“You don’t know til you try,” John’s voice is seductive as he slides his full, moist lips over the absurdly phallic confectionary gifted by their newest trade partners. John’s sultry look isn’t lost on Rodney, but it’s wasted on him.
Rodney’s into guys in the sense that he had three boyfriends in college to whom he was every bit as sexually attracted as he was to his two girlfriends.
Which is to say, not at all.
The inconvenient problem is his enormous crush on John.
The flirty major’s sex incarnate. Rodney’s smart enough to know it could never work out.
The damn cactus is unravelling what was left of Rodney’s resolve. Sheppard’s obvious disapproval of his proposal plans hadn’t helped any.
Sure, it’s a puny ring. He doesn’t want Katie thinking he can offer more than he’s able.
“I've been kind of doting on it,” she fondles the phallic plant. “And it just gets bigger and bigger...”
Oh. That was… not subtle. They’ve been dating two years; Rodney figured the absence of sex was a good sign.
When he thinks about it more carefully, he acknowledges a complete absence of anything.
He’s been spending all his spare time with Sheppard.
“Did you take the Viagra?” Jennifer asks, trailing her hand over his bulge. “I think it’s helping.”
Rodney’s cock is rock hard, but it doesn’t make him any more interested. It feels like somebody else’s body.
She is the first person he ever said the word asexual to.
“See? medicine can fix anything.”
“What if I don’t want or need fixing?” Rodney says, angry. “What if it’s just who I am?”
He storms out. Stays away till the blue pill wears off.
“I’m sorry,” she says later. “I don’t want to change you.”
They both know that’s a well-intentioned lie.
John appreciates extra time with him. Rodney wishes he could offer more. Succumbs to smooshing against him after too many beers.
“Did it ever occur to you we’d be made for each other?” John says, one night on the pier.
“If it wasn’t for my sexual orientation,” Rodney replies. About time he voiced it.
“Sure, but if you weren’t straight, and I actually liked sex… we’d be so compatible.”

Here’s a good post from the National Kiwi Hatchery - yes, kiwi do bark. They make quite a wide variety of sounds including mating calls, grunting and hissing.
