I’m a little more than halfway through OOO now, and I wanted to do a little write up of some of my thoughts that I haven’t already put in other posts, so here it is!

I am completely and utterly amazed at how good this show actually is. When I rewatch an old show, especially a show that I have a lot of nostalgia for, I usually try to keep my expectations low (and that goes double for a show where I’m not the target audience). However, OOO, somehow manages to almost be better than I remember it. A big part of that is I’m watching it now knowing how the show ends, and I can clearly see how much foreshadowing there was. Stuff like Eiji and the purple Medals or Date knowing who Eiji is are brought up pretty early and continue to get hinted at throughout the show. One really big example is Ankh mentioning in EPISODE 2, that he can taste things now. It seems like a completely innocent, throwaway line, but when you know what’s revealed later about the Greeed it just hits you right in the heart ;__;

I was a bit surprised at how much I had forgotten about the show, but that made rediscovering those things kind of fun. One major thing is Eiji having that I’m-pretending-to-be-stupid-but-I’m-actually-two-steps-ahead-of-everyone aspect of his personality. It’s a trait that makes him into a really entertaining main character.

Speaking of characters, the big stand out for me this time around is Gotou. I didn’t notice him as much the first time because he’s a lot less flamboyant compared to the rest of the cast, but now I really love his character. It’s cool how he starts off bitter and entitled, but then when he has the opportunity to get what he wants (being Birth) he turns it down because he has to stick to his morals. Then he goes through a dark, hopeless period before working his way up to finally becoming Birth. It’s just such a great little character arc, I can’t wait to see it all.

Also (and I probably forgot this because OOO was my first Kamen Rider show and I didn’t know any different) it is very amusing to see some of the characters fight Greeed/Yummies with real life weapons. Like, Gotou whipping out a rocket launcher or Satonaka dual wielding handguns when she shows up to bring the final core medal for TaJaDor’s debut.

We cannot talk about OOO without talking about the one and only notorious birdman himself. I remember when I first watched OOO I felt like Ankh was the kind of character I would have created when I was in middle school. Having rewatched a good chunk of the show now, I can say that I agree with past-me 100 percent. Ankh is, like, the perfect blorbo. If you opened the dictionary and looked up “blorbo” there would be a picture of Ankh, and he would be looking very pretty in it. He’s like if a group of top blorbo scientist gathered together and decided to build the perfect blorbo with the most blorbo-y of blorbo traits. All with the main goal to blorbo-ify the entire world.

With that being said, Ankh is also absolutely terrible. And I love it. I remember him being pretty selfish, and I was preparing for the fact that I probably had a nicer, fanon-ified version of him in my head, but, woooow I was not quite ready. Still, it makes the show just that more enjoyable. He stirs up a lot of drama and it’s great.

For a quick aside, it’s also been neat to go down the Internet rabbit hole and see how many other roles Miura Ryosuke has had in the last few years. It looks like he found his niche in musical theater, and has been involved in a lot of anime-to-stage adaptations (did you know there’s a Fist of the North Star musical? I sure didn’t!). The Black Butler fandom seems to have embraced him, and I hope the JJK fandom enjoys him as their stage Gojo.

Finally, I don’t have too much to say about him, but I absolutely love Date. I couldn’t wait to get to his episodes, and all of his focus episodes (the Kendo girl eps, the LOVE-LOVE-LOVE combo eps) have been my favorites so far. He’s so much fun.

Overall, I’m so glad that I decided to rewatch the show. I was kind of hesitant because it’s hard for me to watch TV shows these days ( and I’m still rewatching Zexal), but it’s been so wonderful to re-experience OOO again, especially after what a gut punch the 10th anniversary movie was. I can’t wait to watch the rest!

So,

As I said earlier this week, I'm on vacation and hope to get around to some of your asks soon. But in the time I posted that and now, things happened, the world has blown up and the life my 67 year old friend and helper had in Oahu, is upended. I'm currently helping with relief efforts for Maui, and if anyone is so inclined, please see this link for a list of local Hawaiian charities that can get real help to people who most need it right now. It's a list made by native Hawaiians with confirmed charities on the top tabs.

lol having read through the notes on that poll since apparently it's controversial i'm now hoping crisis wins on principle

way too many 'how dare anyone vote for anything other than welcome to korea it's the best episode ever' and like, come on lol, it's not that great. mike farrell doesn't emote, hawkeye fills the role of narrator in a way that feels a little awkward, it has a few notably racist moments, it's a series of random events tied together only by the theme 'it sucks here' which is valid but not exactly amazing structurally...

it's a perfectly fine soft pilot and tbh frank is amazing in it, but it's not one of the best episodes of the series, and it makes sense for a lot of people to actively dislike it and prefer any given previous episode to it since it writes out a great character somewhat awkwardly (if homoerotically as fuck thank you welcome to korea) and is the start of a new era that many see as a downgrade for good reasons

red & blue team - poolside edition

command decides that its about time our favourite red and blue teams take some long-awaited R&R, so they send them off to a random hotel somewhere sunny. not too expensive but not terrible either. as most hotels do, there is a pool and hot tub, and both teams were already dying to get in the water as soon as they showed up.

sarge would take this as another opportunity to train his team, making them do laps around the pool. when his team eventually retaliates and quits his rough regimen, he probably lays back in a seat and fumes silently like an old man. he'd bring a radio to listen, and sing rather loudly, to some music from his time, to everyone's dismay.

simmons can't really do much in a pool due to being part robot, so he sticks to sitting on the steps of the pool or dangling his feet in the deep end. maybe if he's feeling adventurous, he'll stand knee deep in the shallow end. he also wears a wetsuit as to prevent sunburn, though the pale side of his face is completely covered in sunscreen. grif makes fun of him for all of these things.

speaking of, grif isn't a big swimmer. he says its "too much work". he spends most of his time in the jacuzzi, eventually napping from how relaxed the water makes him. though if and when he is dragged into the pool, he just lays on his back and lets the water take him away. or he steals one of caboose's big pool floats and floats around on it. he also purposely splashes water at simmons to piss him off and to watch the sparks fly off his robot parts.

donut walks out with a lightish-red speedo on, as to be expected. he'd be a little weirded out swimming in a pool, probably having only swum in creeks, lakes, and streams since he's a country boy, but he'd end up playing around with caboose or chilling in the hot tub with grif. makes "moist and hot" jokes and other obvious inuendos OFTEN.

church would be the one guy at the pool who's fully clothed for some reason. he sits under an umbrella the entire time, fuming alongside sarge due to how often he gets splashed with water (either from caboose or tucker). the only way he gets in the water is from tucker pushing him in when he isn't looking. besides that, he acts kinda as an asshole lifeguard.

tucker goes to the pool not for the swimming, but for the aesthetic. he's the type to walk around shirtless to "impress the ladies". he'd go into the water only to walk back out, catching the sun just right so the water glistens off of him and his well-defined muscles... or at least, that's what happens in his head. but actually, he does like to swim, challenging others to races across and other fun pool games. he is the designated splasher as well, splashing basically anyone as soon as they are out of the pool and dry (especially church). he would also be the guy to call a chicken fight.

caboose brings a huge collection of pool toys and floaties with him. he spends all his time in the pool, saying the hot tub is "too hot" or "too small". he tends to stay near the shallow end, but does swim around the deep end as well. he is the guy to cannonball and jump into the pool, which makes a huge splash that gets on almost everyone near it. he also doesn't get why church won't swim with them, splashing him with water to show him that the water is perfectly fine.

doc is assigned lifeguard duty because of course he is. the funny thing though is he doesn't know how to swim, so all he does is just sit in a chair anxiously hoping nothing happens so he doesn't need to get into the deep end. thankfully, donut comes by and keeps him company, maybe even convincing him to hangout with him and caboose in the shallow end.

lopez, being a robot, would take this time to chill in their hotel room alone, enjoying the rare bit of silence. though, knowing sarge, he'd end up dragging lopez down with them and assign him to massage duty, making him give anyone out of the water a massage when they so please. he hates his life.

it's been a while since i've cried hard enough to have a headache but. sure got there today, babes!

Growing up on Tumblr, I was surprised how no one in person knew or cared that it was the Ides of March (death of Ceaser).

i have so many strategies and policies for writing work emails. and the thing is i used to think they were all super self-evident, until i started training people who did not do ANY of this and it all had to be explained. i was like, i don't know why clients love me, maybe because i'm adorable? but then i discovered i actually had to tell my coworkers to say "thank you" in emails and was like hmmm. maybe it's because i'm adorable AND i say thank you in emails. further research is needed.

it's like. everything happens so much. it's all happening right now but at the same time nothing is happening whatsoever. it's a liminal space of an existence. it's slowly crushing me under the weight but when I look up there's nothing actually bearing down on me. there shouldn't be any weight. something is wrong but nothing has happened. I'm simultaneously overwhelmed and utterly bored. nothing is happening and maybe that's the everything that's happening. maybe the everything is the nothing. we aren't there yet but it's all so imminent. either everything is going to crash down or nothing is. I'm just waiting to figure out which.

I am working on an AU featuring the Funtimes, little birdy is right! It's a very different flavour than Call of the Abyss, more of a fantastical drama than a science-fiction horror mystery. It is a tale of duty and responsibility, secrets and closets, choices and consequences, healing and growth, a farmer's child and a puzzling fae, and above all, it is a tale about two lonely souls whose fates are more closely intertwined than either realize.

It is also a tale full of fae shenanigans, fun and indulgence. It's not a serious epic like Call of the Abyss, and hopefully not as huge and ambitious either. 😂 So, dropping the serious act, it's a Fae AU in which some poor unsuspecting farmer gets caught up in the Funtimes' court's bullshit and learns to navigate a new social circle that seems hellbent on keeping their newest member close. I will make a new blog just for it, as there will be more, err, kid-unfriendly elements featuring in this one - I want to be able to properly curate my audience for this AU without alienating people who follow me here and like my non-explicit stories. So, until that's done, I'm leaving y'all with this little sneak peek. :)
