sofa. I'm trying to think of another question but im not sure. would you list some of your top 10 favorite cartoons of all time

DAMN ANOTHER TOUGHIE.. ive watched a lot of cartoons... i feel like its easy just to list more current ones/cartoons ive very recently watched but im gonna try real hard not to do that. so in no particular order:

adventure time: probably an obvious choice to ppl who know me personally. im pretty sure ive said this before but i quite literally grew up with this show, like i watched the pilot on nicktoons when i was like 9 and freaked out when the first episode of the actual show aired, and ive still regularly and enthusiastically kept up with it ever since, even to this day. i have to be honest and say the inclusions of distant lands and fionna and cake had me worried in a very cynical way about wringing the franchise dry or it succumbing to nostalgia bait but ive been happy to have had those fears handily dispelled every time. it makes me really happy to see that the cast and crew that have stuck with it just seem so genuinely excited to continue to tell new stories in the expanded universe and explore the land of ooo and new characters who live there, i think thats a good way to keep an ongoing series with spinoffs or limited series or what have you to keep from getting stale

ducktales 2017: once again anybody who knows me personally or follows this blog knows why this is on the list. i. fucking. love. ducktales 2017. ive said a million times before that i think its like a perfect encapsulation of what a reboot should be, something that obviously has a lot of love and respect for the original that its rebooting, but isn't afraid to incorporate entirely new ideas or deviate from pre-established "rules" or roles of the previous installments/versions of the characters and story, so on and so forth. i think it blends the family sitcom and action adventure elements really well together, its got a great ensemble of charming characters, i think most of the over-arching storylines it sets up are executed really well and it has a lot of fun one-off stories. its not perfect but its damn near close, in my opinion. also as much as i hate disney the corporate i do still love donald duck hes the best legacy disney character ok american moment over

the secret saturdays: i was a HUGE fan of the show as it was coming out but didnt remember much of it as i got older until i rewatched it, whereupon i found out just how much it fucking holds up, oh my g0d. i genuinely cannot believe its not more popular considering its premise, and again i think the story and character writing really hold up !!!!!! it has fantastic twists, you are immediately endeared not just to the saturday family but a lot of the other supporting characters, its overreaching storyline is executed so so well especially when you consider it was unfortunately gutted and prematurely cancelled by CN. some parts of it may be a little dated but again i think for the years it was developed and coming out there are some elements that were kind of ahead of the curve. if you havent watched the secret saturdays PLEEEASE please do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im fucking begging you. its good

ben 10: i think ben 10 might be my white whale. for important context i was scared to death of the original series as it was actively coming out when i was like, 6 years old, only to get extremely invested in it and the "original universe" franchise in like late middle school/early high school, and then they fucking got my ass AGAIN as a current twenty-something. every time i think im out they fucking pull me right back in. i know its a dumb meat headed action cartoon for little children but the wasted potential in this franchise is nothing short of insane, i wouldnt be saying this if they didnt literally bring up certain threads and ideas in the show only to be like, actually who gives a fuck ! that being said its a premise that sticks with you forever. to quote that one post

justice league unlimited: i dont post much about superhero cartoons on here but make no mistake they were hugely influential to me when i was a kid, my dad was and still is a huge marvel nerd but unfortunately for marvel (and my dad) their cartoon game was (and honestly, still kind of is) just aaaaabsolute trash, except for the ones about the x-men, but thats a ramble for another day. it wont surprise you to know a lot of the writing staff for the justice league and justice league unlimited cartoons would go on to work on the original ben 10 continuity so they have a lot of the same issues, but i would be lying if i didnt say jlu had a huge effect on my little baby brain, arguably maybe more than ben 10. why unlimited and not the original justice league cartoon of the aughts you ask ? well because jlu is hornier, and also booster gold is there

discovery kids favorites: this is technically cheating cuz its 3 cartoons, BUT ! i dont remember them enough on their own to put any one above the other. as a kid my mom hated cartoons (and honestly most tv programming aimed at children) and hated me and my sisters watching them in the room with her, or in general, for more than like 15 minutes a day, unless they were educational, and so i felt extremely clever for exploiting the discovery kids loophole bc they were cartoons made to teach you stuff. the ones i remember the most vividly and fondly were tutenstein, grossology, and growing up creepie, which i feel like honestly. says a lot about me. i should rewatch those sometime.

samurai jack: i will not argue against the fact that genndy tartakovsky is a tremendously talented individual, and a lot of his work has been extremely inspirational to me, that being said, if given the chance, i would drop an anvil on his head. i probably shouldnt say that but i cant express to you how much a lot of his work frustrates me and samurai jack really takes the cake. i cant even talk about season 5 but a lot of stuff in seasons 1-4 has problems that i feel like should be addressed, THAT BEING SAID, in spite of it all, i still fucking love samurai jack. i have fond memories of it from when i was a kid and during the collective resurgence it had as the 5th season was coming out, i cant argue that it doesnt have a lot going for it or pretend that again it isnt responsible for a lot of my own personal artistic inspirations.

class of 3000: I KNOW IVE BEEN POSTING ABOUT THIS A LOT LATELY BUT ITS NOT JUST CUZ OF THAT ! this last rewatch hasnt been my first, ive genuinely brought up this show to a lot of people both online and irl in the desperate hope other people remembered it because it was one of my absolute favorites as a kid and i remember the visceral feeling of how unfair it felt when i found out at like age 9 that it had been cancelled and there would never be another episode of it again. i think it just came into my life at the right place at the same time, i was both getting really into drawing and coming up with little stories myself and so the art and the cast really drew me in, and i had a music teacher at the time who was really into jazz and blues music and seeing that reflected in a cartoon i was watching was so cool :v] and again i just think so much of it holds up. its a gem i dont think should be hidden

spongebob (but only the first four seasons and the movie): im almost 25 so this is supremely unoriginal. its not that i think the newer/newest stuff is all bad its just that everybody gets one thing to be unreasonably blinded by nostalgia about and for me its early spongebob. the userbase on here is aging you all know what im talking about i dont need to explain this pick

the owl house: i really like the owl house for what it is ! its not for everybody, i know people tend to think it kind of skews towards "children's cartoon that is targeted for adults who still watch that stuff" but i think thats kind of cynical and not very generous to the cast and crew, i know the show got pitched around a bit before disney picked up on it but i dont think its fair to exclude the care and thought that went into re-adapting it for a broader and therefore younger audience, and the care that went into it in general ! i like its take on the fantasy setting, both the main and minor cast clearly have a lot of love and thought put into them, genuinely i think luz is maybe one of my favorite cartoon protagonists ever, the messaging it tries to get across i think comes from a personal place and is thus very earnest and sweet, and much like the secret saturdays i think its able to accomplish a lot in the limited time it was given. the whole show just feels like a labor of love to me and i just like the way that comes through !

since this was hard here are some honorable mentions:

batman the brave and the bold: wouldnt be fair to bring up a superhero cartoon and not mention this. i was pretty obsessed with this rendition of batman as a kid, unsurprising since i unironically loved the joel schumacher batman & robin movie and liked to catch the adam west batman re-runs they would play at the wee hours of the morning when i couldnt sleep, i think brave and the bold channels both of those a lot, its deeply stupid and kind of sucks in a lot of areas but thats also kind of part of the charm

3below: so i watched the first season of this before ever watching trollhunters, and while i recognize trollhunters is on a lot of levels the superior tales of arcadia cartoon i just like 3below the best. the stakes of trollhunters can get a little exhausting and i think 3below lets itself get a bit more goofy, plus its about a little group of "fish out of water" aliens !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love fish out of water stories AND aliens, what do you want me to do

fangbone!: real sofa fans remember my fangbone phase. ongoing actually cuz hes still my icon. its one of those cheaply produced flash canadian cartoons but from my perspective i think it was made by people who actually put more effort than was expected of them, which i like, and again its another fish out of water story, and the graphic novel its based on is also very cute

dwampyverse cartoons: phineas and ferb and milo murphy's law mostly ! pnf was very impactful on me as a kid and i loved the first season of mml. i think theyve reached a kind of oversaturation maybe ? that has made me juuust a little bit jaded about them, but i cant pretend like i still dont hold plenty of fondness for em in my heart

unicorn warriors eternal: see the above points about genndy tartakovsky in the samurai jack bulletpoint. the premise is a really cool one and the first season managed to be really good in ways i didnt think it would be but theres still the second season, so im scared. i hope its good. ive got the clown make up ready to go just in case though.

lastman: don't watch lastman. we all have our own cross to bear, alright, and this one's mine. i watched lastman, so you don't even have to worry about it, i mean i haven't finished the second season yet so i will, so don't watch lastman, please. im telling you as your friend, don't watch lastman. we all make mistakes sometimes, like for example, i watched lastman, both in french and english. if you watch lastman than my sacrifices will have been for nothing. don't watch it, and don't look up the comic either. im completely serious.

big city greens: im very picky about sitcoms and sitcom-type faire, but big city greens takes i think a very flat and tbh cynical gimmick and explores it with a lot of heartfelt earnestness, its hard not to be charmed by it. just pure comfort food tv to me.

danger & eggs: fun fact !!!!!! the cartoon that made me decide to make this sideblog !!! i keep meaning to revisit it, i would recommend checking it out if you havent before, both its premise and humor is very idiosyncratic and sweet to me, again its just another show that feels like it came very a place very near and dear to the creator's heart and i just always love to see that. if i had kids of my own which i never will i would definitely show it to them

The start of the “Phil and Phriends” Stereo shows and SO MANY videos in December 2020. He announced these on December 1. The actual live show was on December 2, so a few days before he got this edited and posted.

Phil’s last collab with Louise on his channel (including Dan) was in 2016, and the only previous video he had with just her was back in 2013.

0:01 - he started doing this little “preview” thing in his December videos

0:22 - Christmas Phil! also, I forgot he did a tiny filmed intro for this one to introduce the Stereo shows. this black shirt and the long quiff...yes

0:39 - he must have recorded this after the live show (or he’s just predicting a “large lol”)

0:45 - always weird to see the mirrored image of him

1:24 - even though it’s mostly Louise saying it and not Phil, an age mention/conversation is strange on Phil’s channel. he doesn’t really talk about how old he is ever

1:49 - I enjoy that Phil put in some of his usual editing touches

2:16 - DNP did not have room for a lot of Christmas decorating with just living in the filming flat at this point. those lights on the plant and the tiny tree (🥺) were about it

I don’t think I’ve rewatched this since it was posted. (And I did listen to the Stereo show live as well.) This first show was pretty messy, because the app did not seem prepared for the number of people listening so Phil and/or Louise dropped off a few times. Phil did a good job making it flow together with the editing for the video version!

Dan was also popping out of his cave more (1, 2), which definitely fueled the speculation that he would be one of the Stereo guests.

Yesterday, I watched the final episode of Saber; and when I was talking about how I felt about the show, I mentioned that I wished it could have pulled off a Blade. Where it had an ending that was so forcefully, energizingly emotional; so beautiful and poignant in so many ways that it recontextualised the entire show for me into something I loved and put all the pieces together. For me, that unfortunately didn’t happen with Saber.

What I haven’t mentioned is that it’s very much what happened with OOO.

Kamen Rider OOO is a messy show. I want to get that out of the way and I want to make that clear. It’s not exactly the messiest one out there given Kamen Rider’s history but it’s certainly far from perfect; you’ve got what I consider a very good, very well-rounded first third; but the middle is a bit... middling? There’s some great ideas and episodes in there but a lot of it gets jumbled up and lost in a sea of conflicting concepts. In particular I found it hard to get attached to much of what was going on; it was decent episodic Tokusatsu but it was missing that spark, that little bit of extra oomph to really sell me on the characters. I’m maybe not putting this as best I can, but I just don’t find a lot of that middle section totally engaging and it did make me reconsider a lot of my feelings towards this show, especially as Ghost right alongside it was nailing the format.

But then Eiji gets the Putotyra medals. And while it gets off to a slightly rough start, you’re suddenly thrown right back into a whirlwind of excitement and emotion with all of OOO’s themes coming to the fore; all of these ideas of desire for one thing, but most importantly the connections forged between all of these characters and especially Ankh and Eiji. Ankh’s turn against Eiji is one of the highlights of the show in a way that we all knew it was always coming, just not how it would happen or what would happen next: how would it resolve? Where would his relationship with Eiji be by the end of the show?

Given this culminates in one of the most beloved, most well-remembered endings in Kamen Rider history; I probably don’t need to tell you that where it ended up tugs super tight at the heartstrings, do I?

It’s the episode and relationship that broke many a person’s heart; that still has people wishing sorely for a follow up 10 years later; that sold about a billion Tajador figures and Taka medals. A relationship so beloved that this very ending was changed in advance as the writer got piles of letters from kids writing in to say how much they wish Ankh got a happy ending. And y’know, when I hear that little story... it’s so on point for what OOO is about? A man who meets a monster and strikes a deal for power; but in doing so, grants the monster a life and soul he could never have dreamed of. Where the monster becomes more like the man and the man becomes more like the monster. Where the monster saves the man with every bit of life he has left, and that’s fine, that satisfies him -- because finally, instead of just existing, he was able to live.

A story where the monster teaches the man that he can live for himself; that others are there for him; that he can accept help. It’s not a lesson he meant to teach at first, but how could it not happen? This is the big part that resonated for me when I initially watched Kamen Rider OOO a few years ago. It’s a great thing that Tokusatsu is able to do -- it takes morals and ideas that are simple and basic, but understands why those simple basics are important; and crafts wonderful stories around them. Sometimes I did get so lost in the complex world I found myself in in the days following 2016, and watching Tokusatsu helped bring me some sense of normalcy and grounding. Kamen Rider OOO is a show that just... that just made me realise it’s okay to ask for help, and that while putting yourself through so much to help others may come from noble intentions; you need to step back and look after yourself. And those are obvious lessons, but again; the draw of Tokusatsu here to me is how well it teaches these lessons and how well it re-teaches them! Eiji Hino is a character I saw a lot of myself in back then and had such an impact on me emotionally; and watching this ending again really had me crying. I don’t often literally shed tears at media but this moment where Ankh’s disappeared, but everyone else Ankh has touched throughout the show and forged bonds with, become a family with? It got me. It got me all over again.

Through this rewatch, I do feel like my eyes have been opened to the flaws of this show. That it’s not the perfect series I built it up to be in my memories, where every little thing came together and every character was a masterpiece. There’s a lot of things that just don’t work about the show and don’t go as smoothly as they could. But ultimately, OOO is a show that I adored at the time three years ago; that all this time has been such an important story to me and has gotten me through a lot, and it’s difficult to think of many better ways to celebrate its 10th anniversary and Kamen Rider’s 50th anniversary by watching this show, which used to be my favourite - and still ranks very high! - and seeing what I think of it years later. Because I’ve changed a lot, and part of that is down to this show... and again, while it has its problems; it’s Kamen Rider OOO. It’s a beautiful, wonderful show about two men slowly finding themselves in each other with one of the most emotionally striking endings in Kamen Rider history.

Ella and Hailee bring this intensity, where it feels like you as a viewer are just witnessing the scene rather than watching it - if that makes any sense at all. You feel like you have no power or influence over their relationship.

2. Have you ever read a fanfic about 2? - So much. Like you don't even know. Your ships are either canon endgame or it has really good fanfiction. You can't have it both ways.

3. Has a picture of 4 ever been your screen saver/profile picture/tumblr screen saver? - Yes. The aesthetics in that movie are great.

4. If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be? - *cries laughing* well they had the worst break up ever that traumatised me at the age of nine and I'm still recovering today.

5. Why is 1 so important? - Because its the Greatest love story on Television. Possibly ever.

6. Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship? - Both.

7. Out of all the ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry? - Derek and Casey. Everyone else can go home.

8. Out of all your ships listed, which ship has the strongest bond? - I would say Xena and Gabrielle. Because they're literal soulmates who find each other in every version of reality/universe.

9. How many times have you read/watched the 10’s fandom? - I recently rewatched Wolfblood a few months ago and honestly its one of the more beautiful shows that have ever watched. I live near where it was shot. I remember seeing one of the sets once. Honestly one of the most exciting days of my life.

10. Which ship has lasted the longest? - Xena and Gabrielle. They got frozen together for 25 years. Don't ask.

11. How many times, if ever, has 6 broken up? - I would say once so far?? I don't know. Their relationship is very complicated because they're both women in the 1800s and no lesbian relationship, especially under their circumstances, really stood a chance to thrive.

12. If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive, 2 or 8? - Ooo I don't know, I feel like both relationships would stand a chance to make it out alive. But I feel like Cory and Shawn would because they would laugh all the way through it the whole time.

13. Did 7 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason?- Um..kind of. Well Doctor and Rose's relationship was subtextual for the most part. They never said they were together. But everyone watching could see that they were.

14. Is 4 still together? - Well it depends on how you see the ending. Oskar becomes Eli's carer or becomes a vampire like him. I read the short sequel in 'Let the Old Dreams Die' that the author John Ajvide Lindqvist, wrote where Oskar and Eli are still together after 20 years and are vampires. So that's my ending.

15. Is 10 canon? - Yes. They're happily living together in Canada now. Thats all that matters.

16. If all 10 ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win? - Xena and Gabrielle because they're both warriors.

17. Has anybody ever tried to sabotage 5’s ship? - Yes. Multiple times. But they always pulled through, because they always kept choosing each other in the end. James and Riley were relationship goals for me back in the day.

18. Which ship would you defend to the death and beyond? - Derek and Casey. No question.

19. Do you spend hours a day going through 3’s tumblr page? - Ah for that. Out with Dad would have to have a tumblr fandom. And it doesn't sadly.

20. If an evil witch descended from the sky and told you that you had to pick one of the ten ships to break up forever or else she’d break them all forever, which ship would you sink? - Well Doctor and Rose is already broken up forever. :'(

the amount of sadness i feel hearing kilgharrah say “none of us can choose our destiny, merlin. and none of us can escape it” is INSANE cuz in season one you can SEE merlin trying to escape it. hes doing his damned best trying to have some control over his life. and then in later seasons you can see the light slowly drain from his eyes as he becomes just another toy for the gods to be entertained by. he realises he cant control a single thing about his life so he does the one thing he can: protect arthur. and he loses SO MUCH because of it! its not fair, he deserved so much, and when he finally got everything he could ever ask for, it was taken away from him by his own mistakes.

Conclusion: this episode is a 10/10 greatest episode with so many iconic scenes omg. mary collins u will forever have my heart for unintentionally kickstarting merlin and arthurs relationship destiny. i loved the whole thing and oh GOD does it already hurt knowing full well how the show ends

all the christmas disney stuff sounds really fun! glad you're getting to do that this year. oh, whoa, riding a camel sounds like a weird experience. it is a bumpy ride? haha 😋

a fake tree sounds nice! i've always thought decorating for the holidays was really fun. cookies are delicious. that sounds like a lot of fun. what kind of cookies do you like?

i enjoy looking at christmas lights too. even better if there are cookies to munch on and christmas music playing in the car haha

interesting. i don't really like any of those foods tbh, but i know i'm probably in the minority on that.

for the holidays i really like decorating. i do it for halloween and christmas. and i really like listening to holiday music, really helps get me into the spirit. also holiday movies are my jam haha

what are some disney movies that you expected to be really good but were disappointed in? what do you think the creators could have done to make them better?

its been a while since i rode a camel but i remember it feeling like riding a horse just taller lol. fun fact i also rode an elephant at the county fair when i was like 10.

we made the good ol pillsbury holiday cookies! left over from the last socal style sector party with @han-is-solo and @johnrutter. (we made halloween ones at our halloween party too lol). in general tho, i like lots of cookies. we actually got some to go from the restaurant we went to tonight, a couple different kinds of chocolate chip and a pumpkin cookie. the chocolate chip sadly wasnt that good even tho chocolate is usually my fav but the pumpkin was really good. might go down and have another bite after im done answering this lol.

the lights drive thru i did last year had a special radio station! i think you could order food too but since this was prior to vaccines rolling out we were too scared to even open our windows lol.

my best friend hates thanksgiving food so youre in good company lol.

i enjoy all that too! its been fun getting to decorate in my condo after living in a dorm for four years. i decorate it for halloween too, and it was fun to have decorations up for both of this years socal style sector premiere parties. speaking of holiday movies, we watched mickeys christmas carol, a charlie brown christmas, and part of frosty the snowman while we put up the tree today! do you have any fav holiday movies?

ooo thats a really good question cuz ive def gotten that feeling a number of times!

- the good dinosaur. thats my most definitive answer to this question. i was HYPE for that movie. a pixar movie with talking animals that had super cute designs (and would and DID make for great plush lol)! i went into 2015 thinking that would far surpass inside out as my preferred pixar release of the year, but it ended up being the other way around. i rewatched it earlier this year for the first time since i saw it in theaters and i was really able to solidify my opinions on it and i feel about the same about it as i did initially. in short, its just too slow. there are too many scenes with little to no dialogue and a good chunk of the movie is just two characters which i feel is inherently boring. i think there's a difference between movies that are unambitious and aren't trying to be some great feat so it's okay if they're not amazing and movies that are trying way too hard to be something amazing and fall short. for example, cars 2 (which i've already mentioned lol). people hate it but imo it was never TRYING to be as good as like...up or something. it was just trying to be fun and i think it succeeded. on the other hand, the good dinosaur advertised itself as pixar's next big epic adventure movie and ended up just being very boring.

on a more personal note, it was my first time seeing a movie at the el capitan in hollywood since moving to california which would then become a tradition that ive kept up to this day, so the expectations were very high. it almost made it an even WORSE experience being in a theater with such high energy bc people were laughing super hard at things that i just didn't find funny. i remember being stressed for the rest of that night bc id wasted so much hype on something that was ultimately disappointing.

as far as what i think they could've done better....this is gonna sound harsh but i think they should've scrapped it altogether lol. BUT i have a reason for that. this movie went through production hell with director and cast changes and major changes to the characters. rather than salvage it and force it to be released, i think they should've just realized it wasn't working and stop trying to fix something that just isn't gonna work no matter what. if not that, id say add more characters to arlo and spot's journey and add more dialogue. (keep spot mute tho, i did like that aspect of it).

- moana. i do like this movie, dont get me wrong, but i feel like it plays into way too many predictable and overused tropes. particularly maui giving up on moana almost immediately after he finally took a liking to her, and then deciding to come back after for no apparent reason. i remember the scene where he leaves after moana breaks his hook literally making my blood boil in the theater bc i hate that trope so much. to make it better, i feel like their relationship needed a little more development, more evidence of why they're starting to like each other, a longer buildup to maui leaving her, and a longer buildup to maui coming back.

- christopher robin. another one i like but not as much as id hoped. at first, this seemed like the live action remake that was finally gonna do it right imo. id actually always kinda wanted a movie about a grown up christopher robin. but i feel like it leaned too hard into being cheesy, hokey, and predictable. but there were some dark scenes too. i feel like it just needed a little more balance in tone. i also have mixed feelings about the fact that the toys are actually alive in this universe. i feel like maybe only christopher robin and his daughter should be able to see them as alive bc of their childlike sense of wonder, yknow?

- luca. again liked but not as much as id hoped. i thought this had the potential to be a new hyperfixation tbh. i loved the character design the world and the premise. but i feel like the conflict was kind of weird. the scene where alberto tries to scare giulia as a sea monster didnt make a lot of sense to me. i didnt really get either luca or albertos motives, but especially albertos. its not super fresh in my mind tho tbh so id need to watch it again to say for sure what bugged me about it. i also don't totally get how luca and alberto were SO close even tho they hadn't even known each other that long. and like alberto said luca got him off the island but like they both chose to go to portorosso??? also right from the beginning it was painfully obvious to me that alberto's father abandoned him yet they tried to make it some big reveal. i felt like there were some plotholes too, like why does alberto spend most of his time above the surface even before meeting luca? why did he and his dad LIVE above the surface? i cant quite say how id make it better. i do feel like their friendship should involve a conflict followed by resolution but i feel like it needed one that was more fleshed out.

- encanto. again, like but have some issues with. i REALLY tried to just let myself enjoy this one bc im sick of picking apart every one of the last number of disney and pixar releases but i kinda couldnt help myself. kinda like luca and moana, i also found this one pretty predictable. i felt like the dos oruguitas scene didnt tell us anything we didnt already know. i felt like surface pressure and what else can i do kinda told the same message. bruno's story was also a bit confusing to me, i didn't totally get how him leaving was to protect mirabel and like he doesnt CHOOSE what hes gonna see, why does he get blamed for that but like idk pepa doesnt get blamed for bad weather? the concept of the "gift" was also a little confusing to me, like the literal original purpose of it was to protect the family so how did it take so long for abuela to understand that the wellbeing of the family is whats most important. this is another one where idrk how id fix it, there are a lot of aspects of it i just find confusing.

actually ignore everything i just said im mainly disappointed with the lack of capybara content @deweyduck am i right

- frozen 2. i didn't have THAT high of expectations for this one, i was already sick of frozen around when it came out, but i really did try to dip back into the hype phase i was in for the first frozen. alas, it wasn't worth it. this is another one i just find confusing. it's weird to me that elsa is the fifth spirit since she's human and the other spirits are animals or creatures (or....air). she also makes ice so isnt that the same as water?? also idk why but it took me like 3 times of watching it to fully understand where she got her powers from lmao. i also feel like they fucked up kristoff's character. he didnt even KNOW anna before frozen 1 and now he acts like he has no life without her. and their whole conflict is caused by a MISUNDERSTANDING. like anna literally left cuz she had to it had nothing to do with kristoff. also i hate how batshit crazy the internet went over him saying "i'm here, what do you need?" like yes a guy should be there for his girl but they also make it sound like he shouldn't ask for a single thing for himself which doesn't sound healthy (but im aro so what do i know). then you have olaf who all of a sudden has a concept of aging which is given no explanation. and don't even get me started on how messed up it was that they thought it was ok to just make their white characters poc and make iduna native even tho her skin is clearly darker when shes a child than when shes an adult. and the internet never talked about that. hm. gonna be honest and say this is another one i wish just didnt happen lmao. i get that the franchise is so popular and a sequel is something a lot of people wanted, but i dont think its fair to break a disney rule (of having no WDAS canon sequels post rescuers down under, or winnie the pooh if were counting that) JUST bc of the hype. sure they evened out a tiny bit with also doing ralph breaks the internet but i have a load of problems with that movie too so was it really worth it fhdjgkhfdjk.

wanna see you keep talking about AT: what's your biggest criticism with each character in the series (as in a writing failure/something you didn't like about them, things of that sort)

Aww fuck! Now you’re asking.

Everyone: Sometimes they went a bit too far with making the characters act dumb, sociopathic, etc. The show would usually be pretty consistent with having them react humanely. It was season 5, when the show had started taking itself seriously, that the characters acting sociopathic felt like a bit too much.

Finn: In his “jerk arc” he went too far. He had no empathy for the lemon people, he had even less than PB, who was already acting pretty sociopathic. He legitimately harrassed both FP and PB. He touched FP’s shoulder and made her uncomfortable. He stroked PB’s hand after the high five in Too Old, which by the way has actually been cut in many countries due to how gross it was. He got super weird in Rattleballs where he was a total simp and told PB about the robot even though he knew she’d kill him, just because he wanted to impress her. Then in The Tower, he had tunnel vision and legitimately KILLED like a dozen candy people with his tower, which was hilariously referenced in Hot Diggety Doom when he said the candy people don’t trust him anymore. I didn’t like that they made his arm grow back. Or that he kissed a million princesses in Breezy, which is a poor reflection on the crew’s treatment of girl characters in the show :P I know we ended up with the awesome Fern arc, and Finn got over his romantic hangups in a satisfying way, but the amount of people the episode alienated is unreal. It did a lot of damage to the fandom.

PB: I hate the entire way they baited her having feelings for Finn. If you remove that kiss in Too Young, her character makes much more sense. Reading her around it makes the ep seem like a massive inconsistency. I don’t like they waited four seasons to work on her as an actual character. I feel like they went a bit too far in making her cold and pragmatic or sociopathic. Just a smidgen. This is because some of her actions verge on irredeemable. I’m mostly thinking about her relationship with Flame Princess. It doesn’t seem right she’d have no feelings about ruining the life of a fairly innocent child. Also she totally got a bunch of flame people killed in The Cooler. At least in The Cooler, she demonstrated a modicum of doubt before taking apart the sacred Fire Giants. She’s certainly not like the Diamonds, but FP was right to say she was a bad person, and I’m glad she was horrified by what she was becoming, but couldn’t immediately turn off her paranoia or bad instincts - it’s something she works on for the rest of the show and post-canon. (It’s also why shes a million times better than the Diamonds) I think her character in season 10 could have been better handled. For start we got no followup to Elements. It’s pretty significant she became a giant candy monster and brainwashed all of Ooo, no???? It did take them two seasons but they eventually showed she was impacted by having been possessed by the Lich. I was hoping we’d get exploration with Elements too, especially because of how much she unintentionally hurt everyone, like Marceline. They tied her actions in the series far too much to her character for it to feel like something that could be brushed off. But what was weirdest was that she wanted to go to war with one of her creations. That didn’t seem right. Pb has a complicated relationship with Lemongrab, shown right up through to the same finale (even exploring how they would currently interact in Diamonds & Lemons), and she didn’t want to go to war with him, but she did want to get him usurped by Lemonhope. If she is willing to stoop to war now, why didn’t she just... yknow.... have Gumbald executed? Stealth plan? It seems far more up her alley, and he even tried the same thing. The season finale tried to say she felt under pressure to go to war, but I don’t think it does a good job at communicating why. Why wouldn’t a secret mission work? Would it count as a war crime? If it did, who would sanction her? Gumbald in general sucks. There are better “dark reflections” of Bubblegum in the series, and Patience was a much better villain. I wonder how things would have been different if the season could conclude at its intended pace?

Marceline: My criticism with Marceline is a lot easier to summarise, because I’ve thought about her less and she’s less involved with the show.... which is the WHOLE PROBLEM!

1. Put Marceline in the show more. She was barely in the first six seasons at all! She’s such an awesome and fun character when they let her be. More eps like Go With Me would have been awesome. Even more eps like Princess Day or Be Sweet, where she was LSP’s bestie.

2. Her character’s personality, for a long time, revolved around being a source of angst. She wasn’t demonstrating her fun side at all. I guess they didn’t want to write her continuing to be a big jerk, but it meant she paled when pitched against the rest of the cast - especially PB and Ice King, who were always great, and if they were in an ep with Marceline, their characters always outshone her. This could have been repaired by having her go on more adventures with Finn and Jake, and developing Marceline’s reactions to various situations. Give her more complexity. I really love Obsidian because Marceline demonstrates her wild side in this ep and goes on an adventure which is very personal to her. She has some cool action scenes near the start, and this episode connects her more serious personality with the comedic representation at the start of the series. I think this is the best Marceline episode, followed by Varmints (she was so fun but mature in this ep). I like how she was during and after Stakes too. She had far more personality when they were putting her in eps with multiple other characters.

Ice King: I have no massive thoughts here. I think some of the things he did were a bit too messed up. He killed a bunch of cloud people and furniture in season 6. His actions before that point were far more innocuous, though he did accidentally kill PB those two times, and he did threaten to kill princesses after kidnapping them in season 1. I LOVE Ice King season 7 and up though. He’s so good. I was shocked at the finale when they “killed” him, had him revert into Simon with very few consequences, like all those years as Ice King had vanished. I was so glad to see Simon struggling with his past identity in Obsidian. “This is how I cope!”

Jake: Like the others barring Marceline, I thought that Jake occasionally did stuff that was too messed up. But because he’s a less serious character, who is already verging on chaotic good/neutral, it isn’t as impactful. I don’t have any major issues with Jake. Maybe I’ll change my mind on rewatch? But I love how he can be so self-contradictory.

Flame Princess: Last one I want to bring up. This character is a mess. Rebecca intended her to be this very innocent person, having new experiences. This was how she was characterised right through to Earth and Water, but after that episode, her character got... an unfortunate reset. Suddenly a mature and BORING ruler who barely appeared anymore in the show. I felt a lot more could have been done with Flame Princess, and they shouldn’t have made her so dull later on. They played her as a virtuous character who got over her breakup with maturity, and led her kingdom with honesty, to further the development of two entirely different characters rather than to make FP interesting in herself.

A Ponderous Rewatch: Battle for the Planet and Cameos

You know, I keep trying to be minimal with the amount of images I put in these posts, but I think it’s kind of a losing battle…especially when it comes to episodes animated by TMS like the second one coming later on today. I can’t help it, some of the expressions and poses are just too good to not be shared.

In any case, let’s begin with one very small cameo appearance in “Space Probed”:

Our little duo have apparently found themselves abducted by aliens, only to be kept in lab conditions much like the one on Earth at ACME Labs. This is one of those times where I wish I could know the production order of these episodes and not just the air date order… Why? Well, because this small cameo could potentially line up really well with an upcoming episode. Just keep that in mind for now.

With that out of the way, we move on to our next full skit:

And we begin with the Brain expositing to Pinky about how he came up with the plan for this episode.

“Halloween, Pinky: 1938. Mercury Radio Theatre presented an adaptation of H. G. Wells’ ‘War of the Worlds’ that was so realistic, people actually fled the cities believing that creatures from Mars were attacking the Earth. It proved that radio was a powerful tool…and now, Pinky, the advance of technology has brought us an even more powerful tool. Do you know what that is?”

Before we move on, how many of you reading this have heard about this? And how many of you know that this is actually an incident that happened in real life? Yes, people actually fled their homes after hearing this broadcast. Not a lot of people, of course. Not by a long shot. Most just made panicked phone calls to their local police station or to the radio station itself to find out what was really going on. The incident also wasn’t nationwide or anything like that, it was quite local. If anything, the radio play caused much more outrage after the fact than initial panic.

Another amusing anecdote is that Orson Welles was the man who directed, narrated, and played a main character in the broadcast. For those of you who may not be in the know, although Brain was initially based on animator and writer Tom Minton at Warner Brothers, Brain’s voice actor Maurice LaMarche based his voice on Orson Welles. Or, well, as Mr. LaMarche puts it: “The Brain is 70 percent Welles, 20 percent Vincent Price, and I don't know, there's another 10 percent of something else in there. I don't know what. Some people think it's Peter Lorre. I don't know what it is.”.

Strong references aside, I’m betting most of you can see the massive holes in the Brain’s plan already. Hoo boy…

“Umm… The rubber band?”

“The workings of your mind are a mystery to me, Pinky.”

“Ooo! I love a good mystery, Brain!”

You know, this little sequence with Brain nonchalantly stretching the rubber band while walking away from Pinky and Pinky determinedly holding on until Brain lets go off camera and sends Pinky flying is… Well, I don’t know what it is about it, but it’s kind of cute in a weird slapstick way? Like, it’s hard to tell if Brain did that on purpose to send Pinky flying for not understanding his plan…or if he actually wanted Pinky to follow him and tried to lead him to where he was walking but Pinky thought it was some kind of tug-o-war game and Brain got exasperated and let go of the rubber band.

Either way, Pinky doesn’t seem to mind.

“Television, Pinky, is our new tool!”

“We will pirate the airwaves and stage a hoax like ‘War of the Worlds’!”

Brain, you’re very good with that lasso. I’m impressed!

“Three cameras, Brain?”

“Yes… A technique pioneered by the great Desi Arnaz. And with them we will scare the people of the cities, leaving no resistance behind. We will have taken over the world!”

Well, Brain, that technique first being used by Desi Arnaz is a myth (it was more than likely actually pioneered by Jerry Fairbanks around 1947), but I’m going to give you a pass on this because you likely couldn’t fact check this very well at the time.

I do have to give Brain credit for being as dramatic as possible while announcing his plan, though. He really does know how to put on a show.

“Egad, Brain, brilliant!”

And Pinky is, as usual, full of praise and extremely excited about the plan. Look at him clapping and hopping around, aww… I’m starting to think that half the reason Brain goes through with these long, expository explanations of his plans to Pinky despite Pinky not quite following along a lot of the time is just to impress Pinky. Brain needs reassurance and Pinky always provides.

“Oh! Oh, wait, no, no…”

“Why would they be scared of us? We’re so small and we’re practically the size of mice, Brain.”

“We are mice, Pinky.”

“Oh, right! Well, there you are, then. Eh heh heh…”

…Okay, so, Pinky also tends to deflate the praise a bit when pointing out potential flaws in the plan like this, but it’s the initial thought that counts.

Yeah, I know, Brain. I know. But Pinky really is trying to be helpful.

“It’s not a question of size, Pinky. It’s a question of scale! Watch the monitor.”

“*gasp* Zounds, Brain! You’re gigantic!”

“Television, Pinky: The Great Deceptor!”

“Narf~…”

No, you aren’t seeing things. Pinky just…just stands there in front of the TV looking at live footage of a close-up of Brain and sighs in awe and affection while clasping his little hands together. I don’t even think I need to make a “Fellas, is it gay to--?” joke here. All that’s missing is little hearts appearing around his head.

We cut to a little while later, where the duo has everything set up for their broadcast. It looks like Pinky must have done the lettering for their props, since it actually looks decent and nothing like Brain’s scrawlings. Yes, I’m going to continue roasting Brain’s terrible penmanship. It amuses me.

“How is my disguise, Pinky?”

“OH! Is that you, Brain?!?”

“You flatter me, Pinky. Now, throw the switch and let us begin…the Battle for the Planet!”

Title drop! Also, aww. To be fair, Brain, I’m not sure Pinky was intending to be flattering so much as he was actually unsure if that really was you or not. But the fact that you took it as flattery is very telling, I think.

Pinky throws the switch, and the plan is officially underway!

According to the Animaniacs wiki, these people bear a striking resemblance to Elmyra’s family. If that’s what was intended, this is quite the early omen for the horrible “Pinky, Elmyra, and the Brain” spin-off that was made after the regular PatB spin-off. I don’t think I’m going to fully cover that show in the far future. It’s not the fun kind of terrible…it’s just terrible.

Oh hey, they were watching Family Matters! Too bad this is many, many years before they could bear witness to Dark Urkle Tribute.

And there’s Ralph, enjoying coffee and a doughnut.

And…some TV station broadcast folks. It kinda bothers me that these two basically have the same model except for different hair colours.

“We interrupt your regular broadcast to bring you this important news bulletin…”

“What is that?!”

“Someone’s pirated the TV lines!”

“Scientists have just reported that a large, unidentified flying object seems to be heading towards Earth. There is no cause for alarm…”

“…But there probably will be.”

Subtle, Brain.

Oh, hi, Warners! You certainly picked a good time to escape tonight.

“We take you now to our satellite view of the planet, perhaps to catch a glimpse of this fearful courier of the unknown.”

Cue Pinky making ridiculous “shoosh” and “shoom” and “weee!~” noises. Very convincing.

“I’ve just received word that the UFO is about to crash land nearby. There should be a great explosion!”

“I said, THERE SHOULD BE A GREAT EXPLOSION!”

“Hmm? Oh! OH, right, Brain! Narf!”

Nice blep, pinky.

Somehow, people watching the broadcast are still terrified. I’ve gotta admit that I didn’t expect this plan to go this well for this long.

…Okay, maybe I spoke too soon.

“Sorry, Brain…”

“…We’ll go live to the crash site momentarily.”

He says before near-instantly cutting to the “crash site”, still in the same disguise. Brain, honey, I know you’re probably trying to reduce broadcast downtime so that the audience doesn’t start to question what they’re seeing, but you do know that quick cuts like this ruin the illusion of this being a live broadcast…right?

Oh, who am I kidding? Of course he doesn’t know that. As usual, Brain has tunnel vision and expects his plans to go one certain way, and any details that don’t fit his internal narrative are discarded or not even thought about.

Just let me slide on in…

“I’m reporting to you live from the crash site and I…I’m at a loss for words. Can we get a shot of this very frightening scene?”

He’s right. That’s the most frightening…ly obvious cardboard spaceship I have ever seen.

But okay, I love these tiny prop improvisations they had to do. The bare cardboard wings taped to some kind of spray can for the body of the ship, a stray water cooler cup for the cone, test tubes for the thrusters, random little sewing pins for some kind of antenna, a dirty beige blanket to simulate soil for the crash zone… It’s so hastily cobbled together yet so goddamn cute.

Ralph still seems convinced that this is real, though that isn’t saying much.

“I am now positioned close to the…well, I can only assume that this is a vehicle from outer space, its occupants here to destroy the Earth.”

“Oooo!~ OoooOOOooo!~”

“Wait! There is a strange noise emanating from inside. Something seems to be coming out of the ship!”

They made a glove into an alien space suit with a tiny peephole to accommodate Pinky’s face and they fashioned a little belt from something for it, aaaaa! This is so adorable! Look at Pinky trying to be scary! He’s just all >:B throughout this entire scene.

I’m wondering why they couldn’t label it as “bug spray”. I’ve honestly never heard of it being called “bug fogger”. Is that an American thing? (Also: Tiny sandbag wall!)

“Oh my! It’s hideous! Ladies and gentlemen, I can hardly describe this terrifying creature before me, except to say: Run for your lives! Go on! Empty the cities! Leave everything behind!”

“I…I don’t know how long I can stay on the air. I’ll try to get to our aerial view in chopper five!”

Okay, it seems even Elmyra’s family and the broadcast folks are still under the impression that this is actually happening. And Brain instantly cuts again to the aerial view. Brain, I think you’ve been watching too many movies.

“Chopper five, high above the city. The horrible creatures from Mars…invading…destroying everything in their path! Oh, the humanity!”

Since this is a still image the impact is lessened but Brain is rapidly beating his fist against his side to simulate the sound of helicopter blades and it’s actually pretty effective. Well done, lil guy, I never would’ve thought to do something like that. Your foley work is great!

The milk carton buildings still have straws in them to make chimneys! There’s little Chinese takeout boxes as buildings, too! I’m so charmed by all these quaint ways they’ve made their props.

Also, the Pinky-alien has apparently grown to kaiju size now, somehow. Brain, you’ve got to make your hoax at least a little consistent!

“This is no hoax, ladies and gentlemen. I urge you to run for your lives while you can! We’re not making this up just so we can take over the world!”

Goddamnit, Brain. You are the worst liar in the history of forever.

“Oh no! It’s heading this way! Run for your lives! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!”

I just thought these cowering poses Brain did were funny and cute. He is so small and vulnerable…

So Pinky starts to menace the camera itself and—

—Oops. This isn’t going to go well.

I like how Pinky is at first concerned about Brain’s mood and then we he sees that Brain is just walking home to plan for tomorrow night he’s bouncing on his tip-toes after him.

Scarlet's Swords: Music Films Book Blog 10 (July 2021)

A rollercoaster of a month emotionally with ‘the book’. So many moments of insecurity and anxiety washed away by a series of related and tangential moments and experiences. I went on annual leave finally, to await the arrival of our new baby and to spend a few weeks as a family with little to no responsibility or expectation beyond that. It was freeing to put on my out of office at work and simultaneously put a quasi-OOO on the book for the foreseeable. It might have been foolish given how far behind where I wanted to be I am currently, but it was liberating.

It caused me to rethink my approach, or at least know I need to (I haven’t done it yet because I’m stepping back a tad). In the downtime away from writing I have been tinkering and moving forward at a snail’s pace. One thing I did was to map out all the films I still need to see or see again, or at least have told myself I need to see or see again. It’s up near the 300. Obviously I can’t watch that many and write and read and edit and submit my first draft in February 2022. So I stopped worrying that I had to. I have been prioritising viewing and making peace with the fact that I can’t see everything. It’s weird how pervasive that sense is when writing about cinema and how hard it is to escape. The feeling that I am writing about something I love and want to share with people is subsumed beneath the fear of being ‘tested’ on my knowledge and the facts of it all (even though I’m not presenting fact) and what ‘gaps’ might tell people about me. This is sometimes stronger than the feeling that I am just a terrible writer writing a book no one has any interest in ever reading. I wonder if that’s my age, or the social media age, the fact that it’s taken me so long to get to this point or some wretched combination of all three.

The writing of the list certainly helped put the next few months into focus and my sketch of a new plan, once I am back in earnest at the desk, looks ok. I’m excited to work through the final films and get the book into even better shape. Other events in July certainly helped. One was finishing a draft of the fifth chapter on my list, on films about making music. It was a slog time wise, because of so many interruptions, but I got there on the final day of ‘work’ before annual leave. So it felt momentous and a good way to sign off for a bit.

There was also the arrival of some films from the U.S. I took advantage of the Barnes and Noble 50% off Criterion Collection sale and the fact that I have a dear, dear friend in New York (thank you JC!) to post stuff to me that would mean avoiding import tax, to get my hands on some classic films. I mainly wanted them for the extras but also because I love them. I picked up A Hard Day’s Night, Gimme Shelter (a July rewatch), Transes and one I’ve never seen, Murray Lerner’s Festival. I also picked up maybe my favourite ever music doc, Les Blank’s A Poem Is A Naked Person, and a box set of Blank’s work which includes a ton of music, music-centric, or music related works that I can’t wait to get stuck into. Blank is fast becoming one of my favourite filmmakers.

July’s watchlist was heavy hitters galore as I was watching and rewatching for my Milestones chapter so films and filmmakers included The Last Waltz and other Scorsese works (is Rolling Thunder Revue his best music film maybe?), Jonathan Demme, Julien Temple and films about the Beatles, Stones and Bob Dylan. Big. One such film was Demme’s beautiful concert film Heart of Gold, focusing on Neil Young not long after surgery for a brain aneurysm. It’s a warm and soulful film and one I saw on DVD, in New York, on a lazy afternoon before heading home, while staying with my friend John Carlin (the JC who sent posted me some DVDs this month). I was tired, I was all New York-ed out, and John put it on and we loved it. It meant a lot, maybe more, than it would normally had because a couple of years earlier I had written a play called How It Plays Out, that John travelled to Luton to perform in as the lead, and in the play he performed a Neil Young song, Only Love Can Break Your Heart. John Carlin is a brilliant songwriter in his own right. Check out his work here and buy Songs From The Black House, it’s one of the best records ever made, Fact. I love him.

I also read the first book that will feature in my book since I started writing back last year (nearly 12 months ago!), Thomas F. Cohen’s Playing to the Camera: Musicians and Musical Performance in Documentary Cinema. It was invigorating. Not only is it a great book, but it reminded me why I am working on mine. I want to be in dialogue with these other works that exist, reach out to and pull from them and survey the land of ideas that is music documentary and the writing on it. I loved Cohen’s style and confidence too. It gave me strength to be more confident about my own writing. It was also nice to see so much time dedicated to Shirley Clarke’s Ornette: Made in America, a truly magnificent doc I loved writing about.

So over the next few months I shall be reading more and more for the book. I am excited. That trip to the BFI library (where I learned of Cohen’s book), really galvanised me, in ways I’m becoming more aware of as I think more and write less.

1. If you could travel one place in the world where would you travel?

ooo thats hard. I think its between Greece and London right now. I just went to London last summer but I loved it so much and I would love to spend more time there. I’ve always wanted to go to Greece because of all the architecture and history.

2. What do you do in your free time away from Sims?

I’ve been playing table tennis a lot lately and I love drawing/painting. Also during quarantine I've been making sooo many tiaras (I think over 10 so far).

3. What other games do you play besides The Sims?

I play CK2 (crusader kings 2), City Skylines, and Stardew Valley pretty frequently. I have a lot more games but I play those the most other than the sims.

4. How tall are you?

I’m 5′8-ish. I guess I’m kinda tall but im the shortest girl in the family still :(

5. One random interest of yours?

haha im going to steal @peebsplays answer, I love history. You probably have seen some history elements in my story, well thats because im obsessed with history and royal history. If I didn’t do a modern story I would for sure have done a Regency Royal Story. I research a lot about history in my free time especially about royals (I've been doing this for like three years for some reason idk).

6. Current Favorite Bands or Artists?

Right now I am super obsessed with Billie Eilish. I really became that basic bitch but she's so good I can’t even describe it. my favorite songs are bellyache and idontwanttobeyouanymore.

7. Something your looking forward to.

Obviously leaving quarantine, but im not really looking forward for something right now. I kinda like my life right now honestly lol.

8.Current Favorite Films.

My current favorite film is Little Women and it probably will be Emma when I get around to watching it. I also love the Duchess (the one with Keira Knightley) I can watch that film everyday.

9. Who is a Historical Icon who has left a impact on your life?

Gosh this is so hard. I guess I would say Queen Victoria (kinda basic answer lol). I love her and her story so much and her diaries are so interesting. I’d also like to say Queen Mary (formerly Princess Mary of Teck). I think that she was a great woman and definitely one my favorite British Queens. her tiara collection is also chef’s kiss.

10. Favorite Series (Book or Movie series) :)

My favorite tv series right now is Downton Abbey. I’m currently rewatching it and I love it so much. I also love the Crown its an amazing show. I’m also really excited for that new Catherine the Great Series which is being released on Hulu on May 15th.

This is a fantastic video. It feels somehow so different from Phil’s usual content, but is also still extremely Phil? Also, the editing with all the darkness and just voice/text is perfect. I love seeing him get out/explore/try new things. I feel like this is a preview of what we could have had more of from Phil in 2020 if not for *gestures broadly* and that makes me a little sad. 😕

A few days before this is also when they went to the Stranger Things event with Martyn and Cornelia. Phil shared a photo of himself then and the joint selfie later in the year.

1. who is your favorite character in 2? Xiomara has been my consistent fave but Jane and Petra have moments where they are my faves

2. who is your favorite in 1? Ummm Heather Davis. She is just interesting and also fun and I love all the times she gets the spotlight.

3. what’s your favorite episode of 4? 2x04 is the first one the comes to mind. We get quality moments for all my couples, Lizzie has a heartbreaking scene, the humor is peak, and to top it off, they played It's My Party.

4. what’s your favorite season of 5? I think it's 2 . . . But it might be 3. . . Like, late 2 and early 3 lol.

5. who’s your favorite couple in 3? Parker and Hardison!!! Truly such a well done relationship. They are best friends, they are partners, and just a little angsty. Just the amount of trust and respect and fun and love in their relationship is beautiful.

6. who’s your favorite couple in 2? I really wanted Jane and Petra to be endgame, they had so much chemistry and amazing development and it could have been the best enemies to friends to lovers. At least it was confirmed that Petra was bi. (But canon couples? Jane and Micheal, and yes, I'm still bitter).

7. least favorite episode of 1? Every time I think of an episode, I remember a part I really like lol. Either the romcom episode with Nathaniel as the main character or maybe the episode where Rebecca goes to camp with Josh. . . .

8. favorite episode of 5? Audrey Parker's Day Off!!!! I love time loop episodes, I love non permanent deaths, I loved the humor, I loved so much about it!!!

9. favorite season of 2? I think s1 still holds a special place in my heart. This show had my heart from the start. But I need to rewatch it.

10. how long have you watched 1? I watched it for the second time with my sister earlier this year. I think it was February.

11. how did you become interested in 3? My mom had an episode on and it looked good (it was The Fifteen Minutes Job) and then like 2 weeks later I was home sick and I started it cause it was on Netflix and I was hooked.

12. favorite actor in 4? Ooo they all have some really good moments. .. .either Danielle Rose Russell or Jenny Boyd.

13. which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? Crazy Ex Girlfriend. Jane the Virgin had a terrible last season that undermined most of s3 and s4 and Haven is mess, with inconsistencies in the timeline everywhere. Plus, I haven't been able to finish the last season. Cxgf has it's flaws but it stuck to its thesis statement, was incredibly consistent, and has one of the best character arcs I've seen. Also, the music is so much fun and I really agree with the themes and found the ending very satisfying.

14. which have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3? I've seen each show all the way through, so same percentage wise but I looked up their episode count and Leverage has like, 15 more episodes.

15. if you could be anyone from 4 who would you be? Uhhhh. . . What trauma do I want in my life. . . I think I have to go with Hope because I want to be a werewolf/vampire/witch tribrid.

16. would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? I suppose if you allow the possibility of magic existing in Leverage, the Leverage team could come to the school,,, maybe boot out Alaric,,,, cause he's really not a great headmaster,,,, but it's a bit of a stretch.

(My sister asked me on a separate occasion what a crazy ex girlfriend and haven crossover would look like and that would be a messed up tragedy, I'll tell you that)

17. pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely ok couple. Look, I'm just saying I still want Valencia and Heather to be endgame.

18. overall which show has a better storyline, 1 or 3? Soooo Leverage is not great at an overarching story, it's more episodic, but they have very good character arcs and stays on theme. But Crazy Ex has a more conventional storyline that is very well thought out and planned, with lots of consistency so that wins.

19. which has better theme music, 2 or 4? I looked up what might be their theme music and Jane the Virgin has a very sweet little intro
