Hair: Strands of spun moonlight are cropped just past her jawline; styled with a few braids with occasional charms or ribbons woven throughout. Likely her most recognizable feature. In dark enough settings, it can shed low light. Eyes: Like frozen pools; her right eye is a sharp blue, and her left is a clear lavender. Skin: Ghostly pale, dotted with occasional beauty marks. Tattoos/scars: Graced with stretch marks but beyond that no notable scars.

Parents: Unknown to her, deceased. Perfectly nice people who, through no fault of their own, died. Siblings: N/A Grandparents: Unknown to her, deceased. Also perfectly nice people. In-laws and Other: A great-many-times-over Aunt named Odile. A not-so-nice person. Pets: Rou, a large Karakul who often travels with Odette. Three ewes: Pomme, Poire, and Peche.

S K I L L S

Abilities: - Odette is a beacon to lost souls, ghosts, and spirits. They flock to her and under the umbrella of her influence their forms are altered into that of moths. They cling to her, calling for aid which she lends as best she can. Odette is a psychopomp, she guides the dead without judgment. She can see, hear, and otherwise interact with these lost and stuck souls. She has a custom job fusion of WHM (Conjury)/PLD.

- A strong defensive fighter, Odette prefers her shield and conjurer’s cane to the sword that hangs at her side. She wields her shield well, trusting in it fully to keep herself and her loved ones safe. When she plants her cane, the river rises.

- Kulning is an ancient form of herding calls used over long distances. Odette learned the skill in her youth and uses it still, calling in her small flock of Karakul at her home. Is this important enough to put here? Probably not, it’s just an additional fun fact! For you!

Hobbies: Reading, gardening, knitting (badly), and exploration. She also plays piano and harp.

Most of the time if she is riding, she rides Rou, her most loyal Karakul. Been Arrested: No, but she should have been.

Hair: Dark brown hair is worn practically. Short with a hacked at fringe. She doesn’t do much with it, thinking of it as more of a hindrance than a tool to express herself with.

Eyes: Watchful, hooded, hawklike. Like burning coals with none of the heat.

Skin: Pale white, covered in freckles.

Tattoos/scars: No tattoos. A gnarly scar at her left collarbone, and follows through on her back. A smattering of other, less important scars.

F A M I L Y

Parents: Her father is deceased, aided by gravity. She does not speak of nor to her mother who still lives in the Brume. Their names are unimportant.

Siblings: N/A.

Grandparents: Long dead, likely insufferable judging by how their children turned out.

In-laws and Other: No In-laws to speak of. She has many romantic entanglements that usually end messily. So far, her relationship with Ibant is the only one to have stuck.

She and Gerry, one of her Lady’s wards, have an on-again-off-again toxic yuri relationship that will eventually settle into a steady friendship or explode in an awesome and destructive display.

She respects and, to some degree, loves her Lady.

A’vyra is the nearest thing to a friend she has outside the House. Not that Prudence would ever utter such a thing aloud.

The rest of the House’s odd assortment of characters are kept at a distance. Prudence is fully aware of her prickly personality and the strength of her bite. These things serve her well; she will not dull them to appease others, so she does not let others in. For their own good, of course.

Pets: No. Prudence technically owns a Chocobo, a gift from her Lady, but Bird is not a pet. Bird is a stalwart companion.

Abilities: Prudence is a capable young woman. A skilled machinist with a sharp eye it is rare for her to miss. She knows her carbine better than the skin of her hands, knows the bark of it as her voice.

Her duties as a retainer have sent Prudence to the far corners of many maps. She’s resourceful for all the traveling, with a genuine willingness to embrace local customs. She can chameleon her way through social situations; smoothing the barbs of her generally terrible personality and avoiding unnecessary conflict on the road.

Hobbies: Tinkering, fishing, painting.

Grandparents: Briar knows nothing about Ciro's parents, other than they died some years before he was born. Saule's father died before he was born. His grandmother died when he was under two so he has no memories of her. In-laws and Other: As far as Briar knows, his only living blood relative is E-Rani-Tek, Ciro's older brother and a Padjali pariah. Pets: Briar has a terrible habit of adopting many a creature, although if they are wild-born his goal is always to return them to the wild. Hair: A messy mop of dusty rose and dark red hair. The messy nature really shows just how busy he is. The feathers he braids into his hair are feathers from his lover Vrtra.

Eyes: Originally evergreen, the light poisoning turned his eyes a bright emerald, and now, thanks to joining with Azem, he has one orange eye and one green eye. Both his pupils are slit thanks to Vrtra's blood coursing through him.

Skin: Pale and covered in cream scales from Vrtra's blood that keeps him alive.

Tattoos/Scars: A red dragon in a tea cup sits on his left shoulder, a reminder of a friend who fell in the Calamity 5 years ago. He has scars all over his body, scars from his top surgery and scars from battles won and lost.

Parents: Biological mother has passed, his biological father lives in the Firmament in Ishgard. He was raised but a lovely Hyur couple called Marie and Fenris Furor. They are his entire world, he is working on his relationship with his biological father still.

Siblings: His adoptive sister Kaolin! Marie and Fenris' daughter!

Grandparents: N/A. He never met either set of his grandparents, hes not even sure if they are alive or not.

In-Laws/Others: Oh boy, lmao, he is married to both Vrtra and Estinien. So he has Alberic and all the remaining greatwyrms as well as Middie in his ear constantly lmao nothing worse then a father in law in your ear all the time!! He also has two kids as of 6.5! Harklan, his oldest son and Altan his youngest daughter!

Abilities: A skilled culinarian, there is nothing he cannot make. He is also an excellent Paladin and has been blessed by Halone (Oathbreaker), Hydaelyn (Hydaelyn's Chosen) and currently by Vrtra (Vrtra's Valiant).

Hobbies: He loves to read, bake and cook, shop and travel. And nothing brings him more joy then just curling up with his family and spending the evening reading or cooking with them!

Trigun directly informs the character designs for Kekkai Sensen/Blood Blockade Battlefront

I’ve been thinking about a fun little meta for awhile about how much of the vibes and character style from Trigun translated over to Kekkai Sensen/Blood Blockade Battlefront. Taking my brain off of hardcore Trigun for a bit let’s have some fun with Yasuhiro Nightow’s character design and how he likes to recycle and reform them.

The Japanese DVD box set volume 3 shows my three favorite charas in a Norman Rockwell The Saturday Evening Post parody. Steven drives a car while Chain snacks and K.K. screams excitedly.

The fact that the animation creative team went in this direction meant they were really having fun with the anime, but let’s dig into how Trigun translated more to Blood Blockade Battlefront.

Characters from Trigun and how they relate to Blood Blockade Battlefront

Vash the Stampede = K. K.

That’s right, our pacifist gunslinger is re imagined as the Bratatat Mom, code name K. K.

The character design has the same red duster jacket with tight black clothing underneath. K.K. even has some finger less gloves for her ease of operating either her sniper rifle or her handgun. She can also use two handguns at the same time while fighting. They are tall and lanky, have blonde hair and both can be bubbly at times to cover up how they are really feeling. Vash’s unique sunglasses became an eye patch for K. K. and she will also cover her eyes with sunglasses to not attract attention to the right eye as well. Unlike Vash, K.K. is willing to kill a target if necessary and has the most awesome husband ever and two sons. I very much like her character and wish she were a more involved member of the B3 cast but by her nature, is a bit more of a loner but seen as quite powerful. She is critical of the patriarchy and has a real axe to grind with Steven who is closest to her and still different from her; this is due to the fact that they are the two senior members of the team over thirty and made different choices in their personal/private lives.

Meryl Stryfe = Leonardo Watch

The very detail oriented and short fused insurance adjuster Meryl is now Leonardo a budding journalist who by sheer luck joins Libra. Considering that Meryl ended the manga as a reporter it makes sense for this to be Leo’s starting place.

Both characters can be quick to snap out a remark of shock or annoyance, are the shortest adult member of the cast and have short dark hair. Meryl’s hair was black with a purple undertone and so is Leo’s with more purple. By B3 Back 2 Back, Leo’s hair picks up a more red tone which eventually translates into the anime adaption. These characters frequently point out how absurd the events around them are while the rest of the cast calmly accepts things at face value. Unlike Meryl in the manga, Leo is the reader’s entry point into the city and plays a role very similar to the anime version of her. Like Vash, Leo is not the type of character to take a life and instead serves as support for the rest of the team early on in his time with Libra. Both respect life and even though we know that Meryl has shot individuals in the manga and implied to have in the anime, she takes it very seriously and treats it with due respect.

Milly Thompson = Klaus V. Reinherz

The somewhat ditzy, honest and emotionally mature Milly is now seen in the character of Klaus; a true gentleman and total tank of a character. Klaus towers over Leo, the same way as Milly is considerably taller than Meryl.

Klaus, gives zero fucks what others think about him, has no bias based on gender, species, affiliation, race etc etc. He’s one of the most genuine characters who could crush opponents and enjoys a fine cup of tea just like Milly. They both have more casual looks with ties, suspenders/vest and dark pants. At first, Klaus was a decent character in my opinion but as the anime progressed, he grew on me and grew on me until realizing that I really do like him and his well balanced approach to life. He enjoys simple pleasures in life like taking the subway, playing chess and/or prosfair and watering all the plants at the Libra main office. Klaus is always there to accept Leo and encourage him along the way. He never takes his strength for granted and can’t say no to others.

Also like Milly, Klaus is emotionally mature and works to help others calm down in sticky situations or encourage them when stuck. He is frequently paired with Leo who greatly respects him and learns from him. He also does not appear to have a driver’s license meaning he either ends up in the same car as Leo or trying to fit himself on Leo’s small motorbike.

Nicholas D. Wolfwood = Chain Sumeragi

The amazing werewolf of Libra, Chain is the first version of Wolfwood in B3. Her character design is female Wolfwood other than her black vs tan shoes.

She occasionally has a small firearm, but was a terrible shot to not become an elite assassin and instead wanted to remain in intelligence. Chain has the some of Wolfwood’s more juvenile pranks or remarks especially when Zapp is involved with her. Chain is sarcastic, but it is targeted at one individual - Zapp Renfro and only Zapp. It appears since Zapp and Leo are frequently together along with Zed, she’ll tease Leo a little but does not hurt him when she lands on him or sits on his head, instead only giving out pain to Zapp. She has a high alcohol tolerance and will help out characters but doesn’t like for them to realize it at the time. Like when Leo’s wallet got stolen from him in ‘Day In Day Out’ but she sticks it in his shirt collar as opposed to giving it back to him. Chain is the sort of character who doesn’t want to be recognized and instead hang back and do things quietly.

Nicholas D. Wolfwood = Steven A. Starphase

The names alone show that these two characters are directly related. Yet, Steven has a real middle name, Alan, as opposed to the D being whatever Yasuhiro Nightow felt it should be when interviewed in the moment.

Early on in the first volume of the manga, Steven also goes without his characteristic yellow tie with a dark blue dress shirt making him look even more like Wolfwood. They both frequently are shown with a hand or two in their pockets and can be quite charismatic and friendly. They have foodie tastes and respect well prepared meals. Both men also have to deal with darker situations which their partner[Vash]/boss [Klaus] would not deal with. Wolfwood did not hesitate to kill opponents of Vash to prevent further damage while, Steven will make sure that certain problems disappear before they reach the rest of Libra. One could say they move in the shadows, but Wolfwood is more of a character who deals with things directly, while Steven has the right person or party on speed dial. Wolfwood worked within the system of the Eye of Michael making him somewhat legit while Steven is the direct contact to the HLPD, FBI, governmental bodies, and likely organizations that straddle grey areas. The fact that Steven will go through proper channels indicates a greater respect for the rule of law and civil society only moving into shady areas when absolutely necessary.

Therefore, with the basic character design and personalities it is pretty logical that we get certain pairings to generate enjoyable dynamics.

Meryl & Milly - Leo & Klaus. The small hardworking realist with a quick temper is teamed up with the honest, occasionally ditzy giant. Neither character looks down on the other and they are able to learn about themselves and others through their interactions. Without Leo, Klaus would be unable to seal Blood Breeds. Without Klaus, Leo would not learn to accept his guilt and gain confidence in himself and helping others. Leo frequently doesn’t see his own strength since it is through his relationships and not physical force like Klaus demonstrates.

The size difference alone is exactly like Meryl and Milly here! Leo is the one who is more than aware of what Zapp is planning to do quickly as events unfold but Klaus never even realizes that he’d been played by Zapp. The two have genuine hearts and respect of all life (that isn’t trying to kill them at least).

One color panel for the manga which really captures B3 well and how close Klaus and Leo are is the following. They are likely relaxing or killing time at the office enjoying the quiet. Leo and Klaus are playing video games while Sonic watches next to them. Meanwhile, the Luddite that he is, Steven loosens his tie while reading the daily paper.

Steven isn’t even paying attention to what they are doing. But Sonic is. It is clear that Leo and Klaus are having fun and building on their relationship with each other.

Vash & Wolfwood = K.K. & Steven. The two senior members of Libra frequently are teamed up together even though K.K. is annoyed by Steven (likely because he never lets her take time off to be with her family). Steven frequently tries to play it cool with his calm demeanor while K. K. likes to tease him due to his rather academic approach to things ‘Dr. Steven-sensei’. Despite their vocal bickering, the two work quite well together.

In Trigun, it is Wolfwood who is annoyed that he’s assigned to deal with Vash. In B3 it is K. K. who always scoffs at her partner Steven. It sort of makes sense, Steven with his Esmeralda Blood Freeze is cold and calculating in his actions but frequently must get relatively close to his opponent.

In contrast, K. K. literally shoots electrified bullets and will do support for Steven. Their tension also likely comes from the fact that K. K. has a ‘typical’ family life with her husband and two sons to protect and take care of. The opposite is the bachelor life of Steven in his lonely loft apartment with a great kitchen, stylish decor and no actual friends outside of work besides his housekeeper. However, they are incredibly similar, angry at themselves for enjoying things in a brief instant related to their family or friends which ended poorly.

Wolfwood & Milly = Steven & Klaus

The Trigun anime really makes this a more important aspect of their character than the manga; Wolfwood and Milly work together more than once to help people out of a tight spot, think of the episode ‘Escape from Pain’ or the entire manga battle between Wolfwood and Midvalley when Milly steps in to help Wolfwood out. However, the partnership between Steven & Klaus is much deeper than Wolfwood & Milly. Klaus 100% trusts Steven to get all their ducks in a row and to make sure all of the logistics of Libra are working. At the same time Steven understands the pressure that Klaus puts on himself and tries to lighten his load even if Klaus is oblivious to it.

The two play chess when Steven is first introduced and Klaus listens to Steven’s concerns about having Leo join Libra.

When Leo is kidnapped, it is Steven who immediately is worried about Klaus.

I like how these two characters have such great rapport and trust between each other. Steven comments on how Klaus made a joke, something he’d likely say with his quick wit and dry sense of humor.

We seen in ‘Bloodline Fever’ that Steven completely trusts that Klaus will arrive on time to seal the Elder Blood Breed that he and K. K. only had to hold for four minutes. It also shows that K. K. trusts Klaus as she was his escort to meet the Alterworld mafia don and based on her comments, she’s done this many times for Klaus.

Steven trusts that Klaus can hold out against the one vampire from the missing hospital long enough for Leo to determine his name and result in his sealing.

The fact that the two of them can communicate when all they need is a single quip from Steven in reply to Leo’s answer and demolish an opponent is incredible.

What I find most refreshing about their relationship is that Steven, the older individual does not mind to be the second in command. He’s a social enough person with ample skills to network and manage people effectively and does have more experience in the matter. However, he also knows that he is not the right leader for Libra and finds purpose in his role on the team. Klaus is too likely to be led on or lied to by others and Steven is streetwise enough to avoid or to use those people for their own benefit. Klaus is the all to trusting Dad while Steven is the Mom making sure the kids don’t fight at dinner.

I also like the fact that when their main office needed security upgrades, the two of them accidentally invaded, Leo, Zapp (and Zed’s) sacred diner space.

Nothing like finding your bosses in your home away from home Leo!

Honestly, I could go on about this for way longer but I’ll stop it here. Klaus and Steven are great and I love them.

Wolfwood & Wolfwood = Chain & Zapp? & unrequited crush on Steven

The one character who I have a harder time pairing in a sort of Trigun fashion is Chain Sumeragi. Even though she is female Wolfwood, the character who she has the most dynamics with is Zapp Renfro. Which would make her a sort of positive Wolfwood traits meets all negative Wolfwood traits plus manwhore. Zapp smokes, drinks, gambles and fucks as much as possible. He has the vices that Wolfwood had (save for the sex) and definitely exists to be a foil with Leo, Zed and well, most of the cast. Yes, she has a crush on Steven, but the man is absolutely out to lunch on the matter. In the anime, he’s oblivious to the entire protocol to undilute Chain and how it relates to him. Then again, if someone screamed and threw a chair at you resulting in injury, it would be hard to call that attraction or affection. Terrifying would be the most accurate word. I’ve only read the first two volumes of the manga in English and it is clear that she has eyes for him, but again, he gives off the vibes that work comes first.

Since Zapp hangs out with Leo frequently, Chain ends up in their mischief as well, wanting to help them out but seeming too cool for school. I don’t know if the anime upped the petty fights between Chain and Zapp more, but it def has that enemies to friends (?) dynamic going on. I’m curious to see how things unfold in the manga as I read it.

The fact that B3 Back 2 Back has the following covers seems to indicate a stronger Klaus & Steven, Chain & Zapp, and K. K. & Steven dynamics.

Furthermore, there is only the B3 volume 10 cover where Chain and Steven are next to each other, but Steven’s back is to her. It seems any potential Chain and Steven relationship is likely not in the cards. In group covers, Steven and K. K. are next to each other most frequently based on their skills as a two person team.

All in all, I love how elements of Trigun made their way into B3. It is fun to look at all the angles, from the physical character design, to their personalities and their relationships with each other. I’ve been a fan of Trigun for over twenty years, so it is hard to say if B3 is better than it - but, I do appreciate the realistic adult relationships, doubts, fears and goals of it more so that Trigun. The sitcom feel to B3 really feels relaxing and I enjoy the rambling stroll through the city with this quirky cast of characters.

With my disappointment in Stampede, I can at least laugh and cry at how the B3 anime and manga really capture the elements that made Trigun so likable to me in the first place. And that is all I can ask for - another zany series with lovable characters that you can’t help but root for.

For being such a deathseeker, you ever think Ayin uses K Corp serum, TT2 Protocol, and the body replacement insurance technology to get right up close and personal dancing with death without actually dying? Hanging yourself, cutting or stabbing yourself, shooting yourself, overdosing, drowning and other forms of death become non-permanent from those two technologies alone. Sadly, a lot of self-harm comes from a place of using physical pain as an emotional relief and Ayin has tons of emotional baggage equating to tons of physical pain seeking behaviors as a horrible coping mechanism.

Since he's a wing CEO he has the wealth and influence to gain access to them with no problem, maybe even new and upcoming revival technology such as Dante's own singularity, so he can just kill himself and come back to work the next day. Even if there was a general Head taboo against resurrection, I'm sure Ayin can either use his power/wealth/position as a wing CEO to bend the rules like how Dante's powers exploit a loophole. That plus I doubt the Head would be happy to hear their main enery provider collapsing because it became leaderless.

The Head will be disapproving but ultimately permissive of it so long as he pays tax or stays away from outright breaking the rule or offering it to other people. Meanwhile other CEOs will either be wholly disapproving, worried at how Ayin's death could dissolve his company and throw the Wings into another Smoke War or completely supportive and cheering wildly when he kills himself multiple times as they race to either usrup his company or steal Enkephalin and other company resources for easy pickings. Other people who know like Dias are probably concerned and/or confused and probably think Ayin is a masochistic lunatic.

Meanwhile Ayin if allowed to self-harm or kill himself multiple times, starts considering it as a stress relief hobby alongside drinking and just considers it a little quirk or unimportant vice of his. Just like how Alfonso is so eager to collect snuff films of even her own citizens dying for some reason.

Come on, did you really think I'd see such as ask and go "actually, no, I'm sure Ayin is a responsible man who searches for various self-help methods"? It's Ayin we're talking about, of course I think that he danced with death very, very closely.

In fact...I'm inclined to agree with you here; I'm sure Ayin, reclusive, alone, and suffering from severe PTSD and guilt, likely found solace in...experimenting on how much pain he could inflict on himself, a way to self-flagellate to the extreme, and it's actually what I wanted to hint at when I included his scene with Roland in Chapter 11; Ayin's time likely did a lot of things to him, but most notable among them was that it allowed him to indulge in harming himself to the most extreme lengths, and yet I don't think he'd have actually fully committed and died; the risks associated with that were too grave, and he likely didn't want to find solace in death. He wanted to remain alive and carry the marks of the things he did to himself, so I assume he wouldn't use fully refined K-Corp technology, either; just enough to heal everything he caused to himself, but not enough to remove scarring. A sort of permanent reminder of what he did to himself, which in turn is a reminder of the guilt and repressed emotions he carried within him.

"Oh boy, I can't wait to see Ayin resolve his emotional trauma healthily and without resorting to grievously harming himself!" is not a phrase any Ayin fan has ever used in their life...as evidenced by the piles of Ayin death and torture asks I keep receiving, keheh.

Hello! Once again, my silly little body is receiving A Trial, nay, An Organized Revolt via its local population (Gut Bacteria Cohort and The Immune Lobby) and while I’m normally like “yaaay I love rebellion against The Man, tear them limb from limb” I am. Unfortunately. The Man. They also hired mercs or like, sent the gut bacteria to stage a simultaneous uprising in my lungs??? Which had!!! NOTHING to do with this!!! Another Thing Wrong With The Former Gifted Kid Discourse, Since I Can't Stop Thinking About It:

people have such an unhelpful tendency to universalize their own experience when talking about the plights and struggles about Gifted Kids™—and what they are talking about is not necessarily invalid, but they're more often talking about their individual responses to their particular schools' policies. This Is Not A Systemic Analysis. it's helpful; i sympathize with you. But You Are Not Dismantling The Inequities by saying this or that happened At Your School when you were a child, and it affected you this or that way because of Who You Are.

example. i always see people talking about neurodivergence in this conversation, which is actually helpful in spotlighting how the Gifted Kid discourse often glosses over such complex intersectional issues. you can talk about how you were Gifted & Neurodivergent and how those experiences lead you to future disappointment. this is, i must stress, valid. but your analysis of your own life Is Not A Systemic Analysis. your experience alone will never speak for how the educational system and trends in policy among schools across the united states affect ALL neurodivergent people negatively because there are neurodivergent people who are Different From You. not to mention that when people point out that very often "Gifted Kid" usually correlates with some degrees of privilege, people push back and go nooooo I'm neurodivergent. people across all other marginalized identities who are systemically disadvantaged by the educational system can be neurodivergent. this does not make you, initially, when you were as a young Kid determined to be Gifted, NOT also in fact privileged.

if you are not ready to discuss experiences that were different from your own growing up, you aren't really engaging in the discourse of how to improve public education in the united states. it's a diiii-verse country we live in. not only in the ways we traditionally think of. when we think of "marginalized" or "oppressed" people, some specific and historically significant groups come to mind. when it comes to advantages that set up a child for future educational success, these broad categories often leave gaps because they lead people to generalizations, and ultimately, fatalism.

but there's really so much hope in early childhood education if we were to make things more equitable, ie like i always say UNIVERSAL PRE-K. these kids who are determined as "gifted" more often than not were just from more enriched home environments that prepared them for learning how to read, write, and do math. it's often not special innate abilities that leads to differences in outcomes for different students, but That's How The Kids Interpret It When Some of Them Are Called "Gifted." they're more often than not, not doing something that's truly exceptional or precocious for their age. they're displaying signs of age-appropriate development, when often, the kids who may be lagging behind them skill-wise just Haven't Practiced Those Skills As Much.

so yes, that's why there's a correlation in things like upper- and middle-class white kids being seemingly more successful in school (and more commonly deemed "gifted") at a young age. it's from privilege. it's not even just the implicit biases of their educators already working in their favor for their race and class. it's the fact that being more privileged, generally, means their family and parents had all of their basic needs provided for. they had more time to read with you. they could buy more development-promoting toys. they probably had better mental health to cope with the demands of child-rearing. if they suffered chronic or sudden physical health issues, they were insured. privileged children are usually less exposed at a younger age to the harshnesses of this world, as every child should be. ALL of these little advantages build up, in terms of what a child can be provided with before they go to school. anything that's going wrong in a child's family system can negatively impact them without them even being old enough to understand it.

you may not think of yourself as Privileged. you might prefer to think of yourself as Gifted. Gifted is so nice, even if it's demoted to Former Gifted. at one point you were told you were superior and it felt really good. and You, reader, i do not know You. i'm not calling You privileged, even if you are! hell, everyone's privileged in some way. i am at the point in the post where for transparency's sake i think i should say I Could Be What Some People Call "Former Gifted". i was called smart as a kid and given special homework sometimes etc. i'm not calling any Former Gifted people stupid for not realizing this either. what i mean is that this kids Are Not Usually Actually Gifted. this is a compliment given overwhelmingly to children who were just simply not deprived. when people say they were once Gifted, they're more often than not saying I Had The Early Opportunities To Learn Everyone Should Have, But Doesn't. this doesn't make you an outlier. It Might Just Be A Sign of Privilege.

York Pa. race riots sparked by decades of discrimination

As the story goes, the deadly York race riots of 1969 started when a Black youth claimed a gang doused him with gasoline.

That story proved to be false – he burned himself playing with lighter fluid.

But that set the stage for a rumble between a white gang and Black youths.

And then a Black youth, Taki Nii Sweeney, was standing with a police officer when a shotgun blast struck him.

All that said, the racial unrest really didn’t start in mid-July 1969.

You could say it started with the Conspiracy of 1803 when Black people in the country were barred from entering York and the movements of African Americans in York were severely curtailed. That reportedly came after a perceived unfair conviction of a Black woman caused a series of protest arsons by Black residents.

Or it could have been in 1863 when the son in the prominent Black family, the Goodridges, was convicted of rape, a county court sentence that the governor later reversed. That pardon came at a cost to the family and Pennsylvania. Imprisoned Glenalvin Goodridge, a pioneering photographer recognized by the Smithsonian today, was ordered to leave the state.

It could have come in the mid-1930s when neighborhoods, homes to many Black people newly arrived from the South, were redlined. That federal government policy made it more difficult for those in York neighborhoods designated on a map with red ink to secure homeownership.

The point is that the riots came after decades of racial oppression. In fact, discriminatory practices were the leading factors in a type of combustible equation as the cause for the York race riots.

Here is that calculation that I put forth in 2009: Long racial oppression + neglect of services for low-income people + unfit mayor + boiling U.S. urban racial environment + K-9 Corps (as a catalyst) = York riots of 1968-69.

A look at the 1960s

We’ll take a snapshot of just one decade, the 1960s in York County, to understand how these factors played out.

The decade begins in November 1961 when Republican John L. Snyder was elected York’s mayor by a 9,197-8,335 vote over Democrat Henry Leader in a city with a Democratic majority. This election was particularly important because it was the first under the strong-mayor system that gave Snyder relatively more power, particularly in police oversight, and veto power over the City Council’s actions.

You could say a lot about John Snyder, an insurance man and unfit mayor in the equation, but here are three things:

He got into office, in part, because the public did not like some of the Democrat-led redevelopment projects that spelled change. One that had particularly cost city redevelopment head Leader votes was the building of a Black Elks lodge in the 8th Ward to replace a Princess Street Elks building that had given way to the Park Lane urban renewal project. The large parking plaza to the north of York High was the hallmark of that project.

“The Democrats had little expectation of taking this district where anti-Negro sentiment was made known,” The Gazette and Daily said.

And the third was that Snyder was patently racist, governing as if the 20th century never existed, as one pundit said.

For example, he used a derogatory word for a Black person with a reporter in a discussing a matter relating to the largely Black garbage workers.

He was visited by two city leaders before 7 a.m. one day. He initially thought it was a Black person, using the derogatory term.

“The remark didn’t surprise us,” a Gazette and Daily editorial stated.

And then went on: “Mayor Johnny Snyder has been elected twice as a man who would keep the (derogatory term used by Snyder) in their place. Let’s face it, hard it may be.”

The mayor dug himself in deeper when asked for an apology from a union representative for the garbage workers. He denied using the term, then said he typically used two other racial slurs to describe Black people instead.

Here’s another example: The K-9 Corps of German shepherd police dogs started under his administration and their disproportionate use against Blacks was deeply resented in the Black community. In fact, he owned a German shepherd himself similar to those used by police.

Certainly, Black people could not appeal to the community’s sense of justice.

In a referendum on his first term, voters backed Snyder for four more years in the 1965 election against longtime Democratic City Councilman Al Hydeman Jr. by a 7,741-7,348 vote.

His reelection meant that he could continue to stonewall against reform ideas such as a police review board. When the state Human Relations Commission made recommendations to defuse racial tension after the 1968 summer unrest, Snyder largely ignored them.

In fact, his administration escalated things. Police expanded their K-9 corps, and a monument was constructed to honor the dogs.

York-area people played their cards in a second vote.

Comfort in the status quo

Clearly, York County did not have the things in place that would disrupt a status quo that accepted blighted housing, inequitable hiring practices, lack of affordable health care and limited public transportation.

It was a status quo hardened by the county’s perch on the Mason-Dixon Line, an invisible border that freely allowed Southern ideas to waft across.

Enlightened thinking from education was — and is — a go-to resource at a time like this. In those days, less than 45% of York County residents above 18 years in age had high school diplomas. Only 7% of York County’s population had college degrees.

York Junior College did not become a four-year school — York College – until 1968. In fact, the college moved from its downtown College and Duke streets site in 1959 to the former Out Door Country Club land, its current home. The country club had moved to its current site in the growing suburbs north of town.

Imagine the help that would have been provided by the college’s present-day Marketview Arts and Center for Community Engagement in those days.

Indeed, the city was suffering from a talent, population and tax drain to the suburbs. And increasing economic woes. York lost 8.2% of its population in the 1960s after sustaining a 9.1% loss the previous decade.

That suburban retail challenge — York Mall opened in 1968 — caused a panic that spawned parking lots as city’s growth industry to the detriment of landmark buildings that embodied York pride. Indeed, York College’s former building of Dempwolf design was one of those landmarks that came down in the early 1960s.

Black history not included

There were many signs that the city and county leadership just wanted to ignore growing frustration in the Black community.

Three publications came off the press in the mid-1960s: the York Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Greater York in Action,” a coffee table book; the county Elementary Principals’ Association’s “York County, An Overview”; and the York area’s 225th anniversary program.

All three publications told of Pennsylvania German, Presbyterian and English presence in York County in the 1700s. There was no mention of the sizable Black community, though more than 1,000 freed and enslaved people lived in the county in 1790.

“Greater York” could have designated space for William C. Goodridge in its “Men and Events” section, which, of course, also excluded contributions by women. But its editors chose not to.

“Greater York in Action” would not be complete,” the book states, “without mentioning some of the important early happenings and men of note who contributed so much to York’s place in the history of our country … .”

Goodridge also was not selected nor were he or any other events involving Black people listed in a “Greater York” historical timeline.

“York County, An Overview,” and the 225th anniversary program treated the Civil War with a friendly tone toward the Southern army that, as part of its campaign to maintain slavery, invaded the county, stole horses, trampled crops and terrorized the population.

“We know, in spite of the fears of townspeople, that the soldiers behaved like gentlemen and everyone in the town was safe,” “An Overview” said. “Most of the people felt sorry for them, they were so ragged and hungry.”

The 225th program called invading Confederate Gen. John B. Gordon “handsome.” That’s great respect afforded to the enemy and disregarded the fact that he was recovering from a disfiguring bullet wound to the left cheek.

The pageant notes glibly stated that there was sympathy for the Confederate cause in York: “It was a war that pits brother against brother.”

Rather, it was primarily a war in which the fate of millions of enslaved people hung in the balance.

One can only imagine what those in the Black community thought about these publications, the exclusion of their history and the soft and friendly treatment of the deadly Civil War.

Many Black families in York County had been enslaved and then struggled to survive in the Civil War’s aftermath. They had come to York to better themselves economically.

��Nothing would have changed’

With little else in the community to disrupt systems that spawned racial discrimination, the pot boiled over in the race riots in York in those two summers, a moment in which members of the Black community showed they weren’t going to take it anymore.

The York community had to hit rock bottom before it could rebound — and the riots served that purpose.

“If the riots hadn’t taken place,” Bobby Simpson of Crispus Attucks Community Center later said, “nothing would have changed.”

Several things happened between the 1969 riots and the summer of 1970.

Snyder died in York Hospital in the fall of 1969, and city voters backed Democrat Eli Eichelberger over Republican E. Nelson Read, a party switch that served as a referendum on the 1960s. York voters were tired of the Snyder-led decade.

Indeed, Snyder’s inept mayorship in the 1960s was replaced by capable mayors in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly John Krout, Elizabeth Marshall and William Althaus. The main complaint of those 1970s mayors that you hear about today is that they narrowed the first block of West Market Street.

The York Charrette in April 1970 — a moment of intense community problem solving led by a Black man from the South, Bill Riddick — produced reforms in health care, housing and public transportation.

Fifty years later, Black men and women hold or have served in the most powerful offices in York County.

At last, plans are being drawn up to attract investment in poverty-stricken neighborhoods, some of which have changed little since the riots era.

Much work is ahead.

Wages of Blacks and Latinos lag significantly behind whites. The poverty rate of Blacks and Latinos are 3.5 and 5.5 times more than the white population countywide. Both are unsolved equality issues raised in the 1960s.

In the post-riots era of reform, the York City Human Relations Commission and the York Spanish American Center were formed, both with the goal of improving community life for minorities.

So it’s a healthy and ironic sign of change in the community that both organizations occupied Snyder’s former insurance office and residence in the 200 block of East Princess Street in York.

The Spanish American Center succeeded the Human Relations Commission in that building in 2007, becoming the José E. Hernandez Centro Hispano. The block itself is named after a prominent Latino family, the Riveras.

The name of Renaissance Park across the street stands against Snyder’s lack of a real platform for change in 1961.

So the type of attention, regard and justice that Snyder withheld from minorities in the 1960s is now in play in his old neighborhood, even in the very house where he lived and sold insurance.

Memorial service

A prayer service is set for 5 p.m. Friday, July 21, to mark the 54th anniversary of the deaths of Lillie Belle Allen and Henry C. Schaad, both of whom were killed in the 1969 race riots in York.

The service is set at the site of the Allen/Schaad Memorial, 402 N. Newberry St., Farquhar Park.

if you want to hear how bad it is in florida:

democrats and republicans were on video dancing joyously to celebrate the end of the legislative session/season.

you know, the season where our government:

banned abortions starting at 6 weeks (prior to when someone knows they are pregnant), with supposed exceptions for incest/rape..m even though we have literally already seen cases where people have had to carry their effectively dead fetus to full term because the laws are vague and practicioners fear legal repercussions.

made it harder (than it already was) to sue insurance companies.

removed the requirement for training and certification in carrying a concealed firearm.

outlawed any and all gender affirming care for minors, in addition to removing insurance coverage for adults.

outlawed the use of pronouns that "do not correspond to the individual's sex assigned at birth" in public educational institutions (even with parental permission in cases of minors).

penalizes companies who consider environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues when making investment decisions. you know, caring about the environment and the lives of other people. how truly terrible (sarcastic).

created a special state guard that acts as a de facto law enforcement agency who responds to the governor. they can bear arms, make arrests, and can be mobilized for "threats to public safety” instead of only in states of emergency.

edit: hey! check it out! all y'all who called trans folk dramatic, these bills were just signed as an emergency law, meaning they are effective immediately in the state of florida:

making it illegal for a trans individual (or anybody who doesn't appear super masculine or feminine, truly) to use the "wrong bathroom". if you refuse to leave, you can be arrested and charged for it.

giving the state jurisdiction to remove children from "unsafe" environments when parents provide any gender affirmation.

making the public performance of "drag" and the usage of the wrong bathroom, especially in the presence of a minor, a serious sex crime. hm. totally not related to the last point or anything.

working to make it legal for any healthcare professional to deny care and service to anybody who does not fit their "moral and ethical" beliefs. which includes: women, bipoc, queer folk, non-christians, etc. oh! and they don't have to refer you to another care provider, either.

removing any diversity and equality presence from college campuses, meaning that even small things such as a queer club could lose the university funding from the state.

oh, and if that isn't enough, here's what seems to be on the fast track to passing within the next few months:

amending the death penalty laws to require only 8/12 jurors and to make it a recommended and/or automatic sentence for people charged with serious sex crimes.

bills that so broadly define healthcare that it would ban things like... breast cancer treatment, prostate cancer treatment, really anything that involves genitalia because "what if it involves a trans person"

rewriting textbooks in k-12 education to remove "critical race theory". you know, like mentioning the fact that rosa parks was a black woman protesting racial segregation when not moving from her seat in the bus. yes, these textbooks already exist. and yes, they put it as "because she was a woman didn't want to move".

oh! and not bills, but here are some sentiments shared in this "wonderful legislative session/season:

rep. randy fine openly called for the "eradication" of queer people on the government floor.

rep david borerro compared transitioning to suicide, stating that banning affirming care (and trans existence) would benefit everyone.

and there's even more! but yeah. no. this legislative session/season is something to celebrate. totally. 🙄

(oh, and this image is a joke. lest we forget the whistleblower's son who was swatted and arrested for posting a meme against the florida government. because how dare we express our distaste with the rampant fascism)
