Something I realized about Digimon Tamers
Yesterday we were talking about diversity in Anime/Manga and how Japan often tries to ignore minorities. And during that talk, I just suddenly had a realization hit me: There is a good chance that out of the three main characters neither is completely ethically Japanese.
We know, of course, that Jianliang is Chinese-Japanese, with his father being Chinese. (Fun fact: It was originally planned that he and his father would speak Chinese together, but it was not done in the end as the kids watching the show might struggle reading so many subtitles.)
We know that Takato's cousin (who seems to be from his mother's side) is Ryukyuan, the Indigenous culture of Okinawa. Meaning that there is a good chance that Takato is at least part-Ryukyuan. Which is neat.
And Ruki? Well, this one is mostly me going out on a limp. But... The original five Digimon seasons do use "brighter hair" as a shorthand for "of European decent", which would mean that her father (who we never meet) is probably European. Making her half-Japanese, too.
And yeah. Given that we so rarely see that - and here we have three main characters for which that is true?
Yeah. That is super interesting.
And I absolutely will write some fanfics on this. o.o

@digiweek 2022 day 1: beginning
tell us about a character (you love)
Lee Jenrya is one of the main characters of Digimon Tamers. He is the third child of four siblings from a Chinese/Japanese family. He met Terriermon while playing the Digimon computer game, saving his future partner from an enemy attack after slashing the Blue Card. Once he got into a serious argument with a neighbour child and accidentally injured the child with his Tai Chi skill, so he then practiced self-restraint—only to realise someday that there were battles he needs to fight.
Jenrya (ジェンリャ) is the Japanese form of his Chinese name, Jianliang (健良). He is also known as Henry Wong (English), 곽소룡 Kwak Soryong (Korean), and رافع Rafi (Arabic).
