Os Infinitos – John Banville

Para mim, uma história um pouco confusa, pois o narrador é variável – hora é um Deus – Hermes, hora é o homem que está morrendo – Adam, nome também do filho do moribundo. Os deuses – Zeus e Pan, assim como também Hermes, acabam “participando” da história na medida em que um se enamora pela mulher de Adam, fingindo-se de Adam, e outro acaba aparecendo como um amigo do moribundo, um matemático, criador de um conceito – o ovo de ouro de Brahma, “de cuja gema rompida surgiu toda a criação”.

I’m really enjoying Eclipse by John Banville at the moment. I couldn’t find a high-res image of the cover so here is a picture of Camberwell cemetery.

Banville writes so beautifully; every sentence is an elegiac little poem: ‘Listening shadows hung in the high room.’ Occasionally it gets a bit much (but maybe deliberately so?). I feel like characters in Banville novels can never just go for a pint, they always have to attend the cromulent bar, imbibing libation after libation of effervescent pilsner, the shadows of the past etching themselves into the darkened corners of the inner pub. Both are pretty cool to be fair.

This story is based on actual events and sounds so intriguing. ⁣ ⁣ 🎸 The Blue Guitar - John Banville ⁣ This is the story of Oliver Orme, a painter and a thief whose worst theft was the wife of his friend. When the affair is discovered, he hides away and tells the story of a year in his life.⁣ ⁣ 😴 Sleeping Beauties - Jo Spain⁣ This is the third book in the Inspector Tom Reynolds series and follows the grim discovery of young women’s bodies who all disappeared in recent years. I love Jo Spain’s writing so I’m looking forward to catching up with D.I. Reynolds again.⁣ ⁣ 😱 The Dark Room - Jonathan Moore⁣ I had never heard of this book or author before I received it in a book subscription box. It follows Inspector Gavin Cain who is about to exhume a coffin and knows there is something terrible inside. ⁣ ⁣ 😬 Outsider - Stephen King⁣ I’m so excited to be reading something by King again. I’m doing this a bit backwards as I have already watched the TV series 🙊 but I’m looking forward to something eerily supernatural and a good mystery.⁣ ⁣ This latest TBR is quite crime/mystery heavy but it’s books I’m really in the mood for at the moment. Quite a good distraction from regular life! I’d love to know your opinions on any of these books or authors. anyone who describes breasts as ‘those big twin bulbs of milky flesh’ can get in the bin. a classic case of male author tries to write a female character and gets it spectacularly wrong. i’m sick of male authors writing about women as if they are mythical spectres instead of boring human flesh. if you couldn’t tell, this is one of my least favourite books of all time. the saving grace is the setting of ireland (which also has a ‘milky’ sky, the man loves milk!) but the characters are odious. someone on my MA program described this novel as ‘The Sea or I Hate That My Daughter Dated A Black Person’ which says it all. how on earth did this win a booker? 1/5 ⭐️ #book #books #bookstagram #ukbookstagram #bookerprize #johnbanville #banville #thesea #literature #ireland https://www.instagram.com/p/CLeFiJPFZx_/?igshid=3zakoz8vy974
