The Young People of the Lucyverse ~ Part 2

W.C. Fields famously warned performers never to work with children or animals. Luckily for us, Lucille Ball consistently disregarded his advice. Here’s a look at some of the young performers and characters of the Lucyverse.

Jerry Carmichael (Jimmy Garrett) and Sherman Bagley (Ralph Hart) ~ Jerry was the son of Lucy and Ralph was Viv’s boy on “The Lucy Show”. Hart appeared in 44 episodes from 1962 to 1965. Garrett appeared in 55 episodes from 1962 to 1965. Jerry had a teenage sister named Chris and their father was deceased. Sherman was an only child whose dad Ralph was divorced his mother Vivian.

Chris’s young friend Susie (Lucie Arnaz) appeared in “Lucy is a Chaperone” (1962).

Susie turned up again as a waitress at Wilbur’s Ice Cream Parlor in “Lucy is a Soda Jerk” (1962). Desi Arnaz Jr. plays a customer, meaning that both of Lucille Ball’s real-life children appeared in the same episode.

In other episodes, Desi Arnaz Jr. played Billy Simmons, son of Audrey (Mary Jane Croft), a baseball player, football player, and cub scout. Billy was seen in “Lucy is a Referee” (1962), “Lucy and the Little League” (1963), “Lucy Visits the White House” (1963), and “Lucy and the Scout Trip” (1964, above), which also included Barry Livingston (as Arnold Mooney) and nine other uncredited scouts.

When the show shifted locations to Los Angeles leaving Susie and Billy behind, Lucie and Desi Jr. appeared as spectators in the grandstands in “Lucy At Marineland” (1965).

“Lucy Misplaces $2,000″ (1962) ~ Katie Sweet (Katie, Granddaughter of Woman on Bench) was just five years old when she filmed this episode, but had been acting since the age of two! Earlier that year, Sweet played the title role in the Desilu pilot “Sukuzi Beane”, which co-starred Jimmy Garrett and helped him land his role of Jerry Carmichael. Sweet left show business when she was 13.

“Together for Christmas” (1962) ~ Ends with Jerry and Sherman joining a group of carolers from the YMCA. The carolers were played by the real-life Mitchell Boys Choir.

“Lucy is a Referee” (1962) ~ In addition to Jerry, Sherman, and Billy, the cast featured Dennis Rush (left) as Tony Lawrence. The other football players are played by the Mighty Mites of the Venice Athletic Club, a pee-wee football team from Venice Beach, California.

“Lucy Goes to the White House” (1963) ~ Lucy and Viv take their cub scout troop to Washington DC to bring their sugar cube White House to President Kennedy. In addition to Jerry, Sherman, and Billy - the cast also includes 9 uncredited young boys as Cub Scout Pack 57.

Critic’s Choice (1963) ~ Ricky Kelman played John Ballentine, son of Parker (Bob Hope) and stepson of Angie (Lucille Ball), husband and wife theatre critics.

“Lucy Gets Locked in the Vault” (1963) ~ Barry Livingston plays Mr. Mooney’s son Arnold. Livingston is probably best remembered as Ernie, the adopted son on “My Three Sons.” His first appearance on that series was just one week after he played Arnold Mooney, a role he would return to in “Lucy and the Scout Trip” (1964).

When Livingston started on “My Three Sons” (also filmed at Desilu), the role of Arnold Mooney was taken over by Teddy Eccles in “Lucy’s Contact Lenses” (1964). Eccles began his show business career at the age of 4 and was 9 years old when he first appeared on “The Lucy Show.”

He will make two more appearances on the series as other characters, including as Harold, a young cadet in “Lucy At Marineland” (1965). Coincidentally, Eccles also appeared in two episodes of “My Three Sons” alongside Barry Livingston.

“Kiddie Parties, Inc.” (1963) ~ Lucy and Viv go into business hosting children’s birthday parties. Ronnie Dapo (David, above right) was a ten year-old actor whose first screen credit was in 1959 and his last in 1966. He made several appearances on “The Andy Griffith Show,” the second airing the very same night as this episode of “The Lucy Show.” There are 8 other young boys in the party scene.

“Lucy Becomes a Father” (1964) ~ Lucy accompanies Jerry on a father / son camping trip where Mr. Mooney is intent on making it so difficult that Lucy will pack up and go home. Five uncredited boys play the other sons on the trip. If Mr. Mooney’s son Arnold is among the boys, he is not singled out, nor are Barry Livingston or Ted Eccles in the cast.

“Lucy and the Stamp Collector” (1965) ~ Stamp collector Junior White is played by Flip Mark, who celebrated his 16th birthday the day after this episode first aired. He was born Philip Mark Goldberg in New York City. In 1965, he played a young Steve Olson on “Days of Our Lives.”

Flip Mark returned to “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy Goes to a Hollywood Premiere” (1966) as a kid selling maps to the stars homes. Curiously, this episode also mentions stamp collecting!

“Lucy the Choirmaster” (1965) ~ Lucy organizes a boys choir to entertain at the bank holiday show. The choir features her son Jimmy Garret as Jerry (his final appeareance), Ted Eccles as Barry, Robert Roter as Newton, Micahel Blake as Malcolm, and Theodore Miller as Stanley.

The other members of the choir (except for Mr. Mooney) were played by the St. Charles Boys Choir. Later that year, they formed the Disneyland Boys Choir and recorded the It’s a Small World album of folk songs still sold at Disney theme parks.

“Lucy the Robot” (1966) ~ Jay North, best known as the title character of “Dennis the Menace”, plays Mr. Mooney’s rambunctious nephew Wendell. Interestingly, Gale Gordon (Mr. Mooney) played Mr. Wilson on “Dennis the Menace” during its final season.

“Main Street U.S.A.” (1967) ~ Jackie Minty plays a Bancroft newspaper boy. Minty was a child actor who had done two episodes of “The Munsters.” A week after this episode of “The Lucy Show,” he appeared on “My Three Sons,” his final screen credit before leaving Hollywood.

Yours, Mine and Ours (1968) ~ Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda play parents of a blended family of 19 children. Among them are Tim Matheson, Gil Rogers, Nancy Howard, Morgan Brittany, Eric Shea, and Tracy Nelson.

BONUS KIDZ!

“Lucy Meets Mickey Rooney” (1966) ~ In an acting school show, Lucy plays Charlie Chaplin and Mickey Rooney plays 'The Kid’, a character based on Chaplin’s 1921 silent classic The Kid starring Jackie Coogan in the title role.

“Lucy the Stockholder” (1965) ~ Lucy, Viv and Mr. Mooney participate in an age regression experiement conducted by an eccentric doctor.

The Restaurants & Eateries of the Lucyverse ~ Part 2

Eating out brought Lucy to a wide variety of dining spots: sit down resaurants, diners, cafés and lunch counters are all here – in Lucy’s Dining Guide!

The Cavalier Restaurant ~ "Lucy is a Kangaroo for a Day” (1962)

When Lucy’s knit dress unravels, she has no choice but to don a kangaroo costume to deliver important papers to a fancy restaurant. A bowl of onion soup is spilled in her pouch!

The Elm Tree Inn ~ “Chris’s New Year’s Eve Party” (1962)

While Chris has a party for her teenage friends, Lucy and Viv bring their sons to the Elm Tree Inn for dinner and dancing. The boys especially enjoy the ice cream sundaes.

When Chris’s party is a dud, Lucy, Viv and Harry (Dick Martin) come to the rescue with entertainment, a silent movie sketch featuring Charlie Chaplin at a café.

The Pink Pheasant ~ “No More Double Dates” (1963)

When Lucy and Viv double date, there’s an argument about where to dine and the couples split up, fibbing about their plans. Harry suggests going to Tony DiBello’s for Italian food. DiBello’s will be featured in “Lucy Meets a Millionaire” (1964). Viv suggests The Country Kitchen in Ridgebury. Eddie wants to dine where George Washington slept – the 300 year-old Colonial Inn. Lucy makes one more suggestion: The Café Tambourine, which is probably a gypsy tea room.

Naturally they end up at the same classy restaurant: The Pink Pheasant. So that Viv and Eddie (Don Briggs) don’t discover their deception, Lucy hides under the table. [The Pink Pheasant restaurant is really just a re-dressed version of The Cavalier, a restaurant seen earlier in the season in “Lucy Is A Kangaroo for a Day”. They even use the same chairs!]

Wilbur’s Ice Cream Parlor ~ “Lucy is a Soda Jerk” (1963)

When Chris can’t make it to work at Wilbur’s Ice Cream Parlor, Lucy and Viv fill in. While Lucy works the counter, Viv handles table service, waiting on patrons played by James Gonzales and Desi Arnaz Jr.

Charlie’s Café ~ “Lucy Visits the White House” (1963)

When the train to Washington DC stops in Greenview, Lucy darts into a trackside café to steal their sugar cubes to rebuld the model of the White House her cub scouts are bringing to President Kennedy. Charlie’s menu includes coffee, sundaes, hamburgers, and bacon & tomato sandwiches.

Tony DiBello’s ~ “Lucy Meets a Millionaire” (1964)

Lucy’s dates Umberto Fabrini, an Italian millionaire who doesn’t speak English. Naturally, he takes her to an Italian restaurant - Tony DiBello’s. Tony is played by Jay Novello. Novello is associated with Italian food having played Mario, the "Visitor from Italy” turned pizza chef on “I Love Lucy.”

Umberto (Cesare Danova) orders Tortellini Bolognese, which - thanks to Lucy - ends up in his lap!

Fleeing the restaurant to make a phone call, Lucy and Mr. Mooney pass an un-named café .

Four Corners Café ~ “Lucy and Viv Open a Restaurant” (1964)

The abandoned and run down café offers Raviola (another name for ravioli) and has a Sugar Bowl Special.

Despite their renovations, the café fails to bring in any customers. To rescue their investment, Lucy and Viv hastily reinvent their investment.

LUCY: “How about making it a Spanish restaurant?” VIV: “Great! How about calling it El Fiasco.”

They settle on a Gypsy Tea Room, serving Hungarian fare.

OLGA the COOK: “Push the Hungarian goulash.”

When the Gypsy Tea Room doesn’t work out, they transform it into The Colonial Inn, an Early American themed restaurant, complete with the George and Martha as greeters (aka Lucy and Viv).

OLGA the COOK: “Push the Yankee Pot Roast.”

Danfield Train Depot Snack Bar ~ “Lucy is a Process Server” (1964)

The chalkboard says they offer Roast Beef Sandwiches, Hot Dogs, and Hamburgers. Stafford Repp plays the bored counterman. Mr. Mooney orders a hot dog and accidentally squirts himself with mustard. [Oops! Gale Gordon actually is eating a hamburger, not a hot dog.]

Restaurant ~ “Lucy the Meter Maid” (1964) and “Lucy the Coin Collector” (1964)

The streets of Danfield featured these same no-name restaurant windows.

The Park Royal Restaurant ~ “Lucy Meets Danny Kaye” (1964)

Lucy pursues the star into a fancy restaurant, where she succeeds in dumping a tray of food on his head!

Coffee Shop ~ “Lucy and the Ceramic Cat” (1965)

After shopping for sales at Bigelow’s, Lucy and Viv duck into a coffee shop for a cup of tea. They run into Mr. Mooney, who is having liver for lunch.

The Golden Greek ~ “Lucy and The Golden Greek” (1965)

Lucy and Mary Jane double date at a Greek restaurant. Lucy’s date Howard suggests the moussaka. Lucy thinks he is talking about the musicians!

International Supper Club ~ “Lucy and the Undercover Agent” (1965)

After seeing a James Bond movie, Mr. Mooney takes Lucy and the Countess (Ann Sothern) for dinner at a fancy restaurant. There Lucy sees a man she believes to be a spy.

Seafood House ~ “Lucy and Bob Crane” (1966)

Crane takes “simple and unassuming” Lucy out for a lobster dinner at a “simple and unassmuing” restaurant decorated in a nautical theme. Crane orders them both lobster.

LUCY: “Lobster is so ‘simple and unassuming’.”

The Studio Café ~ “Lucy and John Wayne” (1966)

While Wayne is filming a movie, Lucy has lunch with him at the commissary. Thanks to Lucy, Wayne ends up with a face full of catsup!

Hamburger Hovel ~ “Lucy Visits Viv” (1966)

To find a wayward Danfield boy, Lucy and Viv visit the Sunset Strip, where they search a biker bar. Motorcycles are parked in front of a burger joint called Hamburger Hovel, home of the original Bikerburger! The eatery’s name is a pun on the real-life

Hamburger Haven

on Santa Monica Boulevard.

Doc Putnam’s Drug Store ~ “Main Street U.S.A.” & “Lucy Puts Main Street on the Map” (1967)

In Bancroft, Lucy and Mel (Mel Torme) order two Strawberry Ice Cream Sodas (Mel: “In a clean glass”). Doc Porter is played by Paul Winchell.

Restaurant ~ “Lucy Meets the Law” (1967)

After shopping (and before getting arrested), Lucy and Mary Jane pass by an un-named restaurant on their way to the bus stop.

Phil’s Fatboy Burgers ~ “Lucy Gets Involved” (1968)

Lucy takes a part-time job as a carhop at a drive-in burger joint where she must deliver food on roller skates! Lucy’s boss, Mr. Burton, is played by Jackie Coogan.

The Dining Room of the Lafayette Men's Club ~ “Lucy Meets Sid Caesar” (1968)

Lucy order. chicken cacciatore, baked lasagna and broccoli with Hollandaise sauce. Mr. Mooney orders roast turkey with oyster dressing, apple fritters, candied yams, and homemade cornbread. Sid Caesar (aka Frankie the Forger) orders cottage cheese and skim milk - because he’s on a diet.

BONUS RESTAURANT(S)

“The Danny Kaye Show” (1962)

In this Emmy Award-winning special, Kaye and Ball play three couples visiting three themed restaurants of different cuisines: Japanese, French, and Tahitian.

Kaye introduces all three sketches as himself. The first sketch is done without dialogue. At a Japanese Restaurant, Lucy has trouble with chopsticks, a bowl of fried noodles, and lychees.

In the second sketch, this time with dialogue, co-workers Miss Naomi Dinsmore (Lucy) and Charlie(Kaye), are on a first date at an elegant French Restaurant.

Kaye:“Where the menu is in French, and the waiters are in French, and the prices are insane. The food is not only in French, but in Brandy, Cognac, and pure alcohol. You can get drunk just by breathing the napkin.”

Lastly, married couple the Andersons go to a tropical restaurant named The Tahitian Typhoon.

Kaye: “These are usually, the most exotic, the most authentic, the most uncomfortable, and… the most popular.”

It lives up to its name when a sudden downpour drenches the couple. On the way through the tropical foliage, Mrs. Anderson steps in quicksand.

Mr. Anderson: “Don't struggle, you'll only sink faster. I learned that in the Amazon.” Mrs. Anderson: “The Amazon?” Mr. Anderson: “Yeah, it's a restaurant in Cleveland.”

Refusing to pay the check since they didn’t eat anything, the angry tribal maître d’ claps his hands, mutters an incantation, and shrinks the Andersons to pygmy size!

EXCLUSIVE: One year ago we told you that a second season of John le Carré adaptation The Night Manager was quietly being developed under the codename Steelworks.

Now, Deadline can reveal that the BBC and new co-pro partner Amazon have gone big on a supercharged two-season order of the thriller, with Tom Hiddleston returning to lead, Hugh Laurie coming back as EP and with a new director in I Hate Suzie’s Georgi Banks-Davies. A third season has also been greenlit. David Farr returns as writer and Stephen Garrett is showrunner.

The Night Manager Season 2 will begin filming later this year and will pick up with Hiddleston’s Jonathan Pine eight years after the explosive finale of Season 1, going beyond the original book, which was written by the celebrated British writer in 1993. Additional plot details are being kept under wraps and there is not yet confirmation as to whether EP Laurie’s Richard Roper, who was last seen in the back of a paddy wagon driven by arms buyers who were not best pleased with him, will return to star. Hiddleston will also EP and will discuss in more depth on tonight’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Produced by The Ink Factory in association with Character 7, Demarest Films and 127 Wall, and in co-production with Spanish partner Nostromo Pictures, The Night Manager Season 2 was sold to Amazon by Fifth Season. The first was co-produced with AMC.

New director Banks-Davies, a BAFTA-nominee who takes over from Susanne Bier, has credits including I Hate Suzie, Garfield and upcoming Netflix series Kaos.

The Night Manager Season 1 was a huge success, watched by millions and winning multiple BAFTAs, Emmys and Golden Globes including best actor for Hiddleston. Also starring Tom Hollander, Olivia Colman and Elizabeth Debicki, it followed Pine – who ran a luxury hotel in Cairo – as he attempted to infiltrate the inner circle of Roper’s crime syndicate after being hired by Foreign Office task force manager Angela Burr.

The first season was commissioned more than 10 years ago and the show has since been remade in India, lapping the UK version by swiftly having a Season 2 greenlit for Disney+ Hotstar in May last year.

Simon Cornwell and Stephen Cornwell, le Carré’s sons who run The Ink Factory, said Season 1 proved “a landmark moment for the golden era of television – uniting on-screen and behind-the-camera talent at the top of their game – and an audience reception which was beyond our wildest imagining.”

They added: “Revisiting the story of Pine also means going beyond the events of John le Carré’s original work: that is a decision we have not taken lightly, but his compelling characters and the vision David has for their next chapter were irresistible.”

Amazon MGM Studios Head of Television Vernon Sanders said: “We are elated to bring additional seasons of The Night Manager to our Prime Video customers. The combination of terrific source material, the wonderful team at The Ink Factory, a great writer in David Farr, an award-winning director in Georgi Banks-Davies, as well as the talented cast truly make the series the full package.”

Hiddleston said: “The first series of The Night Manager was one of the most creatively fulfilling projects I have ever worked on. The depth, range and complexity of Jonathan Pine was, and remains, a thrilling prospect.”

BBC content boss Charlotte Moore added: “After years of fervent speculation I’m incredibly excited to confirm that The Night Manager is returning to the BBC for two more series.”

The Night Manager series two is created and executive produced by Farr, based on the characters created by le Carré. Additional executive producers include Garrett for Character 7, Banks-Davies, Laurie and Hiddleston; Joe Tsai and Arthur Wang for 127 Wall; Stephen and Simon Cornwell, Michele Wolkoff, and Tessa Inkelaar for The Ink Factory; Adrián Guerra for Nostromo Pictures; William D. he pathos of Old Hollywood emerges in this dazzling collection of black-and-white photos from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Celebrity photojournalist Garrett captured his subjects at nightclubs, industry soirées and parties-an in-between world where stars tried to enjoy their private lives while still very much on public display. Garrett maintained a studied reserve toward the celebrities (he made a point of never addressing them by their first names) and his photos have a appealing mixture of intimacy and detachment as the celebrities drink, laugh and carouse while tricked out in formal wear and immaculate hair-dos. He is especially fascinated with Hollywood divas like Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Leslie Caron and Ava Gardner; his photos show the warmth of these vibrant personalities while hinting at the strain they suffered in maintaining their glamorous facades. The photos are accompanied by piquant reminiscences: of the wise-cracking Zsa-zsa Gabor shoving her way into every picture frame, the lovable Jimmy Durante shoving his way into oncoming traffic, and the thuggish Milton Berle shoving hapless underlings out of his dressing room. In one tense picture worth a thousand words, a vampy Lauren Bacall embraces Van Heflin while her husband, Humphrey Bogart, looks on ("I heard Bogey say, in a chilled tone, 'Van, that's close enough'"). In these lively, unlacquered but sympathetic portraits, celebrities emerge as flawed, human and never entirely free of self-consciousness.
