General thoughts and recall on the 2022 Osaka version of the Kimetsu no Yaiba Gotoge Koyoharu Exhibition, which is probably pretty similar to the Tokyo version from last year. No other images below the cut, as photos were only allowed in the above spaces, but you can scroll through photos of the gallery on the official homepage. There's wasn't a lot of previously unseen art or Taisho Secrets, nor was there much original colored artwork, but lots of thoughtful displays of the original manga pages.

The exhibit stated with the 3D display of a fictitious "Volume 0" cover, among all the other 23 manga covers. There were English translations for a lot of the section headings, but I can't remember them so I'll throw in simple translations here. The first section was about Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Kanao, and Genya, highlighting some of their introductory, iconic, and character growth moments. This section's focus was "Bonds: Brother & Sister, And Their Friends." While in general they were going for drama in the large wall displays, along the bottom there was a smaller border composed of a collection of derpy faces. I appreciated that greatly. At the end of this section, there was a small section for other people who support them, like at Mt. Sagiri and in the Swordsmith Village. There was also a small 3D statue of the image in which the Kamaboko members are all chibis stacked on top of each other. Better that image than any of them biting each other's heads.

Section Two had my favorite layout and design: "Demons: The Extremes of Humanity, The Extremes of Sorrow." This had our first 3D display as part of the wall decor, and in my humble opinion, it was the best. Truly gruesome detail in the Muzan flesh crawling up out of the wall and across the ceiling. What really got me was how this room had four pillars (no pun intended) with two different sides dedicated to some of the Upper Moons, with one side showing them at their worst as demons and the other side showing their sorrows as humans and their death scenes. Very nice touch. That led into the Infinity Fortress display, with the twangs of Nakime's biwa playing as she flashes in the displays. There's also a short display dedicated to Muzan and Kagaya's conflicting worldviews.

Section Three: "Pillars: The Absoluteness of Breath" also had fun 3D displays for each of the Pillars; my favorites were Mitsuri's and Sanemi's, because seeing the full length of Mitsuri's twisty sword was fun and I liked all the details of the wall getting torn to bits by the Wind Breath effects. These sections were also my favorites in the Pillar section for two kind of dumb reasons. In observing the original manga pages close up, I really liked the panel from Chapter 123 in which Mitsuri has just woken up and is declaring how precious the Demon Slayer Corp is to her and how she won't let any of them die as she strikes a pose with her sword in the air. Based on the leftover draft pencil marks, it seems this was one was the many places where cute characters were original drawn with longer limbs and had them shortened, but what I found more endearing than that? I really, really can't be sure about this, but it kiiiiinda looks like Genya was added in after the rest of the panel was drawn. His face was already funny, but now I find it even funnier. As for a nice memory in the Sanemi section, this was where I happened to enter at the same time as two ladies in "Shinazugawa Sanemi" and "Tomioka Giyuu" baseball shirts who whispered to each other, "IT'S HERE." This stuck out because talking was not allowed at the gallery, and when I turned my head, I saw that the lady in the Sanemi jersey had a big beetle toy pinned to her shoulder. Excellent touch, lady.

Section Four: "Ties: Betting It All" was just... rubbing in all the pain. Reminding us of all the loses. You know the cover of Chapter 180? Seeing that life size hurt, yo. Also, the amount of white-out used on the Seventh Form of Thunder Breath? Respect.

Section Five: "Time: The Breaking Dawn of A Thousand Years" was dedicated to the Sunrise Countdown arc and I was hyyyyyyped. It might just had been my impression, the draft pencil used seemed so much more heavy-handed through these pages. I tend to be quite heavy-handed with my sketches as well, so I felt this area strongly, but I also felt humbled for ever having spent over a decade of my life dreaming of being a manga-ka. I have too much respect and awe for this craft to ever find myself so foolish ever again. Also, there is now one particular variety of screen tone that now triggers me to get emotional after seeing the patterns of its use.

Quick interjection here to say that HOLY FUDGE, LOOK AT HOW ALL THE TATAMI ARE HAND-DRAWN. I thought those were screentones, but nooooooo, it's the black lines first and then whiteout on top of them, so they all fit the necessary angles exactly. AAAAAAAAAAAH.

Final Section: "Succession: Exceeding All The Months and Years" was dedicated to Tanjiro's internal battle with Muzan. Yeah, there was a 3D wisteria display. How could they not.

Omake: Obamitsu and Flame&Sound duo images like have already been leaked a lot, and The Legend of Zenitsu stuff, Chapter 205 stuff, and then I had to return to real life.

More info about her (some could just be general info about Mari)

She's the younger sister of a pretty popular great cook in the school.

She's an average grade student, though sometimes the tokito twins tutor her. She recently became friends with Genya while being tutored by them.

She can't bring herself to refuse favors, especially when she's guilt tripped to. Apparently, Yuichiro and Muichiro have been trying to teach her on how to refuse favors...

She is good friends with Makomo and Nezuko. Often she joins along with their silly activities.

Mari is pretty fast and agile, sometimes people asked her on why she didn't join the sports club.

Speaking of which, Mari is quite physically strong than she realizes. It is said that one time she was in a rush to meet up with her sister and when somebody tried to pull her to ask for a favor, she slapped them hard... She apologized later and did the favor....

She's usually the quiet and soft spoken girl, but her personality turns 180 with the people she really trusts.

Mari really has a bad time deciding on what to get, resulting in whoever is accompanying her to suggest to get it over with.

The reason why the tokito twins accompany her, especially when going home is that she gets lost when she has no directions mainly due to her getting easily distracted.

I heard from one of the students that Mari actually likes one of the twins!

Apparently, she made a love letter and blended it with the rest of the love letters she had to give to the twins. When asked about it, she would decline immediately, however, some people said they saw her writing a letter after school prior...

oh, got other "shounen for adults" type recs? also oof forgettin stories that seemed meaningful in the moment. that was a feel i didnt expect.

I don't have many shounen recommendations because it's not usually making stories for me. I do see the appeal in shounen for adults and I've even enjoyed it but I have less insight into what's happening over there.

I previously mentioned Devilman Crybaby, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Chainsaw Man (Naruto except good), and Dorohedoro (post apocalyptic dark fantasy slice of life) already. Those are all good and you should read/watch them. The rest of these were read a long time ago but I recall liking them. Keep in mind I never finish series, so I can't tell you if it remains good either.

Darwin's Game - Battle Royale murder-to-the-top shounen with an interesting evolution-based premise. It stood out because 1) the confront the misconception of what being "the fittest" entails and make that a core element which means 2) our protagonist has to *think* about what being the most fit to a situation requires. More often than not it means communicating, understanding different points of view and their compatibility with his, resource management, minimizing interpersonal conflict, and so on. His power is gun and yet that's his least interesting.

Nice guy MCs are tricky but he has a strong incentive to emphasize amicable relationships over violence (certain death).

Caveats:

don't read if you're grossed out by loli designs. There's no porn, but all the major female characters have a certain look.

there's a turning point where imo the MC's personality, the story, and the overall quality 180. If you think "why is he taking the death of this random guy he didn't seem to know that well so hard," you can stop and make up your own end.

Talentless Nana - not sure this really counts as "adult shounen" but I liked it so much I spammed five discord servers with the first chapter when it came out. I relished every last "holy FUCK" I earned. See for yourself!

Caveat: I hear it ends kind of sloppy but can't confirm. I will say it felt like the writer didn't have a concrete conclusion in mind so I'm inclined to believe it.

Kumo desu ga, nani ka - this is a seinen and frankly it's unlikely you don't already know about the spider girl isekai but recommendation lists should have at least three suggestions and it fits the shounen vibe.

It's interesting that all the images I'm seeing looking up the title are so...kawaii? I can't even say cute. Pink, goofy, smiling chibi spiders. Never saw the anime, kept up with the manga until her second or third interaction with humans, so maybe the anime differs or at I'm remembering wrong.

Kumoko is heavily insinuated (but never quite confirmed) to be a victim of high school harassment and she seems to go out of her way to not think about what happened to her. Did she get chased in front of a truck? Did she commit suicide? Who knows, she doesn't want to talk about it.

She isekais as the weakest spider at the bottom of a dungeon filled with F to S-tier bosses who intentionally and unintentionally almost kill her. She gets to do the fun video game skill system/achievement lock thing HOWEVER! there is one skillset that's intentionally not explained or even given a name. "Don't rank up in that skill" is the most she's given. So of course it's ding, ding, ding flying straight to the top, maxing out the forbidden skill that continues to not be explained as she accidentally hits its requirements and tells herself it's probably nothing.

I never found out what it is but I've assumed it's something related to losing your humanity, some kind of unforgivable evil that can't be named. That would fit with the overall thing of celebrating kumoko's hard won battles and clever thinking with much stronger opponents but also in the back of your mind it's like huh this teen girl sure has been trapped in a pitch black cave miles under the earth gagging down roaches and centipedes, gradually accepting that being burned with acid or losing some legs is normal life, always thinking about her next kill, and just generally seems to forgotten about being a human at all, for plausibly years; I wonder if this could become problematic in the future.

Caveats:

I stopped reading after a while because the battles were getting dull

I assume the girl posing on all the covers but it never comes up. She takes up 50% of the page, why?? Even if it is her, it's not even relevant

a new finnish horror movie just came out (i haven't gone to see it yet but i might!), and i saw a review about it mentioning international interest and foreigners apparently think that the finnish language makes a film extra creepy because it sounds like an intimidating fantasy language. i'll take that as a compliment

Appearance: Tetsue is a curvaceous young woman with a slightly toned and muscular build. She has long black hair and dark gray eyes. She puts her hair in a ponytail for when she’s in the forge and in a braid for formal events. There is a small scar on her left cheek. Usually, she wears a blue komon kimono with green flower patterns. Her nagoya obi is green. She also wears white tabi and standard zori. For formal events, she wears a green irotomesode kimono with a design of blue lotuses and a blue obi.

Personality: Tetsue first shows herself to be a diligent and quiet young woman who often kept to herself. She appears to be aloof, especially to outsiders and recent cult members. Despite her reserved exterior, Tetsue is a kind, outgoing, and hardworking young woman who loves her father and her fellow neighbors. She enjoys talking to Kouga, a monk from the monastery, along with other blacksmiths and women her age. She takes great pride in her blacksmith works and would be enraged if someone would carelessly ruin them. She also has a protective side of her. As a child, she was more expressive with her emotions and talkative.

History: Tetsue was born to a poor couple in the Saitama Prefecture, who was in heavy debt to a cruel landlord. After her mother’s death when she was 20 months old, her father, Koushi, ran away with her when he learned that his landlord planned to sell her off for money. When arriving in the Eternal Paradise, he begged for the sanctuary in the temple. Douma, seeing their plight, took them in. Koushi is happy again as he works with the cult members while Tetsue was enjoying her time there. One day, when she was with her father collecting wood, his former landlord found him and tried to force him back. When they ran away, the landlord stabbed him, causing permanent damage to his left arm. Tetsue’s cries can be heard by the cult members and the landlord was subdued by them. Tetsue and Koushi were taken to the infirmary. The cult members had the landlord tied to a tree for “judgment”. She was allowed to stay in the temple for a while with other children her age. As her father recovers in the infirmary, Tetsue took interest with the forge and its blacksmiths. When Inosuke was a baby, she was entrusted with his care whenever Douma had to perform his duties or Kotoha meditating. As she gets older, she becomes more skillful in her blacksmith works, which includes creating tools and weapons. This leads her to create her own iron war fans and learn tessenjutsu. In recent years, she has been open to possibly getting married. She is rather hesitant about it as she worries for her father. When Inosuke announced his pilgrimage, she was worried for him as he never ventured outside of the surrounding forest. However, Gracious Founder ensures her that he’ll be safe.

the way tanjiro zenitsu and inosuke went straight from rengoku to uzui as their hashira mentor is so hilarious. like it went from a beloved teacher who doted on and praised them regularly to a substitute teacher who barged in claiming he was “god” and then sold them to one direction.
