楚乔传)
Love triangle A: Yuwen Yue (宇文玥) - Chu Qiao (楚乔) - Yan Xun (燕洵)
Love triangle C: Yuan Chun (元淳) - Yan Xun (燕洵) - Chu Qiao (楚乔)
The Story of Yanxi Palace
Love triangle A: Qian Long (乾隆) - Wei Yingluo (魏璎珞) - Fucha Fuheng (富察傅恒)
Love triangle C: Chun Fei (纯妃) - Fucha Fuheng (富察傅恒) - Wei Yingluo (魏璎珞)
Rookie Agent Rouge (胭脂)
Love triangle A: Zhou Yuhao (周宇浩) - Lan Yanzhi (蓝胭脂) - Song Mian (宋勉)
Love triangle C: Feng Manna (冯曼娜) - Zhou Yuhao (周宇浩) - Lan Yanzhi (蓝胭脂)
As you can see through these seven shows, commonly the main love triangle is composed of two guys one girl, while the secondary “love triangle C” is composed of two girls and one guy.
Tumblr media
The love triangle in Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre (倚天屠龙记) and one of the few love triangles not to follow the two guys fighting for one girl triangle.
Characteristics of Love Triangles
Almost always, the two members vying for the affection in the triangle are foils to each other. Examples:
A Love So Beautiful
Jiang Chen (江辰) - mature, cold and extremely smart
Wu Bosong (吴柏松) - careless, kind and bad grades
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)
Xu Feng (旭凤) - arrogant and proud
Run Yu (润玉) - quiet and calm
Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre
Zhao Min (赵敏) - clever, manipulative
Zhou Zhiruo (周芷若) - “innocent, selfless” (I mean she technically is worse than Zhao Min, but that’s not the mask she puts on)
In school dramas you typically have the smart guy and the dumb girl pairing that eventually wins out:
A Love So Beautiful
Jiang Chen (江辰) and Chen Xiaoxi (陈晓希)
When We Were Young
Hua Biao (花彪) and Yang Xi (杨夕)
With You (最好的我们)
Yu Huai (余淮) and Geng Geng (耿耿)
Le Coup de Foudre (我只喜欢你)
Yan Mo (言默) and Zhao Qiaoyi (赵乔一)
Tumblr media
The love triangle in Meteor Garden 2019 (流星花园) - can you guess (if you’ve never watched this show) who the winning couple is?
You may also have the celebrity/popular/rich kid with a poor/hardworking person pairing:
Meteor Garden (流星花园) - Daoming Si (道明寺) and Shan Cai (杉菜)
Accidentally in Love (惹上冷殿下) - Situ Feng (司徒枫) and Chen Qingqing (陈青青)
My Little Princess (亲爱的, 公主病) - Lin Xingchen (林星辰) and Jiang Nianyu (江念雨)
Boss and Me (杉杉来了) - Feng Teng (封腾) and Xue Shanshan (薛杉杉)
Blossom in Heart (海棠经雨胭脂透) - Lang Yuexuan (朗月轩) and Gu Haitang (顾海棠)
In most dramas you also have the “cold” second/main male lead:
A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好) - Jiang Chen (江辰)
Princess Agents (楚乔传) - Yuwen Yue (宇文玥)
Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Gu Jian (顾剑)
Often there’s also the “childhood friend” aspect, and while that particular trope usually looses out there are some exceptions:
A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好) - Jiang Chen (江辰) - main lead
When We Were Young (人不彪悍枉少年) - Li Yu (李漁) - second lead
Heavenly Sword and Dragon Saber (倚天屠龙记) - Zhou Zhiruo (周芷若) - second lead
Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Gu Jian (顾剑) - second lead
Put Your Head on My Shoulder (致我们暖暖的小时光) - Fu Pei (傅沛) - second lead
In some dramas, almost any male character that appears is in love with the female lead:
Princess Agents (楚乔传) - female lead gets the love of:
Yuwen Yue (宇文玥)
Yan Xun (燕洵)
Yuan Song (元嵩)
Xiao Ce (萧策)
Journey of Flower (花千骨) - female lead gets the love of:
Bai Zihua (白子画)
Dongfang Yuqing (东方彧卿)
Meng Xuanlang (孟玄朗)
Startling With Each Step
Yin Zhen (胤禛)
Yin Si (胤禩)
Yin Ti (胤禵)
Yin E (胤䄉)
The male leads in Startling With Each Step/Scarlet Heart were lucky! They all got something with the female lead:
Male lead: Yin Zhen (胤禛) - is the true love/soulmate
Second male lead: Yin Si (胤禩) - gets her love in the first half
Third male lead: Yin Ti (胤禵) - gets to marry her
So What Differentiates the First and Second Male Leads?
Tumblr media
The love triangle in Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - can you guess (if you’ve never watched this show) who the winning couple is?
Typically the female lead just likes one of them and you can’t really give a reason for why the first male lead is better than the second one. However, some dramas do a good job of creating a jerk second male lead that makes the decision sufficiently easier for our female lead:
Princess Agents (楚乔传)
Second male lead Yan Xun (燕洵) kind of goes insane after his entire family is slaughtered and becomes obsessed over revenge. He looses all the qualities our female lead fell in love with him for.
Put Your Head on My Shoulder
Second male lead Fu Pei (傅沛) is a literal jerk. He takes our female lead’s love for granted and constantly abandons her when she needs help.
Bloody Romance (媚者无疆)
Second male lead Gong Zi (公子) treats people like chess pieces instead of real humans, and is willing to kill or manipulate anyone. Our female lead, being kind and unwilling to kill anyone, obviously would never fall for him.
My Little Princess (亲爱的,公主病)
Second male lead Zheng Chuyao (郑楚曜) is childish and immature. He is unwilling to confess his love for the female lead and constantly embarrasses her instead.
However, in most other cases, there is never a clear difference between who wins out in a love triangle. One similarity most share is that the first one to speak with the female lead wins out:
Bloody Romance (媚者无疆)
A Love So Beautiful
Accidentally in Love (惹上冷殿下)
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)
Blossom in Heart (海棠经雨胭脂透)
My Little Princess (亲爱的,公主病)
The Princess Weiyoung (锦绣未央)
The Story of Minglan
Lucky’s First Love
Tumblr media
The love triangle in Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜) - can you guess (if you’ve never watched this show) who the winning couple is?
Usually, the second male lead is the type of person who will forever watch over the female lead, caring for them are a subtle way. They are kinder, calmer, and perhaps more down to earth and human:
A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好) - Wu Bosong (吴柏松)
Meteor Garden (流星花园) - Hua Zelei (花泽类)
Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Gu Jian (顾剑)
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜) - Run Yu (润玉)
Accidentally in Love (惹上冷殿下) - Gu Nanxi (顾南锡)
When We Were Young (人不彪悍枉少年) - Li Yu (李漁)
Legend of Yunxi (芸汐传) - Gu Qishao (顾七少)
In cases of the above, the male lead is usually more cold or immature:
A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好) - Jiang Chen (江辰)
Meteor Garden (流星花园) - Daoming Si (道明寺)
Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Li Chengyin (李承鄞)
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)
Accidentally in Love (惹上冷殿下) - Situ Feng (司徒枫)
When We Were Young
Legend of Yunxi (芸汐传) - Long Feiye (龙非夜)
With second female leads, the similarities are rather obvious. They think they “deserve” the love of the male lead because they either grew up together or they have the same social standing:
Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Zhao Sese (赵瑟瑟)
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜) - Sui He (穗禾)
Legend of Yunxi (芸汐传) - Baili Mingxiang (百里茗香)
Love O2O (微微一笑很倾城) - Meng Yiran (孟逸然)
Blossom in Heart (海棠经雨胭脂透) - Long Mohua (龙莫婳)
Boss and Me (杉杉来了) - Yuan Lishu (元丽抒)
While the male lead often sees his excess admirers as “sisters” the female lead simply friend zones them.
Often, the male lead is also somewhat of a foil to the female lead:
Boss and Me (杉杉来了)
Xue Shanshan (薛杉杉) is innocent, a little stupid and cute
Feng Teng (封腾) is mature, intelligent and cold
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)
Jin Mi (锦觅) is unaware of love and a little stupid
Xu Feng (旭凤) is fully aware of his feelings and smarter
Goodbye My Princess (东宫)
Qu Xiaofeng (曲小枫) is innocent, kind and longs to go home
Li Chengyin (李承鄞) is cold, cruel and willing to do anything to keep Xiaofeng by his side
If you really just want to tell who’s the male lead, I’ll tell you an easy way to find out: he’s going to be played by the guy who’s more famous.
Tumblr media
The love triangle in Startling With Each Step (步步惊心) - can you guess who’s the first, second, and third male leads are?
So Why do Dramas Love Love Triangles?
Not to say TV shows have lazy writing or anything, but I feel like love triangles are an easy way to make both male and female leads realize their feelings. For instance, in Boss and Me, when our female lead (Shan Shan), sees our male lead (Feng Teng) dancing with another girl, she gets jealous. That makes her realize her feelings. Love triangles can also stretch out a TV show longer. A show that might only have 24 episodes can probably be stretched to more than 30 just due to love triangles.
On a level of characterization, when a character has many admirers, we, as watchers, can infer various things about them. Either they are one, amazingly beautiful or successful, or two, amazingly unique. For example, Chu Qiao in Princess Agents is strong and intelligent and for that reason, almost every guy she comes in contact with falls head over heels for her. This can show you that she is one of a kind in this world. Very few women in Princess Agents are as straightforward of their power, and so she really is unique. Xiaofeng in Goodbye My Princess has admirers because she is kind, innocent and selfless. Her bright and cheerful personality contrasts heavily with the political and dark atmosphere of the palace. So, when a character is entangled in many love triangles, you can infer there’s something special about them, and use that hypothesis to further infer something about the world in which the television show takes place.
Love triangles can also lead to more character development. In trying to get girl (or very rarely guy), the admirers must rise to become a better version of themselves. For example, in Meteor Garden, Daoming Si goes from being bratty and immature to being (relatively more) mature and understanding. In A Love So Beautiful, Jiang Chen goes from being a guy that’s cold and pushes people away to a guy who is more open about his feelings and love.
So, while in some shows, love triangles exist purely to elongate the show, in other shows we can use love triangles as a way to investigate the society we are plunged into at the start of the show.
Notes:
Would you say Go Go Squid (亲爱的, 热爱的) has a love triangle. That weird press lady likes the male lead, but she has like four scenes in total.
Here’s another thought I had about love: the ability of a character to admit their feelings often reflects upon how they’ve lived up til that point. Characters that do not understand their feelings could either have grown up isolated, never been in a relationship or have been fed a pill by their mother that takes away their ability to love. Characters who confess more easily were probably raised with loving parents in a loving household with loving friends surrounding them. Characters that understand their feelings at once know themselves well, and they can understand love. They either were raised in a loving family, or have been in love before. Love is a strange concept, sometimes we can’t handle it, and a lot of times we can’t understand it. TV shows feature humans (or at least things that look like humans) and so they deal with that aforementioned problem too.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kelenken is known from the Collón Curá Formation of Rio Negro Province, Argentina
Tumblr media
Physical Description: Kelenken was a Terror Bird, a type of large flightless terrestrial dinosaur from the late Cenozoic era, mostly in South America though a few reached North America when the continents collided. These were some of the top predators of their environments, built for chasing down food over long distances and then using their monstrous beaks to tear into flesh. Kelenken was one of the biggest members of the group, about two meters tall, and it had one of the largest known skulls of any bird, with fused bones to give it significant strength in its head and strong bire force. Its limbs were very robust, probably allowing for powerful movements of the legs. It had very small wings, as other Terror Birds did, and as such they probably weren’t used very much (think of the arms of Carnotaurus but the bird version). It had a long, winding neck, and its head was mostly beak. The beak was hooked at one end. It had a short tail, though we don’t have any feather impressions to know if it had any sort of feather decoration at the end of it. It would have had a huge bite force, and it possibly was a faster runner than other Terror Birds.
Diet: Kelenken primarily fed on large animals, especially faster moving ones such as hoofed mammals
Behavior: Kelenken probably spent most of its time chasing down its prey, though it’s uncertain how. It’s possible that it would chase down prey, catch it, and shatter its bones with its beak by repeatedly pecking at it (if… pecking is an accurate word to use with such a huge beak doing the pecking). It’s also possible that it would chase down smaller prey, pick it up, and shake it vigorously to break the prey’s back. It also possibly scavenged off of prey. Honestly, it seems likely that Kelenken would utilize all these strategies, and those not even come up with, to get any prey it could in an opportunistic fashion.
Tumblr media
By Michael B. H.
Kelenken was a fairly fast animal, and probably able to run for longer distances. As its environment was transitioning to an open grassland rather than a forest, this ability to run moreso than its earlier relatives was probably a direct adaptation for that open habitat. As such, Kelenken would have been extremely alert and on the lookout, both for food and for potential dangers, as it was tall enough to poke out above the grass and be visible to anything looking for it. Kelenken could fight with others of its species and against other animals both with its beak and with its feet, as it had very robust legs that would have been good for kicking, possibly very rapid and sharp kicks.
As only a few specimens of Kelenken are known, it’s difficult to determine its social behavior, especially since its closest living relatives are the Seriemas - a much smaller sort of dinosaur. Still, it’s possible to at least glean some behavioral patterns from seriemas. It’s possible that, like living seriemas, Kelenken only spent its time in pairs and small groups, which may have worked together cooperatively to take down larger mammalian sources of prey. It’s also possible that it may have been territorial over its nests, with breeding pairs avoiding other Kelenken and fighting with those they come across. This is all speculative, but would make sense given the environment and size of the animals. Kelenken, being a bird, almost decidedly took care of its young, though we cannot know if both parents took care of the young as in modern Seriemas, or if only one parent did the job at a time as in modern flightless birds. More fossils might be able to clear up this picture, though of course, it’s possible we’ll never know.
Tumblr media
By Ripley Cook
Ecosystem: Kelenken lived in the part of the Miocene that was the hottest, called the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum. This was immediately followed by drastic cooling. Thus, Kelenken lived in a uniquely warm period of the time in which Terror Birds dwelled. The formation was surrounded by extensive rivers and lakes, as basins formed in South America due to tectonic plates separating. This environment was a growing grassland, with the pampa overtaking the old deciduous forest that had once been there.
Kelenken is the only dinosaur known from the formation, but there were many different types of mammals present. There were the heavy-bodied hoofed mammals Protypotherium, Epipatriarchus, and Interatherium; the smaller hoofed mammals Hegetotherium and Pachyrukhos; the weird fast hoofed mammal related to Macrauchenia, Theosodon; armadillo relatives such as Proeutataus, Paraeucinepeltus, Peltephilus, Prozaedyus, and Stenotatus; the anteater relative Neotamandua; the rodents Galileomys, Guiomys, Maruchito, Microcardiodon, Neosteiromys, Protacaremys, Acarechimys, Alloiomys, Megastus, Neoreomys, Prolagostomus, and Stichomys; the new-world monkey Proteropithecia; the sabre-toothed marsupial Patagosmilus; and the extinct shrew opossum relative Abderites. There were also reptiles such as boa relatives like Waincophis, lizards, and turtles like Chelonoidis. There was also the horned frog Wawelia.
Kelenken probably would have hunted a variety of these things, especially the hoofed mammals, though some would have been too big for it to eat. It definitely would have been in direct competition with Patagosmilus, which probably would have specialized on different prey than Kelenken.
Other: Kelenken is most closely related to phorusrhacids such as Phorusrhacos and Titanis, two of the other more famous genera in this group.

A pied. Et là, Rey revendique l’héritage Skywalker. Gnhein ?
WTF !
