Threefold
(For @ladyteldra, who shoved me into this unexpected rabbit hole, but then stuffed it full of content to make me happy)
No one had noticed during the war, as wars were rather distracting. But it was hard not to notice when they got home.
What was left of home; it was still a work in progress.
At first Jiang Yanli excused it away as the magic of Lotus Pier going awry because of what it had been through, but by the second week of reconstruction she tracked down a copy of the Entail from one of the surviving caches.
It shouldn’t have mattered.
Jiang Cheng was the chosen Sect Heir, their Father had made that clear when Jiang Cheng turned fifteen, and Lotus Pier should know that.
(Except Lotus Pier would have felt Mother, then Father, then Jiang Cheng lose their cores here. It might have thought… Perhaps that would explain why…)
When she gently probes Wei Wuxian for his thoughts on their misbehaving inheritance, his face goes stricken and over the next week he dives into the scrolls himself, more thoroughly than she had.
Jiang Yanli had not meant to distract Wei Wuxian from his own self-loathing and his eerie ghost-brides, but that is what it amounts to, in the end.
“Do you think,” Wei Wuxian says finally, over dinner, eyes red and wild like he’s been drinking (clearly distinct, to her, from the red and wild from raising ghosts), “That when Wen Zhuliu. When he – that it broke what marks you as heir?”
Jinag Cheng stiffens at the reminder, and frowns at their brother. “Would that…? But BSSR fixed it.”
“What if it’s not the same core as before?” asks Wei Wuxian, vehemently. “Doesn’t it” he waves a hand towards their surroundings, “feel like it did when we were younger? Before you came of age?”
That’s exactly what it was, Jiang Yanli realizes. The magic of Lotus Pier felt familiar for all it was acting slantwise; it was exactly how it had been before the heir had been named.
“What does that mean, then?” asks Jiang Cheng, standing up. “I’m not the heir, then?”
“You shouldn’t be the heir,” Wei Wuxian says. “You should be the Sect Leader.”
“You’re saying the Lotus Pier doesn’t want me,” says Jiang Cheng. Jiang Yanli lays a hand on Jiang Cheng’s elbow.
Before she can speak a word, Wei Wuxian says, voice final, “No. I’m saying I think the Lotus Pier thinks you died.”
Their ravaged, gutted home is recovering steadily, with new disciples, new responsibilities, new buildings.
Their new Sect Leader and his right hand aren’t doing so well.
“If it thinks you’ll do better, then fine! Be the sect leader!” Jiang Cheng had yelled at Wei Wuxian one day, terrifying Wei Wuxian who insisted he didn’t have the right nor did he want to, and setting off quite a row (“Oh, so Lotus Pier just isn’t good enough for you, huh? Where DO you want to go then?”). Naturally, that escalated into a more physical fight, and when punches were landed and brothers elbowed in the gut and flipped onto their backs, swords were drawn (“You still won’t use your sword? What if I run you through with mine? Pick up your sword, goddamn you!”) which came to a screeching, horrific halt when Suibian unsheathed for an incensed Jiang Cheng.
Wei Wuxian had a lot to explain.
Jiang Yanli doesn’t think Jiang Cheng will ever forgive Wei Wuxian for this, but she patches them both up as best she can, listens while each rants about the idiocy and foolishness of the other. She talks down one little brother from his stated plan to find Wen Qing and make her switch the cores back, and coaxes the other one to rest with promises that she wouldn’t let Jiang Cheng try something like that while he sleeps (“I promise, you can sleep now, A-Xian, I won’t let him.” “Oh but HE can, HE can decide for me-!”)
“Since we’ve decided not to keep secrets from family,” she tells them, after a week of indulging them both in their childishness, “you should both know. The Jiang family has, now, in the direct line me and Jiang Cheng. And then there’s Wei Wuxian, son of Wei Changze, who was a shu-son of Grandfather’s and, technically, broke the oath he made when he left the sect that he would not have children of his own.”
Their faces, when that finally sinks in, makes her giggle.
[“So you could be Sect Leader, since Lotus Pier would accept you. This explains so much about Mother.”
“I told you that Uncle Jiang wanted it to be you! But…yeah. It really does.”]
[“Wait, so the Waterborne Abyss tried to grab you in Gusu… do you think that it wanted…”
(That particular conversation ended abruptly when the plank Jiang Cheng was standing on crumbles, dumping him into the river below.)]
[“Without Uncle Jiang’s mark on Jiang Cheng showing Lotus Pier who the heir is, I think it’s confused about who to pick,” Wei Wuxian tells them, after more time with scrolls and an unexpected visit to Meishan Yu and Gusu Lan sects. “Should it go with strength, or primogeniture? Dad was older than Uncle Jiang, but Shijie’s older than me. And I don’t have a core – but mine’s not gone, it’s still-”
Wei Wuxian shuts himself up before Jiang Cheng can, that time.]
For some reason, the issue seems to weigh more greatly on her and A-Xian than A-Cheng. Perhaps because even though Lotus Pier had not yet acknowledged Jiang Cheng as Sect Leader, the Jiang Sect had. And Sect-Leaderly duties did not wait on the convenience of an ancient dwelling and what may or may not dwell beneath the watery foundations.
Which is why it’s surprising when it’s Jiang Cheng who finds them the solution.
“Are you sure?” she has to ask him.
“Honestly, I always imagined that when I’m Sect Leader, Wei Wuxian would busy-body his way into doing half my work anyway. The only difference is that you can stay here at Lotus Pier and help instead of marrying out.” The sect leader of a clan could not, after all, marry out.
“You should thank me for getting the engagement called off, then!” says Wei Wuxian. “Can you imagine? If we went through with this, then we’d all be engaged to the peacock.”
“A-Xian,” she chides, and her brother looks at her sheepishly. The grin is more naturally like himself, and not like he’s forcing himself to act like he once did.
“Is that okay with you, A-Jie?” asks Jiang Cheng.
“Yes,” she tells them. She had wanted a husband, children, a family of her own. But asked to make this choice; her sect or herself, her brothers or a family that one day might be. She knew her answer. “When shall we do it?”
In the aftermath, very little changes.
The bemused Jiang disciples are told to address both Young Mistress Jiang and Wei-shixiong as Sect Leader also, which takes them some getting used to, but they adapt soon enough.
The civilians from Yunmeng think it’s splendid, and take great pride in their three Sect Leaders.
The other sects receive a letter informing them that Jiang Yanli, Jiang Wanyin, and Wei Wuxian were ‘…henceforth by mutual agreement, to be recognized as one entity, encompassing legal and spiritual dimensions alike. As leaders of the Jiang sect, they will jointly bear the responsibilities and obligations attached to this esteemed position.’ Naturally this brings about some interested speculation in their allied sects.
[“Are you alright, Wangji? Do not worry, there is no need for you and Xichen to do likewise, it is an old ritual meant to rejoin the branches of a Clan that are at risk of a schism, without the messy business of pruning one side to disallow heirs, or line adoption."]
[“How utterly absurd. That girl, and the Ghost Flute, to be acknowledged as Sect Leader Jiang, when little Jiang Cheng can barely fill the role himself? What is the world coming to. Fetch us some wine, boy.”]
[“No that is not a euphemism for them deciding to have an incestuous polyamorous marriage, Huaisang! It probably has to do with that thing they don’t talk about; though why the Wen were not eaten when they stepped foot in Lotus Pier we’ll never know.”]

thinking about mdzs parents in modern houses
the jin would definitely be that couple who have this big ass massion, with a gigantic master bedroom, but each would have their own separate walk-in closet and bathroom, and a bed big enough to never touch each other while sleeping, their only son's bedroom on the other side of the house, away from them
the jiang would sleep in different bedrooms, children close to them and only 1 guest bedroom because they're not obligated to welcome people to sleep in the same house
nie a-die would, absolutely, make a custom extra big bed so he can sleep with his beloved wives, the children somewhat way from their bedroom because it's convenient for their night life, they also have this gigantic tub on their suite so the three can use it at the same time
the lan.... would probably sleep in the same bedroom, but in different beds, like those 60's couples, children close to them so they can keep an eye
the wei would have this little two bed one bath cottage 1h from the city where they grow their own vegetables and probably have a goat, they probably have a spreadsheet/blackboard somewhere in the house about the time each can use the bathroom and for how long; would they have solar panels? 🤔
and their children would probably live in the same area/neighborhood/building, with different consistency levels of visiting their parents

so spiritual baby a-yuan finds jzx really funny, right? so jzx has found an acceptable outlet for his romantic feelings - buttering up this bao. He's bringing a-yuan presents, and being a little silly to make a-yuan giggle. this has the main affect of making all the yunmeng sibs feel a bit more charitable towards him, but especially jyl. There's the bonus effect of baby a-yuan being less likely to make weird noises at night because he's bored.
Jin Zixuan, holding A-Yuan up at arm's length: If I promise to ask your A-Niang and jiufu for advice about A-Li's presents instead of buying Generic Expensive Things, will you stop making bullfrog noises at me when I'm not expecting it?
A-Yuan, in baby: Perhaps I will, and perhaps I won't. It depends on the quality of the gifts :)

Guess who is writing a fix-it au where everyone lives (except for the bad people) because fuck you the Yunmeng sibs deserve the world here’s a working summary on what i’m trying to do:
Rumors are swirling after the fight Jiang Cheng has with Wei Wuxian that leaves the former with a broken arm and the latter with a stab wound to the abdomen. Both of them are stubborn but they are brothers so deep to the core that neither can truly abandon the other. Jiang Cheng, Jiang Yanli, and surprisingly Jin Zixuan gather a group of those they trust the most to right the wrongs that thus far only Wei Wuxian had been brave enough to point out. But first, they must help the idiot survive and convince him that they aren't going to leave him ever. Family will never be just blood.

Had some thoughts ab vague urban fantasy vampire Xicheng au
the Jiang family r apothecaries and serve both humans and non-humans. The Yu line has been p involved in criminal underbelly type stuff but Yu Ziyuan stopped doing that several yrs before they had kids together. She still teaches her children how to defend themselves.
Wei Wuxian is great at experimenting and creating new elixirs and shit, Yanli excels at putting customers at ease and figuring out what options there r for whatever help theyre seeking, and Jiang Cheng is bookkeeper/paper work extraordinaire.
YZY and JFM still hv a troubled marriage bcut the fact that since the 3 siblings started working, they fill different but essential roles and work in tandem at the shop, its gotten a bit better.
In this part of the city, non-humans r p chill and the humans who r aware of them r like “oh thats just my flatmate Marleen shes chill but like i hv to hose her down after she comes back covered in mud and twigs from a full moon romp”
So hunters r not particularly well liked even by humans bc of History, but they deal w monsters and demons that ur average person cant.
Lan Zhan walks into the shop one day looking to restock his toxin antidotes and Wei Wuxian is immediately and obliviously smitten and invites him to various parties and shit, to which he declines but keeps finding reasons to visit the shop and see Wei Ying <3
Lan Xichen is in the depression zone bc he was tricked by a black market trader (JGY?? Idk yet) into killing several innocent non humans and is seriously doubting whether he can make sound judgements and actually protect ppl. LWJ recently made him move back into their shared apartment but hes still hving a rough time.
the Wens r a vampire clan, and the Wen siblings frequent the shop too and deliver them warnings that Wen Chao is going to try to extort them
after the Jiangs refuse to give in to their extortion attempts, they burn down their shop. Their parents r alive but comatose and the siblings go into hiding
Wen goons r ab to nab WWX but JC sacrifices himself and gets killed and turned.
WWX gets LWJ’s help since the Wen extortion stuff was already a big no-no but an attack and kidnapping like this is under the Lan hunter’s perviee. WWX goes apeshit and takes 10000 psychic dmg when he goes to rescue his babie brother only to find a feral and hungry babie vampire JC.
JC is subdued and put into needle coma by Wen Qing while and WWX recuperates before going to make Wen Chao regret being born but uh oh! The Wens hv gone into hiding now that the Lans r involved.
WWX feels at fault for JC getting kidnapped and turned bc He is supposed to b Protective Older Brother and convinces Wen Qing to bag his own blood to feed JC. Yanli also offers her own blood, altho she cant donate as much.
JC eventually is pulled out of the coma, feeds, becomes lucid, and then falls in depression times as he struggled to come to turns w being a vampire now and he is an extremely hungee boy bc the Wens did something to him.
The Yunmeng sibs stay in hiding for a bit. Yanli salvages what she can from the family shop and w Wen Qing’s help, still meets w clients. WWX runs himself ragged trying to donate enough blood to keep JC lucid and sated and also trying to come up w a tonic to suppress his unnaturally strong hunger.
JC is an anxious mess wrt losing control again and also how WWX is exhausting himself w how much blood hes giving him. JC does what shop paperwork he can while learning the vampire basics from Wen Ning.
WWX finally perfects a tonic to suppress JC’s hunger and is able to recover physically and while they both love each other a lot, things r a bit rocky rn.
Now that hes feeling better, WWX starts to spend the weekends w LWJ looking for the Wens. JYL by chance gets into contact w JZX, werewolf heir to a Business Place or sth and starts trying to negotiate a deal to acquire funds to rebuild the shop while they also both navigate their own awkward mutual-but-believes-its-unrequited-attraction.
WWX and LWJ dont come back one day, and arent answering their phones. JC suspects that theyve finally gotten their heads out of their ass and r fucking. He has negative desire to bug them while Thats Happening but hes unexpectedly run out of hunger tonic and WWX’s notes r illegible.
So he finds LWJ’s address and breaks into their apartment, LXC is just vibing, lying down in bed, w the lights off when he hears someone pick the lock. The Lans hv a fair amount of enemies so hes ready to beat someones ass, esp if theyre the reason Wangji hasnt come home.
LXC catches JC by surprise and pins him against the wall in a kind of sexy way and after a lot of snark from JC LXC’s like oh ok ur chill and lets him go. Theyre both v worried ab their brothers and JC eventually explains his situation and LXC offers himself for JC to feed on while they look for them.

CQL-verse! The characters have the same age gaps between them as their actors and actresses! Wwx and Jyl are the same age, jc is 5 years younger than them. Lxc is 3 years younger than wwx&jyl and lwj is 3 years younger than him. Nmj is two years older than wwx&jyl and nhs is 8 years younger than him and the same age as lwj. (1/2)
Meng Yao is 2 years older than nhs and jzx is 2 years older than MY. I'm leaving the Wen Sibs out of this because otherwise WN would be the same age as wwx and WQ would be 4 years younger than him. But hey! If you want to go with that, go crazy! I was thinking more of Yunmeng Sibs focus, but I will be happy with anything! (2/2)

Untamed
Nie Mingjue hated the Wen sect to the point of death and war, but he had always had trouble hating sad and gentle Wen Ning.
Wen Ning was technically his peer – there were only two years between them in age – and therefore capable of the same sorts of responsibilities and duties towards righteousness as Nie Mingjue, meaning that he ought to hate him as much as all the rest. But at the same time, Wen Ning was only part of the main branch family indirectly, a ward of Wen Ruohan; he was constantly suppressed and even tormented by Wen Chao, the eldest son of that family. If anything, it seemed almost as if he’d been brought into the family just to act as the family’s scapegoat, the inferior copy that was so hapless that he made that self-indulgent hedonist Wen Chao appear somewhat competent in contrast.
Nie Mingjue couldn’t imagine treating any of his own cousins that way.
He and Wen Chao were often compared, both being about the same age, and their young brothers were of similar age as well, both of them only fourteen; this juxtaposition made sure that every single person in the cultivation world talk of them in the same breath. Nie Mingjue always came out the better in the comparison, and Wen Xu the same for his, which in the minds of most people balanced out, but which caused Wen Chao no end of rage. He knew he couldn’t take out his anger on the talented Wen Xu and so took out on poor Wen Ning instead.
Nie Mingjue hated the Wen sect.
He did not hate Wen Ning.
Wen Ning, who should not be here.
“Please,” Wen Ning said, nearly in tears, as he threw himself down to the floor in front of Nie Mingjue. He’d burst into the room in the inn Nie Mingjue was staying at, the guards that no sect leader could do without no matter what they wanted following close behind in alarm until Nie Mingjue had waved them off with a gesture; he’d been panting so hard that he’d only just now caught his breath. “Please help this useless older brother do one good thing with his life.”
Alarmed, Nie Mingjue reached out and caught Wen Ning by the shoulders, pulling him to stand and even forgetting himself enough to reach forward with a sleeve to dab away the tears staining the other man’s face.
“What is it?” he asked, feeling anxiety curdling in his gut. He’d spoken with Wen Ning before during the discussion conferences, both when he was younger and even, in a few stolen moments, after he became sect leader; he knew Wen Ning had a steady personality, if a weak one from all the bullying he endured, and that he was not given to unnecessary hysterics. If he could tolerate Wen Chao’s endless torment with a faint smile and a don’t worry sect leader Nie once you’re used to it it’s more funny than anything else, then what could make him act like this? “What is that you need help with? I do not understand.”
Wen Ning looked tired. He always had, his health had always been poor, but now it seemed worse than ever; there were circles under his eyes, and Nie Mingjue had no idea how he’d managed to get away from the Nightless City to come find him. The town he was currently in was close to the border the Qinghe Nie shared with Qishan Wen, but it was still an effort, especially for someone like Wen Ning. He might be a member of the Wen family by name, but his freedom was significantly curtailed, and it wasn’t only because he was sickly.
“My little sister is going to be attending the lectures at the Cloud Recesses,” Wen Ning said.
“The - Lan sect lectures?” Nie Mingjue repeated blankly. It was a stupid thing to say; of course it was the Lan sect’s lectures, who else would give lectures at the Cloud Recesses? And yet, at the same time – “The Wen sect hasn’t gone to them in generations.”
“Sect Leader Wen asked A-Qing to look for something,” Wen Ning said. “I don’t know what. He talks to her more than he talks to me, when she’s treating him with acupuncture and other such things – he only wants blood relations treating him now, so she’s passing along what she can do, the doctors all say she’s talented – he told her something, I think, but I don’t know what, he doesn’t talk to me…and she doesn’t talk to me, either.”
“She’s sixteen, they’re like that,” Nie Mingjue said, trying to offer comfort, but he didn’t like the sound of that – Wen Ruohan growing reliant on the medical skills of a teenager, talking with her as if she were an adult…it didn’t speak well to the Chief Cultivator’s state of mind. “So she’s going to go spy on them?”
“She is. And maybe more. There’s – there’s something back in the Nightless City, something Sect Leader Wen is refining in order to increase his power. Whatever it is, it’s powerful and evil.” Wen Ning looked paler than usual, somehow. “It was something that was kept in a cave near our village when we were younger, once. Sect Leader Wen took it away to study, and it made something go crazy, I got hurt, and my parents – anyway, it doesn’t matter. I can’t go near it without losing my senses, so I really don’t know anything about it. But I know that Sect Leader Wen only has a piece – and the Lan sect has another.”
Lan Xichen had never mentioned such a thing, but then again, he wasn’t really old enough that Nie Mingjue would expect him to know everything about his sect – he was after all a full five years younger than Nie Mingjue, three years younger than Wen Ning; he was still only seventeen, having only just graduated from his uncle’s classes the year before. He was only very technically sect leader, in the same way Nie Mingjue had only been technically sect leader after his father’s death, although unlike Lan Xichen Nie Mingjue had fought his way to step up to the task for real early on. He himself was only barely considered an adult at the age of twenty-two; it was no surprise that in the Lan sect, which had Lan Qiren to rely on, Lan Xichen might not know it all.
Or perhaps he knew, and simply didn’t say. Each sect was entitled to its secrets.
“What are you thinking?” Nie Mingjue asked.
“I’m thinking that my sister is constantly afraid for me, even though she’s younger than me,” Wen Ning said solemnly. “I’m thinking that she will break her own principles into pieces to protect me. I’m thinking that she’ll find whatever it is, or find a hint to it, and then Wen Chao will take his forces to burn the Cloud Recesses to the ground in search of it.”
Nie Mingjue could see that.
He didn’t want to, but he could.
“My brother is attending those lectures,” he said blankly. Nie Huaisang was there right now. He could be in danger – no, he would be in danger. Nie Huaisang wasn’t a good cultivator, and at fourteen, he was just a baby. Nie Mingjue had sent Meng Yao with him, nominally as his attendant, but in fact to get the benefit of the classes himself and also bully Nie Huaisang into actually learning something – he’d brought Meng Yao into the Nie sect after Jin Zixuan, full of guilt over how his father had treated a boy only two years his junior, had sent him a letter beseeching him for help following Meng Yao’s public and humiliating rejection from Jinlin Tower – but Meng Yao was only sixteen, of age with Wen Qing; what could he really do?
Moreover, sending Wen Qing and not Wen Xu, even though Wen Xu was the same age as Nie Huaisang and Lan Wangji, indicated that Wen Ruohan didn’t want his more promising son to get involved in whatever it was that he was planning, or maybe in whatever consequences followed. If Wen Chao really were to try something violent, they couldn’t afford to have a weakness already there…
“I need to get A-Qing out of the Wen sect,” Wen Ning said, and Nie Mingjue turned to look at him in shock. “Permanently. I’ve begged her to go, but she won’t leave me, she won’t leave our family of the Dafan Wen, but she has to. Something bad is going to happen soon. I know it. I don’t mind trading my life for hers, but she has to live.”
“Is there any way you can go to the Cloud Recesses as well?” Nie Mingjue asked, his mind already racing. He’d long ago given up on helping Wen Ning because he knew the other man wouldn’t turn traitor against his family, being an upright and filial child, but if his family had reached such a depth of corruption as that, then it was only right to leave them behind. If Wen Ning was finally accepting that, maybe there was something he could do. “You’re sensitive to the – whatever it is. Right? Maybe Wen Qing can suggest bringing you around to help her find her way to it.”
“How would that help?”
“It gets you somewhere safe, while I can rescue Dafan Wen – without a threat to you or to them, your sister would have no reason to insist on staying,” Nie Mingjue said, though it wouldn’t be him, exactly, that did the rescue – he’d need a firm alibi lest Wen Ruohan use it as an excuse to start something with his Nie sect. He might have prepared for war as much as he could, but the Wen sect was still stronger; if war broke out, he needed to make sure that he had the moral high ground.
Luckily, Wei Wuxian, that walking calamity of a head disciple of Yunmeng Jiang, had of late developed the habit of wandering over to visit various other sects, including Qinghe (and Nie Mingjue in specific), at his leisure, and no one ever would think to blame him for such a strange thing as a subsidiary sect of distant Wen sect cousins disappearing.
After all, Wei Wuxian had no reason to know or care about the Dafan Wen, and everyone knew he abjured politics completely, violently and repetitively, so as to make no mistake about anyone who might otherwise see him as competition for the Jiang sect’s true heir, Jiang Cheng. The five-year gap between their ages kept them from being compared – you couldn’t expect a child, and at fifteen Jiang Cheng was still very much a child, to keep up with an adult just turned twenty like Wei Wuxian – but there had always been whispers given everything with Cangse Sanren, and Wei Wuxian had had to work very hard to put a stop to them.
Wei Wuxian’s wandering habit had started back when he’d been trying to find Jiang Yanli a new fiancée to replace the engagement he’d broken by fighting with Jin Zixuan, however shameful it was for him to fight with a boy two years his junior. It was for that that he had come to Qinghe to meet Nie Mingjue, leading to them hitting it off as friends despite Nie Mingjue expressing that he had absolutely no interest in getting married to Jiang Yanli, or indeed to any nice young lady at all; then, in turn, Nie Mingjue had brought him to the Lan sect to meet Lan Xichen. They’d gotten along as well, although the most notable outcome of that visit had been little Lan Wangji developing a crush on his elder brother’s new friend while Wei Wuxian remained blissfully oblivious. His wanderings had continued even after Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan had found their way back to each other, affianced once again through their own choice rather than their parents’.
Said parents had not yet been informed of this new situation, as they were waiting for the right time to mention it. Or perhaps more accurately, the right situation to exploit with it…
Now, Nie Mingjue thought. Now was the time. It would work perfectly.
And not just as a distraction.
“Are you sure…?”
“I am,” Nie Mingjue said. “Whatever it is, Wen Ruohan must be kept from obtaining all of the pieces; he’s already too powerful, and more power will only make him more arrogant. I’ll speak with Lan Qiren. Once I take the Dafan Wen back to the Nie sect, your sister will be able to testify to whatever it is that she was asked to search for, which will give Lan Qiren the evidence he needs to get his sect’s approval for retaliatory measures. Moreover, using Wei Wuxian to help me will force Jiang Fengmian to support me as well; there’s no way he’d ever refuse to back him to the hilt.”
“The Jin sect –”
“Will join us,” Nie Mingjue said, thinking of Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan’s yet-to-be-announced engagement. Once Jin Guangshan realized that he would be pulled into the same boat as the rest of them whether he wanted to or not, any resistance he had would crumble like a structure made of sand being beaten down by the tide. “They won’t have a choice. Is there anything else I should know?”
“There’s a child,” Wen Ning said, biting his lips. “Around the same age as your brother or my sister, or maybe the Jiang sect heir, I don’t know, around that. He helps Sect Leader Wen with whatever he’s doing.”
“A child helps him?”
Nie Mingjue didn’t like the sound of that.
“I don’t know. Some secret his family knows, I think…his surname is Xue.”
Nie Mingjue frowned.
“I don’t know much about him,” Wen Ning added. “Only that he has some history with the Yueyang Chang clan. Bad history.”
“That’s a good start,” Nie Mingjue said. He realized that he hadn’t yet released Wen Ning’s shoulders, and gave them a small squeeze before doing so. “Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I will do everything I can to help you.”
Wen Ning looked at him with admiration in his eyes, making Nie Mingjue feel a little hot under the collar.
“Thank you, Chifeng-zun,” he murmured, and Nie Mingjue shook his head.
“Call me by name,” he said, and tried to smile. “You’ll be here a lot in the future, if all goes well.”
Nie Mingjue hated the Wen sect, but he didn’t hate gentle and sad Wen Ning.
He didn’t hate him at all.

My hot take: CQL was actually written by JYL. This is why there’s so much of a focus on Yunmeng siblings (because she just wants her family to be together), why JC is softened (because of course her little brother is a wonderful person), and why she appears in scenes and places that she was never in in the novel (why was she at Cloud Recesses and the Yiling supervisory office. What was she doing there? What purpose did she serve?) This is also why JZX is weird around her at Cloud Recesses (CQL’s JZX comes off as someone who likes JYL but is bad with words, appearing to be distracted by looking at her, catching her after falling, and offering to go on a walk with her), because she would prefer to think that he was actually always in love with her rather than there legitimately being a time when he really didn’t want to marry her
YES! wtf was she doing in Cloud Recesses or the supervisory office other than MAKING SOUP. This girl spends all her time in the kitchen and all she makes is food tea... hell maybe it works bc the only way XuanLi makes sense is if she made some magic ass soup that addled his one brain cell. -& let's not forget the mirage of her that WWX has as he's running; or the way she's projected in the river; or the way he calls out her dumb name instead of LWJ's when jc is torturing him with Fairy. You're right. I wouldn't be surprised if Yang Xia did project on her. Why else would she go above and beyond the call of censorships to make cql the story of the Yunmeng sibs -it's about fAmiLY!" and the heterosexual romance between WWX and WQ until the fans thankfully caught on. AND THEN SHE WAS SALTY THEY MADE HER CHANGE IT. At this point I'm convinced that anything that went right in the show did so in spite of her best efforts to screw it up.

jzx/all three yunmeng sibs (jzx aka shared boyfriend) ?
jsdklfjsdlfdf
DON'T SHIP IT
Why don’t you ship it? I just... I can't. Can you imagine. Aside from getting a little too incest-adjacent for my personal tastes, they would just... argue. Constantly. Endlessly. Every single evening would end with Jin Zixuan sitting awkwardly in the corner while the Yunmeng sibs fight about him as if he's not there.
What would have made you like it? Maybe if the Yunmeng sibs weren't siblings, I'd find more sexy potential in the incredibly argumentative polycule, but as stated, I struggle to ship them.
Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it? It is an extremely funny idea, I am very delighted.

I know you did ZYX in other sects, but what about being directly born into the main family? How do you rate that unpleasantness? Obviously being WRH's kid is dead last because you're both on Team Evil and the losing side, but which is LEAST bad?
(like always, gonna be a stream of consciousness thing so i'll probably contradict myself multiple times)
I'm not really into writing ppl directly into the main family bc it's too easy to destroy the dynamics that made those relationships interesting (note that interesting does not mean healthy). zyx will be too close to do things without close scrutiny, and even if she's close it might not help at all in the grand scheme of things.
-
least bad will be the lans. it's basically lan wenhui, except she lives in the same house instead of a few buildings down. lqr's blood pressure is a bit higher, but he'll live. the age order is lxc, and then lwj+lwh as twins (bc i cannot see mme lan wanting another kid in a shorter interim, and it's just... lwh as baby if she's born way after lwj)
lwh looks a lot like the twin jades compared to as a cousin. when they were younger, lwh would 'persuade' lwj to let her do twinswap shenanigans, esp when he wanted to hide away or see their mom. lwj is definitely less socially stunted, but recalcitrant by choice.
lxc has to do a lot more wrangling in this situation. lwj might act out due to stubbornness, and he now is better at arguing his case w lwh egging him on. lwh, now as a direct line lan, is an unstoppable proto-jingyi. you can never be sure what lesson she takes from punishment, what she actually thinks of the rules.
(lwj is more equipped to handle someone like wwx, even if the gay crush still blindsides him. wwx is like 'oh? a worthy adversary!' and keeps trying to one-up lwj)
-
second bad... is the nie. just imagine the original answer i gave is middle child nie yunxun. nmj isn't harsh on her since she's a daughter and not expected to be the spare heir, and she's still in a position of power such that she can operate as she pleases in the sect.
know lxc pretty well since she had to tag along w nmj whenever he visited the cloud recesses or lxc visited the unclean realm. back at it again with the daai-gaaze babysitting life - she was assigned to watch over nhs and lwj whenever their da-ge's were hanging out.
-
starting to get bad: yunmeng jiang. with the mme yu and jfm situation, i don't think they'll want to have another kid after jc as long as jc is the first son in their family. thus this incarnation of zyx needs to be older than jc. let's switch up. jiang rongkun (榮坤 - luxuriant/glorious; Earth/female), the oldest of the jiang sibs. mme yu wishes she was born male to be sect heir, or soft enough for mme jin to want to tie jzx to her (mme jin took one look at her sworn sister's daughter and knew that girl would eat her son alive). jfm wishes she was born sweeter (not like his vicious-tongued, sharp-eyed wife), his daughter perpetually seems unimpressed with him and everything.
jyl is as she is in canon, except less passive because can she learn any different with a mom like that, and now an older sister like that?jrk doesn't give up on jyl, long after mme yu dismisses her softness as weakness and lack of will to cultivate, and jfm lost interest as she can't take over the sect.
jc could have a bajillion complexes (last choice for his parents, only in his position because they needed an heir, pressures near insurmountable since he now has jrk as a measuring stick since birth instead of wwx since 9)
but jrk thinks she can be a better sibling this life. between her and jyl they are like a second set of parents for jc (and wwx), and the emotional burden isn't entirely on jyl. and as the eldest sister, jrk is not afraid to say "no, that's stupid. go think about it and come try again" "use your words, you cretin, not your fist" "if you don't like it, just be honest. at least, around your family"
no one believes the og yunmeng trio that their eldest sister is like this. her outside persona is a bit curt and direct, but no one can say she lacks the decorum of a well-bred young lady from the gentry sects.
-
penultimate bad - jin sect. i get the feeling that jgs didn't care much for mme jin, even in terms of sexual attraction (and probably mutual on mme jin's part). they fucked enough to get jzx, a legitimate heir, and then jgs started his tart train.
the only way for zyx to be in the direct family is also to be the unnecessary first-born daughter (and i'll recycle the name from before, jin zi'ai 金子藹 (zi as the generational character, ai for affable/luxuriant)). bc jgs is a pos and i think lanling jin would be a cesspool of propriety and hierarchy hiding absolute bullshit, jza basically has no power (compared to being mme yu's eldest daughter).
stuck acting as a free nanny to her younger brother. even if jza wants to humanize jzx, if the little brat cries a little to mommy and daddy she'll get punished (didn't fucking miss that shit from her first life). bad cousin jzxun is even worse. it takes creativity to get these two brats to listen to and respect her. she gets there. she's not proud of the person she has to be in lanling jin.
as (good) jzx grows up he gets less bratty. and with his older sister guiding him, he's less out-of-touch and socially stunted. but uh. as a result, he has strong opinions on women who aren't like jza (you think wwx and jc had jiejie-complexes? meet the new and improved jzx(s)). instead of jzx passively eating the knuckle sandwiches being fed to him, he fights back.
("why would i want some passive ghost of a woman for a wife? no strength, weak-willed -"
"shijie's much better than that cold viper you call a sister!")
she can't be super-involved in the sunshot campaign (she decides that jzx(s) need the reputation more than she does, so she tries to hold the fort at home and keep her younger brother aware of political developments). jgy eventually ends up in lanling, can't stop that.
idk if jza will drive jgy to commit murder faster, or will she be able to assimilate him into her camp of 'protect jin zixuan'. bc jgy is never becoming sect leader if she can help it (too much needs to happen and their implications BAD if jgy is to be accepted as lanling jin sect leader).
maybe she'll convince him to give up on their father after starting a quest to collect the jin bastards. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
worst, wens: with wrh having two sons, it implies that he either wanted an heir and a spare, or he's getting mad concubine ass and we can have a little wen!zyx and all the wen kids are half-siblings, and we can recycle the 'wen ling' (溫玲, ling for exquisite) name. wen ruohan would prob have a lot of fun pitting his children against each other for his affection/acknowledgment, so there's no short of availability of resources to grow and cultivate for his kids.
wl will have to grow up between wx and wc. we don't know much about wx, and he doesn't seem like the caring brotherly type. probably bullies his younger siblings, except wl is an adult on the inside and 1) doesn't give a shit as long as you don't draw blood 2) if you draw blood she has over twenty years of experience in getting even.
she'll try to establish contact with the wen branch healers, feeling out dissenting wens, all that jazz. she has to play a very fine line - survive long enough for the sunshot campaign to be well underway, and be the one that kills her father to 'usurp' qishan wen before the sunshot coalition can take down nightless city.
something something nasty cold war w this new qishan wen and the rest of the cultivation realm. it's harder to fend off jgs's ambitions at this point due to the wen's standing and now a female sect leader.

Summary:  “Wei Wuxian is the son of two rogue cultivators who recently died on a night-hunt,” his mother explained. “We are taking him in as a favor to a friend.”
At least it wasn’t another surprise half-sibling.
It did not take long for Jin Zixuan to reconsider. Wei Wuxian was a gremlin, brought to Koi Tower for the sole purpose of driving Jin Zixuan into insanity.
Author’s note sets the tone:
WWX growing up in the Jin Sect, watching JZX fail miserably at every social interaction: wow, someone should do something about that
MianMian: yeah, you
WWX: oh, right
... Chaos gremlin WWX is so fun to write
My comments:  It is late, and I cannot do this justice in the bookmark, but it's hilarious and I adored it. Wwx is indeed a chaos gremlin, he and Mian Mian and Jin Zixuan (with Madam Jin's full encouragement and cooperation) are set to completley take over Jin sect and fix the world. (And jzx, bless.) And wwx when he meets lwj is an utter, shameless, oblivious delight that his Jin sibs get a lot of mileage from.
favorite. because it made me so happy.
non yunmeng wei wuxian, jin sect wei wuxian, chaos gremlin wei wuxian, fluff and crack, humor, found family, chaotic jin trio, wei wuxian & jin zixuan & mianmian, friendship, heterosexual disaster jin zixuan, possessive jin zixuan, jealous jin zixuan, jin zixuan POV, banter, genius wei wuxian, bamf wei wuxian, bamf mianmian, fix it, wei wuxian POV, shameless wei wuxian, oblivious wei wuxian, utterly whipped lan wangji, feel good fic, favorite, @i-like-plan-m

My attempt at making the novel an idol AU pt.1
This is my body’s last hurrah before shutting down but since I wrote so much I thought I might as well let other people see. English is not my first language and it shows. Also, this is very messy, but having justified myself enough I present to you the obligatory idol AU.
Part 2 here.
The Yunmeng sibs debut as a trio.
JC is the leader so lots of pressure for him.
Maybe something like 8eight or Urban Zakapa? although not that genre of music probably. But also not that far either??
Their lightstick makes a cute bell sound and is known as such.
Their Lotus Pier album was very well received (it doesn’t have to be their debut album tho).
On their concerts in LP era their fans customized their lightsticks to look like lotus flowers so they could see a lotus lake while performing.
JYL and JWY are well known to be siblings, they met WWX at the company and the three of them are very close.
There was a time people started to spread rumors about JYL and WWX dating that made Jin Zixuan drink vinegar and because it´s JZX he decided to be an asshole about it (Yunmeng sibs won a prize and when JYL was giving her speech he looked so annoyed that even fans made memes about it, and other petty stuff. WWX takes revenge by “accidentally” hitting him with his MC flashcards).
Moving on, they started to put out solo stuff with JC (Sandu) and WWX.
JFM was like “what do you want to do for your debut” and he was like “not sure”. They went through a lot of genres, demos and titles and settled for Suibian, a song that seems simple with “simple” lyrics but that has more than meets the eye, very catchy.
From then on WWX stars exploring new genres -this in-house producer with a very particular way of doing things left an impression-. (You know how in that novel extra there’s this old dude that uses a fierce corpse to help him with his boat or something? That probably helped him solidify the idea that resentful energy could be used)
They were known as the two/twin prides of Yunmeng (the company).
Now, WWX becomes friends with Wen Ning -a trainee at the moment, to debut with the group Archer- and of course this is when the Wen Scandals start (everyone knows how that might go).
WY gets dragged for his relationship with WN and for something he allegedly said and or did regarding WC or WLJ (in the case of the later it was defenately something sexual related to her or Mianmian). dragging the Yunmeng sibs and subsequently, Yunmeng with him.
(In this universe the Jin sect can be Dispatch).
Obviously JC ends up being the company's savior with the hit Zidian (a remake of the Purple Spider´s 80´s song composed by WWX and produced by WQ but shhh it was just a rough demo that JWY was given by this mysterious ghost producer or something) gaining his Sandu Shengshou persona.
JYL probably gets the shortest end of the stick sadly, BUT she opens a restaurant that does pretty well.
WWX terminates his contract and goes and starts his own company with the Wen sibs, or joins another company with them, BM entertainment.
A-Yuan is their only trainee and WWX´s protegee.
There was talk about a debut project known as Radish -WWX wanted it to be Potato but WQ didn't agree, he let it slide because that was not the final name either way (thank god)- to debut with Grass Butterfly but oh well.
Fourth uncle as the choreographer? He made the choreo for Fruit Wine.
Popo as their vocal teacher???
Either way they start the Yiling project, with Wen Qing, Wen Ning, WWX and a groundbreaking-kinda-controversial concept because how dare they have a female in their group and do that (and other fun stuff).
Very edgy obviously.
Chenqing tops the charts but the company remains very small.
They get in lots of scandals be it WY dating WQ (lol poor Wangji), lyrics, concepts, concept pictures, hairstyles, getting banned from performing in certain shows and a big etc.
Their fanbase is very loyal and powerful, kinda like the ARMY but they are known as the undead army because they never tire from streaming or smth. The fandom was so wild the media used to say that only WWX could control them.
Dunno about the fandom name but their lightstick is definitely the Yin Tiger Tally (because you know how it shines in the donghua and all that). And since it’s supposed to be two parts (one for the general and for the ruler if I recall correctly) they used to say that they had one part and the fans the other so when they came together stuff went down.
WN has them killer moves -now with the Ghost General image behind him which their fans find amusing-, Wen Qing the sharp vocals (she´s really good at tutting and waacking too), and WWX being the all rounder he is starts getting called the Yiling Laozu by the media (he doesn't like the title xd).
They self compose and self-everyting a lot  (getting a comeback out is expensive). WWX used to call his studio The Cave, and would jokingly call it the demon slaughtering cave (or some play on words like that).
One year at Nightless City (the equivalent of MAMA that gets that name because they´re gonna light up the stage all night long or whatever) only God knows how they don't get notified that lightsticks are not allowed in the venue so when they perform there's a sea of red, only for them. The media takes this as a very arrogant act and shortly after hell breaks loose.
WN and WY get into this massive scandal with JZX because of a fancam where they seem to be grimmancing and laughing at his performance.
The three of them put out statements and WQ´s catches fire.
WN and WQ leave the company and WWX is very mad and frustrated and ends up getting drunk while driving which causes an accident in which he crashes into JYL´s restaurant.
Nobody is thrilled by this turn of events and even his own fan base turns against him.
He disappears from the public eye (do you get charges for something like this?) and lays low for a while (since JYL doesn't die in this he apologizes profusely, JC still resents him tho) and at some point it becomes old news although people were on edge at first because his contract was never terminated.
Although very controversial, his work left a big print in the entertainment world and no one talks about it but his influence is everywhere (kinda maybe like dyed hair and Bigbang?). There´s this dude called Xue Chengmei that starts putting out very similar stuff and conversation about WWX resurfaces for a bit but XY has a scandal too and that's a story for another day.
Then one day BM entertainment announces the debut of Mo Xuanyu (which NHS, a TV producer, had no qualms in promoting) with WWX as his producer.
His debut does quite well and everything's nice and sweet.
Then he gets invited to be a guest mentor in Dafan (their version of produce 101 and The Unit) for one episode and he's not sure but he agrees and meets the juniors (he didn't know where A-Yuan ended up and is pleasantly surprised to find out he debuted as Lan SIzhui and is doing well) and LWJ as a fellow mentor.
Stuff arises.
In the teaser for the episode he appeared on, nearing the end, a silhouette and a pair of clapping hands are shown and when the camera fades to black he says the whole “Awake yet/still sleeping” stuff and his dormant fans went nuts.
Fun fact: Madame Yu and Madame Jin trained together at some point that's why they are close.
Mo Xuanyu had trained in the same company as JZX (Lanling) but was told that they didn't need him for the concept they were going for (bullshit). He went back to his family´s dance studio with newly aquarided self image issues where Mo the-cousin-dude stole his choreos and posted them on their youtube channel as his own. NHS finds him some way and directs him to BM where he debuts with the album Summoning Ritual, which consists of the title track Lunatic and four other songs plus the outro Little Apple. His lightstick is an apple born from a story similar to N.Flying´s. That song gave WWX a lot of trouble and he used to refer to it as a stubborn donkey.
He went to their version of masked singer and his mask was obviously this ugly woman with makeup that everyone thought was a hanged ghost.

On to the Wen Indoctrination Camp Arc of CQL! Covering episodes 11-14:
Gosh the Lotus Pier sect is so bright and airy. The Untamed may not have had that much budget, but they do a good job of giving each sect a character (sometimes not so subtly with “literal volcano and evil dark throne room” for the Wens). In the, like, one scene we get of the people who live around Lotus Pier, we’re really given a sense of character of the city (town? whatever type of habitation surrounds the sect). I wish we’d been able to get more of it.
Wei Wuxian on the Care and Tending of your Shidi: “If your shidi is mad, just give him some scritches and shoulder bumps and maybe that will calm him down”
Love that as soon as Jiang Yanli appears to greet the Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng in episode 11, the boys immediately forget that they’re supposed to be repentant and apologizing to their sect leader/Dad and just start asking for attention from her
I admire the fandom’s effort to make Madame Yu and effective political player in fanon, because canon...does not have that for her. She blows in, complains about the terrible situation that everyone is already aware of and already knows is really hostage-taking, offers no solutions, and twists it as a personal attack on Jiang Cheng vs. Wei Wuxian just because the Wen Clan only asked for a sect heir and not ”a sect heir and also a quasi-adopted kid who treats the clan leader like an uncle, if you’ve got one of those.” Like, there’s the intersection of the personal and political, and then there’s this clownery
When Wen Chao first appears at the Wen Indoctrination Camp, Jin Zixuan does this magnificent eye roll
Tumblr media
In the Indoctrination Camp, the main players are Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, and Jin Zixuan (with kind of sort of Jiang Cheng):
Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, and Jin Zixuan are the ones singled out to recite to rules -- the ones who were trouble-makers in past, and the one who’s a trouble-maker now.
When Wei Wuxian recites the Gusu Lan rules, the camera keeps cutting to Jin Zixuan trying to hold in his laughter while Jiang Cheng scowls and shakes his head.
During the Xuanwu fight, Jin Zixian and Wei Wuxian show off good leadership skills and take charge of situation in turns (with Lan Wangji occasionally ducking in).
There’s even Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixuan both taking turns talking back to Wen Chao throughout the arc
...and it all goes to show how Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixian had the potential to become a real good bro-in-law combo, if it weren’t for the whole Soup Incident, Burial Mounds Escape, and Accidental Murder :/
What’s interesting is also how Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan are paired together during this arc - with the same refusal to recite the Wen Sect rules, the same punishment in manure fields, and the same way they protect Mianmian.
...which means Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan also had strong potential as Yunmeng sibs bros-in-laws -- they could compare notes on how to keep white clothing pristine and the best way to stand up against obnoxious bullies! (and how to do better when they’re your family, in JZX’s case. You were so good against WC, my dude! But when it came to your dad you just let everything slide. But that probably also ties to back into the culture and filial piety and such).
To add to poor Jiang Cheng in the JC/WQ romance, I feel like you could do a modified Bechdel test with them: do the two characters of Jiang Cheng and Wen Qing have a conversation that features something other than Wei Wuxian?
This could also work for Wen Ning, because while Jiang Cheng would never mention him, Wen Qing will absolutely bring him up
These episodes really nail home how much the attack on Lotus Pier was inevitable -- not just to the viewer, like when Wen Chao has lines like “it doesn’t matter what we do to the sect heirs, my dad’s going to kill all the sects anyway!”, but to the characters themselves. Episode 12 makes it very clear in Wen Chao’s summary of all the sects so far: the Lans taken over and burnt, the Nies and NMJ in particular on the run, the Jins currently safe because JGS is probably sucking up to the Wens. And the Jiangs, only safe because JFM has yet to make a move -- and WC makes a clear that he’s hoping to attack the first chance he gets. The only choices were only ever going to be submit or die
It goes to show that the problems of cultivation world are just the same before and after the Wen’s attack. They are too careful, too slow to really challenge the ones in power, while those in power slowly pick off those who can oppose them. And much like after the war, the one of the big problem lays with the Jins and their grasp for power.
In Episode 13, I love the Wei Wuxian just nabs Lan Wangji’s arms to support him, like: “nope I’m not taking any more protesting from you! You’re getting helped!” Much like how Lan Wangji will straight-up piggyback Wei Wuxian later, despite his protests
Tumblr media
It’s funny that Wei Wuxian ends up leading the troupe straight to the Xuanwu of Slaughter twice. Like, the first time Wei Wuxian leads the troupe to the Xuanwu cave, it’s in a very mad scientist “wanted to know if it could be done but didn’t stop to ask if it should be done” way (I mean, you could make the argument that WC might have started hurting people if they couldn’t find the cave, but no threats were made). But then that second time is just pure accident, stepped on the wrong “rock,“ and whoopsiedoodle now you all have monster to deal with!
So even though I do wish we’d seen Wei Wuxian’s fight with his sword more, I also still love his creative solutions to problems during the Xuanwu cave fight. Especially when combined with these two posts (1 and 2) on his fighting style, and his effective downing of Jin Ling and the other Jins in Episode 2...Wei Wuxian doesn’t just find the quickest way to end a fight. He finds the quickest way to end the war. Sure, they could keep fighting the Wen soldiers until they were exhausted and maybe overcame Wen and Wen Zhuliu...or Wei Wuxian could put the Wens out of commission, make them surrender, and end the fighting with a solid win for his side (with also bit of showing off as he shoves Wen Chao’s hypocrisy in his face - I’m not sure if that’s part of the plan to make Wen Chao act recklessly, part of how Wei Wuxian likes to let people know that they’re in the wrong, or a bit of both). It’s very effective in the Sunshot campaign and Guanyin temple too -- why fight the grunts when you can take out the head and call it a day?
Outside of the terrible 32-33 Nightless City arc, I think this one of Lan Wangji’s most emotional vulnerable and emotionally open arcs? And also one of the few times he openly expresses pain? I’d have to finish the rewatch to be sure, but he’s definitely in pain and vulnerable when he gets his knee broken, and then after the Xuanwu attack he’s a lot less controlled with his expressions. This arc is the equivalent for him of the Yunmeng sibs losing Lotus Pier, and he doesn’t even have his sibling around. Not only is he a lot of pain, his sect and family are in danger, and he can’t do anything to help.
Wait, so in that first night in the Xuanwu cave, Wei Wuxian seems to fall asleep around the same time as Lan Wangji but is awake a long time before him, since he’s has time to check out the hole and untie Lan Wangji’s ribbon? Just how little sleep did you get, Wei Wuxian???
Honestly, the harshest Jiang Fengmian acts towards Jiang Cheng is the Episode 14 scene. And it’s right after Jiang Cheng says that other people possibly dying (in this case, also politically important people) are “trivial matters” that Wei Wuxian shouldn’t have been involved in. And when Wei Wuxian tries to help by saying “no he doesn’t actually mean that, he just says awful shit when he’s mad!” Jiang Fengmian is like ‘...well that’s not good either and you shouldn’t do that.”  In their other scenes, Jiang Fengmian and Jiang Cheng don’t have this uncomfortable relationship -- Jiang Cheng doesn’t act like he thinks his father dislikes him, and Jiang Fengmian isn’t scolding Jiang Cheng or acting like he did something wrong. Jiang Fengmian is like that “I don’t know how to tell you that you should care about other people“ meme -- except no, really, he doesn’t know how to tell Jiang Cheng how to better care about other people. His siblings instinctively understood that concept, why can’t he? Will re-telling the sect motto help???
(It will not, in fact, help)
I don’t know what about resentful energy gives one telekinesis, I don’t how that’s different than regular spiritual magic, and I don’t know why it never comes up again, but I have say:

Salutations! My most pertinent question for you concerns your thoughts on Jin Zixuan, if you have any. You've commented on him but I don't think you've seriously discussed him. Personally I think he's a good man who hasn't had the opportunity to nurture his best traits, which may be what Yanli-jiejie sees in him. Like the scene with the soup; I always thought that JZX was mad that Yanli-jiejie was trying to take credit for someone else's work, rather than him just being an ass.
man oh man... my thoughts on Jin Zixuan used to consist solely of “well, I guess he’s there, and then he dies” until I wrote this post about the scene in episode 25 in which Jiang Yanli roasts Jin Zixun within an inch of his life and then suddenly, bam!, Jin Zixuan thoughts.
Most of those thoughts can be summarized with the TVTropes page “Lonely Rich Kid,” because that’s what Jin Zixuan appears to be -- unlike the other scions of the major five/four cultivation sects we see, Jin Zixuan alone doesn’t have a sibling that he’s close to (we have the Twin Jades, the Yunmeng Trio, the Wen Sibs, the Nie bros, but... Jin Zixuan’s just got Jin Zixun, who I have to believe that he merely tolerates because there’s no one else around). I would love a close platonic friendship between Jin Zixuan and Mianmian/Luo Qingyang, but something (ahEM Madam Jin) makes me think that would be frowned upon by his parents.
The point is -- we have a young Jin Zixuan, growing up pampered and isolated, attended by servants more often than family members, unable to form close or meaningful friendships because everyone around him is too low in status and it’s always been the Jin way to emphasize and reinforce class differences (in contrast to, say, Yunmeng Jiang, whose sect leader literally brings the son of a servant into his central household). Jin Zixuan is born with the easy arrogance of knowing his self-worth (high) and never doubting it; he’s probably never wanted for anything (material) in his life.
And before he goes to Gusu summer camp, he probably doesn’t realize how empty his life is, all gilded edges and the overabundance of cold, unyielding metal. But during his time in Gusu...does he ever look at One Braincell Trio, cavorting through Cloud Recesses, living a little wildly but oh so joyously, and wonder what that it would be like to join them? Does he ever look at Nie Huaisang teasing Wei Wuxian, or at Wei Wuxian’s casual arm slung over Jiang Cheng’s shoulder, and blink at the presumptive casualness of the gesture, the revolutionary realization that touch could be unthinking, freely, and fondly given, rather than doled out sparingly by a father more often absent than present?
Does he look at Wei Wuxian go on the fucking warpath for his sister over a slight, and wonder what it’s like, both to have someone who would do that for him, and someone he would do that for?
For what it’s worth, I don’t think Jin Zixuan loved Jiang Yanli from the beginning; when we first meet him in episode 3, he’s decidedly frosty -- for the duration of the entire confrontation about rooms in the inn, he refuses to meet her eyes, to budge even an inch to display the slightest courtesy to his betrothed. His honor, his vast display of pomp and wealth is more important to Jin Zixuan than the comfort of the woman he is supposed to marry.
Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli’s betrothal is, if I’m not mistaken, the only one of its kind in the show -- an agreement between their mothers before they were even born, the choice to memorialize the friendship between Madam Yu and Madam Jin with the lives of their son and daughter. It’s a magnificent gesture -- and one that does not take the feelings of their children into account.
Part of me wonders if Jiang Yanli fell head-over-heels for Jin Zixuan as a defense mechanism -- she sees, first-hand, what an unhappy marriage can do to a woman, to a family, to the children of a household, and resolves never to let that happen to her. Instead, she’ll love her husband so deeply, devotedly, completely, courteously, that there will never be an opportunity for resentment to arise.
Jin Zixuan, on the other hand, grows up with the knowledge that he is to marry a woman regardless of his feelings for her, knowing that the substance of his future has been claimed by the previous generation to memorialize a friendship he hardly cares about. Why is it that his marriage has to prove the strength of his mother’s friendship? And so he wants to resent Jiang Yanli, for what she represents -- a reminder of yet another thing in his life that he has no choice in.
But Jiang Yanli thaws his heart, as she does with almost everyone she meets, and under her influence, we see Jin Zixuan becoming...better. More human, more tolerant, more forgiving. We truly don’t get a lot of Jin Zixuan in this show, and he’s the first of their cohort to die, which rudely interrupts any character arc he might have been progressing through. But he calls Jin Guangyao A-Yao with genuine intent, claiming him as family, arguing for his trustworthiness with his father. Jin Zixuan speaks out for Wei Wuxian, siding with Lan Wangji in inviting Wei Wuxian to Jin Ling’s one month/three-month party, and it’s his voice that sways Jin Guangshan into approving the invitation. He chokes out his last words, and instead of cursing Wei Wuxian with his last breath, uses that precious moment to tell Wei Wuxian how much Jiang Yanli still loves him.
All of which is to say -- perhaps there’s more to this peacock than we give him credit for.
