i think if we learned one thing from todays hermitcraft stream is that they absolutely cannot watch a movie together. Doc wants everyone to surpress their laughter at funny scenes, Ren will go rabid when you ask him anything or take his popcorn, then everyone will be mad at Joe for choosing a movie he described as extremely funny when it is actually very tragic all the while Cleo laughs only at inappropriate moments
I saw The Menu for this first time on Thursday night and cackled nearly non-stop.
The beautiful food and landscapes, clownishly archetypal characters, and potential mortal peril captured my attention initially—but what truly sets The Menu apart from lesser films is an unwavering commitment to the bit.
In terms of the plot, I don’t want to spoil too much, but I will say that Ralph Fiennes’ Chef Slowik is completely dedicated to executing his plan for a perfect dinner suited precisely for his dozen guests—which is unsettled when one of his invitees brings a different date, Margot Mills (played by Anna Taylor-Joy), due to a recent break-up. The chef is so committed to his personalized menu concept that he is disturbed enough by Margot’s appearance to question her wildly inappropriately before he can allow dinner to proceed.
The Chef’s commitment to the bit (at the expense of all social expectations and norms) resonates through every frame of the film, supported by commitment to the bit in terms of its direction, cinematography, and cast choices. No choice in creating this film was made without intention and care.
If you enjoy commitment to the bit taken to its logical and horrifying extremes, I strongly recommend The Menu.
Absolutely engrossed by the most mundane, minor subplot of season ten—the wholesale stone deal between Joe Hills and Etho
Etho choosing to get himself into a comical amount of debt to Joe Hills, repeatedly. Because he’s the one who controls how many shulkers he gives for Joe to fill with stone—every empty box dropped off is a 2-diamond debt he’s signing up for
The existence of that debt leading Joe to adjust his build plans somewhat significantly—the roads of his massive community area build are now being outlined in froglights. Because Etho sells froglights. And Etho owed him hundreds of diamonds—so Joe can pay for the absurd amount of froglights he requires by cancelling Etho’s debt and leaving “you owed me” tokens in the payment box.
Joe could just build a froglight farm—but it’s funnier to get it from Etho. And Etho can get froglights a lot easier than he can get diamonds so I imagine he’s happy as well. They could just renegotiate the deal to a straight trade instead of the somewhat convoluted current arrangement—but I bet they won’t. Because it’s goofy, and fun, and most importantly it’s a Bit
I’m pretty sure this is the first real bit the two of them have had together
And I am. Enraptured. I’m cheering as other hermits start to patronize Etho’s stone shop. I’m trying to catch every Joe stream I can for debt updates. At some point over the course of this saga I was forced to admit that I am an actual Joe Hills fan, he’s one of my favs now, heaven help me lol
(And! It’s just really cool that this massive community area of Joe’s is being shaped by the resource needs of the other hermits! It’s like, thematic!)
Docm77 apparently has eternal Metallica beef because once when he had a VIP pass he told James Hatfield how cool he is and James Hatfield replies "Who gives a fuck?"
Doc was telling this story live during Joe and Ren's stream, forgetting he shouldn't curse, and Joe branded this "Hermitcraft After Doc"
The hermitblogging posts are going to be frequent today I can tell.
Joe still introduces themself as Joe Hills from Nashville, Tennessee, even though he hasn't lived there in a long time. This obviously gives Skizz pauses when they first meet.
Queen Cleo leads an empire of the undead. Zombies like herself, skeletons, ghouls, you name it! They have a neighbor in Joe, a half-ghost, one of the rarest species in the kingdoms (besides humans, of course). He is known not as a king or prince or lord, but as He Who Hath Conquered Death.
