Not something you’d think about usually but I REALLY love interactions between Jimmy and Cleo this season. The absolute comedy. The dynamic is RIGHT THERE.

You know what? Just because you’d be able to talk my ears off with LuckyBoy!AU, I’m gonna keep asking you about it with long asks so I can get long answers (I love reading long answers since they give out so much info and speculation, while leaving room for discussion as well). So let's have a chat through asks so neither of us have anxiety(?) while talking to each other in messages.
Who would be some of the regulars when Ben is working at the cooffe shop? (I also love this au XD) Would Cooper, Rook, Gwen, Max and/or anyone else go at the same time as a group and have a casual conversation with the barista? Would Ben accidently gain confidential information about the Plumbers this way? I wonder if he would be famous between the aliens and humans near Undertown as one of the few humans that's actually chill with every alien regardless of appearances thanks to knowing Gwen with the Omnitrix from before?
I feel like Ben purposefully avoiding Cooper as his vigilante persona would start as a measure to avoid his identity being exposed (I belive it was Cooper who exposed him in UAF, right?), but later would develop into a troll play, waiting for him to finally find him and play a prank there.
Would Ben play pranks on Will Harangue for giving him bad publicity to the humans? I mean, it's not like he can just appear in front of a camera and tell his side of the story, he would be captured instantly, or interrupted at the very least; and he having his own social media wouldn't work too well since he isn't a tech genius and the Plumbers could track him down.
Also, what has Gwen done that they think they need Ben to protect them from her? Like yeah, in OV there's a lot of property damage, but they don't believe they need protection from him (at least I don't think so), so she must've done something big in order for that to happen.
And now an ask that isn't directly related to Ben XD Who would be some of the people leading an investigation against the vigilante, trying to discover his identity as well as species? Like I imagine Rook would be more of an addon to said investigation, being on the lookout but not actively investigating everything that Ben has been involved with, and Gwen has a lot on her plate, so let's not let her join said investigation.
Oh oh oh, I just thought about it, if Ben could be considered an Anodite in this AU, what happened when Verdona appeared in that one episode of AF? Did she manage to find Ben in the first place and almost but not quite take him away? Does the rest of the family know he's an Anodite and what are their thoughts about it? If they don't then how would Ben explain some of the magic things that he does and someone witness?
Ohohoh, buttering me up are ya? Well you're in for a brain dump.
Ok, first I gotta say: The alien cafe is separate to the plumbers (the plumbers have their on cafeteria, but like to indulge in other food sometimes, and non-instant coffee.)
So I was thinking, one of Ben's regular coworkers is Alan Albright. Reason for this is because Alan is not allowed to go on missions often. He's too young. I mean I know they definitely have child soldiers in OS- buuuut Max's influence has put a stop to that. He's seen how it affected Gwen. So, Alan is put on easy patrols in low crime area, in the city.
Alan, however wants in on the action, so Max had suggested the cafe. Ben and Alan have a very brotherly bond, and Ben (outside of his vigilante life) has been swaying Alan's opinion on both, the plumbers and his alter ego.
Manny, Alan, Helen and Cooper- When not busying himself with the tech lounge- (sorry, Pierce is still dead in this), will often come by the cafe, they sit in a booth and discuss things. Most occasions Ben is invited to sit with them.
When Gwen pops by their interactions are brief, Ben would try to tease her about anything and everything under the sun. "See Kevin lately?" "Oh, got beat by the walking glow stick again, huh?" "Geez, another jail break? 3rd time this week!"
Normally he gets a fiery reaction and a nasty retort.
Of course Ben would take every opportunity he can to get info. At first it wasn't intentional, he'd just eaves drop on a few conversations that interested him. As time goes by though, he's found that a lot of people, plumber, criminal and just outer space travelers, are more than happy to unload some gossip. Ben is very much delighted by that.
He's not exactly famous, he's well known for being a friendly person, yes. But not all throughout Undertown.
ain't cooper the blond dude with some kinda telekenetic power that ended up turning into an almost Kevin duplicate? (i'll fix that) NGL I forgot he grew up in UAF.
Pretty sure the one that exposed Ben was the nerd who was voiced by the VA of Robin (TeenTitans/Go). Now that you bring it up though, that guy... Jimmy, is someone to be avoided, cause he's a snoopy guy. Who also hangs out at the cafe a lot to get details. Always ends up harassing Ben cause he knows Ben has all the juicy gossip.
And yeah Ben would totally take advantage of it to mess with the poor kid.
Definitely. Ben would mess with Will Harangue as much as possible. Especially when he goes live. Ben won't confront him personally, or do anything that could possibly reveal his indentity. He's got a lot of unique mannerisms that his family could quickly pick up on, there's also his voice, although muffled by the mask, if it's recorded enough- it's another identifier.
So that leaves Ben with his sticker trail. They're very bright, almost blinding, so Ben's stickers are an annoying inconvenience. He could also use a weak spell that causes it's victims to yawn/sneeze. Maybe he'll hang in the background briefly and wave. Just some of things he does to get under Harangue's skin basically.
Gwen:
So, you picked up on what I've hinted at. Good.
Before I go into Gwen, I'll say this: The plumbers are stationed on Earth to protect humanity. That means the aliens who have immigrated are less of a priority. That doesn't mean that they're completely unsafe, the plumbers still patrol Undertown and look after the people- just less so.
Aliens that leave Undertown especially- Normally they're ushered back by a few Plumbers standing guard- those that pose a threat or seem to pose a threat are dealt with by the plumbers. Which isn't too bad, just a slap on the back, a fine, maybe jail time.
Unless you run into Gwen. Who is much more intimidating, much more brutish, she won't exactly hold back. So- she hasn't got the best rep with Undertown. She's still a hero. Known throughout the universe. Just not a kind one.
On several occassions, Ben(vigilante) has had to step in to get her to back down from dealing with criminals.
The plumbers don't have a lot to go on with the investigating. Ben doesn't leave any DNA trails, cause anodites have no DNA. No hair strands, no finger prints, no blood. Even his stickers. They got nothing, nada.
That doesn't mean it's completely hopeless. A clean hit to Ben has on more than one occasion shocked him out of his anodite form, reverting him back to human (which is why he has the glasses and face mask, as a just incase scenario.) Sometimes even spooking/shocking him can make him human again. If his focus is messed with he's human, kinda deal.
So the plumbers are aware of this. They do their best to be as violent and destructive when they see Ben. They're attempts usually fail unless they have someone competent enough with them, Ie; Gwen, Rook.
Villains are also aware of this. So risky buiz am I right?
In regards to Verdona; honestly, I feel like having her know about Ben's existence as an anodite would kinda nerf this whole thing completely. Verdona, I bet, would be a massive gossip. Although her contact with Max is limited, he'd hear about it eventually. Game over. There's also Sunny, who would take advantage of this information and spread it across the universe.
So instead maybe Verdona pays a visit later rather than now.
She'd also be less inclined to take Ben back home, I like how Verdona is indifferent to Ben but loves Gwen, I wanna keep that aspect.
To explain any magic happenings that his family or friends have spotted, he just says he's practicing to be an illusionist. Or he broke a glow stick, or his has glitter in his pocket. (He always has something retaining to magenta hidden up his sleeve.)
Hopefully that got all your questions answered for now!

My Eyes - Part 7
Pairing: Bucky; Steve x Fem/Reader
Word Count: 4,937
Story Description: Steve is a good man, America’s golden boy, a hero. He’s Captain America for christ’s sake! So it’s normal to want what he has… right? Bucky knows he doesn’t deserve her. He doesn’t even deserve the second chance at life he’s been given. But Bucky can never let him know. Steve can never find out that his friend is in love with his best girl.
Story takes place post “CA: CW” and all tension has been resolved.
Previously On…
Tumblr media
“Bucky…” Y/N tries to stop him, holding Jimmy in her arms.
“I said stay inside, Y/N.” He used his military tone.
The moment he walked outside the house, Tony’s faceplate lifted up.
“Were you really ignorant enough to think I don’t have tracking devices in every vehicle at the compound?” Tony asked mockingly.
“What are you doing here, Stark?”
He ignored the question. “I know she’s in there. But there’s someone else too. My heat sensors tallied three people.”
“She doesn’t want to see you.” Bucky tried to push.
Tony’s playful tone disappeared and he glared now. “You’re not the only person that cares about her, Barnes. She was our family before you even got to the compound. You think you were the only one looking for her?”
This caught Bucky off guard. He opened his mouth to argue, but he didn’t have any response. He always assumed they’d given up. But he should’ve known Tony would be searching for Y/N when he was in his lab at ungodly hours. He was probably monitoring every security camera in the country, trying to catch a facial recognition.
Suddenly the door opened with Y/N holding Jimmy. Tony’s eyes widened when he caught a glimpse of the child. He looked at Bucky as if he were waiting for him to argue against what he was putting together. But Bucky just looked down at the ground and had his hands on his hips.
Jimmy looked scared of Tony as he was suited up in his intimidating Ironmen getup. Usually kids were lining up to ask for autographs or begging to try on the suit. But the little boy looked apprehensive and frightened by the bright armor.
Tony opened up the armor and took a step down on the soft grass. He innocently held up his hands as he slowly made his way to Y/N.
Bucky stayed in place, watching carefully. The entire team would know about Y/N and Jimmy now. Tony Stark never kept a secret in his life… And it was all Bucky’s fault. He should’ve thought to check for trackers in the car.
“What’s your name, handsome?” Tony asked with his famous smirk.
Jimmy hid his face in his mom’s neck.
“This is Jimmy. He’s just a little shy sometimes.” Y/N admitted. But then her gaze flickered over to Bucky quickly.
Apparently Bucky was the exception to that, seeing as Jimmy hadn’t been even slightly scared of the man… metal arm and all. Bucky couldn’t deny that it gave him a twisted pride knowing that he won the kid over.
“Well, hi there Jimmy.” Tony smirked. “That name wouldn’t be short for something now, would it?”
Y/N had seen Tony interact with kids on many occasions. If there were people he managed to charm more than pretty women, it was the youth of today.
Y/N rubbed Jimmy’s back in comfort. “It’s okay, baby. Tony is a friend of mommy’s. You don’t have to be scared.”
Jimmy slowly uncovered his face and looked at Tony curiously. “James Wilson Y/L/N.”
Tony shared a look with Y/N. “Well that’s quite a name, kid. I’m Tony Stark. Some people call me Ironman.” He held out his hand and Jimmy reluctantly shook it.
Jimmy’s face scrunched. “Who’s Ironman?”
Tony chuckled at that and caught on that Y/N had managed to keep the world of superheroes a secret to the child.
“Jimmy, why don’t you show Uncle Bucky around while I talk to Tony?” Y/N suggested. Jimmy nodded and climbed down from his mother’s arms. Tony and Y/N watched as she ran over to Bucky, grabbed his metal hand, and started leading him further out onto the property. Bucky glanced over his shoulder at Y/N and she gave him a reassuring look.
---
“You didn’t have to run and hide, Y/N. We could’ve helped.” Tony reprimanded as they sat at the dinner table with coffee.
“I know you could’ve. But I didn’t want it. I needed to do this on my own.” Y/N replied calmly.
“Is he healthy?” Tony couldn’t help but wonder if Jimmy inherited Steve’s genes pre or post serum.
Y/N nodded. “He’s a healthy as can be… just uncommonly small.” She took in a shaky breath. “Maybe Steve’s serum didn’t affect him. At least, I hope so.” Then she laughed at herself. But it was obvious this was a stressful topic as her hand ran through her hair. “Not gonna lie, the thought keeps me up a lot of nights.”
Tony eyed her sympathetically. His hand reached over to pat her on the shoulder. “We can take him to see Bruce or Dr. Cho. They can run some tests.”
“No!” Y/N answered too quickly. “I don’t want him to go through that. I just want him to be a kid. I…I just want him to have a chance at normal.”
Tony nodded. “It was just an idea.”
A silence settled in the room.
Tony cleared his throat. “Barnes has been worried sick. That man never stopped looking for you.”
Y/N’s face looked baffled. “Steve probably made him promise to look after me…I just know it. It’s not a secret that Bucky and I never got along.”
“Give him more credit than that.” Tony had seen a new side of Bucky after Steve’s death. If he hadn’t seen him interact with Y/N before that, he would’ve thought that Bucky and Y/N had been best friends.
Y/N disregarded his comment. “How is everyone?”
“As good as they can be. They miss you too. When they find out about that kid, they’ll want to come see you.”
“Tony, no!” Y/N ordered. “This is exactly what I was trying to prevent!”
“We were you family, Y/N!” Tony’s voice rose.
“No, you were Steve’s family! I was only a part of your lives because of him!”
“We lost Steve and then we lost you!” Then Tony calmed himself down. “We all love you and it never had anything to do with your and Steve’s relationship. Argue all you want, but you’re wrong.”
Y/N refused to meet his eyes, staring down at the mug instead. Her jaw was clenched in frustration.
“Tony… I think you should go.” She couldn’t find the courage to even raise her eyes as she demanded it.
“Fine.” Tony snapped.
---
Bucky couldn’t help but smile as Jimmy continued to drag him by his metal arm, not even a hesitation of fear.
“Where are we going?” He asked gently.
“To see the flowers!” Jimmy stated excitedly.
Now that it was daytime, Bucky realized he had missed a lot of the area surrounding the house. There was a green house/conservatory, a small farm out back, and even a decently sized garden.
Jimmy was dragging him towards the greenhouse.
When he opened the door, a wave of warmth washed over them. He was also met with dozens of different scents, fighting for his nose’s attention. There were flowers everywhere. It was even cozier than the house. There were candles scattered about and rustic, wooden furniture placed around the space. A small bookcase sat in the corner, filled with books on gardening and natural remedies. It looked like the workspace of a little white witch.
“These are my favorite!” Jimmy finally let go of Bucky’s hand and ran over to a vase filled with a bouquet of purple flowers. “They smell like mommy.”
Bucky smiled sadly as he recognized the lavender. “When I knew your mom, long before you were born… she used to bring my friends flowers almost every day.”
“Were these your favorite too?” Jimmy asked. It never occurred to him that his mom existed before he was born.
“Close.” Bucky looked around. “But sunflowers were always my favorite.” He pointed to a bundle that were sitting on a different table.
“Those are my mom’s favorite too!”
Bucky laughed at Jimmy’s excitement.
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of jets lifting off. Bucky looked at the window to see that Tony was back in his Ironman suit and shooting into the air.
“Was that my dad?” Jimmy asked quietly.
Bucky sighed and kneeled down in front of Jimmy. His head shook, answering the question. He knew it wasn’t his place to tell him everything. But this guessing game had to be torturous for the kid.
Jimmy seemed to sense his struggle. “Every time I ask mommy about him, she gets real sad. She always says she’ll tell me when I’m bigger.”
This broke Bucky’s heart. He knew Y/N was doing what she thought was best. But seeing Jimmy saddened by it put a hex over him. He wanted to give this child everything he ever asked for. Maybe it was those eyes that reminded him so much of Steve.
“I’ll tell you a big secret.” Jimmy nodded. “I was best friends with your dad. That’s how I met your mom actually.”
Jimmy was much smarter than the average 3-year-old and caught that Bucky was sad thinking about this person, just like his mom. As if the melancholy was contagious, Jimmy’s blue eyes gazed at the ground and his lips lowered into a frown.
“Something bad happened to him, didn’t it?” He asked softly. Bucky was quiet for a moment. “That’s why mommy gets sad a lot.”
“He died when your mom was pregnant with you.” Bucky explained. Then he put his finger underneath Jimmy’s chin, lifting it up. “Your mom and dad loved each more than anyone I know. If he could, he would be here, Jimmy.”
The little boy just nodded.
Someone was clearing their throat from the entrance of the greenhouse. Bucky quickly turned his head as he looked over. Y/N was leaning against the door, arms crossed, with a disapproving look.
Bucky turned his attention back to Jimmy. “I gotta go talk to your mom, okay?” He patted the boy’s shoulder lightly before standing up.
The two adults walked out of the greenhouse, Y/N closing the door behind her.
“Stark’s gone.” Y/N stated coolly.
Bucky scoffed. “Yes, I can see that.”
Y/N couldn’t find the nerve to say what she wanted: Bucky needed to leave and never come back.
“This is really what you want? To keep me away from him…to keep me away from you?” Bucky muttered.
“He’s all I have.” Y/N defended harshly.
“That’s not true. That’s never been true.”
“You’ve already caused enough problems, Bucky. Please just go. All of you are only going to make things worse.”
“Y/N…” Bucky begged as he stepped closer to her.
“Bucky just go!” Y/N snapped, taking a step back.
“Fine.” He held up his hands, giving up. Then he marched to his car. Y/N hesitantly followed, making sure he would actually go. Bucky reached into the glove compartment and came walking back to Y/N. “This is a burner phone… it’s untraceable. It has all of our numbers in it. There’s even a direct line to FRIDAY. If you ever need anything, anything at all, use it. Please.”
Y/N stared at the phone, but didn’t move.
“Y/n!” Bucky demanded in frustration. “Take the phone!”
She slowly grabbed it.
Bucky studied her for a moment. He wanted to hug her, to touch her, to tell her everything would be okay. But he knew it wasn’t right.
For the first time since he got here, he was able to take her in. Y/N was still so beautiful. Besides the slightly different hair and the exhaustion in her eyes, she looked the same. He tried to memorize it as best he could. Last time he didn’t know he’d never see her again. This time he did.
“Bye, Y/N.” Bucky finally muttered and turned to his car.
“Uncle Bucky! Uncle Bucky, wait!” Jimmy yelled in the distance.
Y/N swore under her breath. This was exactly what she had wanted to avoid.
Jimmy sprinted for Bucky as fast as his little legs would carry. In his hands were a bundle of sunflowers. Bucky kneeled to his level when he reached him.
The little boy was breathing heavily from his running. “You…you said they were your favorite.” He handed them to Bucky gently.
Y/N’s brow furrowed at the statement. She’d never known that.
“Thanks, buddy.” Bucky answered genuinely. Once again, Jimmy reminded him more of Y/N than Steve.
“You’re coming back, right?” Jimmy’s voice was desperate.
“I…” Bucky couldn’t lie to the little boy. He looked at Y/N for help, which was unfair to everyone.
“Please come back.” Jimmy begged in a whisper.
To Bucky’s surprise, Jimmy wrapped his little arms around Bucky’s neck and hugged him. Bucky couldn’t help but return the affection. “I’m with you ‘til the end of the line, pal.” He whispered into the boy’s ear quiet enough for Y/N not to overhear. Despite the complex phrase that held a meaning beyond Jimmy’s understanding, Bucky’s words seemed to reassure and calm him.
Bucky allowed himself a glance up at Y/N. She looked heartbroken.
“I gotta go, Jimmy.” Bucky finally whispered and gently pulled away. “Go back to your mom.” The boy nodded and did as he said.
Bucky got in the car and shared a look with Y/N through the window. She picked Jimmy up and started carrying him back to the house. Over her shoulder, Jimmy gave him a sad wave. Bucky returned it before turning the engine on and driving away.

                                                   2 YEARS LATER
Bucky grunted and hunched over as he piloted the jet off the ground.
“You okay, Sergeant Barnes?” Agent Hill said over the comms.
“Yep. Yep… just took little hit.” Bucky grumbled.
“Barnes, can you stop the bleeding?” Hill’s tone was icy, but her concern was still there.
“I’ll live.”
“That’s not what I asked.” Hill retorted. “Listen, you need medical attention. I’m looking up the nearest hospital.”
“It’s not that bad, Hill.”
“Maybe if you weren’t alone. But someone has to stop that bleeding.”
A virtual map appeared in front of him. He realized that he would be flying right over Y/N’s house in Montana. He would reach it before any hospital.
“You sure you wanna do that, Barnes?” Hill read his mind as she saw the same map that was in front of him.
“I just need a secure location to clean this and rest.” Barnes added as he changed the jets direction slightly.
“Alright, go to stealth mode and contact me tomorrow.” Hill ordered. Of all the people that noticed Bucky constantly taking on dangerous, solo missions, Hill handled it the best. She didn’t baby him. As long as he didn’t do anything stupid and followed orders, she wasn’t going to interfere with his personal life.
“Roger that.” With that, Bucky turned off his comms and switch the jet to stealth mode.
Of course I had to be raining when he landed the jet in the forest clearing. When he stood up, he blinked rapidly. He must of lost a lot of blood because he was now feeling dangerously lightheaded. Bucky slammed his fist on the button that lowered the jet’s platform. He grabbed his duffel filled with weapons and first aid.
When he stepped off the platform, he saw someone running to him with a flashlight in hand. But then there was a ringing in his ears and he lost his footing.
Bucky fell to his knees and clutched his wound.
“Bucky?” He could recognize Y/N’s voice anywhere. “Jesus Christ, you’re bleeding!” She must have spotted his wound. His inability to respond only panicked her further. “Bucky! I can’t carry you back to the house, you gotta help me out here.”
Next thing he knew, his arm was being wrapped over her shoulder and she was pulling him to his feet. Bucky managed to do what she asked and stumbled his way back to the house. It looked like heaven through his blurred vision.
“Mommy, is he okay?” Jimmy asked, frightened.
“Honey, I need to go wait in your room, okay? Don’t come out until I say so.” Y/N ordered him. He didn’t need to see Bucky bloodied and beaten up.
Y/N set him on the couch carefully. Then she was unbuckling his leather and kevlar fest. She managed to rip it off without needing to cut the thing to pieces. Bucky hissed when the fabric was ripped off his wound.
“I know. I’m sorry, Buck.” Y/N calmed him.
“I already got the bullet out.” Bucky managed to sigh. “I was under fire, I didn’t have time do stop the bleeding.”
Y/N had walked away for a moment and returned with a medical box. She cleaned the wound and prepped a needle for stiches. Without giving him any warning, she started hemming the skin back together. Y/N was as gentle as one can be when continually probing skin. But she made quick work of it and then covered the wound with clean bandages.
She disappeared again, only to return with a huge glass of water and two pills in her hand. “They’re painkillers and they’ll help you sleep. Drink all the water. You’re super dehydrated and losing a bunch of blood doesn’t help.”
Bucky silently did what he was told and watched her as she sat on the loveseat across from him. “When did you learn how to stitch an injury like that?” He smirked mischievously.
They finally had to acknowledge the unsuitable circumstances that had brought them together again.
“You think that’s the first time I had to tend to a super soldier’s wounds?” Y/N cocked an eyebrow at him. “I couldn’t even tell you how many times Steve showed up at my doorstep, still bleeding and covered in bruises. I always yelled at him, questioning why he didn’t go to the medical wing.”
Bucky gave a sad smile. “Because he was too eager to get back to you. Even said so himself.”
Y/N’s lip trembled for a moment, but she managed to contain the emotion.
“I’m sorry to show up like this…I know you didn’t expect to ever see me-“
“It’s fine, Bucky.” Y/N interrupted. “I’m just glad you’re okay.”
“How are you, Y/N?” Bucky asked gently.
She shrugged at the question. “As good as can be. Jimmy will start preschool after this summer.”
“Can I see him?” Bucky asked softly.
“Might as well go get the trouble maker. Otherwise he’ll be sneaking out here in the middle of night. And you need your rest.” She left the living room.
Bucky grinned when he heard the pattering of little feet. Jimmy came around the couch and his little blue eyes stared at Bucky’s naked chest, stopping at the bandaged wound.
“Are you okay, Uncle Bucky?” He whispered with fear in his eyes.
“Yeah, I’m fine, buddy.”
Jimmy stepped forward and grabbed Bucky’s metal thumb like it was reassuring him that he really was okay. “What happened?” He whispered, moving even closer to Bucky.
Y/N leaned against the doorway, listening to the two boys talks.
“I got into a fight with bad people.” Bucky answered without having to lie.
“But you’re okay now?” Jimmy asked carefully.
Bucky chuckled. “Yeah, I’m okay now. All thanks to your mom.”
Jimmy looked over at his mom. “Mommy, can I sleep out here with Uncle Bucky?”
“No, Jimmy. Bucky needs his rest. You can hang out with him tomorrow, okay?”
Jimmy accepted the answer, but looked disappointed. He brought his blue eyes back down to Bucky. “Promise you’ll be here in the morning?”
Bucky nodded. “I promise. Now listen to your mom.” To his surprise, Jimmy jumped forward to give him a hug. He was very careful to avoid his injuries.
“Goodnight, Uncle Bucky.” Jimmy sang before running upstairs.
Bucky’s body relaxed as he heard Jimmy being ordered to brush his teeth and him talking to his mom about anything that came to his mind.
Before he could go to sleep, Bucky sat up and reached forward to try and untie his combat boots. He winced in pain at the movement.
“Don’t you dare tear open those stitches, James Buchanan Barnes.” Y/N had snuck up on him. Without giving any more warning, she leaned forward to untie his boots for him and slide them off his feet.
“Thanks.” Bucky blushed.
Y/N went to a cabinet and pulled out pillows and blankets. “I still have some of Steve’s clothes in a box somewhere…If you-”
“Im fine, Y/N.” Bucky assured her. He couldn’t bring himself to wear them. But he also didn’t think Y/N needed to see another man wearing Steve’s clothes. “I have an extra shirt in my duffel… I don’t have the energy to put it on right now.”
Y/N nodded, looking somewhat relieved. “Goodnight, Bucky.”
“Night, Y/N.”
---
Bucky woke up feeling better than expected. The serum most likely had already pushed his healing along even further.
He heard music coming from the kitchen and managed to get up from his sleeping position with minimum amount of pain. He grabbed the extra t-shirt from his bag and lazily tugged it over his head.
Bucky walked into the kitchen to find Y/N making an egg scrambler. Jimmy was sitting at the table, eating cereal and scribbling in a coloring book.
“Good morning.” Bucky greeted softly.
“Morning.” Jimmy smiled shyly. “Mommy said not to wake you.”
“How are you feeling?” Y/N asked seriously.
“Much better, thanks.”
“When you get back, make sure you have someone still look at that. I may have a few tricks up my sleeve, but I’m no doctor or nurse.”
Bucky nodded. Then he turned his attention to Jimmy. “Your mom was telling me you’re starting preschool soon.”
Jimmy stopped coloring for a second and glared at his mom. He nodded, but continued coloring as if he didn’t want to continue discussing the subject.
Bucky gave Y/N a look and she mouthed that she’d tell him later.
---
Tumblr media
Bucky looked at all the photos Y/N had on the fireplace mantle. There was a couple for every year of Jimmy’s life. And there was even some of him with Y/N’s family. But Bucky’s heart felt heavy when he couldn’t find a single photo of Steve.
“It has more to do with me than Jimmy.” Y/N commented, noticing him observing the photos.
Jimmy was outside playing fetch with Porthos. There wasn’t a better babysitter than that dog.
“Being pregnant with Jimmy and starting a new life here… I realize now that I never really gave myself the proper time to grieve. But I guess I did that on purpose too. It’s still hard for me to talk about him. I can’t even look at a picture of him without tearing up.” Y/N admitted.
“Bucky, I’m sorry for how I treated you last time. Seeing you here, talking to Jimmy… It made me panic. But after you left, the more and more I thought it through… I realized I would be taking away Steve’s foundation from Jimmy. All of you knew him differently than I did. Jimmy shouldn’t just know about his father through me, but through everyone that ever loved him.”
“You were just trying to protect him.” Bucky supported. “Have you told him everything yet?”
“He’s old enough to know about the Avengers and other superheroes. I’ve told him about Steve and how he passed. But he hasn’t put the two together and I’m not really sure how to explain it.”
“What was with the whole preschool thing?” Bucky asked.
Y/N sighed, rubbing her face. “Jimmy is very shy. He gets anxious around a lot of people. Every time I bring up preschool… he practically throws a fit, says he doesn’t want to go. He’s always been painfully shy and I’ve tried to slowly get him to socialize, but it’s still hard for him.”
“Probably doesn’t help that he’s smarter than everyone else his age.” Bucky added with a shy smirk.
Y/N chuckled. “I got a phone call from my financial advisor after your last visit. Apparently Jimmy has been rewarded a full-ride scholarship to any college of his choosing… compliments of Stark Industries. Someone, who I can only assume was Happy, claimed that they saw great potential in the 3-year-old.”
Bucky couldn’t help but laugh at that. “Yeah. Well… you know Stark. If he can’t fix a problem like he fixes tech, he throws money at it.”
“I wanted to tell you something else…” Y/N said. “You can visit, whenever you want. Same with the others. As long as Jimmy-”
“Stays safe.” Bucky finished for her.
“And you don’t have to wait to get shot to stop by.” Y/N added with a playful glare. “In fact, I’d prefer if you didn’t get shot at all.”
“What’s that look for?” Bucky asked innocently.
“Nat tells me everything… including your new streak of being a total kamikaze. What the hell are you thinking, taking on the world by yourself?”
“You talk to Romanoff?” Bucky’s brow furrowed.
Y/N shrugged. “At least once a week. Don’t change the subject.”
“I don’t know what she’s referring to…” Bucky lied.
“Don’t give me that bullshit, James.” Y/N pointed. “You think I’m the only person from Steve’s life that needs looking after? We both may have handled his death in unhealthy ways, but at least my end goal was to stay alive!”
Bucky just grinned at her, completely ignoring the point of her lecture.
“Why are you smiling at me like that? Are you even listening to what I’m saying?”
Bucky held up his hands. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry. It’s just… you only call me James when you’re mad at me about something.”
Y/N shook her head in frustration. “If you plan on sticking around, that child is going to fall in love with you.” Bucky’s smile disappeared. “He basically already has.” Y/N sighed. “He never knew Steve, so he doesn’t know what it’s like to lose someone. But you are his family now. So you better cut the bullshit and start taking care of yourself, okay?”
He cleared his throat. “Yes ma’am.”
She groaned. “Ugh. Don’t call me ma’am. It makes me feel like a grandma.” She started heading for the door, ready to rejoin her son now that the serious discussion was over.
“Hey, Y/N?” Bucky asked gently. She turned around. “Thank you.” She nodded, clearly taken aback by his candidness.
Bucky followed her outside just a few steps behind. He smiled when he found Jimmy being chased by Porthos and giggling endlessly.
“Mommy, save me!” Jimmy cried out through his laughter.
Y/N went running over, scooped him up in her arms, and started attacking him with kisses.
For the first time since Steve’s death, Bucky felt a warmth return to his heart. Seeing his best friend’s son so happy and giggling. Then looking at Y/N, still the most beautiful woman Bucky ever laid eyes on.
After a little while, Y/N left Bucky to entertain Jimmy and Porthos. She said she had to get started on dinner. But she came back out a few minutes later. She opened her mouth to say something, but stopped at the sight in front of her.
On top of the wild grass, Jimmy was sitting in Bucky’s lap. Porthos was sleeping peacefully beside them. Jimmy’s little fingers were attempting to tie together some dandelions and other weeds to make a flower crown. Bucky patiently watched, only helping when Jimmy became frustrated.
“Hey, Bucky?” Y/N finally found the ability disturb the moment.
He looked up at her.
“I really don’t have much to make dinner. I have to go into town and get some groceries. Are you okay with watching him?”
“Course.” Bucky smiled.
“It’s finished!” Jimmy cheered in his lap, ignoring his mother’s departure. He held up the crown for Bucky to see. Then he was reaching up to put it on Bucky’s head.
“It’s for me? I thought it was your flower crown…” Bucky noted.
“No, silly!” Jimmy giggled. “I made it for you.”
His short attention span took over and Jimmy started talking Bucky’s ear off about dinosaurs. There was no direction to what he was saying. He just rambled off facts and even ran around Bucky, doing impressions of his favorite types. Then he started talking about a movie that Bucky was unfamiliar with.
Jimmy must have recognized that Bucky didn’t really know what he was talking about. “You’ve seen Jurassic Park, right?”
Bucky shook his head.
“What?” Jimmy shrieked. “We have to watch it right now!”
Next think he knew, Bucky was being dragged back into the house. Porthos seemed startled by the sudden movement and barked at them, hurrying so as not to be left behind.
---
Y/N walked back into the house with two bags of groceries in her arms. She heard the sound of a movie playing, but no voices. She rolled her eyes. It seemed Jimmy had tricked Bucky into watching his favorite movie.
She was about to call out to them. But she stopped short in her tracks at the display before her. Jurassic Park was playing on the television, but no one was watching it. Both of the boys were completely dead to the world. Bucky lay across the couch fast asleep. Jimmy’s tiny body was lying on top of Bucky, head resting over the super soldier’s heart. Bucky’s flesh arm was draped over the little boy’s back protectively, locking the small body to his chest. Jimmy’s flower crown was also still miraculously intact, sitting on Bucky’s head.
Y/N wondered how she could have ever considered keeping Bucky out of Jimmy’s life. And it never occurred to her that maybe Bucky needed the two of them as well.
Y/N tiptoed around the living room, put down the groceries, and quietly dashed upstairs to get her camera. She had to take a picture of the two boys before they woke up.
