Stand Side by Side
Madney | 760 words | read on AO3
Chim wakes slowly, the way he’s so rarely able to with his job. He gives a little stretch, and a grin slowly crawls across his face at the burn of well-used muscles. Turning onto his back, he reaches out for Maddie, but the other side of the bed is empty. The sheets are still warm though, so she hasn’t been up for long.
He grabs his boxers from the pile of clothes on the floor, stepping into them on his way out of the room. He finds Maddie in the kitchen, staring intently at the coffee maker.
“Is that my shirt,” he asks, and chuckles when she jumps and spins to face him.
“Howie, you scared me! You know I haven’t had any coffee yet. And my clothes seem to be missing,” she says pointedly and turns back to staring as the coffee drips slowly into the pot.
Chim reaches out and snakes his arms around her waist, pulling her back firmly to his chest. “You look better in my clothes than I do,” he whispers.
Maddie lets out a breathy moan when nibbles on her neck, trailing light kisses over to her cheek until she turns her head to meet his mouth. They share a few short, soft kisses until they’re interrupted by the being of the coffee maker.
Chim laughs when she immediately pulls away and grabs her favorite mug. That thing has been living in his kitchen for months now. She’d only stayed the night a few times before the mug had made an appearance. It was a gift from Buck, he knew, gifted to Maddie on National Sibling Day. Because of course, those two celebrated with gifts. He’d been guilted into buying a card for Albert, but he had drawn the line at a gift.
While he waits for Maddie to doctor her coffee to her liking, he wanders to tor cupboard to grab a mug of his own. Maybe he should make something for breakfast? Nah, he could probably tempt Maddie back to bed after her coffee. They could always go out for brunch later. Much later.
With their coffees in hand, they settled together on the couch and Maddie draped her legs over his lap. Chim settled his free hand on her bare thigh, thumb gently stroking as they sat in the peaceful silence.
“We should tell Buck, Albert, and the others,” Maddie says, breaking the silence. Chim studies her face, searching for any hint of doubt or uncertainty. He’s surprised when he only finds resolve.
“You sure, babe? You’ve been pretty determined to keep things to ourselves.”
“I’m sure. I mean, if you’re sure. Are you sure?” The fingers of her free hand are all twisted up in the hem of his shirt as she fidgets nervously.
“Maddie, we can tell everyone we know that we’re dating. Hell, we can announce it to everyone we meet if that will make you happy. I understand why you wanted to keep it private for a while. But I think you’re right, at least about Buck. You know he already knows. He’s been on to us for a while. We can keep denying it, but I think we’ll be hurting him if we do.”
“I know, and that’s the last thing I want to do. I’m pretty sure Albert already knows too. Let’s just…tell them all. Things have been going great, right?” she asks.
“Of course, we’re solid Maddie. I’m completely on board with telling everyone. How about at karaoke night on Thursday? The whole team will be there, plus Athena, Karen, and Albert. We’ll tell them all at once,” he says.
She smiles at him, beautiful and bright, and his breath catches. He loves to see her happy, and he’ll do anything it takes to keep her that way. He tucks a few strands of hair behind her ear and she grabs his hand and laces their fingers together.
“Well, now that we’ve got that all settled, whatever shall we do with the rest of our day?” Maddie gives him a once-over, eyes heavy-lidded as she takes a last sip of coffee and sets her mug down.
“I could probably come up with a few ideas,” he says, slowly sliding his hand higher up her thigh. A sharply indrawn breath lets him know he’s getting to her and he smirks.
“Prove it,” she teases, jumping up and sauntering towards the bedroom.
Dropping his mug on the coffee table, Chim leaps up to follow her. Everything else could wait, right now they only need each other.
